Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Greece

At 6 p.m. we'll gather at our hotel for a "Welcome to Athens" group meeting. Then we'll get oriented to our neighborhood and walk to a nearby restaurant where we can get acquainted over dinner.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Athens.

Day 2: Athens' Acropolis

This morning we'll hike to the top of Athens' legendary Acropolis, where we'll take a walking tour of its 2,500-year-old Golden Age temples, dominated by the dramatic Parthenon. We'll then work our way down and tour the sleek new Acropolis Museum, custom built to showcase the amazing Parthenon sculptures. Your afternoon and evening are free for exploring Athens' marketplaces — the ancient Agora and the modern Plaka's labyrinth of inviting streets, squares, shops, and cafés.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Athens.

Day 3: Delphi

This morning we'll leave the city behind and drive into the rugged countryside. In a dramatic setting on the flanks of 8,000-foot Mt. Parnassus, we'll enjoy the fresh air and tour the mystical ruins of Delphi. Here, 25 centuries ago, the celebrated oracle allowed mere mortals to converse with the gods. This evening we'll enjoy dinner together.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Delphi.

Day 4: Peloponnese Mountains

Today we'll cross over the Gulf of Corinth to the Peloponnese, where we'll temporarily leave our bus for a steep, scenic cog railway ride up to the historic town of Kalavryta, past the waterfalls and caves lining the narrow Vouraikos Gorge. Just beyond, at a riverside café in the mountain village of Planitero, we'll enjoy a lunch of freshly caught trout and other Greek specialties before our bus takes us to our destination high up in the Menalon Mountains. Tonight, we'll enjoy a performance of traditional music and dancing before dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Train: 1 hour. Sleep in or near Lagkadia.

Day 5: Ancient Olympia

This morning's winding mountain drive will take us to Olympia, site of the world's first Olympics over 2,700 years ago. There we'll take a vivid walking tour of Olympia's ancient athletic venues, temples, and museum, followed by lunch together. This afternoon's drive will take us along sweeping views of the Ionian Sea to a relaxed seaside village on the Mani Peninsula.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep on the Mani Peninsula.

Day 6: Seaside Discoveries

The Mani is an ideal place to enjoy a "vacation from your vacation." After some orientation by your guide, the day is all yours. You might hike along the ancient cobbled paths that wind their way through the nearby hills, or just relax on the beach and end your day with a grilled seafood dinner and a view from the little taverna you've discovered.

Walking light to strenuous: your choice. No bus. Sleep on the Mani Peninsula.

Day 7: Mani Villages

We'll follow the coast to the isolated Mani Peninsula, home to generations-long clan wars, salt-of-the-earth villages, and unique pyrgospita — tower houses. If Greece had a Tombstone and an O.K. Corral, they'd be here. We'll enjoy lunch together, and after making a few off-the-beaten-path discoveries, we'll ride on to the dramatically set medieval town of Monemvasia, where you'll be free for dinner.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in mainland Monemvasia.

Day 8: Medieval Monemvasia

This morning we'll cross the causeway to tackle the massive rock that shoots straight up out of the blue-green Aegean Sea. After an orientation walk around Monemvasia's cozy little Lower Town, you'll have free time to wander more of the romantic walled town or take a swim in the Aegean. Those who want a workout can hike to the very top of the rock. You'll be rewarded with sweeping Aegean views and a chance to explore the ruins of the Upper Town — a living museum of Byzantine, Ottoman, and Venetian history. This evening we'll enjoy a cooking demonstration, followed by dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in mainland Monemvasia.

Day 9: Byzantine Mystras

Today we'll head up into the heart of the Peloponnese, where we'll tour the haunting ruins of the fortress town of Mystras and its still-standing group of Byzantine churches. After stopping in nearby Sparta for lunch, we'll continue north to our destination: the delightful, fortress-topped harbor town of Nafplio, where we'll enjoy a Greek wine and ouzo tasting.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Nafplio.

Day 10: Mycenae and Nafplio

After breakfast we'll take a short drive to mysterious Mycenae, the fortified city founded by Perseus a thousand years before the Parthenon was built. We'll take a walking tour through the grand Lion Gate, along the "cyclopean" walls, and into a remarkably domed tholos tomb. Then we'll return to Nafplio for a free afternoon to explore the colorful alleyways of the Old Town, ride a boat to the little castle island in the harbor, or hike up to enjoy a Venetian fortress view. We'll regroup for dinner together this evening.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 1 hour. Sleep in Nafplio.

Day 11: Ancient Epidavros

This morning we'll drive to nearby Epidavros. Once the most famous healing center in the Mediterranean, Epidavros' star attraction today is its ancient theater, large enough to accommodate 14,000. We'll learn about the roots of medicine and drama here, before hopping a boat to the idyllic traffic-free island of Hydra.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Boat: ½ hour. Sleep on Hydra.

Day 12: Island of Hydra

Your entire day is free to soak up the whitewashed architecture as you wander Hydra's narrow streets and harbor promenade. You might swim at a nearby beach, hike across the island, or try to make friends with a donkey. We'll cap our island vacation with a relaxing sunset happy hour.

Walking light to strenuous: your choice. No bus. Sleep on Hydra.

Day 13: Athens' National Archaeological Museum

This morning we'll take a ferry ride to Piraeus, where our bus will be waiting to take us to Athens' impressive National Archaeological Museum, home to amazingly preserved masterpieces in marble, bronze, and gold. Your afternoon is free to wander and shop through the Plaka, or explore other parts of this bustling city. Tonight we'll gaze at the floodlit Acropolis and enjoy a final dinner together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Opa!

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 1 hour. Boat: 2 hours. Sleep in Athens.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. You can easily catch a cab to the airport or to nearby Piraeus, where a fleet of ferries awaits to transport those with time to even more Greek destinations. Antio!

With the exception of our tour being cut short due to Covid-19, everything was amazing! Filippos & Iris were so kind, knowledgeable, accommodating, and really took care of all of us through the unusual situation. The local guides were great, the hotels were awesome, and the food delicious. I look forward to finishing the Greece tour and booking other tours through Rick Steves Europe!

"I am a sunset lover. My top wow moments were the incredible sunsets I was able to witness in both Kardamyli & Athens. In addition, the beautiful views from our hotels, the bus rides & walks along the cities were awesome."

This was our first Rick Steves tour and my husband and I could not have been more thrilled with the entire experience. Our only regret was the tour having to end early due to Covid-19. Our Guides, Filippos and Iris, were amazing and we were extremely well taken care of in such uncertain times. They went above and beyond to make the time we had together fun, educational, personal and memorable. The Food was abundant and delicious, the Hotels very comfortable and the Local Guides informative.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I have several! Of course, experiencing the ancient sites in person, is incredible. Seeing snow-capped mountains throughout Greece was my special thrill; as I had no idea of the beauty and diversity of the country's landscape. And yes! Seeing the sun melt into the sea in Kardamyli, on our private balcony; while sipping a glass of wine from the complementary bottle that the lovely family who owned the hotel left for us!"

This was our third Rick Steves tour, and we were not disappointed. We had excellent tour guides (Filippos and Iris), and excellent local guides. What we like about Rick Steves Tours is you are taken to the usual tourist sites, but also to less traveled areas where many tourists don't go. You experience local hotels and local restaurants and an opportunity to experience local culture. Greece is beautiful and much more varied than we thought it would be.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I had two: 1) traveling the scenic cog railway to Kalavryta and lunching in the mountain village of Planitero, and 2) watching the beautiful sunset over the sea from the lovely balcony at our hotel in Kardamyli."

Overall the trip was outstanding because of our guide, Apostolos and select guides, who provided a historical context for each day of the trip. I was especially moved by the more recent history of Greece in the 20th century, including meeting with residents near the Hotel Leto in Delphi.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The heft of the Lions Gate and the meeting of olderlocal residents in Leto, one of whom told us that at 17 he won a race barefoot, and the prize was a pair of shoes. The whole idea that history recorded in the buildings and rocks of Greece go back to the 6th Century BC."

This tour was absolutely amazing. Our tour guide, Apostolos, made ever effort to give us a true Greek experience, he was wonderful. Every town we stayed in, every archaeological site we visited, every local guide we had, were truly top notch. By the end of the tour I felt we had truly been immersed in Greek history and Greek culture. I didn't want to leave.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"This tour is filled with so many "wow" moments, it's impossible to pick just one. From standing on the Acropolis looking down on Athens, to walking through the ruins of Delphi, and standing at the start line in the ancient Olympic stadium, or sitting in the ancient theatre of Epidavros one is truly overwhelmed. To try and pick just one would not do justice to the sights and events this tour provides."

"This was our first Rick Steves tour and our first WOW moment was at the rooftop restaurant of our tour hotel. "Apostolos took us on a walk in one of the small towns we visited. Talked to an older gentlemen that I assume he has met through his experiences. Can not say enough about the wonderful tour guide. Apostolos was incredible. Very knowledgeable with a good sense of history. The guides at the various sites were great. The roads are so twisty and he managed the turns very well.

The independent guides were outstanding as well! The choice of accommodations was perfect and the food.....delicious!

"When asked at the end of the tour for a wow moment my response was that every day brought yet another unbelievable memory. Our tour guide Apostolos brought Greek culture to life through his stories about living in Greece and connections with local people. Archeological site tour guides were top notch. Hotels offered beautiful gardens/views, were family run, and offered convenient walks to towns. I loved all the archeological sites and museums. It's not every day you can walk into a Mycenaean Beehive Tomb! The food was wonderful-fresh grilled fish, best 2.5E souvlaki, & fava bean/pomegranate salad. Well-paced tour!

I was a little worried about the hills and amount of walking, but was pleasantly surprised to find it was more "doable" than I had anticipated. The guides paced the hills and steps with perfectly timed stops, during which we were often able to sit or stand in the shade while they described the venue. Although I am not a "beach person," the days we spend along the coast were some of my favorites! Such lovely scenery and fun little towns! They were just what we needed towards the end!

Greece has long been on my bucket list, and I wasn't disappointed! As a student of history, it was thrilling to actually be standing on sites I'd only seen in photos. This tour was action-packed and I learned something new every day! Along with lots of walking and hiking, there was ample free time to rest and explore on our own. I expected the heavy emphasis on historical sites, but we also spent some restful, slow days in charming coastal beach towns. A very enjoyable, well-paced tour.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The whole tour was kind of a "wow" for me. Acropolis Day was a favorite (I couldn't believe I was there!), but Delphi, Olympia and Mycenae were amazing too. A big surprise was Monemvasia, where we spent an enjoyable day wandering through the town, gaping at the spectacular views, stopping for snacks, coffees and finally lunch at the many "tavernas with a view". I also loved relaxing on little Hydra, a great place to end our tour, with a gorgeous Greek sunset."

The Greece tour was fabulous. I knew I was going to see LOTS of ruins, but the countryside was more spectacular than I imagined and the food was delicious. Of course it brought back all those classes filled with Greek mythology, but seeing the temples, theaters and other structures gave life to the people who lived that mythology. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone.

"I thought the Acropolis would be a "wow" moment, but the hoards of people lessened the effect. Olympia (even thought it was raining cats and dogs-well, mostly cats being Greece) had a profound impact on me. This was an amazing adventure. I loved it. The rugged beauty of the arid landscape, thousands of olive trees in rows and random bunches, stone terraces that lined steep hills, infinite laces built over deep time. These are strong, visual, take-away memories. But the wow factor comes from feeling connected to ancient people every bit as smart as we. And seeing something unique that I can only experience by being there.

I have wanted to go the Greece for 40 years and this trip did not disappoint. We saw fabulous ancient sites, ate authentic food and saw parts of Greece that many do not see. I loved it!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"For me, it is always about connecting with the local people which is difficult to do on a tour. Even though we had some fabulous local guides, Penny and Mama Fay, to name two, that is not usually a personal connection. At the restaurant in Nafplio, we were taken to a small cafe where three local musicians played. The owner talked about life and some local taxi drivers danced for us. That was my wow moment!"

As we expected, the Greece in 14 Days tour was heavy on historical sites. Our tour guide Anastasia was highly knowledgeable about the sites we visited, and about classical Greek civilization in general. We also learned about contemporary Greece, the recession it's in, struggles with the EU and with Turkey. All in all, I felt it was a well rounded experience and was satisfied.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite positive wow moment was spontaneous dancing by some taxi drivers in response to the live music at our lunch event in Sparta. My negative wow moment was being pick pocketed in Athens, out of my Rick Steves shoulder bag. I lost a wallet with credit cards only. The thief reached up under the buckle, unzipped a small pocket, and lifted my wallet apparently from behind as it rode on my shoulder, and I never felt a thing. I think they watched me pay with a credit card at lunch...."

This was my second trip to Greece this year. The first was a cruise of the Cyclades. This trip was a nice compliment to that one. I now feel that I could travel Greece "through the back door" with reasonable success. It was fun to return to Monemvasia, Nafpilion and Hydra after visiting them in the summer. Having studied the ancient classics, I felt a deep sense of satisfaction in walking on the stones trod by Themistocles, Socrates, Pericles et als.

Covered a lot of history and archeological sites in a short time. Anastasia has wealth of knowledge and it was a pleasure to learn about Greece and better appreciate current history. She knows her stuff and clearly is always adding to her knowledge. Local guides with exception of Penny were below my expectations. They often pointed things out without a theme, seemed to work off script rather than infuse enthusiasm, had difficulty answering questions, and sometimes had the facts wrong

Favorite "WOW" moment

The tour was excellent. It was jam packed with awesome activities. The tour brought us to places that I read about in History books and the guides brought them to life. We went to so many places that we would have never found ourselves: the great restaurant in Limini, the trout farm, Kardamyli pebble beaches, traditional Greek dancing in Lakadia and dinner with a great Greek band entertaining us in Modern Nafplio. As usual, on these tours, we had a great group of people and that made it better!

This trip was an exceptional way to achieve a long time "bucket list" to visit some of the most important sites of the ancient world as well as to see and experience a wide range of Greece in the modern world. Good group, great guide and driver, everything as planned. One area that disappointed me a bit was the length of time allowed for touring museums on our own after completion of the official museum tour. It was just not enough time. I went into the tour, my first Rick Steves experience, with high expectations having been encouraged by friends who had been on other tours. I wanted to experience Greece but was not really familiar with the Peloponnese. To say that the tour exceeded my expectations would be an understatement. It exceeded way beyond my highest expectations. Our trips to small villages and out of the way places and our ability to get away from the crowds (except of course, in Athens) made the trip a dream.

"An impossible question. There was a "wow" a day. I would love to return to Hydra. After our tour we flew to Santorini which is beautiful beyond words. From beginning to end, a wonderful tour. Ioanna was a magnificent tour guide. Her knowledge and love of her country were on display at every turn. Great food, beautiful views of mountains, sunsets, and swimming in warm sapphire blue waters. Truly a trip of a lifetime. Oh, did I forget to mention ancient ruins dating back thousands of years? Incredible! And kudos to our bus driver, Stafos. I am in awe of how he was able to maneuver a giant bus through the tiny village roads.

"It is hard to choose just one wow moment because there are so many on this tour. Of course the Parthenon/Acropolis is the first wow moment that is a experienced, but for me my personal wow moment was the hike to the acropolis of the rock Monemvasia and the Medieval town on its slopes. The contrast of the ancient white stone buildings, red rooftops, and the indescribably beautiful shades of the blue Aegean Sea are truly awe inspiring, and reminds us of what a wonderful world we live in."

It could have been better - for two reasons - and they were my fault. I just finished 2 week Adriatic tour just 2 days prior to Greece. Both tours contained MOUNTAINS OF HISTORY. Both were very active. I am in good physical condition but it was a mistake to book two extreme history tours back to back. My head got cluttered. I needed more time in-between. Also I made a very poor choice of a roommate which was a disaster and an emotional drain as well as the physical and mental.

This was overall an excellent tour for those who enjoy visiting ruins and museums and learning the history behind the sites. I enjoyed it immensely. It included a lot of walking so you must be pretty fit since much of it was rocky and steep. Athens was the one real city on the tour, and it was crowded and vibrant as a big city should be.The others were much smaller, but all had something to offer and were worth the visit.Thoroughly enjoyed the beach days, particularly Hydra. Great little island!

"Well, I enjoyed all the sights but which one was a wow? I guess the first night-time view of the Acropolis when I arrived at 10 pm two days before the tour. Yes, I'm here--it's there! Other than that, I want to commend Fillipos for creating moments with his selection of out-of-the way restaurants in non-touristed areas, particularly the one with the three local musicians, and also the mezzos dinner in Athens. When I thought of Greece, I thought of islands. What an absolute joy it was to experience the Peloponnese and learn that Greece is 85% mountains. I was enthralled as we drive through Arcadia and Filippos told stories of Pan. What a pleasure to participate in traditional Greek dancing, chat with local Athenians, swim in the Ionian and Aegean Seas, and eat some of the best food in my life. I was awed by the ancient ruins and thrilled by the terrain and kindness of the Greek people. What a trip!

Watching my husband dance with a family that does traditional Greek dancing and then get a shot of Tsipouro poured down his throat. Senset swim in Kardamyli. This was my second Rick Steve's tour, and it was absolutely wonderful. Our guide, Fillippos was amazing. He had incredible people skills, was knowledgeable, and told us about the lives of the Greek people since the recession of 2008. He gets ten stars!

First of all, Filippos was outstanding. He has wonderful knowledge of history, geography, politics, archaeology, arts, music, language and is a great communicator.
