Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Greece

At 6 p.m. we'll meet at our hotel for a "Welcome to Athens" meeting. Then we'll get oriented to our neighborhood and walk to a nearby restaurant where we can get acquainted over dinner. Sleep in Athens (2 nights). No bus. Walking: light.

Day 2: Athens' Acropolis

This morning we'll hike to the top of Athens' legendary Acropolis, where we'll take a walking tour of its 2,500-year-old Golden Age temples, dominated by the dramatic Parthenon. We'll then work our way down and tour the sleek new Acropolis Museum, custom built to showcase the amazing Parthenon sculptures. Your afternoon and evening are free for exploring Athens' marketplaces — the ancient Agora and the modern Plaka's labyrinth of inviting streets, squares, shops, and cafés. No bus. Walking: strenuous.

Day 3: Delphi

This morning we'll leave the city behind and drive into the rugged countryside. In a dramatic setting on the flanks of 8,000-foot Mt. Parnassus we'll enjoy the fresh air and tour the mystical ruins of Delphi. Here, 25 centuries ago, the celebrated oracle allowed mere mortals to converse with the gods. This evening we'll have dinner together and sleep in the town of Delphi (1 night). Bus: 4 hours. Walking: strenuous.

Day 4: Peloponnese Mountains

Today we'll cross over the Gulf of Corinth to the Peloponnese, where we'll temporarily leave our bus for a steep, scenic cog railway ride up to the historic town of Kalavryta, past the waterfalls and caves lining the narrow Vouraikos Gorge. Just beyond at a riverside café in the mountain village of Planitero, we'll enjoy a lunch of freshly caught trout and other Greek specialties before our bus takes us to our destination high up in the Menalon Mountains. Tonight we'll enjoy dinner together. Sleep in or near Lagkadia (1 night). Train: 1 hour. Bus: 5 hours. Walking: light.

Day 5: Ancient Olympia

This morning's winding mountain drive will take us to Olympia, site of the world's first Olympics, over 2,700 years ago. There we'll take a vivid walking tour of Olympia's ancient athletic venues, temples, and museum, followed by lunch together. This afternoon's drive will take us along sweeping views of the Ionian Sea to a relaxed seaside village on the Mani Peninsula, where we'll sleep (2 nights). Bus: 5 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 6: Seaside Vacation

The Mani is an ideal place to enjoy a "vacation from your vacation." After some orientation by your guide, the day is all yours. You might hike along the ancient cobbled paths that wind their way through the nearby hills — or just relax on the beach — and end your day with a grilled seafood dinner and a view from the little taverna you've discovered. No bus. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 7: Mani Villages

We'll follow the coast to the isolated Mani Peninsula, home to generations-long clan wars, salt-of-the-earth villages, and unique pyrgospita — tower houses. If Greece had a Tombstone and an O.K. Corral, here is where they'd be. We'll enjoy lunch together, and after making a few off-the-beaten-path discoveries, we'll ride on to the dramatically set medieval town of Monemvasia, where you'll be free for dinner. Sleep in mainland Monemvasia (2 nights). Bus: 5 hours. Walking: light.

Day 8: Medieval Monemvasia

This morning we'll cross the causeway to tackle the massive rock that shoots straight up out of the blue-green Aegean Sea. After an orientation walk around Monemvasia's cozy little Lower Town, you'll have free time to wander more of the romantic walled town or take a swim in the Aegean. Those who want a workout can hike to the very top of the rock. You will be rewarded with sweeping Aegean views and a chance to explore the ruins of the Upper Town — a living museum of Byzantine, Ottoman, and Venetian history. This evening we'll enjoy a cooking demonstration, followed by dinner together. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 9: Byzantine Mystras

Today we'll head up into the heart of the Peloponnese, where we'll tour the haunting ruins of the fortress town of Mystras and its still-standing group of Byzantine churches. After stopping in nearby Sparta for lunch, we'll continue north to our destination: the delightful, fortress-topped harbor town of Nafplio. We'll enjoy a Greek wine and ouzo tasting, and sleep in Nafplio (2 nights). Bus: 5 hours. Walking: strenuous.

Day 10: Mycenae and Nafplio

After breakfast we'll take a short drive to mysterious Mycenae, the fortified city founded by Perseus a thousand years before the Parthenon was built. We'll take a walking tour through the grand Lion Gate, along the "cyclopean" walls, and into a remarkably domed tholos tomb. Then we'll return to Nafplio for a free afternoon to explore the colorful alleyways of the Old Town, ride a boat to the little castle island in the harbor, or hike up to enjoy a Venetian fortress view. We'll regroup for dinner and music together this evening. Bus: 1 hour. Walking: moderate.

Day 11: Ancient Epidavros

This morning we'll drive to nearby Epidavros. Once the most famous healing center in the Mediterranean, today's star attraction is its ancient theater, large enough to accommodate 14,000. We'll learn about the roots of medicine and drama here, before hopping a boat to the idyllic traffic-free island of Hydra, where we'll sleep (2 nights). Boat: ½ hour. Bus: 2 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 12: Island of Hydra

Your entire day is free to soak up the whitewashed architecture as you wander Hydra's narrow streets and harbor promenade. You might swim at a nearby beach, hike across the island, or try to make friends with a donkey. We will cap our island vacation with a relaxing sunset happy hour. No bus. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 13: Return to Athens and National Archaeological Museum

This morning we'll take a ferry ride to Piraeus, where our bus will be waiting to take us to Athens' impressive National Archaeological Museum, home to amazingly preserved masterpieces in marble, bronze, and gold. Your afternoon is free to wander and shop through the Plaka, or explore other parts of this bustling city. Tonight we'll gaze at the floodlit Acropolis and enjoy a final dinner together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Opa! Sleep in Athens (1 night). Boat: 2 hours. Bus: 1 hour. Walking: light.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. You can easily catch a cab for the airport, or to nearby Piraeus where a fleet of ferries awaits to transport those with time to even more Greek destinations. Antio!

I had high expectations of this tour and they were exceeded. Loved it!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"This was our first Rick Steves tour and our first WOW moment was at the rooftop restaurant of our tour hotel. A fantastic view of the Acropolis and we so enjoyed drinking our wine and watching as it became dark and the Acropolis was all lit up. Another WOW was seeing the rock of Monemvasia from our balcony at our hotel, we had a great view of it."

"My wow moment was visiting Olympia where our guide explained the reasons behind creation of the ancient Olympic games in 776 BC as a means to train warriors for battle and to unify the city states against the common enemies."

Great experience! The bus was great as was the driver George who handeled the bus beautifully as well as loading and unloading our luggage. The hotels and food were excellent as well as the entertainment provided by the tour. The destinations were very interesting and historical and made more so by the guides who were extremely knowledgeable about the sites and the people who occupied them.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Meeting and interacting with the local people who were very friendly and giving. Learning about the Greek culture and how they take care of each other and especially family. This Country (USA) would be a much better place if some of the Greek traditions were adopted."

Our tour guide Apostolos brought Greek culture to life through his stories about living in Greece and connections with local people. Archeological site tour guides were top notch. Hotels offered beautiful gardens/views, were family run, and offered convenient walks to towns. I loved all the archeological sites and museums. It's not every day you can walk into a Mycenaean Beehive Tomb! The food was wonderful-fresh grilled fish, best 2.5E souvlaki, & fava bean/pomegranate salad. Well-paced tour!

"The Athens Acropolis was my WOW moment. Then, we went to Delphi and learned about the oracle, Ancient Olympia and walked the grounds of the first Olympians, Medieval Monemvasia and climbed the rock, Byzantine Mystras and saw the ruins, Mycenae and walked through Lions Gate, Nafplio and explored its beauty, Epidavros and clapped in its ancient theater, the Island of Hydra and totally relaxed, and ended with the National Archaeological Museum now on my best museums list. Entire trip was a big WOW!"

Can not say enough about the wonderful tour guide. Apostolos was incredible. Very knowledgeable with a good sense of history. The guides at the various sites were great. The knew their material and were patient with the questions asked. Liked the cooking demonstration and will be using some of the recipes at Thanksgiving. The bus driver (George) was a wonder. The roads are so twisty and he managed the turns very well.

If possible, I would give our tour a double outstanding! Everything about our tour surpassed all of my expectations. Our guide, Apostolos, made it a most memorable trip with his superb organization, knowledge of the history, personality and most notable, his passion for his homeland and the Greek culture. The independent guides were outstanding as well! The choice of accommodations was perfect and the food.....delicious!

"When asked at the end of the tour for a wow moment my response was that every day brought yet another unbelievable memory. Choosing one is very difficult but the one that is first in my sharing with. friends and family would be Monomvasia and the hike w/spectacular views from the top of the "Rock"."

Apostolos was great and attended to everyone's needs. Also showed us some "backdoor" things we would have never experienced on our own. I like that he was "local".

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Apostolos took us on a walk in one of the small towns we visited. Talked to an older gentlemen that I assume he has met through his experiences. The man grabbed my husband's hand and said that he reminded him of his son... I don't know the back story of his relationship with his son, but it touched us deeply."

This tour was absolutely amazing. Our tour guide, Apostolos, made ever effort to give us a true Greek experience, he was wonderful. Every town we stayed in, every archaeological site we visited, every local guide we had, were truly top notch. By the end of the tour I felt we had truly been immersed in Greek history and Greek culture. I didn't want to leave.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"This tour is filled with so many "wow" moments, it's impossible to pick just one. From standing on the Acropolis looking down on Athens, to walking through the ruins of Delphi, and standing at the start line in the ancient Olympic stadium, or sitting in the ancient theatre of Epidavros one is truly overwhelmed. To try and pick just one would not do justice to the sights and events this tour provides."

Overall the trip was outstanding because of our guide, Apostolos and select guides, who provided a historical context for each day of the trip. I was especially moved by the more recent history of Greece in the 20th century, including meeting with residents near the Hotel Leto in Delphi.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The heft of the Lions Gate and the meeting of olderlocal residents in Leto, one of whom told us that at 17 he won a race barefoot, and the prize was a pair of shoes. The whole idea that history recorded in the buildings and rocks of Greece go back to the 6th Century BC."

A trip rich in experiences all over southern Greece. Guide, Maria, is terrific. She and the other guides at archeological sites really made Greek culture and history come alive. I could never have planned and seen so many sites and beautiful villages on my own. I felt this trip was such a great value for what we got to see and experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There wasn't a "single" wow moment. So many beautiful moments. I did love the cloudy, rainy visit to Delphi. It was so atmospheric with the low clouds especially at Athena site. I was blown away by the small mountain villages all over the penninsula. Amazing how they are built into the hillsides."

I was a little worried about the hills and amount of walking, but was pleasantly surprised to find it was more "doable" than I had anticipated. The guides paced the hills and steps with perfectly timed stops, during which we were often able to sit or stand in the shade while they described the venue. Although I am not a "beach person," the days we spend along the coast were some of my favorites! Such lovely scenery and fun little towns! They were just what we needed towards the end!

Greece has long been on my bucket list, and I wasn't disappointed! As a student of history, it was thrilling to actually be standing on sites I'd only seen in photos. This tour was action-packed and I learned something new every day! Along with lots of walking and hiking, there was ample free time to rest and explore on our own. I expected the heavy emphasis on historical sites, but we also spent some restful, slow days in charming coastal beach towns. A very enjoyable, well-paced tour.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The whole tour was kind of a "wow" for me. Acropolis Day was a favorite (I couldn't believe I was there!), but Delphi, Olympia and Mycenae were amazing too. A big surprise was Monemvasia, where we spent an enjoyable day wandering through the town, gaping at the spectacular views, stopping for snacks, coffees and finally lunch at the many "tavernas with a view". I also loved relaxing on little Hydra, a great place to end our tour, with a gorgeous Greek sunset."

"It may sound funny but our day in Delphi was a WOW Day. I wanted to see Delphi but it was raining (only rainy day we had). It was a challenge but I loved it. We saw amazing places. I was disappointed that we could not see Oracle of Delphi since Maria promised that!!! But it was still great day. I also enjoyed Sparta! This was an amazing adventure. I loved it. The rugged beauty of the arid landscape, thousands of olive trees in rows and random bunches, stone terraces that lined steep hills, infinite laces built over deep time. These are strong, visual, take-away memories. But the wow factor comes from feeling connected to ancient people every bit as smart as we. And seeing something unique that I can only experience by being there.

We had an outstanding time visiting various historic sites in Greece. Making the tour outstanding was our guide, David and the various local guides employed. This was the best of the three Rick Steve's Tours we've been on.

The Greece tour was fabulous. I knew I was going to see LOTS of ruins, but the countryside was more spectacular than I imagined and the food was delicious. Of course it brought back all those classes filled with Greek mythology, but seeing the temples, theaters and other structures gave life to the people who lived that mythology. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I thought the Acropolis would be a "wow" moment, but the hoards of people lessened the effect. Olympia (even thought it was raining cats and dogs-well, mostly cats being Greece) had a profound impact on me. As soon as we met David it was clear that we made the right decision in choosing this tour. He was the perfect guide for Greece, both entertaining and interesting, with just the right mix of history, culture and humor. The trip was well organized and everything ran smoothly. There were more hours on the bus than we had anticipated, but then we saw a lot of Greece. The diversity was amazing, from small mountain towns to sleepy seaside villages and a medieval fortress.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"For me, it is always about connecting with the local people which is difficult to do on a tour. Even though we had some fabulous local guides, Penny and Mama Fay, to name two, that is not usually a personal connection. As we expected, the Greece in 14 Days tour was heavy on historical sites. Our tour guide Anastasia was highly knowledgeable about the sites we visited, and about classical Greek civilization in general. We also learned about contemporary Greece, the recession it's in, struggles with the EU and with Turkey. All in all, I felt it was a well rounded experience and was satisfied.

"My favorite positive wow moment was spontaneous dancing by some taxi drivers in response to the live music at our lunch event in Sparta. My negative wow moment was being pick pocketed in Athens, out of my Rick Steves shoulder bag. I lost a wallet with credit cards only. The thief reached up under the buckle, unzipped a small pocket, and lifted my wallet apparently from behind as it rode on my shoulder, and I never felt a thing. I think they watched me pay with a credit card at lunch...."

This was my second trip to Greece this year. The first was a cruise of the Cyclades. This trip was a nice compliment to that one. I now feel that I could travel Greece "through the back door" with reasonable success. It was fun to return to Monemvasia, Nafpilion and Hydra after visiting them in the summer. Having studied the ancient classics, I felt a deep sense of satisfaction in walking on the stones trod by Themistocles, Socrates, Pericles et als.

Covered a lot of history and archeological sites in a short time. Anastasia has wealth of knowledge and it was a pleasure to learn about Greece and better appreciate current history. She knows her stuff and clearly is always adding to her knowledge. Local guides with exception of Penny were below my expectations. They often pointed things out without a theme, seemed to work off script rather than infuse enthusiasm, had difficulty answering questions, and sometimes had the facts wrong

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Watching the bus driver squeeze through rock walls and navigate narrow roads. Having the guide Penny reflect on site as well as philosophy-felt she thinks in a thoughtful way every day. The eerie and exciting feeling of walking on the exact stones of great philosophers and scientists."

This trip was an exceptional way to achieve a long time "bucket list" to visit some of the most important sites of the ancient world as well as to see and experience a wide range of Greece in the modern world. With the usual Rick Steves attention to the details of an intensive two weeks, every day was impactful and a learning experience. Ioanna added immeasurably to the content and enjoyment of each day and never lost her enthusiasm, smile and good cheer.

"That's not a fair question on a tour that hits the Parthenon, Delphi and Mycenae, all epic wows. I really enjoyed the tour and learning about both ancient and modern Greece. We stopped at a great mix of places so that we got to sample many aspects of Greece. I expected the tour to be great fun and a real learning experience. It was even better than I hoped! I enjoyed meeting all the people on the tour and all the different activities especially the night of good food and music in Napflion.

"It's very hard to pick my favorite "wow" moment. One of my favorites, though, happened shortly after we arrived in Athens when I first looked up to see the Parthenon on the Acropolis, and I thought, "Wow, we're really here!" Other highlights were taking in the view at Delphi and seeing the sites at Epidavros and the capital left as a tribute by a master craftsman. The visit to Kalavitra with the school museum was very moving as was the visit to Kastania."

The tour was excellent. It was jam packed with awesome activities. The tour brought us to places that I read about in History books and the guides brought them to life. We went to so many places that we would have never found ourselves: the great restaurant in Limini, the trout farm, Kardamyli pebble beaches, traditional Greek dancing in Lakadia and dinner with a great Greek band entertaining us in Modern Nafplio. As usual, on these tours, we had a great group of people and that made it better!

Great tour for me. Very relaxing, with enough activity to burn off those extra calories. I really liked the meals, all along the way.I learned about Greek wines, which are hard to find and understand in the US. The driving distances were about at my limit, but I understand it was necessary to cover the ground we planned on. Everything was well organized, and we had enough free time to explore places on our own. The leader guide Ioanna deserves a whole lot of credit for her great services.

That is a perfect description of this tour, which was so full of both. I was captivated by the culture, art, cuisine, history, mythology, people that we experienced every single day. Greece was phenomenal! As a student of history, actually standing and seeing all the antiquity was mind-blowing. Our guide, Filippos, was an outstanding organizer, leader, and story-teller. The people in our group all got along well and enhanced the tour. This is an active tour with lots of steps and hills but our guides were aware and accommodated us. I found Greece on this trip trip to be entirely different from the earlier trips I have had to Athens. The beauty of Greece is to be found outside of Athens. Went on an earlier excursion to the "IN" islands of Santorini and Samos and Patmos. Now I see why RS doesnt go there. Lousy with tourists. However, wish we could have gone to another small untouristed island. Hydra was Great!

It could have been better - for two reasons - and they were my fault. I just finished 2 week Adriatic tour just 2 days prior to Greece. Both tours contained MOUNTAINS OF HISTORY. Both were very active. I am in good physical condition but it was a mistake to book two extreme history tours back to back. My head got cluttered. I needed more time in-between. Also I made a very poor choice of a roommate which was a disaster and an emotional drain as well as the physical and mental.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The National Museum in Athens. The museum construction itself is amazing - built over top of ruins. I was there 20 years ago and there was no organized path up to the Parthenon, no museum. We just scrambled over rough rocks to get there. The other museums also were awesome. Also I loved being in the exact location of the original Olympics."

This tour far exceeded my expectations and was mostly due to a perfect combination of a great tour guide and an amazing group of tour members who made exploring Greece so much fun. I found the tour to be well paced with a nice balance of group time along with personal time to explore on ones own.

I am still in awe of how outstanding this tour was. I can't stop telling others about the way it was organized. To start with the Parthenon and then visit so many ancient sites, and finally end back in Athens at the National Archeological Museum was brilliant. As a retired teacher, I would say this "Unit Plan" on Greece was brilliant!! In addition, our Guide, Ioanna, was perfect. She has the perfect delivery and personality to spend two weeks with a group of diverse travelers.

"This is extremely difficult because every day had its own wow moment. I will narrow it down though by saying Ancient Olympia was fascinating. I have never ever had such wonderful produce, especially the salads, in my life!! This is our sixth tour so we expected the best and we were rewarded. We had an excellent guide in Ioanna and wonderful travelling companions. The setting was just magnificent."

From beginning to end, a wonderful tour. Ioanna was a magnificent tour guide. Her knowledge and love of her country were on display at every turn. Great food, beautiful views of mountains, sunsets, and swimming in warm sapphire blue waters. Truly a trip of a lifetime. Oh, did I forget to mention ancient ruins dating back thousands of years? Incredible! And kudos to our bus driver, Stafos. I am in awe of how he was able to maneuver a giant bus through the tiny village roads.

"It is hard to choose just one wow moment because there are so many on this tour. Of course the Parthenon/Acropolis is the first wow moment that is a experienced, but for me my personal wow moment was the hike to the acropolis of the rock Monemvasia and the Medieval town on its slopes. The contrast of the ancient white stone buildings, red rooftops, and the indescribably beautiful shades of the blue Aegean Sea are truly awe inspiring, and reminds us of what a wonderful world we live in."

When I thought of Greece, I thought of islands. What an absolute joy it was to experience the Peloponnese and learn that Greece is 85% mountains. I was enthralled as we drive through Arcadia and Filippos told stories of Pan. What a pleasure to participate in traditional Greek dancing, chat with local Athenians, swim in the Ionian and Aegean Seas, and eat some of the best food in my life. I was awed by the ancient ruins and thrilled by the terrain and kindness of the Greek people. What a trip!

Watching my husband dance with a family that does traditional Greek dancing and then get a shot of Tsipouro poured down his throat. Senset swim in Kardamyli. Overall the tour provided me with what I feel is a "true" and total Greek experience from historical, cultural and economic. But we did 2 back to back tours. This was my second Rick Steve's tour, and it was absolutely wonderful. Our guide, Fillippos was amazing. He had incredible people skills, was knowledgeable, and told us about the lives of the Greek people since the recession of 2008. Fillipos gave a a list of Greek phrases and encouraged us to speak to peopleHe choose interesting restaurants for us when we shared in group dinners, and always had a litttle "surprise" -Greek dancing, music, wine tasting or a cooking lesson. He gets ten stars!

This was overall an excellent tour for those who enjoy visiting ruins and museums and learning the history behind the sites. I enjoyed it immensely. It included a lot of walking so you must be pretty fit since much of it was rocky and steep. Athens was the one real city on the tour, and it was crowded and vibrant as a big city should be.The others were much smaller, but all had something to offer and were worth the visit.Thoroughly enjoyed the beach days, particularly Hydra. Great little island!

"Well, I enjoyed all the sights but which one was a wow? I guess the first night-time view of the Acropolis when I arrived at 10 pm two days before the tour. Yes, I'm here--it's there! Other than that, I want to commend Fillipos for creating moments with his selection of out-of-the way restaurants in non-touristed areas, particularly the one with the three local musicians, and also the mezzos dinner in Athens. First of all, Filippos was outstanding. He has wonderful knowledge of history, geography, politics, archaeology, arts, music, language and is a great communicator. Our guide Apostolos made this very good tour into a great tour. His knowledge and love of Greece was inspiring. He did a good job of showing both the old ancient Greece along with the Greece of today and how the Greek people live and have fun. Greece, like all of the other Rick Steves tours, I have taken, was an excellent venture with a conscientious tour guide and congenial travel mates. The outstanding aspects of Greece in particular were the stunning landscape (outside of Athens which is not particularly beautiful), the hospitality of the people and the high caliber of the cuisine, particularly in terms of the quality of the ingredients. Potential travelers should be warned about the terrain which is often perilous.

"I found the tour of Olympia to be the most interesting because athletic competition is something that we have in our own society so the content was more approachable. I also thought the attitudes of the ancient Greeks towards athletics showcased the values of their culture and society. "One of the most exciting experiences for me was going to the Acropolis and seeing this, one of the most significant buildings in world history, still standing. After the tour was over, my wife and I went through the Agora on our own (not sure why that is not included in the tour) and really found that the RS self-guided tour added a lot to our appreciation of the site. I also really enjoyed seeing the various rock formations on our train ride as these rocks reminded me of southern Utah."

First I was thrown how little I new about Greece & Greeks. The historical sites, ruins and knowledge, that was present so long ago. I liked most the people & small villages. How they were able to maintain their culture through all the occupations. And that the landscape was hilly and mountainous. And climate was like home.

We travel with another couple on the Rick Steves tours. I was the hold out for going to Greece. The majority won & I went with them. It was the most fabulous tour ever! Greece is a fantastic place. The people, the food, the sites, the tour guides, the history! I never realized that Greece was so hilly and mountainous. It is a lot of work to climb the stairs up and down as much as we did. I am glad to say that I was able to keep up. I was the slowest but, our guide had an abundance of patience!

"How do I pick just one? I think the historical connections that are shared by all people, helped me to understand more about all people. Standing at the entrance archway in Olympia, gave me a huge sense of connectedness from ancient times to today. The amphitheaters gave me another connection. The list goes on. I can't choose just one!"

I honestly could not have imagined a better tour experience. Being a history nerd that also enjoys beach time, the Athens & the Heart of Greece in 14 Days Tour could not have been a better balance! Between reveling in 15th Century BCE history and finding secluded crystal clear beaches, this was the perfect tour. Our tour guide was fantastic, our local guides were wonderful, and our bus driver was truly a magician! We were able to experience more of Greece than we ever could have on our own!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Standing inside the Treasury of Atreus (beehive tomb from 15th century bce) was simply magic. Nothing could prepare me for the feeling of standing in a spot that so many other humans and animals over time have visited. The feeling of the significance of this location was only heightened by our wonderfully dramatic local guide. Standing in a spot that is quite literally out of my old text books is a memory that I'll always treasure (no pun intended)."

I've been on 4 other European tours (one with RS to Prague and Budapest) and this was by far my favorite. Everything exceeded my expectations: the food, the scenery, the history. Each new place we went became my "favorite" and each historical site we visited left me amazed. My fellow travelers and awesome tour guide also made the trip so much more enjoyable. When it came time to leave, my heart was heavy and I was already planning my return. This was the trip of a lifetime for me!

"How do I choose?! Better question is what wasn't a "wow" moment! The scenery was breathtaking, from Delphi to our lunch stop at Limeni, to the island of Hydra. I didn't realize just how beautiful Greece is. But I think if I had to choose a "wow" moment it would be the Bee Hive tomb in Mycenae. Standing under the 120 ton lintel stone, it's hard to grasp how a society built something so impressive over 3000 years ago. And, of course, the Parthenon will always be the ultimate "wow" moment!"

This was my first Rick Steves tour, and it far exceeded my expectations. It was well-organized, educational, led by an outstanding guide, and we had a congenial group of fellow travelers. I liked the fact that the tour gave us some free time to explore on our own as well. Where to start? Greece was a revelation. Mountainous and rugged, turquoise blue waters and beautiful beaches, ancient, yet well-preserved historic sites, friendly people, incredible food. We saw and experienced all of it during this tour, which was a perfect blend of scheduled tour time and free time to explore on our own. I loved that we went to many smaller towns that are not too touristy, it was fun to explore them and learn about parts of Greece that are off the beaten path.

"My favorite wow moment was our arrival in Kardymili. While I enjoyed our time in busy, gritty Athens and then the drive through the surprisingly mountainous northern part of the Peloponnese, arriving in this tiny seaside town, located on a crystal clear, blue bay, was exhilarating. As usual with Rick Steve's tours, my experience was wonderful. Our guide Apostolos, was superb; his knowledge and pride in Greek culture was clearly evident, and his ability to inform the group was amazing. This was a wonderful tour with very compatible members! The first part was highly educational and more rigorous physically while touring ancient sites that came alive with explanations by outstanding local guides. Later seaside stays were more laid back, but equally interesting. Bus rides were enjoyable and not too long, thanks to the beautiful scenery and Apostolos' commentaries. I loved visiting the small towns. We had enough time to explore on our own and relax. Hydra was idyllic!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"On an optional walk that wound between back yards up to the Old Town from Kardamyli, our guide Apostolos stopped to talk to an 86-year-old man. He invited us to see his garden, and talked about his life, and his unrealized dream to come to America. Similar interactions occurred in other small villages. I loved swimming on Hydra and hiking to the top of Monemvasia after wandering its medieval lanes, but these unexpected personal glimpses into rural life were quiet but powerful "wow" moments."

Especially liked the varied, beautiful and interesting itinerary of the trip.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Probably our 4-person group's face-to-face encounter with a bull and herd of cows on a single-track trail coming down the mountain from Agia Sofia in Kardamyli. On the way down from the church, we took an alternate trail back, began to wonder whether we could get back the way we were going, and then ran into the bull coming right at us at a sharp turn in the trail; we backed down the trail a way until we could get off the path and let the determined cows go where they clearly wanted to go. This was a very well traveled group that was on our tour which made for some great conversation and insights into further travel. Our guide Apostolos, was friendly, knowledgeable, professional, fun, and so genuine about his love for his country. The tour was somewhat strenuous, as noted in the brochure, but I would highly recommend it to anyone who can handle the walking/stairs.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Each archeological site really was a 'wow' moment of its own when you realize how far back the site and it's buildings go. It was wonderful to meet some locals and spend time hearing about their family and their life in Greece. If it wasn't for Apostolos, we wouldn't have had that experience. This was a taste of real Greece, a 'wow' moment for me. I loved being in the little villages and out of the way places rather than just in those 'travel brochure spots'."

This was certainly the most rigorous tour we've done. But that is OK, we were well warned. ?????????, our guide, always gave plenty of suggestions for less strenuous options. I thought the tour guide was outstanding. He was personable, witty and maintained a professional demeanor at all times. He was well organized and on time every day. He provided information and personal experiences to stimulate your perceptions of Greece. We visited with locals that he knew that gave us a sense of what Greece was like fifty years ago. The national elections were taking place and he explained the system and how it is different from our elections. I can't say enough about Apost

"There were many "wow" moments during the tour. Apostolos made sure that everyone had the best time. The group dynamics were very good....people talked to everyone and i felt very comfortable. Our arrival at different landmarks was timed to be most beneficial to the group. Our meeting with one of his acquaintances in his backyard was very heartwarming and made the trip very special. Apostolos is a gem...."

Overall, this was a very successful tour experience; I would consider another Rick Steve's tour in the future. The tour was well organized and Filippos was an awesome guide; the sites were excellent and interpretation was good; the bus driver was fantastic; the hotels were fine; the food was good; the local guides were helpful; Filippos took care of many, many details allowing us to relax and enjoy the experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I was taken aback by the ruggedness of Greek terrain and the incredible building that has occurred over time in such steep areas. The theater at Epidavros; the treasury of Atreus, the Lion Gate, and other structures at Mycenae; and the museum displays were fantastic!"

We had such a fabulous trip. We came on this trip on the suggestion of our friends who we travelled with. As we had never thought about going to Greece we had no idea what to expect and just 'went along' for the ride, so to speak. We were totally impressed with the organization, itinerary, food, hotels, and guides. It was impressive to see how many other members of our group were regular Rick Steves travelers. We will, most definitely be traveling with Rick Steves ion the future

Sort of knew what to expect for Athens, but the rest of Greece was a complete surprise. All the rest of the tour through beaches and mountains was wonderfully scenic as well as of cultural and historical interest. This was our 5th Rick Steve's tour and we knew that we loved this format, but our guide, Philipos, was exceptional. Would love to have him show us the northern part of his country.

Overall this was the best tour of the three I have been on. I did not do a lot of research but was more impressed than I expected. Everything ran so smoothly. Filippos was an amazing guide. I loved the fact that several times we just went with the flow and there was no stress, only positive attitudes and grateful hearts.

"There were a couple actually. 1) First and foremost I travel for food and scenery and those did not disappoint, both were incredible. 2) I loved the small town feel we got in several towns, not just the hustle and bustle of Athens. 3) The seaside villages were so charming, love being near the water and did not realize we would be spending so much time near beaches and such."

Another great Rick Steve's tour. Greece was a fascinating place to visit, and in true Rick Steve's style this "back door" approach will show you the real Greece (not just the tourist infested sites). Second key ingredient for a great tour is a great guide, and Filippos was outstanding. Everything went off without a hitch, he was a wealth of information, and oozes the spirit and vitality of the Greek people -- his determination for us to experience that really made the trip great.

"Hard not to be wowed by walking around 2,000 to 3,000 old ruins at a number of stops along the way and can't forget the many breathtaking views from on high all along the route. But really cherished some of the simpler moments like eating lunch at a beautiful beach-side cafe in Kardamili, strolling the streets of Nafplio watching the Greek families enjoy their weekend in the city square, and the perfect end to the trip relaxing on a quiet beach in Hydra under a thatched umbrella."

Fillippos was fantastic which enhanced the overall tour experience. I was also lucky to tour with a great group of people. I enjoyed all of the stops on the tour. There is quite a bit of bus time but it was always broken up in 1 1/2 increments which made the time go by. Plus, Greece is a beautiful country and I was happy to listen to my audio book and stare out the window at the countryside.

I have been on two My-Way tours and enjoyed them both tremendously. However, I had reservations about a tour. Visions of pennant waving guides rushing harried participants from one site or picture to another. I should have known better with one of your tours. Our Greece tour was carefully choreographed to give the broadest range of experiences: urban, rural, countryside, oceanside. It was a breathtaking sweep of a large part of Greece. Personal time at each site was much appreciated.

Favorite "WOW" moment

The isolated monasteries(Osios Lukas) The people: warm, ebullient, resolute. The food: fresh, flavorful. From home-cooking to urban-sophisticated it was happy bites. Lastly, but certainly not least, our bus-drivers skill in negotiating hair-pin turns, switch-backs and hair-raising traffic. Bravo!"

We explored a spectacularly beautiful portion of Greece from urban centers to remote rocky seashore and alpine forests with all the hillside villages and farms in between. Everything I expected and more. Maria was phenomenal! Her knowledge of history, culture & mythology and her first hand experience as a resident of Greece added enormous insight throughout the trip. Got an entirely new mind picture of the geography of Greece--all one sees in the movies is islands and blue water: these were present, in abundance, but account for only a small part of the whole country. Loved the mountains, the mountain villages, the WWII resistance... but was saddened by the fact that said villages are apparently for the most part deserted. Something wrong there.

We walked through places like Mycenae, where real history blurs into myth, and you feel like you could almost pass through a thin veil where the gods still hang around, waiting to toy with humans. The space of 3000 years seems to shrink and "ancient" history starts to feel much closer to us."

My wife and I had a great time. Greece is such a beautiful and diverse country. So much history and beauty. There was something new and exciting every day.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I loved being in Olympia and exploring the site of the first Olympics. Being able to stand on a site that dates back over 2700 years is special. I also enjoyed how our guide related what the Olympics stood for. It was a very moving experiences."

I had no idea Greece was so diverse. The countryside, from mountain to vineyard to seaside as outstandingly beautiful. Our tour guide, Apostolos, was polished and knowledgeable. Our group was kind and compatible.

"First seeing the Acropolis from the upstairs bar in our hotel. Several interactions with the locals gave me a whole new perspective on the heart of the Greek people."

Wonderful tour!! It could not have been better, thanks to the best guide possible: Apostolos. He made the tour the trip of a lifetime. The itinerary and execution were flawless. Ancient ruins, great food and wine, wonderful people, an ancient landscape, combined with our guide Apostolos made this the best tour ever!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My wow moment was simply a gradual realization of how the many generations of ancient peoples who inhabited this corner of our planet mined stone from the ground to build huge fortresses both for defense and to wage war, but simultaneously used the same stone to create some of the best art the world has ever seen. And at the same time they created many major democratic and scientific principles and literature that have endured to this day."

Walking in the footsteps of the Gods! Walking in the footsteps of the people who laid the foundations of modern life! What a great trip and a great experience. This was our fifth EOTD tour because we really have found these tours to include so much of what we value when we travel - information, history, great sites and THE ABSOLUTELY BEST GUIDES!

We had a wonderful time. Apostolos was a wonderful tour guide and the tour had the right mix of busy days and slow periods. We saw some of the most important sites but also some of the less traveled but still fascinating places. Truly one of the best trips I've ever been on.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It's hard to say. Delphi was fabulous, partially because it's just a fascinating place and partially because Penny, our local guide, was incredible. But I loved the Agora in Athens, Monemvasia and Hydra as well."

We took our tour in May and afterward spent two additional weeks in Greece. Rick Steve's Tour provided us a good grounding for the rest of our time there. We thoroughly enjoyed the group of people that we traveled with on the tour. Each one was outstanding and offered a good feeling of community in the small group.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Connecting with the people in Greece. When we were hiking in our group and were invited into a garden, tended by an older gentleman. He was very welcoming and appreciated showing us around. Also in the same town, there was a Jazz/Blues festival going on and it was a bonus to take in some of the shows. (Kardamyli) Also trying to understand the ways of the Greeks. How they have struggled over the centuries touched my sense of humanity and compassion."

Overall I would have to say the tour met all my expectations. I had seen the video covering the route we followed but was still delightfully surprised by unexpected 'gems' along the way. The pace was good and the accommodations were very good. Our guides were generally excellent.

"That had to be Hydra. Two days 'off' and a chance to really relax. The entire time on the island was a treat with opportunities for hiking and relaxing. Even had a chance to chase down traces of Leonard Cohen."

We were delighted with our Greece tour! Filippos, our wonderful and experienced tour guide, helped us understand Greek history and civilization, while adding his own personal spin in showing us the Greece of today. Our traveling group was fun, the food was delicious and every last detail of the tour was planned out in advance. This was our second Rick Steves tour and we're excited to participate in another tour. This was truly an all-around top notch Rick Steves tour experience.

"The whole cumulative Greece tour was a "wow" moment! Each of the carefully selected locations were memorable and contributed to a outstanding experience. We came home with a whole new understanding of Greece, and overall this was a amazing tour that we won't forget. Highly recommend this unique and special tour of Greece!"

We have taken several RS tours and fellow travelers always mentioned Greece as one of their favorite destinations. We took this trip and fell in love with the country. Our guide, Filippos, was phenomenal. Our group was made up of veteran travelers, all interested to soak up the information provided by Filippos as well as the city guides. Everyone was "game" to participate and we had a very easy comfort level with fellow travelers.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"On our free day, we hiked to a Elias monastery on a hilltop above Hydra. The zigzag path to the summit was steep but with easy footing. We passed mules lugging building supplies up the hill so the monks could make repairs. We saw the harbor down below from a distance. The peace and solitude of the monastery site once we arrived was serene."

Terrific experience with a great lead guide (Filippos), a convivial and experienced group of travelers and excellent accomodations. We greatly appreciate the exceptional supporting guides in each location, the scale of the hotels (mostly family owned) and the thoughtful pacing of the trip -- which involves a fair amount of bus travel.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Visiting and staying in some of the smaller towns in the mountains over the first half of our journey. I was largely unfamiliar with the rugged mountainous region of Greece and was stunned by the beauty of mountain villages like Lagadia. Seeing the high profile sites (Acropolis, Delphi, Olympia) was memorable of course, but it was the beauty of the mountain villages that surprised me the most."

The Greece tour was an exceptional tour in many ways. The rich and varied history, the interesting sites that we visited and the lovely group of travelers led by Filipinos made for a great experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I believe my favorite moment was the view from the top after climbing to the ruins above Monemvasia. When we initially saw the mountain that looked like Gibraltar, we considered staying behind. I'm so glad we made the effort because the views from the top were spectacular and the town itself was charming. The time spent on the island of Hydra was another highlight."

An excellent experience in every way. Everything we hoped for and more. We loved the history, culture, and wonderful diversity of Greece. Our guide Filippos was outstanding--so well organized, professional, and knowledgeable. He worked tirelessly to ensure that we had the best experience possible. Our fellow travellers were fun, our driver one of the best!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were many. We enjoyed all the ancient sites--Delphi, Olympia, Mycenae, and the many medieval churches we visited, especially the tiny church just outside the mountain village of Kastania in the Mani peninsula. But our favorite "wow" moment must have been when the rain stopped and the sun came out as we approached the beautiful temple of Athena at Delphi. It was magical."

"Our trip to ancient Olympia. Our visit to the site of the first Olympics held there thousands of years ago. The opportunity to see and walk the track were the runners first competed. I loved every minute of this tour and Greece is now my favourite country in Europe! Our guide, Fillipos was exceptionally good. His knowledge of history and culture was fantastic, especially his knowledge of Greek plays and mythology. The tour was well paced and I felt we experienced a well-rounded sampling of Greece, from Greek dancing and music, to food, to archeological and historical sites. Our driver, Christos, was extremely competent and a lovely person as well.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were so many! Seeing the Parthenon for the first time blew me away! I taught art so seeing the treasures in my art history books was amazing - the Lion's Gate, the gold mask of Agammemnon, the Archaic statues and the sites of Olympia, and Delphi, especially since it was misty and mysterious when we visited Delphi! Also sleeping in an original castle room at Marianna's Hotel in Nafplio ranks right up there! I loved having dinner at a restaurant patio right next to the ocean in Kardamyli!"

We have vacationed in Europe many times, all on our own. This was our first ever tour. Consequently, we were a little apprehensive. Our apprehensions were totally unfounded. The tour was well planned and expertly [INVALID]d. We saw and learned much more on this tour than we could have possibly seen and learned on our own. For example, we could have found the little towns in that the tour visited, but we would never have learned what we learned from Ioanna and the local guides.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Difficult question. For Ned, it was seeing the actual bronze helmet worn by the Athenian General Miltiades at the Battle of Marathon. For Karen, it was seeing the ancient frescos in Mystras (where we had a most knowledgeable local guide)."
