Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Greece

At 6 p.m. we'll meet at our hotel near Athens' pedestrian-friendly Plaka neighborhood for a "Welcome to Athens" meeting. Then we'll get oriented to our neighborhood and walk to a nearby restaurant where we can get acquainted over dinner. Sleep in Athens (2 nights). No bus. Walking: light.

Day 2: Athens' Acropolis

This morning we'll hike to the top of Athens' legendary Acropolis, where we'll take a walking tour of its 2,500-year-old Golden Age temples, dominated by the dramatic Parthenon. We'll then work our way down and tour the sleek new Acropolis Museum, custom built to showcase the amazing Parthenon sculptures. Your afternoon and evening are free for exploring Athens' marketplaces — the ancient Agora and the modern Plaka's labyrinth of inviting streets, squares, shops, and cafés. No bus. Walking: strenuous.

Day 3: Greek Treasures and Delphi

This morning we'll tour Athens' impressive National Archaeological Museum, home to amazingly preserved masterpieces in marble, bronze, and gold. Then we'll leave the city and drive into the rugged countryside. In a dramatic setting on the flanks of 8,000-foot Mt. Parnassus we'll enjoy the fresh air and tour the mystical ruins of Delphi. Here, 25 centuries ago, the celebrated oracle allowed mere mortals to converse with the gods. This evening we'll have dinner together and sleep in the town of Delphi (1 night). Bus: 4 hours. Walking: strenuous.

Day 4: Peloponnese Mountains

Today we'll cross over the Gulf of Corinth to the Peloponnese, where we'll temporarily leave our bus for a steep, scenic cog railway ride past the waterfalls and caves lining the narrow Vouraikos Gorge. At a riverside café in the mountain village of Planitero, we will enjoy a lunch of freshly caught trout and other Greek specialties before our bus takes us to our destination high up in the Menalon Mountains. Tonight we will enjoy dinner together. Sleep in or near Lagkadia (1 night). Train: 1 hour. Bus: 5 hours. Walking: light.

Day 5: Ancient Olympia

This morning's winding mountain drive will take us to Olympia, site of the world's first Olympics, over 2,700 years ago. There we'll take a vivid walking tour of Olympia's ancient athletic venues, temples, and museum, followed by lunch together. This afternoon's drive will take us along sweeping views of the Ionian Sea to a relaxed seaside village on the Mani Peninsula, where we'll sleep (2 nights). Bus: 5 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 6: Seaside Vacation

The Mani is an ideal place to enjoy a "vacation from your vacation." After some orientation by your guide, the day is all yours. You might hike along the ancient cobbled paths that wind their way through the nearby hills — or just relax on the beach — and end your day with a grilled seafood dinner and a view from the little taverna you've discovered. No bus. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 7: Mani Villages

We'll follow the coast to the isolated Mani Peninsula, home to generations-long clan wars, salt-of-the-earth villages, and unique pyrgospita — tower houses. If Greece had a Tombstone and an O.K. Corral, here is where they'd be. We will enjoy lunch together, and after making a few off-the-beaten-path discoveries, we'll ride on to the dramatically set medieval town of Monemvasia, where you'll be free for dinner. Sleep in mainland Monemvasia (2 nights). Bus: 5 hours. Walking: light.

Day 8: Medieval Monemvasia

This morning we'll cross the causeway to tackle the massive rock that shoots straight up out of the blue-green Aegean Sea. After an orientation walk around Monemvasia's cozy little Lower Town, the rest of the day is free. You can wander more of the romantic walled town or take a swim in the Aegean. Those who want a workout can hike to the very top of the rock. You will be rewarded with sweeping Aegean views and a chance to explore the ruins of the Upper Town — a living museum of Byzantine, Ottoman, and Venetian history. This afternoon we'll enjoy a cooking demonstration, followed by dinner together. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 9: Byzantine Mystras

Today we'll head up into the heart of the Peloponnese, where we'll tour the haunting ruins of the fortress town of Mystras and its still-standing group of Byzantine churches. After stopping in nearby Sparta for lunch, we'll continue north to our destination: the delightful, fortress-topped harbor town of Nafplio. We'll enjoy a Greek wine and ouzo tasting, and sleep in Nafplio (2 nights). Bus: 5 hours. Walking: strenuous.

Day 10: Mycenae and Nafplio

After breakfast we'll take a short drive to mysterious Mycenae, the fortified city founded by Perseus a thousand years before the Parthenon was built. We'll take a walking tour through the grand Lion Gate, along the "cyclopean" walls, and into a remarkably domed tholos tomb. Then we'll return to Nafplio for a free afternoon to explore the colorful alleyways of the Old Town, ride a boat to the little castle island in the harbor, or hike up to enjoy a Venetian fortress view. We'll regroup for dinner together this evening. Bus: 1 hour. Walking: moderate.

Day 11: Ancient Epidavros

This morning we'll drive to nearby Epidavros. Once the most famous healing center in the Mediterranean, today's star attraction is its ancient theater, large enough to accommodate 14,000. We'll learn about the roots of medicine and drama here, before hopping a boat to the idyllic traffic-free island of Hydra, where we'll sleep (2 nights). Boat: ½ hour. Bus: 2 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 12: Island of Hydra

Your entire day is free to soak up the whitewashed architecture as you wander Hydra's narrow streets and harbor promenade. You might swim at a nearby beach, hike across the island, or try to make friends with a donkey. We will cap our island vacation with a relaxing sunset happy hour. No bus. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 13: Return to Athens

This morning we'll take a ferry ride to Piraeus, where our bus will be waiting to take us back to our Athens hotel. Your afternoon is free to wander and shop through the Plaka, or explore other parts of this bustling city. Tonight we'll gaze at the floodlit Acropolis and enjoy a final dinner together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Opa! Sleep in Athens (1 night). Boat: 2 hours. Bus: 1 hour. Walking: light.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. You can easily catch a cab for the airport, or to nearby Piraeus where a fleet of ferries awaits to transport those with time to even more Greek destinations. Antio!

Athens & the Heart of Greece in 14 Days Tour exceeded my expectations. This was our first Rick Steves tour which started in Athens and toured by bus in a counter clockwise direction across southern Greece visiting many historical sites, and beautiful mountain and seaside villages. Overall-we had good food, learned a few Greek words, learned about Greek history, and visited a beautiful country.

"My favorites are swimming at the beach in Kardemyli, walking through the maze of paths in lower Monemvasia, and the Greek dinner with live entertainment in Nafplio."

This was my first time visiting Greece and this tour exceeded my expectations. Our guide Colin was able to bring the history and archeology alive, and then hand us over to expert Greek guides who took us through the ancient sites sharing their extensive knowledge with good humour and skill. I am so pleased that Rick Steve's tours combine history, culture, diverse towns and landscapes as well as good food and wine.

"At the amphitheater in Epidavros a 2500 year old site, one of our tour members stood in the centre of the stage and recited Shakespeare. The rest of us were up in the top tiers and could hear him perfectly. The theatre was built to hold 15,0000!"

This was our second Rick Steves tour, and I wondered if it could possibly be as good overall as our first (Basque). It was! The itinerary, our guide Colin, our fellow travelers, the food, and Greece itself, all made for an incredible two weeks.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The highlight of my Greek adventure was swimming in the Aegean Sea, in four different towns along the southern Peloponnese. I have never seen water as clear, and combined with a perfect temperature, and a saltiness that gave amazing buoyancy, it was an unforgettable experience. My favorite museum experience was in the National Archaeological Museum, looking at the bronze running horse with a boy atop, stunning in the red room, and learning about the Antikythera mechanism."

The tour more than met my expectations. It provided me an understanding of Greek culture and its current issues. My initial interest in the trip was to see the ancient Greek sites and learn more about its history. I was not disappointed with this part, in fact it was excellent. Learning about the rest of Greek history turned out to be very fascinating and also excellent.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Olympia tour is amazing. My favourite wow moment was in the museum learning that the helmet Miltiades actually wore at Marathon was right in front of me."

An extremely congenial group made the tour most enjoyable. Visiting so many historical sites, many from 1500 years BC, with an excellent historical background provided by Colin was so educational with a wow factor. Accommodation in small family run hotels was much preferable to large 'could be anywhere hotels'. Climbing up and down many stairs to reach some of these hotels was not a great experience. The food was excellent, particularly at the lunches and dinners arranged by Colin.

Colin is very knowledgeable and gave us some incite into the culture and economy of Greece. I am not into history, I slept through my Western Civilization class many decades ago. However Colin held my attention and made the information relevant and interesting. Experiencing, in a group setting, what was close to non-tourists eat fair was really nice. The choices of eating venue was interesting and quite an experience.

Very satisfied with this tour. Guide was outstanding. Participants were easy going and affable. Enjoyed the hiking opportunities. Standing for extended periods did create some discomfort though. Local guides were very informative, personable and fun - for the most part. Tour of the monastery - don't remember exactly where - was not that interesting to me. Hiking down the hill was enjoyable though.

First of all the tour guide and other guides at each site get an outstanding rating. Maria had the passion and personal stories that made everyone listen and feel every word. She was interesting and fun but yet very professional. The food was good, and the family style serving was festive. The last meal of the tour was delicious and a great way to end the trip. The "very good" rating rather than " outstanding " rating is for the rooms. Shower heads didn't work and rooms were bad.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Ancient Olympia was our favorite site. It was easy to visualize what happened years ago with the tour guide's words. Our favorite meal was the calamari and fish, and the best room was at Vula's at Kardamyli."

Tour was an education. First - couldn't have had a better guide to lead the trip. Maria was outstanding both in her knowledge of the place but also management of tour details. The sites visited and tour arrangements were first rate and included places that I would never have included in any self guided trip. Islands were great but the small villages were a special treat. In my estimation Maria is the ultimate professional - knowlegeable, funny but serious when needed. Her stories = special

Athens & the Heart of Greece began and ended happily at the Hera Hotel 5th floor bar where, with Banks and Val Warden, dear friends for 40 years, we shared anticipation for the journey to come and, on the 14th day, shared memories of a fantastic trip. The libation of choice for me and Val, a now traditional Aperol Spritz, and a Greek beer for the men. There were many surprises along the way- all happy ones. I would love to do it all again. With Maria Sioulas as guide and mentor.

I was so impressed with overall experience. It was a good balance of time being with others and being taught/led by a guide and having time to explore on our own. Would love to see a tour that included some of northern Greece.

This trip totally exceeded my expectations. All the "biggies" were covered but it was the many unexpected, or so called little things that really made it special. It truly felt like a "back-door" adventure while being on a tour. A perfect mixture of coordinated group travel and time on-your-own. There was an exceptional diversity of sites and experiences. Having a superb tour guide was icing on the cake!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"This is an unfair question. Better stated, "What was your favorite "wow" moment of each day?" Literally every day had a wow moment and it seemed like each one exceeded the previous one. That's not an easy accomplishment when you start with the Parthenon on the Acropolis."

Our Best of Greece was a compelling deep dive into overlapping waves of Greek history, archeology, mythology, architecture, customs, cuisine, and culture with numerous face to face interactions with local people. We loved the breathtaking coastal drives along the sheer cliffs and the cultural integrity of the small villages hugging the mountainous terrain. From the Acropolis to Delphi to Hydra, our experiences exceeded our expectations and we returned home renewed and inspired.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The remarkable and mysterious remains of Mystras and Delphi, the 1600 B.C. statues, temples, and artifacts, the remarkable prehistory linguistic threads that are woven into our contemporary use of language, and the genuine warmth of the Greek people. And...the colorful singing sunsets, conveying the cosmic consciousness that we all share."

Enjoyment, pleasure and learning with a wonderful group of people was the experience. The mixture of learning Greek history and culture with the pleasure of delicious meals and social fun with others made this a truly memorable trip. Experiencing some opportunities to have direct contact with the locals at wine and olive tastings and talks about the foods of Greece from a local grocer in Athens made the tour something special and unique.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I like to photograph. Waking up early to photograph the sunrise at Hydra and capture the history of Hydra's Fort with its cannons in a beautiful sunrise of color was truly a "wow" moment. The photographic opportunities in Hydra are truly amazing in being able to provide a picture of its unique culture of no cars, beautiful seacoast scenes and important history."

This was my 13th RS trip and it met the high standards set by Uncle Rick. First of all, our guide Ioanna was absolutely wonderful. She has a great sense of humor in addition to her thorough and professional training as a guide. We learned lots throughout the tour, but there were many light moments as well - cooking class and Greek music and dancing. Overall, it was a great experience - wonderful sites, great tour mates, delicious food, great fun!!!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I think Monemvasia provided my WOW moment. You can't really imagine the Rock until you are actually faced with it. I didn't think that I was going to climb it, but when we got there my two tour mates (Cindi and Jan) and I decided we would give it a try with the understanding that we could always turn back. So we started off and pretty soon we were 2/3 of the way up - so then there was no way that we would stop. The views and lovely church were worth it. It felt like a great accomplishment."

What an incredible trip - it was the best ever! I can't believe I actually walked up to the Acropolis and Parthenon; that I was Delphi and so many places that I have always read about, the battles, the victors and the heroic warriors who made the choice to stand their ground and face death with bravery. Every hotel/pension where we stayed was beautiful and so clean. The meals we shared as a family were so good - I really miss the group, the meals, all of our talks and discussions.

Every twist and turn of the road through the mountains and around the coast of Greece were riveting."

Being my first Rick Steve's tour, the experience was all that I expected yet way more than I expected. Having prior European tours experience and a couple of "student" tours as a parent and teacher, I really enjoyed the city centered well rounded experience. The tour was excellent and exceeded our expectations. This was our third Rick Steves tour and we had high expectations. Our schedule was changed so we went to the National Archeology museum on our last day. This should be a permanent change. Having the museum last pulled together all the places we visited. I didn't factor in terrific additions like a cooking class, an evening wine & cheese get-together, visits to even older civilizations, a very picturesque train tour, festive group meals...Great!

"This tour is packed full of WOW moments. The classical buildings and sites are only the beginning....and they were surely a WOW. Kardamyli was so charming, a terrific place for rambling and just watching the sea. This was followed by Monemvasia and it's amazing Medieval village on a rock. Another WOW. Finally there was Hydra island - only donkeys and beautiful walkable villages. Another Wow. 14 days packed with amazing memories....a first class vacation."

My experience on this Rick Steves tour was excellent: the group was great, the guide quite knowledgeable on Greek history and lore, the places we visited interesting and enjoyable. As a solo traveler I face special travel challenges, but I found none insurmountable on this tour. My assigned roommate was a most fortunate match and our tour guide's accessibility and determination that all went well for each of us inspired confidence and assured a safe and pleasant journey for all.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Perhaps the most awe filled experience I can recall is pondering the age and historical significance of the places we visited in Greece. All the places we visited were meaningful as cultural representations of the contribution of the Greeks to society in general. I now have a place and time to connect to the tales of Homer and the oracles of Delphi and many other such cultural phenomenon."

It was the most heart-warming, fun and rewarding tour experience and the best way to be introduced to Greece for the first time and with my first Rick Steve's tour!!! (My Grandparents on both my Mother and Father's side(s) were from Greece and am so glad that I was able to experience Greece through the eyes and heart and knowledge of our guide, Danae Kousouri. I felt at home and part of family!!!) Also, the whole group of fantastic people we traveled with made the experience "outstanding".

Another great RS Tour in the books (#8). Our guide Filippos is one of the best. His vast knowledge of Greece was complimented by his tales of current-day Greece and entertaining personal-interest stories that made you laugh. The tour was a perfect blend of structured and free time to explore. Besides the ancient historical sites and museums, the itinerary takes the 'road less traveled' to enjoy the natural beauty of the mountains, sea and small towns of Greece.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"there were many! In terms of ancient historical sites it was the Acropolis of Athens, the ruins of Delphi, and the site of the world's first Olympics (running in the arena). However, it's hard to top 'sipping into sunset' by the blue-green sea on the island of Hydra (a favorite)."

This was my second Rick Steves tour. Last year I told my wife of 42 years that I was finally ready to start traveling, following retirement, but it was on the condition that we had to have a good time. The itinerary was busy yet I never felt rushed and really enjoyed the days spent in the choria' or Greek villages.

I felt that I was successfully immersed in Greece, both ancient and modern. Our superb tour leader made the history and ancient sites come alive and connected them to Greece's modern history and current situation. The local guides were adept at helping us grasp the essence of each place and its key particulars. I was impressed at how rugged Greece is. It's like Appalachia with fewer trees. EXCELLENT tour guide!! Extremely capable bus driver! A diverse, but amazingly compatible tour group. Soooo many sights; soooo many memories! Danae went out to her way to work with my gluten and caw-dairy food allergies; a couple times she made sure the hotels carried a couple breakfast products just for me, and she always made sure during our group dinners that the chefs had dishes that I could eat. This will be my all-time favorite culinary tour.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were many; I cannot pick just one. What we saw and learned in the museums and the site-visits has altered my sense of what "old" is (after many sites from B.C. I found myself writing off the Byzantine period because it was too modern). From our Italy trip I went to Greece asking "why did the Romans--who I have long admired--copy the Greeks?" Now I understand. As a Christian, I grew in my understanding of, and appreciation for, the Orthodox tradition."

The hike to the top and the Agia Sofia were worth the effort & sweat on a hot day. 1C. The Agora with the Rick Steves app guide the place is such an important part of our Western civilization, and the tour app was terrific for my wife and myself. 1D. Nafplio hotel and terrace/view. 1E. Athens and the Heart of Greece tour exceeded our expectations in nearly every way. The ancient ruins and museums were more expansive and impressive that we even imagined. Our guide Colin made it an especially rewarding experience due to his expansive knowledge of Greek history and culture.

We had a good time on this tour although we both would have appreciated a more balanced approach. There was such a heavy emphasis on history and ruins to the exclusion of other topics. It's mind boggling to walk among the ancient ruins and then see artifacts in the museums dating back hundreds (and in some cases, thousands) of years BC. Very enjoyable trip! Anastasia was a most dedicated, fun, & informed tour guide. The entire group bonded well together & we've been communicating since. Beyond my expectations. We have traveled previously using Rick Steves books as our guide. This, though, was our first tour. I loved not having to be the CEO of my own vacation. We would do it again. Like our previous Portugal tour, we enjoyed not being "herd," with a group of compatible, responsible fellow group members that was small enough to not be overwhelming. We were able to see and do things that we would not likely have done if we were traveling independently; however, we also had sufficient time and flexibility to do many things on own own away from the group. We saw and did many beautiful things and we feel we experienced Greece and its people.

The RS Greece tour was my 9th RS Tour, and was wonderful. Connie and I always traveled on our own, but we felt the tour you offered for Greece was a very efficient way to see a plethora of historic sites, as well as get to take in some beach-time. It was all that we hoped for. It was a pleasant mix of history, sight-seeing, and vacation. We were especially impressed by our fellow seasoned travelers - our conversations enhanced the overall experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The various historical sites were memorable, but our favorite "WOW" was the village of Nafplio because it was so romantic. It also was when Connie and I had lunch at a seaside café, a swim in the ocean, and had several wine-fueled conversations with our fellow pilgrims. Two of the guys and me cut-out early from the "dance-dinner" and drank wine and smoked cigars. Monemvasia was also a nice blend of what I just stated regarding Nafplio, but it was a distant second. Overall it was a good trip. However, I was expecting to see the country and the key archaeological sites but I was not prepared for 6 museums. That was too many. A lot of it was just redundant. I was also expecting to hear more about the country today, rather than 800 BC. And the roomy bus travel and group meals allowed the 4 of us to be together or separated as we chose at the time. I also appreciated that the bus drives were broken up by other activities such as the cog railway ride.

Really enjoyed learning all about the development of the Greek Civilization and visiting the classic Greek sites you have always heard about - Athens with the Acropolis, Delphi, and the site of the original Olympics. Seeing several hillside villages in the Peloponese as well as some lovely seaside towns added to our enjoyment. Having the opportunity to try new and different foods added to our adventure. Colin did an excellent job sharing information to give us perspectives on Greek life today

"Visiting Monemvasia's high summit on the group hike and surveying the beautiful blue sea and tiny village below us was a real Wow moment. Loved the Rick Steves tour to Greece! Rick Steves tours are the perfect combination of planned/scheduled time and unplanned/free time for exploring on our own. I toured as a single person, and had the preconceived notion that I would mostly be spending time with other singles as I assumed the couples would keep to themselves, but the tour is designed so that all tour participants get to know each other. I think I'm going to retire in Kardamyli!

Generally good but several serious problems. Too much free time. Could have been productively used to visit some very important sites which we drove very close to. For example Chaeronea, Plaetea, Leuctra, some of the most important battles in history happened here and we were within a few miles. Marathon and Thermopylae could be added. And how about Eleusis on road to Delphi, where the seasons began, Persephone stolen by Hades, sanctuary of Demeter - another serious omission. Con't below

"Seeing Acropolis for first time! Continuing from above , with Rick's sense of history also could have had short water cruise possibly with lunch, in Ydra. Waterfront unfortunately very commercial. Could also have taken short cruise to straits of Salamis where again one of the most important battles in history occurred. If some people want to rest or shop make these elective side trips. Consider interpreting Pnyx hill and agora- democracy began here!!"

"I loved the island of Hydra the most. But the "wow" moment came when touring the archaeological sites and museums and realizing how truly advanced the ancient people of Greece were. Seeing such mundane items as "safety pins" and tweezers, along with mechanisms with gears dating back to 300 BC or older, just floored me. Their cooking utensils, urns, frying pans really humbled me. As with all Rick Steves tours we have taken, I felt that I learned an incredible amount of information about Greece, past and present, in a 2-week span. This trip surpassed my hopes & expectations! I learned a lot, saw historic & interesting sites, had great food, & saw beautiful scenery. It was great group of fellow travelers & a fabulous guide. I especially appreciated the level of activity(strenuous at times, but so worth it!)...helped offset all the food I was eating & kept me in shape! "Lunch in Limeni was an outstanding 2 hours But, I liked it when we were in the small chapel earlier in the day and Ioanna explained the orientation of the alter. (I hope I have it right. In the tour business it seems each supplier has a different vision of what "value to the consumer" is. For some it is providing education, others it is providing perpetual activity. This tour struck a great balance between these 2 perspectives. While I might have done a few things differently if I were planning the trip myself, this trip was outstanding as an introduction to Greece. Nothing was over done. There was a nice mix of history and culture. The countryside we traveled through was beautiful, with all the wild flowers blooming. What a beautiful country. And the Greek people were wonderful. We need more Greek tours -- Northern Greece would be great.

"I cannot identify a specific "wow" moment. The trip as a whole was wonderful. From start to finish, this was the best of the four Rick Steves tours we've made. Our guide (Colin) was so knowledgeable and personable that we felt comfortable from our first meeting. This was an amazing trip - our 1st with Rick Steves. Colin (our main guide) and guides at each major site were excellent. Hotels were as promised - adequate-to-excellent local hotels with courteous innkeepers. Meals together were at memorable restaurants. Suggestions for on-our-own meals were also fine. We tried foods never before tried (I now love octopus!) and enjoyed the yogurts, Greek salads, etc. served with meals. Perhaps best of all, we had a terrific group of fellow travelers!

Immersed in history, educated the easy way by on-sight experts, in the fellowship of other travelers who were interested and interesting, cared for by David, Apostolos and Costas, and fed local cuisine in magical settings: I would say my overall experience was fabulous, fun, fantastic.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"One evening in Kardamili David and Costas prepared our evening meal: BBQ pork and sausages on Costas' grill (just happened to have it in the bowels of the bus). We dined under flowering citrus tress, the air resplendent with the fragrance of the blossoms and the grilling meats. Could anything be better than this? Yes. One of our group sang an aria from La Boheme. This was the kind of thrill I travel for: unexpected, magical, memorable, transcendent."

A wonderful tour all around. I felt like we saw the authentic Greece, not just the tourist Greece. The weather this time of year is perfect, and the wild flowers were at peak. This photographer was very happy. Great to be there over Easter - experiencing Easter week and joining in many of the Greek Orthodox traditions was a bonus. Kudos to our guides for being aware of the Easter week schedule and rituals in each town we were in and plugging us into that.

Our tour leader (David), our group and the local guides were all topnotch. Everyone in our group was punctual and the tour moved along in a very well-organized manner. David has an outstanding knowledge of Greece which he shared in talks on the bus, at mealtimes and on walks. I'm interested in all facets of Greek history so I appreciated everything - the ancient sites, the medieval sites (e.g. - Byzantine churches, walled towns such as at Monemvasia) and modern history.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I'm going to give you three "wow" moments: 1.The entire setting at Delphi on the side of a mountain. My wife & I hiked up & down the entire site. 2. Kalavryta - I had prior knowledge of the WW II NAZI atrocities here and did not realize that our tour was going to this precise spot. Once we were there, I realized that I had seen the story of Kalavryta on tv including the 13 Dec 1943 commemorations on the hillside outside of town. 3. Hiking to the top of the rock at Monemvasia."

On the way down my brain told me, "Oh Wow, this is really going to hurt!" After returning to the hotel, our guide, Maria, summoned a doctor who stitched me up. After our last year's Best of Italy tour, I never thought another tour could surpass it, but I was very mistaken. Greece thoroughly surprised and delighted me and I can't figure out why Rick doesn't have 2 or 3 different tours of this beautiful country. Ancient ruins coupled with the beautiful scenery (snow capped mountain peaks, sparkling turquoise water),food(oh my, the food), Greek people, all brought constant smiles and amazement. I loved this country and tour and want to see more!

Maria told us we'd be surprised, and she was spot on. History was amazing, as expected. But the beauty of the country, not just along the water, but in the many inland places we visited. I did not expect snow-capped mountains and acres and acres of beautiful wild flowers among the ruins. Loved all villages that I'd never heard of, and the people. Still can't keep all the ancient names/relationships/drama straight, but Maria was able to make is sound like she was talking about her neighbors.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Seeing the torch for the 1980 Winter Olympics in Athens, the location where they light the torch and the arch to the stadium in Olympia. I carried the name banner for Hungary in the opening/closing ceremonies in Lake Placid, so being where it all begins gave me chills. Loved the music/dancing night. And standing among the ruins atop Monemvasia! And the donkeys in Hydra! And everything!"

For years we traveled in Europe using RS guide books. We knew the tour philosophy and that aspect lived up to expectations. What we did not realize was just how much of a difference a RS guide could make. Maria went way beyond what we imagined a guide would be. The RS back-door approach, combined with a passionate guide turned a tour into a great experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Greece, like other countries, can, and did, provide many "wow" moments for all of us. But, for me the moment came when Maria took us to an impromptu olive oil tasting. Favorite "WOW" moment

"I had many "wow" moments. The Acropolis, Delphi, Kastania, Nafplio, the walk Maria led from Hydra to Plakes Beach. As a solo and independent traveler, I was extremely hesitant about being on a bus and in a tour with 24 other people. Sometimes you can be lonely in a group when you wouldn't be lonely traveling independently. This tour exceeded my expectations! Anastasia was outstanding: knowledgeable, cute and funny. Our group gelled quickly. I was relieved we had a mellow, kind, informed and interested group. There was the right mix of booked and free time. The hotels were great.

"Every day had a wow moment as I was seeing sites that I had learned about in college 40+ years ago, so answering this feels wrong. However, if I have to say, I would say Delphi as it is set in beautiful scenery, as are all the sights, but it was our first outing, and it was the beginning of the spring flowers. To be honest, my most emotional moment came as the plane was close to landing in Athens and I looked down on Greece, the islands, and the sea, and I teared up: finally in Greece!"

It seemed a lot of bus riding, but I don't know how to avoid that. I was disappointed that we did not see the Corinth canal. Admittedly I don't know how difficult it would have been to go there. I could have skipped the cog rail. I found it uncomfortable and long. I would have preferred to have ridden by bus directly to the village at the end of the railway. I found the village and its history fascinating. Overall I thought the tour touched on all the sites of my wonder and imagination

Greece was my 5th Rick Steves tour and it did not disappoint, even after Turkey and Sicily, which I didn't think could be topped (still debating over my favorite). This is not a typical Greece itinerary, as few tours spend so much time on the Peloponnese. I enjoyed it all. I particularly liked Delphi and Mycenae. The swimming in the crystal clear water was great. Our guide, Maria, was very personable and knowledgable. I also enjoyed the company of our companions.

Wow! The tour was really great, Maria gave us great information and was so much fun. I admit that Athens was a huge city that is clearly experiencing economic challenges, but the people were warm and appreciative of our interest in their country and that compensated for some of the big city issues. The museums were wonderful and the historical sites were overwhelming. I did enjoy the countryside and resort visits so much more. Again, the Greek people were wonderfully welcoming and warm.

"Monemvasia was an exceptional location and enjoyed walking along the fortified walls and exploring the winding cobblestoned streets. The artisans were just wonderful."

We had a great time with a wonderful tour guide, bus driver and fellow tourists. Greece is such a beautiful country. I liked the mix of scenery, indoor and outside historical sites, great food and lots of exercise.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I especially enjoyed Monemvasia, and the cooking lesson we had with Renna at Hotel Panorama. My daughter participated in a cooking demonstration helping Renna make baklava that was very entertaining. Renna was so thoughtful that she even made me a special portion of mousaka that was gluten free just for me."

Greece was an unexpected surprise. I had heard that Athens is just a big, dirty city. Once you have seen the Acropolis and a couple of museums, get out of town. While, it is a dirty city, we found much to like there. The people were exceptionally friendly throughout Greece. I was similarly unprepared for the beauty of the countryside. We enjoyed the company of our fellow travelers and loved having the spacious bus accommodations. With all of the negative news that has hit Greece in

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I think seeing the statue of the Charioteer in Delphi and the Statue of Hermes by Praxilates were my biggest WOW moments. Still, the overall trip was a wow. Every day was a new adventure with new sights and people to enjoy. i also enjoyed the cooking demonstration in Monemvasia. Rena made it fun. As one of the "cooks" I had a great time. She made the best mousakka I have ever eaten. She was able to recover my Lumpy Bechamel sauce and make it spectacular."

my undergrad degree was in art so I have been wanted to visit Greece for 40 years ever since I studied the greeks in art history. I knew I wanted to see the acropolis, the partheon, the maidens, the archeological sites, the byzantine churches & I knew I wanted to see the beautiful water. but I was even more amazed at the beauty every place in the country that we went. I really liked the tour since it covered the whole country.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I expected to be wowed by the partheon etc, but it was the country's natural beauty. I did not expect the country to be so mountainous, but it was beautiful. the drive to Delphi & the view in Delphi was spectacular with the beauty of the mountains & the water combo. I loved the trees & streams in the national forest & our lunch there-wow. the water at the seaside calamari lunch was gorgeous with the greens, blues & purples. swimming in the clear blue water of monemvasia."

Terrific! A wonderful balance of organized experiences (museums, monasteries, ancient forts, seaside etc.) and enough free time to make it my trip to Greece, not just what the tour wanted me to see. We learned history, modern culture and the challenges of refugees, international politics and economic troubles. We saw ancient ruins, glorious vistas and art, from very ancient to the modern world. We ate marvelous food and enjoyed welcoming Greek people and fascinating companions on the tour.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Having the opportunity to take some beautiful photographs of a marvelous country and culture. Realizing that all the hotel and restaurant staff and shop keepers spoke adequate English, and some were excellent English speakers. Experiencing sights and places that I could not have arranged on my own and doing it in just 14 days. The acropolis at night from Filopappos Hill, sunset at Kardamyli, sunrise at Monemvasia, dawn arising from behind the Palamidi Fortress. Visit to the Benaki Museum."

Our tour was fantastic. It was the trip of a lifetime. Exploring the ancient sites was something we both had dreamed of from an early age. We were comfortable with our touring companions with in a day. Everything was so well taken care of that we were totally relaxed and worry free. We would happily have continued touring instead of returning home.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Hard to pick only one. I loved sitting in the seaside restaurants outdoors with the cool breezes, beautiful water, and great companions. Trying to learn Greek dances I laughed so hard I almost fell over. I enjoyed sharing my wife's wow moment. For her running in the stadium at Olympia was an experience of a lifetime."

While touring Athens, Delphi, and the Peloponnese we arrived at one captivating area after another. I set out on this journey to explore the historical aspects of Greece: as expected, the Acropolis and Delphi were breathtaking; Olympia and the Byzantine monasteries were spectacular. What I had not expected were the delicious food, the crystal blue waters, the majestic peaks, and the friendly people. My overall experience, then, was far beyond what I had expected.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Standing high on the trail leading to the stadium at Delphi, I looked down on the theatre and the temple ruins. The last rays of sun highlighted the hills behind. Suddenly, I could see it all as it must once have been. I had taught "Ancient Greece" for years but had not previously internalized the depths of their beliefs, the ingenuity of their mathematical reasoning, and the complexity of their social structures. This "aha" moment enriched the rest of the trip."

This is our 6th Rick Steves' tour - all great, but this one was the best! Though these days Greece has become overlooked and avoided--we found nothing but a warm welcome, delicious food, a safe environment, amazing sites, and fabulous climate. We saw not only ancient temples, but Medieval sites, Byzantine churches, and 21st century culture. We enjoyed a wide variety of cuisine. Our guide, local guides, and bus driver were helpful, informative, and concerned for our welfare and experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The ancient and present day town of Monemvasia, built on a Gibraltar-like rock, was an unexpected treat and a WOW moment. We love to walk, and this place gave us a real opportunity to climb through ancient town/fortress ruins. The views of the Aegean from this point were as spectacular as anything we saw anywhere. The town was a beautiful jewel, giving a sense of life hundreds of years ago, and today is a magical place for walking, shopping. eating, and exploring."

From the first moment of the tour to the last we were treated like royalty. All the accommodations were excellent, the food amazing and (extremely!) plentiful. The coach was clean and well appointed, the driver one of the best (and sweetest) we've known. Our guide, Anastasia, was the cherry on the cake of our tour - a bundle of energy, her riveting tales of Greek history beguiled the time in and out of the coach.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My 'WOW' was more of a realization than a particular moment - like standing in front of the Charioteer in Delphi and realizing that the temple of Zeus in Athens was already ANCIENT when this (stunning) 2,490 years old bronze sculpture was created."

I went on a tour in Italy several years ago and that was great. This tour, on the other hand, WAS ABSOLUTELY AND POSITIVELY THE BEST!!!!! I would rate it a 100 on a scale of 1 to 10 - yes, you read that correctly - a 100! Anastasia was brilliant in everything that she did and she did it always with a twinkle in her eye. She loves her country of Greece and relays that love in all her descriptions of history, landscape, people, etc. Greece is an amazing country!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It's so difficult to find one moment but I think that Delphi was the best! It was early on in the tour and was awe inspiring!"

I was in Greece as a student on a summer tour in 1969 it was magical! I wasn't sure if that experience would be diminished or expanded by a return trip. Well, the brisk pace of this tour made me feel young, and maturity definitely brings depth and insight! This tour exceeded my high expectations. I enjoyed the great balance between the historic and current, and loved seeing remote places I wouldn't have seen on my own. The "group life" on this trip was extraordinary, a great group.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were several "wows", but the most moving and profound was at Delphi. It is a powerful place and the" mythos" was palpable--especially at the Omphalos, the navel stone. I was struck by how much of the trajectory of Western Civilization was influenced by the oracles at Dephi. The fates of city states, wars and peace agreements, the storytellers and dramatist. Would there have been a "Golden Age", Thucydides' History, Socrates or the concept of democracy without the sacred temples of Delphi?"

It was my first trip to Europe and I had a wonderful time. Each day was well planned and went smoothly. I felt comfortable with the group and Anastasia not only knew all about Greece but also shared the information with passion and humor. I have to admit I did get a tad burned out on rock ruins in the process of being renewed but all in all I learned a tremendous amount and had fun doing it. The food was wonderful, the Greek people warm and generous and the landscape beautiful. I loved IT!!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Actually, I had no "wow" moment...I found the entire 2 weeks to be informative, fun, and well worth the time and energy."

Pre-Tour Planning

We've put together some specific information on what you should know about this tour before you go. You'll also find more general information about "Getting Ready for Your Tour" on our Tour FAQ.

Trip Resources

Learn more about Greece: Check out a collection of Rick's TV shows, radio interviews, and articles, plus recommended books and movies.

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email. About one month prior to the tour departure, we'll email you directions on how to get from the airport to your first tour hotel, as well as the complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour.

Transportation

Many tour members arrive a day or two before the tour begins — and those who don't, wish they had. This allows you ample time to get over jet lag and make the most of the first few days of the tour.

Athens is a hub for travel in southeastern Europe. For information about flying within Europe, ask your travel agent or check Rick's list of European budget airlines.

Read Rick's train travel and rail pass tips to decide if your travel plans merit a rail pass.

For specific details about traveling in the Greek islands, please see your Greece guidebook and these suggested resources:

If you have additional European travel or tour questions, contact the Tour Department at 425-608-4217 or email tour@ricksteves.com.

Sightseeing on Your Own

If you arrive in Athens before your tour begins, use the Rick Steves Greece guidebook to get oriented. Ride the public transportation, try out a few words of Greek, and get over your jet lag with lots of fresh air and exercise.

Here are a few suggestions for sightseeing in Athens that we do not do as a group: Goulandris Museum of Cycladic & Ancient Greek Art, National Historical Museum, Benaki Museum, Temple of Olympian Zeus, National Gardens.

Packing

Greece is rocky! We recommend you bring a pair of comfortable walking shoes with soles offering good traction, and you may wish to pack a swimsuit, waterproof sandals, and a lightweight microfiber towel.

For more advice on what (and what not!) to pack, see Rick's packing tips.

Special packing note: We use an audioguide system for many of our sightseeing and museum tours. If you wear a hearing aid, we strongly recommend bringing headphones that go over your ears to allow you to fully enjoy these tours.
