Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Greece

We'll gather at our hotel at 6 p.m. for a "Welcome to Athens" group meeting. Then we'll take a neighborhood orientation walk together and get acquainted with one another over dinner.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Athens.

Day 2: Athens' Acropolis

This morning we'll hike to the top of Athens' legendary Acropolis, where we'll take a walking tour of its 2,500-year-old golden-age temples, dominated by the dramatic Parthenon. We'll then work our way down and tour the sleek new Acropolis Museum, custom built to showcase the amazing Parthenon sculptures. Your afternoon and evening are free for exploring Athens' marketplaces — the ancient Agora and the modern Plaka's labyrinth of inviting streets, squares, shops, and cafés.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Athens.

Day 3: Delphi

This morning we'll leave the city behind and drive into the rugged countryside. In a dramatic setting on the flanks of 8,000-foot Mt. Parnassus, we'll enjoy the fresh air and tour the mystical ruins of Delphi. Here, 25 centuries ago, the celebrated oracle allowed mere mortals to converse with the gods. This evening we'll enjoy dinner together.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Delphi.

Day 4: Peloponnese Mountains

Today we'll cross over the Gulf of Corinth to the Peloponnese, where we'll temporarily leave our bus for a steep, scenic cog railway ride up to the historic town of Kalavryta, past the waterfalls and caves lining the narrow Vouraikos Gorge. Just beyond, at a riverside café in the mountain village of Planitero, we'll enjoy a lunch of freshly caught trout and other Greek specialties before our bus takes us to our destination high up in the Menalon Mountains.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Train: 1 hour. Sleep in or near Lagkadia.

Day 5: Ancient Olympia

This morning's winding mountain drive will take us to Olympia, site of the world's first Olympics over 2,700 years ago. There we'll take a vivid walking tour of Olympia's ancient athletic venues, temples, and museum, followed by time for lunch on your own. This afternoon, we’ll stop at an olive mill and enjoy an olive oil tasting, then continue our drive along the sweeping views of the Ionian Sea to a relaxed seaside village on the Mani Peninsula.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep on the Mani Peninsula.

Day 6: Seaside Discoveries

The Mani is an ideal place to enjoy a "vacation from your vacation." After some orientation by your guide, the day is all yours. You might hike along the ancient cobbled paths that wind their way through the nearby hills, or just relax on the beach and end your day with a grilled seafood dinner and a view from the little taverna you've discovered.

Walking light to strenuous: your choice. No bus. Sleep on the Mani Peninsula.

Day 7: Mani Villages

We'll follow the coast to the isolated Mani Peninsula, home to generations-long clan wars, salt-of-the-earth villages, and unique pyrgospita — tower houses. If Greece had a Tombstone and an O.K. Corral, they'd be here. We'll enjoy lunch together, and after making a few off-the-beaten-path discoveries, we'll ride on to the dramatically set medieval town of Monemvasia, where you'll be free for dinner.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in mainland Monemvasia.

Day 8: Medieval Monemvasia

This morning we'll cross the causeway to tackle the massive rock that shoots straight up out of the blue-green Aegean Sea. After an orientation walk around Monemvasia's cozy little Lower Town, you'll have free time to wander more of the romantic walled town or take a swim in the Aegean. Those who want a workout can hike to the very top of the rock. You'll be rewarded with sweeping Aegean views and a chance to explore the ruins of the Upper Town — a living museum of Byzantine, Ottoman, and Venetian history. This evening we'll enjoy a cooking demonstration, followed by dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in mainland Monemvasia.

Day 9: Ancient Nemea

Today we'll head into the heart of the Peloponnese to the ancient town of Nemea, best known for ruins and wine. We'll visit the sacred Temple of Zeus and tour the 4th-century Hellenistic Stadium, once the venue for the Nemean Games. After lunch, we'll visit a family-run winery to learn about the re-emergence of ancient traditions in Greek wines and sample their successes. Then we'll continue north to our destination: the delightful, fortress-topped harbor town of Nafplio, where after an orientation, you'll be free for dinner on your own.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Nafplio.

Day 10: Mycenae and Nafplio

After breakfast we'll take a short drive to mysterious Mycenae, the fortified city founded by Perseus a thousand years before the Parthenon was built. We'll take a walking tour through the grand Lion Gate, along the "cyclopean" walls, and into a remarkably domed tholos tomb. Then we'll return to Nafplio for a free afternoon to explore the colorful alleyways of the Old Town, ride a boat to the little castle island in the harbor, or hike up to enjoy a Venetian fortress view. Tonight we'll regroup for dinner and a traditional music performance.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 1 hour. Sleep in Nafplio.

Day 11: Ancient Epidavros

This morning we'll drive to nearby Epidavros. Once the most famous healing center in the Mediterranean, Epidavros' star attraction today is its ancient theater, large enough to accommodate 14,000. We'll learn about the roots of medicine and drama here, before hopping a boat to the idyllic traffic-free island of Hydra.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Boat: ½ hour. Sleep on Hydra.

Day 12: Island of Hydra

Your entire day is free to soak up the whitewashed architecture as you wander Hydra's narrow streets and harbor promenade. You might swim at a nearby beach, hike across the island, or try to make friends with a donkey. We'll cap our island vacation with a relaxing sunset happy hour.

Walking light to strenuous: your choice. No bus. Sleep on Hydra.

Day 13: Athens' National Archaeological Museum

This morning we'll take a ferry ride to Piraeus, where our bus will be waiting to take us to Athens' impressive National Archaeological Museum, home to amazingly preserved masterpieces in marble, bronze, and gold. Your afternoon is free to wander and shop through the Plaka, or explore other parts of this bustling city. Tonight we'll gaze at the floodlit Acropolis and enjoy a final dinner together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Opa!

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 1 hour. Boat: 2 hours. Sleep in Athens.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. You can easily catch a cab to the airport or to nearby Piraeus, where a fleet of ferries awaits to transport those with time to even more Greek destinations. Antio!

We are longtime fans of Rick Steve’s books! This was our first RS tour. Very impressed with the whole program. Great tour guides and our bus driver George was a magician with all the tiny roads and bridges! Very organized and professional.

I joined the tour with a very minimal knowledge of Greek history and culture. I learned so much while having an amazing time! It was a good balance of sight seeing and relaxing and soaking in the Greek sun on the beach.

The guide, Apostolos, first thing! Excellent. The bus driver, Yani, was also great! The hotels were good, food was good to excellent, and the people were really memorable (in a good way!) The days were challenging and we learned a lot. See Eva's facebook page for pictures and brief blogging

From the first meeting and dinner we were able to immediately bond with our fellow travelers. The itinerary was spaced with enough down time so that the experience did not seem rushed. Bear in mind that this particular tour is very strenuous, and even though I trained for it, there were times when I felt tired. My only criticism is that I would have preferred more experiences with other aspects of the culture rather than seeing ruins 5 days in a row.

Favorite "WOW" moment

The group I was with was amazing. This group went from 14 to 82 with so many people being in their 20 to 30. We were 20 which is smaller but we were a group. On non dinner times we would get together. How much fun it was for the older and younger to connect on a tour such as we had. I realize that your group can't connect like this all the time but it was great.

This was our second Rick Steves tour and we were pleasantly surprised that this experience was as fabulous as our first one (Best of Europe 14 days). Ioanna, our guide, was highly skilled in knowing her content, entertaining us with her knowledge and realife Greek experiences, her ability to read and respond to the group dynamics and her commitment to ensuring we had an experience of a lifetime. It's obvious that Rick Steves carefully vets and trains the guides. Love the intentional planning.

We had a great time on this tour. We have traveled a lot in the Europe in the past but this is the first "bus tour" that we've ever taken. Anastasia, our guide, was wonderful - helpful, knowledgeable, humorous, efficient and thorough. Wish we could have seen more of the North of Greece. I'm sure there are more sites than just ruins that would have been nice to include. We'll likely go back to planning our own trips; this was faster paced and longer days than we like. Would recommend anyway!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Coming up to the top of the Acropolis and seeing the Parthenon was the greatest. We actually visited a few days before the start of the tour, in the evening, after the crowds were gone and on a cooler day. But that site was what I had been looking forward to and it's on the tour. More time to see everything during the your would have been nice, but we had done that already, so we weren't disappointed."

What a wonderful tour to enjoy the beauty of Greece’s mainland, soak up their culture, and experience it all while our amazing guide Anastasia tied it together with fascinating Greek mythology. So many experiences from some incredible hiking, afternoons at the beach and swimming in the sea, to visiting mind blowing ancient ruins! The Parthenon, Olympia and the beehive tomb of Mycenae were my personal favorites. We had a wonderful travel group and we enjoyed each and every person.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I really enjoyed Hydra Island. It had such a relaxed and comfortable ambiance and seemed to showcase the best of Greece. But, I’d have to say my personal “wow “moment was hiking to the very top of the Monemvasia rock with a small group of seven of out travel companions. The views were incredible and the company couldn’t be beat! "

Anastasia was an amazing guide. She drew connections between mythology, greece history, languange and our geographical location as we toured that gave us a much deeper understanding of their interconnectedness. We visited places off the beaten track and local guides provided different perspectives and insights. Hotels were clean and family owned and food was plentiful! Bus and transportation was well done and efficient. All other tour members were lovely and we learned lots from each other.

Every day seemed better than the last. I was thrilled with all the archeological sites we visited, each was so unique. I loved the food and the opportunities to explore with and without the group. This was a well organized experience, that had both depth of information but humor and laughter. I loved all of our guides especially Anastasia and her many meadow stories. Each of the local guides had such passion for the places we toured!

"One morning in Monemvasia I work up before sunrise and walked down to the water's edge. I took photographs of the sunrise twice- once on the right side of the monolithic island, then I walked to the other side of the bridge. It was quiet, only few people were about. I got coffee at a local place and waited another 40 minutes for the sun to rise above the island. Just a good moment. Later that day we hiked to the Hagia Sophia. There was a sense of pilgrimage. "

Probably the best tour guide(Apostolos Douras) and tour we have had in the last few years and we have been on several other tours hosted by competing tour companies. The only 2 that came close was VBT-New Zealand and Tauck-Hawaii. Apostolos provided outstanding historical perspectives on the evolution of Greek Mythology & the Greek Culture while ensuring all events & activities were issue free. Another amazing Rick Steves tour! All our guides at the various sites were excellent, and our group especially enjoyed our main guide, Lorenza. As advertised, this was a very active tour, and rocky paths and slippery stones on the hikes to sites called for caution and good shoes. Scenery, sites, and museums were amazing.

I really enjoyed the tour of Greece but some of the older friends on our tour struggled physically with all of the high steps and the climbing. The rocks are shiny and very slippery. You really need to have a pair of shoes with excellent tread and grip so you don’t slip. Several people didn’t have the right shoes and it was difficult for them. I think it needs to be spelled out more about the steps and rocks being so slippery. Many of our tour friends did not feel safe on them.

We loved this tour! In addition to having the best tour guide, Ioanna, we had a fantastic group of fellow travelers. The people of Greece were so welcoming and we felt that at every stop along the tour. We enjoyed the energy of Athens as well as the serenity of the smaller towns and learned so much about the history and culture of Greece. Ioanna’s knowledge and love of Greek Ancient history, Greek Mythology and the culture of her country was infectious.

This was my sister and my third RS tour together, our first two being in Italy. Since I’m 69 and 16 years older, I wanted to do another high energy tour while I could. This one was perfect. High energy, great sights, perfect narrations and enough down time to reenergize us for the nest day! Our guide, Ioanna is a gem! She was so pleasant, informative, personable and above all, compassionate! We each felt like the tour was uniquely designed for us as she guided us thru her beautiful country!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My personal “Wow!” moment was when my sister and I visited the island of Monemvasia. After our guided tour of the lower and then upper “towns” those who wanted to could hike to the top of the island. At the age of 69, with my sister being 16 years younger, I gave it a go. These were not paved paths, but many times a navigation of rocky, and natural gravel and dirt paths. The view from the top was amazing. Especially when we got back to our hotel with a beautiful view back to my accomplishment!"

This was my first RS tour and it did not disappoint. Our group was manageable in size and our tour guide/driver were the perfect hosts. The convenience of having everything from meals to transportation to exhibit tickets made the tour extremely pleasurable for me. I was surprised by and grateful for the amount of “free” time we were given. The lodging was good, but in certain places the beds were very hard. Lastly, the food was delicious and bountiful.

The food was good (the farewell dinner in Athens may have been the best meal we have ever had), our travel mates were fun and inclusive, and the weather (mostly) ideal for traveling. A wonderful trip!

Our visit to Greece was everything we had envisioned. Our group of travelers were fun, inviting and respectful of everyone in the group. Lorenza was the perfect guide for our trip. Everything was well coordinated and the itinerary included some very nice surprises (Greek coffee experience, Olive oil making, for example) that wesimply wouldn't think of, or know where to look had we planned ourselves.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I'm not sure we can narrow it down to 1 "wow" moment. Our visits to Delphi and Olympia were more that we had expected. If I had to pick it might be our trek through Monemvasia - the "wow" might relate to making it to the top! Athens was amazing and its hard to top standing on the Acropolis and absorbing the history of the Parthenon and walking through the Plaka. We loved every minute of the trip but we were exhausted by the end of our stay. "

Our guide Lorenza was fantastic. She is very experienced in taking tours through Greece and is very knowledgeable of the history, features, culture, people, etc. When I left a coat behind at a hotel she jumped to help, called the hotel, and arranged shipment to our next hotel. Our guide Angelos and the local guides were very knowledgeable and helped to give context to the many sites and locations that we visited in Greece. There should be a disclaimer regarding the activity of this tour. This one is number 7 for me, and I have never been taxed as much with navigating horrendously slippery marble/granite stairs worn smooth by millennia of travelers. This was the most physically taxing tour of all. Your travelers should know so. This is beyond the miles per day, but the irregularity of cobbled, stone, dirt, "stairs" and paths where you have to monitor every footfall lest you face plant. Thankfully, it never rained.

My friend and I walked the town, visited the cemetery, bought a huge ripe tomato and walked back to the seaside hotel. We dined al fresco on our patio, enjoying leftover taverna dinner, tomato, and cookies. Yes, Olympia, Delphi, Athens, Hydrae were wonderful but we LOVED this hotel!"

I would have to start with the Tour Guide, Apostolos. His continual efforts in keeping the quality of the Tour at a highest level, from day one to the last day, made this trip both exciting and informative of the Greek culture and history. He was continually offering little surprises of some of the most exceptional Greek pastries and other treats. He also, after hearing of the group's interest in Greek dance gave a small lesson one evening. These are a couple of examples of going beyond expectat

I'm sort of an outlier and don't like group guided tours. My wife and I have been to Europe about twenty or so times. Most of those trips we make our own transportation and accommodations. While my wife liked this tour I was put off by the constant guide narratives and herding on and off busses and around museums. I turned off my receiver during site and museum visits so I could read the displays at my own pace and interest and not be brow beat by the guides. I'm an artist and landscape architec

Great leaders for our trip! They were both very knowlegeable and entertaining. I felt a bit lost coming in to Athens by myself the Sunday before the tour start day and was afraid to venture out from my hotel, but I used the guidebook to force myself to go to the Central Market and have a cup of the traditional coffee at Mokka per your sugestion. In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in your tour account. About one month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour in your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements and transfers are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly in and out of Athens (ATH).

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, or traveling to the Greek Islands, see your Rick Steves Greece guidebook.
