Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Greece

At 6 p.m. we'll meet at our hotel for a "Welcome to Athens" meeting. Then we'll get oriented to our neighborhood and walk to a nearby restaurant where we can get acquainted over dinner. Sleep in Athens (2 nights). No bus. Walking: light.

Day 2: Athens' Acropolis

This morning we'll hike to the top of Athens' legendary Acropolis, where we'll take a walking tour of its 2,500-year-old Golden Age temples, dominated by the dramatic Parthenon. We'll then work our way down and tour the sleek new Acropolis Museum, custom built to showcase the amazing Parthenon sculptures. Your afternoon and evening are free for exploring Athens' marketplaces — the ancient Agora and the modern Plaka's labyrinth of inviting streets, squares, shops, and cafés. No bus. Walking: strenuous.

Day 3: Greek Treasures and Delphi

This morning we'll leave the city behind and drive into the rugged countryside. In a dramatic setting on the flanks of 8,000-foot Mt. Parnassus we'll enjoy the fresh air and tour the mystical ruins of Delphi. Here, 25 centuries ago, the celebrated oracle allowed mere mortals to converse with the gods. This evening we'll have dinner together and sleep in the town of Delphi (1 night). Bus: 4 hours. Walking: strenuous.

Day 4: Peloponnese Mountains

Today we'll cross over the Gulf of Corinth to the Peloponnese, where we'll take a scenic drive up to the historic, mountain town of Kalavryta. Now a popular ski resort and weekend getaway for Athenians, duting World War II Kalavryta was burned to the ground by the German occupying forces. Just beyond at a riverside café in the mountain village of Planitero, we'll enjoy a lunch of freshly caught trout and other Greek specialties before our bus takes us to our destination high up in the Menalon Mountains. Tonight we'll enjoy dinner together. Sleep in or near Lagkadia (1 night). Train: 1 hour. Bus: 5 hours. Walking: light.

Day 5: Ancient Olympia

This morning's winding mountain drive will take us to Olympia, site of the world's first Olympics, over 2,700 years ago. There we'll take a vivid walking tour of Olympia's ancient athletic venues, temples, and museum, followed by lunch together. This afternoon's drive will take us along sweeping views of the Ionian Sea to a relaxed seaside village on the Mani Peninsula, where we'll sleep (2 nights). Bus: 5 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 6: Seaside Vacation

The Mani is an ideal place to enjoy a "vacation from your vacation." After some orientation by your guide, the day is all yours. You might hike along the ancient cobbled paths that wind their way through the nearby hills — or just relax on the beach — and end your day with a grilled seafood dinner and a view from the little taverna you've discovered. No bus. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 7: Mani Villages

We'll follow the coast to the isolated Mani Peninsula, home to generations-long clan wars, salt-of-the-earth villages, and unique pyrgospita — tower houses. If Greece had a Tombstone and an O.K. Corral, here is where they'd be. We'll enjoy lunch together, and after making a few off-the-beaten-path discoveries, we'll ride on to the dramatically set medieval town of Monemvasia, where you'll be free for dinner. Sleep in mainland Monemvasia (2 nights). Bus: 5 hours. Walking: light.

Day 8: Medieval Monemvasia

This morning we'll cross the causeway to tackle the massive rock that shoots straight up out of the blue-green Aegean Sea. After an orientation walk around Monemvasia's cozy little Lower Town, you'll have free time to wander more of the romantic walled town or take a swim in the Aegean. Those who want a workout can hike to the very top of the rock. You will be rewarded with sweeping Aegean views and a chance to explore the ruins of the Upper Town — a living museum of Byzantine, Ottoman, and Venetian history. This evening we'll enjoy a cooking demonstration, followed by dinner together. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 9: Byzantine Mystras

Today we'll head up into the heart of the Peloponnese, where we'll tour the haunting ruins of the fortress town of Mystras and its still-standing group of Byzantine churches. After stopping in nearby Sparta for lunch, we'll continue north to our destination: the delightful, fortress-topped harbor town of Nafplio. We'll enjoy a Greek wine and ouzo tasting, and sleep in Nafplio (2 nights). Bus: 5 hours. Walking: strenuous.

Day 10: Mycenae and Nafplio

After breakfast we'll take a short drive to mysterious Mycenae, the fortified city founded by Perseus a thousand years before the Parthenon was built. We'll take a walking tour through the grand Lion Gate, along the "cyclopean" walls, and into a remarkably domed tholos tomb. Then we'll return to Nafplio for a free afternoon to explore the colorful alleyways of the Old Town, ride a boat to the little castle island in the harbor, or hike up to enjoy a Venetian fortress view. We'll regroup for dinner and music together this evening. Bus: 1 hour. Walking: moderate.

Day 11: Ancient Epidavros

This morning we'll drive to nearby Epidavros. Once the most famous healing center in the Mediterranean, today's star attraction is its ancient theater, large enough to accommodate 14,000. We'll learn about the roots of medicine and drama here, before hopping a boat to the idyllic traffic-free island of Hydra, where we'll sleep (2 nights). Boat: ½ hour. Bus: 2 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 12: Island of Hydra

Your entire day is free to soak up the whitewashed architecture as you wander Hydra's narrow streets and harbor promenade. You might swim at a nearby beach, hike across the island, or try to make friends with a donkey. We will cap our island vacation with a relaxing sunset happy hour. No bus. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 13: Return to Athens and National Archaeological Museum

This morning we'll take a ferry ride to Piraeus, where our bus will be waiting to take us to Athens' impressive National Archaeological Museum, home to amazingly preserved masterpieces in marble, bronze, and gold. Your afternoon is free to wander and shop through the Plaka, or explore other parts of this bustling city. Tonight we'll gaze at the floodlit Acropolis and enjoy a final dinner together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Opa! Sleep in Athens (1 night). Boat: 2 hours. Bus: 1 hour. Walking: light.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. You can easily catch a cab for the airport, or to nearby Piraeus where a fleet of ferries awaits to transport those with time to even more Greek destinations. Antio!

This was my first Rick Steves' Tour and it was amazing. My husband and I have only been traveling the past four years and we have enjoyed arranging the trips using your books so we were unsure if we would like a tour. Now I cannot imagine not joining another one your tours. I loved the variety--large city, small towns, and the different types of food representing each area. Apostolos and our local guides were so full of interesting facts and stories and our 23 traveling buddies added to the fun

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The food fabulous. I did not know what to expect, but I loved the freshness and variety. I appreciate the time it must take to planning such consistently great meals. Although I always thought there was too much food, I learned to try everything, but in smaller amounts."

This is our fifth Rick Steves tour, and we've enjoyed all of them. This tour, however, just had the right combination of great guide, great scenery, great culture and history, great food, and great tour group that made it a very special trip. We loved every aspect, from the excitement and amazing history of Athens to the charming and relaxing seaside villages. We learned so much about ancient and modern Greece on this trip, all the while enjoying the beautiful scenery and delicious food.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Visiting Ancient Olympia and actually running on the same race track that athletes competed on thousands of years ago -- and realizing that the tradition of today's Olympic Games began here by an ancient civilization."

I had high expectations going into this tour, not only from my desire to visit Greece, but also from what I had heard from other RS travelers who had done this tour. I can just say this tour exceeded those expectations. Apostolos is a phenomenal guide who seems to really care that the guests in his country receive the ultimate experience. It is great to feel well taken care of but not smothered or "herded",and with ample time on our own to really enjoy our stays in various areas.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Maybe it was when we stopped at a remote mountain restaurant by a small stream and had fresh grilled trout on the terrace. While we were sitting there a herd of sheep and goats came trotting past herded by huge white dogs and followed by a shepherd leading a donkey with a little boy on top. Perfect!"

I thought the tour guide was outstanding. He was personable, witty and maintained a professional demeanor at all times. He was well organized and on time every day. He provided information and personal experiences to stimulate your perceptions of Greece. We visited with locals that he knew that gave us a sense of what Greece was like fifty years ago. The national elections were taking place and he explained the system and how it is different from our elections. I can't say enough about Apost

"There were many "wow" moments during the tour. Apostolos made sure that everyone had the best time. The group dynamics were very good....people talked to everyone and i felt very comfortable. Our arrival at different landmarks was timed to be most beneficial to the group. Our meeting with one of his acquaintances in his backyard was very heartwarming and made the trip very special. Apostolos is a gem...."

Great trip. The usual excellence we've come to expect from A Rick Steves tour. As is always the case, the excellence of the tour leader is what set this apart. Our tour members repeatedly reaped the benefits of Apostolos' knack for building and maintaining relationships with people. The people he introduced us to enabled us to connect with the area in a way that we never would have otherwise.

We loved Greece!! We were thrilled to go to so many "off the beaten track" places. We met some wonderful new friends. The tour itself did not disappoint in any way but requests for help in planning our additional two days around Athens were futile. I wish that there was a guidebook either written or recommended that covered other places to visit outside the tour.

Another great Rick Steve's tour. Greece was a fascinating place to visit, and in true Rick Steve's style this "back door" approach will show you the real Greece (not just the tourist infested sites). Second key ingredient for a great tour is a great guide, and Filippos was outstanding. Everything went off without a hitch, he was a wealth of information, and oozes the spirit and vitality of the Greek people -- his determination for us to experience that really made the trip great.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Hard not to be wowed by walking around 2,000 to 3,000 old ruins at a number of stops along the way and can't forget the many breathtaking views from on high all along the route. But really cherished some of the simpler moments like eating lunch at a beautiful beach-side cafe in Kardamili, strolling the streets of Nafplio watching the Greek families enjoy their weekend in the city square, and the perfect end to the trip relaxing on a quiet beach in Hydra under a thatched umbrella."

My husband and I are very busy with our demanding careers. We love traveling together, but we don't have time to plan the details of an international travel trip. This was our third Rick Steve's tour. We keep coming back because the experience is seamless and we are never disappointed. This tour, however, has a special place in our hearts. It was really so amazing because our guide, Filippos, took extra care to ensure an outstanding vacation. This was truly a 5 star experience.

"This is a really hard question to answer. There were many "wow" moments. Greece had so much amazing scenery and topography. We were so surprised to discover the neat town of Monemvasia. What looks like a giant rock on an island contains a charming medieval town and a scenic hike to the top of the rock offers amazing ruins of a old fortified town. The food was amazing - each meal was so fresh and delicious. We also loved the cooking class at our delightful hotel in Monemvasia."

The tour was well organized, just the right level of activities and free time. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and flexible when the a mudslide change our plans. The tone of the trip was set from the 1st meeting. Have been to Europe 7 times and have used 3 other tour groups. This was the best by far - I am looking forward to taking more RS tours.

"The night of traditional music and dancing that the tour guide was able to arrange because we asked about it. It was fun to see our fellow guests join in an have a marvelous time. Fillippos was fantastic which enhanced the overall tour experience. I was also lucky to tour with a great group of people. I enjoyed all of the stops on the tour. There is quite a bit of bus time but it was always broken up in 1 1/2 increments which made the time go by. Plus, Greece is a beautiful country and I was happy to listen to my audio book and stare out the window at the countryside.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Fillipos had been playing Greek folk music in the bus after lunch. I was teasing him that he should show us some Greek dances. On the night we had Greek musicians, Fillipos arranged for Greek dancers. They performed and taught us some of the dances. I love to dance and this was definitely a highlight for me."

Food also very good at all locations. As usual, tour companions very simpatico. No grumps, only smart, interesting folks wanting to experience Greece, its history and culture. We explored a spectacularly beautiful portion of Greece from urban centers to remote rocky seashore and alpine forests with all the hillside villages and farms in between. Athens was fascinating, rich with sites reflecting its long and important history. Our tour was more comprehensive than I had imagined and there was not one day that didn't hold an unexpected surprise. An overall wonderful experience.

I have been on two My-Way tours and enjoyed them both tremendously. However, I had reservations about a tour. Visions of pennant waving guides rushing harried participants from one site or picture to another. I should have known better with one of your tours. Our Greece tour was carefully choreographed to give the broadest range of experiences: urban, rural, countryside, oceanside. It was a breathtaking sweep of a large part of Greece. Personal time at each site was much appreciated.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Everything had a wow component but here a few of my favorites. The mountains/forests of the northern Peloponnese. The richness of Greek art/architecture. The isolated monasteries(Osios Lukas) The people: warm, ebullient, resolute. The food: fresh, flavorful. From home-cooking to urban-sophisticated it was happy bites. Lastly, but certainly not least, our bus-drivers skill in negotiating hair-pin turns, switch-backs and hair-raising traffic. Bravo!"

"A trip of a lifetime!" People talk about this kind of experience and never realize it - but we did! The packaging of sights, travel, hotel, food and trip guide was beyond our expectations in each area. We have traveled a bit in Europe but not on an organized trip like the Rick Steve's Greece trip. The Greece Tour was my third Rick Steves Tour. My first tour was Spain, and my second was the 21 day Best of Europe Tour. Got an entirely new mind picture of the geography of Greece--all one sees in the movies is islands and blue water: these were present, in abundance, but account for only a small part of the whole country. Loved the mountains, the mountain villages, the WWII resistance... but was saddened by the fact that said villages are apparently for the most part deserted. Something wrong there.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Easily it was on the second floor of the Acropolis museum--walking around a corner and there, right in front of me, is Kritios Boy. No pomp, no circumstance; just there. Something akin would be finding the Mona Lisa just hanging on a wall in some nondescript room of the Louvre."

We loved this tour! It was our 3rd tour so we kind of knew what to expect, but it was so much more! Loved our guide Danae, loved our tour mates, and LOVED Greece! Going to the Peloponnese Peninsula you see a lot of Greece that I think most people skip, and that is a huge mistake on their part but a huge bonus for us because it really wasn't too crowded. There were of course a few places that were busy but we always got there early and beat the crowds. Overall a 10!

This tour is a well-curated blend of world class ancient sites and museums that are the heritage of every culture touched by the Greeks over millennia. As an added bonus, mountain, island and coastal villages offer jaw-dropping vistas, great food and pleasant relaxation. Our guide Danae delighted us with well-told tales of ancient and current times, outstanding hospitality and true concern for our well-fare. I wish I had done this tour years ago so I could return again and again.

Once again I was impressed with the ease of transition from one beautiful location to another. The bus was top notch, George the bus driver was exceptionally skilled, and Colin, our guide was fantastic. Greece surprised me with how mountainous the terrain was in the Peloponnese. Stunningly beautiful! Surrounded by olive groves, orange groves and the blue, blue water, I fell in love with the country. The people are so friendly and accommodating.

Wonderful tour!! It could not have been better, thanks to the best guide possible: Apostolos. He made the tour the trip of a lifetime. The itinerary and execution were flawless. "My wow moment was simply a gradual realization of how the many generations of ancient peoples who inhabited this corner of our planet mined stone from the ground to build huge fortresses both for defense and to wage war, but simultaneously used the same stone to create some of the best art the world has ever seen. Terrific experience with a great lead guide (Filippos), a convivial and experienced group of travelers and excellent accomodations. We have vacationed in Europe many times, all on our own. This was our first ever tour. Consequently, we were a little apprehensive. Our apprehensions were totally unfounded. We have been on two previous RS My Way Tours (Italy in 2015 and Spain in 2016). This was our first "fully guided" tour with you. Our Guide, Ioanna was outstanding. I cannot overstate was a joy and beautiful experience she gave us all. The guides at all the archeological sites were fantastic, the schedules around May 1 closures were great. Traveling to Greece has been my dream for as long as I can remember. I've loved Greek mythology since I was small and studied Greek and Roman mythology in college as well. Loved this tour! In my opinion there are 3 things that make a tour great. Exceptional choice of sites. Excellent and knowledgeable guides, and congenial, non judgmental, and open minded tour members. This was our 13th RS tour and ranks up there with the best of them. The balance of well-organized activities coupled with free time was just right. Also, because of unanticipated schedule changes due to Easter (and Easter week), the tour was superbly handled (with everything still getting done). Highly enjoyable immersion into Greek history and current culture. Excellent mix of museums, churches, rural and urban art & engineering marvels. Personal exploration of ancient mythological and historic sites. Invigorating outdoor exercise in gorgeous mountain and sea environments. Spring wild flowers galore. Healthful, delicious Greek cuisine. Fascinating evenings with traditional olive grower Ioannis Dimitraeus and other local experts. Guided reliably with wit and gentility of Colin Clement.

"Above the donkey paths of Lower Town, navigate the slick stone switchbacks. Up! Turn the corner at Hagia Sophia. Up! Byzantine structure gives way to wild botany. Up! The Rock presents, directly to the sun, timeless beauty. Chartreuse euphorbia, red poppy, lemon Compositae, magenta thistle, white mignonet. Oblivious to the blue Aegean 100 meters down, riotous growth competes to green every inch between the ancient rocks. Fragrant airy Spring in Monemvasia!"

Based on two prior RS tours, I expected a great experience, and that is what I got. I really enjoyed the two weeks, and came away with a much better understanding of Greece – the people, the history, and the geography. Colin was a great guide, and I appreciated his expertise and his obvious affection for the Greek people. I was especially impressed that he could take the curveballs of Greek Easter week and May Day and work around (and through) them in ways that seemed seamless and added to the whole experience.

Greece is a delightful country. I like the focus of this trip and I learned a lot. Everyone asked me if I was going to the islands so wasn't sure I had made the right choice, but I have high praise for the agenda. The various attributes of your trips were consistent in this trip: balance of learning and free time. Getting to know locals through the contacts you have developed. Use of expert local guides is very value added.

Greece is SO much more than I expected! Every day was was "the best day" as we traveled through the country. I soon realized how little I knew about Greece, its history, and its people. Thanks to Colin, our guide, we had some unique experiences...always enhanced by his humor (humour) and wisdom. This was my eighth Rick Steves tour--I can't believe I waited so long to "discover" Greece! Now, how about a RS tour of northern Greece? (Hint, hint...)

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Celebrating Orthodox Easter - Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday in two villages - was unexpectedly poignant, exciting and communal. In Kardamyli, Good Friday, we processed with townsfolk by candlelight through the streets behind the Effigy of Christ. On Saturday night, we gathered in the church square to wait for midnight when the light of the risen Christ was shared - candle by candle and we carefully walked back to our hotel with candles burning. Then, Easter lunch in Kastania!"

Once again, this was a great Rick Steves tour. The tour guide, Colin, was very knowledgable about the country and very passionate about Greece and its people. His job was made more challenging because the Orthodox Easter holiday and May Day occurred during the tour. Colin was very resourceful and used his many contacts in the country to pull off the itinerary changes without a hitch. All of the local guides were great storytellers and really brought the history home to us.

The tour was excellent! The hotels were lovely, always in town and usually family owned. Our guide Colin was amazing!! He brought Greece, it's history and politics into focus and introduced us to Athens as well as many small towns across the country. The culture, food and people were all marvelous. Our bus driver and the local guides were excellent and helped bring Greece alive. The tour group was great, as they always are, and we made lots of new friends!

"There were a couple of wow moments - spending Easter Holy Week in Greece was incredible. We participated in the parades and candle lighting at midnight on Holy Saturday. And our wonderful guide Colin arranged for us to have a wonderful home cooked Easter meal in Kastania. Favorite "WOW" moment

"Many memorable moments, but I would have to say the cave tour. Spectacular. It was nice to be immersed in the Greek Orthodox Easter. Had not thought about this before we booked our tour. Apostolos was an exceptional guide. The tour was filled with cultural experiences and in-depth knowledge of the antiquities. It included a variety of foods for us to experience. There was just enough free time for exploring on our own. We had surprises ( Easter festivities) that added to our cultural experience and provided for some laughter and bonding with our fellow travelers.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"This is harder to answer because everyday had its own wow experience. I really enjoyed the caves we viewed, Apostolos arranged for us to visit when the cog train ride became unavailable. As I have already mentioned, participating in some of the Greek Easter and learning their customs provided for an in-depth experience, that I would not have gotten had I toured on my own. It's been fun and educational. Good balance of touring and time on your own. Our guide, Apostolos, was outstanding, and our driver, Christos, was wonderful on the twisty roads in the countryside as well as the busy roads of Athens. Lots of walking and climbing on this itinerary to fully experience the tour, which we expected, but seemed beyond capabilities of some tour members.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Monemvasia was such an unexpected sight, a monolith just off the mainland. It reminded me of Gibraltar, but with an upper town (mostly ruins) built on top, a bustling lower town at the base of the rock, and a new town across the bridge. In the hotel Panorama, we had a Greek cooking demonstration in which six of our tour members helped prepare the dish for our later consumption, and it seemed to solidify the group with a very fun experience in the shadow of Monemvasia."

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The participation in the celebration of Good Friday and Easter in Greece. This was my third Rick Steves tour. We were so lucky to be on tour in Greece with Apostolos during Holy Week! A lot was packed into 2 weeks, yet we had slack time for our own exploits. Fillipos, our guide, was excellent, as were the driver and local guides. By seeing the historic sites and museums, and getting data from guides and the guidebook, I increased my comprehension of and appreciation for the lengthy history of the Greeks and their effect on the evolution of western civilization. The Greeks were helpful and friendly. The quiet beauty of the island of Hydra was a nice cap on the tour.

This tour was overall more relaxing than our previous two, which was great given I just got diagnosed with arthritis in my toe and it was giving me problems the entire trip. There were enough light days to recover my toe a bit for the more strenuous days. This was my third visit to Europe, but the first "tour" - anywhere. In the past I've rented a car and charted my own route (with input from Rick Steve's books). I had doubts about traveling with a group, but it was the preferred option for my travel companion. All doubts have been erased, at least as far as Rick Steves tours are concerned. Everythng was so well organized and thoughtfully arranged.

It was a fascinating experience. I'm glad that we did the guided tour instead of just going it on our own like we usually do. There is so much information that just reading it out of a book doesn't do it justice. Ioanna did an outstanding job explaining what we were seeing, along with the history of the various sites. I was somewhat concerned about the strenuous hiking and climbing that was promised, but it turned out to be not so bad after all. I survived!

This was our 7th RS Tour...an exceptional experience! The tour experiences for us are always set by the guide...our guide Danae was an excellent guide along with being warm and caring individual. Having never been to Greece before we were not sure how we'd enjoy it but from the opening welcome meeting to our farewell dinner with our traveling tour members we enjoyed each unique and interesting experience...and Greece has a lot to share. There was a lot of variety to this tour which we appreciate

"This tour and how it was organized provides numerous "wow" experiences...Olympia...site of the first Olympics,WOW! The Mani Peninsula and the Greek Country side/coast line was beautiful. The Island of Hydra was a very special experience...one we'd like to repeat. I'd have to say the people of Greece we meet was the unexpected WOW. We were fortunate to tour Greece with the Country in full bloom with wildflowers everywhere. This Greece tour qualifies for a WOW!"

Greece exceeded my expectations! From Athens to the island of Hydra each destination was unique to its area. I loved the quaint mountain villages and seaside towns! From a cultural and historical perspective, Athens, Delphi and Olympia were amazing! I was extremely impressed with the beehive tombs in Mykines and the Lions' Gate in Mycenae. In addition, the sanctuary of Asklepios and the theater were exceptional.

The tour was a good over all exposure to the mainland of Greece. Our guide was very knowledgeable and the local guides added a lot to the experience. The food and wine were great and the different settings (outside, seaside, inside) made each meal interesting. A real plus was the new Acropolis Museum and the additional time to spend there was much appreciated.

Heart of Greece exceeded my expectations. Our guide, Danea, made a great tour even better with her knowledge, personality, care for the group and love of Greece! For me, she made the experience the best yet. Our group within days was like traveling with lifelong friends. Everyone got along! The balance between tour and unstructured time was perfect. Recommends for activities and dinning options were spot on and the HERA hotel made our post trip adventures easy with transfers.

"The island of HYDRA. A vacation within a tour. Long hikes, beautiful sunsets, seaside dinning, fun shops, and a slice of Greece seen by few travelers. But how can you not include visiting the sites were western civilization was born. This is a must tour on your Rick Steves list!"

What an interesting trip! It's difficult to convey how wonderful the whole experience was. Our group was full of interesting and intelligent people. The tour itself hit all the important historical places, at least as far as the Classical world was involved, but it also provided plenty of local color and more contemporary history. I also think the perfect balance was struck between time on tours and time on our own. I had time to see almost everything I wanted to see, but which wasn't formally included on the tour.

"I am an ancient history buff, so the whole trip was a "wow" moment for me, but two events stood out. One was going the Agora in Athens and seeing where Socrates, Plato and Aristotle were familiar faces. The second was standing beneath the Lion Gate at Mycenae. I have seen pictures of the place for fifty years, and, I finally arrived in person at a structure that was erected thirty-five hundred years ago, and was the putative home of Atreus and Agamemnon."

Apostolos was born to be a tour guide in Greece. He was so sincere , kind knowledgeable & humorous. He was so enthusiastic about his country & its people. He treated the elderly locals with tremendous respect. In turn, we got more insight into the lives of real people in Greece. He was the glue that held us together. How can you go wrong with " the Apostle " as your guide. We were also protected by Christos " the Christ" , as our driver. He had amazing skill in handling the narrow, winding roads.

It was a marvelous tour! The itinerary was full--and we grumbled about leaving a few places too soon--but we understood that this was an ambitious tour, with an agenda that would literally cover a lot of territory. It was better than the description, actually, with outstanding guides at the Acropolis, Delphi, Mystras, and Mycenae. I relearned a lot about mythology, as well as the famous sites. It was a gigantic time-travel experience. I loved our fellow travelers--interesting people everyone.

"It wasn't a moment as much as a realization. Time is skewed by the BC/AD construct. This could be 6019, as opposed to 2019. This was our fifth Rick Steves' tour with outstanding guides, but being an outstanding guide when complications arise is what I saw in David. We were ready to cross the bridge over the Gulf of Corinth when we discovered that the bridge was closed. David sought information and the best outcome for all of us. This tour rates at the top of the 8 RS tours I have taken. The group was congenial, engaged, and a pleasure to be around. Our guide was outstanding. Arriving at the bridge over the Gulf of Corinth to find it closed (for hours) would have been very stressful if we had been traveling independently. But David was in touch with people to find out what was happening, and to come up with an acceptable plan b when we had to jettison our day's itinerary. Additionally, the food was a highlight!

"My WOW was Agamemnon's Tomb. How a structure such as that could stand over 3000 years intact is totally amazing to me. However, Monemvasia, in its entirety, is as much a Kodak moment as anywhere I have been. Of course, Hydra could not have been more beautiful."

I really can't say enough about how great this tour was! Our tour group was fun, everywhere we went we were welcomed, the food and drink was great, and history and culture were everywhere! Every local we came across when away from the group was friendly and helpful. Greece is a beautiful country with its mountainous interior and clear blue shorelines. I look forward to returning someday and would certainly take an additional tour if offered for the northern areas!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were several, seeing the Acropolis for the first time, standing on Mars Hill, standing in the very first Olympic game stadium, but my favorite was visiting Hydra! The Greece tour was excellent and our guide David was outstanding. The reason I cannot say the whole trip was outstanding was that the hotel Esperides or the hotel Vardia (I'm not sure of the name of the one I stayed in) had no hot water and there was no soap in the bathrooms. One of the things we love about traveling with RS is that we Stan in downtown hotels and small towns with "funky" hotels but no hot water is not up to the RS experience.

Excellent from beginning to end. I will be assimilating history, mythology, imagery, landscapes, seascapes, museums, food, music, dance, camaraderie, for a while. This journey surpassed my expectations. It was a great introduction to Greek culture as it currently exists and ancient Greek culture. Every new setting has its own stories and people and culture, the Mani is different from Athens, Napflio is different from Hydra and Monemvasia. We moved along at a fast clip but got a flavor of each.

Favorite "WOW" moment

From Napflio we visited Mycenae, which housed the mysterious beehive tomb of Agamemnon, filled with drone bees during our springtime visit, which added to the sense of awe. I have been looking forward to going to Greece for years. To walk the streets of the great philosophers and to stand on top of the Acropolis sent a chill up and down my spine. The trip was wonderful from start to near the finish. The weather on the last three days was rather miserable. Unfortunately, the tour of Epidavros was accompanied by rain, wind, and mud. "On a beautiful Sunday morning we were at the archaeological Site of Mystras. Our local guide George was explaining the frescoes of an Ancient Greek Orthodox Church. We were in a small doomed room with sun beaming in on us thru a tiny window. Suddenly, he began to sing the Hymn of the Angels, Holy Holy Holy. I will always remember his incredible voice and acoustics of this very magical and spiritual moment."

Ioanna was a wonderful tour guide. She knew so much Greek history and culture. I really felt like my knowledge was expanded. It seemed like a short Course in Greek History. Ioanna was so warm and welcoming to everyone on the tour. The local tour guides were also well informed and again I learn so much About Ancient Greece. A Great Tour!!!!

My wife and I both agree that this tour was excellent and couldn't have been any better due in part to our guide Ioanna. She was not only knowledgable but gave the tour a very personal touch. She knew so many people along the way, and loved to have fun. We thank her for her friendship which made our tour a real joy

It was truly beyond what I expected. Ioanna was THE BEST. She was obviously working her tail off to make this a smooth trip and provide a wealth of information as we traveled through Greece, yet she did so with such energy and ease. I feel like the pace was good- on the go but enough free time to relax. A great balance of museums and outside visiting sites. I especially liked the feel that we were not just doing touristy stuff, but meeting the "real" people.

This tour was a great mix of seaside and mountain scenery, ancient ruins, world class museums, and both big city and rural Greece. I appreciated the Byzantine sites (especially Mystras and Kastania) as a complement to the ancient sites. The itinerary's inclusion of the Mani Peninsula, Monemvasia and Nafplio provides a greater depth of understanding of all of Greece's history, and the addition of the Rembetiko music mezze dinner was a great way to provide insight to more contemporary Greece.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Fillipos is a great guide, very accessible and a good communicator. The local guides were all excellent, some of the best I have ever met on ETBD tours. The lunches, especially the trout farm and the seafood lunch in Limeni, and the Rembetiko dinner were excellent both in terms of food but also as experiences. RS should consider adding a northern Greece tour (Meteora, the Royal Macedonian Tombs at Vergina, Thessaloniki, and maybe Corfu). Many Greece tour alums would love to see more of Greece."

This is our fourth Rick Steves tour that my husband and I have experienced (three regular tours, one a "My Way" tour). And I have to say, it was my favorite. Making our debut in Greece, I couldn't think of a better way to truly "see" this country [INVALID] not only was the 14-day itinerary the ideal overview, but we had an absolutely charming guide in Fillippos. Nice hotels, top bus driver and no shortage of delicious Greek cuisine.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It was our 1st day in Athens, two days before the start of the tour. After a long flight from Seattle, we arrived at our RS hotel at 10:30PM. The front desk clerk informed us that the rooftop resto/bar was still open, and after stashing our bags in our room, we made our way to the top. As I walked along the outside deck, I looked out into the dark, night sky. There, looming high on a hilltop, was the Acropolis and the Parthenon -- lit up in the night sky. It took my breath away. And still does."

Enjoyed the itinerary and Filippos's enthusiasm. You can tell he loves what he does. I went to Greece thinking I wouldn't like the food and because of the experiences provided by Filllippos, I left Greece as a big fan. Enjoyed so many things that he set up for us...The greek dancers, and jazzy music group with dinner.

"I thought the Acropolis Museum was incredible. Its architectural features (glass floor "windows" into the archealogical excavation underneath, the set-up of the pillars and the marbles which simulate the Parthenon) are so well thought out. This is our sixth RST and it was great in all respects. Great guide and fellow tour members. We took our daughter and son-in-law with us on their first RST and they enjoyed it immensely. Good food and hotels with a bit of RST quirkeyness thrown in for good measure. After touring Sicily, this was a good next stop as it really brought the Greek culture into focus. There's a good selection of museums and outside ruin walks. I'm still overwhelmed with their engineering skill.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I have two. First was in Athens and seeing the original 2000 year old stadium near our hotel that is still used today. The second was bittersweet. Entering the original Olympic stadium through the competitor's entrance brought me to tears. I'm a 69 yo non-athlete, but began doing run/walk 10K's and half-marathons a few years ago to improve my fitness. A year ago an arthritic hip ended my running/walking. I realized what I missed and decided right there to move forward with hip surgery."

This was our fourth RS tour, and was possibly my favourite. It combined the right amount of history, including visits to archeological sites and museums, plus time to explore interesting small towns. We also got to enjoy incredible food and experience unique cultural events. The local shopkeepers and hoteliers were welcoming, helpful and charming. All in all the perfect combination in which to thoroughly enjoy and appreciate the Greek experience!

"It is incredibly hard to choose just one. A number of us in our tour group, including Colin our guide, hiked up to the top of the Rock in Monemvasia. Once at the top, the view of the town and surrounding area was breathtaking. All of us who made it to the top posed for a picture to remember our experience. Overall, this was one of my favorite Rick Steves tours. Other than Athens, I had not been to any of the locations on this tour. I find Greece to be magical. I loved the hiking and walking and how active this tour was. Our group was very congenial.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite wow moment was at the Acropolis in Athens. I was in Athens in 1972 and again in 2003. I wanted to recreate the photographic moments from those past years in front of the temples and was able to do so. I also loved visiting Delphi's Sanctuary of Athena Pronea, which I've seen photos of many times. My overall tour experience was excellent. The sites we saw exceeded my expectations. Our tour guide, Colin, provided us a wealth of information about Greece both past & present. Our accommodations were comfortable with great service. All these factors, along with perfect weather, made this trip special.

"My WOW moment was the hike to the top of the "Rock" at Monemvasia. After touring the Lower town in the morning we ventured up the well worn switchbacks to the Agia Sophia and onto the ruins of Upper Town. This tour was wonderfully varied, allowing me to see a side of Greece which I admittedly was ignorant. In true Rick Steves style, we visited the major sites with the assistance of wonderful local docents after our guide, Colin, had provided in depth background. And we usually visited these sites when crowds were small which made the experience all the more meaningful. But this tour also took us into the very rugged mountains and rural sea side. Beautiful places.

The hotels were lovely, and the sites visited were so very interesting! One word of warning--this tour is strenuous! Lots of up and down stairs, which can be challenging for aging knees. This was our 2nd Rick Steves tour after completing Best of Italy just last year. I have been waiting 40 years to get to Greece and it was well worth the wait. Our tour guide, Apostolos, was outstanding and added a very personal & emotional touch to the sites, history and everyday lifestyle of past & present day Greeks. We had contemplated touring Greece on our own but are so glad we didn't. Apostolos and the local tour guides added so much more to our experience. We highly recommend this tour!

"There were so many "wow" moments but clearly the biggest was also the first. Having arrived at our Athens hotel late after a long day of travel the hotel staff checked us in quickly. We dropped off our bags and headed up to the new roof-top restaurant for a relaxing dinner. As we stepped off the elevator, the Acropolis & Parthenon were lit up against the night sky, forever emblazoned on my memory. I had arrived. I was in Greece, the cradle of our civilization!"

Even though one has seen a million pictures of the Parthenon to see it in person was just stupendous, it is simply amazing. I felt similarly about the array of ancient sites and fabulous sculptures we saw. Food was excellent, except the welcoming dinner which was mediocre and late. Apostolos Douras was just delightful, witty and full of wonderful stories and interesting tales about Greece, ancient and modern. He is one of the very best guides I have had. Up there with Mark Seymour.

The arrangement of the tour alone is very good but Apostolos, our guide, made it so much more! He made Greece real for us, he helped us emerge into Greece. Our tour group was an amazing group of people. The greeks were very friendly and helpful.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were many but the one that stands out in my mind was the view from our table having a delicious lunch in Lagkadia!"

Apostolos was amazing. Very attentive to each person and worked to make sure everyone enjoyed the tour, no matter what their level of fitness or needs on any particular day. The trips to the small villages and the interactions with the locals, was the most memorable part of the tour. We came for the monuments and ruins and left with a real love for the people of Greece.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The beehive tomb in Mycenae, Treasury of Atreus. 1000 years before the Acropolis, how did they construct that tomb? Cyclops or space aliens? I was dumbfounded. The rest of the site was amazing as well. Our local guide, Patty was very informative."

Danae, the best tour guide - knowledgeable and engaging. Panos the bus driver was extremely skilled on the narrow mountain roads - a nice man. The people in the group - all very nice, laid back. Smaller group size and more room on the bus - good.Liked vacation from our vacation in Kardimyli. The tour eliminated the hassle of dealing with transfers, crowds in the museums, obtaining tickets... 14 days about 2 days too long. Bored at the end. Learned so much!!!!!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The view from out hotel room in Kardimyli, and the special birthday cake and celebration provided by Danae that day for my husband. Not to mention the monuments, especially Olympia. The stories etched on the blocks at Delphi. Cooking class and meal at Monovasia/Panorama - excellent , the best food and warm camaraderie of group."

The tour guide (Danae) was charming, polite and effervescent. She made every effort to ensure a wonderful experience for all travelers. Her enthusiasm and manner of story telling was great to exceptional. She made every effort to prepare us for each site with relevant history and tying it into greek culture, past and present.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"so many to choose from. unbelievable archaeology, history. probably a dinner in kardamyli at a seaside restaurant. A thatched table in a light rain overlooking a cliff with an unbelievable view of the ocean and sunset on my birthday."

Trip exceeded our expectations. This was our second experience with Rick Steves' tours (Germany-Austria-Switzerland) and this trip was nicely organized and very informative. The group we traveled with were all wonderful people that we connected with. The days were filled with enjoyable activities and adequate free time for individual pursuits. The local guides were all excellent and our general guide Danae was exceptional, we can't say enough about her communication and organizational skills.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Olympia and the ancient site of the Olympics was a highlight. The idea that we were walking the same ground into the ancient stadium as those before Christ is mind boggling. Also thought standing where the Olympic torch is lit was cool."

We had a great time in Greece with Anastasia and our tour mates. We learned a lot about the culture and the history of this amazing country. We were always amazed at the "ancientness" of it all. When you hear dates like 1600 BC all you can think of is "Wow!" Most of the hotel accommodations were good, however some of the beds/mattresses were lacking. We enjoyed all the group dining experiences. The food was great, however it was always too much. It felt a little gluttonous at times.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I had many. All the ruins and the many shades of blue waters of the Ionian and Aegean Seas were beautiful and amazing. The ruins at Mystras were my favorite and I loved swimming in both the seas and looking down at the sea from the upper town ruins of Monemvasia . My very favorite "wow" experience was probably the cog railway ride up the Vouraikos Gorge."

Another great RS tour. Logistics well coordinated as usual, Anna and all the docents provided great local, national and historical info about their country and a civilization like no other. Delphi helped us turn the weather to beautiful.

This was our second tour with Rick Steves and our experience was a continuous scrapbook of memories! The food, sights, local guides and the friendly outgoing participants all combined to make this tour outstanding. Of course, our guide, Anastasia provided the leadership and always added just the right spice to make our adventures delicious.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Waking up in Monemvasia, seeing the sun rise and later hiking to the top[INVALID]-what a view! In fact, our tour had continuous "WOW" moments that included a series of hikes (with views) shared with fellow adventurous tour participants. One scrapbook memory that is etched in making moussaka with my wife in Monemvasia under the able and humorous direction of our hotel host."

This was our first trip with Rick Steves tours. I've planned our trips for 10+ years using Rick Steves guidebooks and he's never let us down! We thought it was of note that only one other person in our group was doing a RS trip for the first time--all the others had 2+ trips under their belts--that has to say a lot for the company! Our guide was outstanding (Anastasia), the bus driver delightful (Christos) and careful, the trip plan detailed and organized!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"See the wealth of archaeological sites in Greece--they do not disappoint. Combined with the history, stories/myths, etc. that Anastasia would share with us, it made for one great day after the next."

I've been on 6 Rick Steves tours and I would say this one was not as inspiring to me. On all previous 5 tours I loved seeing places with good and bad historical significance. I appreciate knowing and feeling for the people, etc. This trip didn't have that same feeling, but not sure if it was the place or just the time in my life that was different.

"Climbing to the top of the rock in Monemvasia. The views were absolutely breathtaking. Also, wished I could have spent more days in Hydra, but that's something I can always do on my own. :)"

It was a dream of my husband's to take this trip. His father had been in the Navy and visited the area and spoke of it's beauty. I was happy to get to go with him on this trip and experience the beauty of the Greek countryside as well as it's lovely coastline and welcoming people.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I think, for me, it was early on, when we walked to the top of the Acropolis, lead by Faye, the great local guide. It was so beautiful there and amazing to imagine what it was like in it's day. I loved the ladies who held up a portion of the roof of the Erechtheion. How nice to see these beautiful women, and then to see the originals when we went to the Acropolis Museum."

It was great. Loved the sights we went to, the beautiful scenery on the bus, and the friends we got to meet. Ioanna was a wonderful guide. She did a great job of explaining the sights we saw and told some fun stories along the way. I have been on several tours and enjoyed them all, but this was fantstic. I liked that we saw so much, but still had some relaxing time. The food was amazing also. Thank you Rick Steves.

My husband, Mark, & I have enjoyed Rick Steves' PBS travel show & used his books on our trips abroad for many years. This was our first time taking his escorted tour & we are excited to sign up for more! We want to wholeheartedly thank our EXCELLENT Greek tour guide, Ioanna Papakosta. Ioanna brought the marble, bronze, museums, sites & culture of her beloved Greece to life with her vibrant, positive personality & impressive knowledge. She is an AMAZING teacher, so fun and funny!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The cooking class taught by Rene was wonderful, as was that meal and our visit to her darling sweet shop. Thanks for the laughter, delicious food and recipes. We loved the hikes and amazing views upon reaching the summits! The traditional music and dance night was wonderful as were the trout meal and gourmet meal the final night in Athens."
