Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Greece

At 6 p.m. we'll meet at our hotel for a "Welcome to Athens" meeting. Then we'll get oriented to our neighborhood and walk to a nearby restaurant where we can get acquainted over dinner. Sleep in Athens (2 nights). No bus. Walking: light.

Day 2: Athens' Acropolis

This morning we'll hike to the top of Athens' legendary Acropolis, where we'll take a walking tour of its 2,500-year-old Golden Age temples, dominated by the dramatic Parthenon. We'll then work our way down and tour the sleek new Acropolis Museum, custom built to showcase the amazing Parthenon sculptures. Your afternoon and evening are free for exploring Athens' marketplaces — the ancient Agora and the modern Plaka's labyrinth of inviting streets, squares, shops, and cafés. No bus. Walking: strenuous.

Day 3: Greek Treasures and Delphi

This morning we'll tour Athens' impressive National Archaeological Museum, home to amazingly preserved masterpieces in marble, bronze, and gold. Then we'll leave the city and drive into the rugged countryside. In a dramatic setting on the flanks of 8,000-foot Mt. Parnassus we'll enjoy the fresh air and tour the mystical ruins of Delphi. Here, 25 centuries ago, the celebrated oracle allowed mere mortals to converse with the gods. This evening we'll have dinner together and sleep in the town of Delphi (1 night). Bus: 4 hours. Walking: strenuous.

Day 4: Peloponnese Mountains

Today we'll cross over the Gulf of Corinth to the Peloponnese, where we'll temporarily leave our bus for a steep, scenic cog railway ride up to the historic town of Kalavryta, past the waterfalls and caves lining the narrow Vouraikos Gorge. Just beyond at a riverside café in the mountain village of Planitero, we'll enjoy a lunch of freshly caught trout and other Greek specialties before our bus takes us to our destination high up in the Menalon Mountains. Tonight we'll enjoy dinner together. Sleep in or near Lagkadia (1 night). Train: 1 hour. Bus: 5 hours. Walking: light.

Day 5: Ancient Olympia

This morning's winding mountain drive will take us to Olympia, site of the world's first Olympics, over 2,700 years ago. There we'll take a vivid walking tour of Olympia's ancient athletic venues, temples, and museum, followed by lunch together. This afternoon's drive will take us along sweeping views of the Ionian Sea to a relaxed seaside village on the Mani Peninsula, where we'll sleep (2 nights). Bus: 5 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 6: Seaside Vacation

The Mani is an ideal place to enjoy a "vacation from your vacation." After some orientation by your guide, the day is all yours. You might hike along the ancient cobbled paths that wind their way through the nearby hills — or just relax on the beach — and end your day with a grilled seafood dinner and a view from the little taverna you've discovered. No bus. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 7: Mani Villages

We'll follow the coast to the isolated Mani Peninsula, home to generations-long clan wars, salt-of-the-earth villages, and unique pyrgospita — tower houses. If Greece had a Tombstone and an O.K. Corral, here is where they'd be. We'll enjoy lunch together, and after making a few off-the-beaten-path discoveries, we'll ride on to the dramatically set medieval town of Monemvasia, where you'll be free for dinner. Sleep in mainland Monemvasia (2 nights). Bus: 5 hours. Walking: light.

Day 8: Medieval Monemvasia

This morning we'll cross the causeway to tackle the massive rock that shoots straight up out of the blue-green Aegean Sea. After an orientation walk around Monemvasia's cozy little Lower Town, you'll have free time to wander more of the romantic walled town or take a swim in the Aegean. Those who want a workout can hike to the very top of the rock. You will be rewarded with sweeping Aegean views and a chance to explore the ruins of the Upper Town — a living museum of Byzantine, Ottoman, and Venetian history. This evening we'll enjoy a cooking demonstration, followed by dinner together. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 9: Byzantine Mystras

Today we'll head up into the heart of the Peloponnese, where we'll tour the haunting ruins of the fortress town of Mystras and its still-standing group of Byzantine churches. After stopping in nearby Sparta for lunch, we'll continue north to our destination: the delightful, fortress-topped harbor town of Nafplio. We'll enjoy a Greek wine and ouzo tasting, and sleep in Nafplio (2 nights). Bus: 5 hours. Walking: strenuous.

Day 10: Mycenae and Nafplio

After breakfast we'll take a short drive to mysterious Mycenae, the fortified city founded by Perseus a thousand years before the Parthenon was built. We'll take a walking tour through the grand Lion Gate, along the "cyclopean" walls, and into a remarkably domed tholos tomb. Then we'll return to Nafplio for a free afternoon to explore the colorful alleyways of the Old Town, ride a boat to the little castle island in the harbor, or hike up to enjoy a Venetian fortress view. We'll regroup for dinner and music together this evening. Bus: 1 hour. Walking: moderate.

Day 11: Ancient Epidavros

This morning we'll drive to nearby Epidavros. Once the most famous healing center in the Mediterranean, today's star attraction is its ancient theater, large enough to accommodate 14,000. We'll learn about the roots of medicine and drama here, before hopping a boat to the idyllic traffic-free island of Hydra, where we'll sleep (2 nights). Boat: ½ hour. Bus: 2 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 12: Island of Hydra

Your entire day is free to soak up the whitewashed architecture as you wander Hydra's narrow streets and harbor promenade. You might swim at a nearby beach, hike across the island, or try to make friends with a donkey. We will cap our island vacation with a relaxing sunset happy hour. No bus. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 13: Return to Athens

This morning we'll take a ferry ride to Piraeus, where our bus will be waiting to take us back to our Athens hotel. Your afternoon is free to wander and shop through the Plaka, or explore other parts of this bustling city. Tonight we'll gaze at the floodlit Acropolis and enjoy a final dinner together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Opa! Sleep in Athens (1 night). Boat: 2 hours. Bus: 1 hour. Walking: light.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. You can easily catch a cab for the airport, or to nearby Piraeus where a fleet of ferries awaits to transport those with time to even more Greek destinations. Antio!

This tour was my first Rick Steves tour. I have traveled extensively in Europe on my own since 1971 and lived as an expat in Asia for 7 years, where I also traveled extensively. I chose this tour because I had never been to Greece and the tour looked like a good option for seeing a wide array of places without driving myself. I am very glad I did. I learned more taking this tour than I ever would have just booking day tours at various sites.

We absolutely loved our Greece tour! Our guide, David was fantastic. His knowledge of Greece is amazing and he loved to share it with the group. David went out of his way to make sure we had a great experience, not only making sure we had historical knowledge of the country, but also sharing information of the current situation in Greece and of course sharing his vast botanical information on our walks. All of the museum guides were wonderful, as well, especially Faye in Athens.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Every day held "wow" moments! Seeing all of the sites that we learned about in Ancient World history was amazing. Greece is a beautiful country, and I was "wowed" also with the tiny mountain villages, the Byzantine murals (especially in Kastania), the deep blue/greens of the waters of the Mediterranean, and the peaceful laid back atmosphere of Hydra. The evening with musicians and dancing in Nafplio was fantastic! This tour is simply packed with "wow" moments!"

This was my first full fledged tour. I did a My Way tour and loved it, but Greece did not have a My Way tour option. I was very apprehensive to do a tour, but overall it was a great experience. As with the My Way tour, I loved the hotels and the transportation being all done for us. I enjoyed most of the dinners, as they all had a different flare to them and loved trying new foods. Loved the tour guides!!! Would love to have a little more open time to be able to explore on your own.

This tour was fabulous. Beautiful, history-rich sites with subject matter experts pulling all the pieces together at each stop. The scenery of Greece is breathtaking and we covered a lot of the country going around the Peloponnese. There were a range of activities from Greek traditional folk dancing to a cooking demo of moussaka and baklava. We had a wonderful guide in David Willett who is as knowledgeable about Ancient Greece as he is about modern Greece. Costas was a fabulous driver.

"Nothing really competes with seeing the Acropolis live. But, I so enjoyed looking at the ocean, mountains and the little town of Kardamyli from our balcony while drinking a glass of Greek white wine and eating olives. It was so relaxing. Also, listening to Faye talk about Greek history and art in the Acropolis Museum and the Archaelogical Museum were highlights."

David was an outstanding guide, professional, very knowledgeable, full of energy and lots of humor which made us laugh a lot! Great product sampling in an Athens specialty store. Having a private dinner and Dancing Zorbas performers was a very nice touch and so fun to dance with them in Nafplio. Loved the Greek wine sampling as well. The coooking class I thoroughly enjoyed in Monemvasia

Wonderful, educational trip to Greece. This was our 3rd RS tour and we've loved every one of them, but Greece was one of the best.

"It's hard to single out one 'moment' that sticks out. I mean when you're talking about 2500 years ago in history...just walking where some of our ancient predecessors had walked was special. The Olympic Stadium and the location where the Olympic flame initiates every 4 years was awesome."

Although we have traveled on our own in the past, we have always used the Rick Steves' guidebooks and planned our tours with those suggestions which were always spot on regarding location (walkable distance to sites, cultural hub) and affordability. We just completed a guided tour of Greece and it was outstanding with David Willett as our guide. His experience (15? years leading tours in Greece) and extensive knowledge and love of that country made our experience so much richer!

Athens and the Heart of Greece tour was every bit as good as Village Italy. David was a fantastic guide. He is an Australian who knows everything - past and present there is to know about Greece. The tour was full of great, wine, food, art, Byzantine churches, villages with cobblestones streets and friendly people. The other people on the tour were really nice. A mix of mid forties to mid seventies with two teenagers. Great tour!

Just fantastic! I've never been on this type of tour before, and I was a little concerned over the experience we would have and the other people on the tour but the "no grumps" policy gave me hope. I needn't have worried! What a great bunch of people, amazing places, and the David was outstanding as a guide. I would jump at the chance to do another Rick Steves' tour! Perhaps one of Northern Greece? :)

"There were so many wows! I think the outstanding wow was seeing the frescoes inside the tiny churches in Kastania. History really came alive for me then, and we were able to experience the frescoes intimately as the inhabitants do. I feel privileged that I was able to see this very special part of another culture's faith. Kastania is so out if the way that I doubt if we would have seen anything like it with another tour. And the Greek coffee and snacks were fun! Wonderful, magical place."

Sometimes the stars perfectly align and a tour has the best combination of location, guide and group. That is what happened on the Heart of Greece tour. David is an excellent guide. He is relaxed, personable and knowledgeable. The group got along so well and truly enjoyed the adventures of travel. Greece was so much more than ruins. I loved how we saw and experienced so much of Greece and the Greeks.

From hotel check in to final tour dinner the trip was first rate in every category. This was our first tour, it will not be our last. Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite 'wow' moment from the tour would have to be the ruins from Athens, ancient Delphi and ancient Olympia. I chose these three because there was so much history to be learned from these places and I love learning about history especially when I previously didn't know it; like how the Parthenon was transformed into a church I think dedicated to the Virgin Mary or how there was a female Olympics a month after the main event."

Although we have traveled in Europe on our own (with the help of Rick Steves books), this was our first group tour and it far exceeded my expectations. The surprises: how much I enjoyed the company of others on the tour; how much I learned from David and from our local tour guides; how enjoyable it is to leave the driving to someone else; how much good food we were exposed to as a result of all the group meals; how we were able to visit off-the-beaten-path mountain villages.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Experiencing the ancient archeological sites and seeing the objects from them in related museums is mind-blowing. One wants so badly to go back in time to see those ancient people moving about in their everyday lives, and you can't get closer to that than standing among the ruins of once-thriving civilizations. The dual mysteries of time and what it means to be human were my constant companions on this tour."

Everything was outstanding from our knowledgeable and FUN guide David to the museum guides. The itinerary allowed for lots of exploring on our own including long walks and hill climbs. I appreciated the frequent breaks during the bus rides. I am a vegan but it was never a problem, David had it all sorted out for me and I ate like a queen. The trip itself, Greece and its history, have me hooked and I want to return if a tour of northern Greece is every on offer.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Impossible to say. Everything was WOW. If forced to choose, I guess the coastal and mountain towns and villages were the best. The maze-like streets of the small towns were a constant pleasure. Every corner we turned, we were greeted by another enchanting lane. And the views from the tops of the towns to the sea were a joy. I really hate to even choose because I loved the museums and the historical sites just as much."

Greece is definitely a beautiful and mountainous country. There is so much history to see and experience, it is hard to do it in one trip. The food was phenomenal, the people were warm and welcoming and were interested to talk about where we from. The tour gave me a great taste of everything Greece and I now have a different appreciation for what the local Greek people are going through. I definitely got to see all the highlights needed on this well run tour.

"Hard to pick one, but, the day we spent in Monemvasia hiking around the top of "The Rock" in the ruins hip deep in beautiful, massive amounts of flowers. The views from the top were absolutely breath taking. Seeing the harbour from the top, the expanse of the Mediterranean sea was a perfect reward for the long hike up. Feel lucky to see it when everything was lush, green, and full of flowers."

Tour guide Anastasia and bus driver Costas were a great team throughout. Competent, careful, and fun to be with. I'm a historian and retired museum director, and I was awed by Anastasia's thorough knowledge of both Greek and regional history (enough so that she diplomatically corrected misstatements of local guides--after the fact) and Greek mythology. There's no way that a newbie to Greece could put together this comprehensive itinerary, find the great small hotels, drive those roads...

I enjoyed traveling with a group of compatible, friendly, and helpful people. I appreciated the knowledge and resourcefulness of our guide Anastasia, and especially loved that she connected the classical Greek myths most of us knew to physical geographical places. (I now know where to find the doorway to Hades should I ever want to visit.) I was not prepared for the beauty of Greece, the picturesque landscapes, and I was delighted to be able to experience so much of it.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I have read and enjoyed the writings of the classical writer Plutarch for many years, and I was thrilled to visit Delphi, where Plutarch served as a priest. And I could never properly express my gratitude to local guide, Penny, who when she learned how much I admired Plutarch, led me past museum officials anxious to close up for the day to a where a bust of Plutarch stood, and pointed out his name written on the base. I was powerfully moved by that experience."

This was my first Rick Steeves tour and I loved it! My fellow travellers were interesting and friendly and the sort of people that are a pleasure to meet. Everyone was positive and upbeat even when things (weather and whatnot) were not perfect. They stood by your pledge not to be complainers! Hard to expand on "Outstanding" for tour and Guide! It was our first and only of four tours which started and ended in the city we flew in and out of. All hotels were well heated in March.

Ioanna was a superb tour guide. Her sweet wit and kindnesses brought our group together with laughter and comraderie. She told us about her family, their favorite foods, superstitions and passions. Ioanna was able to bring history alive and connect it to the future to help us better understand the Greek culture. Our specific tour guides were also excellent, and captivated us with highlights of the archeological sites we visited.

"Personally, my "wow moment" was the extended understanding of the history of Greece. I found myself marveling at the vast history from the Minoans up to and including the current (and unfortunate) austerity measures the country is experiencing. I learned so much while on this tour. Greek history is fascinating, with Greek mythology, and the influence of the individual city-states, the Ottoman Empire, the Romans, the Venetians, the Byzantines. So much of world history and language is influenced by Greek roots, and the guides were gifted in highlighting ancient Greek influences into today's culture and language. The places we visited were all informative, and helped to weave together history and modern Greek life.

What a wonderful 14 days. It was a perfect mix of free time, organized activities, group meals, city walks, country sides, history, and mythology. Our guide, Ioanna, was superb. She kept us interested and well informed (and well fed).

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Opa! Greek Night in Nafplio. We had a group dinner at a local restaurant with great food, live musical performances, and folk dancing. When one of the dancers made "eye contact", my WOW moment quickly became a "OH NO" moment. I was picked to dance with them. The dancing was fun even though I have 4 left feet. For a brief moment, I thought I was in a scene from My Big Fat Greek Wedding. What a night!"

Great tour. The history and scenery all laid out in a way that brought new insight and beauty with each day. But when the ancient dust settles travel is about the people. Rick's tours draw people who are open to new experience and to each other. This group certainly proved the rule. Thank you to all for sharing of yourselves and making this such an enjoyable trip. Our guide Ioanna has clearly found her calling. Her warmth and humanity make her Greece's perfect ambassador. Efharisto!

The tour more than met my expectations. It provided me an understanding of Greek culture and its current issues. This was our second Rick Steves tour, and I wondered if it could possibly be as good overall as our first (Basque). It was! The itinerary, our guide Colin, our fellow travelers, the food, and Greece itself, all made for an incredible two weeks.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The highlight of my Greek adventure was swimming in the Aegean Sea, in four different towns along the southern Peloponnese. I have never seen water as clear, and combined with a perfect temperature, and a saltiness that gave amazing buoyancy, it was an unforgettable experience. An extremely congenial group made the tour most enjoyable. Visiting so many historical sites, many from 1500 years BC, with an excellent historical background provided by Colin was so educational with a wow factor. Accommodation in small family run hotels was much preferable to large 'could be anywhere hotels'. Climbing up and down many stairs to reach some of these hotels was not a great experience. The food was excellent, particularly at the lunches and dinners arranged by Colin.

Athens & the Heart of Greece began and ended happily at the Hera Hotel 5th floor bar where, with Banks and Val Warden, dear friends for 40 years, we shared anticipation for the journey to come and, on the 14th day, shared memories of a fantastic trip. The libation of choice for me and Val, a now traditional Aperol Spritz, and a Greek beer for the men. There were many surprises along the way- all happy ones. I would love to do it all again. First of all the tour guide and other guides at each site get an outstanding rating. Maria had the passion and personal stories that made everyone listen and feel every word. She was interesting and fun but yet very professional. The food was good, and the family style serving was festive. The last meal of the tour was delicious and a great way to end the trip. The "very good" rating rather than " outstanding " rating is for the rooms. Shower heads didn't work and rooms were bad.

Tour was an education. First - couldn't have had a better guide to lead the trip. Maria was outstanding both in her knowledge of the place but also management of tour details. The tour was excellent and exceeded our expectations. This was our third Rick Steves tour and we had high expectations. Our schedule was changed so we went to the National Archeology museum on our last day. This should be a permanent change. Having the museum last pulled together all the places we visited. Another great RS Tour in the books (#8). Our guide Filippos is one of the best. His vast knowledge of Greece was complimented by his tales of current-day Greece and entertaining personal-interest stories that made you laugh. The tour was a perfect blend of structured and free time to explore. Besides the ancient historical sites and museums, the itinerary takes the 'road less traveled' to enjoy the natural beauty of the mountains, sea and small towns of Greece.

"there were many! In terms of ancient historical sites it was the Acropolis of Athens, the ruins of Delphi, and the site of the world's first Olympics (running in the arena). However, it's hard to top 'sipping into sunset' by the blue-green sea on the island of Hydra (a favorite)."

"Unlike many tours where there is one specific moment which is breathtaking, this tour included so many special moments. Some include standing at the top of the Acropolis and overlooking the city of Athens, standing at the finish line of the original Olympic stadium, understanding the true Oracle of Delphi, and the island of Hedra experience."

Loved this trip. Our guide, Filippos, was well organized, fun and, as a native son, knowledgeable about Greece's past and present. The sites were great as expected and I was pleasantly surprised by the scenic villages we spent time in. There was plenty of free time to "vacation" in between sightseeing which gave our group an opportunity to get to know each other. I don't have one complaint!

Tour was very good. Filippos, our guide, was excellent. The amount of tour time and free time was well balanced. We got to see all of the most important attractions with the right amount of time at each location. We got to see town & points of interest that we never would have seen if we hadn't gone on the tour. Places outside of Athens & the Islands that we would go back to. I am glad you said this was more strenuous trip so that I was able to prepare and do everything without effort.

Everything on the tour went well, he planning was great, and the sites visited were excellent. Our driver, Christos, was exceptional. I felt that I was successfully immersed in Greece, both ancient and modern. Our superb tour leader made the history and ancient sites come alive and connected them to Greece's modern history and current situation. The local guides were adept at helping us grasp the essence of each place and its key particulars. I was impressed at how rugged Greece is. It's like Appalachia with fewer trees. To get that you have to be there, and the tour did that very well.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Because the tour leader and guides were able to make ancient Greece come alive for us, I was most deeply impressed with how much the ancient Greeks were able to accomplish in a time of no machinery or technology, and how much they lived in their own time very much like how we live in ours. I felt connected to them as people and was astonished contemplating their technical skills. I wonder at what they did with what they had, and yet they were people with lives like ours."

This trip exceeded our expectations starting with our guide, Maria. She could not have been better. She was very knowledgeable about all facets of our trip with a nice mix of professional and personal. EXCELLENT tour guide!! Extremely capable bus driver! A diverse, but amazingly compatible tour group. Soooo many sights; soooo many memories! Danae went out to her way to work with my gluten and caw-dairy food allergies; a couple times she made sure the hotels carried a couple breakfast products just for me, and she always made sure during our group dinners that the chefs had dishes that I could eat. The pace of the tour was just about right, with some relaxing time following strenuous days. Our guide Colin made it an especially rewarding experience due to his expansive knowledge of Greek history and culture.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Greece was a wow. We realized every day that we were walking where people had lived and struggled for thousands of years, leaving to us the foundations of Western civilization. Walking on the Acropolis (of course) and at Ancient Olympia left us in awe."

Can't wait for our next Rick Steve's adventure.

This was my first Rick Steves tour, and I was extremely happy with the experience. Our guide, Maria, was very knowledgeable and a fantastic storyteller. She ensured that we were well informed, safe, comfortable, and provided personal touches to our activities. I thought our driver, Kostas, was also exceptional. The travel route was well planned and provided enough free time at each location to explore.

"It is extremely difficult to pick just one "WOW" moment from this tour! It seemed like just when I didn't think it could get any better, something new would make my jaw drop. It's mind boggling to walk among the ancient ruins and then see artifacts in the museums dating back hundreds (and in some cases, thousands) of years BC. Also, eating fresh caught and prepared calamari and red mullet along the aqua blue water in Limeni & floating in the cool waters of the Aegean in Hydra -- spectacular!"

I was very happy with all the locations we stopped at,very happy with all the lodging and comfortable bus transportation. The optional events offered to us were both educational and fun. I think we got a fairly accurate feel for the Greek experience. The overall plus of this tour was the exceptional job our tour guide,Maria Sioulas, did, keeping us informed, the activities she set up,and just her energizing personality. I feel fortunate in that our entire tour group made the trip.

I have been on two other RS tours and my expectations were high. This trip did not disappoint. As usual, the trip provided great historical and current societal information. The schedule was a good balance between tour events and free time to explore on my own. The landscapes are beautiful from mountains to coast and everything in between - and the people are most welcoming.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"So many!! Delphi was moving for me in a can't-quite-put-my-finger-on-it kind of way. It was remote and inspiring and magical. The view from the fortress at Monemvasia was worth the climb. Beyond my expectations. We have traveled previously using Rick Steves books as our guide. This, though, was our first tour. I loved not having to be the CEO of my own vacation. It was unexpected how much more fun and relaxing it was to have a great itinerary, fabulous guides, ideal mix of structured and free time, and a great group of folks. The food was superb and the extras (things we just would never have done if on our own) were all special treats. SUPER trip. Thanks!

"So many. Just because it was the first, I'd say our first meal as a group under the shadow of the Acropolis in Athens. It was a gorgeous evening. Though we were all strangers, we sat at a long table in the open air, were served an amazing meal while local musicians serenaded us with lively music (while a large table of happy Russians sang along). Little did we know that it was just the first of many such experiences. I must add the group meal of trout next to a mountain stream. Enchanting."

LOVED everything about this tour- the guide, bus driver, local guides, hotels, food, sights, fellow tour mates, and even the weather were all PERFECT!!!! Having been on one other Rick Steves' tour, I thought that this one would have a tough time matching it. However, it surpassed it thanks to our Guide Extraordinaire Anastasia Gaitanou!! Very enjoyable trip! Anastasia was a most dedicated, fun, & informed tour guide. The entire group bonded well together & we've been communicating since. We found the Greek people to be so friendly and helpful, which is even more astonishing considering their very real and depressing economic situation. As visitors, we were insulated from this more than I expected. The itinerary brought us to places we wouldn't have easily known about or navigated on our own.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Parthenon has been on my 'bucket list' for as long as I can remember, and the entire Acropolis did not disappoint. The museums we saw really showcased the amazing ability of those who lived many thousands of years before. The ancient site of the Olympic games was a surprising wow for me."

This tour exceeded my expectations and my expectations were very high since I have used Rick Steves' material for other travel and I watch his shows on PBS. Favorite "WOW" moment

"Every day had "wow" moments. I had read THE GREEK TREASURE by Irving Stone about Heinrich and Sophia Schliemann's findings at Troy and Mycenae, and I was "wowed" to see the gold items in the National Archaeological Museum and the "cyclopean" stones at Mycenae. We would do it again. Like our previous Portugal tour, we enjoyed not being "herd," with a group of compatible, responsible fellow group members that was small enough to not be overwhelming. We were able to see and do things that we would not likely have done if we were traveling independently; however, we also had sufficient time and flexibility to do many things on own own away from the group. We saw and did many beautiful things and we feel we experienced Greece and its people.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We especially enjoyed independent walks. Our short hike to the west end of upper Monevmasia beyond the church, to the ruins overlooking new Monemvasia, was wonderful. A close second was our morning Hydra walk to the mountaintop monastery. Our Kalimyli hike up to the little church amidst the high, imposing mountains was also beautiful."

I loved the quaintness of the Lower Town and the view of the sea from the restaurant where I had the best hot brownie I've ever eaten! Filippos struck the perfect balance between being present and available -- explicit "guiding" -- and giving us space to discover ourselves and the places we were exploring. The itinerary was very well-designed, giving us enough time to fall in love with a particular destination only to be torn away and fall in love once more. I appreciated the rest days in Kardamyli and Hydra as well.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Wow [INVALID] so many "wow" moments! I was stunned when we walked into the museum at Olympia and saw the marble pedimental sculptures. Delphi [INVALID] where we could have had a little more time [INVALID] was also astounding. It felt so imbued with sacrality. Eating fried mullet as we entered the Peloponnese was a "wow" as well. The RS Greece tour was my 9th RS Tour, and was wonderful. I especially loved the mix of world-famous sites of classical Greece, along with visits to diverse smaller towns that I had never even heard off before, and, as I found out, even many Greeks have not heard of either. We were especially impressed by our fellow seasoned travelers - our conversations enhanced the overall experience.

Overall it was a good trip. However, I was expecting to see the country and the key archaeological sites but I was not prepared for 6 museums. That was too many. A lot of it was just redundant. I was also expecting to hear more about the country today, rather than 800 BC. The Peloponnese is a beautiful place and an ideal way to experience Greece. The variety was amazing - I loved the ancient sites and the medieval villages, as well as seeing the ways the land is used today.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Many 'wow' moments, but the first was in Delphi when I realized I was actually here in this beautiful landscape at a sacred site. My 'wow' moments all happened in the wonderful natural settings where it was possible to get a sense of the connectedness of people to their environment over thousands of years."

Generally good but several serious problems. Too much free time. Could have been productively used to visit some very important sites which we drove very close to. For example Chaeronea, Plaetea, Leuctra, some of the most important battles in history happened here and we were within a few miles. Marathon and Thermopylae could be added. And how about Eleusis on road to Delphi, where the seasons began, Persephone stolen by Hades, sanctuary of Demeter - another serious omission. Con't below

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Seeing Acropolis for first time! Continuing from above , with Rick's sense of history also could have had short water cruise possibly with lunch, in Ydra. Waterfront unfortunately very commercial. Could also have taken short cruise to straits of Salamis where again one of the most important battles in history occurred. If some people want to rest or shop make these elective side trips. Consider interpreting Pnyx hill and agora- democracy began here!!"

A great bunch of fellow travelers, coupled with an excellent guide were the catalyst of an amazing tour. The amount of climbing and stairs made this a good challenge for me and the amount of walking over the rough terrain did make this a strenuous tour but it was still good for an active blind person with a personal guide(my wife). The scenery is awesome. Mountains, valleys and the seaside and this tour should be a must for all Rick Steve's fans.

I came to the tour with high expectations from Rick Steves tours. All expectations were exceeded. All our locations were spectacularly beautiful, we visited hidden gems that would be impossible to find on our own, we had ample opportunity to meet Greek people. All our guides were well prepared and made thought provoking presentations. And I absolutely fell in love with Maria, who effortlessly conveyed her joy, enthusiasm, and Greek pride.

I believe that it was truly our guide, Maria, who made it such a wonderful experience. In a word, Maria was AWESOME. The itinerary was well-designed, with just the right amount of time at each stop. The lodging, while not upscale, was acceptable. Local guides were also excellent. We will definitely do another RS tour.

Loved the Rick Steves tour to Greece! Rick Steves tours are the perfect combination of planned/scheduled time and unplanned/free time for exploring on our own. I toured as a single person, and had the preconceived notion that I would mostly be spending time with other singles as I assumed the couples would keep to themselves, but the tour is designed so that all tour participants get to know each other. I think I'm going to retire in Kardamyli!

This was our second Rick Steves tour.Just like the first tour, we loved meeting our fellow tourists, and by the end of the two weeks, we found it very hard to say goodbye. Our tour guide, Danae, was amazing. She was knowledgeable and passionate about her beautiful country, and always cheerful and smiling. Kostos, our bus driver, was also a pleasure to travel with, and became a key part of our family. He was also very warm and kept everyone laughing. He and Danae make a great team.

This was our second Rick Steves Tour and it exceeded our expectations in every way. The tour was the perfect pace with several free days, one in Kardamyli, one in Monemvasia, and one on the island of Hydra. It was the perfect mix of history with ancient ruins and museums, but also the joy of experiencing Greek village life and stunning scenery. We found the Greek people to be warm and friendly and the food to be delicious.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite "wow" moment was the island of Hydra, a half hour ferry ride off the mainland of Greece. There are no cars or scooters on the island... the only method of transportation is either by foot or by donkey. Very charming fishing village with stunning views, limitless choices for good food and the Hotel Leto was delightful, from the accommodations to the attentive staff. I would return to Greece just for the chance to return to Hydra."

This was my second Rick Steves Tour and far exceeded any expectations I had. Loved everything about Greece-the warm, friendly people, the ancient history, and the stunning scenery. I loved that this trip had some down-time where we could relax and recoup for the next adventure. Danae, Orin, and Kostas our bus driver made this trip memorable; we couldn't have asked for a better combination! The group was so much fun. I loved meeting and traveling with these wonderful people!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I loved the island of Hydra the most. But the "wow" moment came when touring the archaeological sites and museums and realizing how truly advanced the ancient people of Greece were. Seeing such mundane items as "safety pins" and tweezers, along with mechanisms with gears dating back to 300 BC or older, just floored me. Their cooking utensils, urns, frying pans really humbled me. Truly, the more we change, the more we stay the same! A lot of modern day inventions are really re-inventions."

This was our second Rick Steves tour, last year we did Best of Europe 14 days. We liked this one much more because of the more relaxed pace. Greece was a great tour, we got to see all the well known sights as well as many places not seen by the average tourist. The Greek people are friendly and helpful. Food was very good and reasonably priced. Last but not least, our guide, Danae was the best, she loves her country and it is apparent during her daily talks.

As with all Rick Steves tours we have taken, I felt that I learned an incredible amount of information about Greece, past and present, in a 2-week span. The tour provided an interesting mix of the key archaeological and historic sites and artifacts along with an introduction to everyday life in Greece, past and present. The stop I enjoyed the least was Lagkadia, which definitely highlighted ongoing economic challenges in Greece, but those are important to understand.

This trip surpassed my hopes & expectations! I learned a lot, saw historic & interesting sites, had great food, & saw beautiful scenery. It was great group of fellow travelers & a fabulous guide. I especially appreciated the level of activity(strenuous at times, but so worth it!)...helped offset all the food I was eating & kept me in shape! Guide Colin was great; the way he was able to combine history, art, political events & culture was extraordinary...a gift! Better than a college class!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Colin's descriptions of the frescoes in the 12th century Church of Ayios Ioannis in Kastania....gave me shivers to hear about the historical/political events that were shaping the religious art. Excellent. So many things can go wrong on a trip and nothing did! All aspects were terrific! RS surely knows the best combination of structured and free time. If I could add anything to this tour it would be options for live performances. At first I wanted more islands (add Santorini?) but the small coastal towns had to be equivalent to island experiences. THe weather, food, company, guide, bus rides, were all excellent!

In the tour business it seems each supplier has a different vision of what "value to the consumer" is. For some it is providing education, others it is providing perpetual activity. This tour struck a great balance between these 2 perspectives. Immersed in history, educated the easy way by on-sight experts, in the fellowship of other travelers who were interested and interesting, cared for by David, Apostolos and Costas, and fed local cuisine in magical settings: I would say my overall experience was fabulous, fun, fantastic.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"One evening in Kardamili David and Costas prepared our evening meal: BBQ pork and sausages on Costas' grill (just happened to have it in the bowels of the bus). We dined under flowering citrus tress, the air resplendent with the fragrance of the blossoms and the grilling meats. Could anything be better than this? Yes. One of our group sang an aria from La Boheme. This was the kind of thrill I travel for: unexpected, magical, memorable, transcendent."

This was my first RS tour and it fulfilled all my expectations. Our tour guide, David, was exceptional. The weather was fantastic. There was a good balance of planned activities and free time, wonderful meals, and nice accommodations. I came away feeling I had really learned and experienced as much of Greece as is possible in two weeks.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Getting out of Athens! The capital is not Greece's best showplace. The beauty of Greece became apparent as soon as we left the capital and moved into the uncluttered countryside with snow covered mountains, quaint towns, views of the sea and fields of wildflowers."

It was a great experience! Everything went without a hitch. Even though they were not part of the official tour, all my flights went without a problem. I would, and have, recommend Rick Steves tours to everyone I have told about my trip. It was the perfect time of the year to travel in Greece. The weather was perfect and the wildflowers were in bloom. The food was great and plentiful. The hotels, with one exception, were great, with friendly hotel staff and accommodations.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite places were Monemvasia and Hydra. Both picturesque and restful. Coincidently, both had no motor traffic. Winding cobble stoned streets, interesting shopping and friendly people and good food. What more could you want?"

A wonderful tour all around. I felt like we saw the authentic Greece, not just the tourist Greece. The weather this time of year is perfect, and the wild flowers were at peak. This photographer was very happy. Great to be there over Easter - experiencing Easter week and joining in many of the Greek Orthodox traditions was a bonus. Kudos to our guides for being aware of the Easter week schedule and rituals in each town we were in and plugging us into that.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Many moments - very hard to say. I think I enjoyed the day in Monemvasia the most - perhaps because I had no idea what was there and therefore had no expectations. What a delightful town - felt almost like we discovered it."

Our tour leader (David), our group and the local guides were all topnotch. Everyone in our group was punctual and the tour moved along in a very well-organized manner. David has an outstanding knowledge of Greece which he shared in talks on the bus, at mealtimes and on walks. I'm interested in all facets of Greek history so I appreciated everything - the ancient sites, the medieval sites (e.g. - Byzantine churches, walled towns such as at Monemvasia) and modern history.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I'm going to give you three "wow" moments: 1.The entire setting at Delphi on the side of a mountain. My wife & I hiked up & down the entire site. 2. Kalavryta - I had prior knowledge of the WW II NAZI atrocities here and did not realize that our tour was going to this precise spot. Once we were there, I realized that I had seen the story of Kalavryta on tv including the 13 Dec 1943 commemorations on the hillside outside of town. 3. Hiking to the top of the rock at Monemvasia."

For me, the best parts were Delphi, the train ride in the Vouraikos Gorge, Olympia, Monemvasia, Kardamyli, Nafplio, and Hydra. Mycenae was a bit too full of fellow tourists and by Epidavros I had seen a few too many stones.

"I found out why all the noses are broken off Greek statues. Going to our first group dinner, crossing a street in Athens, scooting between parked cars I missed the curb and landed flat on my nose. On the way down my brain told me, "Oh Wow, this is really going to hurt!" After returning to the hotel, our guide, Maria, summoned a doctor who stitched me up. Next day I was good to go, not even a headache. Thanks to Maria Rick Steves' for contingency planning. "

After our last year's Best of Italy tour, I never thought another tour could surpass it, but I was very mistaken. Greece thoroughly surprised and delighted me and I can't figure out why Rick doesn't have 2 or 3 different tours of this beautiful country. Ancient ruins coupled with the beautiful scenery (snow capped mountain peaks, sparkling turquoise water),food(oh my, the food), Greek people, all brought constant smiles and amazement. I loved this country and tour and want to see more!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The coastline villages and cities and the crystal clear turquoise water were my Wow moment, and am so glad it didn't just happen once but each time I came into view of the Aegean, whether dining on the water, taking the boat ride to Hydra, walking along the beaches or just seeing it in the distance."

Maria told us we'd be surprised, and she was spot on. History was amazing, as expected. But the beauty of the country, not just along the water, but in the many inland places we visited. I did not expect snow-capped mountains and acres and acres of beautiful wild flowers among the ruins. Loved all villages that I'd never heard of, and the people. Still can't keep all the ancient names/relationships/drama straight, but Maria was able to make is sound like she was talking about her neighbors.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Seeing the torch for the 1980 Winter Olympics in Athens, the location where they light the torch and the arch to the stadium in Olympia. I carried the name banner for Hungary in the opening/closing ceremonies in Lake Placid, so being where it all begins gave me chills. Loved the music/dancing night. And standing among the ruins atop Monemvasia! And the donkeys in Hydra! And everything!"

For years we traveled in Europe using RS guide books. We knew the tour philosophy and that aspect lived up to expectations. What we did not realize was just how much of a difference a RS guide could make. Maria went way beyond what we imagined a guide would be. The RS back-door approach, combined with a passionate guide turned a tour into a great experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Greece, like other countries, can, and did, provide many "wow" moments for all of us. But, for me the moment came when Maria took us to an impromptu olive oil tasting. It was the experience of enjoying an evening with our new friends, sampling the oils, and getting up close with two Greek brothers."

Very organized and informative tour. We visited remote towns and churches and ate traditional Greek meals prepared for us by the locals. Maria Sioulas, our Tour Guide, gave us an insight of everyday life in Greece. The bus was comfortable with plenty of room and our competent driver drove us around with what seemed like little effort.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I had many "wow" moments. The Acropolis, Delphi, Kastania, Nafplio, the walk Maria led from Hydra to Plakes Beach. Perhaps the favorite was visiting Kastania where we were greeted by an 88-year old nun who spoke rapid Greek and treated us as guests. After touring the small village, we enjoyed traditional Greek coffee next to another small table with local men also enjoying coffee."

I will have to find words where words are insufficient to explain the incredible experience we have just had. Our guide, Maria, made our visit to the land of myths unforgettable. Her knowledge and passion for Greece, its people, and its culture enriched our coffers and filled us with wonder. The guides at the individual sites were also incredible and I feel like I missed little yet want more! I will return to Greece!

"Many many, but to choose one then I choose Mycenae with its beauty and probably because of so many legends are tied to this era. Walking the paths it made one believe in Cyclopes... because how else could this have been built?! ;-)"
