Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2-4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2-6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2-8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Greece

At 6 p.m. we'll meet at our hotel near Athens' pedestrian-friendly Plaka neighborhood for a "Welcome to Athens" get-together. Then we'll get oriented to our neighborhood and walk to a nearby restaurant where we can get acquainted over dinner. Sleep in Athens (2 nights). No bus. Walking: light.

Day 2: Athens' Acropolis

This morning we'll hike to the top of Athens' legendary Acropolis, where we'll take a walking tour of its 2,500-year-old Golden Age temples, dominated by the dramatic Parthenon. We'll then work our way down and tour the sleek new Acropolis Museum, custom built to showcase the amazing Parthenon sculptures. Your afternoon and evening are free for exploring Athens' marketplaces – the ancient Agora and the modern Plaka's labyrinth of inviting streets, squares, shops and cafés. No bus. Walking: strenuous.

Day 3: Greek Treasures and Delphi

This morning we'll tour Athens' impressive National Archaeological Museum, home to amazingly-preserved masterpieces in marble, bronze and gold. Then we'll leave the city and drive into the rugged countryside. In a dramatic setting on the flanks of 8,000-foot Mt. Parnassus we'll enjoy the fresh air and tour the mystical ruins of Delphi. Here, 25 centuries ago, the celebrated oracle allowed mere mortals to converse with the gods. This evening we'll have dinner together and sleep in the town of Delphi (1 night). Bus: 4 hrs. Walking: strenuous.

Day 4: Peloponnese Mountains

Today we'll cross over the Gulf of Corinth to the Peloponnese Peninsula, where we'll temporarily leave our bus for a steep, scenic cog railway ride past the waterfalls and caves lining the narrow Vouraikos Gorge. From the end of the line, our bus will take us to our destination high up in the Menalon Mountains, where we'll enjoy dinner from a wood-fired oven. Sleep in or near Lagkadia (1 night). Train: 1 hr. Bus: 5 hrs. Walking: light.

Day 5: Ancient Olympia

This morning's winding mountain drive will take us to Olympia, site of the world's first Olympics, over 2,700 years ago. There we'll take a vivid walking tour of Olympia's ancient athletic venues, temples and museum, followed by lunch together. This afternoon's drive will take us along sweeping views of the Ionian Sea to the relaxed seaside village of Kardamyli, where we'll sleep (2 nights). Bus: 5 hrs. Walking: moderate.

Day 6: Seaside Kardamyli

Kardamyli is an ideal place to enjoy a "vacation from your vacation." After some orientation by your guide, the day is all yours. You might hike along the ancient cobbled paths that wind their way through the nearby hills — or just relax on the beach — and end your day with a grilled seafood dinner and a view from the little taverna you've discovered. No bus. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 7: Mani Villages

We'll follow the coast to the isolated Mani Peninsula, home to generations-long clan wars, salt-of-the-earth villages and unique pyrgospita — tower houses. If Greece had a Tombstone and an O.K. Corral, here is where they'd be. After making a few off-the-beaten-path discoveries, we'll ride on to the dramatically-set medieval town of Monemvasia, where you'll be free for dinner. Sleep in mainland Monemvasia (2 nights). Bus: 5 hrs. Walking: light.

Day 8: Medieval Monemvasia

This morning we'll cross the causeway to tackle the massive rock that shoots straight up out of the blue-green Aegean Sea. After an orientation walk around Monemvasia's cozy little Lower Town, the rest of the day is free. You can wander more of the romantic walled town or take a swim in the Aegean. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 9: Byzantine Mystras

Today we'll head up into the heart of the Peloponnese, where we'll tour the haunting ruins of the fortress town of Mystras and its still-standing group of Byzantine churches. After stopping in nearby Sparta for lunch, we'll continue north to our destination: the delightful, fortress-topped harbor town of Nafplio. We'll enjoy a Greek wine and ouzo tasting, and sleep in Nafplio (2 nights). Bus: 5 hrs. Walking: strenuous.

Day 10: Mycenae and Nafplio

After breakfast we'll take a short drive to mysterious Mycenae, the fortified city founded by Perseus a thousand years before the Parthenon was built. We'll take a walking tour through the grand Lion Gate, along the "cyclopean" walls, and into a remarkably-domed tholos tomb. Then we'll return to Nafplio for a free afternoon to explore the colorful alleyways of the Old Town, ride a boat to the little castle island in the harbor, or hike up to enjoy a Venetian fortress view. We'll regroup for dinner together this evening. Bus: 1 hr. Walking: moderate.

Day 11: Ancient Epidavros

This morning we'll drive to nearby Epidavros. Once the most famous healing center in the Mediterranean, today's star attraction is its ancient theater, large enough to accommodate 15,000 togas. We'll learn about the roots of drama here, before hopping a boat to the idyllic traffic-free island of Hydra, where we'll sleep (2 nights). Boat: ½ hr. Bus: 2 hrs. Walking: moderate.

Day 12: Island of Hydra

Your entire day and evening are free to soak up the whitewashed architecture as you wander Hydra's narrow streets and harbor promenade. You might swim at a nearby beach, hire a boat for the day, hike across the island, or try to make friends with a donkey. No bus. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 13: Return to Athens

This morning we'll take a ferry ride to Piraeus, where our bus will be waiting to take us back to our Athens hotel. Your afternoon is free to wander and shop through the Plaka, or explore other parts of this bustling city. Tonight we'll gaze at the floodlit Acropolis and enjoy a final dinner together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Opa! Sleep in Athens (1 night). Boat: 2 hrs. Bus: 1 hr. Walking: light.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. You can easily catch a cab for the airport, or to nearby Piraeus where a fleet of ferries awaits to transport those with time to even more Greek destinations. Antio!

Itinerary specifics subject to change.

Activity Level

Our tours are physically active! It’s an essential part of the Rick Steves tour experience. On our Athens & the Heart of Greece in 14 Days tour — among other things — you'll need to happily...

  1. Carry/roll your luggage over uneven pavement (several blocks possible) and up stairways to reach your hotel; then up several flights of stairs to reach your room.
  2. Be on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours, indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
  3. Sleep with street noise and no (or weak) air conditioning.
  4. Travel on a bus without a toilet (rest stops every two hours).
  5. After orientation and transportation lessons, be able to navigate towns and cities on your own.
  6. Walk up to the Acropolis (10 minutes of stairs to the base, then more stairs to the top).
  7. At the Ancient Delphi site, walk up and down a steep and slippery gravel-marble path.

Absolutely enthralled!! Everyone and each venue extra special, each in its own way!! Pleasantly and totally surprised! Enlightening!! I knew little of Greek culture except the obvious. I did watch DW, in English, over the summer and learned all the trials and tribulations of the economy. My husband wanted to go to see the big sites. I was curious about the culture!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Tzatziki!!! Enjoyed it each time served. And have made two batches since return. Friends like it. But that's a tough one. Too many favorites. My mind and spirit still there, spontaneous memories. Fish restaurants and veggie lunches. The geography, olive trees, the sea, wine, ouzo, wonderful prices. Planned to spend twice as much. Hope we helped the economy some. People wonderful. Views extraordinary. Great route planning. Would love to return, drive Mini Cooper around some of the roads!!"

The Athens and the Heart of Greece tour was an excellent experience. It was a fairly intense 14 days that presented a solid overview of Greece's history as well as insights into modern life. Ioanna, our tour guide, was very knowledgeable and treated us like best friends rather than customers. Her offer to help me arrange some transportation that I needed well after the tour ended is an indication of her helpfulness that went far beyond my expectations.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The time we spent in Olympia viewing the site of the original Olympics stands out as the highlight for me. The local guide brought the atmosphere of this ancient event to life by detailing the day to day lives of the athletes and clearly describing the facilities available to them. The Greek music and dancing night was entertaining, although I sincerely hope a smartphone video of my performing a "voluntary" dance never hits the Internet."

(This evaluation is from me and my husband, Mike Budd.) The tour was mostly well designed, and Ioanna was a wellspring of articulate knowledge about all aspects of Greece. The group was convivial and rolled with the necessary changes. Thankfully, Ioanna and Cynthia modified the Name Game. You can't know how stressed people are anticipating being put on the spot. This was a back-to-back tour with Julie and Eastern France and she, too, modified it when she saw how stressed people are.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Swimming in the beautiful waters of Kardamyli and riding on the cog railroad as we love small-gauge railways. Also, loved the Acropolis Museum, a perfect blend of archeology and architecture, very special. So glad we could bring some cash and support to some very small villages, like the tiny town with all the little churches."

This tour was a wonderful experience from the moment I signed up. The pre-planner is excellent in giving info. needed to prepare for the trip and the guidebook with maps & other info. is an excellent resource for getting around and choosing where to eat, etc. Our guide, Eoanna was beyond wonderful -- a true Greek Goddess. Her passion and knowledge of her country, made the past come alive for me. A trip of a lifetime.

This was my first tour, Rick Steves or otherwise. I did enjoy the free time this tour provided you on my own. The tour took us with great efficiency to the various parts of Greece. Still trying to decide if I like the structure of a tour or travel on our own.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite "wow" moment would be a bit different than most people. I enjoyed the people of Greece more than anything else. They were warm, gracious. One conversation in particular stands out with a woman named Georgia in Lagdia. She understood some English, did not speak it. We were in the cemetery, she thought we may have known someone there. We started walking up the hill with her. When she learned I was from Pittsburgh, she shared her doctor was either from Pittsburgh or went to school"

It was about close to being perfect as you can get in this imperfect world. Got to see the highlights of ancient Greece--and experience the people and places of modern Greece. Very good itinerary.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Getting to the Acropolis and actually seeing the Parthenon first person (I made a wood and plaster model of it in the seventh grade!). But as a student of St. Paul, getting to the Areopagus and the Agora is also in the "wow" category."

This was my first Rick Steves tour experience and it more than met my expectations. It was fun, exciting, and so well organized with an absolutely wonderful tour guide, Maria, and a fun, congenial tour family. I could not ask for a better experience. I have come away from the trip with a much better understanding of Greece and its contribution to the world!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Every day of the tour had wow moments but I think the biggest one for me was the Acropolis in Athens. We arrived there early in the day before the big tour crowds arrived which was great! It was so very exciting to walk around on the top and imagine the infamous ones of long ago who had walked the same ground."

Recipe for a once-in-a-lifetime trip: combine the beauties of Greece, its amazing history, its welcoming people, and its unbelievably good food; combine that with one spirited and knowledgeable Tour Director Maria and her skilled navigator Costa; add in fabulous local guides to bring the sites alive and a congenial group of fellow travelers; kiss the trip with some weather sent by the Greek gods; and voila, an amazing experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Just one!?! Other than my "Whoa, I'm on the Acropolis!" moment (a sentiment undoubtedly shared by many)and climbing around the intriguing Monemvasia (which, by the way, garners the award for best Hobbit doors), my favorite was the opportunity to savor a private moment, just inches away from amazing Byzantine wall decorations in a tiny Kastania chapel. I don't think I would've had that experience on any other tour."

Our first Rick Steves tour. We were so impressed with the organization of the tour, the balance of activities, and the quality of the guides. Of course Greece has so much to offer but the tour delivered these experiences in a most satisfactory and efficient way. The local guides added great perspective on some of the most amazing archaeological sites in the world and the tour included wonderful culinary experiences that we would certainly have missed on own.

"Seeing the Acropolis in Athens and being at he foot of the steps of the Parthanon was a wow experience of the first order. This was a well thought out and orchestrated tour. Adjustments were made due to weather etc, but the group was always informed ahead of time and given an explanation as to any changes. While I'm not really a morning person, I have to admit that our tour profited immensely by getting an early start and avoiding the crowds. There is something very powerful about leaving an area fully satiated as a group just enters, especially if the group is 30+ teen-agers.

Colin encouraged us to strike up a conversation with AThe beauty and unspoiled nature of Hydra! local person and this was one of the highlights of my tour.

There are not enough superlatives to describe our tour. It was simply wonderful!! Great tour leaders and local guides, great selection of places to visit, and plenty of "little" moments that really helped me understand Greece and its wonderful people. The pace of the trips is very fast and loaded with things to do, but also included plenty of time to do more, which our guide always pointed out to us, or time to relax and just enjoy the setting we were in. You tour are the BEST!

"I choose two. One was at Olympia, site of the ancient Olympics, in front of Hera's Temple where they light the flame for every Olympics. Our local guide Nicki did such an amazing job explaining it and making it come alive. It was such an experience to realize where I was standing. The other moment was in Nafplia where our guide Colin arranged for a feast at a local taverna, with music, singing, & dancing where we had the time of our life! Both amazing moments."

This tour exceeded my expectations. Colin did a great job facilitating our Greek culture and archeological experience. Ioanna added the personal Greek culture insights that really brought the Greek culture to life. Even though we spent several hours on the bus, we were always entertained by Colin, his Greek music choices and the Greek landscape. Colin did a good job introducing us to all faucets of the Greek cuisine. This was our 2nd Rick Steve's trip and it will not be our last.

"Olympia was very special due to the preservation of the statues and art work. Niki did a great job taking us back through the history of the original Olympic games. It was very special to see where the Olympic torch is lit and starts its journey across the world to the modern sites of the Olympic games. Having an opportunity to race across the original Olympic field was great!"

Wonderful tour. Tour guides, tour companions, accommodations, and sites all outstanding. Colin and Ioanna were extremely knowledgeable and well organized. The hotels were the best of the 5 tours we have been on and the operators so grateful for our business. Our travelling companions were a great pleasure to be with and everyone bonded very well. Greece has an amazing history that came alive on the tour.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Several but Olympia blew us away. The Olympic village and stadium are breattaking but standing in front of the stone rectangle where all Olympic tours are lit to start their journey to the host cities was amazing. We live in Atlanta and helped with the 1996 Olympic games so this was especially meaningful and moving to us."

This was a fantastic tour with an outstanding guide (Anastasia Gaitanou). The local guides at several locations were also very knowledgeable. The hotel accommodations were fine and the group meals were always a fun experience - even if I wasn't sure what I was eating some of the time. Certainly no one ever went away from the table hungry.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Seeing some of the ancient ruins that I had only seen in history books many, many years ago when I was in school was very eye-opening. It is hard to imagine the scale of some of those buildings, and what it must have taken to build them and do all the statues in marble or bronze is almost unimaginable. However, since I am a runner, the "wow" moment for me was running on the ancient track at the original Olympic Stadium."

I had my dream of visiting Greece more than fulfilled by this trip. We used the Rick Steves books for past trips and found the recommendations to be exactly how we like to travel. For this trip we were happy to give up the task of making all of the travel arrangements to focus on the country. The 3 things that made this trip great were Anastasia, our fellow travelers, and the itinerary. We had many unexpected events including cooking lesson, participatory greek dancing and outstanding food.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Everything at Olympia, but especially the opportunity to run at the ancient stadium. The beauty of Monemvasia and watching the sunrise behind it. Swimming in the extremely clear waters of Hydra. The theater at Epidavros and learning about the medical purposes at Epidavros. The first group dinner where we viewed from below the lit Acropolis. The City of Nafplio--loved our hotel here and climbing the 999+ steps to get to Palamidi Fortress. The national archaeological museum in Athens."

"In Kardamyli there was a happy hour. After many had retired, a few of us sat around with Anastasia talking about Greek politics and exchanging jokes. I was delighted with our tour. We had a fantastic guide. The itinerary was well planned (varied and fascinating). The pace was humane and provided sufficient downtime along the way. The folks on the tour with us were also wonderful: experienced travelers, funny, easy going. Every day provided delightful surprises. The trip was a very good investment. Thanks for all the work that went into planning a trip that seemed so smooth and seamless.

"There were many marvelous moments, but I suppose the one that stood out for me was seeing the Theater of Dionysus from atop the Acropolis. Realizing that this was the site where drama began - where Sophocles and Euripides plays were first performed. Anastasia really made Greece come alive for us! Her depth of knowledge and her delightful and respectful ways of communicating enhanced our understanding of ancient and modern Greece. They shared their knowledge in easy-to-understand ways, with a keen sense of humor to keep things lively. The group was congenial, and we look forward to extending friendships.

"There are two wows for me: understanding modern Greece and her people in the context of a long, tumultuous and important history. Greece has a history that very few countries have, and as an American, I'm jealous. Greeks also have mythology, and it has influenced their lives. Anastasia is an accomplished storyteller, showing how myths are a part of Greek culture."

I knew Greece had financial problems, and was dealing with an influx of refugees; and I knew "ancient" really meant ancient in Greece; and I expected a lot of ruins and temples. What I was surprised by was the terrain - the mountains all over the country - and the cats! Anastasia has the perfect personality and sense of humor for an exceptional tour guide. She brought Greece to life with stories and myths and her bubbly talks, not to mention the Ouzo quizzes.

"Our wow moments always involve the great accommodations and local tour guides. We were also surprised by the group toasting us on our 39th anniversary and having a cake - that was above and beyond. The tour guide, Maria was fabulous. She was knowledgeable about all facets of Greek life from birth to death and all of the tour destinations. She went way out of her way to accommodate people, to make sure that they were comfortable and that our questions were answered. Her charisma was infectious and we felt especially welcomed by the vendors in every location. This was the first time we had been on a tour and we were very happy and glad we chose the Rick Steves guided tour.

We had never done a guided tour before, and we had some concerns about how "the group" would operate, and how we'd fit in, but those disappeared very quickly. Maria, Pat and George (bus driver) were excellent, prepared and sensitive to the needs of all of the members. I especially liked the range of experiences, from the lofty (archeological) to the mundane (a Greek truck stop, where we saw some of the migrants coming in from Turkey and heading toward Northern Europe).

Favorite "WOW" moment

"In Lagadia, we went off on a trail above the commercial section of the town (marked trail, heading toward the town spring), and we came upon a returning herd of goats, bells bangin', all heading toward their evening meal. Greece is a country I've wanted to visit since I was in grade school, reading my parent's National Geographic mags. Actually seeing the places where the ancient Greeks lived was exciting for me. We've been on a number of tours before, but this seemed like an especially cohesive, fun-loving group.

I enjoyed the tour very much. The guides, including the local ones, were excellent. I learned a lot about both ancient and modern Greece. I saw sights that will stay with me forever. Certainly was rainier than expected, but we didn't miss seeing any of the major sights.

This was a great tour and I found Greece and the Greek people to be lovely. I went not really knowing much more than what I'd read about in books or seen on television and found there to be so much that I didn't know. I really enjoyed going into the country, seeing that Greece is so much more than islands and the acropolis. I saw so much that I'd never necessarily heard of before and it made me want to know more.

"I don't have one "wow" moment unless I can count the entire trip. There were just so many neat things to see and do and learn that I can't pick just one, though running at Olympia and clapping at Epidavros were pretty neat."

This tour exceeded my expectations... The tour had the perfect balance of archaeological sites and modern day towns and villages of Greece. Colin, our guide, was very knowledgeable about the history of and the economic and political turmoils facing the country. Despite the extremely hot weather, the itinerary, the food, and the people in the group all made this an unforgettable experience!

"There were so many great moments and experiences during this tour that it was very difficult to pick a favorite "wow" moment. What had impressed me in particular was how advanced scientifically the ancient Greeks were as exhibited by the magnificent structures they had built such as the Parthenon, the Temple of Apollo in Delphi, and the Temple of Zeus in Olympia."

"I really liked the town of Delphi and the ruins. There was just something awe inspiring looking down from the side of the hill into the valley of olive trees. Just gave me chills. This was a near-perfect tour. Colin was an excellent guide. I was anticipating this survey and trying to think of a few "constructive" comments but offer few as the itinerary, pace, lodging, food, local guides and overall logistics were all excellent. The site visits were spectacular (an archaeologists dream come true)and the amount of time at each site was just about perfect. And all the local guides were super! Overall I am very happy with all aspects of this trip.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"While probably not what you are looking for my big "wow" moment was seeing the reality of the economic crisis facing Greece. As we traveled through the country we observed one closed factory after another. In the non-tourist towns three our of ever four storefronts were empty. Very sad. In terms of the sties we visited almost all were truly "wow" moments for me. I also enjoyed our stops in waterfront towns and access to beautiful beaches. On this trio there were many "wow" moments."

The tour was much better than expected. With all of the recent economic news and turmoil in the Greece political situation, I had reservations about my choice. Both my wife and I are so happy that we went. This being our second RS tour, it met and exceeding all expectations. Tour sites, hotel accommodations, meals, bus transportation, and most importantly, the people, were wonderful. The local people were wonderful, especially if you tried to greet them in Greek. Food prices were so reasonable.

"Our "wow" moment was the RS guide Colin. His knowledge and enthusiasm was beyond believe. He brought so much to the tour, including his wonderful organizational skills and ability to share his knowledge with everyone. We always had help with where to dine on our own, shop, and navigate the local villages. Seeing historical sites over 3500 years old was amazing. Highly recommend this tour to everyone."

I had a great time on my tour of Greece with Colin. All of the hotels were great with fantastic breakfasts. We visited a variety of archeological sites, museums, and places of interest. "It's hard to choose any one thing. I think the most beautiful landscape was Delphi. To actually see the stone slab that the Oracles sat over to breath the vapors was priceless. This was our first tour and it was a great experience. The hotels were all very comfortable, the food was great, and everything was well organized. The museums and archeological sites were all interesting and really helped us get some insight into Greek history and culture. This was my second Rick Steve Tour (did best of Italy in 2013 with Sarah) and reinforced what a fantastic tour your company puts on. While we did get to see the big historical sites, I really liked that we got out in the country and went to a lot of interesting places I never would have even known about had I gone on my own. This was our first time traveling with a tour group and, to our surprise, being part of an organized tour enriched our travel experience tremendously. This was the first Rick Steves tour and overall great experience. I will be doing it again soon. There was a good balance between history and optional physical activities, such as swimming and hiking.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We have done many trips on our own, using Rick Steves guide books. I was struck though by how much fun it was to share the experience with my 25 or so fellow travelers. It was fun to hear about the lives of our guide and driver who live in Greece and to hear their views on the economy, politics, and culture."

The Greece tour has become one of my favorites thus far of the nine I've done. Greece far exceeded my expectations...the people were warm and friendly and very helpful. I was impressed with the young children's knowledge of English. We traveled with a great group of fellow travelers which made the trip more enjoyable. Most of the group had completed multiple RS tours so they understood what it took to make the tour pleasurable for everyone. The local guides were among the best we've had.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Faye, our Athens local guide, brought history to life in a way I've never experienced before...I'll never look at a clay pot the same way again. The reactions of the people when you took the time to learn a few words of their language. The sun rise from our hotel room in Monemvasia and the sunset from the harbor in Hydra. Hiking, swimming, and the scenery straight out of travel magazines. Angelos' catch phrase "too easy" made me smile. Yogurt with honey!"

The entire tour was fabulous, thanks to the excellence, talents and "Greekiness" of Angelos, our guide. I visited many parts of Greece years ago (mainland and islands)--I wanted to go back. I particularly wanted to see the Peloponnese, which I had never visited. I wanted a Greek experience in the broadest and fullest sense and I got just that! It was a very happy trip. The accomodation, the innovative "surprise " entertainment venues, the really nice bus, the superb bus driver-epharisto poli!

This trip was fabulous. It was our fourth Rick Steves trip and the best so far. All our other tours were good, but the guide on our Greek tour was so exceptional that the group really clicked from the beginning and grew stronger as the tour went on.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The final group dinner in Athens, at the top of a chic hotel, with a night-time view of the illuminated Acropolis, was truly amazing. The food was wonderful, the wine flowed non-stop, and the conversation sizzled. Our guide, Angelos, surprised us by picking up an accordian and playing a medley of snappy tunes. Thanks to Angelos and everybody in the group for such a memorable last night together!"

This was a fantastic tour! I was sad when it ended. Our guide and our tour group were amazing and we all became friends right from the start. The places we went and the things we saw exceeded my expectations. There was a good balance between seeing the sights with the group and our free time. I looked forward to every day and what was in store for us. The bus rides were fun and our bus driver, Giorgio, was amazing! I would love to go to Greece again, and even on this tour again!

"There are so many! Just seeing all the sights that I had heard of and seen In pictures and thinking, "I'm actually here!" Being up in the mountains at Delphi and taking in the beautiful scenery and fantastic ruins, being in Olympia and running where the first Olympians ran, being up at the Acropolis and then seeing it all lit up at night, all the quaint beach towns and beautiful clear turquoise water, Hydra, and I could go on and on! Wonderful blend of ancient sites (Bronze Age, Classical, Byzantine) and picturesque villages. We visited interesting places that we never would have found on our own. We had a knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and patient Greek guide plus an expert Greek driver. The meals supplied by the tour were excellent with an abundance of delicious appetizers, main dishes, and desserts. We did a lot of walking up and down hills, yet it was never too much.

As always on Rick Steves tours, the group was a mix of interesting people ready for exploration. Our guide, Angelos, made this tour a lot of fun while being informative. The tour was a good mix of ruins sites, museums, villages and beaches. The little stops along the way made the tour! The accommodations were much nicer than I expected (based on past RS tours). The hoteliers were friendly and fun in the smaller towns (i.e. everywhere but Athens).

"The farewell dinner Angelos arranged at a rooftop restaurant with a stunning view of the Acropolis at sunset was a WOW! This tour, as compared with others RS tours I've been on, had more "little wows" that I really enjoyed. My wife and I had a great trip. Saw what we wanted to, did what we wanted to, made new friends, enjoyed ourselves morning, noon and night. Had lots of character added from our guide and bus driver. Got helpful hints on activities and places either as a group or one on one. Enjoyed all of the local guides, very pleasant, fun and knowledgeable. Enjoyed the hotels and restaurants, especially the family owned and out of the way ones. The hotel in Napflio and the 3 brothers running it were great.

Angelos set the atmosphere for a relaxed though strenuous travel through Greece. From the outset our group was friendly and warm, making it a point to get to know everyone; there were no 'clicks' or small groups that 'hung out together'. Angelos is knowledgeable and offered insight to Greece's history, politics and what it's like to live in Greece today, contending with the economy and the EU.

"The farewell dinner; dining with a rooftop view of the Acropolis where our tour began. We watched a beautiful sunset and were so busy posing for photos with the wonderful backdrop that many of us could not enjoy the delicious meal that was served. When the time came to say goodbye we lingered over hugs and parting farewells not wanting to leave. Oh, and I must mention our guide's serenading us on the accordion. Angelos' talent is astounding!"

The tour exceeded my expectations. I usually travel as an independent traveler, but chose to take this tour because of the lack of extensive rail options, the limited bus options, and the desire to not have to deal with driving a rental car with great differences in language and alphabet from English. The tour leader, the bus driver, and all the other tour members made the experience very special and I believe that we all had a great time.

This was truly an outstanding tour...our 14th travel experience with RS and it ranks as one of the very best. Blending museum experiences with visits to archaeological sites (Acropolis, Olympia, Delphi, Mystras, Mycenae, and Epidavros) made history come alive. In visiting an archaeological site and trying to make sense of historical remains, it's so important to have had the guidance and knowledge that Colin and the local guides provided. Everything about this tour was exceptional!

My first trip to Europe, to help celebrate my brother and sister in laws 30th anniversary. Everything exceeded my expectations. If you want to see a country in 14 days, this is the way to go. It was well planned out and every stop was effortless. It left me yearning for more travel. I would of skipped Sparta, a dirty city with no interests to me. This was our seventh Rick Steves tour and it was one of the best - a perfect combination of history, culture, art and relaxation, led by an outstanding guide. The first few days were rather exhausting since we had to get up early to make the most of our time in Athens. There was a lot of walking, climbing and standing - especially visiting two museums. Fortunately, the trip became more relaxing once we were out of the big city. There seemed to be more free time on this tour which we appreciated.

Well planned out travel mostly through rural Greece. Very well thought out itinerary incorporating local holidays to minimize lost time and experiences. Tour leader and his assistant were exceptionally well versed in the nuances of the country and knew the local overnight locations like the back of their collective hands. We were initially hesitant to do tours out of concern that we would have no free time to explore on our own, but this tour gave us a good balance of guided tours/walks, and time to do such exploration on our own and with congenial companions. This was my 2nd Rick Steves tour and it far surpassed any expectations I had. I felt that not only did we experience the "obvious" attractions in Greece, we went to so many other absolutely beautiful, enriching places - especially all the coastal towns. The scenic mountainous terrain of the Peloponnese (alive with wildflowers this time of year - BIG BONUS!) was definitely a surprise!

This was my first Rick Steves tour and I now understand why some in our group taken multiple tours. The program for our two weeks in Greece was superbly planned to show us the highlights of Greece, help us gain a fuller understanding of the country and the people, and to help us feel comfortable exploring on our own wherever we went. We thoroughly enjoyed this tour, our 7th with ETBD. The people, the history, the countryside, the food, our guide, and all our tour members made for a truly enjoyable two weeks. To stay away from visiting Greece because of their economic problems is not a wise decision. My biggest impression of the Greeks is that, despite their problems (and they've had many throughout history), they will survive. Greece is one of the most enjoyable places I've visited. Did I mention the food?

Favorite "WOW" moment

This tour was fantastic. As a veteran of 10 Rick Steves tours now, over 20 years, I have found them to be consistently wonderful experiences, but this one was a particular joy. Our guide David was spectacular. The tour group was a complete pleasure to travel with, everyone kind and companionable. Our visits to museums and major sites such as the Acropolis were led by excellent local guides. In the countryside of the Peloponnese, surprises unfolded. And Hydra provided a great island experience.

Our tour experience was outstanding in every regard. The itinerary balanced the Athens city experience with the rustic charm and historical interest of a part of the world off the radar of too many travelers. Logistically, every part of the trip went off like clockwork, just like the other two Rick Steves tours we have been a part of. Best of all, David provided knowledgeable, enthusiastic leadership, allowing the group to bond early and form real friendships.

"My extended "wow" moment was our time on the Mani Peninsula. In particular, the walk above the town of Kardamyli, through Old Kardamyli to the church of Agia Sophia, was a stand-out experience. It combined great natural beauty with history lessons about the survival of the Maniots over the centuries. Further off, the nearly hidden town of Kastania is a place of hospitality and rugged charm. I have taken many Rick Steves tours, and this was one of the very best. I knew Greece would be beautiful and its ancient history facinating, but this tour far exceeded my expectations. Much of this was due to our excellent guide, David. Our driver, Georgios, was also fantastic. It was excellent in every way. It was our first tour. One plus I hadn't counted on was how nice it was to be travelling with so many pleasant and interesting tour members. That made it even more special.

Greece was a wonderful place to visit. I enjoyed the quaint towns that the tour stopped in and stayed in. They were places I probably wouldn't visit on my own. David was a wealth of knowledge to help me to experience the true Greece.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I had a few "WOW" moments. One was when the guide, George in Mystras chanted in Greek in the ruins of a church on our Easter Sunday. Another was the amazing oceans views as we hiked along the coast in several cities with beautiful wild flowers blooming everywhere and the sun shining. The oranges in Nafplio, the greek yogurt and honey and the bread!"

We had great adventures. We are better educated travellers. We ate too much delicious food. We made friends. I took 2000+ photos that tell a wonderful tale.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There wasn't just one, but in general our most memorable moments were when my husband and I hiked off the beaten track, like up to a monastery in Hydra and a church on a hill in Kardamyli. We were not expecting the tremendous show of spring flowers, a big bonus, nor the chill in the air, but who cares...it was perfect hiking weather :-)"

What can I say other that it was wonderful tour experience. Mr. Willett set the tone with his relaxed manner, and this particular group was just wonderful. Everybody worked together to make it a pleasant experience. Mr. Willett was very knowledgeable about every section of Greece that we drove through, or stayed in. He made everyone feel comfortable on the tour, especially me.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We thought the whole tour was a WOW moment, Carolyn really loved Delphi and I loved the day we took the narrow gauge railroad up the Vouraikos Gorge to Kalavryta and visited the museum which was very moving. I had never heard of that terrible day for that town and it's people and I'm glad our guide David gave us a chance to visit and see this museum. After that we went to lunch at a trout farm which was outstanding."

My overall experience was good. Athens is a little dirty. Greece is in a depressed economy and in places it really shows. Outside of Athens the countryside is very pretty and the people are friendly. Greece is one big photo op with all the old villages the ruins and especially this time of year when the wild flowers are in bloom.

"On Good Friday we were in an old chapel in a tiny village....For those who wanted to, we lit candles and stood in a circle in this small chapel...since we were traveling and unable to be in church this weekend, this short time in this chapel in the quietness of the moment, with the candles lit, was very special to me."

Couldn't possibly do this in 500 characters. The whole trip was truly magical. David made Western Civilization come alive; best tour guide ever, as were the guides at the various sites we visited. Best part was the great group of people on the trip. Before this trip, I didn't like guided tours--have traveled all over Europe with just the Rick Steves books--but this experience made me a believer. Can't wait for my next Rick Steves adventure in the fall. What great friends I made.

The experience exceeded my expectations of visiting ancient sites for a couple of hours and then moving on to the next. I got more for my money than I paid. I was apprehensive about taking a group tour. There was no need for apprehension. This tour could not have been any better. I not only saw ancient sights but I feel I truly got to experience Greek culture. David made this tour. David was charming, a character, a motivator, a professor, historian, culture consultant, an ambassador and...tour guide extraordinaire! David made my trip. Also great accommodations, food and new friends.

"Touring Mystra on Easter was joyful. At the end of the tour, we were allowed to view wares made by the nuns. We could buy items which helped nuns with income and to support some local families. I looked at a couple of items and I left a donation. Our tour guide that day tapped me on the back after I had left and gave me a gift. It was an item made by the nuns. He told me the sister wanted me to have the item. I ran back, gave her my hand and she hugged me hard and long. Emotional for me."

This was a tour of a lifetime. From start to finish I enjoyed every aspect of Athens and the Heart of Greece. The ancient ruins, museums, historic landmarks, local guides, small villages, boutique hotels, meals, springtime wildflowers, members of our group, and of course our tour guide, David, made this a spectacular ETBD experience. Anyone considering a tour of Greece MUST do it with Rick Steves.

This beautiful seaside village had it all... a lovely town, ancient ruins, hiking trails, friendly locals, and a gorgeous beachfront.I felt like I had arrived in Greece. Possibly the best trip of our lives because of a top-notched guide and a varied and important itinerary. Accommodations, food, bus, driver& stops were excellent & group fellow members were congenial, interesting & fun. The unexpected cold, wet and blustery weather was the only aspect of the trip that was a disappointment, which of course no one could control, but our guide modified plans when able, and the group handled it well.

"Each town/city had been [INVALID]ed for special and different importance-perhaps history, geography,or possible experiences for our group. While iconic sites & beautiful museums with wonderful pieces fulfilled my dreams, I liked the more "authentic" small towns and villages & spontaneous activities that involved Greek people's lives, work & culture- a tiny family restaurants with great food, walks in local gardens and among wild flowers, olive curing, Greek dancing, a tiny Byzantine church, & more."

Our guide provided just that: guidance throughout the tour that made it the most memorable tour that we have ever taken. He was informative and insightful in terms of our personal interests and individual needs. More importantly, he knows the language, history, and culture of Greece because he has lived there. He is in touch with individual Greeks who provide more insight and services as well.

We enjoyed exploring Europe with Colin and Angelos. Our tour group consisted of many people who'd been on previous RS tours and we bonded very well. We shared a wonderful virus with each other, so we all bonded with a common nasty cough. Feeling crummy wasn't the best way to experience Greece, but we all managed to push through it. Our local tour guides were all knowledgeable and personable.

Excellent experience again with Rick Steves tour. Colin Clement is very knowledgeable on Greece and I enjoyed listening to him share his knowledge. He has this tour down and his experience and confidence made this tour a good experience. Angelos is full of energy and enthusiasm that is contagious. This well-designed tour should be on everyone's bucket list. We were exposed in proper doses not only to Greece's ancient history, but also to its current political and economic challenges. From this tour, we gained a fuller understanding of the beginning of civilization and how Greece's ancient history still influences our lives today.

This tour was perfect[INVALID]except maybe for the nasty cold that struck folks. Even THAT didn't dampen our spirits or our tour. Colin is a phenomenal guide. His knowledge of history and how all the pieces fit together is amazing. His understanding of people and his ability to "read" a group of travelers is beyond compare. The tour itself intertwined the ancient with the current, and left me feeling that the people who walked Greece thousands of years ago weren't all that different from us today.

We had a wonderful trip touring Athens and the Heart of Greece. I did not realize how rugged the countryside is until we took this tour. Fantastic experience. Tour was well formulated and executed. Though lead guide, Colin, was ill during part of the trip, he kept up a "stiff upper lip" and consistently delivered an approachable historical backdrop for visited sites. Excellent local guides would then "fill in the details". Fellow tour participants were a congenial crew and the professionalism of our coach driver, George, was reassuring. Native apprentice guide, Angelos, provided a unique "Greek" perspective.

We had a great time and found Colin and Angelos very knowledgeable and enjoyable to listen to and be with. Colin, especially, was impressive in the range and detail of his knowledge and presentation of all things Greek. We had some rain the first week and it was a bit cooler than I had thought it would be, but the second week was glorious weather, just in time for Monemvasia and Hydra. Loved our little primer of Greek phrases and greetings, which we used more as time went on.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The history and just the incredible "ancientness" of everything we saw, layer upon layer of civilization and yet "nothing new under the sun" with clever kitchen appliances and children's toys displayed in the museums alongside the beautiful pottery. Our Rick Steve's trip to Greece exceeded my expectations. Our guide was outstanding in every way. The country is beautiful and the people are very friendly. The tour was an overall success despite some challenging circumstances. The weather was not optimal, most of the group caught colds, and one member had a serious medical issue.
