Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Greece

At 6 p.m. we'll meet at our hotel near Athens' pedestrian-friendly Plaka neighborhood for a "Welcome to Athens" meeting. Then we'll get oriented to our neighborhood and walk to a nearby restaurant where we can get acquainted over dinner. Sleep in Athens (2 nights). No bus. Walking: light.

Day 2: Athens' Acropolis

This morning we'll hike to the top of Athens' legendary Acropolis, where we'll take a walking tour of its 2,500-year-old Golden Age temples, dominated by the dramatic Parthenon. We'll then work our way down and tour the sleek new Acropolis Museum, custom built to showcase the amazing Parthenon sculptures. Your afternoon and evening are free for exploring Athens' marketplaces — the ancient Agora and the modern Plaka's labyrinth of inviting streets, squares, shops, and cafés. No bus. Walking: strenuous.

Day 3: Greek Treasures and Delphi

This morning we'll tour Athens' impressive National Archaeological Museum, home to amazingly preserved masterpieces in marble, bronze, and gold. Then we'll leave the city and drive into the rugged countryside. In a dramatic setting on the flanks of 8,000-foot Mt. Parnassus we'll enjoy the fresh air and tour the mystical ruins of Delphi. Here, 25 centuries ago, the celebrated oracle allowed mere mortals to converse with the gods. This evening we'll have dinner together and sleep in the town of Delphi (1 night). Bus: 4 hours. Walking: strenuous.

Day 4: Peloponnese Mountains

Today we'll cross over the Gulf of Corinth to the Peloponnese, where we'll temporarily leave our bus for a steep, scenic cog railway ride past the waterfalls and caves lining the narrow Vouraikos Gorge. At a riverside café in the mountain village of Planitero, we will enjoy a lunch of freshly caught trout and other Greek specialties before our bus takes us to our destination high up in the Menalon Mountains. Tonight we will enjoy dinner together. Sleep in or near Lagkadia (1 night). Train: 1 hour. Bus: 5 hours. Walking: light.

Day 5: Ancient Olympia

This morning's winding mountain drive will take us to Olympia, site of the world's first Olympics, over 2,700 years ago. There we'll take a vivid walking tour of Olympia's ancient athletic venues, temples, and museum, followed by lunch together. This afternoon's drive will take us along sweeping views of the Ionian Sea to a relaxed seaside village on the Mani Peninsula, where we'll sleep (2 nights). Bus: 5 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 6: Seaside Vacation

The Mani is an ideal place to enjoy a "vacation from your vacation." After some orientation by your guide, the day is all yours. You might hike along the ancient cobbled paths that wind their way through the nearby hills — or just relax on the beach — and end your day with a grilled seafood dinner and a view from the little taverna you've discovered. No bus. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 7: Mani Villages

We'll follow the coast to the isolated Mani Peninsula, home to generations-long clan wars, salt-of-the-earth villages, and unique pyrgospita — tower houses. If Greece had a Tombstone and an O.K. Corral, here is where they'd be. We will enjoy lunch together, and after making a few off-the-beaten-path discoveries, we'll ride on to the dramatically set medieval town of Monemvasia, where you'll be free for dinner. Sleep in mainland Monemvasia (2 nights). Bus: 5 hours. Walking: light.

Day 8: Medieval Monemvasia

This morning we'll cross the causeway to tackle the massive rock that shoots straight up out of the blue-green Aegean Sea. After an orientation walk around Monemvasia's cozy little Lower Town, the rest of the afternoon is free. You can wander more of the romantic walled town or take a swim in the Aegean. Those who want a workout can hike to the very top of the rock. You will be rewarded with sweeping Aegean views and a chance to explore the ruins of the Upper Town — a living museum of Byzantine, Ottoman, and Venetian history. This evening we'll enjoy a cooking demonstration, followed by dinner together. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 9: Byzantine Mystras

Today we'll head up into the heart of the Peloponnese, where we'll tour the haunting ruins of the fortress town of Mystras and its still-standing group of Byzantine churches. After stopping in nearby Sparta for lunch, we'll continue north to our destination: the delightful, fortress-topped harbor town of Nafplio. We'll enjoy a Greek wine and ouzo tasting, and sleep in Nafplio (2 nights). Bus: 5 hours. Walking: strenuous.

Day 10: Mycenae and Nafplio

After breakfast we'll take a short drive to mysterious Mycenae, the fortified city founded by Perseus a thousand years before the Parthenon was built. We'll take a walking tour through the grand Lion Gate, along the "cyclopean" walls, and into a remarkably domed tholos tomb. Then we'll return to Nafplio for a free afternoon to explore the colorful alleyways of the Old Town, ride a boat to the little castle island in the harbor, or hike up to enjoy a Venetian fortress view. We'll regroup for dinner together this evening. Bus: 1 hour. Walking: moderate.

Day 11: Ancient Epidavros

This morning we'll drive to nearby Epidavros. Once the most famous healing center in the Mediterranean, today's star attraction is its ancient theater, large enough to accommodate 14,000. We'll learn about the roots of medicine and drama here, before hopping a boat to the idyllic traffic-free island of Hydra, where we'll sleep (2 nights). Boat: ½ hour. Bus: 2 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 12: Island of Hydra

Your entire day is free to soak up the whitewashed architecture as you wander Hydra's narrow streets and harbor promenade. You might swim at a nearby beach, hike across the island, or try to make friends with a donkey. We will cap our island vacation with a relaxing sunset happy hour. No bus. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 13: Return to Athens

This morning we'll take a ferry ride to Piraeus, where our bus will be waiting to take us back to our Athens hotel. Your afternoon is free to wander and shop through the Plaka, or explore other parts of this bustling city. Tonight we'll gaze at the floodlit Acropolis and enjoy a final dinner together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Opa! Sleep in Athens (1 night). Boat: 2 hours. Bus: 1 hour. Walking: light.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. You can easily catch a cab for the airport, or to nearby Piraeus where a fleet of ferries awaits to transport those with time to even more Greek destinations. Antio!

Itinerary specifics subject to change.

Physical Demands

Our tours are physically active! It's an essential part of the Rick Steves tour experience. On our Athens & the Heart of Greece in 14 Days tour — among other things — you'll need to happily…

  1. Carry/roll your luggage over uneven pavement (possibly several blocks) and up stairways to reach your hotel, then up several flights of stairs to reach your room.
  2. Be on your feet, walking and standing, for up to three hours, indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
  3. Sleep with street noise and no (or weak) air conditioning.
  4. Travel on a bus without a toilet (rest stops every two hours).
  5. After orientation and transportation lessons, be able to navigate towns and cities on your own.
  6. Hike over steep, slippery, uneven terrain at several ancient sites, including 200 stairs to the top of the Acropolis.

Our tour guide, Filippos, was incredible! His knowledge of the areas we visited, combined with his insight into the cultural differences and similarities of our countries made the experience so interesting and more easy to understand. He shared his childhood stories of Greece with humor and wonderful storytelling skill. Each day was a journey that I could not have imagined taking, had it not been for Filippos expert guidance and intellect. Every stop was perfect!

"Difficult to pick out just one! Being a witness to the historical elements of the tours was a great experience. The beauty of the regions and the small villages with personal attention given to incredible dinners truly gave me memories that will be cherished. More than once, I was overcome with emotion at the beauty of the harbor towns and scenic views. I would also like to commend our bus driver, Kostos. His skilled driving and personal character contributed much to the experiences."

This was an excellent trip! It contained the right balance of travel, tour and free times. In addition to the places that every traveler should see in Greece, our guide took us to small towns and out of the way sites that I would otherwise not have seen. My wife and I are experienced travelers and usually research and plan our own trips, but we are very glad that we selected this Rick Steve's tour. A large part of the success of this tour was attributable to our excellent guide, Filippos.

"1.Delphi's remote location near the top of a mountain, looking out to the Gulf of Corinth, and its religious significance gave our visit a mystical aspect. Discussing the rites and prophesies of the Oracle of Apollo with our excellent local guide, Faye, while looking at the remains of the Temple of Apollo was a memorable moment. 2.Disembarking in the port of Hydra, an island with no motorized vehicles, after the bustle of Athens and Naphlio, was a welcomed step back to a more tranquil time."

Good guide. Too many one night stays. Saw really cool things. Hotels must get American coffee right. Maybe some classes for them. Hotel staff were very accommodating in 50 percent of the hotels. 50 percent surly or irritated. I know Greece is a struggling 2.5 world country. I get the tough times they have had and are still having. But the people that you throw so much money at over there should really be falling over themselves to accommodate. Would not recommend this tour.

It was absolutely wonderful. The three best things about this tour were the selection of the itinerary, our marvelous tour guide Anastasia and a great bunch of fellow travelers. The itinerary provided us with change in pace, scenery and activities which always kept us fresh and ready to meet the next day with enthusiasm. Anastasia possessed all of the attributes that make a top notch tour guide, especially, in compassion and warmth. Our other tour members made everything more enjoyable.

Good guide, nice people. I do think that Lagadia was a bad stop for overnight. There was absolutely nothing to do there. It would have been much better to stop at Olympia, even though it was 2 hrs. more in the bus. At least Olympia had shops, restaurants, and other places to walk and explore. Lagadia was a real loser. Our experience was overall good. The hotel in Kardamali was a bit far from town as was the one in Minemvasia. We would have liked another night in Napfoli.

The [INVALID]ion of sites, time engineering (group/travel/individual exploration)was ideal for us. We found the physical activity to be quite fine:distance, stairs, etc. The food at all sites ranged from very acceptable to simply excellent although I have reached my short term dose of traditional Greek salads. The quantity of these was overwhelming. Maria enlivened this tour!! She combined enthusiasm, knowledge depth, personal stories, mythology with her infectious delight. All local guides excelled!!

Was such a fun experience and a beautiful place. Also loved Monemvasia, Hydra, Nafplio, the mountain towns. Too much to really narrow down. Could write about special "wow" moments in each place!!"

The ancient myths that Danae wove throughout the journey punctuated the mysteries of this magical place called Greece. Every day one senses the secrets that have enchanted people throughout time in this most beautiful and natural world. Even in teeming Athens I looked up to see the Parthenon and remembered that this was the place where western culture began. How great to share the delicious food, amazing scenery, exhilarating walks, and daily discoveries with a group of wonderful tour mates.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Music from the children's choir, George's chanting, Greek bouzouki, Barry&Nancy, and Danae's beautiful son singing a folk song were all highlights. The Ancient Greek sculpture was my most wow moment and it lasted for almost the entire trip. The Charioteer of Delphi, Poseidon, Boy on a Horse, and Maidens from the Acropolis were some of the wows for me."

I was hesitant about traveling in a tour group but my hesitation has been put to rest as this tour was excellent. A large reason for this was our guide, Danae, but the overall organization laid the foundation for quality. Danae made the history and culture of Greece come alive and I left feeling like I really had a glance into the real Greece.

Our tour of Greece was extraordinary and unlike anything we had done before. The country is gorgeous - rocky mountains, land filled with olive trees as far as your eye can see, turquoise seas, landscapes filled with colorful flowers and fruit trees, etc. The food also blew me away - so many fresh flavors and varieties of scrumptious food. Overall, it was a trip of a lifetime, which we will never forget.

My husband I had been to Greece twice previously and finished this first tour with a new understanding and excitement for Greece. A day guide we had hired in Crete before the tour asked us about our tour itinerary and responded enthusiastically that we were seeing the absolute most essential sights of Greece. Beyond these, it was the warmth of the people - from our dear guide and guides to tour associates, to people on the street, and our fellow travelers - that made the trip special!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"While the ancient sites in Athens (especially at night), Delphi, Olympia (what fun to run in the stadium!) and Mycenae were all wonderfully impressive; medieval Monemvasia enchanting, and Byzantine Mystras instructive and beautiful (especially memorable was George's chanting); the "wow" moments occurred throughout the many mountainous twists and turns of the Peloponnese, in particular the spectacular coastal scenery of the Mani. Perhaps also the energetic and engaging folk dancing in Nafplio!"

We have almost all of Rick Steves DVD's and we like very much his attitude of meeting the locals, learning their customs and pretty well avoiding the tourist traps. Unfortunately on this trip we did not see Greece, except for the 2500 year old version. all else was staged for tourism. Our "free time" was in towns with a hardware store, a small shop and nothing much to do. Hotels were ok as we expected. No one told us that they will be located as much as half a mile UPHILL

"Wow is when we went back to the airport. We are well traveled. We have been on all continents + the north pole. We have slept in palaces and small country farms. Not available on this trip."

This is my second RS Tour and I will tell you that the guides are the single most critical part to a successful tour and RS nails it again in spades with our guide Apostolos. His depth of cultural and historic understanding and bringing it all to life throughout each day of tour was excellent. Another wonderful experience with Rick Steve's tours..The people you meet are as such an essential element of every tour. We had another great group of folks to share our travels through Greece. Maria was a wonderful guide and managed throughout to provide the best information, experience, and knowledge of the locales that would seem possible. Our driver Christos throughout the tour was a great asset and they made a very super team. Every day of this trip exceptional as well as memorable .

When deciding on our first Rick Steves journey, I read the reviews on line. One person said they were glad to not be the CEO of their own trip. That proved to be so true for us as well. After years of planning our own, I am delighted to let someone with more expertise and experience do the work for me...and for a better price. Top that off with the BEST guide possible in Maria ... this was an absolutely PERFECT trip!

This was our 11th RS tour and will definitely go down as one of our favorites. My wife and I had read that Greece was a beautiful country but we had no idea just how beautiful it would prove to be. This tour provided such a spectacular mix of history, great food and beautiful views it is still difficult to believe just how much we fit in to this two week tour! The people of Greece were all so very kind and charming. Our tour group was simply terrific as was our tour guide Filippos!

The tour of Greece was fabulous. Our guide, Filippos, was outstanding. He was interesting, knowledgeable, funny, and professional. Great tour of Greece. I'd been in Monemvasia in 1986 after an accident, so it was magical being back again. I loved staying in the other coastal towns, as well as seeing the countryside and mountains. The a/c bus was a life-saver. There were a couple of hotels in which the beds felt like concrete. Seriously. Felt like I was doing jail-time. Otherwise, totally enjoyed the tour and am ready to go back tomorrow. Will definitely tell others of my great experience!

"TWO! 1. First evening, I followed the Matre d' to my table at the Athens rooftop Grande Bretagne, looked up and had to grab my chair, as I gasped in wonder and awe, looking at the Acropolis in all its glory, and began tearing up. The meal was as spectacular as the view. 2. Walking down to Sanctuary of Athena in Delphi, I felt the energy of the mystical area of the past and present, at peace with the world. This would have been a wonderful trip, except that my husband and I were sick (bronchitis-type illness)the entire time. That made the early mornings very difficult and the overall trip exhausting. The worst part was that most of the rest of the travelers tended to keep their distance. This we could understand, but still put a damper on the usual interactions with our fellow tour mates, which is part of the fun. By the end of the trip, we were doing a bit better, so not so much of being pariahs.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The main "WOW" moments were seeing the ruins going back to B.C. with the starting blocks for the foot races still in place. Also the beauty of the Greek mountains as we wound through them in contrast to the drier, flatter coastal areas. Our final dinner was wonderful, though just when we were finishing up and still visiting, our 2 hours were up, so they were literally telling us we had to leave and turning the lights on and off. It was rather an abrupt ending to the journey."

It was outstanding and very well run. I liked the mix of sights and free time. The only change to make would be to have more time at Delphi. Visiting there after a museum tour in the morning just didn't leave enough time. Maybe start the tour earlier the first day and do the museum then. Otherwise it was a good flow. This tour exceeded my expectations. My husband and I taught school in Germany years ago and travel outside the US frequently. We put our own trips together, so going on a two week tour was new for us. I was impressed with the quality and expansiveness of the itinerary, our tour leader, the expert guides, the meals, accommodations, and the extras such as the cooking class, dancing, wine tasting, etc. I loved the days off to plan our own adventures and the active, physical level of the trip.

Ohmigosh. My tenth RS tour and my hands-down favorite. So satisfying and engaging on every level:beautiful country, good food, nice people, and every day a new piece of history/culture/philosophy to ponder. I wanted it to never end.

"Delphi! One of my goals for this trip was to understand ancient Greek religious beliefs better, and standing in that temple, looking out over the gorge, thinking about what we'd learned about the oracle and the quest for self-understanding and balance between Apollonian ideals and Dionysian disorder....I got it! I really did! A close second was in Olympia, where it dawned on me that Greeks were absolute geniuses in using religous observance to strengthen community cohesion."

I have always wanted to go to Greece. Some people I know had told me about Rick Steves and the tours he does. I am so happy they told me about it! I didn't know what to expect but it turned out to be one of the best experiences I have ever had. Our group was wonderful and our guide Filippos was so great! He was so informative and added sweet personal stories about his life growing up in Greece that just made it even more special. I will treasure the people we met and the memories we made.

"My "wow" moment I think was on our first day of travel on the bus. I didn't realize how mountainous Greece was. Everywhere you looked it seemed like a postcard picture, so beautiful! I also realized I get a little motion sickness due to all the hairpin turns the bus had to make heading into these different places. We had a fantastic bus driver that maneuvered the bus in ways that I didn't know a bus could be maneuvered. He was awesome!"

The tour guides (overall and site specific) were fantastic. They made the history of Greece come alive, and make me want to learn so much more! And take a tour of Northern Greece (when will you offer that?). Most of the hotels were wonderful and the food was definitely great and in abundance. I enjoyed all of the other travelers. We had a great group that really got to know each other well.

"Olympia was overwhelming in a great way. The site guide did a great job of telling us about it, and imagine what that would be like. Overall the views everywhere were spectacular. Maybe another highlight was sitting on our balcony on the last evening seeing the Acropolis lit in the background. So amazing!"

My wife and I are fairly experienced travelers. I've lived in three different countries and have travelled to well over 100. We've done a fair bit of group travel too... with operators like TCS (private jet), Travcoa, and Backroads (premium level). This was our first Rick Steves trip. And we understood that RS's position in the market is a bit more budget-oriented; we went in a shade leery on the that score. However, we came out, EXTREMELY pleasantly surprised. Bravo Rick Steves & Co!

"You've clearly got a proven model. We found the balance of group meals versus lunches or dinners "on your own" to be just right. We found the mix of structured time (in museums and archeological sites) and "on your own" time to be just perfect. And though we dreaded the amount of bus travel in the itinerary, the way the bus legs were broken up by short stops at interesting bakeries (and the like) made it all work just fine."

My tour experience was very positive. Our guide was excellent, had a great knowledge of Greece, added humor to his dialogues, and was very organized. I did not know what to expect from Greece so every day was a new adventure. Considering the roads we drove over, I am glad we had such a great and experienced bus driver. This was my 5th Rick Steves' tour and they just keep getting better. What an amazing trip. The hotels were are good to wonderful and the food, which was more than plentiful, was delicious. I thought it would take a forklift to get me on the plane to get home. Greece has so much history, a lot of which I knew about, and much I did not. And some was so heartbreaking it was difficult to hear about. But, we were able to see the Greek people at their open-hearted best.

Anastasia, our tour guide, was wonderful. She is very knowledgeable, organized, helpful and friendly.

Tour guide Anastasia and bus driver Costas were a great team throughout. Competent, careful, and fun to be with. I'm a historian and retired museum director, and I was awed by Anastasia's thorough knowledge of both Greek and regional history (enough so that she diplomatically corrected misstatements of local guides--after the fact) and Greek mythology. There's no way that a newbie to Greece could put together this comprehensive itinerary, find the great small hotels, drive those roads...

"The sparkling, modern museums with state-of-the-art exhibits. One in particular that I visited during free time was the Cycladic Art Museum in Athens. A stunningly large collection of the rarest of the rare early art objects. I particularly enjoyed the car-free island of Hydra and the Greco Hotel's beautiful garden patio."

I enjoyed traveling with a group of compatible, friendly, and helpful people. I appreciated the knowledge and resourcefulness of our guide Anastasia, and especially loved that she connected the classical Greek myths most of us knew to physical geographical places. (I now know where to find the doorway to Hades should I ever want to visit.) I was not prepared for the beauty of Greece, the picturesque landscapes, and I was delighted to be able to experience so much of it.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I have read and enjoyed the writings of the classical writer Plutarch for many years, and I was thrilled to visit Delphi, where Plutarch served as a priest. And I could never properly express my gratitude to local guide, Penny, who when she learned how much I admired Plutarch, led me past museum officials anxious to close up for the day to a where a bust of Plutarch stood, and pointed out his name written on the base. I was powerfully moved by that experience."

This was our 5th RS tour and it was wonderful. Greece is an amazing and beautiful country. It was like walking in a legend because the ancient world is still there. Anastasia was a great guide. Great tour! Friends recommended we take this tour and we were not disappointed. I love to take pictures on these tours and this tour was a gold mine for picture taking (I took around 1500). I'll put them in a digital picture frame for now and will pick out a few favorites later to edit and possibly frame. I got some very nice ones in Kardamyli where we found a nice restaurant by the sea.

This was my first Rick Steeves tour and I loved it! My fellow travellers were interesting and friendly and the sort of people that are a pleasure to meet. Everyone was positive and upbeat even when things (weather and whatnot) were not perfect. They stood by your pledge not to be complainers! Anastasia was very well informed and her talks on the bus never failed to captivate us.As a single traveller, I worried that I would be alone on free days but there was lots of friendly company!

Greece is definitely a beautiful and mountainous country. There is so much history to see and experience, it is hard to do it in one trip. The food was phenomenal, the people were warm and welcoming and were interested to talk about where we from. Hard to expand on "Outstanding" for tour and Guide! It was our first and only of four tours which started and ended in the city we flew in and out of. Great tour. The history and scenery all laid out in a way that brought new insight and beauty with each day. But when the ancient dust settles travel is about the people. I learned so much while on this tour. Greek history is fascinating, with Greek mythology, and the influence of the individual city-states, the Ottoman Empire, the Romans, the Venetians, the Byzantines. So much of world history and language is influenced by Greek roots, and the guides were gifted in highlighting ancient Greek influences into today's culture and language. What an incredible trip - it was the best ever! Christos, our bus driver, was part of our temporary family and such a safe driver. Hydra, Delphi and the Olympic Stadium were favorite stops.

The tour was excellent and exceeded our expectations. This was our third Rick Steves tour and we had high expectations. Our schedule was changed so we went to the National Archeology museum on our last day. This should be a permanent change. Having the museum last pulled together all the places we visited. If we had seen the museum first the exhibits would not have had the full impact. My Fitbit tells me I averaged over 13,000 steps a day. A recommendation for walking sticks would be in order.

Another great RS Tour in the books (#8). Our guide Filippos is one of the best. His vast knowledge of Greece was complimented by his tales of current-day Greece and entertaining personal-interest stories that made you laugh. I felt that I was successfully immersed in Greece, both ancient and modern. Our superb tour leader made the history and ancient sites come alive and connected them to Greece's modern history and current situation. I am not sure that I had 'expectations' of the tour experience, but nevertheless it was a wonderful trip. It is so hard to believe that we walked in the same locales that the ancient Mycenae or Olympian athletes or Oracle devotees. I was simply amazed to stand on Mars Hill where St Paul spoke to the ancient Athenians. The people are incredibly friendly and the time that we were away from the group was never difficult because folks were always eager to assist if needed.

"I can't wait to look at the photos that we took so that I can be reminded of all that we did, it was really an impressive trip around Greece. I completed my journal entries trying to not leave out any of the many experiences and sights. If pushed to one wow moment, it would have to be Delphi & our local guide Penny."

I've always wanted to travel to Greece to learn more deeply about the origins of our Westen civilization. That is what attracted me to this particular Rick Steves tour and it did not disappoint. Having the opportunity to see such historic ancient sites, experience the culture and people of this amazing country, and to learn first hand of the recent challenges of the economic and refugee crises broadened my knowledge and context of the nation and its place in history and the world.

The first 2 days were fast paced, but the remainder of the tour was paced more to my liking. We had ample free time that allowed us to make friends within our group or explore. I love RS tours-for history, foods, customs and the people. Most of all our guide (Ioanna) made this the best tour ever. The cooking class, the folk dancing, the local guides really provide us with a better understanding of the country and its people. I'm glad I was able to walk on all kinds of terrain & do stairs.

"Olympia and watching my husband and fellow tour member running the Olympic track! It was incredible to be standing on these grounds where the Walls of Shame and Walls of Fame were. The history was so interesting, especially hearing about the requirements of an Olympic athlete. Nikki, the local guide was outstanding. Hydra was also great!"

From our first night dinner at the Restaurant of the Gods (such a great name for a Greek restaurant with delicious food and generous portions) I knew this was going to be a great trip. Our tour guide Ioanna was so warm, welcoming and fun ad she set the tone for the entire tour. She took us to amazing paces I'm sure we would never found on any other tour and certainly not on our own. I will never forget the culture, the people, the food, the history, and the countryside of Greece

The overall experience was stellar. Danae's stories, humor and wonderful personality made every day a treat. Our tour group was made up of the most friendly, fun, compatible people we have ever traveled with. Rick Steves travelers are usually easy to be with. This group was exceptional. We miss them all.

"Walking up the hill to see the theater in Epidavros we could hear a men's choir singing sacred music. It was loud and clear as the acoustics are perfect. This is one of many WOWs that will stay with us. It might be more accurate to say that the only not WOW moments were when we were asleep."

My wife and I arrived three days in advance, and we were glad we did. It allowed us to get over the jet lag from a long flight. Everything was well organized, scheduled and exicuted, which provided for a very enjoyable, informative and educational tour. Our tour guide, Danae set a very high standard for our tour with deep knowledge and a great personality. Our bus driver, Stavros was exceptionally safe, professional and courteous at all times.

Greece was amazing and our guide Daenae was just as amazing. Actually, we feel very blessed to have her as our guide. I don't usually write much on these types of requests for feedback- but I would be remise not to tell your how wonderful she is!! She's mature and kind, and is such a wonderful storyteller!! She made much of the Greek history come alive and it was fun to learn about the history and culture of the Greek people. She works well with this age group and is very patient.

"My husband and I talked about this and it was the first RS's trip we took that we didn't have a favorite area. I think this in part was that we enjoyed the variety and the pace was good. Some people on our trip grumbled that there was too much museum time on the first leg of the northern trip. However, I would argue that was necessary to better appreciate what we saw latter in the trip."

This was a fabulous tour. The group we traveled with was very sociable and everyone interacted well. All were well informed, experienced travelers and we all looked out for one another. The balance between guided tours and self-directed time was perfect. I cannot say enough about out Tour Guide, Danae. She was a great teacher, personable, and helpful at all times.

EXCELLENT tour guide!! Extremely capable bus driver! A diverse, but amazingly compatible tour group. Soooo many sights; soooo many memories! Danae went out to her way to work with my gluten and caw-dairy food allergies; a couple times she made sure the hotels carried a couple breakfast products just for me, and she always made sure during our group dinners that the chefs had dishes that I could eat. This will be my all-time favorite culinary tour.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were many; I cannot pick just one. What we saw and learned in the museums and the site-visits has altered my sense of what "old" is (after many sites from B.C. I found myself writing off the Byzantine period because it was too modern). From our Italy trip I went to Greece asking "why did the Romans--who I have long admired--copy the Greeks?" Now I understand. As a Christian, I grew in my understanding of, and appreciation for, the Orthodox tradition."

Pre-Tour Planning

We've put together some specific information on what you should know about this tour before you go. You'll also find more general information about "Getting Ready for Your Tour" on our Tour FAQ.

Trip Resources

Learn more about Greece: Check out a collection of Rick's TV shows, radio interviews, and articles, plus recommended books and movies.

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email. About one month prior to the tour departure, we'll email you directions on how to get from the airport to your first tour hotel, as well as the complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour.

Transportation

Many tour members arrive a day or two before the tour begins — and those who don't, wish they had. This allows you ample time to get over jet lag and make the most of the first few days of the tour.

Athens is a hub for travel in southeastern Europe. For information about flying within Europe, ask your travel agent or check Rick's list of European budget airlines.

Read Rick's train travel and rail pass tips to decide if your travel plans merit a rail pass.

For specific details about traveling in the Greek islands, please see your Greece guidebook and these suggested resources:

If you have additional European travel or tour questions, contact the Tour Department at 425-608-4217 or email tour@ricksteves.com.

Sightseeing on Your Own

If you arrive in Athens before your tour begins, use the Rick Steves Greece guidebook to get oriented. Ride the public transportation, try out a few words of Greek, and get over your jet lag with lots of fresh air and exercise.

Here are a few suggestions for sightseeing in Athens that we do not do as a group: Goulandris Museum of Cycladic & Ancient Greek Art, National Historical Museum, Benaki Museum, Temple of Olympian Zeus, National Gardens.

Packing

Greece is rocky! We recommend you bring a pair of comfortable walking shoes with soles offering good traction, and you may wish to pack a swimsuit, waterproof sandals, and a lightweight microfiber towel.

For more advice on what (and what not!) to pack, see Rick's packing tips.

Special packing note: We use an audioguide system for many of our sightseeing and museum tours. If you wear a hearing aid, we strongly recommend bringing headphones that go over your ears to allow you to fully enjoy these tours.
