Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Greece

At 6 p.m. we'll meet at our hotel near Athens' pedestrian-friendly Plaka neighborhood for a "Welcome to Athens" meeting. Then we'll get oriented to our neighborhood and walk to a nearby restaurant where we can get acquainted over dinner. Sleep in Athens (2 nights). No bus. Walking: light.

Day 2: Athens' Acropolis

This morning we'll hike to the top of Athens' legendary Acropolis, where we'll take a walking tour of its 2,500-year-old Golden Age temples, dominated by the dramatic Parthenon. We'll then work our way down and tour the sleek new Acropolis Museum, custom built to showcase the amazing Parthenon sculptures. Your afternoon and evening are free for exploring Athens' marketplaces — the ancient Agora and the modern Plaka's labyrinth of inviting streets, squares, shops, and cafés. No bus. Walking: strenuous.

Day 3: Greek Treasures and Delphi

This morning we'll tour Athens' impressive National Archaeological Museum, home to amazingly preserved masterpieces in marble, bronze, and gold. Then we'll leave the city and drive into the rugged countryside. In a dramatic setting on the flanks of 8,000-foot Mt. Parnassus we'll enjoy the fresh air and tour the mystical ruins of Delphi. Here, 25 centuries ago, the celebrated oracle allowed mere mortals to converse with the gods. This evening we'll have dinner together and sleep in the town of Delphi (1 night). Bus: 4 hours. Walking: strenuous.

Day 4: Peloponnese Mountains

Today we'll cross over the Gulf of Corinth to the Peloponnese, where we'll temporarily leave our bus for a steep, scenic cog railway ride past the waterfalls and caves lining the narrow Vouraikos Gorge. At a riverside café in the mountain village of Planitero, we will enjoy a lunch of freshly caught trout and other Greek specialties before our bus takes us to our destination high up in the Menalon Mountains. Tonight we will enjoy dinner together. Sleep in or near Lagkadia (1 night). Train: 1 hour. Bus: 5 hours. Walking: light.

Day 5: Ancient Olympia

This morning's winding mountain drive will take us to Olympia, site of the world's first Olympics, over 2,700 years ago. There we'll take a vivid walking tour of Olympia's ancient athletic venues, temples, and museum, followed by lunch together. This afternoon's drive will take us along sweeping views of the Ionian Sea to a relaxed seaside village on the Mani Peninsula, where we'll sleep (2 nights). Bus: 5 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 6: Seaside Vacation

The Mani is an ideal place to enjoy a "vacation from your vacation." After some orientation by your guide, the day is all yours. You might hike along the ancient cobbled paths that wind their way through the nearby hills — or just relax on the beach — and end your day with a grilled seafood dinner and a view from the little taverna you've discovered. No bus. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 7: Mani Villages

We'll follow the coast to the isolated Mani Peninsula, home to generations-long clan wars, salt-of-the-earth villages, and unique pyrgospita — tower houses. If Greece had a Tombstone and an O.K. Corral, here is where they'd be. We will enjoy lunch together, and after making a few off-the-beaten-path discoveries, we'll ride on to the dramatically set medieval town of Monemvasia, where you'll be free for dinner. Sleep in mainland Monemvasia (2 nights). Bus: 5 hours. Walking: light.

Day 8: Medieval Monemvasia

This morning we'll cross the causeway to tackle the massive rock that shoots straight up out of the blue-green Aegean Sea. After an orientation walk around Monemvasia's cozy little Lower Town, the rest of the afternoon is free. You can wander more of the romantic walled town or take a swim in the Aegean. Those who want a workout can hike to the very top of the rock. You will be rewarded with sweeping Aegean views and a chance to explore the ruins of the Upper Town — a living museum of Byzantine, Ottoman, and Venetian history. This evening we'll enjoy a cooking demonstration, followed by dinner together. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 9: Byzantine Mystras

Today we'll head up into the heart of the Peloponnese, where we'll tour the haunting ruins of the fortress town of Mystras and its still-standing group of Byzantine churches. After stopping in nearby Sparta for lunch, we'll continue north to our destination: the delightful, fortress-topped harbor town of Nafplio. We'll enjoy a Greek wine and ouzo tasting, and sleep in Nafplio (2 nights). Bus: 5 hours. Walking: strenuous.

Day 10: Mycenae and Nafplio

After breakfast we'll take a short drive to mysterious Mycenae, the fortified city founded by Perseus a thousand years before the Parthenon was built. We'll take a walking tour through the grand Lion Gate, along the "cyclopean" walls, and into a remarkably domed tholos tomb. Then we'll return to Nafplio for a free afternoon to explore the colorful alleyways of the Old Town, ride a boat to the little castle island in the harbor, or hike up to enjoy a Venetian fortress view. We'll regroup for dinner together this evening. Bus: 1 hour. Walking: moderate.

Day 11: Ancient Epidavros

This morning we'll drive to nearby Epidavros. Once the most famous healing center in the Mediterranean, today's star attraction is its ancient theater, large enough to accommodate 14,000. We'll learn about the roots of medicine and drama here, before hopping a boat to the idyllic traffic-free island of Hydra, where we'll sleep (2 nights). Boat: ½ hour. Bus: 2 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 12: Island of Hydra

Your entire day is free to soak up the whitewashed architecture as you wander Hydra's narrow streets and harbor promenade. You might swim at a nearby beach, hike across the island, or try to make friends with a donkey. We will cap our island vacation with a relaxing sunset happy hour. No bus. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 13: Return to Athens

This morning we'll take a ferry ride to Piraeus, where our bus will be waiting to take us back to our Athens hotel. Your afternoon is free to wander and shop through the Plaka, or explore other parts of this bustling city. Tonight we'll gaze at the floodlit Acropolis and enjoy a final dinner together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Opa! Sleep in Athens (1 night). Boat: 2 hours. Bus: 1 hour. Walking: light.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. You can easily catch a cab for the airport, or to nearby Piraeus where a fleet of ferries awaits to transport those with time to even more Greek destinations. Antio!

Itinerary specifics subject to change.

Physical Demands

Our tours are physically active! It's an essential part of the Rick Steves tour experience. On our Athens & the Heart of Greece in 14 Days tour — among other things — you'll need to happily…

  1. Carry/roll your luggage over uneven pavement (possibly several blocks) and up stairways to reach your hotel, then up several flights of stairs to reach your room.
  2. Be on your feet, walking and standing, for up to three hours, indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
  3. Sleep with street noise and no (or weak) air conditioning.
  4. Travel on a bus without a toilet (rest stops every two hours).
  5. After orientation and transportation lessons, be able to navigate towns and cities on your own.
  6. Hike over steep, slippery, uneven terrain at several ancient sites, including 200 stairs to the top of the Acropolis.

This was our fourth RS tour, and was possibly my favourite. It combined the right amount of history, including visits to archeological sites and museums, plus time to explore interesting small towns. We also got to enjoy incredible food and experience unique cultural events. The local shopkeepers and hoteliers were welcoming, helpful and charming. All in all the perfect combination in which to thoroughly enjoy and appreciate the Greek experience!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It is incredibly hard to choose just one. A number of us in our tour group, including Colin our guide, hiked up to the top of the Rock in Monemvasia. Once at the top, the view of the town and surrounding area was breathtaking. All of us who made it to the top posed for a picture to remember our experience. If I could be allowed a second choice, it would be the evening with a wonderful dinner, 2 singers serenading us, and traditional Greek dancers performing for us!"

This tour was wonderfully varied, allowing me to see a side of Greece which I admittedly was ignorant. In true Rick Steves style, we visited the major sites with the assistance of wonderful local docents after our guide, Colin, had provided in depth background. And we usually visited these sites when crowds were small which made the experience all the more meaningful. But this tour also took us into the very rugged mountains and rural sea side. Beautiful places.

"Hard to sort out just one. Amazing to experience OLD ruins (Mycenae), Olympic stadium complex, incredible frescoes (where you would never expect them), the acoustics of the theater in Epidavros, etc. I loved our "free" day on the lovely island of Hydra. Enjoyed the music and enthusiasm of the musicians and dancers at our meal in Nafplio."

Overall, this was one of my favorite Rick Steves tours. Other than Athens, I had not been to any of the locations on this tour. I find Greece to be magical. I loved the hiking and walking and how active this tour was. Our group was very congenial.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite wow moment was at the Acropolis in Athens. I was in Athens in 1972 and again in 2003. I wanted to recreate the photographic moments from those past years in front of the temples and was able to do so. I also loved visiting Delphi's Sanctuary of Athena Pronea, which I've seen photos of many times. On past Rick Steves tours, a "wow" moment was created as part of our tour i.e. a surprise entertainer or a surprise carriage ride. None of that was part of this tour this time."

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Because I am a theatre buff, my favorite moment was the theatre of Dionysus at Epidavros. However, our guide in Athens was truly a delight and pointed out many things at the Archaeological museum we could never have figured out on our own. Also, the Greek music and dancing were loads of fun."

Tour guide (Colin), bus driver Cristos, tour itinerary and hotels were all outstanding. I have to admit, I'm still suffering from information overload, but I'm really glad I went on this trip. My hiking friends are still in awe over some of the trails I conquered as well as the views from both the cities we visited and the countryside.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Kardimyli, Monemvasia and Nafplio all impressed me in so many different ways. I did not expect Kardimyli to have such an incredible variety of hiking trails nor did I expect Monemvasia to have such amazing views from their various ruins near Agia Sophia. Nafplio was another underrated city, with incredible eateries and hiking opportunities."

Excellent trip, this being my 6th trip; exactly what one would expect from a Rick Steves Tour. Our guide, Colin was simply superb and bus driver Christos was very good. The trip was extremely educational and I truly appreciated the wide variety of cultural experiences we had. We truly experienced Greece and the various places we visited- "through the back door," avoiding crowds and tourists, hobnobbing with the locals and almost feeling like a local by the end of trip.

My overall tour experience was excellent. The sites we saw exceeded my expectations. Our tour guide, Colin, provided us a wealth of information about Greece both past & present. Our bus driver, Christos drove us along beautiful scenic narrow roads. Our group had wonderful chemistry that started immediately from the moment we met. The food was hardy & full of flavour. Our accommodations were comfortable with great service. All these factors, along with perfect weather, made this trip special.

"My WOW moment was the hike to the top of the "Rock" at Monemvasia. After touring the Lower town in the morning we ventured up the well worn switchbacks to the Agia Sophia and onto the ruins of Upper Town. The trail was rocky and at times challenging but when we reached the Acropolis, the view of the town of Gafyra and the mainland's coastline was breathtaking. I truly enjoyed this moment & sharing this experience with others on our tour who completed the hike with us."

This was our 7th RS tour, so needless to say we buy into the RS concept. When this tour says it is strenuous, believe it! Now maybe it's because we have "aged" since our 1st tour, but we were exhausted most days. That's not a bad thing, but it does give us pause as to what we are able to continue to do with regards to RS tours! It was a wonderful "bucket list" tour, a wonderful group of people including new and "old" friends, Maria was awesome & we were truly glad to have experienced Greece.

This was a thorough tour that introduced us to the best of everything Greece has to offer. The rating was correct - it was a challenge. But all the leg-work was worth it. The Greek people were gracious and accommodating. The food was wonderful, and the scenery was fantastic. And we'll never forget all the ancient wonders. As always, all aspects of this tour exceeded our expectations. This was #7 - and we will keep on traveling!

This was my 12th tour and lived up to all of the previous ones. The group was one of the best and Maria was also one of the best guides. Very involved and helpful. Lots of extras that were fun and not something I would have done on my own. I thought we could have spent another day in Hydra. Cute town. This was my 6th Rick Steves tour and one of the best! The fellow tour members were exceptional and our guide Maria was outstanding and great fun! I loved the diversity of experiences. The hotels were lovely, and the sites visited were so very interesting! One word of warning--this tour is strenuous! Lots of up and down stairs, which can be challenging for aging knees. A hiking pole is essential! Fortunately I had one. One suggestion I have is to spend an additional night on Hydra. More later.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Hydra! What a magical place to spend some time! I would have liked an additional night there to just soak up the ambiance of island Greece! Not exactly sure what I would eliminate to make that possible, but at the end of this tour, we were so in need of rest and relaxation. It was really hard to leave Hydra after only one full day there, as the tour got there in late afternoon and left really early in the morning. The optional walk over the mountain from Plaka Beach was especially wonderful!"

Even though one has seen a million pictures of the Parthenon to see it in person was just stupendous, it is simply amazing. From the very beginning welcome reception to the farewell dinner, my tour experience was wonderful! Not only was our tour guide terrific, the specialists we met at the different sites were knowledgeable and personable. The members of the tour group were watchful of each other and helpful in times of difficulty.

"I had 14 days of "wow" moments. The most scenic was Monemvasia and the Hotel Panorama. The most touching was Kalavrita or "Town of the Widows". Most enjoyable was visiting with the people of Castano. Enjoyed the tour of Churches. Most of all, I loved Apostolos' stories of growing up in Greece and his immersion in the Greek Culture."

This was our 2nd Rick Steves tour after completing Best of Italy just last year. I have been waiting 40 years to get to Greece and it was well worth the wait. Our tour guide, Apostolos, was outstanding and added a very personal & emotional touch to the sites, history and everyday lifestyle of past & present day Greeks. We had contemplated touring Greece on our own but are so glad we didn't. Apostolos and the local tour guides added so much more to our experience. We highly recommend this tour!

"There were so many "wow" moments but clearly the biggest was also the first. Having arrived at our Athens hotel late after a long day of travel the hotel staff checked us in quickly. We dropped off our bags and headed up to the new roof-top restaurant for a relaxing dinner. As we stepped off the elevator, the Acropolis & Parthenon were lit up against the night sky, forever emblazoned on my memory. I had arrived. I was in Greece, the cradle of our civilization!"

Although I do not like to use superlative words, I cannot think of a word other than OUTSTANDING that makes justice to the whole experience. Everything was excellent: 1)Greece: its people, landscapes, culture and history, the food, CATS (I am an animal lover)! 2) The tour itself: the organization, the main guide and the local guides, the driver, the out of the main road places visited, the amount of free time as compared with scheduled time, the hotels and restaurants.

"This question is very difficult to answer because there were several: * Acropolis at night, * First views from our hotels' windows (in almost all places)upon arrival, * Views from and food at the restaurants, * Hydra, an island with no cars but donkeys and friendly cats, * Learning about the experience of the people in Kalavryta, * Monemvasia, * Kardamily, * Kastania and old lady, * Our group's experience, it brought almost a family feeling. Apostolos had a lot to do about it."

It was wonderful to learn about Greek history and culture through the eye's of it's people. The people I encountered were warm and welcoming and the food was fantastic! The archeological sites were at times larger than life and overwhelming in scale; amazing! It was a great tour and met all my expectations.

"My favorite "wow" moment was seeing the Parthenon atop the Acropolis at night. It happened while the group was walking to dinner on the first night together. We were all walking and talking trying to get to know each other better, when I turned a corner and happened to look up. There it was lit up like a beacon. My mind was blown and it became real that I was actually in Greece."

Danae, the best tour guide - knowledgeable and engaging. Panos the bus driver was extremely skilled on the narrow mountain roads - a nice man. The people in the group - all very nice, laid back. Smaller group size and more room on the bus - good.Liked vacation from our vacation in Kardimyli. The tour eliminated the hassle of dealing with transfers, crowds in the museums, obtaining tickets... 14 days about 2 days too long. Bored at the end. Learned so much!!!!!

We had a great time in Greece with Anastasia and our tour mates. We learned a lot about the culture and the history of this amazing country. We were always amazed at the "ancientness" of it all. When you hear dates like 1600 BC all you can think of is "Wow!" Most of the hotel accommodations were good, however some of the beds/mattresses were lacking. We enjoyed all the group dining experiences. The food was great, however it was always too much. It felt a little gluttonous at times.

What a wonderful adventure! This was my third RS trip (France in 2010 and Italy in 2013), and I knew it would be terrific. What we learned and experienced in the 2 weeks was fantastic, without slighting the past 2 tours we've taken or the guides, this was our best. As advertised, the tour is physically demanding based on the number of stops and the mountainous terrain of Greece. This was a wonderful trip in part due to fearless leader Apostolos and the members of this tour group. Apostolos handled all the challenges of Zorba the cyclone, power outages, itinerary changes and hotel moves, 3 days of wet feet dyed blue with efficiency and with a great sense of humor. He was on top of each crisis and helped us all cope! This was a return to Greece after 51 years for us and Apostolos' enthusiasm for his country and his knowledge made it special

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Seeing the things we saw 51 years ago and how much better the old sites have been taken care of and preserved. At the Parthenon, Delphi, Olympia, sites are better maintained, preserved and museums have better laid out information to visitors. We were not able to walk into for example the temple of Apollo in Delphi as we once had but it was okay with us. We are happy for Greece that so much preservation and protection for their sites has happened. It brought tears to our eyes."

The pride and enthusiasm of our guide Apostolos for Greece was infectious. It is clear that he loves his country and his job as a guide. He educated us on the history, culture, food and what life is really like in Greece, all with a sense of humor. He had friendships with many of the people in the places we visited and it seemed like everyone went out of their way to show us authenticity and graciousness. The local guides were also excellent.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I loved all the small towns, Monemvasia, Delphi, Lagkadia, Nafplio and driving thru the beautiful mountains and olive groves of the Peloponnese. My favorite though was Hydra, so incredibly beautiful. I was also amazed at how during a historic cyclone, Apostolos kept us safe and motivated to explore. I also loved the cooking classes and learning how to make Baklava, Moussaka, tzatzikii despite the late night power outage during dinner!"

This was our first time back to Greece in 50 years. We could not find the hotel in Athens we stayed in then but walking the streets we found the people were still as friendly, the store owners still hawking their wares and we could still find a bargain. The Parthenon is still wonderful although we could no longer sit around its columns. Still a great variety of food and drink. We were a bit surprised at the amount of graffiti. We hope to return on our own and go a bit slower this time.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Parthenon, Erechtheion & Plaka. The new museum in Delphi (Charioteer). Acres more restored in Olympia. Loved small towns on the Peloponnese & train. Favorite wow was in Monemvasia & the Hotel Panorama. Had a wonderful cooking lesson & dinner of the items made. Then the lights went out, for the rest of the night. RS thumb flashlights helped us thru. AM breakfast cooked on gas burners. We had survived "Zorba" the cyclone. High winds, rain & soaked shoes for 4 days. Wonderful hosts!"

I love archeology,we saw a lot, with good explanations. The Athens museums a bit rushed, but we saw before. An extra day in Delphi would be nice for a slower pace, and walk through the grove at bottom, etc. The first few days were fast paced. We had a long ride, so resting in Karimylli was wonderful. We swam. great Beach. Hurricane winds an no power exciting in Monemvassia. Cooking fun Nafplio great despite rain. Extra activities worked out well. Hydra glorious Neighborhood Athens excellen

Great mix of history blended with modern Greek culture. We go on these tours to get to those special "off the beaten path" places as well as to see the famous ruins and landmarks. Apostolos is a terrific guide - he kept us thoroughly entertained with his stories on our bus rides and he gave us a lot of guidance for free time. The local guides were all excellent. We loved the small villages - Kastania and its locals and Kalavryta - we hadn't heard its story before - among others.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Medicane Zorba for sure - It was completely unexpected because we thought we were going to sunny hot Greece. We were blown around on Monemvasia with an accompanying power failure at our hotel; torrential rain in Nafplio with rivers of water pouring down any and all slopes and a cancelled ferry the day we were to travel to Hydra. Fortunately, we were able to get there the following day and the sun was out once again - it was magical!"

I have taken other RS tours in the past, and this one was definitely very different. Much more academic, and a bit less cultural. Also, the various places that we stayed/visited were mainly very very small villages with few amenities. Unfortunately, the portion of the tour I was most looking forward to -- the excursion to Hydra -- had to be canceled due to weather and the boats not running. Colin, our tour guide, did a good job of scrambling and finding us other accomodations.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I was pretty wowed by Monemvassia. I wish that the description of the tour had suggested hiking boots, over sturdy walking shoes, as I was unable to participate in the hike to the top, as footing was very treacherous all over Greece, and I had already fallen once before."

This was my first Rick Steves' tour, in fact my first any kind of tour and my first visit to Europe. My anticipation level was pretty high and I was not disappointed. Second only to seeing Greece was our tour guide Colin who was absolutely fantastic. To say he is knowledgeable is an understatement. His insights and daily comments really tied the trip together; and he has a Scottish sense of humor, too! The other guides we has were also very good. The accommodations were better than anticipated

"I am a bit of a finicky eater. I was worried that I would not like the Greek food. But I really tried to keep an open mind (and palate) and almost without exception, the food was outstanding. I had lamb five times ... each prepared differently. Each was better than the next. And most of the Greek wine was good, too. I tried things that I never dreamed I would eat. Some were better than others, but overall, very good."

This tour was my first chance to visit Europe, and it did not disappoint. Maria was an amazing guide she had a great sense of humor, the patience of a saint, and an amazing knack for telling story's and conveying history. I really enjoyed this tour and I'm glad that I did it. I think that the biggest attraction that was not covered by the tour was the Agora in Athens. I was going to do it the day after our tour ended but we got stuck on Hydra for an extra day. A very well-organized and full tour, filled with the sorts of experience and learning experiences I was hoping for. As you know, this was not an uncomplicated tour, inasmuch as the weather caused a delay in our return to Athens. My wife and I thoroughly enjoy the Athens and the Heart of Greece tour on many levels: sights seen, places visited, tour leader's gifts, and our group of travelers. While I eagerly looked forward to the well-known sights/sites (Acropolis, museum, Delphi, Olympia, etc.), what I had not expected was the joy we found in visiting less well-known places in the Peloponnese. Our group was diverse in age (a plus) and coalesced very quickly. They were a joy. Maria, our guide, was wonderful.

This was my favorite of all Rick Steve's tours thus far. We have done France and Italy in the past. The value of this tour seemed to surpass (it may be because it's been 3 years since our last RS tour) the others with the number of meals, sites, villages, churches, and events. The beauty of the country often brought me to tears as the many vistas and the sea are so stunning to behold. The people of Greece are kind, welcoming, and gladly speak English.

This was our third RS Tour and they keep improving, we had an outstanding time. It is well worth the money, this trip seemed to have even more dinners and lunches included. We intend to go next year to Sicily. At the end of our tour we got stuck in Hydra an extra day due to a major storm the shut down all the ferries. Wonderful tour, excellent local guides and Danae was a delight; she added so much to the trip with her local knowledge, recommendations, and personality. Your tours are really "dialed-in" to what we wanted; not just seeing incredible sights but learning the history, staying in the local family run hotels, participating in local events, and a perfect ratio of structured and free time. The tour was probably our best Rick Steves tour so far and that is saying a lot! Overall fantastic! Maria and her associate guides provided ancient as well as the current history of Greece. The selection of sites was diverse, and the interim stops were relaxing. On several of our prior RS tours we ventured across different countries. Both this one and that of Italy kept us local. This tour was focused on the variety of southerly Greece and not the northern. The individual day guides were also quite good. Really enjoyed the cooking class; Renna was wonderful. One oil tasting would have been enough. Trip to Vemetian fortress was a waste of time and money. Meals and rooms were great, other than a few small showers. Hydra was excellent; really gl

I enjoyed the tour as I have always wanted to see the Acropolis, Parthenon and other antiquities in Athens and other cities in Greece. The 14 day tour was packed with a very busy schedule and covered the entire Peloponnese and Mani peninsula in addition t to Athens and Delphi. The day's started early and we covered territory and sites quickly and efficiently. I learned history, mythology, cultural and current events about Greece from Maria that I would not otherwise have learned.

This was our first Rick Steves' Tour after using his tour books for many other adventures. We were pleased that our experience wasn't diluted by moving around in a larger group. In fact it was enhanced! We have 22 new friends!! Greece would be a challenge to take in without guides to enhance the experience. Maria was wonderful adept in all the nuances necessary for a successful tour. The mix of historical, cultural, ethnic foods and free time were perfect.

I always thought Greece was a beautiful country, but I did not know that the country was more than just beautiful seaside towns. The mountains were picturesque with their rugged peaks and connected to the villages by ski resorts. The countryside was filled with olive groves, cotton, fruit trees, and bulrushes. Of course, Greek history was much more than Greek statues and pottery. It entailed the origins of democracy, medicine, theater, art, orthodox church, aqueducts, and architecture.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite day was seeing the rustic churches with their frescoes, sampling olive oil at a local mill, and eating lunch of fresh mullet and calamari, which was caught that day. The restaurant sat at the edge of the Aegean Sea. I felt so relaxed and happy."

Maria, our main guide, gave us the experience of a lifetime. She made us "honorary citizens" of Greece because she put ancient and contemporary Greek live into stories that kept us spellbound during our bus rides. She knows mythology backwards and forwards. She has lived in Greece for thirty years and explained the economy, religion, marriage, funerals, and even the roll of godmothers in terms of her own family and friends and experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My main wow moments were in the museums. Our local guides, Fay in Athens and our guides at Delphi and Olympia interacted dramatically with the sculpture and artifacts. This was so much more memorable than what I learned decades ago in my art history books. Several of our guides emphasized the significance of the Battle of Thermopalae, when Greek bravery helped to stop the Persians from control of Greece about 470 B.C. in such a dramatic way. We saw Greek & Persian helmets!"

outstanding. As usual, RS has the best tour guides out there and Maria is one of the best. Her knowledge, humor, and attention to detail exceeded expectations. "Too many to list- every location had its own 'wow' moment. For me personally, during our 2 days in Monemvasia, I took an early AM run to 'The Rock,' taking the causeway. The sun was just starting to rise behind 'the Rock', casting an imposing silhouette over the horizon and bands of colors spread out over the water, So beautiful and impressive. Hiking to Vlychos/Plakes Beach by Hydra was also spectacular! Beautiful seaside views along a mountainous pathway- WOW!"

The experience was well above expectation in all respects. We enjoyed the welcome reception and the opportunity to meet fellow travelers in a relaxed environment. Having gone on tours with other companies, namely AHI, OAT and Viking River tours, the quality of your tours is as high, and in many respects even better. I must say, that I was somewhat skeptical of the size of the group, having been accustomed to a group no larger than 16 and a minibus vs. a full sized bus, these were not issues.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Our group decided that Sparta was the "wow" moment, which is, of course, tongue in cheek, though it was fun. The "wow" moment was being at the Acropolis and seeing the Parthenon first hand, in all of its spendor. The surprise "wow" moment for me was experiencing the tiny island of Hydra, which was so picturesque. The hotel Mistral's breakfast was way over the top, and our free day on the beach and walking up the mountain, and back down to the village was awesome. Costansis was also fabulous."

This trip was an unexpected good exception to our previous land trip experiences. Our guide Apostolos was amazing. His bus-time talks were always interesting. His offers to go with him during our 'free time' periods were experiences to not be missed. Lots of optional walking opportunities, up and over hills, were welcome as we challenged our bodies to see it all. Just enough time in museums. The use of local guides provided diversity. We'll do more Rick Steves trips.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Hydra. I loved the experience of wandering without any cars around. The swimming beach Apostolos showed us was incredible. Watching a goat video in the old Slaughter House was unique, and will provide a lot of future laughing as we tell our friends about this unexpected experience. Really? My expectations were well exceeded on this tour, thanks to our wonderful guide Apostolos (at one of the "Happy Hour" get togethers that he hosted for the group, I dubbed him "The Host with the Most: Apostolos!" - I hope that moniker sticks with him) as well as to the charming towns and villages that I never knew existed in Greece.

"It's hard to choose one, but during the initial meet and greet gathering on our first evening in Athens, our guide Apostolos noted that on the following evening popular American actor/comedian Bill Murray would be performing at the ancient Theater of Herodes Atticus at the base of the Acropolis. My wife and I chose to attend this show and I can't describe the incredible "wow" factor of attending a performance in such an awesome historic venue!"

This was our 6th Rick Steves Tour. All have been excellent, but this one was near the top of our favorites. Greece is beautiful! We loved the small towns and the locally owned hotels.! Each one was unique and we wished we could stay longer. The water at the beaches was amazingly clear and refreshing! The rocky beaches were a little difficult to navigate so we were very glad we brought water shoes. Our tour members were great and fun to be with. Our family had a wonderful time!

"So many WOW moments, beginning with the half day add-on tour we took to Corinth before we met the group, where our guide read from Paul's letter to the Corinthians. Others were the views of and from the Acropolis, the hike suggested by our guide in Kardymili, Monemvasia and the view from the top, the climb to the fortress in Nafpili, Hydra. One of the major highlights was meeting Anastasia in Kastania. She was amazing! Also a special highlight was attending Apostolos' "name day" celebration."

This was an excellent trip! It contained the right balance of travel, tour and free times. Good guide. Too many one night stays. Saw really cool things. Hotels must get American coffee right. Maybe some classes for them. Hotel staff were very accommodating in 50 percent of the hotels. 50 percent surly or irritated. I know Greece is a struggling 2.5 world country. I get the tough times they have had and are still having. But the people that you throw so much money at over there should really be falling over themselves to accommodate. Would not recommend this tour.

My husband I had been to Greece twice previously and finished this first tour with a new understanding and excitement for Greece. A day guide we had hired in Crete before the tour asked us about our tour itinerary and responded enthusiastically that we were seeing the absolute most essential sights of Greece. The country is gorgeous - rocky mountains, land filled with olive trees as far as your eye can see, turquoise seas, landscapes filled with colorful flowers and fruit trees, etc. The food also blew me away - so many fresh flavors and varieties of scrumptious food. Overall, it was a trip of a lifetime, which we will never forget.

This tour was incredible from beginning to end. Anastasia was a great guide and a fascinating and entertaining story teller! The ancient sites of the acropolis in Athens, the Oracle at Delphi and the ruins at Olympia are breathtaking. The food is fresh and wonderful and our tour group was a fun, adventurous group. This was our 3rd Rick Steves tour and my new favorite!. I think Greece is a hidden gem in southern Europe and I can't recommend it strongly enough.

I have been on several Rick Steves tours and they have never disappointed. I return with not only wonderful memories of the history of the countries, but a new appreciation for the culture, the people and their character. These tours are more than just visiting museums and historical sights - they are sitting with the people, breaking bread and hearing about their lives. I'm not sure what my expectations were with this tour but this experience far exceeded them. Greece has always been a destination I wanted to visit but I had no idea what I would encounter along the journey and the spiritual experiences waiting for me. Yes it was a strenuous tour as noted; but the strenuousness was generally NOT from distance walked but from unevenness of the terrain we walked over. 95% + of Greece is mountains so we were always going up or down, seldom over. But two pairs of 76 year old legs made the tour successfully.

This would have been a wonderful trip, except that my husband and I were sick (bronchitis-type illness)the entire time. That made the early mornings very difficult and the overall trip exhausting. The worst part was that most of the rest of the travelers tended to keep their distance. This we could understand, but still put a damper on the usual interactions with our fellow tour mates, which is part of the fun. By the end of the trip, we were doing a bit better, so not so much of being pariahs.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The main "WOW" moments were seeing the ruins going back to B.C. with the starting blocks for the foot races still in place. Also the beauty of the Greek mountains as we wound through them in contrast to the drier, flatter coastal areas. Our final dinner was wonderful, though just when we were finishing up and still visiting, our 2 hours were up, so they were literally telling us we had to leave and turning the lights on and off. It was rather an abrupt ending to the journey."

We had a wonderful trip. As this was our first Rick Steves' tour, we didn't know what to expect. While we enjoyed the popular tourist attractions, we especially appreciated the opportunity to explore the smaller towns and villages. These offered an insight into Greek culture.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"While there were many "wow" moments, I would say that the two that stand out are being at the original Olympic games and second experiencing the amazingly blue Aegean seas at the Monemvassia."

This tour exceeded my expectations. My husband and I taught school in Germany years ago and travel outside the US frequently. We put our own trips together, so going on a two week tour was new for us. I was impressed with the quality and expansiveness of the itinerary, our tour leader, the expert guides, the meals, accommodations, and the extras such as the cooking class, dancing, wine tasting, etc. I loved the days off to plan our own adventures and the active, physical level of the trip.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My WOW moment was the amount of information I gleaned from our expert tour leader, Apostolos. This man shared his personal life experiences with us, and made the Greek culture accessible to all of us. He talked about modern Greece, as well as ancient times and was always willing to take our numerous questions. As far as the tour itinerary, I truly enjoyed the smaller villages, whether in the mountains or on the coast. I liked having two days per location, to have time to explore."

The tour was enjoyable. There was a good mix of travel time, instructional time(museums, historic sites and lectures)and general site seeing. Apostols filled bus time talking about local facts, customs, culture and stories about growing up Greek.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Probably just seeing the Acropolis. Enjoyed seeing it in person, in daylight, lit up at night, walking thru it and viewing it by walking all around the city."

I really loved the experiences in the small towns the best. Of course, one can't go to Greece and miss out on the magic of Athens.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I didn't expect to learn so much from our main guide, Apostolos. This is the first guided trip we've taken. Since we lived in Europe for 4 years, we usually plan our own trips."

It was outstanding and very well run. I liked the mix of sights and free time. The only change to make would be to have more time at Delphi. Visiting there after a museum tour in the morning just didn't leave enough time. Maybe start the tour earlier the first day and do the museum then. Otherwise it was a good flow. We rushed through the museums but had some free time at most of the ruin sites. The group was congenial and we all had a good time together.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were so many. Relaxing on Hydra at the end was wonderful. Hiking to the top of Monemvasia was another."

Trip Resources

Learn more about Greece: Check out a collection of Rick's TV shows, radio interviews, and articles, plus recommended books and movies.

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email. About one month prior to the tour departure, we'll email you directions on how to get from the airport to your first tour hotel, as well as the complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour.

Transportation

Many tour members arrive a day or two before the tour begins — and those who don't, wish they had. This allows you ample time to get over jet lag and make the most of the first few days of the tour.

Athens is a hub for travel in southeastern Europe. For information about flying within Europe, ask your travel agent or check Rick's list of European budget airlines.

Read Rick's train travel and rail pass tips to decide if your travel plans merit a rail pass.

For specific details about traveling in the Greek islands, please see your Greece guidebook and these suggested resources:

If you have additional European travel or tour questions, contact the Tour Department at 425-608-4217 or email tour@ricksteves.com.

Sightseeing on Your Own

If you arrive in Athens before your tour begins, use the Rick Steves Greece guidebook to get oriented. Ride the public transportation, try out a few words of Greek, and get over your jet lag with lots of fresh air and exercise.

Here are a few suggestions for sightseeing in Athens that we do not do as a group: Goulandris Museum of Cycladic & Ancient Greek Art, National Historical Museum, Benaki Museum, Temple of Olympian Zeus, National Gardens.

Packing

Greece is rocky! We recommend you bring a pair of comfortable walking shoes with soles offering good traction, and you may wish to pack a swimsuit, waterproof sandals, and a lightweight microfiber towel.

For more advice on what (and what not!) to pack, see Rick's packing tips.

Special packing note: We use an audioguide system for many of our sightseeing and museum tours. If you wear a hearing aid, we strongly recommend bringing headphones that go over your ears to allow you to fully enjoy these tours.
