Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Greece

At 6 p.m. we'll meet at our hotel for a "Welcome to Athens" meeting. Then we'll get oriented to our neighborhood and walk to a nearby restaurant where we can get acquainted over dinner. Sleep in Athens (2 nights). No bus. Walking: light.

Day 2: Athens' Acropolis

This morning we'll hike to the top of Athens' legendary Acropolis, where we'll take a walking tour of its 2,500-year-old Golden Age temples, dominated by the dramatic Parthenon. We'll then work our way down and tour the sleek new Acropolis Museum, custom built to showcase the amazing Parthenon sculptures. Your afternoon and evening are free for exploring Athens' marketplaces — the ancient Agora and the modern Plaka's labyrinth of inviting streets, squares, shops, and cafés. No bus. Walking: strenuous.

Day 3: Greek Treasures and Delphi

This morning we'll leave the city behind and drive into the rugged countryside. In a dramatic setting on the flanks of 8,000-foot Mt. Parnassus we'll enjoy the fresh air and tour the mystical ruins of Delphi. Here, 25 centuries ago, the celebrated oracle allowed mere mortals to converse with the gods. This evening we'll have dinner together and sleep in the town of Delphi (1 night). Bus: 4 hours. Walking: strenuous.

Day 4: Peloponnese Mountains

Today we'll cross over the Gulf of Corinth to the Peloponnese, where we'll take a scenic drive up to the historic, mountain town of Kalavryta. Now a popular ski resort and weekend getaway for Athenians, duting World War II Kalavryta was burned to the ground by the German occupying forces. Just beyond at a riverside café in the mountain village of Planitero, we'll enjoy a lunch of freshly caught trout and other Greek specialties before our bus takes us to our destination high up in the Menalon Mountains. Tonight we'll enjoy dinner together. Sleep in or near Lagkadia (1 night). Train: 1 hour. Bus: 5 hours. Walking: light.

Day 5: Ancient Olympia

This morning's winding mountain drive will take us to Olympia, site of the world's first Olympics, over 2,700 years ago. There we'll take a vivid walking tour of Olympia's ancient athletic venues, temples, and museum, followed by lunch together. This afternoon's drive will take us along sweeping views of the Ionian Sea to a relaxed seaside village on the Mani Peninsula, where we'll sleep (2 nights). Bus: 5 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 6: Seaside Vacation

The Mani is an ideal place to enjoy a "vacation from your vacation." After some orientation by your guide, the day is all yours. You might hike along the ancient cobbled paths that wind their way through the nearby hills — or just relax on the beach — and end your day with a grilled seafood dinner and a view from the little taverna you've discovered. No bus. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 7: Mani Villages

We'll follow the coast to the isolated Mani Peninsula, home to generations-long clan wars, salt-of-the-earth villages, and unique pyrgospita — tower houses. If Greece had a Tombstone and an O.K. Corral, here is where they'd be. We'll enjoy lunch together, and after making a few off-the-beaten-path discoveries, we'll ride on to the dramatically set medieval town of Monemvasia, where you'll be free for dinner. Sleep in mainland Monemvasia (2 nights). Bus: 5 hours. Walking: light.

Day 8: Medieval Monemvasia

This morning we'll cross the causeway to tackle the massive rock that shoots straight up out of the blue-green Aegean Sea. After an orientation walk around Monemvasia's cozy little Lower Town, you'll have free time to wander more of the romantic walled town or take a swim in the Aegean. Those who want a workout can hike to the very top of the rock. You will be rewarded with sweeping Aegean views and a chance to explore the ruins of the Upper Town — a living museum of Byzantine, Ottoman, and Venetian history. This evening we'll enjoy a cooking demonstration, followed by dinner together. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 9: Byzantine Mystras

Today we'll head up into the heart of the Peloponnese, where we'll tour the haunting ruins of the fortress town of Mystras and its still-standing group of Byzantine churches. After stopping in nearby Sparta for lunch, we'll continue north to our destination: the delightful, fortress-topped harbor town of Nafplio. We'll enjoy a Greek wine and ouzo tasting, and sleep in Nafplio (2 nights). Bus: 5 hours. Walking: strenuous.

Day 10: Mycenae and Nafplio

After breakfast we'll take a short drive to mysterious Mycenae, the fortified city founded by Perseus a thousand years before the Parthenon was built. We'll take a walking tour through the grand Lion Gate, along the "cyclopean" walls, and into a remarkably domed tholos tomb. Then we'll return to Nafplio for a free afternoon to explore the colorful alleyways of the Old Town, ride a boat to the little castle island in the harbor, or hike up to enjoy a Venetian fortress view. We'll regroup for dinner and music together this evening. Bus: 1 hour. Walking: moderate.

Day 11: Ancient Epidavros

This morning we'll drive to nearby Epidavros. Once the most famous healing center in the Mediterranean, today's star attraction is its ancient theater, large enough to accommodate 14,000. We'll learn about the roots of medicine and drama here, before hopping a boat to the idyllic traffic-free island of Hydra, where we'll sleep (2 nights). Boat: ½ hour. Bus: 2 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 12: Island of Hydra

Your entire day is free to soak up the whitewashed architecture as you wander Hydra's narrow streets and harbor promenade. You might swim at a nearby beach, hike across the island, or try to make friends with a donkey. We will cap our island vacation with a relaxing sunset happy hour. No bus. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 13: Return to Athens and National Archaeological Museum

This morning we'll take a ferry ride to Piraeus, where our bus will be waiting to take us to Athens' impressive National Archaeological Museum, home to amazingly preserved masterpieces in marble, bronze, and gold. Your afternoon is free to wander and shop through the Plaka, or explore other parts of this bustling city. Tonight we'll gaze at the floodlit Acropolis and enjoy a final dinner together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Opa! Sleep in Athens (1 night). Boat: 2 hours. Bus: 1 hour. Walking: light.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. You can easily catch a cab for the airport, or to nearby Piraeus where a fleet of ferries awaits to transport those with time to even more Greek destinations. Antio!

"An amazing sunset from Hydra. The pictures I took, over the course of almost an hour, were unbelievable. Guardian dogs on the steps of ancient sites, that can distinguish between tourists and bad guys. I was finally able to say a few words in Greek!"

This was my first Rick Steves tour, and it far exceeded my expectations. It was well-organized, educational, led by an outstanding guide, and we had a congenial group of fellow travelers. I liked the fact that the tour gave us some free time to explore on our own as well. I had gone wanting to know more about the land that birthed Western Civilization, along with enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of the Mediterranean. I came back with great insights into Greek's past and present.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The first day we arrived at the hotel in Athens where we would meet our traveling group, my husband and I went up to the top floor restaurant for a cup of coffee. When I stepped out onto the restaurant balcony, I gasped because, there in full view, stood the Parthenon atop the Acropolis. It took my breath away. And I thought, if this is the way the rest of the trip will go, then it will be quite the experience! And it was, from start to finish."

A wonderful tour from get acquainted happy hour to farewell dinner. The balance of guided sightseeing to free time was perfect. We were fortunate to have a very congenial group of fellow travelers, which added to the enjoyment. Our guide was amazing and the historical sites provided a great learning experience. Unexpected bonuses were learning about more recent Greek history, and the food, which was fantastic. This was our first guided tour of any type and we certainly hope it won't be the last.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"This is a very hard choice, but probably the hike up to the Prophet Elijah Monastery on the island of Hydra. A close second would be our local guide chanting a liturgy he was reading off the ceiling of an ancient Greek Orthodox church in Mystra."

I've been on 4 other European tours (one with RS to Prague and Budapest) and this was by far my favorite. Everything exceeded my expectations: the food, the scenery, the history. Each new place we went became my "favorite" and each historical site we visited left me amazed. My fellow travelers and awesome tour guide also made the trip so much more enjoyable. When it came time to leave, my heart was heavy and I was already planning my return. This was the trip of a lifetime for me!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"How do I choose?! Better question is what wasn't a "wow" moment! The scenery was breathtaking, from Delphi to our lunch stop at Limeni, to the island of Hydra. I didn't realize just how beautiful Greece is. But I think if I had to choose a "wow" moment it would be the Bee Hive tomb in Mycenae. Standing under the 120 ton lintel stone, it's hard to grasp how a society built something so impressive over 3000 years ago. And, of course, the Parthenon will always be the ultimate "wow" moment!"

Where to start? Greece was a revelation. Mountainous and rugged, turquoise blue waters and beautiful beaches, ancient, yet well-preserved historic sites, friendly people, incredible food. We saw and experienced all of it during this tour, which was a perfect blend of scheduled tour time and free time to explore on our own. I loved that we went to many smaller towns that are not too touristy, it was fun to explore them and learn about parts of Greece that are off the beaten path.

"My favorite wow moment was our arrival in Kardymili. While I enjoyed our time in busy, gritty Athens and then the drive through the surprisingly mountainous northern part of the Peloponnese, arriving in this tiny seaside town, located on a crystal clear, blue bay, was exhilarating. Kardymili is the kind of place that other tours don't go to, so we had the place virtually to ourselves. It was beautiful, quiet, and we enjoyed spending time with other tour members on the beach."

We enjoyed the tour immensely! Danae was a wonderful guide and provided an excellent environment for everyone and our driver George, while very quiet, was a magician of a bus driver. The sites seen and schedule were very good. A good mix of ancient and current with very enjoyable cultural moments. I was surprised and grateful for the "vacation" within the vacation that allowed us the time to go the the beach during a heat wave.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I really enjoyed Kardmyli! Going down the Mina is an unusual choice for tours, it's definitely off the beaten track. This little town was a joy with great beaches, history and some excellent food. Nafplio was my close 2nd. Well Hydra too. Each have their own charms."

"To be able to see Olympia as we go to every Olympic stadium in every city/country that we can was our "Wow" moment. To know that the Olympic cauldron is literally lit there every 4 years was surreal. Brought chills to be able to walk on the track that was used thousands of years ago."

Colin's management of the tour was outstanding. His attention to tour deals, keeping us all informed of what's going to happen, when it's going to happen and where it's going to happen was was always clear and and well thought out. That all said, the thing I will remember most about Colin was his vast knowledge of all the ancient world and Greek history and his presentation style that made it easy and fun. Oh yeah, his sense of humor was great and made the trip a lot of fun.

Tour guide Colin was excellent: very knowledgeable on Greek and Eastern Mediterranean history as well as current events, kind, thoughtful, and very skilled at handling our crowd. I had never been on a tour before because I usually just travel alone. I wasn't sure if I would enjoy the tour experience, but I had never been to Greece before and thought it would be a better introduction to go with an experienced tour guide and a group. I was completely won over. The tour group was friendly and easy going, the tour leader was extraordinary in so many ways, the places we visited were wonderful, and everything ran smoothly.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"So hard to say because everything was so new. Maybe it was the beauty of Delphi as we drove into the mountains. It was such a contrast with the big-city atmosphere of Athens that it was quite surprising. But the beauty of the coast, walking above Kardamyli, hiking up Monemvasia, spending a morning reading the paper and relaxing at a harbor cafe in Hydra--it was on "wow" after anohter. And that's not even mentioning the "wow" art moments: the Lion's gate, the Charioteer and Zeus bronzes, etc."

This was a fantastic tour. I have been very fortunate because I did the same exact tour in 2016. This time I did it with my husband and my two adult children, and it was beautiful. So much history and art! I loved it. I had more time to sink in some of the knowledge. Everyday I was eager to discover something. The itinerary is excellent. I enjoyed visiting the National Archaelogical Museum in Athens at the end of the tour. It gave me the opportunity of revisiting some of the places.

"Swimming in Monenvasia and Hydra. Chanting with our guide George in one of the churches in Mistras. The view from Agia Sophia in Kardamyli. The surprise of seeing two fantastic turtles while eating by the sea in Limani. I could go on and on because there were more than one wow moment a day."

I had a great time on this tour. This was our third Rick Steves tour and each one has been special and unique. This Greece trip was a jump into the past showing the civilizations over many centuries in their ruins, beautiful beaches, wonderful and interesting museums and yummy Greek foods. Our tour guide made past and present Greece come alive for us.

This was my 2nd Rick Steves tour and it lived up to or exceeded my 14 day Adriatic tour from last year. Our guide/tour manager Anastasia was outstanding: incredibly knowledgeable, personable, caring, funny and fun, as well as extremely well organized. I was not expecting the level of natural beauty which we found at every turn, at every hamlet, harbor and mountain town.

This is our fifth Rick Steves tour, and we've enjoyed all of them. This tour, however, just had the right combination of great guide, great scenery, great culture and history, great food, and great tour group that made it a very special trip. We loved every aspect, from the excitement and amazing history of Athens to the charming and relaxing seaside villages. We learned so much about ancient and modern Greece on this trip, all the while enjoying the beautiful scenery and delicious food.

This was a very well traveled group that was on our tour which made for some great conversation and insights into further travel. Our guide Apostolos, was friendly, knowledgeable, professional, fun, and so genuine about his love for his country. The tour was somewhat strenuous, as noted in the brochure, but I would highly recommend it to anyone who can handle the walking/stairs.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Each archeological site really was a 'wow' moment of its own when you realize how far back the site and it's buildings go. It was wonderful to meet some locals and spend time hearing about their family and their life in Greece. If it wasn't for Apostolos, we wouldn't have had that experience. This was a taste of real Greece, a 'wow' moment for me. I loved being in the little villages and out of the way places rather than just in those 'travel brochure spots'."

This was my first Rick Steves' Tour and it was amazing. My husband and I have only been traveling the past four years and we have enjoyed arranging the trips using your books so we were unsure if we would like a tour. Now I cannot imagine not joining another one your tours. I loved the variety--large city, small towns, and the different types of food representing each area. Apostolos and our local guides were so full of interesting facts and stories and our 23 traveling buddies added to the fun

This was certainly the most rigorous tour we've done. But that is OK, we were well warned. ?????????, our guide, always gave plenty of suggestions for less strenuous options. As always our Rick Steve's tour guide, Apostolos Douras, was excellent. Likewise, our fellow members on the tour were a wonderful and interesting group of people. Possibly the best ever. I think that the people who sign up for a RS tour are a reflection of the Rick Steve's organization.

As usual with Rick Steve's tours, my experience was wonderful. Our guide Apostolos, was superb; his knowledge and pride in Greek culture was clearly evident, and his ability to inform the group was amazing. He was very thoughtful and caring of the tour members, and provided many humorous and informative stories of Greek life. As usual the accommodations were excellent, and the hosts very friendly and helpful.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I had expected that the Acropolis in Athens to be my Wow moment, but actually, I found the other sites (Olympia, Delphi, Mycenae and Epidavros) to be more interesting. One major wow for me was the beehive tomb at Mycenae. Just looking at the construction gave me a tremendous appreciation for the ingenuity of the people living there over 3000 years ago. Monemvasia was also a wow."

This was a wonderful tour with very compatible members! The first part was highly educational and more rigorous physically while touring ancient sites that came alive with explanations by outstanding local guides. Later seaside stays were more laid back, but equally interesting. Bus rides were enjoyable and not too long, thanks to the beautiful scenery and Apostolos' commentaries. I loved visiting the small towns. We had enough time to explore on our own and relax. Hydra was idyllic!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"On an optional walk that wound between back yards up to the Old Town from Kardamyli, our guide Apostolos stopped to talk to an 86-year-old man. He invited us to see his garden, and talked about his life, and his unrealized dream to come to America. Similar interactions occurred in other small villages. I loved swimming on Hydra and hiking to the top of Monemvasia after wandering its medieval lanes, but these unexpected personal glimpses into rural life were quiet but powerful "wow" moments."

All aspects (except one local guide session explained below) were wonderful: the country and its history, culture and friendly people; accommodations and food; our group and local guides, driver and transport; perfect weather. Especially liked the varied, beautiful and interesting itinerary of the trip.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Probably our 4-person group's face-to-face encounter with a bull and herd of cows on a single-track trail coming down the mountain from Agia Sofia in Kardamyli. On the way down from the church, we took an alternate trail back, began to wonder whether we could get back the way we were going, and then ran into the bull coming right at us at a sharp turn in the trail; we backed down the trail a way until we could get off the path and let the determined cows go where they clearly wanted to go. Wow!"

I had high expectations going into this tour, not only from my desire to visit Greece, but also from what I had heard from other RS travelers who had done this tour. I can just say this tour exceeded those expectations. Apostolos is a phenomenal guide who seems to really care that the guests in his country receive the ultimate experience. "It's very hard to choose our favorite "wow" moment since there were so many! The ruins and setting of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi was spectacular. Our tour guide there (Penny) was excellent and made the experience all the more outstanding. The cooking class at Hotel Panorama in Monemvassia was so much fun and, of course, we got to share the delicious results of our labor afterwards!"

Yet another outstanding tour w/ Rick Steves! Greece was fantastic and our guide, Philipos, was extraordinary. Another great Rick Steve's tour. Greece was a fascinating place to visit, and in true Rick Steve's style this "back door" approach will show you the real Greece (not just the tourist infested sites). Second key ingredient for a great tour is a great guide, and Filippos was outstanding. Everything went off without a hitch, he was a wealth of information, and oozes the spirit and vitality of the Greek people -- his determination for us to experience that really made the trip great.

"Hard not to be wowed by walking around 2,000 to 3,000 old ruins at a number of stops along the way and can't forget the many breathtaking views from on high all along the route. But really cherished some of the simpler moments like eating lunch at a beautiful beach-side cafe in Kardamili, strolling the streets of Nafplio watching the Greek families enjoy their weekend in the city square, and the perfect end to the trip relaxing on a quiet beach in Hydra under a thatched umbrella."

Sort of knew what to expect for Athens, but the rest of Greece was a complete surprise. All the rest of the tour through beaches and mountains was wonderfully scenic as well as of cultural and historical interest. This was our 5th Rick Steve's tour and we knew that we loved this format, but our guide, Philipos, was exceptional. Would love to have him show us the northern part of his country.

We had such a fabulous trip. We came on this trip on the suggestion of our friends who we travelled with. As we had never thought about going to Greece we had no idea what to expect and just 'went along' for the ride, so to speak. We were totally impressed with the organization, itinerary, food, hotels, and guides. It was impressive to see how many other members of our group were regular Rick Steves travelers. We will, most definitely be traveling with Rick Steves ion the future

My husband and I are very busy with our demanding careers. We love traveling together, but we don't have time to plan the details of an international travel trip. This was our third Rick Steve's tour. We keep coming back because the experience is seamless and we are never disappointed. This tour, however, has a special place in our hearts. What looks like a giant rock on an island contains a charming medieval town and a scenic hike to the top of the rock offers amazing ruins of a old fortified town. The food was amazing - each meal was so fresh and delicious. We also loved the cooking class at our delightful hotel in Monemvasia."

Fillippos was fantastic which enhanced the overall tour experience. I was also lucky to tour with a great group of people. I enjoyed all of the stops on the tour. There is quite a bit of bus time but it was always broken up in 1 1/2 increments which made the time go by. Plus, Greece is a beautiful country and I was happy to listen to my audio book and stare out the window at the countryside.

I have been on two My-Way tours and enjoyed them both tremendously. However, I had reservations about a tour. Visions of pennant waving guides rushing harried participants from one site or picture to another. I should have known better with one of your tours. Personal time at each site was much appreciated.

Got an entirely new mind picture of the geography of Greece--all one sees in the movies is islands and blue water: these were present, in abundance, but account for only a small part of the whole country. Loved the mountains, the mountain villages, the WWII resistance... but was saddened by the fact that said villages are apparently for the most part deserted. Something wrong there.

We have come to expect a lot - high value, lots of learning, new experiences, physical activity, little surprises, terrific guides, beautiful scenery, good food, and more - and this tour delivered on all counts. "It was the awareness that we were perhaps literally walking in the footsteps of Socrates or Aristotle in Athens, or in the footsteps of Croesus at Delphi, or of Euripides in the theater in Epidaurus. We walked through places like Mycenae, where real history blurs into myth, and you feel like you could almost pass through a thin veil where the gods still hang around, waiting to toy with humans. The space of 3000 years seems to shrink and "ancient" history starts to feel much closer to us."

We had a wonderful time. Apostolos was a wonderful tour guide and the tour had the right mix of busy days and slow periods. We saw some of the most important sites but also some of the less traveled but still fascinating places. Truly one of the best trips I've ever been on.

"It's hard to say. Delphi was fabulous, partially because it's just a fascinating place and partially because Penny, our local guide, was incredible. But I loved the Agora in Athens, Monemvasia and Hydra as well."

Terrific experience with a great lead guide (Filippos), a convivial and experienced group of travelers and excellent accomodations. We greatly appreciate the exceptional supporting guides in each location, the scale of the hotels (mostly family owned) and the thoughtful pacing of the trip -- which involves a fair amount of bus travel.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Visiting and staying in some of the smaller towns in the mountains over the first half of our journey. I was largely unfamiliar with the rugged mountainous region of Greece and was stunned by the beauty of mountain villages like Lagadia. Seeing the high profile sites (Acropolis, Delphi, Olympia) was memorable of course, but it was the beauty of the mountain villages that surprised me the most."

We have taken several RS tours and fellow travelers always mentioned Greece as one of their favorite destinations. We took this trip and fell in love with the country. Our guide, Filippos, was phenomenal. Our group was made up of veteran travelers, all interested to soak up the information provided by Filippos as well as the city guides. Everyone was "game" to participate and we had a very easy comfort level with fellow travelers.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"On our free day, we hiked to a Elias monastery on a hilltop above Hydra. The zigzag path to the summit was steep but with easy footing. We passed mules lugging building supplies up the hill so the monks could make repairs. We saw the harbor down below from a distance. The peace and solitude of the monastery site once we arrived was serene."

The Greece tour was an exceptional tour in many ways. The rich and varied history, the interesting sites that we visited and the lovely group of travelers led by Filipinos made for a great experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I believe my favorite moment was the view from the top after climbing to the ruins above Monemvasia. When we initially saw the mountain that looked like Gibraltar, we considered staying behind. I'm so glad we made the effort because the views from the top were spectacular and the town itself was charming. The time spent on the island of Hydra was another highlight."

We were delighted with our Greece tour! Filippos, our wonderful and experienced tour guide, helped us understand Greek history and civilization, while adding his own personal spin in showing us the Greece of today. Our traveling group was fun, the food was delicious and every last detail of the tour was planned out in advance. This was our second Rick Steves tour and we're excited to participate in another tour. This was truly an all-around top notch Rick Steves tour experience.

We enjoyed all the ancient sites--Delphi, Olympia, Mycenae, and the many medieval churches we visited, especially the tiny church just outside the mountain village of Kastania in the Mani peninsula. I loved every minute of this tour and Greece is now my favourite country in Europe! Our guide, Fillipos was exceptionally good. His knowledge of history and culture was fantastic, especially his knowledge of Greek plays and mythology. The tour was well paced and I felt we experienced a well-rounded sampling of Greece, from Greek dancing and music, to food, to archeological and historical sites. Our driver, Christos, was extremely competent and a lovely person as well.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were so many! Seeing the Parthenon for the first time blew me away! I taught art so seeing the treasures in my art history books was amazing - the Lion's Gate, the gold mask of Agammemnon, the Archaic statues and the sites of Olympia, and Delphi, especially since it was misty and mysterious when we visited Delphi! Also sleeping in an original castle room at Marianna's Hotel in Nafplio ranks right up there! I loved having dinner at a restaurant patio right next to the ocean in Kardamyli!"

I loved the trip because of Ioanna. She was very knowledgeable of the Greek traditions, foods and customs. She shared many stories about her family and friends which helped us to relate to the Greek way of life. As a result of the Easter holidays the schedule had to be rearranged and Ioanna did so without missing a beat. She was always good natured and a joy to be around. She helped several a very sick travelers with care and ease. She is the consummate professional.

"I loved seeing the ruins through the eyes of the local guides. I felt as if their stories brought the statues, buildings and historical sites, to life. Each of the remarkable ruins represented a struggle and triumph for the populace during that time in history. I felt honored to hear the stories while walking around the different ruins. The trip was well balanced as toward the end we enjoyed the coastal towns and the easy way of life. Best trip ever!"

We have been on two previous RS My Way Tours (Italy in 2015 and Spain in 2016). This was our first "fully guided" tour with you. Our Guide, Ioanna was outstanding. I cannot overstate was a joy and beautiful experience she gave us all. The guides at all the archeological sites were fantastic, the schedules around May 1 closures were great. We didn't miss anything! I need a few 1000 more characters to fully state my appreciation.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I must say there were many, but at the top of the list is the guided tour of Delphi. Because the site was closed on May 1 (Labor Day) our scheduled day to be there Ioanna had to scramble to get us into The Monastery of St. Luke that day. Early the next day we went to Delphi. Our guide at the site was Penny and she brought the site to life in so many dimensions. Honestly, this was the only historical site tour in my life that has brought me to tears with the impact on us today, 2500 years on."

We have vacationed in Europe many times, all on our own. This was our first ever tour. Consequently, we were a little apprehensive. Our apprehensions were totally unfounded. The tour was well planned and expertly [INVALID]d. We saw and learned much more on this tour than we could have possibly seen and learned on our own. For example, we could have found the little towns in that the tour visited, but we would never have learned what we learned from Ioanna and the local guides.

Traveling to Greece has been my dream for as long as I can remember. I've loved Greek mythology since I was small and studied Greek and Roman mythology in college as well. I had very high expectations for this tour and they were more than exceeded. Every moment, every meal, every experience wowed me. Loved this tour! In my opinion there are 3 things that make a tour great. Exceptional choice of sites. Excellent and knowledgeable guides, and congenial, non judgmental, and open minded tour members. This tour had all three. This tour was challenging physically at times but I never felt hurried or harried. There was a good combo of "hot touristy" sites mixed with more personal experiences. That this tour fell during Greek Orthodox Easter week was a bonus. Experiences were unique.

The tour was amazing and exceeded my expectations. The Acropolis captivates you the moment you see it.Each day Maria provided us with experiences that captured all our senses; layering history, mythology, architecture and art located in beautiful settings throughout Greece. "We were traveling during two holidays- Orthodox Easter and May Day or Labor Day. Since the museums and sites were closed those days, our guide set up some fabulous alternatives. Learning about and experiencing the unique traditions around Easter was indeed a highlight!"

Once again, this was a great Rick Steves tour. The tour guide, Colin, was very knowledgable about the country and very passionate about Greece and its people. His job was made more challenging because the Orthodox Easter holiday and May Day occurred during the tour. Colin was very resourceful and used his many contacts in the country to pull off the itinerary changes without a hitch. All of the local guides were great storytellers and really brought the history home to us.

The tour was excellent! The hotels were lovely, always in town and usually family owned. Our guide Colin was amazing!! He brought Greece, it's history and politics into focus and introduced us to Athens as well as many small towns across the country. The culture, food and people were all marvelous. Our bus driver and the local guides were excellent and helped bring Greece alive. The tour group was great, as they always are, and we made lots of new friends!

"There were a couple of wow moments - spending Easter Holy Week in Greece was incredible. We participated in the parades and candle lighting at midnight on Holy Saturday. And our wonderful guide Colin arranged for us to have a wonderful home cooked Easter meal in Kastania. Also, spending time on Hydra, where we did some touring and then had some downtime with new friends. So many flowers blooming and the water was that beautiful blue green that doesn't look possible, but it is!"

From start to finish Apostolos had everything under control. This is why I enjoy Rich Steve's Tours. Show up and go. I also like the free time designed into the tour. Just the right amount.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Many memorable moments, but I would have to say the cave tour. Spectacular. It was nice to be immersed in the Greek Orthodox Easter. Had not thought about this before we booked our tour. Apostolos did a great job of educating us on the symbolism and it's importance to the Greek culture. P.S. Orange pie! In Kardamyli. It doesn't take much to make me happy."

As a second generation American with three grandparents from Greece my goal was to better understand my parent's great pride in being Greek. Our tour could have not been better scripted to help answer that question. Our guide, Apostolos was a warm, personable leader that shared freely his passion for his home and culture. He and the local guides showed how the history of Greece directly influenced the people of today. It was not just a tour of the past but a look at how a rugged mountainous

It's been fun and educational. Good balance of touring and time on your own. Our guide, Apostolos, was outstanding, and our driver, Christos, was wonderful on the twisty roads in the countryside as well as the busy roads of Athens. Lots of walking and climbing on this itinerary to fully experience the tour, which we expected, but seemed beyond capabilities of some tour members.

"Monemvasia was such an unexpected sight, a monolith just off the mainland. It reminded me of Gibraltar, but with an upper town (mostly ruins) built on top, a bustling lower town at the base of the rock, and a new town across the bridge. In the hotel Panorama, we had a Greek cooking demonstration in which six of our tour members helped prepare the dish for our later consumption, and it seemed to solidify the group with a very fun experience in the shadow of Monemvasia."

I knew this tour would involve an exposure to archeological sites and an ability to visit different parts of Greece. But the best part of the tour was in meeting wonderful Greek people and experiencing a rich and evolving culture through their eyes.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The participation in the celebration of Good Friday and Easter in Greece. Having a tour guide from Greece who brings his culture and compassion really enhances our Greek experience. We were fortunate that Greek Easter Sunday occurred during our tour and we participated in the evening church ceremony and procession carrying lit candles and ex. Na day RS tours are perfectly balanced with excellent museum and field guides who are knowledgeable and creative in their presentations. Just the right amount of free time for us to explore and experience the country lifestyle.

Apostolos was an exceptional guide. The tour was filled with cultural experiences and in-depth knowledge of the antiquities. It included a variety of foods for us to experience. There was just enough free time for exploring on our own. We had surprises ( Easter festivities) that added to our cultural experience and provided for some laughter and bonding with our fellow travelers.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"This is harder to answer because everyday had its own wow experience. I really enjoyed the caves we viewed, Apostolos arranged for us to visit when the cog train ride became unavailable. As I have already mentioned, participating in some of the Greek Easter and learning their customs provided for an in-depth experience, that I would not have gotten had I toured on my own. Walking in the old cities is a beautiful way to spend time, this experience is enhanced by the walk with the guide,"

This was my third Rick Steves tour. We were so lucky to be on tour in Greece with Apostolos during Holy Week! This was my first experience participating in a group tour. Everything about the tour exceeded my expectations. I was very happy with the split of organized activities vs free time to explore on my own. The included meals were far better than what I anticipated. A lot was packed into 2 weeks, yet we had slack time for our own exploits. Fillipos, our guide, was excellent, as were the driver and local guides. This was our first time in Greece and we learned so much not only about the history but also the culture, food, and people. We gained such an appreciation for the country and its people. What an interesting trip! History and Mythology were a big part of this trip but we also met interesting people, ate some great food and saw so many archeological sites it became hard to keep them straight. I signed up to learn about Greece and came away with a much broader knowledge of early history than I expected.

Greece exceeded my expectations! From Athens to the island of Hydra each destination was unique to its area. I loved the quaint mountain villages and seaside towns! From a cultural and historical perspective, Athens, Delphi and Olympia were amazing! I was extremely impressed with the beehive tombs in Mykines and the Lions' Gate in Mycenae. This was our 7th RS Tour...an exceptional experience! The tour experiences for us are always set by the guide...our guide Danae was an excellent guide along with being warm and caring individual. Having never been to Greece before we were not sure how we'd enjoy it but from the opening welcome meeting to our farewell dinner with our traveling tour members we enjoyed each unique and interesting experience...and Greece has a lot to share. There was a lot of variety to this tour which we appreciate

This was my fourth RS tour. Best to date. The whole experience was extremely well planned. Apostolos was organized, approachable, and gave us an authentic Greek cultural experience. I loved everything - the bus talks, cooking classes, wine tasting and the local guides were professional, organized, and experts in their fields. Every stop was a new adventure into an historical, and cultural perspective. My brain is full of new knowledge and a whole new understanding of the Greek people.

I thought that the tour was very well organized, an excellent cross section of the country. Our Guide Apostalos was extraordinary. He knew Greece from many perspectives and was always available to answer questions. He kept things moving, but was not pushy. Our Museum guides were all excellent "teachers", were all entertaining and well educated. Our bus driver, Christos was excellent, negotiating the difficult roads of Greece. Very good natured! I learned so much about Greece and its people!

It was a marvelous tour! The itinerary was full--and we grumbled about leaving a few places too soon--but we understood that this was an ambitious tour, with an agenda that would literally cover a lot of territory. It was better than the description, actually, with outstanding guides at the Acropolis, Delphi, Mystras, and Mycenae. I relearned a lot about mythology, as well as the famous sites. It was a gigantic time-travel experience. I loved our fellow travelers--interesting people everyone.

"It wasn't a moment as much as a realization. Time is skewed by the BC/AD construct. This could be 6019, as opposed to 2019. Apostolos was born to be a tour guide in Greece. He was so sincere , kind knowledgeable & humorous. He was so enthusiastic about his country & its people. He treated the elderly locals with tremendous respect. In turn, we got more insight into the lives of real people in Greece. He was the glue that held us together. I have always been fascinated with Greek history and especially its mythology. With the help of our knowledgable group leader, wonderful guides, and incredible museums, Greek history came to life and dazzled me. This tour rates at the top of the 8 RS tours I have taken. The group was congenial, engaged, and a pleasure to be around. Our guide was outstanding. Arriving at the bridge over the Gulf of Corinth to find it closed (for hours) would have been very stressful if we had been traveling independently. But David was in touch with people to find out what was happening, and to come up with an acceptable plan b when we had to jettison our day's itinerary. Additionally, the food was a highlight!

This was our fifth Rick Steves' tour with outstanding guides, but being an outstanding guide when complications arise is what I saw in David. We were ready to cross the bridge over the Gulf of Corinth when we discovered that the bridge was closed. David sought information and the best outcome for all of us. The Greece tour was excellent and our guide David was outstanding. The reason I cannot say the whole trip was outstanding was that the hotel Esperides or the hotel Vardia (I'm not sure of the name of the one I stayed in) had no hot water and there was no soap in the bathrooms. One of the things we love about traveling with RS is that we Stan in downtown hotels and small towns with "funky" hotels but no hot water is not up to the RS experience.

Excellent from beginning to end. I will be assimilating history, mythology, imagery, landscapes, seascapes, museums, food, music, dance, camaraderie, for a while. This journey surpassed my expectations. It was a great introduction to Greek culture as it currently exists and ancient Greek culture. Every new setting has its own stories and people and culture, the Mani is different from Athens, Napflio is different from Hydra and Monemvasia. We moved along at a fast clip but got a flavor of each.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Looking out my window of Hotel Marianna in Napflio over the broad sweep of Aegean harbor, and from my balcony almost able to reach out and touch the ancient wall of a site going back to 3,000 BC or more. From Napflio we visited Mycenae, which housed the mysterious beehive tomb of Agamemnon, filled with drone bees during our springtime visit, which added to the sense of awe. Followed by a visit to the lion's gate, a walk to the north gate, gazing down into an ancient cellar that housed a spring."

This tour was a great mix of seaside and mountain scenery, ancient ruins, world class museums, and both big city and rural Greece. I appreciated the Byzantine sites (especially Mystras and Kastania) as a complement to the ancient sites. Good food and hotels with a bit of RST quirkeyness thrown in for good measure. After touring Sicily, this was a good next stop as it really brought the Greek culture into focus. There's a good selection of museums and outside ruin walks. I'm still overwhelmed with their engineering skill.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I have two. First was in Athens and seeing the original 2000 year old stadium near our hotel that is still used today. The second was bittersweet. Entering the original Olympic stadium through the competitor's entrance brought me to tears. I'm a 69 yo non-athlete, but began doing run/walk 10K's and half-marathons a few years ago to improve my fitness. A year ago an arthritic hip ended my running/walking. I realized what I missed and decided right there to move forward with hip surgery."

Enjoyed the itinerary and Filippos's enthusiasm. You can tell he loves what he does. I went to Greece thinking I wouldn't like the food and because of the experiences provided by Filllippos, I left Greece as a big fan. Enjoyed so many things that he set up for us...The greek dancers, and jazzy music group with dinner.

I loved the group and guide. I appreciated the pre-trip explicit description of what the tour would involve. Filippos was an excellent representative of the Rick Steves travel philosophy.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I thought the Acropolis Museum was incredible. Its architectural features (glass floor "windows" into the archealogical excavation underneath, the set-up of the pillars and the marbles which simulate the Parthenon) are so well thought out. The local guide was so knowledgeable and interesting, pointing out the significant exhibit items to attend to."

This is our fourth Rick Steves tour that my husband and I have experienced (three regular tours, one a "My Way" tour). And I have to say, it was my favorite. Making our debut in Greece, I couldn't think of a better way to truly "see" this country [INVALID] not only was the 14-day itinerary the ideal overview, but we had an absolutely charming guide in Fillippos. Nice hotels, top bus driver and no shortage of delicious Greek cuisine.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It was our 1st day in Athens, two days before the start of the tour. After a long flight from Seattle, we arrived at our RS hotel at 10:30PM. The front desk clerk informed us that the rooftop resto/bar was still open, and after stashing our bags in our room, we made our way to the top. As I walked along the outside deck, I looked out into the dark, night sky. There, looming high on a hilltop, was the Acropolis and the Parthenon -- lit up in the night sky. It took my breath away. And still does."

I had a great time. I enjoyed the guides, and the other travelers. I appreciate the individual radio receivers. I don't hear well and this really solved my problem. I appreciate that our group dinners generally put small groups at individual tables, rather than a shouting match at one big table.

"There were several. But my favorites were when we got a free day without early packing and nice weather to explore on our own."

We really enjoyed the tour overall. The itinerary was great, the ratio of planned activities to the amount of down time was good. Great combination of site seeing, spending times in particular areas - Mycenae era, Byzantine, Roman, etc...

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Sitting at the top of our hotel in Athens at night with the acropolis lit up behind us. Beautiful setting. Also waking up in the Fog up on the mountains in Lagkadia and then by the ocean in Monemvassia."

Well organized and informative. I appreciated having various options on our "free" time. Colin let us know about the many possibilities for things to do/see.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Hard to sort out just one. Amazing to experience OLD ruins (Mycenae), Olympic stadium complex, incredible frescoes (where you would never expect them), the acoustics of the theater in Epidavros, etc. I loved our "free" day on the lovely island of Hydra. Enjoyed the music and enthusiasm of the musicians and dancers at our meal in Nafplio."

What an education in world history! The tour was a perfect mix of ancient sites and current culture.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Because I am a theatre buff, my favorite moment was the theatre of Dionysus at Epidavros. However, our guide in Athens was truly a delight and pointed out many things at the Archaeological museum we could never have figured out on our own. Also, the Greek music and dancing were loads of fun."

What a great trip. This is our 3rd Rick Steves tour and we are looking forward to our next one. We love the organization of the tour and Colin, our guide, was fantastic. Greece is a wonderful country and I appreciated the help in experiencing it.

Tour guide (Colin), bus driver Cristos, tour itinerary and hotels were all outstanding. I have to admit, I'm still suffering from information overload, but I'm really glad I went on this trip. My hiking friends are still in awe over some of the trails I conquered as well as the views from both the cities we visited and the countryside.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Kardimyli, Monemvasia and Nafplio all impressed me in so many different ways. I did not expect Kardimyli to have such an incredible variety of hiking trails nor did I expect Monemvasia to have such amazing views from their various ruins near Agia Sophia. Nafplio was another underrated city, with incredible eateries and hiking opportunities."

Excellent trip, this being my 6th trip; exactly what one would expect from a Rick Steves Tour. Our guide, Colin was simply superb and bus driver Christos was very good. The trip was extremely educational and I truly appreciated the wide variety of cultural experiences we had. We truly experienced Greece and the various places we visited- "through the back door," avoiding crowds and tourists, hobnobbing with the locals and almost feeling like a local by the end of trip.

My overall tour experience was excellent. The sites we saw exceeded my expectations. Our tour guide, Colin, provided us a wealth of information about Greece both past & present. Our bus driver, Christos drove us along beautiful scenic narrow roads. Our group had wonderful chemistry that started immediately from the moment we met. The food was hardy & full of flavour. Our accommodations were comfortable with great service. All these factors, along with perfect weather, made this trip special.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My WOW moment was the hike to the top of the "Rock" at Monemvasia. After touring the Lower town in the morning we ventured up the well worn switchbacks to the Agia Sophia and onto the ruins of Upper Town. The trail was rocky and at times challenging but when we reached the Acropolis, the view of the town of Gafyra and the mainland's coastline was breathtaking. I truly enjoyed this moment & sharing this experience with others on our tour who completed the hike with us."

Overall, this was one of my favorite Rick Steves tours. Other than Athens, I had not been to any of the locations on this tour. I find Greece to be magical. I loved the hiking and walking and how active this tour was. Our group was very congenial.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite wow moment was at the Acropolis in Athens. I was in Athens in 1972 and again in 2003. I wanted to recreate the photographic moments from those past years in front of the temples and was able to do so. I also loved visiting Delphi's Sanctuary of Athena Pronea, which I've seen photos of many times. On past Rick Steves tours, a "wow" moment was created as part of our tour i.e. a surprise entertainer or a surprise carriage ride. None of that was part of this tour this time."

This was our fourth RS tour, and was possibly my favourite. It combined the right amount of history, including visits to archeological sites and museums, plus time to explore interesting small towns. We also got to enjoy incredible food and experience unique cultural events. The local shopkeepers and hoteliers were welcoming, helpful and charming. All in all the perfect combination in which to thoroughly enjoy and appreciate the Greek experience!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It is incredibly hard to choose just one. A number of us in our tour group, including Colin our guide, hiked up to the top of the Rock in Monemvasia. Once at the top, the view of the town and surrounding area was breathtaking. All of us who made it to the top posed for a picture to remember our experience. If I could be allowed a second choice, it would be the evening with a wonderful dinner, 2 singers serenading us, and traditional Greek dancers performing for us!"

This tour was wonderfully varied, allowing me to see a side of Greece which I admittedly was ignorant. In true Rick Steves style, we visited the major sites with the assistance of wonderful local docents after our guide, Colin, had provided in depth background. And we usually visited these sites when crowds were small which made the experience all the more meaningful. But this tour also took us into the very rugged mountains and rural sea side. Beautiful places.

Amazing sights, archaeologically and topographically speaking. Excellent tour guide, Maria Soulas, excellent tour guides. The local guides especially made ancient history come alive. This was a thorough tour that introduced us to the best of everything Greece has to offer. The rating was correct - it was a challenge. But all the leg-work was worth it. The Greek people were gracious and accommodating. The food was wonderful, and the scenery was fantastic. And we'll never forget all the ancient wonders. As always, all aspects of this tour exceeded our expectations. This was #7 - and we will keep on traveling!

"When I first walked up to the Lion Gate at Mycenae I was overwhelmed with the grandeur and size of that familiar icon. I had seen it in my art history textbooks, but had no idea how impressive it could be in person. Everything from art history class came alive to me on this trip. I will never forget the thrill of it all. Our guide & tour mates were wonderful & I cherish every moment we shared together."

I thought the tour as a whole was very well organized. The "tour mates" were some of the best I have ever had...almost 100% couples.
