Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Belgium

Our adventure begins in medieval Ghent. We'll gather at our hotel at 3 p.m. for an introduction meeting, then hop aboard a fun and informative canal cruise through the city. Our evening ends with a traditional Belgian dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Boat: 1 hour. No bus. Sleep in Ghent.

Day 2: The Medieval Masterpiece of Ghent

This morning we'll meet with a local expert for a walking tour of the historic center of Ghent. Together we'll visit soaring St. Bavo's Cathedral, home to Van Eyck's sublime altarpiece The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, which was stolen and hidden by the Nazis during World War II. We'll also visit the city's newly restored Museum of Industry. Housed in an old cotton mill, this interactive museum weaves through Ghent's history as an international powerhouse in the textile industry. Your afternoon and evening are free for more exploring at your leisure.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Ghent.

Day 3: Flanders Fields and Beautiful Bruges

Today we'll meet our driver and board our bus for a drive to the WWI battlefields around Ypres. Half a million soldiers were killed here, making it one of the deadliest — and today the most hallowed — stretches of land along the Western Front. With the aid of a local expert, we'll tour the American Cemetery, visit a thought-provoking museum, and see "the fields where poppies grow." After lunch together, we're off to Bruges and our lovely canal-laced and ivy-draped hotel. After check-in and some time to relax, we'll regroup for an orientation walk and dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Bruges.

Day 4: Gothic Bruges

We'll meet our savvy local guide who will introduce us to the pedestrian-friendly streets and alleyways of Gothic Bruges, including a visit to the towering Church of Our Lady. Our morning continues with a visit to a Bruges chocolatier, where we'll learn about the artistry and traditions of Belgium's most mouth-watering export. After a free afternoon, we'll regroup for a brewery tour to learn about what makes Belgian beer famous around the globe — and enjoy a taste ourselves. The remainder of the evening is free to find the perfect Belgian dinner.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Bruges.

Day 5: Free Day in Bruges

Today is yours to explore Bruges. Armed with your Bruges Museum Pass, you'll have free entry to any four museums — including the masterpiece-packed Groeninge Museum. You may decide to go on a culinary scavenger hunt, tasting your way through a myriad of Belgian specialties, or you can hop on a bike and take a wonderful hour-long ride along a tree-lined canal to the nearby small town of Damme. The choices today are endless.

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No bus. Sleep in Bruges.

Day 6: Challenging the Sea

Today we'll discover how a country stays dry when nearly half of its land is below sea level. Over centuries, the Dutch created an immense system of dams, barriers, and dikes for protection from the North Sea — the Deltaworks. We'll explore these feats of modern engineering, culminating with a tour of one of earth's largest moving structures — the Maeslant storm surge barrier — and a better appreciation of the fragility of the Low Countries. We'll continue on to the traditional Dutch town of Delft for an orientation walk and dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Delft.

Day 7: Delectable Delft

This morning we'll take a walking tour with a local who will give us a personal introduction to Vermeer's hometown, including the massive, Gothic New Church (when available), where generations of the ruling House of Orange are buried and revered. We'll also visit a workshop to discover the qualities that make Delftware so dear. The rest of your day is free to explore the many other charms of Delft or to take a short tram ride to The Hague — where you can view paintings by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Rubens at the Mauritshuis — or travel back to an 1880 seaside at the Panorama Mesdag.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Delft.

Day 8: Tulips, Countryside, and Bustling Amsterdam

We'll begin our day in Europe's biggest building — filled with acres of flowers — learning about the worldwide distribution of beauty that begins each day at the Aalsmeer Flower Auction. Then we'll stop for lunch on our way into Amsterdam. Upon arrival, we'll dodge bicycles and hipsters on our neighborhood orientation walk, as we adjust to the pace of this progressive world capital. We'll end our day with a traditional rijsttafel dinner together.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Amsterdam.

Day 9: Vibrant and Historic Amsterdam

This morning, we'll get chummy with Amsterdam's gabled houses, bridges, and canals while learning why the Golden Age glimmered so brightly here. We'll take a historic tour through the heart of the city, stopping to visit the Anne Frank House for a thought-provoking look at the hideaway of Anne and her family during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. The rest of the day is yours to tackle any number of Amsterdam's wonderful museums.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Amsterdam.

Day 10: Amsterdam's Art

We'll start the day with a thrill: getting up-close and personal with the Dutch masters on our tour of Amsterdam's remarkable Rijksmuseum. You can continue your encounter with artistic genius at the nearby Van Gogh Museum* — home to 200 of Vincent's works — or enjoy the nearby charm of Vondelpark. This evening we'll meet for our farewell dinner, where we'll share memories and toast new friends. Proost!

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Amsterdam.

Day 11: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport is an easy bus ride away. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Tot ziens!

  2. Sleep comfortably in historic canal houses with several flights of steep, narrow staircases to reach your room, with street noise and no (or weak) air conditioning.
  3. Be on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours, indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
  4. After orientation and transportation lessons, be able to navigate towns and cities on your own.

I didn’t feel this was one of better RS tours I’ve been on. The Textile Factory visit was too long. I was also very disappointed in our hotel in Delft, not having a private bathroom was almost a deal breaker for me.

The tour did exactly what the itinerary said it would, plus extra surprises along the way, thanks to our tour guide, Ruby!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Seeing the Delta Works in the Netherlands was one of my best moments. The engineering is amazing and yet so simple a solution to sea level rise, which is also a big problem where I live in the US."

Overall the tour was "very good". The guides were all knowledgeable and friendly. Even our bus driver was great to have a conversation with. I enjoyed all of the people I came into contact with as part of the tour. Only a couple items kept me from rating the overall your as "outstanding". At some locations I felt we were a little rushed. That's to be expected I suppose when there is a lot of ground to cover. The other item was that one of the hotels was sub-par and another was borderline.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were so many "wow" moments that it's hard to choose just one. If I had to pick one it would be the World War 1 cemeteries. We saw a small American cemetery and much larger British and German cemeteries. They were all remarkable. I was struck at how the Belgian people still to this day lovingly look upon the soldiers buried in the Flanders Field American Cemetery."

The tour guide, Ruby, was awesome. She was very informative, helpful, and friendly. The local/city guides were just as awesome. The hotels were, of course, different from what I am used to. Overall, they were acceptable except for one, which was dirty. Different is ok, dirty is not.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite wow moment was the Anne Frank House. Visiting the Anne Frank House was one of the major reasons for booking the tour. I loved the chocolate shop demonstration and the brewery tours. "

Everything was wonderful from start to finish. I so appreciate all the careful advance planning and organization that RS Europe and its staff put into the amazing itinerary. Our spectacular guide, Nina, was on top of every detail, so kind, gracious, and attentive to the needs of everyone in our group. She shared helpful tips, information, and anecdotes that enhanced the experience along the way. Each hotel was unique, centrally located with excellent, caring staff and delicious breakfasts.

"Each stop along the way was its own “peak experience.” Some “wow” moments: visiting the WWI memorials (and trenches) in Flanders Fields; seeing artistic masterpieces in museums and churches throughout Belgium and the Netherlands; visiting the Deltaworks and the Maeslant storm surge barrier; the beautiful, peaceful canals. It was a very good tour with many interesting people on our tour with us. We all got along quite well and learned more about each other as we went. Our tour guide Nina was so engaging and knowledgeable about all the places we went and our guides in each city were excellent also.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"So many, how to pick one! I think for me was the astounding amount of people on all manner of bikes and how they were so serious about their ride. I was truly amazed at hearing the number of bikes through the tunnel in Amsterdam per day! 18,000!!! Incredible! The museum above it was my favorite and I could go there every day! The museum about the flood in 1953 was an eye opener. Then going to see one of the massive flood gates was amazing. I also found the flower market a logistics miracle."

Overall, the tour experience was very good. Our fellow travelers were diverse, easygoing, and always on time. The guide and driver (who joined us on tours and helped the guide with logistics) were very good. The bus rides were short. The local guides ranged from good to superb. The pace was good and sufficient "free" time to pursue one's own interests was included. What keeps the tour from being outstanding was the size of the group - 27 is too many -- hard to keep together.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"For me, the event that stands out was the guide (Matthew) who gave the tour in the Rijksmuseum. The way he explained how history, politics, and religion were reflected in the art style of the paintings was great, as was his explanations of how to read the paintings. He made the paintings much more meaningful. And he was very engaged with our group, demonstrating interest in us and our reactions. "

Our guide Nico was the sunshine for our tour. While spring is sometimes chilly, damp & cloudy, Nico was always positive, upbeat & informative - he made every day interesting and fun no matter the weather. Belgium and the Netherlands, with all their picturesque canals, gardens of tulips, and decorative narrow building styles, and Golden Age influence, was absolutely lovely to visit and learn about.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"As global warming threatens our coastal cities in the US, I was interested in the bold waterworks that keep Belgium and the Netherlands protected. Enroute from Brugge to Delft, we passed miles of canals (in cities, surrounding neighborhoods, between country farms – everywhere), and two surge barriers. Neeltje Jans barrier (Zeeland) only active when the surge is expected at 9-10 feet. And we walked under and around one arm of the giant Maeslant barrier (Rotterdam.) Imagine the engineering - Wow!"

I really enjoyed the tour. This is my second tour, my first was Sicily. So I am comparing Holland and Belgium to Sicily, maybe that’s not fair? Our guide, Tim was great. Hotels were for the most part very good. We really enjoyed our group dinners and the food was excellent.

This was my first Rick Steves Tour. I was so very impressed with everything. Especially that the focus was on learning and engaging with the culture, history, and realities of the places we visited, and not making them mythical stories.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Flanders Fields was so moving. I had a relative who had been in the conflict. Traveling around on a rainy, cold day enhanced the experience. The local guide was excellent and answered all the questions and showed both sides of the conflicts and how amazingly the Belgians have memorialized this for future generations of their citizens and us visitors. The meal we had was perfect along with the barn full of relics. "

This tour was beyond expectation! Our guide, Tim, set high standards and modeled high standards without seeming at all pushy. The group respected him as well as each other. The tour had a perfect balance between engaged, focused activities and time off for individual pursuits. Top notch!!!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite “moment” was the day we visited WWI battlefields in Belgium. Our guide was excellent, for one thing, despite inclement weather and shocking details of war. It will remain with me always…the countryside itself, the evidence of violence, the artifacts thrown up from the past by the movement of the earth, the stories and images from the battleground (ten men blinded by the ravages of mustard gas and holding ontoone another’s shoulders for guidance as they walked in one straight line)."

The tour was just the right blend of group occasions and time to explore by ourselves. Every day had something new and different and it is hard to pick our any one thing. It is a relief to have the tour take care of transportation, choosing hotels and arranging for local guides. Plus picking out what event or sight would be memorable. Many of the things we did, we would not have done on our own (eg candy-making event, ceramics event, guides at the Rijks and at St. Bavos)

As always, RSE Tours curated multiple amazing experiences to introduce our group to Belgium and Holland. The local guides were fantastic, sharing their unique input into their hometowns. Our main guide, Ruby, was professional, well-prepared, articulate, and lots of fun. The tour was educational but fun. It exposed us to the tragedies of WWI and II yet taught us heartwarming stories of courage and resistance. The tour also exposed us to new cultures, architectural styles, and cuisines. LOVED IT!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"When our guide Daniella in Bruges taught us about the wrought-iron metalwork on Bruggian buildings. For years I had wondered why many buildings in Bruges had black wrought-iron vertical bars. She taught us that they were used to hold the wooden beams together between floors, and without them, the beams would collapse! She also taught us that the more ornate these bars, the wealthier the owner; that is why some metalwork is simple, and some are more artistic. Fascinating! "

"Two activities were “wow” moments for me. The first was visiting the WWI cemeteries and trenches in Flanders with excellent local guide André - so sobering and thought provoking. Ellen, our tour guide, was fantastic as was the entire group. Springtime in Belgium & the Netherlands did not disappoint as we saw historic cities (Ghent, Bruges, Delft & Amsterdam), somber sites (WW1 battlefields and cemeteries, and innovative water control engineering (Flexible Dam system and Maeslant storm surge barrier). Finally, we finished the tour with the tulips in Keukenhof Garden and the always alive Amsterdam. So much fun and so many new memories!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"So many to choose from. Obviously, the tulips in Keukenhof was one wow moment - so many colors and so much work that goes into the garden. I liked the tour guide very much. I have dietary concerns and he was very helpful. My friend fell the day before the trip started. The tour was well constructed. I wondered why we skipped Brussels - until I met Ghent and Bruges (really good choices if we only have time for 2 cities). The hotels were well situated. There was a good balance of group events and independent exploration.

This is Barry Dreher, husband of Lucinda Dreher. I am wondering why Lucinda (Cindy) was invited to complete a tour survey, but I was not. Cindy WILL be completing her survey, but I copied it over to my email so I could participate in my own words. We participated in 11 days in Belgium and Holland. Our tour guide was Nico. The overall experience from the minute we signed up until the last day was exceptional. We were advised what to do when to prepare, we saw things I never thought I would enjoy seeing, we met amazing people, the pace was great, and Nico was absolutely stellar. He made the trip for us. We are in our early 50s and the average age of this tour was much higher which worried us at first, but proved to be no problem at all.

Favorite "WOW" moment

Well it started off great. Group was really coming together and have fun - despite the unseasonal heat in Belgium and lack of AC in 2nd & 3rd hotels. But sadly, COVID was there from the beginning and by the end took out 15 of the 27 people on the tour. First 2 couples left the morning of day 4 and it just got worse from there. Our guide, Ellen, tried to help as each of us were dropped from the tour but she had a lot on her plate. Some older, less tech-savvy, people had a really hard time.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The group meals that we were able to attend before dropping out were very, surprisingly, good. I loved the 1st hotel in Ghent as it was new and had wonderful accommodations. Sadly, the fun bar where many of us got to know each other was probably one of the early superspreader locations."

I am answering for my husband, John, as well as myself. Overall we enjoyed our trip. On our previous RS trip (Best of Venice, Florence, Rome) we found the cities each to be unique and we learned much at each city. On this trip, Ghent, Bruges and Delft were all the same...canals, cobblestones, belfry, town hall, etc. with Amsterdam being a larger and busier version. Nina was a knowledgeable guide sharing her Belgian heritage. The bus transportation was smooth in the capable hands of Rene.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We were most moved by the cemetaries and trenches of Eiper. This was not history from centuries ago, but in our parents/grandparents lifetime. We also were impressed with the hospitality of many. While in Amsterdam we were waiting for a tram which was very delayed. Luce, a retired local woman, took us on the metro, escorted us to the Resistance Museum, and then indicated where to pick up the tram on the way back."

A good trip (our third Rick Steves tour)! A high level of quality throughout. HOWEVER, not being able go to the Aalsmeer Flower Auction (closed on Pentecost Monday) was a big disappointment. I think the RS staff should have known about this way in advance and rearranged the dates of the whole tour if necessary or swapped some dates within the tour itself (use one of the Amsterdam days to go). The substitute activities were nice (canoeing, visiting the little Dutch town) but not very exciting.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"1. The Deltaworks on the North Sea. The Maeslant storm surge barrier was a feat of modern engineering and a work of art. It was thrilling to see human ingenuity used to solve real-time problems as well as possibly problems related to climate change in the future. 2. Art in Amsterdam: (1) The Van Gogh Museum (saw its special exhibition on the last two months of Van Gogh's life--76 paintings in 70 days); (2) the Vermeer exhibit. Would recommend that RS tours specifically include the VG Museum."

This was my first Rick Steves tour and I had an incredible time! It was a wonderful way to experience two similar yet different countries with plenty of guidance to carry me through when exploring on my own. Our main guide, Ellen, bus driver, Rene, and every local guide were wonderful and always happy to help! We were unable to make the flower auction due to an observed holiday and instead were treated to a local canoe trip North of Amsterdam - truly an unexpected highlight!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I really enjoyed all the historical aspects of the tour. The afternoon spent with Andre in and around Ypres is an experience I've been retelling countlessly, as is the sheer size and engineering of the Deltaworks, the art museums/belfries/churches/guild houses - all of it was exciting to learn about and to soak in each day. The smaller museums in the Netherlands were great supplements to the main tours, such as the Dutch Resistance museum in Amsterdam and the Vermeer Center in Delft. "

Overlooked for more "popular" counties, the lowlands of Belguim and Neatherlands are an absolute must see with the centuries old connecting canals and dedicted paved bike trails / lanes in both rural and urban areas.. English is spoken everywhere. Two of the 4 hotels are located on canals. Keukenhof Gardens (south of Amsterdam) is the Tulip capital of the world, and are stunning in beauty and content. Chocolates / beer / friies (french fries). My 6th RSE Tour and rated #2 (N. Italy is #1).

My first guided tour ever although we always used Rick Steves guides. Tour exceeded my expectations in every way. Our time was used wisely, we covered a lot in usually short, varying visits to itinerary places AND unexpected add-ons. Lots of walking which is how I like to spend my days, blocks of free time to continue that with a like-minded person I met on tour. Nico is an exceptional guide and even though the Rick Steves ethos is you're responsible for yourself, made me feel taken care of.

With no preconceived thoughts on what to expect, I fell in love with the Netherlands and Belgium. We have friends who have traveled parts of these countries, but none of them saw and experienced all of the intricacies of the towns, the way the people live, the priorities of the cultures, the details and stories of the WWI and WWII times. The tour allows time to mix with locals in small cafes, shops, and the hotels. Because we spent 3 nights in several hotels, the staff became part of experience

"Maeslant barrier tour. The realization of what the brilliance and ingenuity of the Dutch is amazing. The young man who spoke with us and toured us was excellent. This experience made me aware, at every canal, at every turn where water is contained or land reclaimed …..how brilliant the Dutch are. The lands of Belgium and Holland are beautiful. That’s my every day WOW."

We had a great time visiting Belgium and the Netherlands. Our tour group was very positive and got along well. The tour its self was well paced with good guided trips and adequate time on our own to explore. We had too many adventures to recount here, but everything was well planned and positive. Our guide Nico, was outstanding. Our meals were yummy. We found the people very friendly and ready to help tourists. What beautiful scenery, etc. Delightful!

This was our sixth Rick Steve's tour and it was one of the best. The itinerary gave us a real appreciation of the Low Country--its unique beauty, strong culture and heritage, and its embrace of life and living. Our guide, Tim, was great! He was not only knowledgeable, but engaging and fun. His alchemy brought out the best in our group.

"The tulip festival in Keukenhof was amazing. We timed our tour dates so we could see it, and it didn't disappoint. Kudos to Rick for giving us plenty of time to see everything. Can’t say enough about our visit to Keukenhof….stupendous!"

Ruby van Engelsdorp Gastelaars was an optimistic and energetic tour guide who was ably assisted by Thomas Cole. Her suggestions for food options led us to enjoy unfamiliar items and the tour's rijsttafel was outstanding. We found time to see "Girl With a Pearl Ear Ring" at the Mauritshaus Museum and obtained the 9 AM Time slot for the Vermeer retrospective as well as a first entry visit to the Van Gogh Museum. This was my first Rick Steves tour. It was an even better than I expected, and that is saying a lot! I had been waiting to take this tour for more than three years. I traveled solo, and it was an amazing trip! My tour guide, Nina, was excellent, as were most of the local guides. My tour companions were fun and interesting people, and I met new friends. Overall this was a worthwhile and enjoyable tour that gave some insight into the history that developed the culture of Belgium and the Netherlands. This tour had so much to offer! History, art, gardens, food, fabulous photo ops, climate change solutions... In fact, my suggestion is that it is too short. The tour never visited French-speaking Belgium, Antwerp or most of the Netherlands. You should break the trip in two and have one trip for Belgium and another for the Netherlands. Coordinate the schedule so that enthusiasts could take them back-to-back!

"Favorite WOW moment was in Ghent when Nico took us the long way to the planned dinner and told us to find our way back to the hotel. During the walk, he had told us to discover the city, walk down some quiet streets and see what you discover. We knew our trip was going to be outstanding when our group met our tour leader, Ruby. She set the whole tone by being fun, flexible and always able to answer a question or handle a concern. "Though I enjoyed seeing the tulips blooming, my Wow moment may been visiting Flanders Field in Belgium. May we never forget the soldiers that died so long ago. One advantage of a RS tour is the free time. The once in a lifetime Vermeer tour should have been on the company’s radar. Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Brussels (BRU) and out of Amsterdam (AMS) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. It's a 1 to 1½ -hour train ride from the Brussels airport to Ghent (where the tour begins). Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Europe.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves guidebook.
