Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Ireland

Meet your guide and fellow tour members at our hotel at 5 p.m. After a group meeting, we'll enjoy a "Welcome to Ireland" dinner together, followed by an orientation walk through the heart of Dublin.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Dublin.

Day 2: The Historic Heart of Dublin

This morning we'll take a walking tour through Dublin, including a stop at Trinity College for an illuminating look at the remarkable Book of Kells, a creative jolt that helped pull Europe out of the Dark Ages. We'll continue on, learning about the city's rich history, from the days of Viking raids to the hard centuries of British occupation to the proud and progressive city of today. You'll have the rest of the day free to feel the pulse of a city thriving with street poets and musicians.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Dublin.

Day 3: Kilmainham Gaol and Monumental Ruins

On our way out of Dublin, we'll stop at Kilmainham Gaol and learn about its place in Ireland's stirring struggle for independence a little more than a century ago. Then we'll continue to the green Plain of Tipperary, and the Rock of Cashel. We'll tour Cashel's evocative ruins and the cluster of medieval buildings that became a major ecclesiastical center of Ireland. Our day will end with dinner together in the picturesque harbor town of Kinsale.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Kinsale.

Day 4: Kinsale and Charles Fort

This morning we'll be treated to a walking tour that brings Kinsale's past to life, places its story in the wider sweep of history, and makes the stony sights much more than buildings. Inspired by all we've learned, we'll continue on to explore the massive and revolutionary (for its time) Charles Fort, which overlooks the harbor. You'll have the afternoon and evening free to make your own discoveries in Kinsale, known as Ireland's gourmet capital.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: ½ hour. Sleep in Kinsale.

Day 5: Killarney National Park and Dingle

Today we'll take a scenic drive along the forests (Ireland's largest), mountains, and lakes of Killarney National Park. Then we'll balance-off this peacefulness with a visit to a local sheep farm, marveling at its talented dogs in action. We'll end our day in Dingle, where we'll enjoy dinner together in one of the country's best traditional music scenes.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Dingle (group may be split between two B&Bs).

Day 6: Gaelic Heritage

It's a great day to experience some of Europe's wildest natural beauty and most ancient Christian sights. We'll start our day with a crystal cutting demonstration from a master craftsman, then hop aboard our bus with a local expert to follow the famous Slea Head Drive, our vote for the most beautiful road in Ireland. We'll stop to tour the strikingly designed Great Blasket Centre, where we'll get an intimate look at the language, literature, and daily life of a traditional Gaelic Blasket community. Tonight, we'll return to Dingle for as much dancing and singing with new friends as we can handle.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Dingle.

Day 7: Roam the Dingle Peninsula

Today is all yours…free on the Dingle Peninsula. Take a long walk along the local paths and lanes, rent a bicycle and pedal the scenic 30-mile Dingle Loop, sail for the day to the rugged Blasket Islands, or simply savor your generous Irish breakfast and hang out in town.

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No bus. Sleep in Dingle.

Day 8: Cliffs of Moher and the Burren

This morning we'll drive through County Clare to the dramatic Cliffs of Moher, where you'll find yourself leaning into the wind and teetering on the very edge of Europe more than 600 feet above the churning waters of the North Atlantic. Farther up the road, we'll explore the rocky moonscape of the Burren to learn about its unique ecosystem and hardy prehistoric residents. Tonight we'll share dinner together in Galway.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Galway.

Day 9: Galway and the Aran Islands

This morning we'll hop aboard a ferry bound for the stark beauty of Inishmore, the largest of the Aran Islands. There you can join your guide for a minibus tour 'round this dramatic island, including the site of its ancient, cliff-hanging Celtic fortress, Dun Aengus. Or, you'll have plenty of time to set out on foot, hire a pony cart, or pedal a bike to explore this windswept island on your own.

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). Boat: 2 hours. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Galway.

Day 10: Connemara Countryside

Today we'll drive through the Connemara region, enjoying the beautiful Irish countryside. We'll stop in the charming town of Cong (where Maureen O'Hara and John Wayne filmed The Quiet Man in 1951), stroll through the picturesque abbey ruins, and visit the School of Falconry at Ashford Castle. Then we'll drive north to County Mayo and Westport, where we'll settle in for the evening.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Westport.

Day 11: To Northern Ireland

We'll seamlessly cross into Northern Ireland today. In Derry, a local guide will take us on a tour of the town, sharing stories about "the Troubles" and the infamous "Bloody Sunday" of 1972. Then we'll drive on to our nostalgic seaside resort town with time for an evening stroll along the strand and dinner.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep on the Antrim Coast.

Day 12: Antrim Coast

Today we'll explore Northern Ireland's spectacular Antrim Coast, marveling at the bizarre basalt columns and local legends of the Giant's Causeway. Then stop for a look at the romantic ruins of Dunluce Castle, perched precariously on a clifftop overlooking the North Atlantic before testing your nerve teetering across the scenic Carrick-a-Rede rope footbridge (optional, wind permitting). Watch your step while enjoying the fine views and the great seabirds soaring. Then we're off to the capital of the North, Belfast.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Belfast.

Day 13: Belfast and the Titanic

This morning we'll begin our day at the Titanic Belfast visitor experience, located on the very site where the great ship was built. Next, a local guide will board our coach for a rolling tour that takes us through historic Belfast and along reminders of the past decades' Troubles, including the striking political murals of Shankill and Falls Road. The rest of the afternoon is yours to explore more of Belfast. Tonight we'll kick up our heels at a tasty farewell supper together, where we'll share travel memories and toast new friends. Sláinte!

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Belfast.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. You can fly out of Belfast or Dublin's handy airports. For those not ready to return home yet, both cities are a great jumping-off point to Paris, London, Amsterdam, and many other exciting destinations. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Slán leat!

It was my first international tour experience and it far exceeded my expectations. The beauty and history of Ireland should be a must for any traveler. Our guide, Connor, I call him the gentle giant was excellent! Soft spoken, even tempered, with great sense of humor made the experience family like. His pride toward Ireland and in particular the Dingle Peninsula made the visit extra special. He provided a real appreciation for Ireland's love for music with local artists.

"In Dingle, as we relaxed in Milltown House, a rainbow formed over the town across the bay. That image will be the cover for our Ireland scrapbook. We will also feature the kindness of Sean from Dingle Crystal as he went out of his way to provide free transportation from downtown to our B&B. Thanks Sean!"

Very enjoyable trip as it went to beautiful areas and was well organized

Favorite "WOW" moment

"When I realized how great our guide was. Declan was very professional, talented, organized and caring. He played or sang songs that pertained to the areas we drove thru. He was extremely funny when he told us how the people in the south and north talked and his "giant" story was hilarious. He kept us on time and on task yet did it in a very nice manner."

This is our fifth Rick Steves' Europe tour. We absolutely love RS Tours. The intimate experience, outstanding tour guides and seamless logistics make the experience so wonderful. We enjoyed our guide, Declan. He was a wealth of information and was extremely passionate about Ireland, and its history and culture. We did have very unseasonably cold weather, and it was very rainy. This put a bit of a damper on the trip, but luckily; we were blessed with good weather for the Cliffs of Moher!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We were lucky to be blessed with bright and sunny days on the days it mattered. The "wow" moments were experiencing the stunning topographic sights, including the Cliffs of Moher and the GIant's Causeway. We were able to experience crossing the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge in Antrum County. Declan also led us on a longer "red trail" at the Giant's Causeway, and it was neat to see the grounds in more detail. We also loved visiting Belfast. The Titanic Museum was incredible - so much information"

We did 3 tours back to back - unfortunately the other two emails have expired as I waited until we got home - but in 7 weeks we did not have one bad day. Turkey was amazing, more than I imagined, Tylan was a super guide -lots of history information and fun - Greece was my bucket list. Athens was nice and loved the way up to the Parthenon but was glad to get out of the city. Heatwave hit when we were there up to 105F - Dafni was a gem, then on to Ireland where Pascal made everyone welcome

What an amazing RSE tour! (This was our 10th!) From Pascal’s wonderful stories, to Pamela’s excellent driving skill, our friendly, cohesive tour group, the proud, brave sheep dogs, the memorable falconry experience, the scrumptious food at Out of the Blue in Dingle, Coco in Belfast, and Mr Deans in Belfast, to the fabulous museums and gardens, and Susie’s poignant Titanic story. This tour far surpassed my expectations!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Seeing side-by-side exhibits of the two Caravaggios in Belfast and the two Vermeers in Dublin! And we were also totally blown away with the friendliness of the Irish people, the beauty of their country, and their amazing restaurants. Of course, our RSE team of Pascal, Pamela, all the city guides, the hotels, and the team back in Redmond, gave us worry free, fun filled travel, which is a “wow” blessing to be sure. The people we were traveling with were all wonderful. Lots and lots of great conversations over breakfast, over lunches, over dinner, on the bus…..There were 28 of us, enough to keep it interesting. And, no one was late, ever! We always left on time. The people made it a great tour. I loved the food offered during the group meals! I felt the venues worked extraordinarily hard to make delicious, well presented meals, like 4 star restaurants. Big spreads for breakfast every morning. All good!

"Ireland is a beautiful island! But I was really enchanted by Ashford Castle, and the School of Falconry. The castle is amazing, so big. The grounds are extensive, and well maintained. The old growth trees in the forest are something to see. It was so peaceful there. And being able to catch and hold a falcon was a memorable moment, then to watch it take off from my hand…so beautiful. That was my “wow” moment!"

First time in Ireland. The people are conspicuously friendly and the natural wonders are second only to ours. The hotels on this tour were much nicer than the Best of Italy. The food was surprisingly good. I read the Rick Steves book and thought I was prepared, but the history lessons on the tour were unforgettable. They were exactly what I needed, when I needed it. The tour guide and tour guide were a fantastic team. Enjoyed Italy, but I love Ireland and plan to return with the RS book.

As a younger person I was nervous about a group tour since we tend to be a lot more independent in our traveling. Overall, I loved learning about the history of Ireland and Northern Ireland and love that every site (minus a few extras) helped us understand everything a little better. There were a few places I wish we had more time to explore, but I understand that the logistics of getting a large group to a new place in time is important. Great experience!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The natural sites were the most memorable for me, personally. Getting out of the city to explore more than the hustle and bustle was a highlight for me. It was excellent! Our tour guide Pascal is such a personable man with great stories, a rich Irish history and a quick wit and sense of humor that he made everyone feel quite relaxed and comfortable and therefore made the group dynamics very fun. Even though I arrived a day early I wish I had more time in Dublin to really enjoy the museums and other attractions. I personally didn't care for Galway (dirty and not much of an Irish feel). Group meals were great except for Hotel Europa.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Walking alone in the cold early morning mist to the Dingle Lighthouse I met an elderly gentleman collecting Kerry stones along the shore. I said good morning and he asked if I had come out for a swim. I laughed and said no, just a walk. We ended up talking about many things over the next 20 minutes, about his family and Ireland's history, how his great grandfather died in Andersonville prison and the state of world affairs. He was a very kind man I felt then that I made a real Irish connection."

The people in the tour group we were with were fun and great conversationalists, every meal together was a social event. It was a great time.

This was my first organized tour of any kind; I prefer traveling on my own. I thought we saw a good variety of sites and cities around the country. Hotels were very centralized. I didn't like the limited options of the group dinners. I thought the schedule seemed a bit rushed in certain areas, specifically the more nature-oriented areas. The bus was comfortable and spacious and the tour guide was great.

This was my first RSE tour and everything exceeded my expectations. Every recommended pub or site or event that we took advantage of was spot on fabulous. Many of our own explorations likewise ended up being great spots that our guide confirmed had been excellent choices on our parts. The locations for the tour covered all the highlights of Ireland and our guide added just the right amount of context and stories to add to the memorable and meaningful experiences.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"As a descendant of Irish immigrants who left during The Great Hunger, the trip through the Doo Lough Valley with the brief stop at the memorial to those who perished in their 12-mile walk to seek food assistance was touching and heart-wrenching. Pascal retold their story in a respectful and meaningful way. Additionally, the way NI has progressed following the GFA and The Troubles gives me hope that all humans may some day be able to move beyond such turbulent times. "

I’ll take those memories with me for a long time. "

Best vacation I've ever taken! I toured a star fort at Kinsale, saw bog bodies and Viking artifacts at the National Museum of Archeology in Dublin, and many old cemeteries with Celtic crosses. Our guide, Lynn, was fabulous as were the local guides. This was my 5th RS tour yet I was unprepared for just how much bus time there would be. So much “on and off the bus.” Too much time in Dingle and not nearly enough at the Cliffs of Moher. While the cities we stayed in made sense in order to accomplish an overview, I did not enjoy Portrush. Loved Northern Ireland-both the scenery and history. The worst souvenir was Covid. The entire tour was a great adventure. The places we visited, the sites we saw, the people we encountered, and many of the dining experiences were simply unforgettable. Key to all of this was an outstanding guide. Joe was extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of Irish life, history, and culture. He made very creative use of audio and other resources on the bus to prepare us for what were going to see and do. The local guides were also exemplary.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It was kind of a collective "wow" moment that hit me late in the trip. What really jelled for me was the sense of how the history, geography, climate, and arts and culture of Ireland come together to influence life in Ireland today and how the Irish people see the world and how they fit into it. This was another reminder to me that the American perspective is not the only one out there. "

The tour was nothing short of fantastic. I had never been on a Rick Steves tour or any group tour and did not really know what to expect. Seeing Ireland with Rick Steves was the absolutely best decision. I did so much and learned so much that I could never have accomplished on my own. Plus it was fun to travel with people who also wanted to get to know Ireland. I was having such a great time that in the evenings I found myself reviewing Rick Steves offerings for 2025, planning my next trip!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It's impossible to name just one. I'll mention Kinsale because it was early in our trip and was a charming, beautiful seaside village. I very much enjoyed learning about the connection to the the sinking of the Lusitania, seeing the graves and the building where the inquiry was held. For history junkies--ancient and recent--the Rick Steves 14-day tour of Ireland is one long learning high."

Our tour guide Pascal and Driver Mark, made our tour of Ireland throughly enjoyable. This tour was one of the best RS tours I have taken. Guide Pascal clearly loves his job and was always there to answer questions and provide the history of Ireland. Mark, our driver, got us to each location ahead of the crowds and was the perfect sidekick to Pascal. I was amazed by the history and suffering of the Irish people. Learning about the famine and how Irish people had to emigrate to survive was eye opening. The scenery is breathtaking and the pubs and Irish music added to the allure.

We had an awesome guide, Deklan, who interacted very well with our group and provided great information on our sites. He went above and beyond to explain what we were seeing. Our biggest concern was that on the first day a traveler in our group came down with COVID. His wife had been sick the week before our trip. The illness traveled through the bus and caused loss of time on the days of the trip. This was very disappointing, since we paid dearly for the opportunity to see Ireland.

Driving the entire perimeter of the island gave us the chance to explore a variety of experiences and take in the Irish culture. Every stop, every hotel, every meal, was well chosen.

Our tour was packed with experiences we would not have easily found for ourselves, gave time for our own exploration, and gave us our excellent guide, Conor, and our outstanding driver, Paul.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite experiences were all of the small group musical opportunities we had in Dingle. Conor’s connections to musicians made for intimate experiences that were easier to feel comfortable in than trying to appreciate Irish jamming in noisy bars where you couldn’t hear the music over the din of the crowd’s conversations."

Let me preface this by saying that both my wife and I both got sick on this tour,(R.T.I.) respiratory tract infection, which kind of slowed us down in keeping up with the tour somewhat. There might have been a 'grump' that weaseled their way onto the tour but mostly a good group of people. We liked most of the stops on the tour. The tour was outstanding throughout. Although my wife and I are no strangers to international travel, we had not previously done a fully organized tour -- the closest having been the My Way Alpine Europe in 2018 which we loved. Favorite "WOW" moment

I would have to say that this was one of the best travel experiences I have had. Our tour guide Cathie was well versed in the history, culture, folklore, and music of Ireland and wove it all together seamlessly from start to finish. Along with all of the included tours there was also lots of free time to explore on your own at some stops and hike along the coast, have a conversation with the locals at a pub, or explore the town further on your own, all of which added to the magic of the trip.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"If I have to pick one "wow" moment I would say it was crossing the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge and seeing the gorgeous views of the blue-green water and the scenery on the small island. It was spectacular. Cathie's beautiful singing along the way, the friendliness of the Irish people, the toast at the famine memorial, and even a string quartet candlelight Coldplay tribute concert in a church dating to the 1200's which we stumbled upon on our free day in Galway. Our tour experience was fantastic. We knew we would like Ireland but were not prepared to LOVE it as much as we did. Although I didn't walk the bridge, the beauty and "feel" of these areas were worthy of many wows. Having a tour guide that can give you history of the area you're traveling through, but not make it a "history" lesson was nice. I enjoyed the diverseness of activities, the free time to explore or shop or even just to rest. The other people on the tour were friendly and easy to talk to. Having extra tour guides versed in the different areas we visited was a bonus I think. I enjoyed the whole experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I don't have a specific "wow" moment, more like several moments. The Cliffs of Moher, Dun Aengus fortress on Inishmore and the Titanic Belfast visitor center stand out. I also really enjoyed watching the sheep dogs work. Visiting the School of Falconry and getting to handle a falcon was really awesome. I liked being on the bus and just watching the countryside roll by, giving me a good sense of what Ireland looks like."

Great guide with Paul and Bus driver Stephen. Very good variety of activities to create a good picture from the past to the future in Ireland. There was time to explore on your own and I think that is important. meeting new people on the tour was great.

This was my wife and my first “organized” tour. We were hesitant to have our time scripted by someone else. We couldn’t have been more pleased with our time in Ireland. The small group size, our fabulous tour lead, Paul, and our courteous and competent bus driver Steven, all contributed to a first class experience. We will definitely consider Rick Steve’s tours for future European vacations. The focus on encouraging tour members to bond made for a fun tour we will remember fondly.

This was our first Rick Steves' tour, and we were beyond impressed. Pascal was a fantastic guide, host, organizer, and above all storyteller!! Every day, he had history or stories, or personal stories to share about Ireland, its history, both good and bad. He made outstanding suggestions for food, where to hear live music, arranged for dinners and lunches and maintained a warm, and charming demeanor. Ask him about the Horsebox! Driver Steve was also outstanding and fun to spend time with.

Outstanding tour and guide. Pascal was tremendous and extremely knowledgeable about the towns, history and places to visit during our tour. The man deserves a raise in pay for this one. He earned it. Just sayin. Its also a little breezy there. lol.

I suggest the Dingle guide put the viewing of famous stained glass in the cathedral earlier in the tour - we missed out as it was closed when we arrived.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There are many "wow" moments. The falconry experience at Ashford Castle is unforgettable. I am biased because I am a "bird person". The staff member was very knowledgeable and a joy to listen to - loved it. The day on Inishmoor was special too - the hike to the fort and van tour was unique. The intimate evening of Irish music and dancing with the O'Shea father and sons was unforgettable!!! The Blasket Island experience was very interesting-I would return there. Cliffs of Mohar...awesome! "

Ireland lives up to the hype: 40 shades of green, friendly Irish pubs, music, dancing, traditional Irish food, the Cliffs of Moher, the barren island of Inishmore.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were many. One was when I found my surname and the Gaelic version on an interactive display at the Cliffs of Moher. For the first time I had solid evidence of my Irish roots. Number two may have been the Cliffs of Moher. Number three the Island of Inishmore. "

From the beginning to the end, our experience in Ireland was wonderful. Our guide, Joe was phenomenal and made our trip and experience that we will never forget. Our driver, Stephen did an excellent job of navigating us all over the country. We enjoyed all of the establishments that we stayed in and all of the activities that we did either alone or as a group were great.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I’m not sure that I could choose one “wow” moment as there were so many things that we did or saw that were amazing. The little towns were by far my favorite and certainly enjoyed the charm and friendliness of everyone we encountered. The sheep herding stop was definitely a highlight along with the Cliffs of Moher were certainly at the top of my list. Dingle was my favorite stop/town and could see myself going back there sometime. More than I expected. Transportation, lodging, meals, planned sites, tour host, bus driver, and guides could not have been more enjoyable. The weather did not disappoint either (rain, rain, rain) but we were told to expect this and we managed quite well. Everyone should take this tour.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I loved all the beauty and sites of the island. The greenness and history. Loved the castle ruins and stained glass windows in all the cathedrals. No particular “wow” moment. Loved it all."

"Too many to count. Maybe walking with our straining umbrellas in Storm Babet to dinner at the Actons Hotel in Kinsale, arriving soaking wet. It was so ridiculous and fun ultimately. Our group just kept on keeping on! I am not one of those people who engage in best, favorite or first type questions. I find amazing everywhere every day."

This was my first Rick Steve’s tour. I’ve traveled using Rick’s book for years and watched his travel programs, so figured I’d be happy.Actually being on one of his tours was amazing! There is no way, on our own that my husband and I would have seen all the sights we did or learn all the history of an area that we did. The personal stories shared by the guides, the daily diversions from the schedule, made every day an unforgettable adventure. We can’t wait to plan another trip with Rick Steve’s.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The landscapes of Ireland constantly took my breath away. The comradaree that developed among the group of total strangers was a surprise. On our group was passing into Northern Ireland, our trip guide, Joe, had our driver divert to a beautiful spot where we all disembarked to toast a goodbye and thank you to a most beautiful country and experience. Of course it was rainy but the weather just fit the occasion and how we all felt in leaving."

When To Go & Weather

Any time between April and October is a good time to visit Ireland. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for offering fewer crowds, mild weather, and the full range of tourist fun. Summers come with longer days and better (yet still mild) weather, but larger crowds, which mostly affect Dublin.

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly in and out of Dublin (DUB). If you prefer to fly out of Belfast (BFS), select "multicity" on flight-booking websites. The coach from Belfast direct to Dublin Airport takes about two hours and departs hourly 24 hours a day. Your guide can help you book it when you arrive.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Ireland guidebook.
