Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Ireland

Meet your guide and fellow tour members at our hotel at 5 p.m. After a group meeting, we'll enjoy a "Welcome to Ireland" dinner together, followed by an orientation walk through the heart of Dublin.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Dublin.

Day 2: The Historic Heart of Dublin

This morning we'll take a walking tour through Dublin, including a stop at Trinity College for an illuminating look at the remarkable Book of Kells, a creative jolt that helped pull Europe out of the Dark Ages. We'll continue on, learning about the city's rich history, from the days of Viking raids to the hard centuries of British occupation to the proud and progressive city of today. You'll have the rest of the day free to feel the pulse of a city thriving with street poets and musicians.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Dublin.

Day 3: Kilmainham Gaol and Monumental Ruins

On our way out of Dublin, we'll stop at Kilmainham Gaol and learn about its place in Ireland's stirring struggle for independence a little more than a century ago. Then we'll continue to the green Plain of Tipperary, and the Rock of Cashel. We'll tour Cashel's evocative ruins and the cluster of medieval buildings that became the ecclesiastical center of Ireland. Our day will end with dinner together in the picturesque harbor town of Kinsale.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Kinsale.

Day 4: Kinsale and Charles Fort

This morning we'll be treated to a walking tour that brings Kinsale's past to life, places its story in the wider sweep of history, and makes the stony sights much more than buildings. Inspired by all we've learned, we'll continue on to explore the massive and revolutionary (for its time) Charles Fort, which overlooks the harbor. You'll have the afternoon and evening free to make your own discoveries in Kinsale, known as Ireland's gourmet capital.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: ½ hour. Sleep in Kinsale.

Day 5: Killarney National Park and Dingle

Today we'll take a scenic drive along the forests (Ireland's largest), mountains, and lakes of Killarney National Park. Then we'll balance-off this peacefulness with a visit to a local sheep farm, marveling at its talented dogs in action. We'll end our day in Dingle, where we'll enjoy dinner together in one of the country's best traditional music scenes.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Dingle (group may be split between two B&Bs).

Day 6: Gaelic Heritage

It's a great day to experience some of Europe's wildest natural beauty and most ancient Christian sights. We'll start our day with a crystal cutting demonstration from a master craftsman, then hop aboard our bus with a local expert to follow the famous Slea Head Drive, our vote for the most beautiful road in Ireland. We'll stop to tour the strikingly designed Great Blasket Centre, where we'll get an intimate look at the language, literature, and daily life of a traditional Gaelic Blasket community. Tonight, we'll return to Dingle for as much dancing and singing with new friends as we can handle.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Dingle.

Day 7: Roam the Dingle Peninsula

Today is all yours…free on the Dingle Peninsula. Take a long walk along the local paths and lanes, rent a bicycle and pedal the scenic 30-mile Dingle Loop, sail for the day to the rugged Blasket Islands, or simply savor your generous Irish breakfast and hang out in town.

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No bus. Sleep in Dingle.

Day 8: Cliffs of Moher and the Burren

This morning we'll drive through County Clare to the dramatic Cliffs of Moher, where you'll find yourself leaning into the wind and teetering on the very edge of Europe more than 600 feet above the churning waters of the North Atlantic. Farther up the road, we'll explore the rocky moonscape of the Burren to learn about its unique ecosystem and hardy prehistoric residents. Tonight we'll share dinner together in Galway.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Galway.

Day 9: Galway and the Aran Islands

This morning we'll hop aboard a ferry bound for the stark beauty of Inishmore, the largest of the Aran Islands. There you can join your guide for a minibus tour 'round this dramatic island, including the site of its ancient, cliff-hanging Celtic fortress, Dun Aengus. Or, you'll have plenty of time to set out on foot, hire a pony cart, or pedal a bike to explore this windswept island on your own.

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). Boat: 2 hours. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Galway.

Day 10: Connemara Countryside

Today we'll drive through the Connemara region, enjoying the beautiful Irish countryside. We'll stop in the charming town of Cong (where Maureen O'Hara and John Wayne filmed The Quiet Man in 1951), stroll through the picturesque abbey ruins, and visit the School of Falconry at Ashford Castle. Then we'll drive north to County Mayo and Westport, where we'll settle in for the evening.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Westport.

Day 11: To Northern Ireland

We'll seamlessly cross into Northern Ireland today. In Derry, a local guide will take us on a tour of the town, sharing stories about "the Troubles" and the infamous "Bloody Sunday" of 1972. Then we'll drive on to the nostalgic seaside resort of Portrush, with time for an evening stroll along the strand and dinner.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Portrush.

Day 12: Antrim Coast

Today we'll explore Northern Ireland's spectacular Antrim Coast, marveling at the bizarre basalt columns and local legends of the Giant's Causeway. Then we're off to visit the romantic ruins of Dunluce Castle, perched precariously on a clifftop overlooking the North Atlantic. We'll explore the broken castle while enjoying the fine views and great seabird-watching before continuing on to Belfast.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Belfast.

Day 13: Belfast and the Titanic

This morning we'll begin our day at the Titanic Belfast visitor experience, located on the very site where the great ship was built. Next, a local guide will board our coach for a rolling tour that takes us through historic Belfast and along reminders of the past decades' Troubles, including the striking political murals of Shankill and Falls Road. The rest of the afternoon is yours to explore more of Belfast. Tonight we'll kick up our heels at a tasty farewell supper together, where we'll share travel memories and toast new friends. Sláinte!

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Belfast.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. You can fly out of Belfast or Dublin's handy airports. For those not ready to return home yet, both cities are a great jumping off point to Paris, London, Amsterdam, and many other exciting destinations. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Slán leat!

I felt every day was filled with amazing scenery and experiences. The timing of every day's events was spot on. Joe, our guide, was upbeat, friendly, and sincerely attentive. The concept of the "Happy Half Hour" pub stops is great! The quality of the dinners seemed a notch higher than previous 6 RS tours. The city guides were quite good. I suggest the Dingle guide put the viewing of famous stained glass in the cathedral earlier in the tour - we missed out as it was closed when we arrived.

"There are many "wow" moments. The falconry experience at Ashford Castle is unforgettable. I am biased because I am a "bird person". The staff member was very knowledgeable and a joy to listen to - loved it. The day on Inishmoor was special too - the hike to the fort and van tour was unique. The intimate evening of Irish music and dancing with the O'Shea father and sons was unforgettable!!! The Blasket Island experience was very interesting-I would return there. Cliffs of Mohar...awesome! "

Ireland lives up to the hype: 40 shades of green, friendly Irish pubs, music, dancing, traditional Irish food, the Cliffs of Moher, the barren island of Inishmore.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were many. One was when I found my surname and the Gaelic version on an interactive display at the Cliffs of Moher. For the first time I had solid evidence of my Irish roots. Number two may have been the Cliffs of Moher. Number three the Island of Inishmore. "

More than I expected. Transportation, lodging, meals, planned sites, tour host, bus driver, and guides could not have been more enjoyable. The weather did not disappoint either (rain, rain, rain) but we were told to expect this and we managed quite well. Everyone should take this tour.

From the beginning to the end, our experience in Ireland was wonderful. Our guide, Joe was phenomenal and made our trip and experience that we will never forget. Our driver, Stephen did an excellent job of navigating us all over the country. We enjoyed all of the establishments that we stayed in and all of the activities that we did either alone or as a group were great.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I’m not sure that I could choose one “wow” moment as there were so many things that we did or saw that were amazing. The little towns were by far my favorite and certainly enjoyed the charm and friendliness of everyone we encountered. The sheep herding stop was definitely a highlight along with the Cliffs of Moher were certainly at the top of my list. Dingle was my favorite stop/town and could see myself going back there sometime. This was my first Rick Steve’s tour. I’ve traveled using Rick’s book for years and watched his travel programs, so figured I’d be happy.Actually being on one of his tours was amazing! There is no way, on our own that my husband and I would have seen all the sights we did or learn all the history of an area that we did. The personal stories shared by the guides, the daily diversions from the schedule, made every day an unforgettable adventure. We can’t wait to plan another trip with Rick Steve’s.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The landscapes of Ireland constantly took my breath away. The comradaree that developed among the group of total strangers was a surprise. On our group was passing into Northern Ireland, our trip guide, Joe, had our driver divert to a beautiful spot where we all disembarked to toast a goodbye and thank you to a most beautiful country and experience. Of course it was rainy but the weather just fit the occasion and how we all felt in leaving."

A thorough introduction to Ireland, from the wonderful cities of Dingle, Kinsale and Dublin, to the beautiful rugged coastlines, to the haunting hunger trail. Our guide Joe was incredibly knowledgeable, informative and fun. The hotels were lovely and most of the meals were very good (the only exception was our first hotel dinner at the Europa in Belfast where the food was not good for the 6 vegetarians).

Fabulous tour guide, dawling Joe Burke. Lots of little diversions highlighting all the historical, geographical, and ecological effects that have shaped this country.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Gaining an understanding of the history and challenges that shaped the country and its people. The Cliffs of Moher, Slea Head Drive, Dingle Peninsula, and the Burren were all spectacular sights...so much so that you almost became immune to the beauty of the landscapes, but the resilience, warmth and friendliness of the people, who have faced so many challenges were more inspiring. It was a great and memorable experience because of a very knowledgeable Tour Director, Joe, and very likable tour members. Our Tour Director gave us a lot of Historical, Cultural facts about Ireland. During our walks Joe surprised us by giving the names of plants, trees, flowers that we saw along the way. The sights, sea shore, the castle, the architectures of the places we visited were just astonishing and truly memorable. It was an impressive tour!

This tour offered a fascinating crash course in Irish history, politics, religion, architecture, poetry, song and culture. Since I neglected to do any "summer reading" before the tour, I've already purchased two books to delve further into issues that I didn't realize I knew so little about before this tour. The hotels were all fine. Belfast's Europa Hotel was a perfect end point with the bus stations right next door, sparing us long walks in the teeming rain the morning of departure.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Cliffs of Moher- a gorgeous walk and breathtaking scenery. Strong Second: When a local made a song request for "grace" at a bar in Kinsale and after he exuberantly joined in singing it, I realized it was a song about Grace Gifford, who we had just learned about on our tour of Kilmainham Gaol. Third: the landscape of western Ireland. "

This was the best tour I've ever been on. Our primary guide, Declan and his mentee, Connor were fantastic, knowledgeable, and very fun. A well-laid out, very detailed, and fun itinerary, with excellent accommodations and delicious food. We covered a LOT of territory. There were many places I would have liked to stay longer. There is so much history and so much to learn. But that's how this type of tour is...as a famous comedian once said, "always leave 'em wanting more!" I want more!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We were in Dingle and Declan arranged to have two musicians (guitarist and fiddle player) play our own private Irish music gig. That was great fun. But even better was when our guide Connor joined them and played for a long, merry time. Of course, LOVED visiting so many places e.g., being led on a tour of Kinsale with Barry, another fabulous Rick Steves tour guide. There were so many awesome experiences, it's very difficult pick just one. Cliffs of Moher was outstanding! Too many to note"

In my opinion, this is the best tour format for someone like me (a senior solo traveler). Someone very knowledgeable plans everything and takes care of all the details so I can simply enjoy myself. There is enough flexibility built in to allow for my own special interests. But the key things to see and places to go are pretty much covered by the tour.

This was our first Rick Steves tour and we were very happy with the experience. The people we met at the hotels, restaurants, planned city tours and more were all welcoming. It seemed that the Rick Steves name was well-respected. The bus driver, Dennis, was professional and skilled. I have been the tour coordinator with Cascade Youth Symphony for their past 6 tours, and we have had coaches and drivers similar to this Ireland tour. Dennis ranks as among the best. Pascal was outstanding.

We had a great group of people on the tour and our guide Anne and driver Pamela were Outstanding. We've been on one other tour before through England and Scotland and the tour is great for seeing all the sights with ease and getting the history - the only downside would be that it goes so fast. My husband and I are both 60 years old, recently retired, and have never been on a guided tour before. We loved getting on the bus each morning feeling relaxed, not having to worry about where we were going or how to get there. The other people on the tour were great, very down-to-earth and eager to learn new things. All of the tour guides were great, and we loved Ireland. The only down side is that we gave up some of our freedom and would have liked staying places longer than we were allowed.

This was my second RS tour. As with the first, the best part of the tour was the primary guide, Pascal. On the bus, he delivered a seamless blend of Irish history, humorous anecdotes (cultural and personal), Irish music, and helpful restaurant and site-seeing advice. He always prepared us well for whatever the next tour event was. Since the music was a big draw for me, his personal connections with Irish musicians really made the tour special. Hotels and restaurants were outstanding.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Visually, the drive along the tip of the Dingle peninsula, climbing Dun Aengus on Inishmore and the Antrim coast were the most spectacular. The Cliffs of Moher, of course, also, but there was such a mob of people,it detracted from the wonder. The Slea Head Raod on Dingle made me feel like we’d found the Ireland I had heard about. The two most satisfying moments were the walking tour by Barry in Kinsale and our first dinner in Dingle with two young musicians Pascal had engaged to play for us. "

During our thoroughly enjoyable experience, Joe Darcy, our tour leader, expertly guided us on an immersive journey into Irish history and culture. Comfortably traveling through the beautiful countryside to iconic as well as off the beaten path locations where Joe and local subject experts explained the what and why of yesterday’s and today’s Ireland.

This was our first trip to Ireland, and the tour exceeded our already high expectations. Our guide Joe was very personable and informative and was always ready to make suggestions on entertainment and dining options. The local guides did an excellent job of explaining different portions of Irish history that lead to the past difficulties, and it was good to get multiple perspectives. The scenery was magnificent and the schedules activities gave us a great taste of Irish culture.

"There were many spectacular natural sights, but our favorite was the Giant's Causeway. We have never seen such unique geology and we enjoyed being able to walk on the basalt pillars. The trails that ran up the surrounding cliffs gave excellent overviews of the Causeway and the surrounding coastline. The walk along the top of the cliffs the topper to our morning at the Causeway."

This tour was all I had hoped it would be. From delicious food to incredible sights it fulfilled the vision I'd had in my head for over 4 years. Our guide Joe was great. Booking with Rick Steves for a peak season (and first time) visit to Ireland removed the majority of logistic and busy work of "travelling" and allowed me to focus on "experiencing" Irish culture, history, food and beauty of Ireland and its welcoming people. I learned much history and current events through out guide, Lynn, while we were on the coach. This is a wise use of our time together. I really enjoyed the time I spent with the tour group. Unfortunately, I tested positive for Covid on day 7 of 14, and had to leave the group. This led me to feeling a bit abandoned in Dingle, a fairly remote town with limited local resources. Luckily, my symptoms were mild, like a cold, so I was able to manage getting back to Dublin on my own. I hesitate to think what would have happened had I been more ill.

We enjoyed an interesting, educational and fun tour of some of the most beautiful parts of Ireland. Despite the rain, everyday was one to remember. Ireland’s history is also part of our story, having ancestors that were affected by the famine and ended up in Portland, Oregon. The suffering and sacrifices of previous generations is even better appreciated now. The Irish people were so friendly and hospitable. We loved it!

This is our 2nd "Best of" tour, and I really believe it offers the best value. Looking back at what we saw and learned, it was quite amazing. The trip was well organized, but what really made the difference was our tour guide, Joe. His depth and breadth of knowledge was terrific. But better yet, pointing out places from his childhood, or the ferry co-owned by his cousin, or the pier where his 80-year old grandfather still swims from every morning. Nice touch!

I'm not the only one who talked about this. Your guidebook is fantastic, we always arrive early and stay later gives us way to cover the spots mised

Our tour guide was Paul. He was very personable and did a great job of telling us about the places we visited and various Irish cultural traditions. He was also very good at encouraging tour members to get to know one another so we could better bond as a group. We fell in love with Ireland and plan on going back to see more!

Our first Rick Steves tour and it exceeded expectations. The schedule was very well thought out to balance scheduled time and free time. Our tour guide was exceptional. He managed to sense the groups needs for talking, stories, music and quiet while on the bus. The tour guides used in the various stops were passionate about their sites which has inspired me to read more about the things we saw and the people that lived there. I came away excited to explore more areas of Europe.

This was our (my husband and I) very first group tour of any kind, and we really didn’t know how we would feel traveling with others. I came away with a very positive experience. I loved being able to cover all the coast of Ireland and see and experience so much without the two of us having to drive all that distance. We got to relax on the bus while our amazing driver, Alan, drove us to where we needed to be next. Our tour guide, Paul, was fabulous. He made the trip fun and informative.

My husband and I squeezed into his tiny red car along with his weed eater for a personal tour of town and a lift. Meeting other great travelers!"

I was extremely impressed by the logistics and organization of the tour as well as the level of effort and approachability of the tour guide. Overall excellent historical presentations: I now "understand" Ireland. I felt the tour presented a far more genuine picture of Ireland than might have been presented. Shopping opportunities were available, but I did not feel I was being led to "fleecing stations" I expected far more free time at more convenient hours than what I actually experienced.

Exceptional guide, wonderful travel companions. The itinerary was well-paced, although I could have stayed longer everywhere we went—so much more to see and do! Appreciated the small detours we made to soak up even more of Ireland’s beauty and history. We found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow…it was our tour guide Lolly! The love and pride she has for her homeland was clear. Declan and the local guides were fantastic at explaining and connecting the historical significance of the places we visited. Unfortunately, the accommodations were a real low for us. "So many of them. But if I had to pick one, it would be the church in Derry where John Newton became a Christian, leading to his writing of the hymn “Amazing Grace.” So serendipity and unexpected! But, of course, the natural scenes of the Cliffs of Mohir and the Giants Causeway are right up there, plus everything else."

"So much beautiful scenery. Ashford Castle was wow! Loved the falconry experience. "

When To Go & Weather

Any time between April and October is a good time to visit Ireland. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for offering fewer crowds, mild weather, and the full range of tourist fun. Summers come with longer days and better (yet still mild) weather, but larger crowds, which mostly affect Dublin.

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly in and out of Dublin (DUB). If you prefer to fly out of Belfast (BFS), select "multicity" on flight-booking websites. The coach from Belfast direct to Dublin Airport takes about two hours and departs hourly 24 hours a day. Your guide can help you book it when you arrive.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Ireland guidebook.
