Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Ireland

Meet your guide and fellow tour members at our hotel at 5 p.m. After a group meeting, we'll enjoy a "Welcome to Ireland" dinner together, followed by an orientation walk through the heart of Dublin.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Dublin.

Day 2: The Historic Heart of Dublin

This morning we'll take a walking tour through Dublin, learning about its rich history, from the days of Viking raids to the hard centuries of British occupation to the proud and progressive city of today. We'll end our tour at Trinity College for an illuminating look at the remarkable Book of Kells, a creative jolt that helped pull Europe out of the Dark Ages. You'll have the rest of the day free to feel the pulse of a city thriving with street poets and musicians.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Dublin.

Day 3: Kilmainham Gaol and Ruins

On our way out of Dublin, we'll stop at Kilmainham Gaol and learn about its place in Ireland's stirring struggle for independence less than a century ago. Then we'll continue on to the green Plain of Tipperary, where we'll tour the ecclesiastical center that thrived in St. Patrick's time: the evocative ruins of the Rock of Cashel. Our day will end with dinner together in the picturesque harbor town of Kinsale.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Kinsale.

Day 4: Kinsale and Charles Fort

This morning we'll be treated to a walking tour that brings Kinsale's past to life, places its story in the wider sweep of history, and makes the stony sights much more than buildings. Inspired by all we've learned, we'll continue on to explore the massive and revolutionary (for its time) Charles Fort, which overlooks the harbor. You'll have the afternoon and evening free to make your own discoveries in Kinsale, known as Ireland's gourmet capital.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 1 hour. Sleep in Kinsale.

Day 5: Killarney National Park and Dingle

Today we'll take a scenic drive along the forests (Ireland's largest), mountains, and lakes of Killarney National Park. Then we'll balance-off this peacefulness with a visit to a local sheep farm, marveling at its talented dogs in action. We'll end our day in Dingle, where we'll enjoy a whiskey tasting and dinner together in one of the country's best traditional music scenes.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Dingle (group may be split between two B&Bs).

Day 6: Gaelic Heritage

It's a great day to experience some of Europe's wildest natural beauty and most ancient Christian sights. We'll start our day with a crystal cutting demonstration from a master craftsman, then hop aboard our bus with a local expert to follow the famous Slea Head Drive, our vote for the most beautiful road in Ireland. We'll stop to tour the strikingly designed Great Blasket Centre (when available), where we'll get an intimate look at the language, literature, and daily life of a traditional Gaelic Blasket community. Tonight, we'll return to Dingle for as much dancing and singing with new friends as we can handle.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Dingle.

Day 7: Roam the Dingle Peninsula

Today is all yours...free on the Dingle Peninsula. Take a long walk along the local paths and lanes, rent a bicycle and pedal the scenic 30-mile Dingle Loop, sail for the day to the rugged Blasket Islands, or simply savor your generous Irish breakfast and hang out in town.

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No bus. Sleep in Dingle.

Day 8: Cliffs of Moher and the Burren

This morning we'll drive through County Clare to the dramatic Cliffs of Moher, where you'll find yourself leaning into the wind and teetering on the very edge of Europe more than 600 feet above the churning waters of the North Atlantic. Farther up the road, we'll explore the rocky moonscape of the Burren to learn about its unique ecosystem and hardy prehistoric residents. Tonight we'll share dinner together in Galway.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Galway.

Day 9: Galway and the Aran Islands

This morning we'll hop aboard a ferry bound for the stark beauty of Inishmore, the largest of the Aran Islands. There you can join your guide for a minibus tour 'round this dramatic island, including the site of its ancient, cliff-hanging Celtic fortress, Dun Aengus. Or, you'll have plenty of time to set out on foot, hire a pony cart, or pedal a bike to explore this windswept island on your own.

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). Boat: 2 hours. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Galway.

Day 10: Connemara Countryside

Today we'll drive through the Connemara region, enjoying the beautiful Irish countryside. We'll stop in the charming town of Cong (where Maureen O'Hara and John Wayne filmed The Quiet Man in 1951), stroll through the picturesque abbey ruins, and visit the School of Falconry at Ashford Castle. Then we'll drive north to County Mayo and Westport, where we'll settle in for the evening.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Westport.

Day 11: To Northern Ireland

We'll seamlessly cross into Northern Ireland today. In Derry, a local guide will take us on a tour of the town, sharing stories about "the Troubles" and the infamous "Bloody Sunday" of 1972. Then we'll drive on to the nostalgic seaside resort of Portrush, where we'll have dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Portrush.

Day 12: Antrim Coast

Today we'll explore Northern Ireland's spectacular Antrim Coast, marveling at the bizarre basalt columns and local legends of the Giant's Causeway. Then we're off to visit the romantic ruins of Dunluce Castle, perched precariously on a clifftop overlooking the North Atlantic. We’ll explore the broken castle while enjoying the fine views and great seabird-watching before continuing on to Belfast.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Belfast.

Day 13: Belfast and the Titanic

This morning we'll begin our day at the Titanic Belfast visitor experience, located on the very site where the great ship was built. After lunch, we'll join a local guide for a walking tour of historic Belfast. Then we'll board our coach for a rolling tour that takes us along reminders of the past decades' Troubles, including the striking political murals of Shankill and Falls Road. The rest of the afternoon is yours to explore more of Belfast. Tonight we'll kick up our heels at a tasty farewell supper together, where we'll share travel memories and toast new friends. Sláinte!

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Belfast.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. You can fly out of Belfast or Dublin's handy airports. For those not ready to return home yet, both cities are a great jumping off point to Paris, London, Amsterdam, and many other exciting destinations. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Slán leat!

This was our first Rick Steves tour, and it exceeded my expectations. Our outstanding tour guide, the comaraderie among our tour group members, and the beautiful coastal regions we explored made this a very memorable experience. We completely lucked out with the weather, as it didn't rain until the very end of our tour.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It's really hard to pick only one. I loved the drive along the Antrim Coast in Northern Ireland and particularly enjoyed the hike along the top of the cliffs at the Giant's Causeway, with incredible views of the cliffs and ocean. I really enjoyed the drive along those very narrow, curvy roads through the Connemara countryside and particularly enjoyed our visit to the bog."

We had an awesome experience in Ireland with Lolly and our Rick Steves' tour group. It helped that the weather was very nice and that we got to see and experience many sights. The hotel accommodations were very nice as were the meals. We had enough time on our own and our guide was very helpful in suggesting things to do and how to get there.

Amazing sights and history—and people! Pictures galore; people welcoming, generous, helpful, ready for a good laugh. Most of the guides—top notch! All of my best teachers have opened up large portions of the world. Such teachers have large minds and hearts, which pre-supposes an ability for “digging” into and under the surface of things, for making insightful connections. So it is with our tour guide, Lynne. The tour was full of teachings—and never had long hours of bus-time.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"An abundance of great moments. Gwyneth rounding up the sheep. Joyce, up close & personal, landing & taking off. Scenery consistently beautiful & interesting. Learning about history & ancient structures. The two museums & the glass cutting. Great food and entertainment. The guides’ knowledge & humor—their insights! The whole coastline drive. Some fine outdoor exercise. A bus-load of enjoyable people—with an outstanding driver!"

I learned so much about how life in Ireland from 3,000 BC to present day was impacted by outside forces. I came away with an understanding for how the Irish proudly embrace their roots and actively work to defend & preserve their culture.

The tour was run flawlessly. Our Northern Irish guide Lynn had a great historical understanding and love of her country. She always gave us extra things such as bringing entertainment to our group in Dingle and Belfast plus giving us such great choices of meals on our group dinners! Lynn and our bus driver Allan made our two weeks very special and allowed us all to experience every moment of their beautiful country with love! This is our second Rick Steves tour and it did not disappoint!

"So many WOW moments- the Kissane Sheep Farm and the border collie herding skills, the whole Dingle experience, and the David Geaney dancing(which I had fun dancing in myself) plus the multitude of Irish music experiences! The beautiful town of Kinsale, visiting the Falconry School where Mel introduced us to Joyce the hawk and we each had a chance to receive this beautiful creature on our arm to feed! Most of all the spectacular scenery and being received by the friendliest people on earth!"

Our guide Lynn was great. She kept us all on time, and happy about it. She kept us informed and made each stop relevant. We had a good group. Food was always delicious, and not at all what we expected. Alan, our bus driver, was awesome. The whole experience was even better than we had imagined it would be. We did hit beautiful weather! Bad news: we caught Covid and had to leave the tour four days early. The hotel we stayed at took exceptional care of us - Clew Bay Hotel in Westport.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Flying the Harris hawk Joyce was amazing. We walked through Ashford Castle Estate to get to the Falconry School, so already we were in a different world. Mel, the falconer, was thorough in explaining how the birds work, and then we each got to call the hawk to us; and after she fed from our gloved hand, we sent her away. It was a surreal moment, in a beautiful movie-like setting, on a sunlit day with a happy group of people, engaging in the same experience. For a moment we were all kids playing."

This was our 6th RS tour and once again the tour exceeded all of our expectations! Everything went smoothly. Our guide, Pascal, was exceptional. He's a great storyteller. We learned a lot about Irish history from him which, I admit, I had always found a bit confusing. The accommodations were very nice, and the group meals were well done. We've always enjoyed the bus rides on previous trips, and this was no exception. One of our favorite things about the RS tours are the local guides!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were so many on this trip, it's hard to choose. I would say the sheep dog demonstration probably tops our list. This was something we almost certainly wouldn't have done if we had been traveling on our own, and yet it proved to be an amazing experience! Next in line would have to be the falconry experience. Seeing a demonstration show is one thing, but actually being able to personally fly the bird was special!"

Our overall tour experience was outstanding. Our tour guide, Paul, is extraordinary. He is very knowledgable about the history, politics, and geography of Ireland as well as being funny and entertaining. We also appreciated the guides, many of whom were historians, that provided a lot of insight into the specific places we visited. We were pleased with the accommodations, particularly Heatons Guest House in Dingle. Visiting Ireland has been a lifelong dream, and we weren't disappointed.

"This is a difficult question because there were so many "wow" moments on the tour. We found the tours of Kilmainham Gaol, Kinsale, and Charles Fort fascinating. We both love history and learned so much on this trip. The sheep shearing, crystal cutting, and falcon demonstrations were great fun. The views of the Cliffs of Moher, and the Giant's Causeway and Dunluce Castle were breathtaking. Even the bus rides were delightful because of the picturesque scenery all along the chosen route."

We waited 3 years to get to go on this tour (thanks to COVID) and it was worth the wait, and worth every penny. This was our first Rick Steves tour, but it certainly won't be our last. The RS organization, the responsiveness of the staff, all helped alleviate any jitters or worries we had before the trip. And the trip itself - wowsa! Granted, it's an overview of the country, but I was so thankful that the guides all went deeply into the history and culture. Thank you!

It was great to be back in Europe after a long "Covid Winter". I've been to Ireland 3 times, 2 with RS Tours, and it's become my home away from home. I renewed friendships with old friends and made new ones. Tour members followed face cover requirements very well. Maybe next season we can safely put members closer together at dinner tables to better develop comradery; most times it was like we were unrelated groups of people at a restaurant.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Since I was last in Ireland 4 years ago, we've had 3 seasons of the Derry Girls TV program. I would ask most locals if they had seen it, and they all had so, we would talk on about our favorite scenes and characters. I got a photo of myself and Charlene, of Martin McCrossan City Tours, a true Derry Girl, in front of the giant mural! There were also 3 fun nights of music and pints at my favorite pub in Dingle, Neligan's."

Weather great - no rain and hotter than I planned for (80's). Loved all the sights we visited. Our tour guide Lolly was amazing - a historian full of so much info. My only complaint was that I would like to know how far and long we are walking at the site. For ex. it was a long walk to the falconry and most of us did not bring water and I should have had my knee brace. I did not realize that Cong sights and the falconry were so close together and would be doing all at same time. Great trip.

The Best of Ireland with our guide, Lolly, could not have been better! Lolly was a master of history, poetry, humor and was able to hold our attention for hours each day!! She was also efficient and reliable to keep our group together, engaged, and always kept us informed of our events by posting notices of our schedule. She was receptive to suggestions and made adjustments as necessary. Her flexibility was very helpful! Lolly is a master guide who gave us the best tour ever!! Lucky us!

"The visit to the falconry was spectacular! We walked along a road in a beautifully manicured garden until we found the falconry. We were met by a bird expert who explained about keeping owls and falcons. We were introduced to a gorgeous owl and then to a beautiful falcon named Joyce! We walked further through the woods to where it was time to let the falcon fly. Each of us had a turn to watch and hold Joyce as she flew toward us and landed on our arm where she was fed raw chicken parts. So Fun!!"

We enjoyed museums, art galleries, boat rides, crystal making, historical and geological sites, Irish dancing and music, strolling parks and gardens, castles and causeways, sipping Irish coffee, admiring native crafts, laughing, savoring new friendships.

Our tour was amazing! Our tour guide Lolly was simply the best! The goal for my wife and I was to see Ireland, but also experience Ireland. The way in which Lolly enveloped us with her historical knowledge, story telling, humor, and music related to the heart of Irish history was nothing short of amazing!! We experienced so much and met so many wonderful people during our trip. I would suggest increasing the length of the tour similarly to the best of Italy so you have more time.

"Tough to answer there were several. The music in Dingle was so much fun. In two nights we were treated to an Irish dance champion and his musician family which turned in to a community Irish folk music pickup at M. Neligans, then the next night was an amazing concert at the church!! The Falconry at Ashford Castle was unforgettable. Hiking through the fields to the Dingle lighthouse on a sunny day! Lolly's perspective on Northern Ireland as a child of Belfast.. OK pretty much the whole thing!!"

The tour is well planned and the attention to detail and execution is outstanding. It offered a good mix of time on our own, as well as planned activities. There were plenty of opportunities to hear local music. The historical narration was excellent and the tour guides starting with Lolly, were outstanding--clearly a cut above what one typically finds when arranging such activities on our own.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It is hard to pick just one. Having a falcon land on your arm has to be near the top of the list. The Dingle peninsula and the Blasket Island center were spectacular. Honorable mentions are Cashel, Kinsale, Dunluce castle, the Giants Causeway, and the Titanic Museum."

Well organized tour. It took all the stress out of planning where to go and what to see. It was wonderful! Literally everything good I've ever heard about Ireland is absolutely true! I'm so glad I went with a Rick Steves' Tour. I think if I had tried to go it on my own, I would have missed so much. Our guide, Joe, was fantastic! He really helped us live the Irish experience through stories, song, history. He (and the rest of the tour members, who were also fantastic) really added something substantive to the trip that would have been missing if I had gone by myself.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"For me, it was the landscape. And it wasn't a single moment, but multiple moments of pure speechless wonder. Every time I thought it couldn't possibly get more beautiful, the bus rounded a corner or crested a hill and the view was more awe inspiring than the last."

I really enjoyed spending time with our group. I could not imagine having a tour guide better than JOE!!! He took care of everything expected and unexpected. Joe was funny and entertaining. His knowledge of everything Irish (history, song, pubs, castles, villages and cities) made the tour so interesting. We loved his songs. Our bus driver Steven was amazing handling the very narrow and terrifying curving roads, he made us feel safe at all times.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The falconry experience, making Irish coffee, sheep shearing, the Joyce book reading, the Dingle peninsula, the walled off neighborhoods in Belfast, the pubs, and the castles. Touring the prison and seeing the Coffin Ship was so moving. We have returned from our tour again thinking this is money well spent. We could undertake all the planning and coordinating for a 2 week intensive travel tour but we find it so nice to have your company's expertise provide all of this. We appreciate a travel style that educates and connects us to the new country - which you provide. Ireland is a very old island, and the many local guides and our tour's guide, helped widen our appreciation of the country's past and present.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We experienced an interaction with a hawk at the 'School of Falconry' at Ashford Castle which was so special. The entire trip, beginning to end, was well planned. It was educational and the sights were stunning. Each place we stayed was unique and the lodging hosts spoiled us! Meals were incredible. Next we stopped in the Doolough Valley of the Connemara Forest to walk - and hop - on a bog (kind of like a water bed!). The National Famine Memorial left me speechless. The tour was amazing! The itinerary was well planned and allowed us to see the very best of what Ireland has to offer. Pascal (our guide) was charming, funny and so eloquent in telling the story of Ireland and helping us appreciate all that we were seeing each day. The only downside was Covid and the concern of coming down with it as 13 of our group sadly did. We loved the places we visited, and the pacing of the tour was perfect for us! Well done!

I was with the tour for 7 days then contacted COVID. My survey responses will reflect that and any diect questions about the actual tour refer to those 7 days. I will also talk about the handling of covid if it fits. Otherwise I will respond to Ruth Ann directly. I had never been to Ireland and felt that this tour gave me a sense of this wonderful country and its complexities. A lot of varied experiences.

"Tough question. More than one. Moved by Kilmainham Gaol especially James Connoly's execution which started the Irish turn against the English rule. This was our first Rick Steves tour, and it was an amazing experience. It far exceeded our expectations! Our guide, Pascal, and bus driver Marc were outstanding; I can't imagine any better to lead us! Would absolutely go again to Ireland!!

"There were so many, it is difficult to choose! I think being in close contact with the local people was a definite favorite of mine. One night in a Pub, we experienced a "Session"; which is local musicians gathering to play and sing together. They made it so personal for us, we felt very included. "Wow" moment was probably when this lovely Irish Lady stood up to sing "Danny Boy". Amazing!"

This is a superbly curated tour. I have 2 friends in the "travel" business who looked over the itinerary, attractions and hotels and they were impressed by your choices. Having read the RS guide and having done my own research ahead of time, I appreciated the excellent use of time at our various attractions/sites, the amount of guided experience and the amount of free time--with no pressure to shop. All of the hotels met my expectations, the group meals were entertaining, fun and delicious.

This 14 day tour of Ireland was above and beyond anything I expected. I think we covered almost all the special places that Ireland has to offer. Our guide Pascal was amazing in every way. Our driver Mark did an outstanding job and very friendly. I would love to return again and enjoy their company. The places we went, the places we stayed, the food we eat, and the local guides were very professional and informative. This trip was worth it.

The organization and especially the local guides were both excellent. Their was exceptional guidance from the tour guide Pascal Fitzpatrick. Not a criticism because I agreed to the parameters around Covid, the symptoms for folks with a full 4 vaccines are no more than a bad cold. The virus is now endemic around the world and should now be treated as common viral infections. Having said that and missing most of the tour due to covid, financial compensation from the tour is much appreciated.

This was our 5th tour; we knew what to expect, and it didn’t disappoint. This particular one, however suffered from matters beyond RS control and how those matters were handled. We didn’t anticipate the impact of the agreement we signed re COVID protocols. Group members bond. To have dinner with someone in the evening and basically “leave them on the roadside” the next morning was demoralizing and created a level of stress and dread that tainted the experience a bit.

I tested positive 5 days into the tour, so was denied the rest of the trip which I hear was outstanding. Pascal was terrific being very helpful in redirecting us. We understood the policy and necessity of the strictness of it; however, with the virus being endemic (a total of14 people tested positive over the course of the trip!) now and the symptoms mild for those with 2 boosters, I think that the policy needs to be updated.

I felt the tour guide, Lolly, was very knowledgeable, extremely conscientious, and thorough. She was always positive, easily reachable, and quick to respond. She blew us away! It was mixed. Very disappointed in our initial guide; she lacked enthusiasm and was not native to Ireland so she was unable to answer some questions which was a surprise. We lost 8 of 28 tour members to Covid in our first week plus our guide. We were angry that there was no backup plan in place when we lost our guide; it was days before we had a new guide other than our bus driver. Dumbfounded at being told that during the Troubles some people died on both sides, not real history.

From the outset we knew we had lucked out by having a great group (no grumps). Lolly was a fun, knowledgeable and experienced guide. We had been to Ireland before but wanted to return on a tour to get the historical and cultural information and enjoy local experiences provided by great guides. The trip was well-paced and gave us enough unstructured time for relaxation and exploration. I probably would have given the tour a 5 if I hadn't got covid so wasn't able to finish the tour.

"After learning a church in Kinsale had fantastic acoustics several of us went back and urged a very modest tour member to sing. His a cappella rendition of two sacred songs and "Danny Boy" left us overwhelmed and in tears. My big "WOW" moment was really an "Oh NO!!!" moment when I felt ill and tested positive on a home covid test on day 5. End of tour for me and my husband, but we were impressed by the help and compassion of our tour guide Lolly and RS's prompt and generous refund policy."

Rick Steves' Tours picked up right where they left off pre COVID. An amazing tour with an exceptional guide (Paul) and fantastic local guides. As in the states some things are still closed or have limited hours due to staffing issues, but that didn't diminish the experience. Ireland is a beautiful, scenic country. Locals are excited to see people again & engage in conversation. Paul added wonderful experiences outside the itinerary with local flavor incorporating food, drink, music & dance.

I am well-traveled, have been on tours with other companies and many overseas trips, but this was my first RST experience and I was, to be honest, skeptical. Our group of 5 friends decided that this tour would cover the most of the country for the best price so we signed up. And, we lucked out! It was a fantastic tour in just about every way. We had a terrific guide and a superb group of fellow travelers, many of whom were repeat RST-ers. There was not a "grump" among us.

A+. Our first Rick Steves Tour became our best trip ever. Ireland's beauty was breathtaking, easily earning the "Emerald Isle" title. Equally memorable was the welcoming warmth of the people and their modern links to the land and their history. My experience was much more than a scenic tour of an interesting island. The artful blending of the story of the land and the story of the people made Ireland unique and wonderful.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I can think of no day on the tour that I didn't have many Wows, but the one that stands out isn't the gorgeous land and sea-scapes or the rich culture per se. It is about a bird. Dara really gave this tour a sense of the REAL Ireland. This was my 4th tour and instead of droning on an on about history on the bus to put me to sleep, he showed me what the Irish are like, and what they fight for and why. So very active! Everyday I learned something new about the history, culture and people of Ireland. This is a very busy tour so be prepared for a lot of movement from one place to the next. Absolutely loved the opportunity to experience so much of the island.

I knew it was going to be a wonderful trip but it far exceeded my expectations. Ireland is a beautiful country and the Irish people are so welcoming, friendly, and witty. The tour was meticulously planned and coordinated. Our guide Dara and our driver Pamela were both exceptional in their roles and fun people to be around. Our group had the nicest people. The local guides and stops in the small villages were fantastic.

"We did so many things in just 14 days, it is difficult to identify a favorite "wow" moment. I think everyday had one for me. But If I had to choose, my favorites were Dingle, Cliffs of Moher, Slea Head Drive, the Burren, and the Giants Causeway as well as all the little villages we stopped in daily."

Our tour guide Susie and driver Steve were superb, giving us a local perspective while caring for our health and safety. I laughed alot! Our group had the nicest people. It was delightful. The local guides and stops were fantastic and the hotels were fabulous! I can't think of a single improvement.

This was our first RS tour; it most definitely exceeded our expectations! Our guide, Susie, was exceptional! She was caring, knowledgeable, and we learned so much about Ireland from her. Our bus driver, Stephen, was the most amazing driver. Both he and Susie are a credit to their professions. All of the lodgings and restaurants were top notch. The local guides like Tommy and Don provided an amazing insight into the area. Our fellow travelers were wonderful. What an amazing trip!

"My favorite "wow" moment was stopping at my grandmother's birthplace, Abbeyfeale, and having my picture taken at the same place where my mother and my son had had their pictures taken on previous tours. This 3 generation momento is priceless. The Dingle Peninsula, Giant's Causeway, and Titanic Museum also qualify as "wow" moments. The entire beauty of Ireland is a "wow'moment!"

To the initial fun meeting with Susie and our group..our buddy system in which we made sure that our little herd was well shepherded by Susie..To meeting Stephen our driver..We visited places and learned SO MUCH from Susie ..I loved the time of year that we went..it was like home.

This was our 2nd RST experience following a 7 day tour in London last year. We really loved the London experience and were hoping that a 2-week trip with lots of days on a bus would be just as good; 14 days in Ireland did not disappoint. Each place we visited had a unique character and story to offer. Our guide was enthusiastic and well-prepared. Just in case there is a person reading this who thinks that a bus ride might be a snooze, it is not! We had so much fun.

I loved my Ireland 14 day tour! Such a beautiful and friendly country. Our tour guide, Susie, and bus driver, Stephen, were especially wonderful as were my fellow travelers. I enjoyed the well planned itinerary and all the local guides/tours/restaurants/pubs/music! Our weather in October was on the cool side as I expected, with a mix of clouds, rain, sun and wind. Nothing that the right layers and rain gear couldn't handle. I was glad I took rain boots with me!

I truly enjoyed the Best of Ireland tour. Each city or town that we visited had charm and a unique history. I appreciated the nuanced and thoughtful historical background that our wonderful guide, Paul, provided as we moved from the Republic to Northern Ireland. We were blessed with some wonderful sunny weather, especially on the Slea Head Drive and even when there was rain, it was worthwhile to see as much as we could of the day's destinations.

"A surprise WOW moment for me was when I got to do the falcon walk. As our group moved forward, I was the one holding the beautiful Harris hawk on my arm. A thrilling experience. I think our stay in Dingle provided several WOW moments: the Slea Head Drive, the Blasket Island Center, and live, lovely music all 3 nights of our stay. Also, the friendly Irish people were helpful and guardian angels more than once as we made our way around new cities."

Paul made the tour great for us. There were 6 of us that went, my wife and I, my parents and my aunt and uncle. For my mother and I hearing the stories/history & seeing the places were what we were most interested in. My wife got sick during the trip and Paul had Allen of coach driver run her over to a clinic while in Dingle so she could get some meds. I really enjoyed talking with Nikky, one of your Seattle IT guys that was the assist on the tour. I am an IT guy as well.

"Walking though Dunluce Castle was incredible. My dad and I did the ridge walk with Paul at the Giant's Causeway, what a view. The walks in the little villages were highlights. Seeing the falcon fly and land on our arm was very cool. I do like southern Ireland more then northern Ireland. Much more old world charm would be a good way to put it I guess."

The tour was excellent. Despite wet/windy days, weather never interfered with our tour. We packed in so much, but never felt rushed. To see so much of Ireland was fantastic.Accommodations were very comfortable, activities enjoyable, and group dinners tasty. But most of all, our guide Paul was beyond outstanding! Paul was truly the best guide I have ever had on a tour! Being from Ireland, Paul provided a special perspective on historical/current events. Our coach drive Allen was excellent.

I felt that I got a very comprehensive tour of primarily coastal areas of Ireland. It was all that I expected. I was a bit concerned about what it would be like for me as I was the only person who didn't know anyone on the trip. When faced with my husband's health decline, I chose to go by myself. My fellow travelers were friendly and accepting of my situation. I also was the only one who didn't drink. There wasn't any pressure to drink.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I really enjoyed going over to Innishmore by ferry and hiking up to the dramatic fortress above the sea. I hadn't expected to enjoy the Titanic exhibit in Belfast but it was actually quite interesting and worth seeing. The weather provided "wow" moments as the rain fell heavily on and off throughout the days. I think the Irish people, at least in the Republic, provide "wow" moments on a regular basis. They are so friendly and helpful!"

The tour itself was amazing! We saw some wonderful sites, heard a lot of the history of Ireland, ate some outstanding food, met some great people, and had a lot of fun. The only negative about this trip was a virus that went through the bus like wildfire, starting very early in the tour. By the end of the tour, most of us had succumbed to it. It is now a little over a week since the tour ended, and we are still sick.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We had been to some of these places before, so we didn't experience the "wow" moments at places such as the Cliffs of Moher or the Giant's Causeway this time as we did on our first visit. These are definitely "wow" places! One of my favorite places was Dingle, where our B&B was right on the bay and we had the most amazing views. We also happened to be in Dingle during a food festival, so got to experience a local festival with good food, music, and lots of people."

Very enjoyable tour! Good choices for towns/sites visited. Appreciated all the breaks while on the bus. Also, took advantage of buying the water from the bus. Loved Ireland as we did the Scotland tour 2 years ago. Our guide - Paul had a wonderful sense of humor and was just an overall great guide. Unfortunately, we got terrible colds about half way through the tour. Only about a hand full of the tour members escaped healthy. We had to skip one of the excursions and spend a 'free day' in bed.

When To Go & Weather

Any time between April and October is a good time to visit Ireland. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for offering fewer crowds, mild weather, and the full range of tourist fun. Summers come with longer days and better (yet still mild) weather, but larger crowds, which mostly effect Dublin.

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly in and out of Dublin (DUB). If you prefer to fly out of Belfast (BFS), select "multicity" on flight-booking websites. The coach from Belfast direct to Dublin Airport takes about two hours and departs hourly 24 hours a day. Your guide can help you book it when you arrive.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Ireland guidebook.
