Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Ireland

Meet your guide and fellow tour members at our hotel at 5 p.m. After a group meeting, we'll enjoy a "Welcome to Ireland" dinner together, followed by an orientation walk through the heart of Dublin.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Dublin.

Day 2: The Historic Heart of Dublin

This morning we'll take a walking tour through Dublin, including a stop at Trinity College for an illuminating look at the remarkable Book of Kells, a creative jolt that helped pull Europe out of the Dark Ages. We'll continue on, learning about the city's rich history, from the days of Viking raids to the hard centuries of British occupation to the proud and progressive city of today. You'll have the rest of the day free to feel the pulse of a city thriving with street poets and musicians.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Dublin.

Day 3: Kilmainham Gaol and Monumental Ruins

On our way out of Dublin, we'll stop at Kilmainham Gaol and learn about its place in Ireland's stirring struggle for independence a little more than a century ago. Then we'll continue to the green Plain of Tipperary, and the Rock of Cashel. We'll tour Cashel's evocative ruins and the cluster of medieval buildings that became a major ecclesiastical center of Ireland. Our day will end with dinner together in the picturesque harbor town of Kinsale.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Kinsale.

Day 4: Kinsale and Charles Fort

This morning we'll be treated to a walking tour that brings Kinsale's past to life, places its story in the wider sweep of history, and makes the stony sights much more than buildings. Inspired by all we've learned, we'll continue on to explore the massive and revolutionary (for its time) Charles Fort, which overlooks the harbor. You'll have the afternoon and evening free to make your own discoveries in Kinsale, known as Ireland's gourmet capital.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: ½ hour. Sleep in Kinsale.

Day 5: Killarney National Park and Dingle

Today we'll take a scenic drive along the forests (Ireland's largest), mountains, and lakes of Killarney National Park. Then we'll balance-off this peacefulness with a visit to a local sheep farm, marveling at its talented dogs in action. We'll end our day in Dingle, where we'll enjoy dinner together in one of the country's best traditional music scenes.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Dingle (group may be split between two B&Bs).

Day 6: Gaelic Heritage

It's a great day to experience some of Europe's wildest natural beauty and most ancient Christian sights. We'll start our day with a crystal cutting demonstration from a master craftsman, then hop aboard our bus with a local expert to follow the famous Slea Head Drive, our vote for the most beautiful road in Ireland. We'll stop to tour the strikingly designed Great Blasket Centre, where we'll get an intimate look at the language, literature, and daily life of a traditional Gaelic Blasket community. Tonight, we'll return to Dingle for as much dancing and singing with new friends as we can handle.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Dingle.

Day 7: Roam the Dingle Peninsula

Today is all yours…free on the Dingle Peninsula. Take a long walk along the local paths and lanes, rent a bicycle and pedal the scenic 30-mile Dingle Loop, sail for the day to the rugged Blasket Islands, or simply savor your generous Irish breakfast and hang out in town.

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No bus. Sleep in Dingle.

Day 8: Cliffs of Moher and the Burren

This morning we'll drive through County Clare to the dramatic Cliffs of Moher, where you'll find yourself leaning into the wind and teetering on the very edge of Europe more than 600 feet above the churning waters of the North Atlantic. Farther up the road, we'll explore the rocky moonscape of the Burren to learn about its unique ecosystem and hardy prehistoric residents. Tonight we'll share dinner together in Galway.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Galway.

Day 9: Galway and the Aran Islands

This morning we'll hop aboard a ferry bound for the stark beauty of Inishmore, the largest of the Aran Islands. There you can join your guide for a minibus tour 'round this dramatic island, including the site of its ancient, cliff-hanging Celtic fortress, Dun Aengus. Or, you'll have plenty of time to set out on foot, hire a pony cart, or pedal a bike to explore this windswept island on your own.

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). Boat: 2 hours. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Galway.

Day 10: Connemara Countryside

Today we'll drive through the Connemara region, enjoying the beautiful Irish countryside. We'll stop in the charming town of Cong (where Maureen O'Hara and John Wayne filmed The Quiet Man in 1951), stroll through the picturesque abbey ruins, and visit the School of Falconry at Ashford Castle. Then we'll drive north to County Mayo and Westport, where we'll settle in for the evening.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Westport.

Day 11: To Northern Ireland

We'll seamlessly cross into Northern Ireland today. In Derry, a local guide will take us on a tour of the town, sharing stories about "the Troubles" and the infamous "Bloody Sunday" of 1972. Then we'll drive on to the nostalgic seaside resort of Portrush, with time for an evening stroll along the strand and dinner.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Portrush.

Day 12: Antrim Coast

Today we'll explore Northern Ireland's spectacular Antrim Coast, marveling at the bizarre basalt columns and local legends of the Giant's Causeway. Then stop for a look at the romantic ruins of Dunluce Castle, perched precariously on a clifftop overlooking the North Atlantic before testing your nerve teetering across the scenic Carrick-a-Rede rope footbridge (optional, wind permitting). Watch your step while enjoying the fine views and the great seabirds soaring. Then we're off to the capital of the North, Belfast.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Belfast.

Day 13: Belfast and the Titanic

This morning we'll begin our day at the Titanic Belfast visitor experience, located on the very site where the great ship was built. Next, a local guide will board our coach for a rolling tour that takes us through historic Belfast and along reminders of the past decades' Troubles, including the striking political murals of Shankill and Falls Road. The rest of the afternoon is yours to explore more of Belfast. Tonight we'll kick up our heels at a tasty farewell supper together, where we'll share travel memories and toast new friends. Sláinte!

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Belfast.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. You can fly out of Belfast or Dublin's handy airports. For those not ready to return home yet, both cities are a great jumping off point to Paris, London, Amsterdam, and many other exciting destinations. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Slán leat!

The tour was outstanding with visits to many wonderful sites. We learned a great deal about Ireland and our guide, Joe, was fantastic!

It was just a great group of people and our Tour Guide Joe had us all in such a thoughtful mood that we seemed to go from one good experience to another.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Maybe the moment I put out my arm with the falconer's glove on it and the beautiful hawk flew from a tree to my arm. Or maybe it was sitting at the precipice of the ring fort on Aran, or finally making it back across the Carick-a-rede rope bridge."

The people we were traveling with were all wonderful. Lots and lots of great conversations over breakfast, over lunches, over dinner, on the bus…..There were 28 of us, enough to keep it interesting. And, no one was late, ever! We always left on time. The people made it a great tour. I loved the food offered during the group meals! I felt the venues worked extraordinarily hard to make delicious, well presented meals, like 4 star restaurants. Big spreads for breakfast every morning. All good!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Ireland is a beautiful island! But I was really enchanted by Ashford Castle, and the School of Falconry. The castle is amazing, so big. The grounds are extensive, and well maintained. The old growth trees in the forest are something to see. It was so peaceful there. And being able to catch and hold a falcon was a memorable moment, then to watch it take off from my hand…so beautiful. That was my “wow” moment!"

We did 3 tours back to back - unfortunately the other two emails have expired as I waited until we got home - but in 7 weeks we did not have one bad day. Turkey was amazing, more than I imagined, Tylan was a super guide -lots of history information and fun - Greece was my bucket list. Athens was nice and loved the way up to the Parthenon but was glad to get out of the city. Heatwave hit when we were there up to 105F - Dafni was a gem, then on to Ireland where Pascal made everyone welcome

This was my first RSE tour and everything exceeded my expectations. Every recommended pub or site or event that we took advantage of was spot on fabulous. Many of our own explorations likewise ended up being great spots that our guide confirmed had been excellent choices on our parts. The locations for the tour covered all the highlights of Ireland and our guide added just the right amount of context and stories to add to the memorable and meaningful experiences.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"As a descendant of Irish immigrants who left during The Great Hunger, the trip through the Doo Lough Valley with the brief stop at the memorial to those who perished in their 12-mile walk to seek food assistance was touching and heart-wrenching. Pascal retold their story in a respectful and meaningful way. Additionally, the way NI has progressed following the GFA and The Troubles gives me hope that all humans may some day be able to move beyond such turbulent times. "

First time in Ireland. The people are conspicuously friendly and the natural wonders are second only to ours. The hotels on this tour were much nicer than the Best of Italy. The food was surprisingly good. I read the Rick Steves book and thought I was prepared, but the history lessons on the tour were unforgettable. They were exactly what I needed, when I needed it. The tour guide and tour guide were a fantastic team. Enjoyed Italy, but I love Ireland and plan to return with the RS book.

It was excellent! Our tour guide Pascal is such a personable man with great stories, a rich Irish history and a quick wit and sense of humor that he made everyone feel quite relaxed and comfortable and therefore made the group dynamics very fun. Even though I arrived a day early I wish I had more time in Dublin to really enjoy the museums and other attractions. I personally didn't care for Galway (dirty and not much of an Irish feel). Group meals were great except for Hotel Europa.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Walking alone in the cold early morning mist to the Dingle Lighthouse I met an elderly gentleman collecting Kerry stones along the shore. I said good morning and he asked if I had come out for a swim. I laughed and said no, just a walk. We ended up talking about many things over the next 20 minutes, about his family and Ireland's history, how his great grandfather died in Andersonville prison and the state of world affairs. He was a very kind man I felt then that I made a real Irish connection."

This was my first organized tour of any kind; I prefer traveling on my own. I thought we saw a good variety of sites and cities around the country. Hotels were very centralized. I didn't like the limited options of the group dinners. I thought the schedule seemed a bit rushed in certain areas, specifically the more nature-oriented areas. The bus was comfortable and spacious and the tour guide was great.

As a younger person I was nervous about a group tour since we tend to be a lot more independent in our traveling. Overall, I loved learning about the history of Ireland and Northern Ireland and love that every site (minus a few extras) helped us understand everything a little better. There were a few places I wish we had more time to explore, but I understand that the logistics of getting a large group to a new place in time is important. Great experience!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The natural sites were the most memorable for me, personally. Getting out of the city to explore more than the hustle and bustle was a highlight for me. The Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula and the Antrim Coast were all beautiful and helped break us up from a lot of the walking tours and towns/cities. "

What an amazing tour! Pascal, our wonderful guide, and Pamela, our talented driver were the perfect team for making our time in Ireland such a success. Add to that the special local guides who provided the depth of knowledge and unfailing humor during our time with them. Special mention is noted for local guides Dara (in Dublin), Barry(in ‘Kinsale), and Susie (in Belfast). Loved the hotels for their convenient locations and group meals which gave us that local touch. Perfect from start to finish

Favorite "WOW" moment

"This is always tough to narrow down. We saw two Vermeer paintings at Dublin’s National Gallery and then two Caravaggio paintings at the Ulster Museum in Belfast. Both were special exhibits that we were lucky enough to catch. But time and again, it was the Irish landscapes that would overawe me with their amazing beauty and timelessness. I’ll take those memories with me for a long time. "

The people in the tour group we were with were fun and great conversationalists, every meal together was a social event. It was a great time.

What an amazing RSE tour! (This was our 10th!) From Pascal’s wonderful stories, to Pamela’s excellent driving skill, our friendly, cohesive tour group, the proud, brave sheep dogs, the memorable falconry experience, the scrumptious food at Out of the Blue in Dingle, Coco in Belfast, and Mr Deans in Belfast, to the fabulous museums and gardens, and Susie’s poignant Titanic story. This tour far surpassed my expectations!

Favorite "WOW" moment

And we were also totally blown away with the friendliness of the Irish people, the beauty of their country, and their amazing restaurants. Best vacation I've ever taken! I toured a star fort at Kinsale, saw bog bodies and Viking artifacts at the National Museum of Archeology in Dublin, and many old cemeteries with Celtic crosses. We saw old stone homes where fishermen and farmers lived on the Aran Islands. Got to listen to a lot of traditional Irish music and saw some Irish dancing. Spent some evenings in the pubs and talked with the locals over a Guinness or two. We also saw a lot of the countryside. I could go on & on.

Our guide, Lynn, was fabulous as were the local guides. This was my 5th RS tour yet I was unprepared for just how much bus time there would be. So much “on and off the bus.” Too much time in Dingle and not nearly enough at the Cliffs of Moher. While the cities we stayed in made sense in order to accomplish an overview, I did not enjoy Portrush. Loved Northern Ireland-both the scenery and history. The worst souvenir was Covid. The entire tour was a great adventure. The places we visited, the sites we saw, the people we encountered, and many of the dining experiences were simply unforgettable. Key to all of this was an outstanding guide. Joe was extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of Irish life, history, and culture. He made very creative use of audio and other resources on the bus to prepare us for what were going to see and do. The local guides were also exemplary.

The tour was nothing short of fantastic. I had never been on a Rick Steves tour or any group tour and did not really know what to expect. Seeing Ireland with Rick Steves was the absolutely best decision. I did so much and learned so much that I could never have accomplished on my own. Plus it was fun to travel with people who also wanted to get to know Ireland. I was having such a great time that in the evenings I found myself reviewing Rick Steves offerings for 2025, planning my next trip!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It's impossible to name just one. I'll mention Kinsale because it was early in our trip and was a charming, beautiful seaside village. I very much enjoyed learning about the connection to the the sinking of the Lusitania, seeing the graves and the building where the inquiry was held. For history junkies--ancient and recent--the Rick Steves 14-day tour of Ireland is one long learning high."

Our tour guide Pascal and Driver Mark, made our tour of Ireland throughly enjoyable. We heard somber stories of the hardships faced by the Irish; notably the famine and the troubles, but also enjoyed the hospitality of the locals, the stunning beauty of the land, great food, Trad music in many of the pubs and the happiest cows and sheep you will ever see.

This tour was one of the best RS tours I have taken. Guide Pascal clearly loves his job and was always there to answer questions and provide the history of Ireland. Mark, our driver, got us to each location ahead of the crowds and was the perfect sidekick to Pascal. I was amazed by the history and suffering of the Irish people. Learning about the famine and how Irish people had to emigrate to survive was eye opening. The scenery is breathtaking and the pubs and Irish music added to the allure.

My wife and I had a great time on the trip. Our guide, Lolly, made everyone feel like part of her family. She was very knowledgeable and personable. All the local guides kept the tours interesting and enlightening. The bus driver, Paul, was friendly and drove the bus masterfully on the narrow Irish roads. All of the other tourists were friendly and courteous. The only negative I could come up with was the Dublin Hotel, Hampton by Hilton was not the usual Rick Steves hotel.

We had an awesome guide, Deklan, who interacted very well with our group and provided great information on our sites. He went above and beyond to explain what we were seeing. Our biggest concern was that on the first day a traveler in our group came down with COVID. His wife had been sick the week before our trip. The illness traveled through the bus and caused loss of time on the days of the trip. This was very disappointing, since we paid dearly for the opportunity to see Ireland.

Conor’s connections to musicians made for intimate experiences that were easier to feel comfortable in than trying to appreciate Irish jamming in noisy bars where you couldn’t hear the music over the din of the crowd’s conversations."

Our tour experience was fantastic. We knew we would like Ireland but were not prepared to LOVE it as much as we did. The culture, history, beauty, people, MUSIC, all blended together to create a perfect trip. Add to that our amazing guide Cathie. She was warm, compassionate, organized, and knew everything about Ireland. Her own amazing singing plus her connection to the music world of Ireland made this trip unique and unforgettable. Our tour group was terrific, compatible and fun!.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It's hard to identify one wow moment. I think the overall blend of culture (including music) and beauty made most days full of "wow" moments. But if I had to choose, it would be exploring the Giant's Causeway and Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge both on the Antrim Coast. Although I didn't walk the bridge, the beauty and "feel" of these areas were worthy of many wows. Additionally, in Dingle, Cathie arranged a private concert for us with two wonderful local musicians - a very special WOW! "

The tour was outstanding throughout. Although my wife and I are no strangers to international travel, we had not previously done a fully organized tour -- the closest having been the My Way Alpine Europe in 2018 which we loved. The Ireland tour surpassed expectations on every front. From the outset I felt immersed in Irish culture and beauty. The food, music, and hospitality were exceptional, as was the comradery of our group under the leadership of our caring guide, Cathie, and driver Mark.

Favorite "WOW" moment

I would have to say that this was one of the best travel experiences I have had. Our tour guide Cathie was well versed in the history, culture, folklore, and music of Ireland and wove it all together seamlessly from start to finish. This was the first tour of any kind for me. I liked having destinations well thought out. Having a tour guide that can give you history of the area you're traveling through, but not make it a "history" lesson was nice. This tour provided so much delight - the gorgeous scenery, the fascinating and complicated history, the knowledgeable local guides, the great music, and a top-notch tour director. Absolutely a wonderful two weeks!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were so many! It's hard to choose. The falconry experience was a high point. Having our director sing to us in Gaelic on the coach, in Dublin, in a 1200-year-old oratory was unexpected and magical. Watching sheep dogs at work, both at the designated tour site and later, just on a hillside were moments to remember. "

A very pleasant journey through a very pretty country with a complicated history. Our tour director (Cathie) was tremendous. Almost always upbeat and very informative, her knowledge (and singing) contributed a lot to the overall experience.

"Don't know that I had one. Lots of spectacular scenery, the coast around Dingle, the Cliffs of Moher, the Giant's Causeway were all spectacular. Belfast was interesting and I wish we had scheduled our trip to spend an extra day there. I'm a political junky so I would have liked to know more about the history of the "troubles" even including an explanation of using a euphemism like "the troubles" to cover up an ongoing Civil War. This was our first RSE tour and we were very pleased. Our guides (Lynn and apprentice Conor) were very knowledgeable, friendly, accessible, and kept the group engaged. We learned a great deal from them about Irish history and culture. Lynn was a big hit with her treats on the bus. She kept us on target with her "time expectations" and buddy check system. My wife and I were pleased with the selection of every hotel. The local guides were quite engaging and knowledgeable.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Hard to pick one, but the Cliffs of Moher, Castle Dun Aengus on Inishmore, and the sights along the Atrim coast would be at the top. Another impressive memory would be when we accidently bumped into our local Kinsale guide Barry about two hours after he had finished his guided tour with our group and then proceeded to spend time with just my wife and I showing us more of the town. It was at if we had been friends for years!"

We were very lucky to have a great guide with Lolly, a great bus driver with Mark and a really nice group of people. We lucked out with the weather too. Lolly was able to take 28 people and entertain us all. Lolly mentioned that we had several "firsts" and all of them were well worth it. Outstanding tour and guide. Pascal was tremendous and extremely knowledgeable about the towns, history and places to visit during our tour. The man deserves a raise in pay for this one. He earned it. He was always available to help with any issue. Advise for folks touring Ireland: do not come with "water resistant" jackets. Get Water proof. There is a huge difference and those who did got soaked. Our Rick Steves Best of Ireland tour was absolutely amazing! Pascal, our guide, Steve, our bus driver, and all the guides in each city were fabulous, funny, and so knowledgeable. "Gaining an understanding of the history and challenges that shaped the country and its people. The Cliffs of Moher, Slea Head Drive, Dingle Peninsula, and the Burren were all spectacular sights...so much so that you almost became immune to the beauty of the landscapes, but the resilience, warmth and friendliness of the people, who have faced so many challenges were more inspiring. This tour offered a fascinating crash course in Irish history, politics, religion, architecture, poetry, song and culture. Since I neglected to do any "summer reading" before the tour, I've already purchased two books to delve further into issues that I didn't realize I knew so little about before this tour. The hotels were all fine. Belfast's Europa Hotel was a perfect end point with the bus stations right next door, sparing us long walks in the teeming rain the morning of departure.

"Cliffs of Moher- a gorgeous walk and breathtaking scenery. Strong Second: When a local made a song request for "grace" at a bar in Kinsale and after he exuberantly joined in singing it, I realized it was a song about Grace Gifford, who we had just learned about on our tour of Kilmainham Gaol. Third: the landscape of western Ireland. "

It was a great and memorable experience because of a very knowledgeable Tour Director, Joe, and very likable tour members. Our Tour Director gave us a lot of Historical, Cultural facts about Ireland. During our walks Joe surprised us by giving the names of plants, trees, flowers that we saw along the way. The sights, sea shore, the castle, the architectures of the places we visited were just astonishing and truly memorable. It was an impressive tour!

"The wows kept coming. I guess the most I was impressed with was the American-Irish connections everywhere we went and the friendliness of the Irish people. Being American with Irish ancestry, I learned so much and finally what it meant to be “Scots Irish”. The whole tour had wonderful and delightful details evey day. "

This was my first Rick Steve’s tour. I’ve traveled using Rick’s book for years and watched his travel programs, so figured I’d be happy.Actually being on one of his tours was amazing! There is no way, on our own that my husband and I would have seen all the sights we did or learn all the history of an area that we did. The personal stories shared by the guides, the daily diversions from the schedule, made every day an unforgettable adventure. We can’t wait to plan another trip with Rick Steve’s.

"The landscapes of Ireland constantly took my breath away. The comradaree that developed among the group of total strangers was a surprise. On our group was passing into Northern Ireland, our trip guide, Joe, had our driver divert to a beautiful spot where we all disembarked to toast a goodbye and thank you to a most beautiful country and experience. Of course it was rainy but the weather just fit the occasion and how we all felt in leaving."

Ireland lived up to its reputation as the Emerald Isle. Such glorious, untamed beauty everywhere outside the metropolitan areas, it was a feast for the eyes and soul.

Ireland was beautiful and the people were so friendly. Our guide Kelli was fantastic - knowledgeable, personable and interesting. Our bus driver Pamela was not only a good driver but was a great source of information about culture and life in Ireland. We had a good group and everything was handled like clockwork.

When To Go & Weather

Any time between April and October is a good time to visit Ireland. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for offering fewer crowds, mild weather, and the full range of tourist fun. Summers come with longer days and better (yet still mild) weather, but larger crowds, which mostly affect Dublin.

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly in and out of Dublin (DUB). If you prefer to fly out of Belfast (BFS), select "multicity" on flight-booking websites. The coach from Belfast direct to Dublin Airport takes about two hours and departs hourly 24 hours a day. Your guide can help you book it when you arrive.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Ireland guidebook.
