Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to Ireland
We'll gather together at our hotel at 2 p.m. for a meeting and orientation. Then we'll take a short drive to the dramatic Cliffs of Moher, where you'll find yourself leaning into the wind, teetering on the very edge of Europe more than 600 feet above the churning waters of the North Atlantic. Afterward we'll get to know one another over a hearty "Welcome to Ireland" dinner together.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Ennis.
Day 2: Ennis to Dingle Town
After breakfast, we'll pack up and board our comfy bus, setting course for Ireland's Dingle Peninsula. En route we'll stop to visit County Limerick's lovely village of Adare, brimming with thatched cottages and flower gardens. At the end of our drive we'll arrive in the pastel-painted, quintessentially Irish harbor town of Dingle. After a walking tour, we'll enjoy a gourmet dinner of local specialties followed by an evening of Gaelic tunes.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Dingle.
Day 3: The Dingle Peninsula
It's a great day to experience some of Europe's wildest natural beauty and most ancient Christian sites. We'll start our day with a crystal cutting demonstration from a master craftsman, then hop aboard our bus with our local expert to follow the famous Slea Head Drive, our vote for the most beautiful road in Ireland. We'll stop to tour the strikingly situated Great Blasket Centre, where we'll get a close-up look at the language, literature, and daily life of a traditional Gaelic Blasket community. After lunch, we'll visit the Dingle Falconry Experience for an intimate introduction to their majestic birds of prey. The remainder of the day is free for you to soak in more of Dingle's charms and enjoy dinner on your own.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Dingle.
Day 4: The Rock of Cashel and Kilkenny
Today we'll bid goodbye to Dingle as our bus transports us across the Emerald Isle to Kilkenny. On our way, we'll stop to tour one of Ireland's most historic and evocative sights: the Rock of Cashel. St. Patrick himself was here more than 1,500 years ago, and ever since, the Rock has been the spiritual heart of Ireland. From the craggy remains of the cathedral and castle to the views stretching out across the Plain of Tipperary, this is where the Irish in you will stir from head to toe. Upon arrival in Kilkenny, we'll take an orientation walk through the medieval town center and visit Kilkenny Castle, a symbol of Norman occupation since the 12th century. After a walk through its restored Victorian interiors and extensive parklands, your evening is free for dinner and traditional music in one of the many atmospheric pubs.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Kilkenny.
Day 5: Glendalough and Gardens
This morning we'll head back in time with a visit to Glendalough, Ireland's most impressive monastic settlement. We'll visit the iconic Round Tower, ruined churches, and the lakes that give Glendalough its name. Then we're off to visit Ireland's best aristocratic gardens at the Powerscourt Estate. We'll end the day in Dublin with an orientation and dinner together.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Dublin.
Day 6: The Heart of Dublin
This morning we'll take a walking tour through Dublin including a stop at Trinity College for an illuminating look at the remarkable Book of Kells, a creative jolt that helped pull Europe out of the Dark Ages. We'll continue on, learning about the city's often-calamitous history, from the days of Viking raids to the hard centuries of British occupation to its remarkable literary legacy to the modern city of today. The rest of your day will be free to take in some of Dublin's other world-class sights, such as the National Museum of Archaeology or Dublin Castle.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Dublin.
Day 7: Irish History and Culture
This morning we'll tour Glasnevin Cemetery and Museum, the final resting place of more than one million Dubliners, including many of Ireland's national heroes and heroines. Afterward, you'll be free to explore more of Dublin's sites, including Kilmainham Gaol, Epic: The Irish Emigration Museum, or the Guinness Storehouse. Tonight we'll compare notes and celebrate our marvelous week together over a farewell dinner.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Dublin.
Day 8: Tour Over After Breakfast
Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. You can fly out of Dublin's handy airport, or, for those not ready to return home yet, Dublin is a great jumping off point to Paris, London, Amsterdam, and many other exciting destinations. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Slán leat!

We had a great trip. Ireland is beautiful. Accommodations selected by the tour were very good. Our tour guide was excellent. The bus was clean and very comfortable, and the driver was amazing on some of the narrow roads that we were on. There was a good mix of scheduled activities versus free time. My wife and I enjoyed the more rural areas of Ireland, such as the Dingle peninsula, as well as places like the Rock of Cashel, although Dublin certainly is well worth the visit.

You'll have the luck of the Irish if you get Gearoid as your guide! This young, easygoing, native Dingle man has a wealthy knowledge of Irish history and he shared wonderful traditional Irish culture with us. We got to hear writer Billy Keane tell us stories about growing up in his parents pub in Listowel; watched the phenomenal footwork of Irish Trad. dancer David Geaney and listened to the mesmerizing voice and music of Niamh Varian-Barry. I enjoyed the great hotels and excellent dinners.

"My #1 Wow Moment was the Kingdom Falconry Experience on the waterfront at our hotel in Dingle. To have a Harris Hawk and a Barn Owl fly to my gloved hand and then to hold a magnificent Eagle Owl (one of the largest living species of owl) was an amazing experience and a memory that will stay with me forever! Runner up moment was when Gearoid arranged to be our guide on a boat tour of Dingle Bay. We had great views of the high cliffs and rare, up close sightings of Blasket Sharks!"

To be honest I was a little nervous at first about waking up early each day, all of the bus time, and feeling almost like herding cattle. I was SOOO pleasantly surprised and blown away by the tour. Each day and activity/event felt equally special and important. When asked what my favorite part of the trip was I could not pick just one. I did not want the trip to end. Will definitely be taking another Rick Steve's tour in the future.

Pascal was an excellent tour guide! He made efforts to connect group members right away. He posted our group itinerary every day and answered all of our questions. Pascal shared important history and background information about the Irish people, which provided good context for our learning. He offered us fun enrichment activities, such as listening to his friend, Billy, tell stories, participating in falconry, and touring his friend’s Dingle Crystal business.

The tour was excellent. We saw much more than we would have on our own, and the information from Pascal and the other guides really made the sights much more meaningful. Our group was fun and easy going and the entire trip was a very relaxing experience. Going on a tour tends to "save us from ourselves". The hotels and restaurants I would have chosen would not have been nearly as nice as the ones we visited. Pascal's love of Ireland was contagious.

We have used RS books to travel since 2006, and finally decided to take an actual RS tour this year, after almost four years of not traveling due to the pandemic. We could not have been more pleased, and our tour guide played a large role in making this experience extra special.
Favorite "WOW" moment
"Our number one wow moment would have to be the time spent with our tour guide, Pascal. He was so knowledgeable, not only of the areas we were visiting, but of the history of Ireland, and how it impacts present day life in that country. As history buffs who love to get to know the country we are visiting, Pascal did an excellent job in making that happen. As far as a wow place, I would have to say Dingle: Milltown House was superb, and the tour of the Great Blasket Centre was very enlightening."

Our guide, Stephen, was great and our group was engaging and fun. Last, but not least, I want to mention our bus driver George. His driving skill and professionalism made our travel across Ireland relaxing and enjoyable. It was a complete package.

"There were so many "wow" moments it is hard to pick just one, but I would say our time in Dingle was very impressive. It started with the drive from Ennis along the Dingle Penninsula. The scenery was spectacular and the stories along the way prepared us for the environment we were about to enter in Dingle."

We cannot stop talking about this tour and about Ireland. Taking a "deep dive" into the country's history and culture via this bus tour, plus 4 days before the tour on our own (when Biden was visiting) gave us a real appreciation for Ireland and its people. We went for reasons of ancestry and came away cheering for these people and wanting more.

"Seeing the Cliffs of Moher on a clear afternoon was definitely a "wow". The musicians who came to play for us at Milltown House in Dingle were another "wow" because they played some incredible original songs along with the traditional and their skill as musicians was fantastic. The tour of Ireland was amazing mostly because of our tour guide, Kellie. Kellie is a trained archeologist which really added to her understanding of many of the locations we visited. Her choices of restaurants was amazing and she was great at communicating what to expect each day.

The couple was so talented that we later went into town to a pub to listen to them again. While in Dingle we enjoyed a walking tour with a local and went to a crystal carving demonstration."

Our tour guide, Garoad, did a fantastic job and made the overall experience very enjoyable. Since he is from Dingle, he was able to set up some entertainment that I don’t expect other guides might have been able too. Those two days in Dingle were the highlight of my trip. The bus driver George was also a very good driver, very professional, and very personable. A very good team Garoad and George are, making the entire trip a memorable and positive experience!

"In Dingle Garoad set up 5 time world champion Irish Dancer, David Geaney, to come dance for us, followed by a lovely show by a local singer and guitar player. For me, it didn’t get any better, than seeing these two beautiful representations of Irish entertainment, truly memorable."

This trip was a nonstop opportunity to connect with the Irish people, from a guy who kept us entertained with conversation during a music session in Ennis, to an elderly couple we sat next to in Bewley's Oriental Cafe in Dublin, to a young mom and her son at a Sunday "Ukulele Hooley." Our guide Gearoid, took great care of us, and I appreciated his humor and knowledge of Irish history, culture and Gaelic sports. I think George is the best bus driver on the planet!

"Gearoid arranged for tea and scones with Billy Keane at John B. Keane's Pub in Listowel, which was a hoot. Falconry, Irish dancing by David Geaney and a concert at Milltown House, not forgetting the gentle giant Irish wolfhounds. The drive around Slea Head and Glendalough for exquisite scenery."

One thing is for sure...what Rick Steves Tours say you will experience, you will experience! They simply are not like other tour operators. You will go places and experience the culture in a way that other tours can’t provide. For example, our guide was a native of Ireland and studied history in college as well. GREAT combination for a tour guide! Finally, they spend a tremendous amount of effort making sure you’re fully prepared for your trip. This is so valuable for less experienced travelers.

Our Rick Steves tour guide Pascal, was amazing. So knowledgeable, knew everyone everywhere we went, and was always happy to help in any way. There was an excellent mix of planned time and free time. All of the tours and destinations were amazing. Hotels were top notch with the exception of Dublin where I had a few complaints, but it was probably due to staff shortages. Overall outstanding experience.

I highly recommend our tour guide Pascal. I was happy to see mostly railing to hold on to when climbing so I felt safe. The hotels were excellent and the breakfast and dinners meals were wonderful. I liked the free time we were given each day to do our own thing. I felt good that I was able to keep up with the group in walking and hiking. I enjoyed sharing with all the tour group. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed Ireland in 8 Days tour. It was a great mix of rural western Ireland and the big city feel of Dublin in the east. The people of Ireland were just great and made us feel at home. Our tour guide was very entertaining, and we came away with a better understanding of Ireland's history and current affairs.

"Our favorite "wow" moment was when we used our free time to go on the Dingle Sea Safari. The boat ride took us out of Dingle Harbor, past the southern portion of the Dingle Peninsula to the Blasket Islands. During the safari we saw the beautiful scenery of the Peninsula and the Islands from a sea level vantage point. The cliffs were quite spectacular. We were amazed at the marine wildlife we encountered. We came across hundreds of dolphins, scores or seals and puffins and a minke whale."

"Although I loved each area we visited, probably my favorite stay was at our Bed and Breakfast in Dingle. We had live entertainment at our group dinner there - a local Irish family who played lively tunes on their accordions and flute. Their adult son had been on tour with River Dance before Covid - he "wowed" us by dancing high-stepping jigs and reels. The following day we had a Falconry experience on the grounds of our B&B - so cool to have falcons and owls flying to our outstretched arms!"

When To Go & Weather
Any time between April and October is a good time to visit Ireland. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for offering fewer crowds, mild weather, and the full range of tourist fun. Summers come with longer days and better (yet still mild) weather, but larger crowds, which mostly affect Dublin.

Hotels & Flights
Tour Hotels
In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying in the Documents section of your tour account.
Flights
Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.
Most tour members arrange to fly into Shannon (SNN) and out of Dublin (DUB) — "multicity" on flight booking websites. Ennis, where our tour starts, is an easy half-hour bus ride from Shannon Airport.
Note: If you plan to spend a few days in the UK as part of your itinerary, you'll find a better selection of post-tour Dublin–London flights to choose from than pre-tour London–Shannon flights.
We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Ireland guidebook.
