Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Sicily

We'll gather at our hotel in Palermo at 3 p.m. for a welcome meeting. Then we'll begin our Sicilian adventure by joining a contessa for a personal tour of her family's home, the Palazzo Federico. We'll end our evening getting to know one another at a "Welcome to Sicily" dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Palermo.

Day 2: Palermo and Monreale

We'll meet our local guide and take a walking tour of Palermo and its colorful, bustling Ballaró street market — all spiced with an evocative whiff of Africa. Then we'll greet our driver and hop aboard our coach bound for the hill-topping town of Monreale — renowned for its Arab-flavored cathedral that blends Byzantine, Arab, Jewish, Gothic, and Norman traditions, heritage, and art. We'll tour the cathedral's interior of glittering, golden mosaics as well as the story-telling columns of the cloister. After lunch, we'll return to Palermo, where you'll be free to explore more of this exciting, energetic city and discover a tucked-away trattoria for dinner on your own.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 1 hour. Sleep in Palermo.

Day 3: Ancient Segesta and Mountaintop Erice

This morning we'll head toward the island's western coast, stopping at the ancient Greek site of Segesta to meander through its magnificent Doric temple and hilltop theater. Then we'll continue to the enchanting medieval mountaintop town of Erice. Believed by Romans to be the home of Venus, Erice eventually evolved into a center for Christian convents and home to heavenly pastries (which we'll learn about and taste). This afternoon we'll enjoy a tasty lunch that includes the region's specialties — sun-dried tomatoes, Castelvetrano olives, and Marsala wine — before making our way to today's final destination: seaside Trapani, where we'll take an orientation walk and set you free for the evening.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Trapani.

Day 4: Salt Harvesting and Seaside Trapani

Today we'll drive down to the Trapani salt pans — a coastal wetland and nature reserve where sea salt has been harvested for nearly 3,000 years. We'll tour the Phoenician island of Mozia and learn about this bygone civilization. Then our guide will teach us the history and process of salt harvesting as we tour the area by boat. You'll be free to spend the rest of your day exploring the seaside town of Trapani. Find that perfect terrace, savor your favorite aperitivo, and watch the sun slowly dip into the sea.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Boat: 1 hour. Sleep in Trapani.

Day 5: Ancient Agrigento and Country Living

This morning we'll take a magical history tour through the ruins of Agrigento, one of the richest of the Greek colonies and a thriving democracy 2,500 years ago. We'll focus on Agrigento's Valley of the Temples — the largest, best-preserved collection of ancient Greek buildings outside of Greece itself — and tour its archeological museum. This afternoon we'll head to our tranquil countryside hotel. You'll have time to soak in the view before tonight's dinner together.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep near Agrigento.

Day 6: Roman Mosaics and Syracuse

Sicily was also colonized by the Romans, which we'll learn about at today's first destination, the Villa Romana del Casale. Here we'll spend much of our morning surrounded by the world's richest and most colorful collection of Roman mosaics — including the time-bending "bikini girls" mosaic. On the road again, we'll stop to visit a working farm and meet its owner, followed by a midday feast. Then it's on to Syracuse. This evening we'll take a walk through the city's historic old town on the island of Ortygia.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep on the island of Ortygia.

Day 7: Syracuse, Past and Present

This morning we'll learn more about Ortygia and take a closer look at this small fishing island. We'll explore the local market, stroll through centuries in the Cathedral of Syracuse, and marvel at the masterpiece of the Piazza del Duomo. This afternoon we'll enjoy a lively performance of Sicily's traditional puppet theater, where the language is no barrier to entertainment. Then the rest of the day is yours to wander through Syracuse's delightful jumble of Greek, Roman, medieval, and Baroque layers — or settle on a quiet park bench with a harbor view.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep on the island of Ortygia.

Day 8: Mount Etna, Wine, and Taormina

We'll begin our day with a short drive up the coast to Catania, where we'll take in breathtaking views of Mount Etna while learning more about the volcano with a spirited presentation by one of the University of Catania's volcanologists. Next, we'll visit a winery on the slopes of the mountain, where we'll enjoy a tour through the vineyards and taste some of Sicily's deservedly famous wine before heading to Taormina. After we check into our hotel, we'll take a neighborhood orientation walk. This evening, join in the local passeggiata to feel the pulse of Sicilian culture, then find the ideal people-watching spot to enjoy your gelato and dinner on your own.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Taormina.

Day 9: Seductive Taormina

This morning we'll tour Taormina's remarkably situated ancient Greek theater, which is still used today for open-air performances. This afternoon you're free to luxuriate in this cliffhanging, Old World resort town. Wander through its elegant gardens, posh cafés, and shops; ride a cable car down to the beach; or explore the nearby mountain top village of Castelmola. Any way you slice it, you'll have a ringside seat to savor il dolce far niente (the sweetness of doing nothing), Sicilian style. This evening we'll meet up for a Sicilian pizza dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Taormina.

Day 10: Colorful Catania

This morning we're off to Catania, nestled at the foot of Mount Etna, where we'll tour the Museum of the WWII 1943 Landings in Sicily (Museo dello Sbarco). We'll learn how nearly a year before D-Day, Allied troops found themselves fighting against — and at the same time liberating — their Italian adversaries. After a brief neighborhood orientation, you're free to wander through Catania's famous fish market, admire the Baroque architecture of the grand Piazza del Duomo, or enjoy people-watching in one of the city's many cafés. We'll gather together tonight to say arrivederci, share travel memories, enjoy the freshest Sicilian food, and toast to new friends. Salute!

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Catania.

Day 11: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Catania's airport by taxi or shuttle bus. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Grazie e ciao!

Sicily is such an amazing place! Where else can you find such a unique combination of civilizations? The tour hit all of the 'must see' places, except perhaps Cefalu, which we visited separately after the tour. I wish we could have stayed longer in Palermo, Erice, and Ortygia, because there were so many sites that we just couldn't get to, but the tour would have to be longer, because I wouldn't want to cut out a single thing!

"How can I pick just one 'wow' moment? The pastry class with Maria was truly special and unique. Monreale was even more beautiful than I imagined. The mosaics at Villa Romana del Casale were amazing. There was at least one 'wow' moment every day, and I don't know if I can pick a favorite! How is Sicily not everyone's top 'dream' destination?"

This tour fulfilled exactly what I had hoped for in a bus tour - it was well curated, the guides were phenomenal, the level of activity was perfect, and all the meals included were the best meals of the trip. I would certainly do a Rock Steves tour again,

As my first big trip since 2019, I really appreciated the ease of doing a tour (not having to research and book all the individual hotels, deciding the route, etc.), the very high quality curation for the stops and activities, and the emphasis on health and safety. I felt so much better with masks required for the group and knowing that a negative test and proof of vaccination had to be shown.

Somehow – by chance, or by design – with the help of excellent guides, a collection of people with disparate interests and backgrounds come together and a sense of community develops. The bonds and friendships that form will continue well past the day we said goodbye in Catania. This was not our first Rick Steves tour. We still have friends from our first Tour in 2007.

"Our “Wow!” Moment was in our free time, encouraged by our guide. By chance, we arrived in Taormina for their Film Festival. Our first night we watched the restored 50th anniversary release of The Godfather with Francis Ford Coppola on stage, in the 2500 year old Greek/Roman theater in Taormina. Visible earlier, Etna was erupting in the background. To have watched any performance in that theater would have been magical!"

First, I have to rave about Nancy. She was/is an exceptional guide: well-organized, observant, knowledgeable, and a great sense of humor. I like the in depth view I received of Sicily and all the local people we met. I saw such a variety of places and did many different activities, but was also able to explore on my own.

I accompanied a friend who was going on the RS tour. Sicily was not even on my radar as a place to visit. My RS experience made me so grateful that I had the opportunity to be a part of this adventure. Having Nancy as our guide greatly enhanced what we could have achieved on our own - even as experienced travelers.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Probably the baroque church that Nancy took us to. I was told it wasn't on the regular RS schedule, but she and an archeologist took us. We saw many churches, but I really 'felt His presence' in that one."

This was my first RST but 2nd visit to Sicily. I expected a lot due to RST reputation and I was not disappointed! I believe the tour guide can make or break the trip and Alfio made this trip wonderful. The hotels were excellent, the included food was extremely plentiful and delicious, the local guides were so knowledgeable, the itinerary and free time was just right, and the group was interesting and fun (although a few may have not read how active it was). Loved the cookie making and winery.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My first wow moment was the email informing us of a change to the tour guide. It was Alfio!! I hoped it would be him as I had heard him on Rick's podcasts. My personal wow moment was walking up to Sanctuary of Madonna della Rocca and then to Castelmola. I had done this 11 years ago and wanted to be able to do it again! I went back to Bar Turissi, climbing the 4 flights to the top; sat drinking an almond wine in a cool breeze, listening to the bell tower, Il Volo, and the off tune waiter."

The tour itself was great and informative. It had great pace and really showed the many faces of Sicily. Alfio was engaging, helpful, informative and showed great maturity when things got a bit tough. The tour was clouded by the virus which eventually hit over 2/3rd of all the group. Near the end, there was a lot of anxiety due to the number of positives. An area that I thought must be improved was what appeared to be real challenges in finding places for people to stay once infected.

Tour guides works hard to make everything happen as planned. After touring on the South of Italy where Covid protocols were strictly adhered to, the guides on this tour were much more casual about the Covid protocols. When on the bus they did not check that people were wearing their masks and wearing them correctly (not below the nose). As a result many people took 10-20 minutes before putting on their mask. Guides just sat down at the front of the bus and never looked back.

A wonderful tour in such unique part of Italy. Touring around the the Island there was so much diversity from area to area. Anderea our tour guide did such a great job of letting us experience the culture and sights and finding historical and fun places to visit. We had a nice tour group of people to share our experiences with. All the local guides we had added so much to our knowledge about the area we visited.A nice selection of cities to spend our time visiting.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Ortygia was one of my favorite places to visit. A fun place to explore, walking along the the beautiful sea wall and exploring the cute little alleyways and streets. It felt so comfortable here. Also loved going to the puppet theatre and play. Also Taromina was great because it gave us a wonderful view of Mt. Etna. It was fun to view the red molten lava at night flowing down the mountain from a new fissure that had just recently opened up."

We enjoyed the tour. We learned a great deal. Generally the tour was well run with a few exceptions that I will describe later in the review.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The family dinner in Sorrento! I find restaurants in Italy are very touristy and repetitive. Eating in restaurants becomes very boring very quickly since it is hard to find restaurants with a wider selection. The family dinner was just the opposite. The food was outstanding in its variety and quality. It was a joy to share the table with all the family members."

Generally a good experience similar to past tours with RS. Tour size a bit large at 28, but with the communicator device each person received, comments of tour leader were clear and complete. Thought the group worked well together...made new friends. Thought the hotel stays were well organized and accommodations reasonable. Found the need to continue to use bottled water, at an added cost, cumbersome.

An incredible, unforgettable tour of Sicily. The island is rich in history, has magnificent views, and offers gastronomical delights everywhere. Our guide Nina was amazing. She shared her knowledge of the culture of Sicily with enthusiasm and gave tips for our free time. She led us through the time frame of civilizations that passed through Sicily, leaving imprints on buildings and the culture. This Rick Steves tour has whetted my appetite for more post-pandemic adventures.

Since this was my first time on a tour, I was slightly anxious as to what the experience would be like. Awesome tour guide, great roof-top hotels, fabulous food, amazing historical venues and new friends provided for an outstanding vacation. Timing is everything and it was on point with our guide, bus driver, all venues we visited and dined. Having a tour guide that is familiar with Sicily was comforting and fun!

Favorite "WOW" moment

Nancy was an exceptional guide, knowledgeable, fun, extremely helpful in difficult situations and an absolute professional! The Bus driver Antonio was safe and efficient, always willing to lend a hand. The restaurants and food were excellent, The tours- terrific. I would have like to spend more time at the valley, needed a sun umbrella / water. Hotels were fine except Ortega where I had to climb a flight of stairs to bed and Romano house-dirty moldy questionable area. glad I didn't get stuck.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My wow moment was the Taormina when I climbed to the top of the castle. It wasn’t on the list but I found it early one morning. Also when I realized only 3 other people stuck to the “pack super light” rule and everyone else was well dressed and fresh, I knew I had made a packing error. Wearing the same clothes over was a little much for me and made me feel sloppy and unkempt. I won’t make that mistake again. Especially with the 80 year old lugging their suitcases with no problem."

First time ever on a tour. As we always have used Rick Steves tour books for our own European vacation plans, it made sense for us to look first to a Rick Steves tour of Sicily. This was our first time to Sicily. As we were planning to go with friends of 51 years, we all decided that itinerary shown for this Sicilian tour would be perfect for all of us. A great tour overview of a very special destination. We knew the standards would be high and the guides expert. We were not disappointed.

"Too many to limit to one. If I had to name but a few, and not in any particular order - the Valley of the Temples; Mount Etna and Taomina; Duomo di Monreale; the Baroness and her food/country estate. For me, Sicily was one big WOW. Truly amazing on so many levels."

This was our first Rick Steves Tour.In many of the write ups about Rick Steves Tours, by Rick Steves people, we got the impression that hotels were not good, accommodations were spartan, bathrooms had to be shared, etc. I guess our expectations were low because of these write ups. We found hotels and accommodations to be just fine. The tour director was wonderful. We enjoyed the other guests on the tour with us. All in all the tour was a very pleasant experience.

I had so much fun and learned so much in this tour! Alfio was an outstanding guide, sharing his passion for all that Sicily had to offer, and his enthusiasm and great sense of humor was thoroughly enjoyable. Sicily has my heart. Stephanie and Nancy were such lovely tour guides: knowledgeable, kind, and helpful. Our group members gelled well during all the gelato tasting and vineyard visiting. At the end of the tour I commented about how quickly it had gone by, yet as I looked back to the beginning is seemed so long ago. It then occurred to me that we had done and seen SO MUCH. The variety of sights and activities was fantastic! We participated in activities that I never could have imagined, certainly not if I had been traveling on my own. Sicily is exciting and beautiful and I enjoyed the sites/activities and our tour guide. True to the description on your website, the tour is super active. I don't think everything we did added value, but it did add to the exhaustion factor some days. I think the schedule could benefit from an edit to allow people to catch their breath. Example: The salt facility after our visit to Mozi (sp?). I would have liked to go back to Trapani to wander around instead.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Our visit to the Valley of the Temples museum and temple sites boggled my mind. The gigantic reconstructed pillar at the museum, in the form of a human, allowed me to almost grasp the sheer enormity of the Temple of Zeus which now lays in ruins. I still can't really form a mental picture of what it would have looked like close up or at a distance, but WOW!"

Our tour guide, Stephanie, was terrific and did everything she could to accommodate all of our needs and whims. Perhaps I expecting too much of Sicily itself. Also, there seemed to be a lot of redundancy...go to the church in the piazza, find the market place, look at the fish and octopi. And to top it off I don't really care to shop. So there you have it. A traveler who does not enjoy traipsing into hot stuffy shops to buy key chains. I enjoyed my quiet time on benches quite a lot.

From meeting one of our tour family members at the front desk of the hotel the morning of the tour, to dinner with a few of our "dysfunctional family members" after the tour was over, and everything in between, the tour was fantastic. The history, geography, food, the folks on the tour, and the people we met along the way made for a truly incredible experience. And Alfio, our guide, topped it all off by sharing his historical knowledge, his humor, and his passion for Sicily. Magnifico!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"This is actually quite difficult. There were so many truly spectacular sights and moments. I would have to say that the Greek/Roman theater in Taormina topped them all. My complete Sicilian immersion can be summed up in one word: fantastico! Our charming tour guide Alfio shared his Sicilian zest for life through his love of country and culture with fine foods, wine, and conversation. Sicily is diverse: food, topography, history all vary across the island, creating a complex sense of what Sicily offers and is about today. The 11-day tour encompassed much of the diversity, showing a realistic glimpse of modern Sicily and the joy of living that is part of Sicilian culture. Italian pastries aren't as sweet as those in America; I'll be using less sugar from now on when baking.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There are many wows in Sicily: food including wine and gelato, sites and sights, seeing how ancient ruins and systems are part of current life. But the WOW factor for the tour was our guide, David Tordi. He provided the context for understanding. David shared his knowledge, answering questions, explaining Sicilian ways: how to cross a busy street safely, how to get a waiter's attention. His patience, humor and concern were sincere, helpful, meaningful. Plus, he sang and strummed a guitar!"

What an amazing island - Sicily. I don't know how anyone could visit without a tour, or spend less than 10 days. There is that much diversity - cultural, historical, culinary, and beauty. Our 10th RS tour, and we were happy travelers at the end. Again, I believe a very good itinerary was made outstanding by our guide Virginia, and the local guides sharing their insights. The strength of the guide staff remains the best part of RS tours. Fascinated with the extensive history in Sicily to learn about. Weather issues challenged a couple days, but Virginia adjusted the schedule/walk with skill. Enjoyed the group meals and a few restaurants recommended in the guidebook.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The mosaics at the Villa Romana del Casale was my favorite. The cathedral in Monreale was a close second, but disappointed that we did not have more time both in the cathedral and to spend more time exploring the town. My one criticism of this tour: it deserves at least one more full day. Palermo deserves more time and a much more extensive walking tour. Monreale deserves a full half day or more. Both were short-changed by the current itinerary"

It was excellent. The tour guide kept the group moving from one event to the next. When you plan your own tour there is always dead time, like waiting for the museum to open or looking for a restaurant. With Rick Stevens you are traveling from one event to the next. There is no wasted time waiting for an event to happen. For instance, we went to a cooking demonstration put on just for our group. The cooks were waiting for us to show up to start.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Valley of The Temples was the most impressive. I enjoyed the Salt Museum with the Archimedes screw as I used to work in a (mechanized) salt plant with 50,000 acres of solar ponds. The tour had two seven course meals. There was way too much food and I had to stop eating after the third course. There was a lot of food thrown away. The "WOW" moment was realizing that the food is used to keep the party going to allow for more time for social interaction with my travel mates, not just to eat"

Agrigentos Valley of the Temples- we're so glad to have seen and experienced these sights. Loved the sea towns, going to Castelmola and looking at the landscape and seascape from the heavens."

I can tell you in 7 characters: amazing. First, our tour guide, Tommaso, was great (see above), the itinerary was packed with wonderful experiences, Massimo our bus driver was fantastic, comfortable, clean bus, snacks, Tommaso's stories during the bus rides, amazing historic sites, local guides, wonderful meals. A tried and true tour that I can tell has been continuously improved to perfection over time.

"Every day was special on this tour. I especially enjoyed the Palazzo Federico visit with the Contessa who gave a warm, personal tour of her home and interesting apperitivo which was a fun introduction to Sicily. I had a "wow" day visiting the 2400-year old unfinished temple in Segesta, the Maria Grammatico lunch spread and pastry making adventure with walk around Erice and sunset in Trapani. Walking inside a Mt. Etna crater was great and with 100mph winds we couldn't manage to walk around it!"

This was our 4th RS tour and knew it would be packed with history, experience, and activity and was not disappointed. I'm really happy we decided to go to Sicily with RS and really see everything we wanted to see without the hassle of logistics. I think the group and our guide Alfio worked well to meet up on time and keep moving from place to place. I also really really appreciate the guides that are from the country rather than expat guides living there. So Alfio was perfect for this tour.

"Fortunately I take a lot of photos as each place is a collection of 'wow's'. Sicily was particulary interesting in that every place was so different. Between churches, greek temples, salt harvest, to Mt. Etna. And each time I see a church on the schedule I think it might be an "ABC" another bloody church, it isn't. So one of my wow moments was at the church in Syracuse (former Greek temple, Mosque, church) and the feeling that we are all the same in our humaness."

This was my first trip to Sicily. I had no real idea what expect, but our guide did a masterful job of explaining the past as well as the present. Sicily's place in the middle of the Med was a cross road for trade, conquest and a melding of peoples. Alfio's passion, humor and knowledge was enlightening.

Sicily was just fantastic. We had great weather everyday of the tours. All the local guides were great. Alfio, our tour guide was exceptional. He provided great details about his country. "It is hard to choose my favorite WOW moment, because every place we visited was a wow moment. My favorite site seen would have to be Mt. Etna. We had Boris, a volcanologist, as our local guide for Mt. Etna. He shared a wealth of knowledge about Mt. Etna. That same night I was able to view Mt Etna from my balcony and see the red "lava blurps" at the top of the volcano. It was just stunning."

I had very high expectations about going to Sicily. I wanted to experience the diverse history of this unique island. I was hoping to see the layers upon layers of different cultures that had inhabited Sicily. I have to say my expectations where exceeded by 100 percent. I was overwhelmed by the amount of history this one island contains. Sicily gave me an amazing look of it's past history as well as an appreciation for it's modern day amalgamation of it's culture.

"I'm going to be very cliche here and say Mt. Etna, but let me explain. In Taormina, Boris the Volcanologist had just given us his presentation on Mt. Etna, and casually said you can go out on the deck of the hotel when it gets dark and see Mt. Etna shooting the lava out of its dome. Yes, Mt. Etna was erupting every 10 or 15 minutes. They were small polite eruptions, not something Hollywood would produce, yet spectacular to me as a witness to the amazing feats our planet produces."

I was hesitant to go to Sicily because I believed we would need a car (and I'm a really crappy driver). I also don't like big groups, I'm not a good listener, and I like to wander around on my own when I travel - so just not really cut out for tours. But my aunt has been wanting to go for a long time, and Rick Steves has a lot of cred bc of his guidebooks. We both had a wonderful time. Sicily in 11 days was our first ever guided tour. We previously toured Italy using Rick's books and were please with his recommendations for important sites, hotels, and restaurants. We were able to focus on all the great sites in Sicily, savor the seafood dishes, and experience the travel with new friends.

"Palermo was my wow moment. We expected Palermo to be gritty and look like it had a long battle with Mafia domination. Now, Palermo appears to be a city of individual marketeers rather than organized gangsters. Street musicians played for donations, people in the market hawked fresh caught swordfish and octopus, restaurant waiters stood outside with their menus, and the church bells rang often reminding people it was time for Mass. Alfio showed us two memorials dedicated to judges killed by Mafia"

Sicily is one surprise followed by another. From the depth of history to the beauty of the countryside to the excellent food and wine to the laid back and friendly Sicilians - the place grows on you. It is almost too subtle. I think you get a little dazed by all you are taking in. It is a busy tour, so you need to pay attention, but you will be richly rewarded for your efforts.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The picnic lunch under the trees behind the Whitaker Foundation Museum on Mosia island. The food was absolutely delicious, the wine also. The tour group conversation was great, the sky was a beautiful Mediterranean blue, the temperature was perfect, and the setting was lovely with a light breeze stirring the leaves in the trees. This is layered on top of the realization that people had walked this area (and maybe picnicked on this spot) over 2,500 years ago."

Outstanding tour. This is our 3rd Rick Steve tour. The history, the food, the people, the sites - wow! The group meals and wine were fantastic. We had a wonderful tour of Sicily. I was captivated by the ruins of the many ancient conquering peoples. Where do I begin? Experiencing Sicily with this great group was a wonderful adventure into a lovely island rich with history grounded in several interesting cultures. Each town was interesting in its own way; I particularly enjoyed traveling so much of the coastline and walking the towns, particularly Ortygia and Taormina and the hilltown of Castelmola - and oh, that afternoon view to Trapani and the sea from Erice! "Riding our bus from Trapani to Agrigento I saw a road sign with the name of my grandparents' town. I looked around at the beautiful scenery and I felt sad that they had to leave such beauty. I also was completely unaware of Sicily's part in WWII. That whole story was amazing. I wish my father was alive so I could talk to him about it."

This trip exceeded my expectations, especially the level of planning, the quality of the guide, local guides, guest speakers, the activities and sights, and the wonderful meals. We could not have planned all of these details ourselves. Before the tour, my husband was not so sure about the expense, but as we experienced the sights, the meals, and the hassle-free transportation, we both knew we had made a smart decision in booking with Rick Steves!

"One of my most beautiful moments was on the restaurant balcony of our Taormina hotel. To my right, Mt. Etna sputtered a tiny plume of gray, straight ahead the cerulean blue ocean sparkled, lovely red and pink tropical flowers peeked around every corner, and the storybook, white stone town of Taormina climbed from below up the hilltop. Even better, I was with my husband, a lively and very friendly group of fellow travelers, and the most warm and interesting tour guide, Alfio!"

Wonderful. Had some initial reservations about the cost of the tour sans airfare, but with the expert local guides, wonderful included dinners and lunches, and Alfio's masterful use of classroom (i.e bus) time, concluded the cost was an exceptional value. Saw and learned things we surely would have missed had we planned trip on our own.

"Polpo bollito at Palermo market, buffet and pastry lesson at Marie Grammatico's, wine-tasting on Aetna, Contessa's home tour, Alberto's presentation at the Museo della Sal, Valley of Temples guided walk (exceptional guide), pizza lesson and dinner with Corado in Taormina, boat ride and Caravagigo's "Burial of St Lucy in Ortygia . . . so hard to choose. Tie breaker: Alfio's surprise treat at Catania market!"

I really enjoyed the Sicily Tour from start to finish!! The group was easy to travel with and very social. Alfio was our guide and his knowledge, passion for Sicily, and humor throughout the tour made it very memorable. We expected the food and wine to be amazing and it was above our expectations. The hotels were well located and the provided lunches exceptional. The visits to the Palazzo Ferderico, the Trapani salt flat and the cannoli pastry lesson in Erice were great. Sicilian Pizza !!!!

This was my first Rick Steve's Tour and I was not disappointed. We had a great group of 28 people. Just the right size. I had been on one with 40+ people and the smaller size allowed us to get to know everyone. The tour was the right length although it was still hard to leave. Our guide Alfio was terrific; very knowledgeable, friendly, funny and patient. I will definitely consider another tour. The only apprehension I had was getting to the first hotel on my own but it was not bad.

"Definitely Taormina. It was so breathtaking and with a view of Mt. Etna. The Greek ruins at Agrigento were also incredible."

This was our 5th Rick Steves tour and, as always, coordinated to perfection. Our guide, Alfio, had everything well planned out from the Welome Meeting to the final dinner. The sites throughout Sicily were amazing and being able to tap into Alfio's knowledge and passion for his country was truly outstanding. The history of Sicily from the ancient ruins to the effects of WW II was certainly a learning experience.

"We have done a lot of European travel and have seen some beautiful ancient sites but the Villa Romana del Casale was truly a WOW moment for me. I have never seen such well preserved mosaics. They were truly breathtaking. I could have spent hours just marveling at this beautiful site."

I find it difficult to put into words how exceptional this tour was. From the tour guide to the venues to the attractions, this far exceeded my expectations. I experienced more on this trip in 11 days than I could have on my own in a month.

The tour had a pleasing mix of ancient ruins, churches, delicious cuisine, educational experiences and natural beauty. The pace was about right. Our guide really took good care of us. I especially appreciated his flexibility in managing our schedule to allow us to visit Mt. Etna when the weather was good. I would recommend this tour and this guide to almost anyone.

"Monreale Cathedral was very impressive and was my favorite tour. I also enjoyed walking on the craters on Mt. Etna. Another favorite was thetour of the castle in Palermo with the countess. She was a very gracious hostess."

We had a great group of of people and Donald was a wonderful guide. Donald was informative, shared interesting and humorous stories about the places we were seeing, and provided us with excellent suggestions for eating and free time on our own. The weather was bad the day we were supposed to visit Mt. Etna, so Donald rearranged things so that we saw the WW II museum in Catania instead of going to the volcano and then we went to Mt. Etna on the day set for the museum.

I cannot say enough about this tour. We were able to see all the available sites of high interest. There were twl that we visited on our own in advance of the trip (Ragusa, Monica,) but these were not easily accessible to bus travel. At each stop the tour followed a predictable pattern: check in, orientation tot he area, major tour event, downtime. The group we were in was exceptional and we all got along. The knowledge of the local guides was most impressive.

I have been on four Rick Steves tours, all of which were great. This one exceeded any possible expectations and was fabulous, wonderful, marvelous, fun, fantastic! Every day had a "wow" that was worthy of being the highlight of the entire trip. Being late in the season, we virtually had many sights to ourselves and that was great. Rainer was outstanding in every possible way. I loved, loved, loved, this tour!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The palace and the Contessa, Eurice and Maria, The Greek temples, the Villa Romana del Casale and the mosaics, the vulcanologists, even the puppet show. If I had to choose only one, it would be the mosaics at Villa Romana del Casale. Maybe my real "wow" was how this tour over delivered every single day."

The tour exceeded my expectations. The bookings of hotels, local guides and restaurants went very smoothly. Travel companions were great. There were no "high maintenance" individuals as I usually encounter on other trips. We all got along well and helped each other out.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I would have to say that the Cathedral in Ortygia summarized our history lesson perfectly. It started out as a Greek Doric temple to Athena, then a Roman Temple to Minerva, a Byzantine Basilica, an Arab Mosque, a Norman fortress/church and finally a Catholic Cathedral. All the architectural elements can still be identified. At night, a light projection on the east side of the cathedral illumines the Greek columns, and contrasts them from the dark filled-in walls."

What I really enjoyed about the tour was the size of the group. How Rainer took our pictures at the beginning of the tour with our names on them so that we could remember everyone's name. Only suggestion would be to put where they lived. I liked that we were able to rotate in the bus and many have times have our seat to ourselves. I have to give a big "Thank You" to our bus driver who was an excellent driver, and he kept his bus very clean. He also had a big smile every day.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I had many "Wow" moments, but I think my favorite was Mt Etna, on a beautiful clear sunny day. We were able to get to our hotel in time to see the sun setting behind Mt Etna also. I loved the towns of Taormina, and Syracuse because we were so close to the sea."

Perfect blend of history, culture, walking, climbing, and free time. And the FOOD was almost center stage. I have been referring to this as my gastronomic tour of Italy. Was a whirlwind tour through history, and I am not a history buff so essentially I learned so very much. Already starting to plan my next trip.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were so very many but the one that took me most by surprise was the WWII museum in Catania. I went in feeling a bit indifferent about it but left emotionally moved. Rainer's narration was deliberate, powerful, and emotionally impactful. My father was a WWII veteran, he fought in Europe, he kept most of his stories to himself, didn't feel "the girls" needed to hear his stories. Walking through that museum I could see his face in almost every GI picture. What a gift. Now, tears again."

When To Go & Weather

Sicily's mild climate makes it a good place to visit nearly year-round. However, the months of March, April, May, June, and October are best for combining the convenience of peak season with smaller crowds and pleasant weather. September is the busiest. Visiting between November and February offers the benefit of missing out on the sweat, stress, and crowds of the tourist season, along with cool and crisp weather.

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements and transfers are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Palermo (PMO) and out of Catania (CTA) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or overnight stay. Note: Flights to and from Sicily often require at least one connection, and in some cases an additional night's stay in Europe.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Sicily guidebook.
