Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Italy

We'll gather at our Rome hotel at 4 p.m. for a "Welcome to Italy" group meeting. Afterward, we'll take an evening stroll through the meandering streets of "village" Rome on our way to tonight's trattoria, where we'll get acquainted over dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Rome.

Day 2: Layers of Rome

This morning we'll tour the world's first museums, the Capitoline. Here we'll learn about Rome's golden age through its most treasured sculptures, including the sublime Dying Gaul, the imposing Marcus Aurelius on horseback, and the emblematic She-Wolf suckling Rome's tiny founding brothers, Romulus and Remus. Then we'll take an eye-opening walk along the east bank of the Tiber, where we'll learn about the rich, yet often-overlooked, history of Rome's Jewish Ghetto. The rest of the day is yours to wander through the Roman Colosseum and Forum, enjoy the panoramic city view from atop the nearby Victor Emmanuel Monument, or make a modern-day pilgrimage to St. Peter's Basilica and Vatican City.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Rome.

Day 3: Tivoli and the Gargano Peninsula

We'll leave Rome early, stopping in the nearby hills to learn about the Roman Emperor Hadrian at the ruins of his monumental villa at Tivoli. An enthusiastic traveler and builder, Hadrian's lasting legacy includes his great wall across Britain, the domed Pantheon, and his stylish beard. Then we'll drive up and over the Apennine spine of Italy and on to the shores of the Adriatic Sea. Our destination this evening is the tip of the rugged Gargano Peninsula, one of the most beautiful areas of southern Italy — and still unknown to American travelers. We'll share dinner tonight at our cliffside hotel.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 6 hours. Sleep in Vieste.

Day 4: Vieste and the Adriatic Coast

Vieste's beaches are packed with Italians in mid-summer. But when we arrive, we'll find a peaceful contrast to the hustle and bustle of Rome. We'll take a boat cruise along the craggy Gargano Coast, marveling at the picture-perfect coves, hidden grottos, and unusual rock formations that make this coastline unforgettable. We'll return to Vieste for a pasta-making demonstration and lunch, followed by plenty of time to wander through the town or simply luxuriate on the beach.

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). Boat: 1½ hours. No bus. Sleep in Vieste.

Day 5: Alberobello and Matera

Today we'll head off the tourist path, continuing through Puglia and into the Basilicata region, with a stop to learn about and sample some local wines, meats, and cheeses. In Alberobello, we'll explore cone-shaped, stone trulli houses that are still lived in today. Then we'll drive on to the town of Matera, known for its unique Sassi neighborhoods made up of ancient cave dwellings, where we'll enjoy a delightful dinner together.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Matera.

Day 6: The Wonders of Matera

With the help of a locally grown expert, we'll learn the stories of old and new Matera. We'll begin our day discovering the wonders of the 9,000-year-old Sassi. We'll go inside a Sasso home to gain an appreciation for the cave-dwelling conditions endured by the residents until they were relocated 60 years ago. We'll continue our education with a visit to a rock-hewn church and a look at the new town. You'll have the rest of your day free to wander through the different layers of Matera. This evening, watch — or better yet join — the ritual passeggiata of strolling locals in this authentic, untouristed part of Italy.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Matera.

Day 7: Paestum and the Amalfi Coast

Early this morning we'll drive into the Campania region and tour an organic water buffalo farm that produces the prized local specialty, mozzarella di bufala. We'll go into the barns and learn how this tasty delicacy is made and enjoy a gourmet lunch together featuring (you guessed it) fresh buffalo mozzarella. After lunch, we'll continue on to Paestum to marvel at this site's awe-inspiring lineup of three ancient Greek temples — the best-preserved collection in Europe. Then we'll follow the cliff-clinging seaside road to Salerno, where we'll take a scenic boat ride to our final destination: the Amalfi Coast.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Boat: 1 hour. Sleep on the Amalfi Coast.

Day 8: Free Day on the Amalfi Coast

The day is all yours to enjoy the breathtaking Amalfi Coast. Take a local bus along the twisting roads and wild beauty of the Amalfi highway, hopping off to explore cliffside villages, or take advantage of the sea and take a public boat to the neighboring towns. Check out the sweeping views from Ravello, the candy-striped church in Amalfi town, and the narrow streets and posh shops of Positano, or let gravity pull you down to a beach to relax upon. Tonight will be a great night to find a trattoria with a glorious sunset view.

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No bus. Sleep on the Amalfi Coast.

Day 9: Pompeii and Sorrento

This morning we'll make a short drive to serene Sorrento, stopping for a thoughtful visit to unlucky Pompeii, where, with an ace local guide, we'll get a look at everyday life frozen in time two milennia ago. After free time to explore more of Pompeii on your own and enjoy lunch, we'll continue on to Sorrento, our cliff-hugging home set amongst the lemon groves. This afternoon, we'll take an orientation walk through town on our way to watch the creation of an Italian culinary masterpiece — gelato. The rest of your evening is free to explore more of this spectacular cliffside setting.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Sorrento.

Day 10: Serene Sorrento and Capri

Today is all yours. Take a boat ride to Capri, where you can then board a much smaller boat to the deservedly famous Blue Grotto. Or, spend all or part of the day enjoying Capri's remarkable views, winding lanes, fancy summer homes, and lovely gardens. Or, stay in Sorrento and wander through the shop-lined back streets, stopping to savor il dolce far niente — the sweetness of doing nothing. This evening we'll meet for a home-hosted dinner with a local Sorrento family.

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No bus. Sleep in Sorrento.

Day 11: Classy, Gritty Naples

After a morning drive, we'll have an easy introduction to Naples at the hilltop Museo Capodimonte, home to southern Italy's best collection of Renaissance paintings, including masterpieces by Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio, and El Greco. After lunch in the city that invented pizza, we'll be introduced to Naples' grittier side on a Vespa-dodging, laundry-flapping, slice-of-Neapolitan-life walking tour through the heart of this chaotic, memorable city.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Naples.

Day 12: Exploring More of Naples

We'll begin our morning with a visit to the serene Cappella Sansevero, home to amazingly lifelike sculptures that have to be seen to be believed. We'll continue touring the greatest treasures of Pompeii, brought to Naples' National Archeological Museum for safekeeping. We'll also be dazzled by the Farnese collection, including the largest single sculpture ever recovered from antiquity: the Farnese Bull. This larger-than-life riot of animal, human, and divine struggle was adored and painstakingly restored by Michelangelo. Then, armed with the confidence and Neapolitan street smarts you've learned from your guide, your afternoon is free for making your own discoveries. Tonight, we'll get together for a special dinner to share travel memories and toast new friends. Salute!

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Naples.

Day 13: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Naples' airport by taxi, easily arranged through our hotel. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Grazie e ciao!

Informative, varied, hitting highlights in each of the cities/areas visited. A sense of family bonding was fostered and encouraged among tour participants. I gained understanding of Italian geography, history, cuisine, culture: a better sense of what life is like today in Italy, as well as knowing more of Italy's past.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"When reflecting on the tour, what left me with the greatest sense of Italian life today was dinner at Luigi and Teresa's comfortable home. (Hope I've correctly remembered names!) Home cooking was delicious, many items home grown, but seeing how an Italian family interacts on a project was heart-warming and eye-opening. Multiple generations, extended family, joined together with warmth and seeming pleasure to serve guests, then washed and dried dishes by hand. I was well fed and felt blessed."

With COVID, heat, masks and pickpockets ever on the mind, I entered Southern Italy with a cautious attitude, leaving a fondness for that area. Our 4th RS tour continued the the expected level of excellence starting with our guide, Lisa. She knew Italy very well, giving info often repeated by local guides, plus she had a great sense of humor, monitored the participant’s needs and adjusted as needed. Some of the better hotels, and excellent local attractions. Well programmed throughout.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Matera for starters. Coming to the edge and peering into the hidden city was majestic as well as sleeping in a cave. Benissimo! Vieste boat ride provided a thrilling look at the coastline and the surprise of sneaking into the caves. Let’s not forget the downpouring rain and flash flood. What a thrilling experience. Pompei, Positano and Sorrento were exceptional. And truthfully, the tour members who were punctual, respectful and great people to be with made the tour truly memorable. A wow tour!"

My guide Bea was outstanding. She made the trip fun. She was helpful and took charge. Jen was a great support. The tour was well designed and well executed. Some rain fell and things were reorganized but we did not miss a beat. Local guides, activities and group meals were all very nice.

"Hard to pick as the whole tour was outstanding. But some highlights were Matera, for me as a very magical place. The family meal in Sorrento was really special and our local guide in Rome, Francesca delivered historical information in a heartfelt and human centered way. My wife even cried over the stories Roman lives from 2000 years ago."

This was our 4th Rick Steves' tour. It overlapped with our 3rd tour, Venice, Florence, Rome. Our total of both tours was three weeks which turned out to be long for us. We were the oldest people on both tours. At ages 76 and 74 and with some injuries, we discovered that the tours were strenuous for us. We may be too old to pull our suitcases up stairs & streets to get to the bus. However, WE WERE SO GLAD WE DID IT. Our tour guide Beatrice was absolutely wonderful & we loved Jennifer too.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Pompeii was absolutely wonderful. The local guide told us so much about how advanced the Romans.were with their water systems, roads, sidewalks, & bathing. We wondered why their accomplishments were not carried forward. He said that it is like the Taliban in Afghanistan now. Conquerors come in and destroy progress. We loved the buffalo farm The buffalos eat as much as they want & get massages, They are trained to go to an automatic milking machine. A very good life and great mozzarella."

The tour was simply wonderful from beginning to end. Our guide, Bea Richichi, was intelligent, thoughtful, considerate, and lots of fun! You could tell how much she enjoyed sharing her homeland with us and went out of her way to make sure that we were able to do the things that we wanted to do in our “free” times. I’m so happy to have met her.

"So hard to pick just one. I totally enjoyed the Capitoline Museum tour with Francesca but it was seeing the “Veiled Christ” in Naples that actually gave me goosebumps and brought tears to my eyes. Pompeii was haunting and then to see the artwork, mosaics and other items from there in Naples was simply stunning."

This was the trip of a lifetime for our 50th wedding anniversary and it was way beyond our expectations!! This was also our first trip with a tour group and we loved it. Our guide, Lisa, went over and beyond for us and even arranged a yoga class by the pool. We especially loved all the local guides that took us on walking tours and museums. The demonstrations; pasta making, gelato making and tasting were wonderful. One of the highlights was the musical performance in Naples! Such a treat

We've visited countries in Europe several times in the past but given the uncertainty of Covid restrictions, we decided that it would be better to book the Southern Italy tour through Rick Steves. In the event of any Covid "issues," we felt confident that the Rick Steves organization would, "have our back." No Covid issues occurred for us fortunately, but we were blown away by the way the tour was conducted. Our tour guide, Lisa, was terrific. Great fun and very accommodating.

Lisa was an absolute joy and pleasure. I learned so much about our sites and Italian history. She was so pleasant and tried to accommodate the various requests from everyone. She helped us get a private boat tour around Capri and it was stands down the best time we all had as a group. I could have used a bit more downtime especially towards the end of the tour, but everything was so wonderfully done, I didn’t want to miss anything.

The quintessential RS Tour, days filled with exceptional sights and flavors of Italy. After a long wait for this tour overall it was great. Great tour members but surprised we had 28 with Covid still a problem, the largest number I’ve had, it felt like too many. Due to Issues caused by Covid(not our tour) we had a change of tour guides mid tour, this upset the rhythm of the tour, one guide had not done S Italy before and I felt we lost out due to that. Our bus driver made no effort to interact with us which was disappointing. Single room in Maiori was worst room, tiny/single bed.

The group bonded quickly and became a big family, looking out for each other and sharing experiences and time together. While this was great, 28 tour members was too large to maneuver through sites and crowds. We were under the impression, based on Rick’s earlier comments, that groups were to be smaller this year. the groups were to be smaller this year. There was so much to see and learn about it was difficult to remember what you saw and did the day before. 13 days were not enough.

"This tour was full of WOW moments from the great gelato a few blocks from our Rome hotel to the amazing rugged vistas around each corner as the bus carried us throughout the tour. As in all of our nine Rick Steves it was impossible to pick just one. Starting with the Capitoline museum in Rome, followed by Hadrians Villa to the boat cruise along the Gargano coast, the Trulli houses in Alberobello, the Sassi in Matera, the Buffalo farm operated like a commercial dairy in the U.S., the Amafi coast."

We'd been to "tourist" Italy several times before and thought we knew a bit about the place. This tour taught us that we haven't even scratched the surface--so many wholly new, wholly unexpected, and wholly delightful experiences!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We approached this question by asking ourselves, "OK, what place, or what adventure, would we like to re-experience?" There are many, but Matera topped the list. it blends a bit of Cappadocia, a bit of Ronda, a bit of Jerusalem, a bit of Mesa Verda, and, of course, a lot of southern Italy in a special light (a "Cezanne light" if you will) all its own. The city at twilight is mesmerizing."

This was our 2nd Rick Steves tour. We had never been on a 2 week vacation and were worried it'd be too long. Yes, we were tired, but it was so well organized that we could have stayed 2 more weeks. Everything (hotels, food, transportation, other travelers & especially Caterina!) was excellent. We saw places we would never have dreamed were out there. So far off the regular "tourist" path.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were many. But Matera was exceptional. The history, the buildings, the people. The pictures do not do it justice, but the ones I took at night take my breath away. You really feel what it was like living in the sassi. I could have stayed there a few more days."

My Southern Italy tour was a great experience following a 2 year covid shut down. Starting with a great guide, Katarina, locations, sights, meals, transportation, and the weather.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Well there were numerous wow moments of course never just one. Southern Italy as a whole is a WOW. Being allowed into the opera house to see a ballet in practice was unexpected an a wow. A family meal with Therese and Luigi and family a wow. Being taken into at least 10 grottos on our boat ride from Salerno to Maiori. Seeing Pompei with an outstanding local guide. Seeing the veiled Christ in situ. These are just a few."

Our wonderful guide, Sara and our bus driver showed us fascinating South Italy. Our local guides added their knowledge to teach our group about the history, culture and geography of each region. The Truilli, Sassi, Paestum and Pompei were favorites. The beauty of the Amalfi coast was wonderful, but I was really taken with Vieste. Loved the coastal boat ride on the Adriatic. I recommend Mondo Guide boat tour to Capri. Easy and was great fun. Enjoyed the small concert in Naples and museums.

"Pompeii. Our guided tour by Gaetano was excellent. I did not realize it covered such a large area and that there were so many parts of buildings, the theater, frescos, and mosaics. Fascinating. Another wow was the view of Amalfi Coast from the beautiful gardens at Villa Cimbrone in Ravello. And the food, wine and gelato."

We had a wonderful time. We saw places we would have never found on our own and the guide, Sara was excellent. The logistics and organization were flawless. The tour was heavy on ruins, monuments, museums, churches and galleries. I feel like I took a graduate course on classical history and art appreciation. The itinerary is very busy-6 cities with 2 nights each and lots of walking which was good for me but perhaps not all.

Sarah Corfield was an outstanding tour guide. Her communication skills, awareness and attentiveness were excellent. She handled the few challenges that did arise competently and in a very calm manner. The tour itinerary was well planned and provided a wonderful Southern Italy experience. The accommodations were excellent and in line with what is expected in a Rick Steves tour, local, very comfortable but not extravagant. The local guides were excellent, with the exception of Naples.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The "wow" moment for me was the boat ride from Vieste. The water, landscape and serenity wowed me in comparison to the Amalfi coast towns which were great, but crowded. This tour checked all the boxes for history, culture, food, lodging, weather, free time, scheduled time, etc. that I have come to expect from Rick Steves' tours (well, the weather was not in their control!). The tour was amazing and exhausting. Towards the end we determined that we wouldn't do another tour like this. The early morning hustle to get to the bus or tour seemed much harder this time. Wearing a mask all the time (we're fans of masks) was also hard. I'd urge a different method other than the day long bus ride to Vieste, or skip the town. We didn't think it worthy of a stop. My fourth RS tour was the most intense cultural and historical tour yet. Everyday offered a "wow" moment, even the free days. Very good tour although seemed rushed at times. Visited the buffalo farm and could have spent a little more time with the animals. Rush hour traffic out of Rome and Sorrento required early rising which was tough after being up late for dinners, etc. We were disappointed when we visited Amalfi town and were elbow to elbow with many large busloads of tourists (cruise ships possibly.) We had a wonderful time seeing and experiencing people and places we had never seen or even heard of before...This is one of the great things about an extremely knowledgeable tour company such as Rick Steves. "There were several "wow" times on the trip. Francesca, our local guide in Rome, was outstanding. The time she spent with us was eye-opening about the statuary in the Capitaline Museum. Then the boat trip in Vieste , with its beautiful white cliffs and amazing grottos, was inspiring. So gorgeous, and we had perfect weather, too. The city of Matera with its cave homes, churches and stores was fascinating to see and walk around in. Our huge, rock-hewn hotel was another "wow"."

We did two tours back to back, first Venice, Florence and Rome then the best of South Italy. After 10 days of wonderful museums and cathedrals it was great to get out to the countryside. This was our first Rick Steves tour, although we have been using his guide books since 2003. I was extremely impressed with how the tour was organized and how efficient it was run. We had done only one other tour(not your company) in 2004 of Northern Italy that left such a bad taste in our mouth we swore never to do another tour again. So glad we changed our minds and will definitely consider another Rick Steves tour in the future.

This was my first "organized tour" of any kind as always have planned & organized my own travel (individual, with my wife or with family) over my years (am 72). Prior to this RS's Tour, I could not imagine being on a bus with a group of folks I did not know etc & have to meet an "assigned" schedule. I do enjoy people & new experiences, but previously thought I'd have some "control" anxieties, ha! Needless to say almost every aspect of this RS's Tour was almost perfect & enjoyable.

The tour was well organized and a good combination of guided tours, activities and free time. Local guides were great. Our transportation was excellent, and , as advertised, we did a lot of walking. Accommodations were comfortable and clean and well located. Group meals were at interesting spots and generally very good. Having previously been on four other Rick Steves' tours, this tour was what I had expected: stimulating, fun and full of friendly, nice follow travelers.

"My "wow"was at a small music venue in Naples listening to talented musicians sing, play the piano, accordion and drum. For the previous hour, we had been drenched by rain and hail, taking refuge in a tiny cafe and then a church. A few of us were a bit lost under our new umbrellas bought from a street vendor. Our tour widened our understanding of Roman History and the current Italian culture. The trip was never one that we would remember for a long bus drive, every day was broken up. The South Italy tour is full of unique places and experiences. The flow of the tour seemed a bit off for me. There was a nice build of excitement going from Rome thru Matera, then a lull in the VERY touristy Posetano. Things picked back up in Sorrento, but for me ending the tour in Naples was a huge disappointment. This was our third RS tour - all in Italy. The Southern Italy tour was a nice balance of group vs. individual time. We favor locations and schedules that allow us to walk. This tour was great for that. Vieste stood out; a tourist town, certainly, but with a calm beauty in it's narrow lanes and sea views. Walking old Matera was like stepping into a drawing by Escher with it's maze of streets and steps. And our free day on the Amalfi Coast allowed us to walk the "Path of the Gods." Spectacular.

This was my 1st trip to Italy and I thought it was well worth the trip. I feel now more comfortable planning a future trip with family. I admit I have never been of vacation where I had to carry my luggage especially through city streets and as much as we moved around. If we were in one or two hotels, I probably would not have minded but I thought the frequency of the moves and the amount of walking, I really did not want to carry the bags, it felt like punishment.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Italy itself was a wow moment, but I have to say Pompeii was one that memorable. Disappointed the it was not well done ie walking through Pompeii was an incomplete because we did not see the actual people in the museum as I had imagined we would. The museum the day after had nothing to do with Pompeii and that left me cheated. We were fortunate to see The Opera House at Naples, The oldest in the world. That for sure was a WOW."

Caterina was fabulous. She is a perfectionist and has some anxiety BUT these traits blended together to make our tour terrific. She exhausts herself to cover everything!! We have been on 6 tours now and this one is the toughest. Days that go until 6 or 7 pm are too much. It needs to be a little less rigorous. I speak not for me but all tour members. Everyone was dragging on

This was my first RS tour and it was very impressive. Very well organized with activities to give us a very good flavor for the area we were in, food, museum visits, walking tours, local guides. The hotels were very nice and you could feel the love that the local people have for RS.

This tour was well organized, chock full of information both about the basic history of each town and background on life in Italy in general. Caterina prides herself on a tour well done and her outgoing nature has helped her to forge connections with the local guides and some of the shop/restaurant owners in each town. We were able to choose our shopping and restaurant experiences with ease and satisfaction as a result of her laying the groundwork for us.

We had such an amazing time! Our tour guide Caterina was so very informative and helpful in so many ways. We have never done a group tour before and this experience could not have happened if we didn't take this tour with a group. So much information came to us through Catriana and our other tour guides through the journey. Having an expert on the histories of all the places we went to was something that everyone should have on their first and even second journeys to places with deep histories.

Great trip, our first ever tour trip, must say outstanding, never could have done it ourselves or been given as much information on places visited, places we stayed were 3- stars up and very nice, beds were very comfortable and breakfast at all places was better than expected. Our tour operator was excellent, Caterina was very knowledgeable and very warm and personable. She made it for us very enjoyable and did help us for my wife had a knee problem after booking tour. She was great.

As always the tour was well planned with a solid itinerary and a very capable guide to ensure everything went well. The itinerary ensured we saw many of the best sites in the region and many things that most of us would not see if we were planning the trip on our own. The hotels were comfortable (in some cases with awesome views) and the included meals were very good. It was a very good trip.

"I thought about this a long time. There were 4 "wow" moments for me on this tour. One of these was provided by RS Tours and 3 were things we paid for ourselves on days off. The RS provided water tour in Vieste was awesome - a key highlight. Privately funded wows included 1) an Italian cooking class in Rome (90 euro each), a private driver on the Amalfi Coast incl visit to Ravello - (140 Euro each), and a semi-private boat trip to Capri (95 euro each for 6 people). Itinerary was awesome. Loved each place we visited and appreciated the variety. Visited Italy before, but never the south, which was different, incredibly interesting and charming. We covered some distance, but bus rides were not unbearable, broken up with stops along the way. I liked the two of days of free time to enjoy some special locations. Sometimes though, I felt there were a bit too many scheduled activities packed into a day and a few too many "shopping opportunities".

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Absolutely loved the boat trip in Vieste! Beautiful coast, popping into grottos and a beach stop. Another WOW was seeing the Greek temples at Paestum. And I had always longed to see Pompeii. It was fantastic, however, comparing notes with friends who had visited, I don't think we got the full experience. As ghoulish as it may seem, I think most of us wanted to see the casts of people, but we did not get to that area. If someone has not been to Rome, spend a couple of days before or after."

Very good. It covered the items that I thought it was going to cover quite well. Salvatore was our bus driver and he deserves every accolade. He never once lost his cool. Suspect that he wished he retired a year earlier

Really enjoyed this tour filled with so many wonderful activities. Nina did a wonderful job navigating twists and turns. Fell in love with Vieste and Matera - I hope they stay off the radar and don't get over-touristed! Loved that this tour didn't jam us into the Colosseum or Vatican Museums - I do think that substituting Herculaneum for Pompeii might be a good idea because, well, selfie-sticks and huge groups have really taken over Pompeii.

My first RS tour. Overall experience: Outstanding! Guide Nina was the best! Local guides and driver - fabulous. The schedule, balance between group/travel/free time was just right. Perfect itinerary! Tour participants all got along great! Bus was comfortable, clean, made occasional stops, saw beautiful countryside. RS sets expectations for tour participants, my favorite being "No grumps"! I had set very high expectations for this trip. My expectations were not only met, but surpassed!

"At least one "wow" moment every day! Some highlights: MATERA - 5 stars! History, sassi, cave hotel. VIESTE - cruise along the coast was lovely. Gorgeous free afternoon to enjoy the town & hotel beach. SORRENTO - free day I took a RS recommended private boat to/around Capri. An absolutely fantastic day! Dinner with Luigi and family at their home was a special treat. My all encompassing "wow" moment came at the end of the trip. WOW! This RS tour not only met, but far exceeded my high expectations!"

this was our 5th RS tour and I believe the best experience yet. My husband's ancestors emigrated from South Italy and so the cities and villages , the food the culture and especially the warmth of the people made this a very personal experience for him and me. Rome is magical with its hustle and bustle of everyday modern life set on a classical stage of Splendor and Art.

This was a very good tour and Nina was a real professional considering the detours we had to take. She was delightful, funny, and very informed. We simply love Italy! We have now been on 3 RS tours in Italy and we find ourselves still wanting more. Nina and the local guides added so much to our understanding of the people and culture of South Italy. Francesca was our local guide in Rome in 2007 and again on this trip. She was wonderful both then and now. The emotion we felt touring the Capitoline Museums with her explanation was quite moving. Every day of the tour was filled with so much more than we could ever imagine doing on our own.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The travel day from Matera to Positano so represented why we love Rick Steves tours. We had a very long, challenging, but great day. From the coastal landslide, a WWII unexploded bomb highway closure, Salvatore negotiating numerous hairpin turns and finally Nina's intro to Positano in the dark, we had an exciting, rewarding day that included Matera, buffalo mozzarella, temple ruins in Paestum, and chilling bus rides down to Positano. The resilience of our guide Nina and our group was incredible."

Over all very good, but this particular tour involved too much time on the bus. Traffic and narrow, windy mountainous roads were partly to blame, especially from Vieste on. Our bus was too big for some of these narrow, windy roads, which impacted time spent on the bus and other vehicles attempting to navigate these roads. At times, I felt sorry for our bus driver, who patiently dealt with these nerve-racking conditions. You might take a look at reconfiguring this Southern Italy tour...(cf. # 16)

"The dinner with Luigi and Teresa in Sorrento was a memorable highlight. Matera is a must given its history and uniqueness; Paestum, Salerno, Positano, Sorrento, Capri, Pompei and Naples were all very worthy visits. The museums we visited in Naples were so enriching, and once we got used to the grafitti and chaotic traffic there, we enjoyed its unique Italian character. Also, swimming on the quiet side of Capri near the scenic rocks towers on our own separate excursion was very memorable."

This was a very good tour. My wife and I have been to many of these places before, some several times. Ann Long and her specialty guides added a dimension and depth to our previous trips. And the best food of any trip to Italy was at the table of Luigi and Theresa in Sorrento.

An active & educational trip to a historical, artistic & beautiful part of Europe where people are friendly & food is very delicious. I learned & saw a lot & am grateful. My overall rating however is 8/10 due to mainly 3 factors: 1. Some of the hotels & rooms in particular were well below my standards for a vacation 2. In brief, we didn't enjoy it as much as our first RS tour (Greece 2017). Too many places and some less than spectacular, for example Hadrians Villa. As most of treasures weren't there it was hard to imagine and appreciate. In particular, we could have skipped Naples. Instead, we would rather have spent more time on the Amalfi coast. Especially at the end of the trip when we were worn out. The two nights each at Positano and Sorrento weren't enough with day trips to Capri and Amalfi.

Overall it was an excellent tour! The things we saw and the information we learned will last a lifetime. Even though you have a fair amount of free time in each town you were constantly on the move exploring new areas, so when you get back home you felt like you have accomplished something and not layed around by a pool for 13 days. Instead of the best of southern Italy in 13 days it could also be called information overload of southern Italy in 13 days or I gained 10 pounds in southern Italy

This was our first trip with Rick Steve. Overall I thought the tour was very thought out and well done. The towns chosen were ones I wouldn't of gone on my own as it was my first trip to Italy. The tiny town of Viesta and Matera where by far my favorite. The laid back vibes, views, and history were incredible. Our experience was, I would say, superlative in every way: Our tour guide, Ann, the itinerary, the smaller towns with very little time in Rome, the city orientation walks, the local tour guides, the awesome scenery, wonderful meals planned mostly by Ann, the home dinner in Sorrento with Luigi and Theresa, sleeping in the cave room on my birthday, the people on the tour were lovely travel companions and happy and cooperative! And yet another successful tour .... thank you, Steve.

Absolutely a fantastic tour! This was our fourth Rick Steves' tour and probably the best. The itinerary in Italy was great, the tour guide fantastic, and the people on the tour were super.

"My favorite "WOW" moment occurred on the Italian Unification Holiday of June 2nd. We were coming out of a museum in Rome, all of us standing on a balcony and ten Italian Air Force Jets flew by in formation leaving colorful jet trail of the Italian flag. Really impressive. We accused/kidded Ann of queuing up the jets just for us!"

This was a wonderful group of people traveling with an amazing tour guide, Ann Long. Nine people are from the same family and 3 of us are named Cindy! Our days were full of great food, good conversation, new language lessons, history lessons, scenic photography opportunities... oh, and Italian wines, olives and gelato! We learned a lot, walked a lot and covered many miles in our spacious bus, by trains, planes and our feet!

"It's been a month...and besides the jets flying overhead at the Capitoline Museum on 6/2/19, I have to go with the family dinner in Sorrento as my highlight of the trip. Wait! Poppies everywhere! Wait! The view from Anacapri! Wait! The floors that look like quilts and the marble...the veiled Christ in Naples, the Moses, by Michelangelo, the view in Vieste..."

The sights were fantastic. Going to the East coast and seeing what that side of the country looked like was the icing on the cake. The bus and driver were A-One. And our guide was informative, enjoyable, funny in telling a good story, kept us moving as we should, and was a great fit for our diverse group. So happy we had her to help make our Italy trip the best it could be.

"I had a "WOW" every time I turned around. Hard to pick one! The most different thing I can say I did was sleep in a cave. I'm 80 and never thought that would happen in my lifetime. I loved it! I never knew such a place existed, and I am thrilled to have experienced it. My mom was born in Italy, and I felt an attachment to her people by walking the streets, and eating in their home. That was thrilling to be a guest for dinner in a residence' s home!"

Our tour of South Italy was so much more than we expected. Each day held lots of surprises and totally unexpected positive experiences. Our guide, Caterina, accommodated the entire group and made sure we all got the most out of each sight we visited. The bus was comfortable and our driver, Salvatore, did a great job navigating all the crazy traffic and roads, especially along the Amalfi coastline. We had plenty of free time to explore on our own.

"During a free evening in Rome, we visited a restaurant that we had frequented during our first RS tour 12 years ago. We went back to see if the owner/cook who bore a striking resemblance to a family member of ours was still there and she was! We chose this tour after being initially shut out from Greece when they were all booked. We had been of Best of Italy in 2000, but weren't able to get to Naples and see the archeological museum. This was our main reason for taking this tour as we had already been to Paestum, Sorrento and Pompei. I was excited to visit the Adriatic coast as we had not been there before. We were not disappointed as Caterina unfolded the history of this region punctuated with the exclamation points of Matera

This tour far surpassed my extremely high expectations and I'd repeat it in an instant. My first RS Tour was VFR in 2018, and I was instantly in love with Italy. The tour was well-paced, thoroughly organized and Patricia and Sarah outstanding guides and so helpful and we learned so much. It's true the farther south you venture, the more wonderful Italy gets, and Italy sure seems to me to be amazing no matter where one lands...Also perfect tour for my daughter's intro to Italy. This tour was incredible! Every single place we toured felt safe and accessible after our orientations, every hotel we stayed at was clean, comfortable, and friendly, and every restaurant we ate at was delicious. Every tour guide was extremely enjoyable and our bus driver was very kind. I felt very taken care of with my food allergies when we ate, and felt comfortable the whole way through (on the bus, at the hotels, etc). I loved having freedom to explore the cities and interact with locals!!

One was when my mom and I first entered our hotel "cave" room in Matera, realizing these stones have been inhabited by humans for thousands of years... and the other was walking around Pompeii and imagining what the ancient city in its glory really was like (with our third generation expert guide) - running water, clean streets, shaded walkways, etc (advanced public health measures)"

As always, Rick Steve tours don't disappoint. This is a hard tour to plan for a group with a lot to see and a lot of bus time. I wished for more time at some of the stops and there was too much time at some others. Biggest disappointment was the limited amount of Pompeii and that we were able to view. Pompeii deserves more time and/or Herculaneum needs to be included. I don't think the Museo Capodimonte was a worthwhile use of such precious time.

South of Italy had been on a back burner of my Bucket list for decades. I am glad I went now as waiting any longer would be harder. My fitbit read 8 - 12 miles of walking every day. This was our first Rick Steves tour and we have always traveled independently, thus a bit of reluctance and uncertainty towards group travel. It only took one day to rest assured that we made a great choice and now can hardly await our next Rick tour. Great group of fellow travelers and that was a contributing factor to the overall tour.

This was a great group of people to travel with. While most had taken other Rick Steves tours, the few that hadn't were well traveled and readily became believers. While the Positano area is beautiful, it's now too crowded with tourists to really enjoy. You might want to consider finding a less crowded/touristy area with similar views that might also let the TMs experience more of the local culture and not just another tourist site.

We're left with a somewhat surreal sense of 'did we really go to Italy?'. While we loved the itinerary, the short stays probably didn't allow us to soak it all in. We'd take the tour again but opt out of museum visits - which we loved this time around. Instead of the museum visits, if we took the tour a second time, we'd go off on our own. The tour was a great introduction to the region. I'm wondering if one of your My Way tours might provide a more intimate connection to cities and regions.

"The visit to Matera was my "wow" moment. I had studied art history and archeology, but had never heard of Matera. What an amazing place. Of course, today it is beautiful and touristy, but I loved learning about its history and seeing how people actually lived."

Amazing. We came to see Pompeii and saw so much more. Hotels nicer than we usually get for ourselves, all interesting and very well located. Great local guides.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Going down into the sasso in Matera and suddenly being in another world, seemingly thousands of years old. We had never heard of this fascinating place."

The tour was great! The only criticism I would have is that due to the amount of travel time it seemed like we didn't have enough time at the various destinations. We did the Best of Italy 17 day tour last year and I believe that in order to do South Italy justice it needs to be a 17 day tour. Especially since there are no other tours for Southern Italy.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were many "WOW" moments, but we especially enjoyed the home dinner in Sorrento with Teresa and Luigi. Such gracious hosts and a wonderful glimpse of everyday Italia."

The sites, villages/cities and bus routes were everything and more than anticipated. Enjoyed the southern tour because it seemed like we were able to get a little closer to the local culture of southern living. One of my main interest in the trip was architectural, which was amazing, but after a couple of days in Trastevere the local culture became more apparent and interesting. I enjoyed this aspect throughout the rest of the tour.

"On a tour like this, there are many "wow" moments, from our cave hotel, coastal boat ride, walking on streets and floors constructed in BC, unbelievably views, but a very memorable "wow" was the amazing dinner with the Luigi family. It wasn't just the food, but the interaction with the host family. Local culture!"

This was our 5th Rick Steves Tour and it was so outstanding as always & expected and gained more knowledge of history and culture. But it was the most strenuous physically. Lots of walking up and down ancient cities. We could keep up but some people could not. You should make sure potential travelers know this.

"Jewish ghetto in Rome. It was overwhelmIngly sad. I wrote the following. "Shame on Catholic Church From their high perch Did they protect Jews? No, they did not pay dues Of human empathy Or sympathy." Dinner at Luigi's home. Amazing food and glimpse into Italian family life. It was lovely. Concert in Napoli. It was so special to listen to Italian music being played live in an intimate setting! And the private party we hosted in our room with a view in Positano! it was a hoot"

Coming just after the Sicily tour, I thought this might find it hard to measure up that high. Wrong. Just as good in so many ways, just done differently.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"tie for first Hadrian's Villa, so much to imagine, so much effort, so Ozymandiasesque the Veiled Christ – astounding craftsmanship, rivaling the Pieta Matera hotel rooms – no right angles, such upscale rooming in what was so squalid Naples Archeological Museum – a treasure trove of Pompeii"

After years of independent travel, I found that the tour added much depth to what we would learn on our own. The group size was good and the included meals were excellent. The hotels were of higher quality than we usually stayed in.

"Matera. Walking down the stairway into the sasso is a total surprise; like entering into another world. I have talked to others who have traveled extensively in Italy and no one had heard of it."

Having traveled for years without an exacting itinerary, and for the most part without hotel reservations, signing up for a Rick Steves' Tour was a giant leap of faith! A schedule, an itinerary and traveling with other people would be all new & added an uncertainty to the trip. That said, it was different, but the sights and places we wouldn't have seen on our own, not to mention our lively, enthusiastic guide Nina & delightful fellow travelers, made for 2 fantastic weeks in Southern IT!

As with our previous Rick Steves' tours, this one was excellent. Really enjoyed seeing parts of Italy that are atypical on most tourist itineraries. The historical aspects of this tour were especially enjoyable. The group on this tour was terrific! The most friendly and talented group we've traveled with so far. A real joy!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Matera, which was much larger and more complex than anticipated. Also, the independent trip we took to Oplontis on our free day in Sorrento."

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Rome (FCO) and out of Naples (NAP) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Italy. Please note: The train from Naples to Rome takes anywhere from 70 minutes to two hours, so avoid early-morning flights out of Rome.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Italy guidebook.
