Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Italy

We'll gather at our Rome hotel at 4 p.m. for a "Welcome to Italy" group meeting. Afterward, we'll take an evening stroll through the meandering streets of "village" Rome on our way to tonight's trattoria, where we'll get acquainted over dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Rome.

Day 2: Layers of Rome

This morning we'll tour the world's first museums, the Capitoline. Here we'll learn about Rome's golden age through its most treasured sculptures, including the sublime Dying Gaul, the imposing Marcus Aurelius on horseback, and the emblematic She-Wolf suckling Rome's tiny founding brothers, Romulus and Remus. Then we'll take an eye-opening walk along the east bank of the Tiber, where we'll learn about the rich, yet often-overlooked, history of Rome's Jewish Ghetto. The rest of the day is yours to wander through the Roman Colosseum and Forum, enjoy the panoramic city view from atop the nearby Victor Emmanuel Monument, or make a modern-day pilgrimage to St. Peter's Basilica and Vatican City.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Rome.

Day 3: Tivoli and the Gargano Peninsula

We'll leave Rome early, stopping in the nearby hills to learn about the Roman Emperor Hadrian at the ruins of his monumental villa at Tivoli. An enthusiastic traveler and builder, Hadrian's lasting legacy includes his great wall across Britain, the domed Pantheon, and his stylish beard. Then we'll drive up and over the Apennine spine of Italy and on to the shores of the Adriatic Sea. Our destination this evening is the tip of the rugged Gargano Peninsula, one of the most beautiful areas of southern Italy — and still unknown to American travelers. We'll share dinner tonight near our cliffside hotel.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 6 hours. Sleep in Vieste.

Day 4: Vieste and the Adriatic Coast

Vieste's beaches are packed with Italians in mid-summer. But when we arrive, we'll find a peaceful contrast to the hustle and bustle of Rome. We'll take a boat cruise along the craggy Gargano Coast, marveling at the picture-perfect coves, hidden grottos, and unusual rock formations that make this coastline unforgettable. We'll return to Vieste with plenty of time to wander through the town or simply luxuriate on the beach.

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). Boat: 1½ hours. No bus. Sleep in Vieste.

Day 5: Alberobello and Matera

Today we'll head off the tourist path, continuing through Puglia and into the Basilicata region, with a stop to learn about and sample some local wines, meats, and cheeses. In Alberobello, we'll explore cone-shaped, stone trulli houses that are still lived in today. Then we'll drive on to the town of Matera, known for its unique Sassi neighborhoods made up of ancient cave dwellings, where we'll enjoy a delightful dinner together.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Matera.

Day 6: The Wonders of Matera

With the help of a locally grown expert, we'll learn the stories of old and new Matera. We'll begin our day discovering the wonders of the 9,000-year-old Sassi. We'll go inside a Sasso home to gain an appreciation for the cave-dwelling conditions endured by the residents until they were relocated 60 years ago. We'll continue our education with a visit to a rock-hewn church and a look at the new town. You'll have the rest of your day free to wander through the different layers of Matera. This evening, watch — or better yet join — the ritual passeggiata of strolling locals in this authentic, untouristed part of Italy.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Matera.

Day 7: Paestum and the Amalfi Coast

Early this morning we'll drive into the Campania region and tour an organic water buffalo farm that produces the prized local specialty, mozzarella di bufala. We'll go into the barns and learn how this tasty delicacy is made and enjoy a gourmet lunch together featuring (you guessed it) fresh buffalo mozzarella. After lunch, we'll continue on to Paestum to marvel at this site's awe-inspiring lineup of three ancient Greek temples — the best-preserved collection in Europe. Then we'll follow the cliff-clinging seaside road to Salerno, where we'll take a scenic boat ride to our final destination: the Amalfi Coast.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Boat: 1 hour. Sleep on the Amalfi Coast.

Day 8: Free Day on the Amalfi Coast

The day is all yours to enjoy the breathtaking Amalfi Coast. Take a local bus along the twisting roads and wild beauty of the Amalfi highway, hopping off to explore cliffside villages, or take advantage of the sea and take a public boat to the neighboring towns. Check out the sweeping views from Ravello, the candy-striped church in Amalfi town, and the narrow streets and posh shops of Positano, or let gravity pull you down to a beach to relax upon. Tonight will be a great night to find a trattoria with a glorious sunset view.

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No bus. Sleep on the Amalfi Coast.

Day 9: Pompeii and Sorrento

This morning we'll make a short drive to serene Sorrento, stopping for a thoughtful visit to unlucky Pompeii, where, with an ace local guide, we'll get a look at everyday life frozen in time two millennia ago. After free time to explore more of Pompeii on your own and enjoy lunch, we'll continue on to Sorrento, our cliff-hugging home set amongst the lemon groves. This afternoon, we'll take an orientation walk through town on our way to watch the creation of an Italian culinary masterpiece — gelato. The rest of your evening is free to explore more of this spectacular setting.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Sorrento.

Day 10: Serene Sorrento and Capri

Today is all yours. Take a boat ride to Capri, where you can then board a much smaller boat to the deservedly famous Blue Grotto. Or, spend all or part of the day enjoying Capri's remarkable views, winding lanes, fancy summer homes, and lovely gardens. Or, stay in Sorrento and wander through the shop-lined back streets, stopping to savor il dolce far niente — the sweetness of doing nothing. This evening we'll meet for a home-hosted dinner with a local Sorrento family.

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No bus. Sleep in Sorrento.

Day 11: Classy, Gritty Naples

After a morning drive, we'll start the day visiting the most impressive ancient catacombs south of Rome, the Catacombs of San Gennaro. Then we'll meet Naples' grittier side on a Vespa-dodging, laundry-flapping, slice-of-Neapolitan-life walking tour through the memorable Sanita district. After free time for lunch in the city that invented pizza, we'll re-group at our hotel for an orientation of our neighborhood and the rest of the evening is yours to explore more of Naples.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Naples.

Day 12: Exploring More of Naples

We'll begin our morning with a visit to the serene Cappella Sansevero, home to amazingly lifelike sculptures that have to be seen to be believed. We'll continue touring the greatest treasures of Pompeii, brought to Naples' National Archeological Museum for safekeeping. We'll also be dazzled by the Farnese collection, including the largest single sculpture ever recovered from antiquity: the Farnese Bull. This larger-than-life riot of animal, human, and divine struggle was adored and painstakingly restored by Michelangelo. Then, armed with the confidence and Neapolitan street smarts you've learned from your guide, your afternoon is free for making your own discoveries. Tonight, we'll get together for a special dinner to share travel memories and toast new friends. Salute!

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Naples.

Day 13: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Naples' airport by taxi, easily arranged through our hotel. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Grazie e ciao!

I was much impressed by the excellent planning and organization of this tour. Our guide Caterina was incredibly energetic and organized. She took care of all the details that made this a smooth an enjoyable experience throughout. The itinerary was thoughtfully selected. Hotels were central and very pleasant.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Our tour of the Capitoline museum was a top moment for me, with Francesca setting the tone for the whole trip and bringing the collection to life in a way I have not seen in many previous museum tours. The coastal boat trip in Vieste was a close second as an unexpectedly exciting tour of sea caves. The Matera hotel was like a window into a long-past way of living."

The ancient history was brought alive by the quality of guides (Capitoline Museum, Pompeii, Naples' National Archeological Museum). Caterina was absolutely outstanding, constantly focused on her group's needs.

The South of Italy tour was magical. Everything fell in place for a wonderful 2 week adventure. We explored so many new places and learned so much about the history and culture of each area. Our hotels were unique and not cookie-cutter. The wine, cheese, pasta, dolce and pizza were top-notch. We even had a few surprises. Caterina was a fantstic guide as well as all of our local guides in Rome, Matera, and Pompeii. The many relationships Caterina has built with the locals made us feel special.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"So many WOW moments to choose from but my favorite was the boat ride on the Gargano Penisula. The Adriatic coastline with the many grottoes and coves, was breathtaking. We even saw some dolphins. It is such a pristine and non-touristy area and the beauty was awe-inspiring. Blue skies and turquoise sea!!"

This was my first tour experience, and it was a great. We saw and learned so much on this tour! Actually this tour made me want to do more Rick Steve tours. Our guide, Caterina was excellent. She was knowledgeable, fun, and a joy to be around. She was attentive to the needs of the group and always ensuring that we were comfortable and enjoying ourselves.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I read other "wow" moments from RS travelers before I went on the tour and now, I understand why it is so hard to pick one. Although I enjoyed visiting Vieste and seeing the sunrise over the Adriatic Sea and thought the Buffalo Farm, Tenuta Vannulo was a lot of fun, I was intrigued by Matera. It is just so beautiful and unusual, especially at night when it is lit and of course its history. So interested in this town, I ordered the book Christ stopped at Eboli because I wanted to learn more."

Our trip to Southern Italy gave us the opportunity to see and learn about the history of the Roman Empire and this important region, so the area is amazing in and if itself. Add to that an excellent guide like Caterina, knowledgeable local guides, amazing scenery, and fellow travelers who added so much to the journey, and you have a trip that exceeded our very high expectations.

Everything about our tour was outstanding, beginning with our guide, Caterina. She is passionate about her adopted country, knowledgeable about its history, geography and culture, and her buoyant spirit made our tour fun and special in so many ways helping to bond our group into a real community The food and drink were excellent, the hotels clean and comfortable, the pace and rigor very manageable, the local tours led by guides well-versed in the particularities of their town or locale.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were so many: Being guests of a delightful & welcoming Sorrento family who prepared a delicious meal for us; learning about the cave-dwelling Sassi people in Matera and the transformation of that community (and southern Italy in general); the boat ride along the coast of the Gargano peninsula & ducking into its colorful grottos; experiencing the colorful chaos of Naples! Pizza! Pasta! Gelato!"

It was everything that was explained in the itinerary and then some. Our lead guide and the city guides were very knowledgeable and really shared their passion for their region, the art, the food, everything. It was a lot of walking, but we were prepared. I would call it more of an adventure rather than a vacation. It was a lot of learning, busy days (even when we had free time), relaxing bus rides, beautiful country side and coast lines. Awesome!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were so many "wow" moments. It is difficult to choose one. Seeing the historical sites really got to me - in ancient Rome and in Pompeii. Seeing the art work, mosaics, and sculptures of the famous and unfamous in various museums, in the many churches, and the Veiled Christ in Cappella Sansevero, really wowed me, and I am not even what you would call a person interested in art. The coastlines and the towns along them on the Gargano coast and the Amalfi coast - just beautiful!"

Best tour I’ve ever done. The smaller group size made the tour feel less like the herding cattle experience of larger tours. The balance of planned and free time was excellent. I loved the itinerary, starting and finishing in Rome and Naples, visiting lesser-known places along the way. Our guide, Sarah, was exceptional; the weather was great, the tour group convivial. The local experiences – the Vieste boat ride, the buffalo mozzarella dairy, the gelato shop – add so much value to the trip, and the local guides are outstanding. They had just opened a new house/villa in Pompeii to visitors after 15 years of working on it and were able to go through it. Pretty spectacular and pictures do not do it justice. What an experience to walk the streets and visit the homes in this old Roman city."

We have been long term Rick Steves followers we enjoyed his PBS shows, Monday Night travel and his travel books using them extensively in previous years. It was billed as one of the more strenuous tour and it certainly was. It was a good thing it only rained one day because some of the terrain would have been very slippery. That said I did do the lemon walk and the trek to castle St. Elmo for some spectacular views of Napoli. Our group was wonderful. It was nice to have our bags brought to our room and there was wine at the meals. The sites were unique and mind boggling, tour guides as expected where very knowledgeable. Came home happy but tired.

We rate this tour as one of our top vacations ever! Ann is an excellent guide, with intelligent, updated information, always concerned for our safety, and a great "cat herder" keeping us all together, while allowing us to stray a bit when we found something interesting. "So many "wows" packed into this tour, where to start? We were amazed at St. Peters Basilica discovering what the largest church in the world is about and amazed with the art and sculptures. Another was the Gargano Peninsula and the boat ride along the coast while taking the boat into the grottos made for an unexpected surprise, especially since the weather did not allow us to go to the blue grotto on Capri. Many amazing experiences with local expert guides; accommodations were unique experiences, always clean, modest, adequate, sometimes amazing; as expected, physically strenuous at times with uneven terrain, and very warm temperatures.

Very energetic experience of highlights of Southern Italy in unexpected towns one would not necessarily have focused on visiting if not for the tour. An example is the sweet waterfront town of Vieste and also Matera. On the Amalfi Coast Maiori was a surprise visit (little research done before the tour as I trusted the itinerary!) and would have liked to have stayed longer there. An extra day would have allowed more exploration and relaxation enjoying our fantastic beachfront accommodation!.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The visit to Vieste and the lovely boat tour viewing the Eastern coast line of the Adriatic to the swimming beach. Also our included meals were beyond delicious and generous and in very charming settings with lots of ambiance."

The southern Italy tour was excellent. I enjoyed every city we visited and was amazed by the history and beauty of the country. I had never travelled south of Rome prior to this trip. We had an excellent tour guide and the best local guides.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were so many but I especially loved Matera, Pompei and Paestum. Our home dinner in Sorrento with Teresa and Luigi was so fun and learning the history of Matera from our local guide was the best as was Gitano’s tour of Pompei."

After navigating Europe on our own for seven other 2+ week trips, we decided to try our first two RS tours ever back-to-back. An awesome guide (Alfredo) + a fantastic itinerary + our very talented bus driver (Giuseppe) = a trip concentrated on having fun and absorbing history, beautiful art, architecture, and nature. An unexpected bonus was how much we enjoyed the other travelers on our tour and sharing new experiences with them and talking about other European trips we had taken.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Matera and the Amalfi Coast & Sorrento (Ravello in particular) were true wow moments for me. We hired a private driver on our free day and he drove us to Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello. I also was wowed by Francesca’s very informative tour of the Capitoline Museum, our tour of Pompeii and Alfredo’s Napoli (he taught us to say Napoli not Naples, as Naples is in Florida!) Napoli has beautiful architecture and a long fascinating history, and I hope to see it continue to be regenerated."

After the initial required negative test result for COVID, I was able to relax and embrace the tour's itinerary. The South Italy tour included historical places such as Pompeii as well as popular tourist locations like the Amalfi coast, which was the main reason my husband and I chose this tour. I appreciated being able to walk the streets and see for myself what I had previously only read about in books.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Matera: I did not know anything about the city, except that location-wise, it had been used on a couple of well-known movies. Walking from the bus toward our hotel, Matera seemed like any other city of similar size as we walked past bakeries, restaurants, piazza shops, etc. Our guide kept saying, "You guys have no idea..." She led us to an overlook, and ....there before and below our eyes, was an ancient city built into the sides of cliffs, under the newer city. WOW!"

Informative, varied, hitting highlights in each of the cities/areas visited. A sense of family bonding was fostered and encouraged among tour participants. I gained understanding of Italian geography, history, cuisine, culture: a better sense of what life is like today in Italy, as well as knowing more of Italy's past.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"When reflecting on the tour, what left me with the greatest sense of Italian life today was dinner at Luigi and Teresa's comfortable home. (Hope I've correctly remembered names!) Home cooking was delicious, many items home grown, but seeing how an Italian family interacts on a project was heart-warming and eye-opening. Multiple generations, extended family, joined together with warmth and seeming pleasure to serve guests, then washed and dried dishes by hand. I was well fed and felt blessed."

Great tour guides, both leaders and local guides. Hotels were uniformly high quality - comfortable beds, good wifi, good AC. There were several tour members who were not up to the physical challenge of the trip - either they overestimated their abilities or the challenge was not clear to them. All the destinations we're worthwhile, though I thought the Spanish Quarter in Naples was nuts and detracted from the quality of the trip.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Two WOWS: Pompeii was excellent. We had done a self guided tour several years ago but got WAY MORE out of Guitano's explanation of the city. The other WOW was a side trip we took to Ravello when we stayed in Maiori. We thoroughly enjoyed the charm, views and people there"

One great day after another, full of surprising findings, visiting places a lone traveler would never find, experiencing history, culture, local styles, great meals, wonderful vistas. We learned so much, but also had time to enjoy so much. Tour was expertly organized, diverse in activities such that absolutely everyone would have many wow moments that hit their soul. I have been non-stop talking about this since arriving home. Thanks RS folks.

"Just one is, indeed, unfair, but the combination of Pompeii and the follow-up museum in Naples where the artifacts are stored was exceptional and the local guides were spectacularly interesting for all of us. With COVID, heat, masks and pickpockets ever on the mind, I entered Southern Italy with a cautious attitude, leaving a fondness for that area. Our 4th RS tour continued the the expected level of excellence starting with our guide, Lisa. She knew Italy very well, giving info often repeated by local guides, plus she had a great sense of humor, monitored the participant’s needs and adjusted as needed. Some of the better hotels, and excellent local attractions. Well programmed throughout.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Matera for starters. Coming to the edge and peering into the hidden city was majestic as well as sleeping in a cave. Benissimo! Vieste boat ride provided a thrilling look at the coastline and the surprise of sneaking into the caves. Let’s not forget the downpouring rain and flash flood. What a thrilling experience. Pompei, Positano and Sorrento were exceptional. And truthfully, the tour members who were punctual, respectful and great people to be with made the tour truly memorable. A wow tour!"

This was our 4th Rick Steves' tour. It overlapped with our 3rd tour, Venice, Florence, Rome. Our total of both tours was three weeks which turned out to be long for us. We were the oldest people on both tours. At ages 76 and 74 and with some injuries, we discovered that the tours were strenuous for us. We may be too old to pull our suitcases up stairs & streets to get to the bus. However, WE WERE SO GLAD WE DID IT. Our tour guide Beatrice was absolutely wonderful & we loved Jennifer too.

"Pompeii was absolutely wonderful. The local guide told us so much about how advanced the Romans.were with their water systems, roads, sidewalks, & bathing. We wondered why their accomplishments were not carried forward. He said that it is like the Taliban in Afghanistan now. Conquerors come in and destroy progress. We loved the buffalo farm The buffalos eat as much as they want & get massages, They are trained to go to an automatic milking machine. A very good life and great mozzarella."

"We approached this question by asking ourselves, "OK, what place, or what adventure, would we like to re-experience?" There are many, but Matera topped the list. it blends a bit of Cappadocia, a bit of Ronda, a bit of Jerusalem, a bit of Mesa Verda, and, of course, a lot of southern Italy in a special light (a "Cezanne light" if you will) all its own. Our wonderful guide, Sara and our bus driver showed us fascinating South Italy. Our local guides added their knowledge to teach our group about the history, culture and geography of each region. This trip exceeded my expectations and was more than I imagined. The amount of history I learned from our guide Sarah, and all of the local guides was impressive. This was my first time coming to Italy and I am so glad I chose this as the way to do it. I saw more places and experienced more things than I would have doing it alone.

"There are so many, but I think my favorite was seeing and walking in Matera. I did a hike with our guide and we got see the whole Sassie area from afar, it is breathtaking. How old the region is and still very much alive and intact."

Sarah Corfield was an outstanding tour guide. Her communication skills, awareness and attentiveness were excellent. She handled the few challenges that did arise competently and in a very calm manner. The tour itinerary was well planned and provided a wonderful Southern Italy experience. The accommodations were excellent and in line with what is expected in a Rick Steves tour, local, very comfortable but not extravagant. The local guides were excellent, with the exception of Naples.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The "wow" moment for me was the boat ride from Vieste. The water, landscape and serenity wowed me in comparison to the Amalfi coast towns which were great, but crowded. Pompeii was another "wow: experience. Naples was gritty as advertised but the museums and personality of the city had an exciting energy. The concert by Napulitanata was an uplifting surprise."

We had a wonderful time. We saw places we would have never found on our own and the guide, Sara was excellent. The logistics and organization were flawless. The tour was heavy on ruins, monuments, museums, churches and galleries. I feel like I took a graduate course on classical history and art appreciation. The itinerary is very busy-6 cities with 2 nights each and lots of walking which was good for me but perhaps not all.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Among the many highlights, I found myself most moved by the combination of the Pompei tour and the National Archeological Museum in Napoli where many of the artifacts were kept. Seeing how well Roman citizens lived 2000 years and and how advanced they were was eye opening."

The amount of ground covered and the variety of sights experienced would only have been possible if I had been there before and wanted to revisit. There is no way to to see this well rounded portion of Italy without previous experience and not doing the driving was key.

"As hard as this is to pinpoint one thing I would say the Cappella Sansevero in Naples with the Veiled Christ. I was knocked out by the tour of the Opera House in Naples as well. It was a surprise. The tour of the Jewish Ghetto leading up to The Capitoline Museum in Rome was a serious "wow" moment in history."

It was a great tour. Our first international trip since the covid outbreak. The need to test negative in order to get back into the US put a slight damper on the trip, but everyone did their best to stay healthy and it was still great to travel again.

This tour checked all the boxes for history, culture, food, lodging, weather, free time, scheduled time, etc. that I have come to expect from Rick Steves' tours (well, the weather was not in their control!). This was our sixth RS tour and we have two more scheduled this year so that tells you what we think about their tours. We do a lot of walking and exploring on our own and RS tours allows us to do that.

"There were too many "wow" moments as each day got progressively better. I was impressed with Vieste's many grottos on our "wet and exciting" boat ride, visiting and staying in Matera, visiting Alberobello, and the guided tour in Pompeii. We chose to visit Capri in our free time which I'm glad we did. Every day in Italy was a "wow" moment and every direction we turned, wherever we were, was a "wow" moment. I would do it all again!"

Very positive experience, except for the stress of covid testing at both ends of the trip: before the trip started (am I going to get to Italy, take the test, and not be able to take the tour) and the stress at the end of the trip (am I going to be prevented from returning?)

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I would say these are the top things that stand out: 1. The town of Matera - very interesting, almost surreal 2. The hotel in Matera, I really liked that one 3. The home-cooked dinner in Sorrento 4. The lunch at the Buffalo Mozzarella farm 5. The farewell group dinner in Naples. One of the best restaurant meals while on a tour, fantastic."

We are RS alumni 9 times over. This is a great tour with a wide variety of experiences and adventures along with seeing many unique cities and villages. Excellent food with nice Hotels. The many experienced and talented “local guides” really add to the Tour. A RS tour is only as good as the main guide, this Tour was lead by Ann Long, a super star! Go prepared for a wide variety of experiences and conditions…be fit…be healthy! Southern Italy is very different than Northern Italy…enjoy!

"This is always a difficult question/answer…this Tour is no different. This Tour is loaded with “wow” moments…and as always different strokes for different folks! Great local people must be one of my “wow” moments! The boat rides were very memorable. Seeing the water buffalo and the visit to their facility was outstanding. We chose to spend our day off on the Amalfi coast on Capri and didn’t regret a moment over than We’d wished there was a way to spend a night there high up on the Island."

It was outstanding except for the effort to get home. There was considerable anxiety, misery and pain caused by the required neg COVID test to return home. Several failed and could not go home as planned. Rick Steves had done everything they could but this did unfortunately taint the experience

The tour was amazing and exhausting. Towards the end we determined that we wouldn't do another tour like this. The early morning hustle to get to the bus or tour seemed much harder this time. Wearing a mask all the time (we're fans of masks) was also hard. I'd urge a different method other than the day long bus ride to Vieste, or skip the town. We didn't think it worthy of a stop. The other stops were amazing. Ann was wonderful.

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Rome (FCO) and out of Naples (NAP) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Italy. Please note: The train from Naples to Rome takes anywhere from 70 minutes to two hours, so avoid early-morning flights out of Rome.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Italy guidebook.
