Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Italy

We'll gather at our Rome hotel at 4 p.m. for a "Welcome to Italy" group meeting. Afterward, we'll take an evening stroll through the meandering streets of "village" Rome on our way to tonight's trattoria, where we'll get acquainted over dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Rome.

Day 2: Layers of Rome

This morning we'll tour the world's first museums, the Capitoline. Here we'll learn about Rome's golden age through its most treasured sculptures, including the sublime Dying Gaul, the imposing Marcus Aurelius on horseback, and the emblematic She-Wolf suckling Rome's tiny founding brothers, Romulus and Remus. Then we'll take an eye-opening walk along the east bank of the Tiber, where we'll learn about the rich, yet often-overlooked, history of Rome's Jewish Ghetto. The rest of the day is yours to wander through the Roman Colosseum and Forum, enjoy the panoramic city view from atop the nearby Victor Emmanuel Monument, or make a modern-day pilgrimage to St. Peter's Basilica and Vatican City.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Rome.

Day 3: Tivoli and the Gargano Peninsula

We'll leave Rome early, stopping in the nearby hills to learn about the Roman Emperor Hadrian at the ruins of his monumental villa at Tivoli. An enthusiastic traveler and builder, Hadrian's lasting legacy includes his great wall across Britain, the domed Pantheon, and his stylish beard. Then we'll drive up and over the Apennine spine of Italy and on to the shores of the Adriatic Sea. Our destination this evening is the tip of the rugged Gargano Peninsula, one of the most beautiful areas of southern Italy — and still unknown to American travelers. We'll share dinner tonight near our seaside hotel.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 6 hours. Sleep in Vieste.

Day 4: Vieste and the Adriatic Coast

Vieste's beaches are packed with Italians in mid-summer. But when we arrive, we'll find a peaceful contrast to the hustle and bustle of Rome. We'll take a boat cruise along the craggy Gargano Coast, marveling at the picture-perfect coves, hidden grottos, and unusual rock formations that make this coastline unforgettable. We'll return to Vieste with plenty of time to wander through the town or simply luxuriate on the beach.

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). Boat: 1½ hours. No bus. Sleep in Vieste.

Day 5: Alberobello and Matera

Today we'll head south, continuing through Puglia and into the Basilicata region, with a stop for a wine tasting and lunch, where we'll learn about and sample some local vintages, meats, and cheeses. In Alberobello, we'll explore cone-shaped, stone trulli houses that are still lived in today. Then we'll drive on to the town of Matera, known for its unique Sassi neighborhoods made up of ancient cave dwellings.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Matera.

Day 6: The Wonders of Matera

With the help of a locally grown expert, we'll learn the stories of old and new Matera. We'll begin our day discovering the wonders of the 9,000-year-old Sassi. We'll go inside a Sasso home to gain an appreciation for the cave-dwelling conditions endured by the residents until they were relocated 60 years ago. We'll continue our education with a visit to a rock-hewn church and a look at the new town. You'll have the rest of your day free to wander through the different layers of Matera. This evening, watch — or better yet join — the ritual passeggiata of strolling locals in this authentic, untouristed part of Italy.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Matera.

Day 7: Paestum and the Amalfi Coast

Early this morning we'll drive into the Campania region and tour an organic water buffalo farm that produces the prized local specialty, mozzarella di bufala. We'll go into the barns and learn how this tasty delicacy is made and enjoy a gourmet lunch together featuring (you guessed it) fresh buffalo mozzarella. After lunch, we'll continue on to Paestum to marvel at this site's awe-inspiring lineup of three ancient Greek temples — the best-preserved collection in Europe. Then we'll follow the cliff-clinging seaside road to Salerno, where we'll take a scenic boat ride to our final destination: the Amalfi Coast.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Boat: 1 hour. Sleep on the Amalfi Coast.

Day 8: Free Day on the Amalfi Coast

The day is all yours to enjoy the breathtaking Amalfi Coast. Take a local bus along the twisting roads and wild beauty of the Amalfi highway, hopping off to explore cliffside villages, or take advantage of the sea and take a public boat to the neighboring towns. Check out the sweeping views from Ravello, the candy-striped church in Amalfi town, and the narrow streets and posh shops of Positano, or let gravity pull you down to a beach to relax upon. Tonight will be a great night to find a trattoria with a glorious sunset view.

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No bus. Sleep on the Amalfi Coast.

Day 9: Pompeii and Sorrento

This morning we'll make a short drive to serene Sorrento, stopping for a thoughtful visit to unlucky Pompeii, where, with an ace local guide, we'll get a look at everyday life frozen in time two millennia ago. After free time to explore more of Pompeii on your own and enjoy lunch, we'll continue on to Sorrento, our cliff-hugging home set amongst the lemon groves. This afternoon, we'll take an orientation walk through town on our way to watch the creation of an Italian culinary masterpiece — gelato. The rest of your evening is free to explore more of this spectacular setting.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Sorrento.

Day 10: Serene Sorrento and Capri

Today is all yours. Take a boat ride to Capri, where you can then board a much smaller boat to the deservedly famous Blue Grotto. Or, spend all or part of the day enjoying Capri's remarkable views, winding lanes, fancy summer homes, and lovely gardens. Or, stay in Sorrento and wander through the shop-lined back streets, stopping to savor il dolce far niente — the sweetness of doing nothing. This evening we'll meet for a home-hosted dinner with a local Sorrento family.

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No bus. Sleep in Sorrento.

Day 11: Classy, Gritty Naples

After a morning drive, we'll start the day with a Vespa-dodging, laundry-flapping walking tour through the hubbub of Neapolitan life. Afterward, we'll introduce you to a legendary slice of Naples' history: the classic Pizza Napoletana, invented by a Neapolitan pizzaiolo in the late 19th century. Then we’ll re-group at our hotel and set you free for the evening to explore more of Naples on your own.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Naples.

Day 12: Naples' Art Treasures

We'll begin our morning with a visit to the inspiring Cappella Sansevero, home to amazingly lifelike sculptures that have to be seen to be believed. We'll continue touring the greatest treasures of Pompeii, brought to Naples' National Archeological Museum for safekeeping. We'll also be dazzled by the Farnese collection, including the largest single sculpture ever recovered from antiquity: the Farnese Bull. This larger-than-life riot of animal, human, and divine struggle was adored and painstakingly restored by Michelangelo. Then, armed with the confidence and Neapolitan street smarts you've learned from your guide, your afternoon is free for making your own discoveries. Tonight, we'll get together for a special dinner to share travel memories and toast new friends. Salute!

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Naples.

Day 13: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Naples' airport by taxi, easily arranged through our hotel. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Grazie e ciao!

I would describe this trip as spectacular if my friend and traveling companion had not fallen and been hospitalized in Materra

This tour exceeded all my expectations. Our guide, Vanessa, was an absolute treasure - she was a wealth of knowledge, taught us Italian, and went out of her way to make this the vacation of our dreams. All the stops on this tour were worth it and I would not have visited if I was traveling on my own. The food, the travel group 10 out of 10! It was the perfect mix of group activities and free time.

"Our local guide in Rome, Francesca, really set the stage for this tour. Helping us to better understand and appreciate what we will see for the remainder of the tour. I kept coming back to her words as I visited other sites and museums - she really made an impact. But also everyday there was a wow moment on this tour. "

The tour was everything I hoped for. What kept me from rating it as outstanding was that we didn't spend enough time in each city. 3 nights instead of 2 would give people a chance to really experience the area.

"My “wow” moment was visiting Pompeii. It would have been even better if we also had the opportunity to tour Herculaneum, too, since it is better preserved and not as crowded since it is not as famous."

The tour was wonderful. I slipped and fell in the Stassi during the first half of the tour, and spent the rest of the time in the hospital.

"There were so many! The woman who gave us a tour of the first museum in Rome was spectacular. I have been to Italy before, and to other European cities, and she is the best I have ever experienced. I could imagine Rome with its thousands of sculptures painted in lifelike colors. The scale of Hadrian’s villa was a revelation. The size reminded me of Versailles; a full town unto itself. Dancing in the street in Vieste. The Amazing Sassi."

This is the second Rick Steve's Tour of Italy that our family of four has done, back to back Summers. Both trips were amazing and provided an active, informational, and logistically easy (no managing hotel reservations, transportation, tickets and guides). Never disappointed with our accommodations or provided meals. Had wonderful experiences in each city and with each guide. Had a great group on our tour and had many fun adventures, often running into one another during our free time & dinners

This is my second Rick Steve's tour. Our family went to Italy last year (Venice, Florence, and Rome). We had the same guide, Sarah and Francesca led us through Rome again. Both are amazing guides. Our tour group was cool. The people were really engaging with my brother and I, even though we are younger (17 and 16). It was a great experience.

Very much enjoyed traveling with other "intellectually curious" folks of varied ages. If I were to advise someone in the future, I would advise against Southern Italy after early May. Too hot. Happily all hotels were air conditioned, which would be a MUST. Loved the hotels that had pools or beaches at the end of a hot day.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Pompeii blew my mind. I had no idea of the size of that city, nor the extent of what remained intact after 2600 years! Also loved the beach time to swim in the Adriatic Sea. We had a beautiful day for that ride and the swim, and so, wish we could have swam longer. We were given the info on how to do that, by Sarah, our guide, but opted for the private pool and beach at the hotel which was also wonderful!"

"While Vieste was the highlight of the tour, because my grandmother came to the States from Vieste in 1927, I'd say the "Wow!" moment was our stay in Matera! From our accommodations in the "cave hotel" with underground pool, to the sights of Matera itself, it was a breathtaking segment of our tour. "Two of my favorites Vieste for it's quiet beauty and small town feel. Matera for the sheer history and the experience to wonder what life was like for these people. The caves and historical artifacts seen throughout the tour as well as terrific local guides made the trip very special. My overall tour experience was very good. We had an experienced, knowledgable, enthusiastic tour leader from Rome (although sometimes information given was confusing), great local guides, and an itinerary that allowed us to see areas and things we wanted to see. Some places were crowded which distracted some from my enjoyment, but we managed as best we could with the help of our leader and the local guides. I am happy I was on this tour.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were many "wow" moments. Two that immediately come to mind--the tour we had in Rome of the Capitoline Museum with Francesca. She gave an incredible tour unlike any other, that added so much to everything else I saw on the trip. The other that immediately comes to mind is the the archaeology museum in Naples, where we saw many items that were in perfect shape that had been totally covered by the ash from Mt. Vesuvius, as well as original Greek sculptures. "

The trip overall was great, the variety of places we visited was fantastic to see and experience in person. All of the accommodations were great and comfortable. For me the firm beds in all the rooms were a great change from American hotels. Then there was the food and wine...yeah for REAL food. Lastly, our guide was a real "hoot" and MADE the trip a real treat.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were so many cool moments. One wow moment was sharing a baked salt encrusted fresh fish with our guide at a restaurant she recommended. Another was watching a sunset in a restaurant where you could see Mt. Vesuvius across the bay and look back on the town of Serrento as all the colorful houses lite up by the sunset. The trip fill many of my bucket list items with the history and arts on display in the various museums our in full view."

I compare my experience to another recent tour, which I enjoyed (slightly) more. My main reasons: The group felt a little closer on the first tour, the second tour felt a little less organized as regards communications from our leader, and the places visited were notably more crowded. The latter is simply because the places are popular, and I understand that RS avoids these places in summer. If not for the recent comparison, I would rate overall as a 5. Maybe more "wow" moments on the 2nd tour.

"Certainly the Capitoline Museum tour in Rome with local guide Francesca was spectacular: "consider a museum like a library - you cannot possibly read all the books, and you can't see everything." A very close second was a tie between Hadrian's Palace and the cave dwellings in Matera. Close third is Naples Archeological Museum."

This was our first time doing a tour and now I understand why so many people are repeat customers. Our wonderful tour leader Bea handled all the things that might be stressors with independent travel. Everything about the stops was so well planned out. And the local tour guides were really interesting and fun. With a special shout out to Francesca, who changed the way many of us see the items in museums.

This was my first trip to Europe and was surprised to find the amount of graffiti and scooter/Fiat 500 traffic in Rome. Once out of Rome, the trips next two weeks turned out to be beautiful. The weather this time of year in Italy, May 17th - June 1 was absolutely gorgeous. It only rained once while we were inside a museum. The tour was very informative and just what we needed.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Starting the tour in Rome, when entering each of the hotels during the tour was my wow moment. The view from our room in Vieste was amazing being up about 200 feet and a cliff on the right with a full moon, unbelievable. Another wow was the room in Matera with a 20-foot domed ceiling. The Buffalo Mozzarella farm, the streets in Naples, the beach in Sorrento and many more."

Incredible learning adventure of Roman, Greek and modern history. It opened my eyes more fully to the history of mankind through its forays into development of government and religion and finally into the current nation building configuration. We extended our tour on both ends to more fully see what the full region had to offer.

"My wow moment was split between four places - the Capitoline brought Ancient Rome to life for me, priming me for Paestum. This was absolutely stunning - these temples still have a spirit in them, and that prepared me for the third - Pompeii. Favorite "WOW" moment

"Matera was incredible. People have been living in that area for 9,000 years. The 1,500 hand carved caves (Sassi), over the centuries, became homes, then apartments, churches, even palaces. Now some of them are hotels. The hotel we stayed in, Locanda di San Martino, was a good example. My room, I believe, was originally carved out of the hillside. The basement had a spa, with mosaic tiled floors! Yes, there were tourists, but not the overwhelming crush of crowds like at other Italian areas"

The sights that we saw were outstanding but the amount of people in many cities and some of the tour areas was not pleasant to me. I am hard of hearing with hearing aids. For me the tour was very good, but not outstanding as I rated all my previous RS tours. Our tour guide Marianna was fantastic and the group was fun and good company. We saw a lot of amazing sites, but some of the locations were a bit too tourist oriented. The 3 seaside towns we stayed in were charming, but not as captivating as other parts of the tour.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Matera was fascinating and so beautiful. Loved our boat ride in Vieste and getting splashed as we headed for the grottos. I also really enjoyed our home cooked meal with Teresa and her beautiful family, plus the sing-along on our ride home. Also loved the Archeological museum in Naples."

The tour guide (Marianna) was great, not that much the local tour guides. Most of the places visited were really nice, beautiful sea side, breathtaking views and friendly locals. Unfortunately, Rome and Naples are overrated

"The best WOW moment of the trip was the Blue Grotto which was not on the tour but we are thankful we decided to go there. As far as the tour, I would say it was the boat ride in Vieste since it was amazing to be inside them and we got drenched which was memorable."

This was my first experience on a tour. The fellow travelers were all so nice. Our guide Ann was an amazing leader that added great personal experiences to the information that made it fun to digest the vast amounts of knowledge she shared with us. Gaetano (our Pompeii guide) was excellent too. He is very energetic and you can see he loves Pompeii. Francesca (our Rome guide) was every bit as knowledgeable as she is on the show with Rick.

In addition to seeing actual statues and mosaics that were pictured in my Latin textbooks so long ago, I savored the smaller towns where we stayed and the people we met there. Ann, our tour guide was wonderful, and the local guides always selected the more important art, etc, providing real insights to increase our understanding. I will always remember the Vieste pharmacist, who spoke little English, helping me buy bandaids and then leaving his shop to help us buy a sun hat for my husband.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"So many "wow" moments! Vibrant frescos still being unearthed in Pompeii were spectacular. Cone-shaped trulli houses in Alberobello were cute, but the ancient cave houses of the Sassi of Matera were truly amazing. The rock-hewn cave church with its layered frescos was unique. And I'll never forget petting the water buffalo at the mozzarella farm and watching one cow amble over to enjoy the body scrub, smiling as the brushes went over both sides of her head before moving on to her sides. 1st RS/group tour (tho' 30 year fan). Good balance of scheduled & free time; caring & convivial group - no drama queens;/kings. Ann kept us organized & informed; Hotels in great locations; Local guides, especially Francesca (Rome) and Gaetano (Pompeii), did an amazing job of conveying their expertise & passion for the subject & love of their city; Aurelio, our dapper bus driver with a steady, calm hand on the wheel, and impressive quality of the group dining, all made for a wonderful experience.

"The experiences! Viesti: boat & cave tour. Rooms with a View: Viesti balcony over the Adriactic; Matera cave room overlooking the ancient town. Surprising little things felt very special often eliciting an emotional response and/or a cerebral opera aria."

Sarah, our thoughtful and available tour guide, provided many personal insights into the Italian culture. She gave great recommendations for places to eat or visit during our down time. She (and Uncle Rick) treated us to a fun Limoncello Spritz happy hour in Maiori with savoy and sweet pastries. Paola shared her experiences as a student in the Italian school system. Giuseppe skillfully drove our large bus on winding, cliff hugging roads & always greeted us with a welcoming smile.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Francesca, passionately sharing her love of Rome & its living history. The scent of orange blossoms on Vieste’s light & lovely streets with stunning sunrises and our beautiful boat tour that slipped in and out of blue grottoes. The thrill of seeing the Sassi, in Matera, & floating in our hotel’s underground pool. I loved sleeping in the cave room, with the windows opened on the city, trying to imagine the lives and dreams of the people who carved out & inhabited this same space centuries ago."

There were so many items to praise: the sites visited, the enthusiasm, knowledge and care of our main guide, the other guides, the hotels, the meals, the expert driving of the buses, and the wonderful other folks on the tour. "It is too difficult to pick a single "wow" moment since there were multiple ones from every day on the tour. I will narrow it down to four "wow" moments: entering sea grottos by boat in Vieste, the Capitoline and Naples museums, and the meal with the Italian family."

I felt like this was a good overview of Southern Italy. This was our 3rd time to Rome, but we had never been to the Capitoline Museum. Also, when we all got to the hotel in Vieste and we all looked out of our balconies at the Adriatic Sea - that was a wow moment! Southern Italy was a surprise!...especially the east coast from Vieste thru Matera and Paestum. Many times it felt like we were in Greece, Turkey or even the middle east. The trulli houses of Alberobello and the cave dwellings of the Sassi were just magical. All of this juxtaposed against Rome, Amalfi Coast and Naples made for a great blend of WOW!

Francesca made the Capitoline Museum come alive with her heartfelt tellings of the peoples and their accomplishments from millenniums ago where she challenged us to imagine walking the streets of Rome and surrounds from so many centuries ago. This was my second Rick Steves Tour and it did not disappoint. It was a beautiful combination of historical perspective, art appreciation, and natural beauty. We arrived two days early in Rome (my first visit there) which allowed scheduled visits to the Vatican (with a private guide from those recommended in the Italy guide), and the Borghese Museum. Our guide Andrea, had so many personal experiences living in Italy that made us feel like insiders.

"Two "wow" moments- one was the tour of the Capitoline museum with Francesca. The South of Italy tour offered a long-awaited exposure to the stunning vistas and unique archaeology & living environments of Puglia, Basilicata and Campania, along with historical and art history explorations I especially enjoyed. Our traveling companions were friendly and congenial, a nice cross section of mostly-retired Americans. Tour hotels were comfortable and well-situated for exploring both with the group and on our own. October was the perfect time to visit this magnificent region!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The azzure Adriatic seen from Vieste on the Gargano Peninsula, Matera’s sassi caves, & the incredible detail of the marble "veins" in the Veiled Christ in the Sansevero Chapel in Naples come close to being the tour's strongest visuals. But I return over & over to Francesca Caruso's personalized exposition of Roman layers. Guiding us through the Capitoline Museums, she coached us to seek the meaning and significance of ancient (and all) art through studying it in context. Her master class: WOW!"

This tour was outstanding, though more difficult than I expected. Thanks to our wonderful guide, Andrea, I was still able to thoroughly enjoy it. One of the big draws was the inclusion of Pompeii, which did not disappoint!

"There were so many “wow” moments, but probably the biggest was Matera. Opening the door to our room in the Hotel Locanda di San Martino, which was in a cave in the Sassi area, probably elicited the biggest “WOW”, because it was so unexpected. Other “wow” moments were the boat ride from Vieste, on the Adriatic, our visit to the water buffalo dairy, the abandoned Ancient Greek city of Paestum, our tour of Pompeii with Gaetano, Maiori on Tyrrhenian Sea, etc., etc!"

This was my 3rd. Rick Steves tour. I loved all of them but have several suggestions. I have 4 suggestions. 1) Do a better job of use of time; at Hadrian's Villa, we were only given one and a half hours to do the tour. 2) Offer a choice of tours; i.e. museums in Rome and Pompee. 3) Speaks on tours ( museum in Rome and Pompee) Both were boring and rambled on and on. 4) Hearing devices, good idea but when you only hear out of one ear, in noisy areas, the other ear can hear the noise, which makes?

As a single traveler I enjoy the loaded itinerary of sights and activities balanced by free time to further explore on your own format. The peeps from all around the country were of the same mindset and got along well with each other. Being able to explore South Italy in a stress free way was an amazing experience. It is exciting to travel in another country, but it can be difficult. Our guide, Alfredo, who was native to the area, made the trip. He assisted us with a command over the few words we needed to communicate with the locals. He helped us make the most of our free time. This is my first tour of any kind and so there is no comparison to make, but all in all, it was educational, and very well run. I would not do it again, though as 26 people is too large a group for me, and the sheer number of amazing places we went and works of art we saw within such a short span of 13 days, felt like too much content to absorb without enough time to really take in and contemplate what we were seeing. We did have amazing passionate guides..I just needed a more relaxed pace.

I never expected that so much of Pompeii would be so well preserved, that I could walk into a home and admire the frescos that the people who lived in that home gazed at. As well, I never expected to see everyday objects that were used then that looked so much like the baking pans and colander that I would use today. There is one fresco in the museum, and I got chills feeling like I was looking at a photo of a couple who lived in 79 AD."

The Best of Southern Italy was a fantastic tour. It was a great variety, from seeing the touristy seaside towns on the Almalfi Coast to visiting Vieste on the Adriatic. We were able to emerse ourselves in the history as we toured Pompeii as well as enjoy the present day culture of Naples. It was such a bonus that we had well seasoned Rick Steve's travelers in our group. It was just one of those groups where we all enjoyed each others company.

Such a wonderful, well organized experience. Vanessa, our tour guide, made everything seem so seamless and easy. She took great care of all of us! Arranging taxis for those in our group with mobility issues, to having multiple little surprises for us (limoncello spritz, aperol spritz, hosting a happy hour) she was always several steps ahead of us in planning.

It was fine. Nothing more nothing less. Sarah was a good guide, but Vieste we a waste of 2.5 days. For the price it was lacking compared to Best of Portugal. The excursion to the “Buffalo” farm was the worst. Absolute tourist trap and unbearable lunch service with the smell of cow feces in the air. Skimpy service with both lunch and the local guide, I felt like I was the cattle. One could easily do this entire route with a rented car. Naples was a nightmare flying out of. Would not recommend.

Overall another great tour! Our 3rd with RS! We can’t say enough about the quality of the guides, hotels, and experiences; along with a good balance of group and free-time. That said, this trip had a major hiccup with the loss of 7 tour members and our guide, Sarah, to COVID. It was sad and scary to witness the sudden departure of those directly impacted. Our tour was great--until it wasn't. The first half of our tour was a delightful immersion into a foreign culture with educated and experienced guides and exciting and mostly unknown locations. You will be abandoned by the company, despite them saying they do not abandon travelers.

I had a great experience traveling to South Italy. The places we stopped were all unique and have their own charm. Going in September gave opportunities for fewer crowds except of course in Rome and Naples where it is always busy. There was plenty of down time to enjoy the water and beaches or go for a hike. Amazing mix of cities, natural wonders, history and cultural interaction in the 2-week tour of southern Italy. Great mix of free time with scheduled events and meals. It seemed as if everyone on the tour was really enjoying it. The tour was well-organized and I appreciated the places we visited were off the usual tourist path such as Vieste and Matera. The hotels were of the Rick Steves quirky mixed bag variety. Our tour guide Ann was wonderful, knowledgeable after many years of guiding and with a quick wit. Nancy was an excellent asset to our tour as well and I really appreciated the WWII information she shared.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Without doubt, my favorite “wow” moment was having the amazing Francesca as the local guide in Rome for our tour of the Jewish Ghetto and of The Capitoline Museum. Her knowledge and enthusiasm for her city and its history made this a stellar experience. This was my second visit to Rome. Francesca definitely helped me to appreciate Rome far more than I did on my first visit."

This was our 3rd Rick Steve's Tour and did not disappoint. We had so many fun experiences, learned a lot and gained different perspectives. All of our guides were phenomenal. We also had time to ourselves and even enjoyed a day at the beach. Meeting like minded people also contributes to the joy of a trip like this. Visiting big sites like Pompeii as well as lesser visited like the water buffalo farm is something we are so grateful for, and the boat ride along the Amalfi Coast and the grottos.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were so many wow moments we can't pick just one! The boat rides, our cave hotel room, dinner with real Italian family, Pompeii, the sculptures in Naples."

The tour was run very well. Sarah gave good information on the bus. She checked with tour members regularly to see if they needed help with their free time. Sarah encouraged me to engage with locals which elevated my experience. I enjoyed having two nights at each tour stop. It was nice to have the big cities of Rome and Naples at each end of the tour and the small towns in the middle. The small towns were wonderful places with unique experiences that I would never know to visit on my own.

"Eating a family style Italian meal at a local Sorrento couple’s house. The vegetables that were part of the antipasti were amazing. The hike to La Belvedere Mugia Timone for the view of the Sassi in Matera"

Absolutely wonderful tour. Great itinerary and outstanding guide. I took an earlier version of the same tour several years ago and liked it but this version is much improved. Expanded time on the Amalfi coast is perhaps the biggest upgrade. Having two nights in each location makes the trip more enjoyable.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"So many it’s impossible to choose just one. Viewing the Roman Forum from the Capitoline Museum while listening to local guide Francesca’s narration of the meaning of the many monuments around us was very moving. On an entirely different note, views of Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples from Sorrento was another outstanding moment. The Veiled Christ statue in Naples moved me to tears. "

Definitely exceeded expectations! Every city, hotel, dining experience and local site tour was what I had hoped it would be. Our tour guide Sarah Corfield really made the difference between a great tour and a really exceptional one. Her calm and steady demeanor coupled with her fun sense of humor instilled a sense of confidence that all would go to plan. She also provided the right balance of talk and silence on the bus for me. Very knowledgeable too! Did I mention her fun personality?

Favorite "WOW" moment

"So many favorites, but the boat tour of the Amalfi Coast from Salerno to Maiori was hard to beat. Special mention: the very fun Napulitanata private concert."

Fantastic tour! Sarah Corfield was a well informed, kind and gracious guide. The group had great dynamics. Loved the ability to be together for highlighted tours and yet to have individual time.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We arrivied in Matera during an unusual lightening and thunderstorm. I was impressed that Sarah was able to arrange for transportation rather than have participants walked in pouring rain. Once the storm passed, the beauty and history of Matera had an incredible wow factor!"

Amazing thirteen days! We saw and experienced so much history, art, awesome food and delicious wines. Our guide, Sarah, went above and beyond to provide the best tour ever for our group. We had near perfect weather and enjoyed blooming (very fragrant) jasmine in almost every city we visited.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I can't mention just one. There was so much to see and absorb in Pompei! Vieste was a little gem of a town and going into the caves was thrilling. We actually were there when a Rose Wine Festival was happening. Bonus! My Zen moment was on the chairlift in Anacapri. We had a beautiful day, the ride was beautiful and so quiet... except for the birdsong and we had a lovely lunch at the top with magnificent views."

Very well organized and ran on schedule. Packed a great deal in two weeks. Our tour guide Katarina is outstanding and must operate on Red Bull. I have not toured since per covid and since then diagnosed with celiac disease. Needless to say I was quite apprehensive going to the land of pasta. On all meals provided by the tour Katarina was ahead of my needs in every restaurant and at one point grabbed a dish I was severed by mistake. The site guides at different points of interest were all great

Seeing the smaller cities in Italy allowed our group to experience the culture in an intimate way. The larger cities gave us the experience of the "organized chaos" that was characterized by the hustle and bustle of everyday life in a city.

This tour of southern Italy far exceeded our expectations ! We knew the tour would be good because we did Europe through the back door with Rick Steves in 2010. Our guide Caterina was fantastico! She had so much knowledge and experience that she shared with us. She went above and beyond to make sure that we had the best time

It's not just a tour. It's an eye-opening transformational experience that includes education, beautiful scenery, with organized amenities to make travel as smooth an event as possible - such as wonderful hotels, excellent/safe transportation, and regional food to satisfy every palate.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Matera! Immersing ourselves in the culture, vistas, and lifestyle of ancient Greco/Romans (including sleeping in a cave), with it magnificent walking tour and majestic views (day and nighttime!) - It was all overwhelming and astonishing at the same time. And after a full day of walking and dinner, to have the underground spa at our disposal with steam room and swimming/wading pool (all underneath the hotel). The restaurant was great, and our expert guide (Caterina Moore) just capped it all off!"

The South Italy tour was my 4th Rick Steve's tour. It was a good tour but not as many special moments as previous tours. For example, on the Scotland tour, we sampled foods on a picnic, regional music was played on bus, and more history shared on bus. Plan ahead for Capri/Blue Grotto. Francesca, the guide at Capitoline is amazing. Would have liked the name games. Overall, it was good. Bea was professional. Tour got rocky start due to Covid issues. Hotels were perfect. Plan to eat a lot of food!

This tour had been postponed by us since 2020 and was well worth the wait! It exceeded our expectations. Our tour guide Beatrice was wonderful and I would travel with any of the fellow group members again on future tours. There was a nice balance of archeological sites and seaside activitie The only downside was the threat of Covid that hung over the group. Six members did not join the group because they tested positive before we even left Rome. Thankfully the remaining 21 stayed Covid free.

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Rome (FCO) and out of Naples (NAP) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Italy. Please note: The train from Naples to Rome takes anywhere from 70 minutes to two hours, so avoid early-morning flights out of Rome.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Italy guidebook.
