Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Venice

We'll meet at 4 p.m. at our Venice hotel, deeply nestled amidst the canals, bridges, and alleyways of this magical, preserved-in-amber city. After introductions, we'll set off on an orientation walk and then enjoy getting acquainted over a traditional Venetian dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Venice.

Day 2: Historic Venice

Our local guide will join us this morning for a historical walking tour — with a modern Venetian's-eye view — through the backstreets of Venice, ending in St. Mark's Square. Along the way, we'll learn about the city's remarkable past and its challenging future. The afternoon and evening are free to visit the mosaic and marble-filled St. Mark's Basilica, explore the imposing Doge's Palace, take in a church concert, waltz on St. Mark's Square, or pub-crawl your way through this unique city.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Venice.

Day 3: Venice's Accademia Gallery and Lagoon

This morning we'll have our first real brush with the Renaissance — Venetian style — with a tour of the Accademia's treasure trove of great Venetian art, starring Titian, Veronese, Bellini, Tintoretto…and every shade of color imaginable. Then it's all aboard for a cruise into Venice's lagoon on our private boat. We'll visit your guide's favorite island, where you'll have free time to explore and enjoy lunch on your own. After returning, we'll set you free to discover Venice's other famous sights and find dinner on your own in the tangled maze of alleys and trattorias. Tonight, we'll regroup for a classic, romantic gondola ride through Venice's moonlit canals.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Boat: 1 hour. No bus. Sleep in Venice.

Day 4: Wonders of Renaissance Florence

We'll drive straight to Florence this morning and hit the ground walking with a Renaissance tour of the city's historic center. Our first stop will be at the beautiful Franciscan church of Santa Croce to admire the 13th-century frescoes by Giotto and pay our respects at the tombs of some of Italy's greatest minds, including Michelangelo, Machiavelli, and Galileo. Later we'll learn about Brunelleschi's magnificent cathedral dome, Ghiberti's Baptistery doors, and other creations that helped define this world-changing era. Tonight we'll share a hearty Tuscan dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Boat: ½ hour. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Florence.

Day 5: The Backstreets of Florence

A local scholar will join us this morning as we take a walking tour of the backstreets of Florence, with some fascinating peeks into Roman, medieval, and 19th-century Florentine life along the way. After our morning explorations, we'll create today's tasty lunch during a fun and informative cooking class. Your afternoon will be free to see more of the city's museums.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Florence.

Day 6: The Uffizi and David

This morning we'll devote our time to the breathtaking Renaissance art of the Uffizi Gallery — home to the finest collection of Italian paintings anywhere — including works by Leonardo, Botticelli, Michelangelo, and more. After some free time to make your own Florentine discoveries, we'll gather again this evening at the Accademia Gallery to marvel at the power of Michelangelo's rough-hewn Prisoners and his greatest masterpiece, David.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Florence.

Day 7: Wine Tasting, Rome at Night

Today we'll drive into the rolling hills of Umbria, stopping for a wine tasting lunch at a family-run winery. We'll then make a beeline for Rome, where we'll take a neighborhood orientation walk on our way to tonight's dinner together. We'll end our day as any good Roman would — with a stroll through the historic heart of the city, lacing together the classy Piazza Navona, splashy Trevi Fountain, and in the remarkably preserved, 2,000-year-old Pantheon.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Rome.

Day 8: St. Peter's Basilica

This morning a local expert will introduce us to Vatican City, the world’s smallest country, and the greatest church in Christendom: the awe-inspiring St. Peter's Basilica, home to Michelangelo's sublime Pietà. The remainder of your day is free to explore more of the Eternal City on your own, including the nearby Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and more of Rome’s artistic, historic, and cultural heritage (don’t forget to taste some refreshing gelato along the way).

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Rome.

Day 9: Monuments of Ancient Rome

We'll spend our morning uncovering ancient Rome, starting with a tour of St. Peter-in-Chains Church (home to Michelangelo's Moses). Then we'll hear vivid tales as we take a walking tour around the outside of the larger-than-life Colosseum and through the birthplace of ancient Rome: the Forum. You'll be free this afternoon to visit the inside of the Colosseum on your own, wander through the nearby Palatine ruins, or climb to the top of the Victor Emmanuel Monument to enjoy a panoramic city view. Tonight we'll feast together at our farewell dinner, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Salute!

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Rome.

Day 10: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Rome's airports by taxi or train. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Arrivederci!

Outstanding overall trip - packed with sensational artwork / sculpture, ancient Basilica but mixed with fun experiences like cooking school and winery tasting experience. Some of the local tour guides were outstanding with knowledge of fine arts. Florence was my favorite of the cities, but each had super qualities and were quite different all within the same country.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"This was an Italy tour. Venice…Florence…. Rome…3 days in each. For Venice it was the evening gondola ride, where our tour guide personally arranged for us to have an opera singer accompanied by a guitarist. In Florence, we did a cooking class which really brought the group together. On the way to Rome we stopped at a winery and olive oil farmers in Umbria, they fed us, had a wine tasting and gave us a day Out in the Italian countryside.. Got to do a shout out to our tour guide, Lisa."

Marc

Tour: 04/15/24

Overall rating: rating 5 of 5

This was our first tour experience after a fair bit of traveling on our own, and it more than lived up to our expectations. Our guide, Lisa, was fantastic! Everything was well planned and organized. Hotels were nice and well located (Venice was our favorite). We enjoyed the mix of informational guided activities and time to explore on our own. Lisa went out of her way to assist with free time planning, and each recommendation she gave us was spot on (gelato, restaurants, etc.).

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It's cliché, but it's really impossible to pick just one. For true wow "moments" it's probably a tie for me between seeing the Duomo dominating the skyline in Florence for the first time from the bus or walking around a corner and suddenly seeing the Colosseum right in front of us in Rome. For wow "experiences", the cooking class was great fun, getting lost in the back streets of Venice was magical and the vistas from atop Brunelleschi's dome in Florence were amazing."

Annette

Tour: 04/15/24

Overall rating: rating 4 of 5

Strong itinerary, excellent guides, great transportation, good/well-located accommodations, adequate group meals, overwhelming crowds in Rome. We wished for an extra day in Florence. Having well in advance (>60 days) more detailed information about the itinerary (particularly the estimated times group activities would conclude in the morning and start in the evening) would have helped with planning required, time-specific advanced booking for sites like the Vatican Museums and the Colosseum.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Michaelangelo’s David and Botticelli’s Birth of Venus notwithstanding, my favorite “wow” moments happened in things we did in our free time: mosaics in St. Mark’s Basilica, Wave Glass experience in Murano, Santa Maria in Cosmedin (I felt like I was swept back to the 8th century!), St. Zeno’s chapel in Santa Prassede, Bernini sculptures at the Borghese Gallery, mosaic floors many places. We also enjoyed Eating Europe food tours in each city. And were delighted by flying in and out over the Alps."

We had a wonderful time. Our guide Anya was exceptional. However, 2 members of our group had cochlear implants, and the headphone wouldn't work for them. And trying to stand next to the guide and lip read didn't work either. But we all worked hard and it was a great experience. Getting to know all the members of the tour group. This was our first tour experience and our first time in Europe in many years. We started our vacation with a 10 day Venice - Florence - Rome tour and it provided exactly what we were looking for: hotels, tickets, meals, transportation, education, fun and new friends. We liked the balance of time together and time on our own. Our tour guide, Anja, was amazing!

Getting to our hotel in Venice was frustrating and very stressful The vaporettos were on strike until 1, we were misguided by public employees who were telling us to wait at one location then directed us to another location , spent 30 euros on tickets that we never used and the individual who was assisting us repeatedly asked for a tip We ended up walking to the hotel … It would have been a lot simpler to have included in the cost of our tour transportation expense to use the taxis

The tour had a good pace and was well-planned by Rick Steves' group. In particular I liked the balance of structured time with 'free' time. I had a wonderful time on this tour. It was our first Rick Steves tour and our first group tour as I have always done the planning for our previous trips, so it was delightful to have others plan and take that worry off of my plate. Our guide, Lisa, was wonderful and so helpful when we had questions and she had great suggestions for some of our downtime. Our local guides were also rich with knowledge and fun to listen to. Our group was also kind and fun to travel with!

"I think one favorite "wow" moment (there were quite a few to choose from) was when we were on our way to Rome from Florence and stopped at an Agriturismo for lunch and met the owners where they had a beautiful lunch prepared for us that was paired with their wines and we learned about their olive oil. Plus they had puppies and the scenery was just amazing. It was like everything just slowed down for a few hours and we got to soak up a beautiful area and amazing people. "

This tour was such an amazing experience. I wasn't really sure what to expect but it went well beyond anything I could have imagined. Tina is an incredible guide and made everyone feel so welcome and at ease. She was always available to answer questions and assist in any way needed. All the little extra experiences were such a great touch and really added to the experience. I would definitely do another Rick Steve’s tour and have already recommended it to several people.

"The group meals and the little extras. The group meals were so beyond what we expected and more food than I think anyone expected. All of the group meals were so amazing! The tour was exceptional in every way possible. From our tour guide Tina to most of the local guides. They were amazing at giving us local historic info., regional customs and interesting rid bits of the people and the places. I love museums and all things old. From Tina and the local guides I felt so enriched by their knowledge. Most of all I experienced the commitment and true care in what each showed us and shared. It’s the best tour experience I have had. I had an amazing time.

As a 76 year old with bad knees, I wasn’t certain about it. Everything was perfectly paced and I had no physical limitations. Everything was great and I enjoyed everyday.

The tour offered very knowledgeable special guides for specific sites, and scheduled plenty of free time to explore or visit sites of particular interest to individuals.

Loved the insider information/guides in Venice and Florence. Wondered why the Rick Steve's guide wasn't Italian...didn't seem like Anya knew Rome very well-her info about various transportation options after the daily tour activities ended was wrong and could have left us stranded-although we managed fine. The hands on activity was great. The stop at the agri-farm-tour seemed more like a sales event than real information.

The tour guides were both accommodating and flexible with weather conditions and unexpected public transportation issues. The primary tour guide ( Marijan) led us through the city streets with helpful advice and suggestions while also providing background information about what we were seeing . Our situation included an extra guide (Karen) in training whose background as an American expat provided interesting insight between the American and Italian cultures.

Every day was very well planned to make the most of our time in each of the three cities we visited. That is one of my favorite things about these tours is because it takes expertise to make efficient use of our times as well as organize the logistics of tickets and transportation. What a fantastic combination of historic/popular sights in these iconic cities! Our guides, Marijan and Karen were so incredibly knowledgeable and the local guides were amazing art and culture historians, with some sass to boot! We split into groups of about 12 to tour locally which made it better to connect to our surroundings. It was a great combination of scheduled tours and activities along with down time to spend as we pleased. Hotels were good and conveniently located.

"So many...all the art, scupltures, Venice is like being in a fantasy land with the canals, zigzags, buildings. The Duomo, Coliseum & St Peter's Basilica were amazing. Unexpectedly really enjoyed the cooking class, the chef in charge made it so fun with his "Mama Mia's!" and the lovely wine cellar where we ate. The trip to Umbria for wine tasting and the presentation by the owner there was a great diversion. So impressed with our guides in handling a last moment transportation change flawlessly."

Being our first trip to Europe as well as our first tour, it set a very high standard! In the Venice, Florence and Rome in 10 day tour we learned more than what I could have researched prior to a trip on our own. The value is in the knowledge and inside information that our tour guide, Lisa, had as well as the additional local guides she coordinated to walk us through this beautiful country and its history. There is nothing like having no stress on a "holiday" abroad, just showing up to enjoy.

Knowing how Rome was covered in marble at one time and now most has been recycled was intriguing. "

First of all, our tour guide was born to do this. What a perfect fit. Riahne knew so much and was so in love with the culture that she made it exciting for us. Perfect. The venues were all exciting, the food fantastic, and people friendly. Best of all though, was the coffee. OMG how did I ever survive on drip coffee?

Favorite "WOW" moment

Our overall experience was very good. We did not care for our Hotel in Venice, however the hotels in Florence and Rome were great. We did not realize the sheer number of people we encountered thinking late September would be less crowded. We learned a great deal about the renaissance and were exposed to so many famous art works! Our guides were thoughtful well spoken, and full of knowledge.

This was our first Rick Steves tour and overall it was a wonderful experience. Our tour guide Lisa was extremely knowledgeable and led us through Italy with ease, the local city guides phenomenal, food and wine experiences divine and it was so nice to have all the logistics coordinated for us. As seasoned travelers who often arrange everything ourselves, I felt being on a tour was much more relaxing as we were just told where to be and when.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite "wow" moment occurred in the beautiful city of Florence. The local guides really brought the history of the city alive and explained the art we saw in the churches and galleries in a fun, easy-to-understand manner. Before I just liked looking at pretty pictures, but afterwards, I felt much more educated and could appreciate the story and meaning behind each one more in-depth. It was a very pleasant surprise."

Our tour guide Lisa Smith was outstanding in all aspects...rate 12 stars out of 10.The local guides were also outstanding in terms of passion, depth of knowledge, and communication. We had a great group of 28 people who quickly became travel buddies and friends. As a solo traveler, it was nice to share a lunch, dinner, museum tour, etc. with a new travel friend. Each days activities were well planned with allowance for free time. The hotels were central and certainly had their own personality.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Buying a pre-packaged mozzarella and olive sandwich at a rest area which was absolutely delicious...kidding but true. I found Venice to be my "wow" as there was a surprise around every corner. It was great that you could walk about 20 minutes in every direction to see all of the island. Florence was enjoyable with the variety of museums, basilicas, and trattorias. Rome was an experience with all the history, Vatican crowds, and unexpected urban environment (trash, graffiti, etc.)..still enjoyed."

Once in a lifetime trip, beautiful locations, knowledgeable guide, felt very safe and comfortable during the entire trip due to experience of the guide. FERGIE! I’m glad I spent the time and money to go. Negatives were the Venice hotel was NOT good at all and that was the opinion of most I think. The guides were excellent but occasionally spent too much time lecturing. I was surprised that the group was 28 folks which caused some logistical issues, like not enough gondolas.

We had a fantastic trip visiting Venice, Florence and Rome. The tour was the perfect combination of pre-arranged group activities and tours and free time left for exploring on your own. Spending 3 nights in each city allowed us to settle in and gain a true flavor of each location, and provided the opportunity to see the highlights along with some some hidden gems. Local guides helped provide insight, suggestions and great information. I would highly recommend this trip.

"My favorite wow moment was seeing the city of Florence laid out below me after climbing the Duomo. This was a separately booked tour we arranged before our tour. I’m so glad we did; while the 400+ stairs were not easy, the close-up view of the interior and exterior of the dome was worth it! And the panoramic view over the hills surrounding Florence was wonderful. We made sure to visit the museum as well, which enhanced the experience."

At 89, I knew it likely my last scheduled tour of Europe. While I had been on many Road Scholar trips abroad, this is the first time for a Rick Steve’s tour . My plan was to take my daughter and her two teen age daughters to see Italy. I had lived in Europe off and on, and my daughter first visited Venice when she was a teen, like her daughters now. The trip did indeed hit the highlights of tourist attractions in Italy, and did it with two professional and experienced guides.

In addition to the sites included in our tour itinerary, we went to the island of San Giorgio Maggiore and had views of Venice from the bell tower, we went to the Murano glass museum and to the Frari Church during our stay in Venice. In Florence we added a tour of the Pitti Palace and the Boboli Gardens, the Bargello Museum and a Climb of the Duomo to our schedule. The Rome itinerary was pretty packed. We enjoyed the activity level of the tour and the camaraderie of our tour group.

He loved it and will remember it forever."

When To Go & Weather

Italy's three greatest cities are a delight to visit any time of year. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for combining the convenience of peak season with the most pleasant weather. Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements and transfers are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Venice (VCE) and out of Rome (FCO) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Italy.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Italy guidebook.
