Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Italy

Our tour begins in elegant Padua (Padova) — an easy bus ride from Venice's Marco Polo Airport. We'll gather at our hotel at 5 p.m. for a group meeting. Then we'll take a neighborhood orientation walk together and get acquainted with one another over dinner.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Padua.

Day 2: All Day to Discover Padua

We'll hit the ground walking this morning, with a tour of Padua and its colorful market squares and piazzas. Along the way, we'll gape at Giotto's glorious frescoes in the Scrovegni Chapel and Europe's first great anatomy theater. You'll have the rest of the day to marvel at the Renaissance masterpieces in St. Anthony's Basilica, roam through the university's acclaimed Botanical Garden, or relax with a creamy espresso at a sidewalk café.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Padua.

Day 3: Ravenna and Hill Town of Montefalco

We'll drive to nearby Ravenna this morning for a tour of the brilliantly preserved mosaics in the Byzantine San Vitale Basilica and Mausoleum of Galla Placidia. After lunch, we'll climb up into the Umbria region to the untouristed little hill town of Montefalco. The rest of your evening is free for wandering through this rustic stone village.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Montefalco.

Day 4: Assisi and Truffles

This morning we'll take a short drive to St. Francis' hometown of Assisi, where we'll tour the magnificent art-filled basilica. Afterward, we'll take a walk through town and have free time for lunch. We'll spend the late afternoon with a local farmer and his specially trained dog, hunting for one of the area's specialties: the truffle. We'll end our day at a scenic country estate enjoying a delightful farm-to-table dinner together (including the truffles).

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Montefalco.

Day 5: Umbrian Hill Towns

We'll drive through the peacefully green landscape today to explore some back-door hill towns of Umbria. Our first stop will be in Deruta for a pottery-making demonstration at a family workshop. Then we'll head off the beaten path to revel in the traffic-free alleyways, astounding views, and hidden treasures that make village life so special. In the afternoon we'll enjoy a refreshing wine tasting and lunch at a rural, family-owned winery, before finishing our day high atop the nearby hill town of Orvieto.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Orvieto.

Day 6: Orvieto

This morning we'll marvel at Orvieto's dramatic cathedral, including Signorelli's amazing frescoes in the San Brizio Chapel. The rest of the day is then yours and it's market day in Orvieto! You'll have all day to dive into this busy, colorful farmer's market and discover more of Orvieto's friendly charms, including Etruscan art and scenic views.

Walking: light to strenuous (your choice). No bus. Sleep in Orvieto.

Day 7: Heart of Tuscany

We'll meander north into rural Tuscany today, stopping to visit the fascinating Etruscan Museum at Chianciano, where we'll learn about this mysterious pre-Roman civilization. Before we bite into today's lunch, we'll learn how it's made, as our chef gives us a special hands-on Tuscan cooking lesson. Sufficiently fed, we'll end the day at our Tuscan country hotel, where we'll have a light dinner.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in the Tuscan countryside.

Day 8: Tranquil Tuscany

This morning we'll head out to Siena, arguably Tuscany's greatest hill town, for a walking tour and visit to one of the town's proud contrade — 17 neighborhoods that compete for glory in the famous Palio horse races. You'll then have free time to explore Siena's treasures, including the Duomo and Campo, and linger over lunch. We'll enjoy the afternoon back at our country hotel, where you can hike along the farm paths, take pictures, or simply relax by the pool before dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in the Tuscan countryside.

Day 9: Tuscan Hill Towns and Lucca

Today your guide and driver will take us along the less-traveled scenic route through Tuscany, with stops to wander through timeless hill towns with pristine views. Our final destination today is the engaging and prosperous town of Lucca, where, after an orientation, you'll be free to explore and find a local trattoria for dinner.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Lucca.

Day 10: Lovely Lucca and Olive Groves

This morning a local guide will introduce us to Lucca's elegant streets and historic churches, all surrounded by some of Italy's most impressive Renaissance walls. Then we'll head into the countryside to visit a traditional frantoio (olive oil mill), where we'll learn about and sample Italy's famous extra-virgin export and enjoy a farm lunch. The remainder of the day is free back in Lucca to explore more of its layered history, or perhaps take a walk or bike ride atop the walls.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 1 hour. Sleep in Lucca.

Day 11: Carrara's Marble and the Riviera

We'll continue north today, pausing to marvel at the marble with a local expert at Carrara's snow-white quarries, the favorite of Renaissance sculptors. Then we'll take to the sea (weather permitting) and enjoy a scenic boat ride along the Ligurian coast, past the wave-washed harbors and hill-hugging villages of the Cinque Terre. After our boat ride, we'll make our way to our home base for dinner and il dolce far niente (the sweetness of doing nothing).

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Boat: 2 hours. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in or near the Cinque Terre.

Day 12: All Day on the Italian Riviera

You'll take a "vacation from your vacation" today in our Mediterranean getaway. You may choose to hike the cliffside paths, taking in lots of fresh air and panoramic views between Cinque Terre villages. Or pick a village where you can spend your day exploring the stairways and alleyways, sunning yourself on the rocks, or sipping cappuccino and catching up on your journal at an outdoor café.

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No bus. Sleep in or near the Cinque Terre.

Day 13: Modena

Today we'll make our way to Modena, known for fast cars, fine dining, and exquisite aceto balsamico tradizionale (balsamic vinegar). We’ll learn how this luxuriously thick, ambrosial liquid is made and enjoy a tasting, along with other local specialty foods from the Emilia Romagna region. Tonight we'll enjoy an arrivederci dinner together, where we'll share travel memories and toast new friends. Salute!

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Modena.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach the Venice and Bologna airports by train. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Grazie e ciao!

  2. Be on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours, indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.

Our guide Cristina and bus driver Marco, plus the people on our tour group created one of my best Rick Steves tours to date. I loved the experience of visiting the smaller towns.

Our villages of Italy tour was well curated. Our tour leader/guide was top-notch and ever vigilant to make sure that we were properly prepared for each day and that we had solid content to absorb about the sites we were visiting.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite “wow” moment was the lasting friendships and camaraderie that our tour group formed. I thought I was going on a trip to Italy, but I gained lifelong friends instead. Together with our new friends, we explored the history, arts, architecture, material culture, and social history of this extraordinary place. I would not trade our memories for anything in the world. We will definitely be a repeat customer. We are already planning our next trip!"

I can see now the difference between using Rick Steves Guide Books to plan a self guided trip versus going on a Rick Steves Tour. Using guide the books works well, however having everything planned out, hotels, transportation, tours, some wonderful meals and having an experienced, thoughtful and caring guide, Cristina, coordinate everything including fun surprises along the way is well worth the cost of the tour. Because of our wonderful experience, we plan on going on more Rick Steves Tours.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I would have to say of the many "WOW" moments, one in particular stood out. When we got out of our tour bus to get into a smaller bus for the Carrara Marble Quarry tour, Cristina pointed out in the haze, a mountain that resembled the shape of Michelangelo's Pieta and was said to have possibly been his inspiration for the Pieta. I saw the shape in the mountain and for me that was an incredible "WOW" moment. "

The Village Italy trip not only met but exceeded my expectations. I had visited several of these towns that were part of this tour but this revisit provided a deeper and richer experience at each stop along the way. Our guide, Cristina, helped provide historical context and “special treats/surprises” which coalesced our group into a joyful band of happy travelers—and we did sing on the bus … several times! We had an extraordinarily fabulous group of people on this tour.

On the third day, I I got a gastrointestinal infection I had to go to the hospital. I received intervenous antibiotics and four bags of fluid. As a result of the heat and humidity and diarrhea, I dehydrated more than I realized. Our guideRuth was extremely helpful to me. Gorgeous scenery and mostly interesting sites and activities. Especially loved Cinque Terre and Lake Orta. 2 activities were rather weak--a 1.5 hour round-trip drive to an antipasto lunch followed by an olive oil video, and a visit to an art exhibit of painted eggs. 2 hotels were below expectations while 2 exceeded them. Tour guide good at logistics. Local guides knowledgeable and entertaining. Kudos to our exceptional bus driver, Ezzio, who was unfailingly professional, friendly and kind.

We are totally sold on Rick Steve Tours. Our travel experience far excedes what we were expecting. The main reason was our tour guide, Andrea, who was very organized, knowledgeable and a great leader. His passion for the tour was contagious. We got to see more sites and got to know the small cities in that we would not have found on our own in a limited time. The lodging was ideal The bus driver, Marco was excellent in getting us to our destination. Local guides were an added plus

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite wow moment was hard to put into one time. We had many Wow moments. Every time Marco turned the corner on the bus was a WOW moment. Rick Steves Tours with Andrea ! WOW. Wonderful trip with marvelous guide Andrea starting with the awe inspiring Scrovegni chapel and all the great things in Padua. Every day was a new adventure. The group melded well, we had really good meals, and the hotels were very central. Lots of things to do in our free time and Andrea gave us good advice on what to do, where to eat, and where to find the best gelato.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"More than one! Of course, the biggies but also the surprises - the egg museum with the elaborate painted eggs, the parade in Orvieto and getting to go to view the costumes and banners and drums beforehand, and the fun of making our lunch one day. Our tour introduced me to Italy, so ancient and charming, committed to protecting its heritage. Village by village, it was a delight to discover the subtle differences in food and culture between city states, and to experience the music, foods, landscapes, art, and history of the place.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My WOW moments were at the University of Padua. Seeing Galileo's lectern, hand-built by his students in the late 1500s took my breath away. From the same era, the six-tier operating theater built for human dissections at the medical school was amazing. It's one thing to read about the Renaissance, but seeing these relics made me think about the bravery and innovation of the radical thinkers of that era, willing to stand up to the church in order to advance the sciences our culture is founded on."

Another successful RS tour! As our guide, Andrea went above and beyond. At the end of the tour we felt like we were saying goodbye to a friend. The idea of a playlist on the bus, with contributions from the group, was great. Certainly enjoyed the wine throughout the trip! Also must mention all the local guides, each one was unique and kept us entertained.

We’d absolutely do this trip again. The pace was full, each stop left us wanting more—but the design was intentional, and the experience was rich. Somehow, even in motion, we found presence. Patricia’s energy, humor, and storytelling kept morale high and made every day feel personal. There was a quiet quality in how the trip blended culture, connection, and care. Not slow, but meaningful—a beautiful reset that invited us to move through the world a little more awake.

"If I had to choose a single wow moment, it would be the late afternoon truffle hunt followed by the farm-to-table dinner in Umbria. It was a perfect synthesis of earthy adventure and warm hospitality—digging for treasure with a local farmer and his dog, then gathering around a shared table, tasting the day’s efforts. It embodied that rare kind of quality: humble, sensory, and unforgettable. A reminder that the extraordinary often hides in the everyday."

Tour was very well designed, very well led. There was a great deal of variety of sights and things to see/do. We were never overwhelmed by crowds of tourists (in mid-May). Some really outstanding hotels. Remarkable and truly wonderful local guides. The topper was that our group on the tour really got along and were SO nice. The success of tour also is in large part due to our FANTASTIC tour leader, Patricia.

We visited so many wonderful, quaint historic villages, each offering its own flavor of Italian regional culture. Highly recommend this tour.

This was our first Rick Steve's Tour; I was hoping for amazing, and it beyond amazing. The Village Italy tour had a wonderful balance of relaxed countryside and bustling hill towns, modern and rustic hotels, art/architecture and nature's beauty, and boisterous group dinners and quiet times on our own. Our tour guide Ruth was A++! I cannot more highly recommend doing a tour like this for first time in Italy, especially if you love food, wine, countryside, and exploring.

"So many! Loved the beauty of Tuscany at the farm where we went truffle hunting, with the delicious long meal afterwards with our group. Loved the quaintness of Orvieto and the wine-tasting near there...and the draw-dropping first sight of Orvieto's duomo at night, walking through the lovely, quiet streets. And the hiking in Cinque Terre -- all the views are WOW."

We enjoyed our tour immensely. We had an excellent guide, Ruth, and knowledgeable local guides that brought the history, church art, and landscapes of Italy to life. We specifically chose this tour to visit and enjoy some of the smaller towns and villages in Umbria and Tuscany, and we were delighted with the places we visited. The crowds in places like Assisi and Siena did detract from my overall experience, but I am thankful we visited these places. So much history!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I loved Tuscany, especially Castellina in Chianti. The small village we visited for an impromptu wine tasting and food pairing was intimate and fun. I also loved the piazzas and community life found throughout Italy where people gather to enjoy good food, wine, and afternoon spritz. "

Tour was very well organized and timed. Beautiful big bus, plenty of room to have own seat which is very comfortable. This was my first Rick Steves tour, but I know several people who have taken them and highly recommended the tours. No one had taken this particular tour though. The churches, although beautiful, were many and too many. A lot of us got "churched out". I know that you pick the best churches to visit, but perhaps cut it down to every second day and "the best of the best".

I liked Assisi because it showed how a village grew over the centuries and the guide at the Basilica was amazing. This was our first Rick Steve's tour and our first land tour. We have used Rick's books for planning our trips for over 30 years and knew that we like his philosophy about travel and the types of places he recommends for sleeping and eating. The small group is the way to go. And we had the best group of traveling companions imaginable - everyone mixed and got along great. The itinerary, food, and our incredible, brilliant guide Andrea made for an amazing two weeks. Generally very good. But the tour overlapped with a number of holidays which created some impact in areas such as the Cinque Terre which are already overcrowded. We also had a number of people on the tour with coughs including one who subsequently tested for Covid. She wore a mask but usually kept it under her nose. This was our first-ever Rick Steve's tour, AND our first-ever multi-day group bus tour. Overall we enjoyed the tour very much: Our tour leader, Christina, was exceptional, as were many of the local tour guides. "Orvieto and the Chinqua Terre were breathtaking. But the story we will tell most might be the above-and-beyond assistance we got from our tour guide Christina. My wife was struggling with a chest cold, and Christina took a full hour (her lunch break, we think) during a very busy village tour to help us find a local doctor, stay with us to translate during the exam, and then went with us to the pharmacy to fill the Rx. We ended the tour with a good grasp of Italian everything! HIGHLY recommend this tour!!!

"Too many wows to be detailed. The villas we stayed in, the two wine-tasting lessons, the mushroom hunt, the olive farm, the Italian cooking lesson, the fantastic meals, the pottery, alabaster, and Carrrara marble shops, the education about the Palio, the Catholic churches each unique, the amazing walkable hill towns, the Cinque Terre and ease with which we could go to the ports, and savoring gelato at the best places. This tour was fantastic from start to finish! "

Having already taken the Best of Rome and the Best of Sicily tours and visited parts of Puglia on my own, I wanted to explore more of Italy north of Rome, avoiding the big cities, exploring more of the smaller towns. Village Italy fulfilled this wish perfectly. The tour was well-organized. Our guide, Cristina, was wonderful; the local guides were all lively, engaging, and highly informative. Hotels and food good to excellent. The scenery gorgeous. Be prepared for lots of steps and steep climbs.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The scenery to and from villages is gorgeous, exactly what people think of when they think of Italy. Montefalco, Orvieto, and Volterra with their ancient origins and Etruscan artifacts were my favorites. The views from the tops of these towns, especially in the fog, were ethereal and breathtaking. I loved the cooking class, wine tastings. I loved interacting with Italians, who respond so warmly and engagingly if you speak some Italian to them. This was very special; it made my experience richer."

It couldn't be better (except Italian showers universally are too small). Our guide, David, his assistant Lisa and bus driver Etzio were outstanding and immense fun to be with. The itinerary likewise was excellent, the only problem being not able to spend more time in some locations, which would have stretched the tour to over a month. Hotels ranged from good to magnificent, food was universally great, attractions likewise and we were given enough time to enjoy all.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were many: Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, the Galla Placidia in Ravenna, the Orvieto cathedral, the hotel at Lake Orto, wandering through Orvieto (especially the cheese rolling contest), the guide an tour in Siena, and that truffle-hunting dog. And I'm leaving out many more. But above all was the personable, knowledgable, funny and patient guide David, especially the huge and delicious meal he arranged at Mezza Luna and the concert by his band, Bartender, both in his hometown Orvieto."

We were a merry band of travelers with David and Etzio the driver making each day glorious .

Everyday of this tour wowed us as we were able to explore so many villages , many we would have never discovered if it were not for the thoughtful itinerary of this tour. This was our 2nd RS tour and was exactly what we had hoped for: outstanding tour guide, great itinerary, good hotels and just the right balance between time with the group and time on our own. I appreciate going to places we have not previously been to in a group. We can then return on our own to spend greater time in areas of particular interest.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I can’t say that there was one specific moment. The two things that really stood out to us were not part of the tour itself but places recommended to us by our guide which we would not have otherwise known about. I am referring specifically to the Orvieto Underground tour and the old hospital turned into an art gallery and museum next to the duomo in Siena. "

The tour was wonderful. Our guide, Patricia, was an excellent guide and made the tour especially memorable. Patricia consistently went above and beyond to ensure we were all having a wonderful time in Italy. After looking back at my pictures, I can’t believe all the places we went, things we learned, and I know I could never have been able to accomplish everything we did if I had not been on a Rick Steves tour.

Overall experience was great, as expected. The lodgings were all exceptionally beautiful, clean, and conveniently located. Villa Pambuffetti in Montefalco and Hotel Belvedere in Tuscany were both breathtaking in the main house (although I heard a few grumbles from those staying in the "annex" buildings). The considerable walking (5-10 miles per day) and uphill/stairs were (one day I clocked 45 flights of stairs!) a perfect counterpart to my nonstop enjoyment of fine food and wine! -

My partner and I loved the Village Italy tour. We had both been to Rome and Florence on previous trips and this itinerary allowed us to explore the smaller less crowded areas in Northern Italy. We enjoyed the history and of coarse the wonderful wine and food.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Ravenna Mosaics were an incredible sight. Although we arrived on a very rainy day, these mosaics were so beautiful that I was glad we made the stop in Ravenna. This trip was our first guided tour and it was excellent. The guides, the itinerary, the accommodations, our bus driver (Sergio), and food were all outstanding. We have made several trips to Italy and all have been exceptional. On previous trips, we visited a couple of hill towns but this tour focused on hill towns and smaller villages, each with its own unique history, flavors and culture. Each site was amazing and our guide, Andrea, provided over-the-top history, detail and fun facts that captivated our interest. At each site, the same plea was made...can we stay just one day more?

Favorite "WOW" moment

"On each tour, I struggle with this question. There are always more that a few. However, we particularly enjoyed the Etruscan history, a topic on which we had almost no knowledge. Roberto Vecchi (sp?) led us through the Etruscan Museo at Chianciano. His knowledge and dry humor made the morning an A+ university course. Later in Orvieto, we went underground with Francesco Bocelli (archeologist) to see actual remnants of the Etruscan city there. All was an exceptional learning experience."

The village of Italy tour far surpassed any expectations that I had going into this trip. I feel that we got to experience far more in two weeks than we ever would’ve two months on our own in Italy. Our accommodations and group dinners were top-notch and some of them hand selected by our guide to exclusive we were able to stay close to amazing sights and taste local fresh cusine . What really made our Tour unique was our amazing guide Andrea and driver Sergio. What an amazing duo!

"So many wow moments. One was our tour of the mosaics in Ravenna really took my breath away. And our tour of Siena had such rich and intriguing history. We also had a private concert from our tour guide Andrea and his amazing vocal accompanist, this was a special and unexpected treat in his hometown of Orvetio. Our cooking class with Stefano and stay in a villa in Tuscany was my top wow moment. Breathtaking! This was truly heaven on earth. "

This was my 4th trip to Italy, two using Rick Steves' books to navigate, and the first Rick Steves' tour. Andrea is an amazing teacher and guide. I learned so much more about Italian history and culture through his eyes, giving everything we saw and experienced deeper meaning. The local guides also gave their own flavor to the story, sometimes literally during the cooking class, or figuratively as the guide in Lucca who "spit" on the Pisani at every opportunity. City-State is real.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Not one...many. Scrovegni Chapel frescos by Giotto, the stunning 1500 yr. old mosaics of San Vitale in Ravenna, Basilica of St. Francis and learning who the man really was, Andrea and Martina's happy hour concert in an Entruscan basement, my friend and I's walk around Orvieto's walls, the gorgeous view from our room in San Leonino over the Tuscan countryside, and the stunning hike between Levanto to Vernazza in the Cinque Terre. At one point we could see all five villages dotting the coast."

Our first RS Tour met and exceeded our expectations. I loved our time in Montefalco, Orvieto and Lucca, so much history and beauty. Our tour guide Andrea was full of knowledge of art, history and local customs and was a delight the whole trip. We enjoyed the many shared group meals and wonderful food and wines. All local guides provided unique and often funny insights to the local area. We learned so very much about the different villages and how they are often so very different.

" So many WOW moments it is hard to pick just one. Truffle hunting in Trevi Umbria was a fun group hike in the hills with Bruello and his dog. The love between man and dog was obvious and Bruello was so very proud. We then shared the truffles in a group dinner. Then again the private concert and happy hour in Orvieto with Andrea and Martina was a pure delight. Lastly, the Etruscan museum with Roberto was so much fun & gave us so much information about the pre-Roman Etuscan civilization. "

Ruth's soothing and soft spoken British demeaner was a hit with our group! She worked above and beyond to ensure a memorable experience for all. Our group clicked very well, and we were all sad to say good-bye to one another at the conclusion. The frescos, mosaics, history lessons, food, Roman and Etruscan relics were eye-popping! I learned so much and enjoyed the culture. This experience as all travel abroad reminded me of what we have to be grateful for as U.S. citizens.

Also, the anatomy classroom at the University of Padova was astonishing. Seeing the oldest documentation of a handshake preserved on an Etruscan vase was a "wow" moment. From shared family experiences on previous tours, my expectations were high from the start. I wasn't disappointed at all. One and all were great together and respectful.

The tour was rewarding as it included and highlighted the various time periods of Italy from the Etruscans, to Romans, thru the Dark Ages until the spark that ignited the Renaissance spread like a wildfire. The places we visited were fascinating and captivating.

Our group was cohesive, friendly, and considerate. We truly enjoyed the experience of sharing the great Italian culture, food and wine with each other.

Our group was great together. I liked the size of the group, the willingness of everyone to be accepting of one another, and everyone not expecting to be pampered.

"I was so surprised about how much fun cooking together with a knowledge chef could be. Along with that, our meal turned out to be one of my favorite for the entire trip. "

This tour had been recommended to us, by others on a previous RS tour, for the quality of the food and wine. We couldn't agree more, but would also add the outstanding quality of the local guides narrating our visits to mosaic-ceilinged chapels and Etruscan museums, cooking classes and wine vintners, etc. We learned a lot, even in topics we thought we were already pretty knowledgeable about. Our resident guide, Rebecca, was great too as was our patient and impressive driver, Giovanni.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were many, but for me personally I might cite the visit to the Etruscan museum, as after visiting that I was the most inspired to learn more about their culture after the trip."

Exceptionally well organized. Our guide was organized, helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. The local tour guides were phenomenal, particularly Roberto at the Etruscan museum. Each village had very interesting highlights. The two nights spent at each stop was enough to feel rested and not always go, go, go. This was an incredibly interesting and fun tour!

We were part of a very cohesive group on this tour. All of our companions seemed to enjoy being with one another and spending time experiencing new adventures.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Surprisingly, the truffle hunt. We had watched the Rick Steves video showing a truffle hunt, but our truffle hunter and his two dogs were amazingly successful! They found four big truffles and many smaller sizes. The most experienced dog posed for us at the end of the hunt with all of the "catch" with one large truffle in her mouth. Very impressive!"

Our tour guide Cristina was outstanding. She looked after us very well, she had a great sense of humor, she gave us very interesting talks during the bus rides and the walking tours, and she helped to establish a real sense of family among the tour participants. All of the tour participants were very nice and friendly and it was a pleasure getting to know them and spend time with them. Sergio, the bus driver, was excellent and did an amazing job of driving the bus on narrow roads.

I loved this tour! We had a wonderful group of fellow travelers and outstanding guides. The pace of the tour was perfect with a good balance between time on our own and time spent on group activities. Visiting the smaller cities and towns was (to me) so much more enjoyable than navigating large cities.

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements and transfers are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Venice (VCE) and out of either Venice or Bologna (BLQ) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites if you prefer Bologna. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Italy.

The best way to connect from Modena to other major Italian cities is by train. Most travelers will train from Modena to Bologna Centrale station to connect to their destination.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Italy guidebook.
