Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Portugal

We'll gather at our Lisbon hotel at 5 p.m. for a short meeting, followed by an orientation walk through our neighborhood and a "Welcome to Portugal" dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Lisbon.

Day 2: Neighborhoods of Lisbon

This morning we'll take a walking tour through Lisbon's colorful downtown neighborhoods — the Bairro Alto, the Alfama, and the Baixa. Along the way we'll learn about "village" Lisbon's neighborhood life, the poetry of the revered Fernando Pessoa, and Portugal's "Carnation Revolution," which peacefully ended nearly five decades of fascist rule in 1974. You'll have the rest of your afternoon free to visit any of Lisbon's "niche" museums (tile, fado, port wine, and other Portuguese specialties). Tonight we'll regroup and enjoy a soulful fado performance with dinner.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Lisbon.

Day 3: Seafaring Belém and the Gulbenkian

We'll begin our day with a bus tour through Lisbon to its seafaring Belém District, home to many of the city's most historic buildings. Sticking close to the waterfront, we'll learn about Portugal's golden age of exploration at the heroic Monument to the Discoveries, and how faith, money, and a knack for sailing combined to build the dazzling Monastery of Jerónimos. Then we'll take in the view from Edward VII Park before ending at the world-class Gulbenkian Museum, where we'll see how an international oil tycoon assembled a priceless art collection spanning 5,000 years. You'll have the evening free to continue to explore the museum or return to Lisbon for dinner on your own.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 1 hour. Sleep in Lisbon.

Day 4: Historic Évora

Today we'll head east to the laid-back Alentejo countryside and the history-rich university town of Évora. We'll take a walking tour of Évora's preserved-in-whitewash old section, marveling at its Corinthian-columned Roman Temple and its macabre Chapel of Bones. As you'll discover in your free afternoon and evening, Évora has a world-apart feel to it that really connects you with traditional Portugal.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Évora.

Day 5: Olives, Oaks, and Óbidos

This morning begins with a memorable visit to a working farm and estate. We'll have a chance to meet farming locals and taste-test their olive oil. Then we'll wander through their forest of cork oaks, learning how the bark is harvested and how it's being regulated today. We'll cap off our visit with lunch together, including some of the estate's wines. This afternoon we'll follow the sun as we make our way to the medieval walled town of Óbidos. Upon arrival we'll take an orientation walk through the perfectly preserved cobblestone streets and learn why this is known as Portugal's "wedding city."

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Óbidos.

Day 6: Royal Intrigue, Alcobaça, and Nazaré

We'll begin today with a visit to Alcobaça to tour the ornate Baroque-Gothic Cistercian Monastery of Santa Maria, where we'll hear the star-crossed story of King Pedro and his doomed mistress, Inês. Later we'll enjoy some fun in the sun in the old coastal fishing village of Nazaré. Splash in the waters of the Atlantic, sample the local specialty — barnacles — or take the funicular up to the historic Sítio neighborhood to enjoy its sweeping cliff-top views. This evening we'll return to Óbidos for dinner on your own.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Óbidos.

Day 7: Batalha and Fátima

We'll continue our journey north, stopping in Batalha to visit its grand Monastery of Santa María, a symbol of Portuguese pride and its victory (with help from English archers) over Spanish domination 600 years ago. Then we'll visit the nearby pilgrimage site of Fátima — a favorite of Pope John Paul II — where three children shared controversial visions of the Virgin Mary in 1917. This afternoon, our destination is Portugal's historic capital of Coimbra, where we'll end our day with dinner together in the heart of the Old Town.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Coimbra.

Day 8: Classic Coimbra

This morning we'll twist through Coimbra's maze of narrow lanes to its steeped-in-tradition, 700-year-old university. The palatial university library — with 30,000 books from the 18th century — is like nothing you've seen before. After our visit, the afternoon is yours to make your own discoveries in Coimbra. Tonight we'll rendezvous for a performance of Coimbra's unique style of fado…more likely devoted to revolutionary student ideals than lost love.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Coimbra.

Day 9: Douro Wine Country

We'll drive to Portugal's most famous wine-making region today: the lush, green Douro Valley, where we'll visit an old family estate and winery (quinta) with spectacular views of the surrounding valley. It's a perfect chance to learn all about the proud art of making fine port — and taste it too! Later in the afternoon we'll make our way to our hotel, with all evening free to relax and watch the sun set over the Douro River.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in the Douro Valley.

Day 10: Vineyard Views and Porto

Today we'll travel through terraced wine country on our way to the port city of Porto. On arrival in this rustic Portuguese San Francisco, we'll take a panoramic bus tour of Porto's classy neighborhoods, dynamic downtown, and bustling port. After checking in to our hotel, a savvy guide will show us how to explore the city through our taste buds with a sampling of delicious local cuisine, teaching us about history, architecture, and culture along the way. We'll end our day with a relaxing cruise on the Douro River (weather permitting).

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Boat: ¾ hour. Sleep in Porto.

Day 11: Savoring Proud Porto

This morning we'll take a walking tour of Porto's riverfront Ribeira district, including the lavish rooms of its Stock Exchange Palace, the exquisitely gilded Church of São Francisco, and São Bento train station. Then you'll have time to wander on your own through Porto's lively city center — or seek out some more sipping at an old port-wine lodge. This evening we'll enjoy a final dinner together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Saúde!

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Porto.

Day 12: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Your guide will help steer you to Porto's airport, which is an easy metro or taxi ride away. Or you may want to stay for further Portuguese adventures on your own. Adeus!

Itinerary specifics subject to change.

Physical Demands

Our tours are physically active! It's an essential part of the Rick Steves tour experience. On our Heart of Portugal in 12 Days tour — among other things — you'll need to happily…

  1. Carry/roll your luggage over uneven pavement (possibly several blocks) and up stairways to reach your hotel, then up several flights of stairs to reach your room.
  2. Be on your feet, walking and standing, for up to four hours, indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
  3. Sleep with street noise and no (or weak) air conditioning.
  4. After orientation and transportation lessons, be able to navigate towns and cities on your own.

Amazing tour. Fatima was an outstanding tour guide. Her energy, knowledge and love of her country were contagious. She made the tour come to life. The additional tour guides were also fantastic. The buildings, churches, tile, tiled streets were unbelievable. Great group. Food was excellent. The only complaint I had was the Coinbra Riversuites. Too small, bed and pillows were terrible, no chair to sit on in the room, bathroom too small. Awful. Please remove this hotel from this tour.

"The tour was one "wow" moment after another, some was Portugal and some was the guide. I loved the tiles more than I was expecting to. So many, in so many places, and all beautiful and many spectacular, from the tile museum to the Lisbon subway stations each with different tile art to the fronts of churches covered in blue tiles. And the ceramics factory that showed us how the tiles were hand painted. And the cork farm!! Wow. So interesting to see cork farmed. And stomping grapes. And the port!"

We really enjoyed the Heart of Portugal. Our guide, Maria, was outstanding. She was kind, knowledgeable, and had many fun surprises for us that we never expected. There was probably more monasteries and cathedrals than I expected, but at the same time we did have other opportunities to explore both as a group and on our own. We added a trip to Sintra with a private driver before, and a trip to the Algarve after which were both outstanding and I would highly recommend both.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We had an unexpected opportunity to stomp grapes at a winery in Quinta Santa Eufemia in the Douro Valley and it was an incredible experience. I also enjoyed the cork farm with an amazing lunch afterwards, visiting the ceramics factory and gaining a whole new appreciation for all of the labor involved in making and painting the pottery, the fish markets, and the coastal villages."

We loved Portugal. Our tour with Maria was a great introduction for our first visit to this wonderful country. The tour was very well organized, for example getting to sites early to avoid crowds. Maria handled details very well, for example providing metro tickets and helping us explore public transit; also offering little treats unexpectedly during timely moments. The R.S. philosophy and sign-up process effectively encourages a compatible grouping of tour members. A busy but enjoyable tour.

"While it's difficult to pick only one, certainly the first Fado event in Lisbon (facility/decor, food and performance) was a big wow. The entire city of Lisbon was a big hit with us. The location of our central hotel with so much to see and do just outside the entrance, including the wonderful trolleys was a great choice. We loved the history, the architecture, the food & wine, and the people. We also loved the Douro Valley and the town of Evora."

Maria, our guide, was fantastic. She brought Portugal to life. The tour itself was fast-paced with plenty of free time for lingering over coffee and pasteis de nata. Metros, ocean, drinking port: we did it all. I liked the contrast of bigger city Lisbon with the whitewashed houses of Evora. From drinking the sour cherry liquor ginjinha in walled Obidos to visiting a cork farm, the variety made for a fascinating experience.

I really enjoyed the entire tour. I learned a lot about Portugal including its culture, history and government. I would have liked the option of a My Way tour with options for some group activities since the country is relatively easy to navigate and many people speak English. My preference is to spend more time with ordinary people from the country that I am visiting and less time with other Americans. The people in our tour group were all nice as I would expect in a Rick Steves group.

"I think the Douro Valley was my favorite wow moment. It was inspiring to see the carefully crafted terraces and stone work on the steep hillside vineyards created over hundreds of years. Our 11th RS tour. As with previous tours, a very good itinerary was made into an outstanding trip by our guide Fatima and the local guides. Enjoyed how each guide presented the information in interesting/entertaining ways. Have not been disappointed by any of our RS guides, but Fatima has set a new standard of excellence! Was the most walking on cobblestones we have done on any trip (some by our own choice during free time) so the label of "strenuous" was accurate. Enjoyed Portugal a lot!

Fascinated by the beauty of the tile facades on the exterior of many buildings, inside the train station, and inside some cathedrals. I learned so much about Portugal's history and culture from our amazing guide, Fatima, and the wonderful local guides she provided for us. Two really different Fado performances were fascinating."

Heart of Portugal is a very challenging tour but the most rewarding. Both Lisbon and Porto and uphill (or downhill depending on the direction) and may not be easy to walk for some travelers. But, in my opinion, the hilltops offered outstanding views of each city. The food was terrific and our mix of travelers was the best!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite moment was reaching the highest viewpoints of Nazare. On this day, the weather was flawless and I had never tried barnacles. Our guide encouraged everyone to get a small taste, but it wasn't for me. Also, the trip through the vineyards in the Douro Valley was BEAUTIFUL. The local guide made all of us feel as if we were eating lunch in her own home."

This was our first tour ever, and it was a very good first experience. We definitely saw more, did more, and learned more than if we had tried to navigate this on our own, even using the RS guidebook.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The cork farm was very interesting, not something that we could have finagled on our own. But the tours to the ceramics place and the port wine place were also exceptional. The "wow" moment for me, however, was probably Fatima, a religious place (surprisingly). For my partner, it was the Cork farm."

I thought the tour was well paced with enough time in each town/city along the way. There was a good mix of physical activity, the walking, and more sedate times to catch a breath.

The tour was well planned, with rich cultural experiences at every stop. The hotels exceeded our expectations - they were comfortable, convenient, and well appointed. Our original guide got Covid, but he was replaced with two charming, professional women, who exuded love and knowledge of Portugal. We really felt that we got to know Portugal, it's history, customs, foods, exports (cork and Port) and people. Bravo, Rick, for giving us an authentic taste of Portugal!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We loved the cork farm visit and lunch, in the gorgeous Alentejo region of Portugal. We knew nothing about harvesting cork, and Sofia was the perfect guide to the process, start to finish. The lunch was delicious as well. Also, Teresa of St Euphremia Vineyards, explained how port wine is grown and processed as we walked around her farm that has been in her family for generations. The lunch was also delicious, served in a lovely room overlooking the beautiful Duoro Valley."

This tour was at a fast pace that was very rewarding. Both guides, Roberta and Maria, were very good on every part of the tour. The variety was terriffic, from a cork oak forest walk to intense city centers. Overall, the food was very good, with one exception. Our fellow group members were a great bunch to travel and be with. We'd do a Rick Steves tour again!

Tour was well organized, and showed a great smattering of Portugal, making me want to explore more on my own, knowing I can do so without language concern. Once again, superb guides, Roberta and Marie-Jose who filled in at the last moment. I came away very impressed with Portugal, its history, land, and place in the world.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Recinto Megalitico, Cromeleque dos Almendres, an extra sidetrip that Roberta arranged for 8 of us. To see the 95 menhirs, plus one, that are 7000 years old, brings me back to creation. Being able to wander through the site, and touch the stones, I could feel the connectiveness of the earth, running throughout all of the Universe's spirit. This should be included in the tour."

My overall tour experience was outstanding! I hadn't been a tour since I turned 18 years old and went to Europe with a group of other teens from across the U.S. Since then, I have traveled extensively in Europe (on our own) with family and friends. I am amazed at how much I was able to see on this tour of Portugal, the history that I learned, and the experiences of local culture that we had.

Favorite "WOW" moment

Our group of 26 was lucky enough to have Fatima as our guide - there is no better guide on the planet! We learned much, saw this beautiful country and met even more beautiful people thanks to her. There's much more in Portugal to see - this was just a taste (tasty, too!). We made it through a heat wave together with laughs, oohs and aahs. What a wonderful birthday I had in Coimbra, complete with Fado signing. Thank you, Fatima, for showing us your country - until we return, Obrigada!

"Beautiful Portugal is rich with history and Roman ruins that surpass most everywhere, but it's the people that wowed me the most. They are open, warm and quick to smile and share stories. My travel companions and I made new friends at every stop, every cafe, every Uber. Small restaurants in Lisbon, the Avis County cork farm/winery and vineyards in Duoro received us with open arms. Being invited in to see an Obidos tavern owner's renovations and hearing his story was a special wow moment."

Days 1-3 were spectacular! We loved Lisbon (and Sintra, which we recommend visiting before the start of the tour), the food, wine, history, and the Portuguese people. We had a wonderful time on our tour of Portugal; the history, the buildings, the countryside, the food, the music, the Portuguese people, the guide and the fellow travelers were all great.

The trip from start to finish was wonderful! Our guide Fatima was so full of energy and personality and treated everyone as if she was there to personally make sure we had a good time. The places we visited and the people we met were incredible! The weather was perfect and our group were some of the nicest people I have ever met. Everything combined to make a memorable trip!

The tour was fantastic! After two years of travel shut down because of Covid, it was exhilarating to be able to travel with others. Our guide was organized, fun, and caring. The tour group was a cohesive, fun group and Portugal was a wonderful destination!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It's so hard to pinpoint a favorite "wow" moment. While we saw many beautiful castles and cathedrals, visited a cork farm, tasted port wine, tasted incredible food, I think my favorite "wow" moment was in the simple gazing of the views. I have so many pictures in my head of throwing open the hotel windows to gaze out at the beautiful views. For example, I loved looking out my hotel window in Obidos to look at the castle wall at night and then, out at the countryside in the morning. Beautiful!"

Of our three RSteves tours, this group of fellow travelers was the most cohesive. We bonded quickly and it enriched the full experience. Also the most active/strenuous with LOTS of up and down- hills, steps, eat and repeat. It’s good when you wish you could stay a bit longer at each place along the way.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite was our Cork Farm Safari. An immersive educational stroll through a large estate that produces cork, pine nuts, olive oil, wine, and beef cattle. Then a wonderful luncheon prepared by the farm employees, seated in a large but cozy dining room decorated with mounted trophy heads of game. And I had the pleasure of sitting next to Gonçalo, the managing director, at lunch. I get like an his invited guest of honor, and I learned so much!"

This was my 9th Rick Steves tour. All have been quite exceptional, and this one was no exception! Portugal is a lovely country. The tour was well organized, and the guide Claudia was simply fabulous. As has been my previous experience, the group members were so compatible--flexible, friendly, having a team spirit, great senses of humor, and just generally delightful. I think the expectations established by Rick Steves and the climate created by Claudia contributed to this! Thank you, RS!

"Hard to pick just one. Here are a few: the tour of the olive tree farm in Alentejo region, the lunch at the winery and just the Douro Valley in general, the wine throughout, my first taste of a pastel de nata at Manteigaria in Lisbon, and the church at Tomar. Portugal in general is an utter wow! A hilly one at that! Most strenuous tour I have done."

We usually travel independently, but this time we wanted the carefree ease of a tour. Portugal is beautiful! We had so many diverse, enriching experiences. Our warm, engaging leader, Claudia, spoiled us with treats and taught us so much about the proud history and rich culture of her country. Our tourmates were fun! Fast friendships formed during our free-time impromptu social gatherings. We had delicious food and wine, including 2 group dinners that weren't even on the itinerary.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I loved the sunny, warm day when we were the guests of the four-generation Rovisco Garcia family, hiking on the paths of their cork farm to learn all about the production of cork, then enjoying a bountiful home-cooked meal with members of the family seated among us at the tables. We’ll long remember this family’s beautiful property and their warm hospitality. It was a delightful cultural exchange."

I learned so much about the country.

We selected this tour with no real expectations other than exploring new places and experiencing a new culture. This was my 5th Rick Steves tour and I have been happy with all the tours I have gone on. Our tour guide was great and we had nice people in our group. We went to interesting sites. My husband felt that our group was too big, and sometimes it would have been nicer to have had a smaller group. I wish I had spent more time reading the guide book before our trip since I would have gotten more of the tour if I did. I have a feeling that most people do not read the book before the tour.

"It is difficult to pick just one "wow" moment. In Lisbon, I enjoyed walking around the different neighborhoods. The Chapel of Bones in Evora was very interesting and eerie. The farm we visited where they grow cork trees was fascinating. Obidos and Nazare were very pretty. I found mass at Fatima to be moving. The monasteries in Belem and Batalha were great too. The farm in the Douro Valley was beautiful with the grape vines were turning color. No I can't pick just one "wow" moment."

Once again, the guide made it an exceptional trip. My one criticism would be that the guide did not talk about the difference between the qualities of the cork products we would see for sale. This was something I learned slowly by myself. I would really have liked to have had this knowledge by the time we started seeing cork products for sale.

This trip was our 6th RS Tour and we were not disappointed. Our guide Cristina and driver, Helder were such fun and really made the trip that much more enjoyable. And of course we cannot forget to mention the other tour members. Everyone was so nice. We really enjoyed travelling with them all. The food was of course amazing and the Pastel de Nata - well, were heavenly. Cristina made sure we tried several tasty treats during our visit. The tour was a great look at this part of Portugal.

I loved this tour experience. Susanna was outstanding and so good at getting all of us where we were supposed to be when we were supposed to be there. She is so knowledgeable and was complemented by all of the local guides who were all outstanding as well. The experience was made better by our travel partners. We learned together, got wet together, laughed a lot together, did laundry together and got to know each other in those 12 days we shared in Portugal.

"This is a difficult question to answer. Almost every time we got off the bus was a "wow" moment. The monasteries, the tile art, the cork farm, the Monument of the Discoveries, walled towns of Evora and Obidos, the sea town of Nazare, the Douro Valley and our time at the wine and olive farm and Porto. Portugal's art and history is a "wow" moment."

I had a wonderful time. I loved that all the organizational details were taken care of and that our tour included several events that had I been a tourist on my own I would not have even thought to do, e.g. the 2 Fado performances, the visit to the cork farm, and the food tour to mention just a few. From Susanna to the several local guides we had, I sensed a love for the town/city/country as well as a deep knowledge of the local history.

Definitely outstanding! I loved Portugal and can't wait to go back. The hotels were for the most part, 5* and the only one that wasn't was like the provided hotels when I first began traveling with ETTBD; clean and tidy, centrally located and with an excellent and friendly staff, in short well beyond "fine"! The provided group meals were also impressive. What made this tour particularly special was the quality and number of experiential experiences.

"As mentioned above, the particular experiences on this tour-the cork farm, the family quinta; the overall beauty and magnificence of the University library at Coimbra; comparing the two different types of Fado (Lisbon I think? and Coimbra) we were privileged to hear; the extraordinary food tour in Porto."

The history and culture you are exposed to on this tour is very interesting. Of the twelve previous RS tours, this one was among the most strenuous because of the steep hills in several of the cities. Claudia, our tour guide, was FANTASTIC! If she didn't already have a mother, I would adopt her. This was my first Rick Steves tour and at age 71 I was apprehensive about handling my own luggage. This was my fourth RS tour. Each tour was unique and fabulous in their own way. This tour exceeded my expectations for a few reasons. First, the hotels were SO nice - exactly the sort of hotel I would pick to stay in. Second, Rafael was charming, funny, and had an encyclopedic knowledge of all things Portugal. I could not have asked for a better guide. There are not enough superlatives to describe his competencies as a tour guide. Hang on to this guy - he's a gem and a wonderful ambassador.

Rafael is the best guide I have ever encountered. He went way above and beyond his required duties. His inclusion of many of the optional tours really added to the overall experience. We were also very pleased with the hotels and are happy to see Rick has upgraded the accommodations.

This was our fourth Rick Steves tour and-as usual-it did not disappoint! I took my 90 year old mom and she and I had a great time. This is our third Rick Stve's tour and this was the best one. First of all our group was great. Even though i had a system to carry our bags and hold onto my mom's arm..... my bags were wrestled away. In addition the most was made of our group time when we were in the cities and looking at churches, museums etc.

Our guide, Fatima, made this tour very special. I didn't have special expectations of this tour, going only because our close friends were going. It turned out to e a very memorable trip.

Portugal was my 14th Euro country visited and my 5th RS Tour.I don't know how we could have packed more value added and varied experiences in 12 days than we did on this sojourn. And the glue that held it all together and made it more enriching was our incomparable leader Fatima, so proud of her country and heritage and thankful to us for taking the time to explore it with her. We all fell in love with her. On my own I visited the beautiful Queluz Palace. It should be in Rick's tour book!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Many WOW moments but a few stand out. The wine grape crushing to music in the Douro Valley. The beautiful and moving Mass at Fatima. Everything about the walled medieval town of Obidos...the gorgeous sunrise at the castle ruins, the amazing bakery, our lodging with warrior artifacts and decor and topped off by Fatima's surprise dinner party with music on the patio. An amazing lunch feast in Coimbra hosted by the brothers that was as local and non-touristy as you could imagine."

My experience was outstanding! Let's start with Fatima! This was our 16th trip and she was truly fabulous, knowledgeable and passionate about her country! So many "wow" moments! We knew nothing about Portugal and we were fascinated with the country, it's traditions and of course the food and wine! She needs a raise!! There was nothing Fatima wouldn't do for us and she willingly shared her "off time" with all of us. She even very nicely helped us with our final four days!

This tour turned out to be much better than I had anticipated - kinda between VG and Outstanding. It opened my eyes to this little corner of Europe. Since it is a rather compact country little time is wasted on long bus rides while still offering wide diversity of terrain. The Douro Valley is really a hidden gem. The hotels were excellent - much better than typical RS hotels. The Gulbenkian Museum was excellent. Rovisco Garcia cork farm v enjoyable with excellent hosts who made us feel v welcom

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Many excellent sights and experiences along the way, but, of course, the most memorable has to be the visit to the Quinta Santa Eufehia vineyards and the "Grape Stomping" in the beautiful Douro Valley."

Fatima was an excellent guide and the tour was a wonderful introduction to a heretofore neglected but very interesting country. We visited Spain on our own afterwards and it was amazing how much more we got out of our travels because of what we had learned in Portugal.

The country was far more interesting than expected; the tour itself was more professionally conducted & thoroughly enjoyable than any of our four previous RST tours.

"Actually, our guide (Fatima) from start to finish was the standout; she kept surpassing a previous memorable event or stop with even more stupendous experiences. Her depth of knowledge of Portugal added to our edification. My wife & I came home knowing much more about the people & the place, which is why we travel."

This was one of the best Rick Steve's tours we have ever taken. Different than traveling to countries where we have some familiarity, Portugal was entirely unknown territory. Every day we said it just can't keep getting better, and it did! We learned so much about the culture, history, landscape. Definitely set us up to return sometime in the near future. We would highly recommend this tour!

"We were very fortunate to be touring Fatima on a Sunday when Mass was being celebrated. It was very moving to see the thousands of people gathered in the square, all coming together as a community."

Absolutely loved Portugal. Fatima's passion and love for her country made this, our 12th Rick Steves tour, our best ever. Every day brought unexpected beauty, wonderful food and wines, and a great appreciation for the hardworking Portuguese people. It was fascinating to learn that today's Portugal is only 45 years old, yet they have centuries of intriguing history, architectural wonders and world wanderlust.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Fátima was my daily "wow" moment. Visiting Belem, Fatima showed us all of the islands and countries the Portuguese navy and merchant ships discovered on a tiled world map on the ground. Truly amazing. Stomping grapes at the Eufemia winery was an unexpected highlight, as was the cork farm visit and witnessing the procession in Fatima."

This was our second Rick Steve's tour and was as outstanding as the first. Our first tour was 16 years ago, the 21 day tour of Europe. The hotel choices this trip through Portugal were outstanding. The hotel on the Douro river was beautiful and all the restaurant choices were also beyond wonderful. I must say though that our guide Susanna is the person who made the trip so very special. She was so knowledgeable, caring and extremely organized. She is a very special person and guide.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We were in a he Douro valley during harvest so about a dozen of us got to do grape stomping with accordion must being played which was a total hoot! Also the cork farm was fantastic with a very welcoming family and a great lunch."

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements and transfers are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Lisbon (LIS) and out of Porto (OPO) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Portugal.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Portugal guidebook.
