Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Portugal

We'll gather at our Lisbon hotel at 4 p.m. for a short meeting, followed by an orientation walk through our neighborhood and a "Welcome to Portugal" dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Lisbon.

Day 2: Neighborhoods of Lisbon

This morning we'll take a walking tour through Lisbon's colorful downtown neighborhoods — the Bairro Alto, the Alfama, and the Baixa. Along the way we'll learn about "village" Lisbon's neighborhood life, the poetry of the revered Fernando Pessoa, and Portugal's "Carnation Revolution," which peacefully ended nearly five decades of fascist rule in 1974. You'll have the rest of your afternoon free to visit any of Lisbon's "niche" museums (tile, fado, port wine, and other Portuguese specialties). Tonight we'll regroup and enjoy a soulful fado performance with dinner.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Lisbon.

Day 3: Seafaring Belém and the Gulbenkian

We'll begin our day with a bus tour through Lisbon to its seafaring Belém District, home to many of the city's most historic buildings. Sticking close to the waterfront, we'll learn about Portugal's golden age of exploration at the heroic Monument to the Discoveries, and how faith, money, and a knack for sailing combined to build the dazzling Monastery of Jerónimos. Then we'll take in the view from Edward VII Park before ending at the world-class Gulbenkian Museum, where we'll see how an international oil tycoon assembled a priceless art collection spanning 5,000 years. You'll have the evening free to continue to explore the museum or return to Lisbon for dinner on your own.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 1 hour. Sleep in Lisbon.

Day 4: Historic Évora

Today we'll head east to the laid-back Alentejo countryside and the history-rich university town of Évora. We'll take a walking tour of Évora's preserved-in-whitewash old section, marveling at its Corinthian-columned Roman Temple and its macabre Chapel of Bones. As you'll discover in your free afternoon and evening, Évora has a world-apart feel to it that really connects you with traditional Portugal.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Évora.

Day 5: Olives, Oaks, and Óbidos

This morning begins with a memorable visit to a working farm and estate. We'll have a chance to meet farming locals and taste-test their olive oil. Then we'll wander through their forest of cork oaks, learning how the bark is harvested and how it's being regulated today. We'll cap off our visit with lunch together, including some of the estate's wines. This afternoon we'll follow the sun as we make our way to the medieval walled town of Óbidos. Upon arrival we'll take an orientation walk through the perfectly preserved cobblestone streets and learn why this is known as Portugal's "wedding city."

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Óbidos.

Day 6: Royal Intrigue, Alcobaça, and Nazaré

We'll begin today with a visit to Alcobaça to tour the ornate Baroque-Gothic Cistercian Monastery of Santa Maria, where we'll hear the star-crossed story of King Pedro and his doomed mistress, Inês. Later we'll enjoy some fun in the sun in the old coastal fishing village of Nazaré. Splash in the waters of the Atlantic, sample the local specialty — barnacles — or take the funicular up to the historic Sítio neighborhood to enjoy its sweeping cliff-top views. This evening we'll return to Óbidos for dinner on your own.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Óbidos.

Day 7: Batalha and Fátima

We'll continue our journey north, stopping in Batalha to visit its grand Monastery of Santa María, a symbol of Portuguese pride and its victory (with help from English archers) over Spanish domination 600 years ago. Then we'll visit the nearby pilgrimage site of Fátima — a favorite of Pope John Paul II — where three children shared controversial visions of the Virgin Mary in 1917. This afternoon, our destination is Portugal's historic capital of Coimbra, where we'll end our day with dinner together in the heart of the Old Town.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Coimbra.

Day 8: Classic Coimbra

This morning we'll twist through Coimbra's maze of narrow lanes to its steeped-in-tradition, 700-year-old university. The palatial university library — with 30,000 books from the 18th century — is like nothing you've seen before. After our visit, the afternoon is yours to make your own discoveries in Coimbra. Tonight we'll rendezvous for a performance of Coimbra's unique style of fado…more likely devoted to revolutionary student ideals than lost love.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Coimbra.

Day 9: Douro Wine Country

We'll drive to Portugal's most famous wine-making region today: the lush, green Douro Valley, where we'll visit an old family estate and winery (quinta) with spectacular views of the surrounding valley. It's a perfect chance to learn all about the proud art of making fine port — and taste it too! Later in the afternoon we'll make our way to our hotel, with all evening free to relax and savor the sunset.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in the Douro Valley.

Day 10: Vineyard Views and Porto

Today we'll travel through terraced wine country on our way to the port city of Porto. On arrival in this rustic Portuguese San Francisco, a savvy guide will show us how to explore the city through our taste buds with a sampling of delicious local cuisine, teaching us about history, architecture, and culture along the way. We'll end our day with a relaxing cruise on the Douro River (weather permitting).

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Boat: ¾ hour. Sleep in Porto.

Day 11: Savoring Proud Porto

This morning we'll take a walking tour of Porto's riverfront Ribeira district, including the lavish rooms of its Stock Exchange Palace, the exquisitely gilded Church of São Francisco, and São Bento train station. Then you'll have time to wander on your own through Porto's lively city center — or seek out some more sipping at an old port-wine lodge. This evening we'll enjoy a final dinner together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Saúde!

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Porto.

Day 12: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Your guide will help steer you to Porto's airport, which is an easy metro or taxi ride away. Or you may want to stay for further Portuguese adventures on your own. Adeus!

I had a fantastic time on this tour. Every part of the trip was a pleasure, even the bus trips. Fatima was an outstanding tour leader! She made all parts of the trip interesting and educational.

One paragraph: the company knows the tourists’ needs very well. Many thanks to Mr. Rick Steves.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"1. Wonderful tour guide with a big heart and professionalism. Please pass our big five to Ms. Fátima. She is just great - one of best we ever have had on our many tours. 2. Unexpected many lunch and dinners with good wines. 3. No optional tour with additional fee. 4. No cost to local guide, even driver and the tour guide. 5. Friendly and nice 28 travel companions. Another pleasure."

I really liked and appreciated Fatima our tour guide as well as the local tour guides. The Portuguese people as a whole are warm, friendly and family oriented. Too much of the trip focused on Cathedrals, churches and monasteries for my taste and the accommodations were generally so so. The food was also so so generally speaking. The highlights were our visits to the winery, the ceramics factory, the local markets - I.e., interactions with the ‘everyday people’.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Surprisingly Fatima. There were relatively few people there when we visited but I experienced powerful and peaceful energy at the site and lighting memorial candles was a very positive experience."

We were surprised by the slower pace of this tour (it was our third), which did not jive with what we were looking for. Previous tours had more of a mix of ages, with more younger and middle aged folks, while this particular tour skewed quite a bit older. While everyone was lovely, and I hope I am in as good shape when I'm 80, I do wish we were able to cover ground a bit more quickly. I am not sure if this was to accommodate everyone's pace, or if this particular tour was just a bit slower.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I was very pleasantly surprised by the Douro Valley (and this is coming from someone with very little interest in wine; I just never acquired a taste for it) - this was definitely the "vacation within the vacation" part of the trip. The hotel pool alone, overlooking the vineyards, was glorious. The town of Lamego was lovely - and it wasn't event in the guidebook!"

"Many wow moments. Especially enjoyed the tour of the cork farm- their “lead by example” lessons in sustainability were timely and refreshing. Also enjoyed the Douro Valley and Quinta visit. The add-on visit to a ceramics factory and Roman ruins outside Coimbro were especially interesting and should be added for every group traveling this itinary. Rafael really brought history to life for us at each stop along the way and his philosophical discussions on the bus made our travel time go fast."

We loved our Portugal experience. Our tour leader was excellent, providing historical and cultural background throughout the trip (and cookies). The balance between group activities and free time allowed us to quickly get comfortable in each new stop, then explore more deeply what we were interested in. The food and accommodations were more than we expected. The size of the group made traveling comfortable and allowed for everyone to get to know each other easily.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The visit to the cork farm stood out because it not only provided an outstanding opportunity to learn about the methods of growing and harvesting the cork, but we learned so much about how real people were impacted by the political decisions within Portugal. We had the privilege of sitting with Goncalo at our lunch, and his political and business insights were fascinating. Getting the opportunity to meet people at that level is an amazing opportunity not provided by most tours."

This was my first Rick Steves tour. It far exceeded my expectations. It was well organized and provided a good balance between group touring and free time, providing us with confidence to explore on our own.. Highlights included tours of a cork farm, winery, and ceramics factory - all places that we couldn't have experienced on our own, and a Fado performance. Todd's preparation and education materials gave us a deep understanding of many cultural and historical aspects of Portugal.

Favorite "WOW" moment

We had never been on a tour this long, or with so many people, and had reservations about that. We shouldn't have worried, the time flew by, and we enjoyed the others on the tour. Portugal was new to us. We wanted to be challenged by a new country and culture. We speak enough German to get by easily in Germany, but having no Portuguese was not a problem. The people are friendly and helpful, so the 2 times someone didn't speak English it was a pleasant experience.

It was a great tour. Portugal had a lot to offer and as always (this was our 6th Rick Steves tour) our guide was outstanding and we got to know Portugal and its people and customs through her excitement and enthusiasm for her native country. As a friend of mine said, if you don't learn something on a RS trip, you're not paying attention. I would add to that comment that if you don't have an incredible adventure that includes the land, the food, the people, the history, amazing guides and the sense that you can go anywhere, then you're probably not on a Rick Steves Trip. Fatima was warm, funny, smart, engaging and so caring. What a great tour guide!.

The tour provided a richer experience than I would have had traveling on my own. My tour leader was compassionate, warm, funny and added to the group cohesion, but there were a few issues which I will share in another answer. The highlights of the tour were Lisbon, Douro Valley and Porto. I particularly enjoyed the visit to the cork farm. I went to Sintra on my own which was wonderful. I would have skipped Evora and Obidos was beautiful, but there wasn't much to do there.

This was our 5th RS tour and they keep getting better. The tour was a great combination of history, food, wine, and culture. The tour was fast paced but we still had time to explore on our own. We had a great group of tour participants and we really enjoyed each other’s company. Finally, our guide, Fátima, was excellent. She was passionate, knowledgeable, and was a great representative for the people of Portugal.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were a few. The Douro valley was beautiful and the visit to the winery was fascinating, ending with a great meal. The cork farm was also enlightening. Fatima loves her country and its history. She presented Portugal through four generations in her family from her grandmother to her daughters. I learned so much about the transitions that have taken place in Portugal during the last 50 years. The tour was busy but there was some part of every day that you could do at your own pace. The travelers were kind and worked together as a team daily. Every meal and experience was wonderful. Fatima is a real gem. We loved meeting Rick Steves.

We had the best tour guide - Cristina. She has years of experience, loves her country and covered every detail from "passport checks" to keeping everyone on time. She was very knowledgeable, but of importance was her sense of humor too. She's very funny and energetic :)) I loved the people of Portugal ! A few favorite tour stops were Lisbon, Gulbenkian Museum and Porto. Although I enjoyed some of the churches /monestaries, but I felt that seeing four in total would have been enough.

My wife and I had a marvelous time in Portugal, with cast and crew. We loved our entire tour group, they were so warm and welcoming. And our primary tour guide plus the many other walking tour guides were all exemplary. With some pre-trip preparation and then the trip itself, we feel like we gained a reasonable sense of perspective on Portugal’s amazing history, rich culture, beautiful landscape, delicious gastronomy, etc.

It was very informative. We felt a bit like tourists and couldn't hear the guide much of the time through the single earpiece. The ambient noise was being picked up by her microphone and broadcast along with her voice. We bought a headphone blue tooth converter that we can plug into the whisper devices and then use our air pods for next time (and also the flights).

Our guide, Fatima, exuded the spirit of Portugal! She was knowledgeable and fun loving. Too much time was spent at churches and monasteries, especially standingi in long lines in 90 degree heat. Meeting Portuguese people going about their daily lives was wonderful. I loved that our bus driver shared some meals with us. With the current itinerary, I would not recommend this tour. Perhaps schedule a day or two in a small coastal town. More people to people time.

Great tour for discovering most of Portugal! Our tour guide, Maria, was fabulous--so knowledgeable, experienced, patient, and good humored. The itinerary was well structured, the logistics very well organized, and I liked the mix of activities we did. The tour was well-designed and very interesting. Portugal is a beautiful country with a complex and rich history of many groups that overtook its rule and strong influence from the Catholic Church. The Portuguese are understandably proud of their history exploring the seas and discovering India as well as Brazil. His information on the history, the architect, olive oil, wine/port and other tidbits was very helpful along with all the special guides for tours scheduled on our trip. Our tour was very good. Todd was a realty good guide. He was quite knowledgeable of Portugal. We learned much about the culture, architecture, and gastronomy of the various regions of Portugal. Todd was quite organized and his handouts were very helpful. Overall, we found this tour to be very enjoyable.Yet, I have a few recommendations. First, any tour of Portugal should include Sintra. It was a very good tour that was so well managed by our guide, Todd. He gave us handouts of information about the country and culture that was very interesting and where really good authentic restaurants were in each place we stayed. However, at least 7-8 people got sick, 4 with COVID. A family of 4 did not fully participate in the tour and relate to others. Those were unfortunate things. Todd did handle the sickness well, having them wear masks and eating at a separate table from others.

This tour was outstanding in every way from the sites seen, accommodations and meals provided, and free time allotted. Fatima, our guide, is a true professional bringing to life the Portuguese history from ancient times to the present day. Most of the sites included in the itinerary were unique to Portugal and not readily found in other countries. As in Rick Steves tour fashion, our tour group bonded such that we drove around Portugal as one big happy family.

This was our 11th RS tour and all have been great. Portugal is certainly among our favorites. The itinerary seemed just right, the guides, as always, are great. The hotels were good, the provided meals were good and the special stops at the cork oak farm and winery were real highlights. We can't think of anything we would change.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Unusually, Our favorite wow moment occurred in Lisbon during the 50th anniversary of freedom parade on April 25th. Our RS guide, Fatima, was walking us through the city and explaining the significance of the day as the planes flew overhead and the veteran's in military vehicles made their way up to the past dictator, Salazar, office/residence where he was peacefully removed to create a democracy. Seeing the joy and pride on Fatima's face and thousands of Portuguese people was spectacular."

The Heart of Portugal is its people. We were warmly welcomed everywhere we went, with an eagerness on the part of the Portuguese to be discovered or rediscovered. Fatima, our wonderful guide, was the epitome of grace, pride, and dignity. Her flexibility and ability to think on her feet are top-notch. There were two holidays “thrown in” during our tour, and she handled the needed adjustments without seemingly breaking a sweat. We thank Fatima for these small miracles.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The beautiful and creative use of azulejo tiles across the places we visited was a string of “wow” moments for me. However, nothing beats experiencing the exuberance of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Carnation Revolution. Fatima’s and the group’s adaptability and flexibility allowed us to experience key moments of the reenactment of the peaceful revolution. It’s as if it was planned for us to be at the exact place at the exact moment to see the proud Portuguese in joyous celebration."

Portugal was new to us and a great discovery. What a truly fabulous trip! Cristina Duarte was our guide, and she was wonderful. She has such a great sense of humor, a ton of knowledge, and is a dynamo. I think she has spoiled me for any other Rick Steves' guides! My tourmates were also incredible--we all bonded and looked out for each other. The tour was very well prepared and managed. This was my second RS tour, and I'm already perusing the other tours being offered. Just outstanding!

I like Portugal very much. Unfortunately the weather was terrible during our trip. The first hard-coughing people didn't wear mask in the bus or at the dinner table. Then more and more people became sick. Many of them never wore masks even when our guide provided it. This made me realize that an immunocompromised person like me should not take a group trip during the fall season.

Portugal is a lovely country--and Maria, the tour guide, was amazing. The downsides were beyond my control--it rained every single day of the 12 day trip, often quite hard; can't control the weather! That definitely put a "damper" on the experience! Also, despite wearing an N95 for all travels by air, train, and bus, and being careful, I got a very bad cold that lasted the whole tour. I entered the tour knowing that I am not a group tour person, but wanted to try it on for size.

This was our sixth RS tour. The food, wine and the group were wonderful, the accommodations good but the weather was terrible. It rained nearly every day yet we continued to do activities outside as best we could. Christina did her best to improvise due to the weather but we still had to buy clothes and another suitcase to carry our wet clothing. This was also the only RS tour that didn’t have a place to leave laundry during the tour. Portugal is a beautiful country but not with the rain.

Fascinating, educational and very, very enjoyable. We did so much, yet also had enough free time to catch our breath. Claudia, our guide, was brilliant - clever, calm, with a wicked sense of humour. One of the best guides I've ever had. There were unexpected extra delights - apéros, an extra meal, little treats. The quality of the hotels and restaurant meals was way higher than expected. The bus was comfortable, and the driver, Victor, a magician at tight, seemingly impossible maneuvers.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I had been dreading the fado: the clips I'd seen online were so depressing. But it was so surprisingly enjoyable, fun even, that we voluntarily went to an extra show on our own! We got a front-row table at the fabled Café Santa Cruz in Coimbra, where the avuncular waiter persuaded me to try a porto-tonico cocktail. Another revelation. Then there was the food: everywhere it was delicious - fresh, well-prepared and good value. The private cork farm visit and lovely lunch was another highlight."

This was our 10th RS Tour and although all of them have been excellent, this tour was exceptional primarily due to the leadership of our guide, Claudia Da Costa. Her historical and cultural knowledge of Portugal was wonderful and her passion for her native country was evident. She was very clear in her directions prior to each segment of the journey, very aware of the needs of each group member, fun to be around, and made adjustments to the agenda as needed due to weather concerns.

"My favorite "WOW" moment was the Douro Valley and the Quinta de Santa Eufemia Port Wine vineyard. Great tour but COVID outbreak took out eight tour members, so that lowered my rating. Guide Maria was outstanding dealing with the outbreak and keeping others informed and in good spirits. Experiential visits were the highlights. As others have noted, there are too many churches on this tour. Why don't your listen to your tour members about this? Also, certain days can be exhausting, such as marching all over Coimbra on a boring walking tour because the restaurants don't open until 7.

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements and transfers are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Lisbon (LIS) and out of Porto (OPO) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Portugal.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Portugal guidebook.
