Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Portugal

We'll gather at our Lisbon hotel at 5 p.m. for a short meeting, followed by an orientation walk through our neighborhood and a "Welcome to Portugal" dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Lisbon.

Day 2: Neighborhoods of Lisbon

This morning we'll take a walking tour through Lisbon's colorful downtown neighborhoods — the Bairro Alto, the Alfama, and the Baixa. Along the way we'll learn about "village" Lisbon's neighborhood life, the poetry of the revered Fernando Pessoa, and Portugal's "Carnation Revolution," which peacefully ended nearly five decades of fascist rule in 1974. You'll have the rest of your afternoon free to visit any of Lisbon's "niche" museums (tile, fado, port wine, and other Portuguese specialties). Tonight we'll regroup and enjoy a soulful fado performance with dinner.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Lisbon.

Day 3: Seafaring Belém and the Gulbenkian

We'll begin our day with a bus tour through Lisbon to its seafaring Belém District, home to many of the city's most historic buildings. Sticking close to the waterfront, we'll learn about Portugal's golden age of exploration at the heroic Monument to the Discoveries, and how faith, money, and a knack for sailing combined to build the dazzling Monastery of Jerónimos. Then we'll take in the view from Edward VII Park before ending at the world-class Gulbenkian Museum, where we'll see how an international oil tycoon assembled a priceless art collection spanning 5,000 years. You'll have the evening free to continue to explore the museum or return to Lisbon for dinner on your own.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 1 hour. Sleep in Lisbon.

Day 4: Historic Évora

Today we'll head east to the laid-back Alentejo countryside and the history-rich university town of Évora. We'll take a walking tour of Évora's preserved-in-whitewash old section, marveling at its Corinthian-columned Roman Temple and its macabre Chapel of Bones. As you'll discover in your free afternoon and evening, Évora has a world-apart feel to it that really connects you with traditional Portugal.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Évora.

Day 5: Olives, Oaks, and Óbidos

This morning begins with a memorable visit to a working farm and estate. We'll have a chance to meet farming locals and taste-test their olive oil. Then we'll wander through their forest of cork oaks, learning how the bark is harvested and how it's being regulated today. We'll cap off our visit with lunch together, including some of the estate's wines. This afternoon we'll follow the sun as we make our way to the medieval walled town of Óbidos. Upon arrival we'll take an orientation walk through the perfectly preserved cobblestone streets and learn why this is known as Portugal's "wedding city."

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Óbidos.

Day 6: Royal Intrigue, Alcobaça, and Nazaré

We'll begin today with a visit to Alcobaça to tour the ornate Baroque-Gothic Cistercian Monastery of Santa Maria, where we'll hear the star-crossed story of King Pedro and his doomed mistress, Inês. Later we'll enjoy some fun in the sun in the old coastal fishing village of Nazaré. Splash in the waters of the Atlantic, sample the local specialty — barnacles — or take the funicular up to the historic Sítio neighborhood to enjoy its sweeping cliff-top views. This evening we'll return to Óbidos for dinner on your own.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Óbidos.

Day 7: Batalha and Fátima

We'll continue our journey north, stopping in Batalha to visit its grand Monastery of Santa María, a symbol of Portuguese pride and its victory (with help from English archers) over Spanish domination 600 years ago. Then we'll visit the nearby pilgrimage site of Fátima — a favorite of Pope John Paul II — where three children shared controversial visions of the Virgin Mary in 1917. This afternoon, our destination is Portugal's historic capital of Coimbra, where we'll end our day with dinner together in the heart of the Old Town.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Coimbra.

Day 8: Classic Coimbra

This morning we'll twist through Coimbra's maze of narrow lanes to its steeped-in-tradition, 700-year-old university. The palatial university library — with 30,000 books from the 18th century — is like nothing you've seen before. After our visit, the afternoon is yours to make your own discoveries in Coimbra. Tonight we'll rendezvous for a performance of Coimbra's unique style of fado…more likely devoted to revolutionary student ideals than lost love.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Coimbra.

Day 9: Douro Wine Country

We'll drive to Portugal's most famous wine-making region today: the lush, green Douro Valley, where we'll visit an old family estate and winery (quinta) with spectacular views of the surrounding valley. It's a perfect chance to learn all about the proud art of making fine port — and taste it too! Later in the afternoon we'll make our way to our hotel, with all evening free to relax and watch the sun set over the Douro River.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in the Douro Valley.

Day 10: Vineyard Views and Porto

Today we'll travel through terraced wine country on our way to the port city of Porto. On arrival in this rustic Portuguese San Francisco, a savvy guide will show us how to explore the city through our taste buds with a sampling of delicious local cuisine, teaching us about history, architecture, and culture along the way. We'll end our day with a relaxing cruise on the Douro River (weather permitting).

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Boat: ¾ hour. Sleep in Porto.

Day 11: Savoring Proud Porto

This morning we'll take a walking tour of Porto's riverfront Ribeira district, including the lavish rooms of its Stock Exchange Palace, the exquisitely gilded Church of São Francisco, and São Bento train station. Then you'll have time to wander on your own through Porto's lively city center — or seek out some more sipping at an old port-wine lodge. This evening we'll enjoy a final dinner together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Saúde!

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Porto.

Day 12: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Your guide will help steer you to Porto's airport, which is an easy metro or taxi ride away. Or you may want to stay for further Portuguese adventures on your own. Adeus!

Besides more rain than I'd like (when will you learn to control that, Rick Steves!?!?), I really felt like I got a great feel for the people and the country of Portugal. Fatima is beyond wonderful. We had a great group and just had a memorable experience overall.

"Really hard to pick one. Even though there wasn't much time - Fatima took us to the light house side of Nazare because it seemed like maybe there would be large waves based on the crowds - walking up to the view point there was gorgeous and memorable. I also really loved the food tour in Porto and learning about Cork Farming and the Duoro Valley views were stunning."

Portugal is a lovely country--and Maria, the tour guide, was amazing. The downsides were beyond my control--it rained every single day of the 12 day trip, often quite hard; can't control the weather! That definitely put a "damper" on the experience! Also, despite wearing an N95 for all travels by air, train, and bus, and being careful, I got a very bad cold that lasted the whole tour. I entered the tour knowing that I am not a group tour person, but wanted to try it on for size.

I like Portugal very much. Unfortunately the weather was terrible during our trip. The first hard-coughing people didn't wear mask in the bus or at the dinner table. Then more and more people became sick. Many of them never wore masks even when our guide provided it. This made me realize that an immunocompromised person like me should not take a group trip during the fall season.

This was our sixth RS tour. The food, wine and the group were wonderful, the accommodations good but the weather was terrible. It rained nearly every day yet we continued to do activities outside as best we could. Christina did her best to improvise due to the weather but we still had to buy clothes and another suitcase to carry our wet clothing. This was also the only RS tour that didn’t have a place to leave laundry during the tour. Portugal is a beautiful country but not with the rain.

Cristina was a superb tour guide. She was very well informed about her home country of Portugal and it was clear she loves it and wanted to share her knowledge. I especially enjoyed her information on the financial aspects of the country since that is my background.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It was the truck ride through the cork, pine nut, olive and grape orchard, Very jolly with all of us slowly rding along in the sunshine. Then later, a superb lunch and of course, wine. "

This was our 10th RS Tour and although all of them have been excellent, this tour was exceptional primarily due to the leadership of our guide, Claudia Da Costa. Her historical and cultural knowledge of Portugal was wonderful and her passion for her native country was evident. She was very clear in her directions prior to each segment of the journey, very aware of the needs of each group member, fun to be around, and made adjustments to the agenda as needed due to weather concerns.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I found both the visits to the Cork Farm and the Ceramic Factory to be very memorable. Both visits gave me opportunity to meet local businessmen who took great pride in their efforts. The Prado performance in Lisbon was exceptional as well. One other "wow" moment was the library of Coimbra. "

Maggie

Tour: 10/11/23

Fascinating, educational and very, very enjoyable. We did so much, yet also had enough free time to catch our breath. Claudia, our guide, was brilliant - clever, calm, with a wicked sense of humour. One of the best guides I've ever had. There were unexpected extra delights - apéros, an extra meal, little treats. The quality of the hotels and restaurant meals was way higher than expected. The bus was comfortable, and the driver, Victor, a magician at tight, seemingly impossible maneuvers.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I had been dreading the fado: the clips I'd seen online were so depressing. But it was so surprisingly enjoyable, fun even, that we voluntarily went to an extra show on our own! We got a front-row table at the fabled Café Santa Cruz in Coimbra, where the avuncular waiter persuaded me to try a porto-tonico cocktail. Another revelation. Then there was the food: everywhere it was delicious - fresh, well-prepared and good value. The private cork farm visit and lovely lunch was another highlight."

This was a thoroughly delightful trip. We are Americans now living in France but had never been to Portugal. Our guide was world-class, the hotels -- with one exception -- we would gladly go back to and we would recommend this tour to everyone. This was our fourth Rick Steves Tour. Our guide, Fatima Bugarin, was outstanding. Her infectious personality, her love of her country, her energy, and her desire to make sure her "tour friends" learned about Portugal's history, food and wine, and "special surprises", made this the best tour we have taken to date. I highly recommend visiting Portugal and hopefully you will be lucky enough to have Fatima as your tour guide. Fatima is a 10 out of 10.

Our guide was amazing. Fatima's knowledge of the History and Culture of Portugal was deep and intense. My learning experience was more than satisfied. The Tour achieved its goal of displaying the Heart of Portugal. Each stop provided a new insight and understanding of this nations varied ethnicity cultural trends, past inluences, current problems and future goals. The everday people that we encountered could not have been more accomodating.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite "WOW" moment was the Douro Valley and the Quinta de Santa Eufemia Port Wine vineyard. The valley itself was a beautiful terroir with a climate and location that supports the grapes which produce Port Wine. More important was our interaction with the family. The history of the founding of the winery, the growth and continued family involvement in the production of their Port imparted a sense of pride and closeness to the land. It was a beautiful moment. I felt at home. "

This was my first Rick Steves Tour and also the first time my husband and I had not planned the trip ourselves. I really enjoyed having everything planned ahead of time and meeting the wonderful people on the tour. The guides were very informative and helpful, The hotels were fun, funky and in some cases luxurious. The Bus transportation was comfortable and the drivers we had were awesome the way they traversed the streets and countryside roads.

"The best moment was at the Cork Tree Farm and the meal that followed the tour. I was so impressed with Maria and all her family does to maintain the farm that was in their family for over 400 years. Learning how the methods they use agriculturally were fascinating and the meal was absolutely delicious. You felt like you were just a member of the family at a gathering. The wine was also delicious! "

This is my 3rd Rick Steve's tour and per usual, the tour was well planned and orchestrated and our guide, Javier was personable, knowledgeable and fun. I think some activities should be eliminated such as the number of churches and monasteries, add in Sintra, which I did tour on my own, more time in Nazare, travel further south to Algarve.

Another fabulous Rick Steve’s tour completed… This was Best of Portugal and it truly was the BEST. Great tour but COVID outbreak took out eight tour members, so that lowered my rating. Guide Maria was outstanding dealing with the outbreak and keeping others informed and in good spirits. Experiential visits were the highlights. As others have noted, there are too many churches on this tour. Why don't your listen to your tour members about this? Also, certain days can be exhausting, such as marching all over Coimbra on a boring walking tour because the restaurants don't open until 7.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Top moment was stomping grapes in Duoro Valley. Other highlights were the cork farm and ceramics factory tour. Least favorite moment was visiting all the churches--talk about overload. You could easily cut one or two of them and give tour members more free time."

This was my first time to Portugal, a place about which I knew very little. By the time I left, I felt I knew something of its geography, history, culture and people. This trip, my 5th Rick Steves tour, far exceeded expectations. We had a most outstanding tour guide, Rafael Pereira. He made Portugal come alive. He was thoughtful, caring, kind and a font of knowledge. Bus rides weren't boring because he was giving us history lessons or reading poetry or starting interesting conversations.

Guides both primary and local were all excellent with a deep knowledge of the area. The whisper devices were practical solution to a problem created by the size of the group, (24). Immediately before the trip I was in Morocco with another tour company where our group size was 14. I realize that there is a balance to be struck between affordability and size, but a slightly smaller group would have been nice. Accommodations exceeded my expectations. This was my first Rick Steves trip; well done

This was my first Rick Steves tour and it did not disappoint. I felt like I got to see Portugal in a way that would have been hard to replicate on my own. I was also impressed that my group had so many members that had been on multiple Rick Steves tours, that's a good endorsement.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It is very difficult to pick just one wow moment. I loved Lisbon with all of its history and beautiful scenic views and will always remember the fado performance. I also loved the visit to the olive oil and cork farm. It was great to hear the stories of how this land had been in the family for generations and to learn how they manage their trees and animals and live in a sustainable way. After the tour, we had a wonderful meal with their wines. "

.Over the years, we've experienced many different types of European tours, including 5 separate country tours using using Rick's guidebooks for hotels, travel and guide recommendations. Overall, this was an outstanding two week visit to the heart of Portugal, both in towns and cities visited and also the historical/emotional personality of Portugal. For us, being on this guided tour outweighed the added cost, knowing we were not missing anything in the 11 days there and much less work for me!

"Many favorites, The Douro Valley winery tour/luncheon with the owners, along with experiencing the beauty of it with our ride through it. After seeing Californian, Italian and French vineyards, Douro Valley topped them all. The cork farm experience for the day was another wow surprise. Not to be left out is the amazing architecture and historical impact of Portugal going back to the Roman ruins to the Art Deco and UNESCO rehab going on in Porto. Did I mention food and wine? Don't miss it !!"

I absolutely loved every minute of my tour. Our guide, Fatima, was so wonderful and her knowledge of Portugal's history, architecture, and culture was so impressive. Her love of her country shone through everything she said and did, and she truly loves what she does. The local guides in each small town were equally fantastic and brought so many interesting facts and stories into their tours. It was amazing to me that every little town has it's own rich history and offerings. I loved it!!

"It's hard to choose just one. I was moved by the love of and respect for the land that was displayed by the folks showing us the cork forest. It was so beautiful there, and the way they work with nature to preserve the health of the trees for future generations was so wonderful. I felt the same way when we got to the Duoro Valley and toured the vineyards. The hard work they do there is so impressive! I was also floored by the beauty of the multiple monasteries and cathedrals, esp. Batalha."

This is a superb, well thought out tour that balances Portugal's heritage, landscape, history, food, and culture. Because of outstanding planning, we avoided large tourist crowds when possible, such as being the 2nd tour admitted to the monastery at Jeronimos and the last tour of the day at King Joao's library in Coimbra. I feel it is important to continue including all 3 monasteries on the tour due to variations in architecture and the national event each commemorated.

"Hands down: our visit to the cork farm. It was extremely informative to learn firsthand about the management of this family owned estate. I appreciated hearing about the farm's history, including its being taken from the family and collectivized after the 1974 Carnation Revolution...and the family's regaining ownership some 15 years later. The meal we were served there was superb, and it was great fun to celebrate two tour members' birthdays on that day."

Portugal is a great place to tour and the Rick Steves trip got to most of the places I wanted to see, including a couple that in hindsight I could have gone without seeing. For me however, the pace of the group walking and of the trip in general was too slow, and there was way to much emphasis on food and wine. The Portugal Tour was well-planned and gave us a great introduction to the country. Since I haven’t travelled much out of the USA, I appreciated learning how to be a tourist in a foreign country in many respects: Javier pointing out the potential pickpockets who were scouting out tourists passing the funicular gave my daughter and I insights to how to be safe travelers. The pacing of the tour and the experiences in balancing gave us a sense of how to plan the rest of our trip after our tour.

I really was wowed with all of the Roman site Diana in Evora as well as the chapel of the bones. Now I understand why there is so much "buzz" about Portugal; it truly is a land of remarkable history, amazing sights and a people who were so happy to welcome visitors and share their story. "Two experiences tie for my favorite "wow" moment on this tour: first, being caught-up in a college student celebratory parade at the end of their term in Coimbra (actually an annual ritual much like Mardi Gras!), and second, initially seeing the steep terraced vineyards of the Duoro Valley as our bus went from the high ridge down to our hosts awaiting us---- both were something to experience as hands-on memories."

Maria the guide was a super human, kind, insightful, patient, brilliant! Accommodations was a great mix and excellent locations. You bought all our wine, thank you! Good variety of activities and history through the centuries. I appreciated her teaching us how to ride the public transportation. Good amount of time off with lots of suggestions for how to fill it. Good variety of tours and experiences.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Besides Maria, I liked the experiences, such as the tour of Ceramico de Coimbra, the cork farm, the port tasting and luncheon in the Douro Valley, the boat ride on the Douro, the food tasting tour. Historically, what stuck with me, and I've repeated to many, is the dissolution of the monasteries in 1834 and the events that led up to it. We saw so many beautiful structures that were now public. Sorry, I can't pick a favorite. "

Parts of it were very good. Too many church/monasteries. The hotel in Cuimbra(sp) was terrible. It should not be a two night stay. The first meal at the train station was not a good intro to the tour. The restaurant behind the hotel was awesome {on our own} The happy hour we had at Book and Cook (the library restaurant) was awesome. You should look at it as a group stop.

Portugal is so different that other European countries. I am glad I got to experience it again. My first trip there was part of an early Spain-Portugal tour with limited days in Portugal. I felt I got to know Portugal so much better on this tour. There is a different mindset in Portugal that I appreciate: friendly, helpful, grateful I was there. The history is unique and was shared with us in a beautiful and personal way. I loved this trip

Our first RS tour was wonderful. Roberta was a fantastic tour director and the local guides were an interesting bunch. My greatest uncertainty turned out to be the greatest positive - traveling with 20+ other people for 10 days. We had a great group and made many new friends. The site selection was excellent and the accommodations were clean and well located, if a bit austere. COVID is still an issue and impacted our group unfortunately.

This was our first tour, and we were surprised at how easily we fell into the group tour family. The majority of others in the group had done many tours, so we learned a lot from them. The majority of the outings were fantastic! As many of the days were described as 'strenuous', I had hoped for a little more mileage and exercise. I wouldn't call anything we did even moderately taxing. I was the lone plant-based eater in the group and was very happy with the efforts to make sure I was well fed!

Portugal was more scenic than I expected. The cities and towns were clean and safe. I was impressed with number of people that spoke English. I was surprised by the steep terrain of Lisbon and Porto. I gained less weight on this trip due to the amount of hiking. When the tour was over, I felt that I had a good understanding of the country.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The tours of the cork farm and the winery. Both were extraordinary in their own way. This is my fourth tour and farm tours are always the highlight as you have an opportunity to visit, interact and understand the people who live there. Each of these farm tours was extraordinary in their own way and was a break from the cathedrals, castles and monasteries. If there was a side tour during the first week, that might be a consideration--maybe an apple or tree farm???? "

The RS Portugal tour was great. Our guide Maria was outstanding. Our Driver Alex was professional and safely navigated the Portugal roadways. The hotel accomodations met our needs. First RS tour since pandemic, 8th overall. This was another excellent tour. The tour guide was very well organized, and everything went smoothly. Because of covid concerns, we wore a mask most of the time, particularly on the bus and enclosed spaces. Worked out ok..

"Going to the cork farm and seeing both the cork producing process, how hard farming is, and what happened in the past when the family farm was taken from them by the government and how the resources were misused by people who did not know what they were ding with cork production. Interesting how farms need to innovate to maintain profitability since cork and other agricultural goods are a commodity, not something that has intellectual property rights. Second was the vast complex that Fatima is."

I really enjoyed this tour--our guide was great and all the events and activities were well-organized. The weather cooperated, too, which is always a plus. Great guide (Claudia), interesting places to visit, good food for tour meals (except at the Fado restaurant where the cod was leathery). Being a non consumer of alcohol, there seemed to be too large a focus on wine and sharing the cost for other's alcohol doesn't seem fair. However, an effort was made to provide alternatives for my wife and me.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite "moments" were each time we started down some hill! On other Rick Steves tours we were told that there would be days with a lot of walking. None of those warnings seemed to have much substance. In Portugal, however, there isn's a flat spot in the entire country. On Rick's video, we saw use of the cable cars, etc. On our tour we never used public transportation and my wife and I (both in our mid 70's) were very tired some nights. However, that didn't take away from our enjoyment."

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements and transfers are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Lisbon (LIS) and out of Porto (OPO) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Portugal.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Portugal guidebook.
