Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to Portugal
We'll gather at our Porto hotel at 3 p.m. for a short "Welcome to Portugal" meeting, followed by an orientation walk through our neighborhood and the vibrant Bolhão Market. Tonight, we'll get to know one another over dinner together.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Porto.
Day 2: Savoring Proud Porto
This morning we'll take a walking tour of Porto's riverfront Ribeira district, including the lavish rooms of its Stock Exchange Palace, the exquisitely gilded Church of São Francisco, and São Bento train station. Then we’ll enjoy a peaceful cruise on the Douro River, floating under many of Porto's majestic bridges. The afternoon and evening are all yours to wander through Porto's lively city center — or seek out some sipping at a port-wine lodge.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Boat: ¾ hour. No bus. Sleep in Porto.
Day 3: Douro Wine Country
After breakfast, we'll board our comfy, spacious bus and drive to Portugal's most famous wine-making region: the lush, green Douro Valley. We'll stop for a vineyard tour, port-wine tasting, and lunch at a historic family estate and winery (quinta) with spectacular views, before making our way to our hotel. Tonight, you're free to relax, sip, and savor the sunset.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in the Douro Valley.
Day 4: Classic Coimbra
Today we'll drive through more terraced wineries on our way out of the Douro Valley and toward our next destination: Portugal's historic capital of Coimbra. After settling into our hotel, we’ll make our way to Coimbra's steeped-in-tradition, 700-year-old university, which features a palatial library that's a bibliophile's dream — with 30,000 books from the 18th century. This evening, you're free to enjoy dinner on your own in the heart of Coimbra's Old Town.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Coimbra.
Day 5: Tiles and Tunes of Coimbra
We'll start the day learning about Coimbra's treasured tradition of hand-painted tiles, before enjoying a performance of the unique, local style of fado…more likely devoted to revolutionary student ideals than lost love. The rest of the day is yours to explore Coimbra’s Arab-flavored Old Town with its twisty maze of narrow lanes, old-timey shops, tiny restaurants, and vibrant market — and make your own discoveries in this delightful college town.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Coimbra.
Day 6: Batalha and Fátima
Today, we'll continue our journey south, stopping in Batalha to visit its grand Monastery of Santa Maria, a symbol of Portuguese pride and its victory (with help from English archers) over Spanish domination 600 years ago. Then we'll visit the nearby pilgrimage site of Fátima — a favorite of Pope John Paul II — where three children shared controversial visions of the Virgin Mary in 1917. We'll finish in the quaint town of Tomar, where we'll take an orientation walk along the lush riverside and enjoy dinner together.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Tomar.
Day 7: Tomar's Medieval Mystique
This morning we'll take a tour of Tomar’s Castle of the Knights Templar and Convent of Christ. Built in the 12th century by the mysterious and powerful Knights Templar, its stunning Oz-like circular church is where knights would go to be blessed before battle. The rest of the day is free for you to ride a tuk-tuk, nurse a coffee at the edge of the town's checkered main square, or just wander Tomar's time-warp streets and enjoy its old-world scene.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Tomar.
Day 8: Olives, Oaks, and Bones
Today begins with a memorable visit to a working farm and estate, where you'll have a chance to meet farming locals, taste-test their olive oil (and wine), and wander their forest of cork oak. After lunch on the estate, we'll continue south through the laid-back Alentejo countryside to the history-rich university town of Évora, where we'll tour the preserved-in-whitewash old core, marveling at its Corinthian-columned Roman Temple and its poignant Chapel of Bones. The rest of the day is free for you to explore more of Évora.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Évora.
Day 9: Portugal's South Coast
Today's destination is Portugal's dramatic, sun-baked south coast: the Algarve. Along the way, we'll stop at Cabo São Vicente — Portugal's "Land's End" and Europe's southwestern most point — before continuing to salty, maritime Sagres to explore its weatherbeaten fortress and have lunch together at a historic Pousada. After arriving at our hotel, your guide will orient you to our neighborhood before setting you free for the evening.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in or near Lagos.
Day 10: Free Day in the Algarve
You'll take a "vacation from your vacation" today to explore the sandy beaches, jagged rocks, and rolling green hills of the Algarve. Luxuriate in the breezy resort vibes of Lagos…rent a kayak to paddle the crystal-clear waters of the Atlantic…take a boat cruise along the coast to get a different view of the seaside cliffs…or kick back and soak up the sun at one of the areas many fine beaches.
Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No bus. Sleep in or near Lagos.
Day 11: Seafaring Belém
After breakfast, we'll drive to Lisbon — stopping at its seafaring Belém District, home to many of the city's most historic buildings. Sticking close to the waterfront, we'll learn about Portugal's golden age of exploration at the 16th–century Belém Tower and heroic Monument to the Discoveries and discover how faith, money, and a knack for sailing combined to build the dazzling Monastery of Jerónimos. Then, after settling into our hotel, the rest of the day is all yours to explore the city and find dinner on your own in Lisbon's exciting food scene.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Lisbon.
Day 12: Neighborhoods of Lisbon
This morning we'll take a walking tour through Lisbon's colorful downtown neighborhoods — the Bairro Alto, the Alfama, and the Baixa. Along the way we'll learn about "village" Lisbon's neighborhood life, the poetry of the revered Fernando Pessoa, and Portugal's "Carnation Revolution," which peacefully ended nearly five decades of fascist rule in 1974. You'll have the rest of your afternoon free to visit any of Lisbon's "niche" museums (tile, fado, port wine, and other Portuguese specialties). Tonight we'll regroup to enjoy a soulful fado performance and a farewell dinner, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Saúde!
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Lisbon.
Day 13: Tour Over After Breakfast
Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Your guide will help steer you to Lisbon's airport, which is an easy metro or taxi ride away. Or you may want to stay for further Portuguese adventures on your own. Adeus!

Great guide, full of personality. Great fellow travelers, they were there to learn about the country and to make friends. Good cross section of the country and places to see. Perhaps could have adjusted the balance of time spent in places, but this is very much reflection of personal preference.

Mama Maggie was fun and chalked full of history. I wanted to take a Master’s class with her next month to keep learning! From one end of Portugal to the other we learned so much! Highlights included the Maritime Museum which was full of amazing sailing history, mapping, actual boats and ancient cannons in Lisboa to the dynamic beauty of the Douro Valley.

"Learning that Portuguese sailors discovered how to sail upwind by using triangle sails. And also that they discovered sailing nearly to Brazil and then heading to the Cape of Good Hope was the most efficient and successful way to get to the Indian Ocean to further their spice trade as well basically discover & reign over the world in the 1500 & 1600’s. Reading “Conquerors” now to fill in the holes. What they did in the name of Christianity was not always very Christian! "

It was a great experience from start to finish. Our tour leader Todd was extremely knowledgeable and so enthusiastic about Portugal. All of the local guides did a great job as well. Our driver Andre was very competent driving on those winding roads. As always I felt like we wouldn't have had the same experience if we weren't on a RS tour. Todd was also very helpful with suggestions for our time away from the group. Speaking of the group, everyone was amazing. Great people.

"The Douro Valley was spectacular & the visit at the Quinta was great. The visit to the ceramics factory was also very interesting. The standout was our visit to the olives & oaks. It was very interesting not just hearing about the processes but also getting an owners perspective about running an old family business in modern day Portugal. Our lunch following was another one of a kind experience we never would have had if not for being on a RS tour. The food was incredible. "

This was an average Rick Steves Tour which still puts it way above other tours. I thought 3 days in Lisbon was way too much. There is not much going on. The museum was closed and we spent two mornings walking around Lisbon looking at buildings from the outside. Cut Lisbon back to one day unless you are going to include the castle. Also, almost all the elevators and finiculas are closed down. Lisbon is too touristy. I enjoyed the country side and Porto much more. Porto seemed much more alive and

"There were several "wow" moments, my top two would be the Fado performance in Lisboa and the trip to the Cork Farm. It was heart-warming seeing the young ladies and men carrying on a tradition that goes way back in the Portuguese history. And the Cork farm was similar in the fact that this land had been in the same families hands for many generations. It was also very interesting in learning how the Cork was harvested and all of the products that are created with the cork and nothing is wasted. "

"We had the good fortune to meet and spend part of the day with two families in the Northern Alentejo and Douro Valley, each who have made their living in those places for generations. Such truly nice people who have endured and were so welcoming and happy to share their history and fruits of their labor with us. And arriving in Fatima on Palm Sunday in time to be a part of the outdoor Mass was a moving experience that was yet another WOW moment for me."

Our main tour guide Fatima helped make the trip for me. I’m happy to be able to call her my friend!! Her sense of humor first and foremost created a fun and lively atmosphere. Her passion for Portugal and its people was insightful and heartwarming. Her storytelling piqued my interest to deepen my knowledge about the people of Portugal and the many points of interest we visited. Barb F.

"Favorite Wow moment was Fatima's explanation of Knights Templar. Her prior teaching skills certainly were used to its full advantage and definitely piqued my interest to know more to the point I bought a book in the shop. Also, Fatima on Palm Sunday was quite emotional for me personally Barb F."

I really enjoyed my tour to Portugal. The guides were phenomenal. I learned so much about the history, culture of each place we visited. The accommodations were very nice, the food delicious. The schedule was busy, but with lots of time to explore on our own. Although Portugal is hilly, I found it manageable. I loved the architecture, the tiles, the weather, food and of course the Portuguese people. I enjoyed meeting my tour mates. So many interesting folks from across the country.

Best of Portugal was my first Rick Steves tour. I was initially skeptical about a bus tour, but this tour has completely changed my outlook. In fact, the tour was beyond my expectations, taking us into cultural aspects of Portugal over rolling hills and through picturesque locations, interestingly narrated by our guide. Every day was different and such a delight! I also loved the free time to explore or relax. I can understand why so many of our group have taken numerous Rick Steves tours.

The other point is something I have come to enjoy on other Rick Steve’s tours, the quality and comrradery of the people we traveled with. Out of all the RS tours I have been on (about 10), Portugal is ranked at the bottom. I did not expect that, but it is how I feel. Portugal itself has a lot to offer. The history, the scenery/sites, and the people make it interesting. However, the tour seemed to be missing something. Maybe it is that the tour was at the end of winter so fresh sardines were not cooking! Or, that many of the museums were closed to renovation. Not many museums - most.

With high tour ratings and very good past Rick Steves tour experiences, my expectations coming into this trip were very high. While a nice sampler to most of the country, the tour felt too compressed, often times running late and leaving little time for on own discoveries. "We happened to be in Tomar on October 13, a historically significant day for the Knights Templar. We had just visited their castle in Tomar that morning when we learned of a local evening ceremony honoring the Knights. To be part of a local ceremony commemorating a historical event we'd just learned about was amazing! We joined a procession of locals dressed in Medieval dress and walked with them to the town square as they laid a wreath and lit a fire to commemorate the Knights."

"On a trip where the over-the-top 'Manueline' style of ornate architecture became a familiar sight, the most amazing moment I remember is stepping into, and trying to absorb, the octagonal chapel of the Castle of the Knights Templar in Tomar. The inner space, the outer space, the carvings and the art were overwhelming. I can't forget the painting of the Ascension of Christ, in which his followers are looking up to the top of the picture frame where just two sandaled feet dangle out of a robe!"

For me this tour was a very informative and interesting introduction to Portugal and its history. Of course I learned in my school days some names and very broad strokes of Portugal's role in connecting with other parts of the world beyond Europe, but seeing Lisbon's harbor and monuments made it much more real. Similarly, I had a faint concept of Roman and even earlier connections as well as North African and Islamic impacts on its history, but seeing sites and ruins brought it all together.

"Too many to choose from! Old Lisbon to the present. Bones as building materials and Roman Ruins in Evora. Cork farming's surprising relevance paired with olive oil and wine making all one one large and unique estate. The Knights Templar explained as an advance in banking as well as a source of great wealth. The gorgeous Douro Valley and the views from the vinyard and winery. Porto's rich history, highly sophisticated commerce, and laborinthian layout seemed unique."

I came to Portugal somewhat apprehensive about making a return approach to my heritage, having grown up in a family that clearly had made an effort to be accepted as American. From the first meet and greet, where Fátima assisted in returning the pronunciation of my Portuguese surname, to her work in fostering the connection to the warm people of Portugal, and fully to the moment that we finished our tour in Porto, I found, every day, the most enjoyable experience in Europe that I could imagine.

WOW was connecting to the traditions that I lived in within my grandparents home and at their table, to reminding myself of the past of which I had read. I have enjoyed every Rick Steve’s’ experience. (#4 for me) The tour planners and excellent guides developed another memory-filled adventure. What a beautiful country! Not only the varied landscape, but its charm and especially its people. I appreciate the plan for each day-enough information and guided exploration with time to wander in a manner fitting our energy level and interests. The people have shown amazing resilience and resourcefulness recovering from political/natural challenges.

"I have 2 WOW moments (3 if I count our amazing guide Claudia). First, the cork farm visit. I learned so much about a product I’ve taken for granted. (I have a cork purse to remember this experience.) I admire how the family has diversified with olive oil and wine to offset the gap in cork harvesting. Second, was Fátima. We visited on a drizzly Sunday and arrived to the ethereal sound of organ music and choral singing. This whole experience overwhelmed me and brought me to tears. "

All the guides were exceptional, friendly, and knowledgeable. We appreciated the way their individual personalities and sense of humor showed through. All the surprise treats for the group and celebrating birthdays. Through the leadership of our group leader, Maria, we got to know our travel companions. We felt like we were saying goodbye to our family

"Who knew learning about cork would be so fascinating!!! Igor me, the meal after the tour was probably my favorite. Delicious. Beautiful family. With that said, learning about port wine was interesting. The unexpected surprise and the most fun opportunity was stomping grapes. I friend and I felt like Lucy and Ethel (I Love Lucy episode of stomping grapes)! Learning about cork, port wine, and ceramics from the families who operated the businesses was an added bonus. "

"I had two wow moments. First, seeing the old trams still in use in Lisbon. Their presence just seemed to push me back in time. My 2nd wow was the Douro Valley. I’ve seen plenty of vineyards but the way the valley is planted is quite unique. Also, since it was harvest time for the white grapes, our group had the chance to “stomp” some grapes and our host at the winery made it a very memorable experience. "

Hotels & Flights
Tour Hotels
In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour in the Documents section of your tour account.
Flights
Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements and transfers are completely up to you.
Most tour members arrange to fly into Porto (OPO) and out of Lisbon (LIS) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Portugal.
We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Portugal guidebook.
