Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Sweden

We'll meet at our Stockholm hotel at 4 p.m. for a "Välkomna till Skandinavia" get-together, followed by dinner and an orientation walk around our neighborhood.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Stockholm.

Day 2: Stockholm's Old City and the Vasa

This morning we'll enjoy a walking tour through the cobbled alleyways of Stockholm's Gamla Stan (Old City), learning about its historic Stortorget Square, cathedral, and Royal Palace. After free time for lunch, we'll board a boat and cross the harbor to visit the Vasa Museum, where we'll marvel at the remains of the 200-foot warship Vasa, which sank here on her maiden voyage nearly 400 years ago. Your late afternoon is free to explore more of this cosmopolitan city.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Boat: ½ hour. Sleep in Stockholm.

Day 3: Modern Stockholm and Cozy Kalmar

This morning we'll tour Stockholm's City Hall, home of the Nobel Prize banquet and striking mosaic murals celebrating humanism and the ideal of people working together in community. Then, after stopping along the Göta Canal for a lunch break, we'll drive through beautiful birch forests on our way to the seafaring, bridge-and-water-laced town of Kalmar.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 6 hours. Sleep in Kalmar.

Day 4: Kalmar Castle and Copenhagen

Today we'll explore what may be Sweden's most striking, historically significant building: bay-and-moat-ringed Kalmar Castle. As we tour the castle's interior and beautiful grounds, we'll learn about Sweden's 16th-century struggle for independence from the Danes. Then, to reach Copenhagen, we'll drive across the awe-inspiring five-mile Öresund bridge and tunnel connecting Sweden and Denmark. We'll get to know our neighborhood by strolling up to the lively Strøget pedestrian center, followed by dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Copenhagen.

Day 5: Playful and Progressive Copenhagen

This morning we'll dive into the sights and sounds of Copenhagen's historical center on a walking tour with a local guide. The rest of your day is free to enjoy Europe's best people-watching on the Strøget, tour the National Museum, visit the fanciful Tivoli Gardens, or experience the counterculture of Christiania.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Copenhagen.

Day 6: Viking Ships and Ærø Island Charms

After breakfast we'll drive to Roskilde to prowl through the evocative Viking Ship Museum, where we'll learn about the rough-and-tumble, yet surprisingly sophisticated Viking culture of a thousand years ago. We'll also visit Denmark's venerable Roskilde Cathedral (when available), the resting place of 38 kings and queens of Denmark and the first Gothic church ever built of brick. Then a scenic ferry ride will take us to the nostalgic little island of Ærø and the old windjammer port of Ærøskøbing. Tonight we'll enjoy a tour of the Old Merchants' Court and a traditional Danish feast together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Boat: 1½ hours. Sleep on the island of Ærø (groups may be split between two B&Bs).

Day 7: All Day to Explore Ærø Island

You'll have the morning free to relax and savor this epitome of small-town Denmark, or get Ærø-dynamic and pedal a rented bike past thatched cottages, tidy farms, and windswept bluffs. We'll regroup this afternoon for a bus tour of the island. We'll return to Ærøskøbing, where you'll be free for dinner and the rest of the evening. The pub by the harbor is a fun place to meet the locals.

Walking light to strenuous: your choice. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep on the island of Ærø.

Day 8: Coastal Sweden

Today we'll sail off the island of Ærø as we drive up the Swedish coastline to the seaside town of Varberg. Along the way we'll stop for lunch before saying "farvel" to Denmark. In the quaint town of Varberg, your guide will provide an orientation before setting you free for dinner on your own.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Boat: 2 hours. Sleep in Varberg.

Day 9: Swedish Fishing and Artistic Oslo

Our final destination today is Norway and its capitol, Oslo. Along the way, we'll stop at charming 19th century boathouse and take a boat ride through the Swedish west coast archipelago to commune with the sea and local fishermen. We'll have a light seafood lunch together before continuing our journey to Oslo. After arrival, we'll visit Frogner Park, home to Gustav Vigeland's whimsical, lifelike sculptures just before our "Welcome to Oslo" dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4½ hours. Boat: 1 hour. Sleep in Oslo.

Day 10: Historic Oslo and Norway's Seafaring Past

This morning we will take a walking tour around the harbor and through the heart of Oslo, learning about Norway's history and politics along the way. With your Oslo Pass (giving you free admission to most museums and public transportation), you'll have plenty of free time to visit the Norwegian Resistance Museum or your choice of the city's other fine museums. Your guide will also orient you to the short boat ride to Bygdøy peninsula where you will find a treasure trove of nautical history, such as the Fram Museum, Maritime Museum, and Kon-Tiki Museum. The evening is free to explore even more of the city and it's nightlife.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Boat: ½ hour. Sleep in Oslo.

Day 11: Norwegian Traditions and Scenic Mountains

Driving out of Oslo, today we'll learn about daily Norwegian life and traditions. We'll tour a Norwegian Open-Air Folk Museum, including its array of sod-roofed houses and remarkable 12th-century stave church, constructed entirely from wood. After a scenic afternoon drive through farmland and forests, we'll settle into our rustic, creaky mountain hotel, and share a traditional dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 6 hours. Sleep in the Norwegian Mountains.

Day 12: Fjord Country and Bergen

Make sure your camera is ready: Today is scenery day! After breakfast, our bus will climb over the mountains for a panorama of glittering snow and 8,100-foot peaks. We'll then take a dramatic corkscrew drive down to sea level. After lunch, we'll hop aboard a boat for a 2-hour scenic Sognefjord cruise between cliffs and waterfalls (replicating the fjord cruise portion of the "Norway in a Nutshell" route). Then we're back aboard our bus for one more scenic stretch of highway before you're free for dinner and the rest of the evening in Bergen.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 6 hours. Boat: 2½ hours. Sleep in Bergen.

Day 13: All Day in Charming Bergen

This morning our guide will walk us through the salty history of this seafaring town, including the enchanting old Hanseatic wharf area, where wooden warehouses lean together and recall their glory days as a center of North Atlantic trade. To cap off our morning, we'll ride the funicular to the top of Mount Fløyen for thrilling views of Bergen, islands, and fjords. The rest of your afternoon is free to do some hiking, explore more of Bergen, or buy one of those hand-knit wool sweaters that caught your eye back at the wharf. This evening we'll gather for a hearty Norwegian feast to share travel memories and toast new friends. Skål!

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Bergen.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Those returning home can catch a short flight from Bergen to Copenhagen, London, or other European cities for your direct flight home. Farvel!

Itinerary specifics subject to change.

This was our first Rick Steves' tour. I could not imagine a more knowledgable and entertaining tour guide, as well as a congenial and compatible group of fellow travelers as accompanied us on this two-week Scandinavian experience. The itinerary was well planned and provided us with opportunities to become immersed in the culture unlike any of our previous foreign travel experiences.

"The two "wow" moments were during our stay on Aero Island and Aeroskobing and our days spent in the Jotunheimen Mountains and the overnight stay at the Roisheim Hotel. The quaint and charming ambience of the Aero Islands and the rugged and raw beauty of the Norwegian Mountains were spellbinding!"

We had a great tour. Nice group of fellow travelers, wonderful itinerary, superbly organized and Åsa was a wonderful guide. She was knowledgable, energetic, and was great at sharing her experiences with the history, customs, and sights of Scandinavia. The local guides and Heidi (assistant) were informative and lended their own expertise. It was a great tour in a beautiful part of Europe!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"In terms of sights, the mountains and fjords of Norway particularly the overnight at Røsheim Lodge. But what I keep thinking most about is one of Asa's talks as we were on the bus. She took a hypothetical Swede we named "Swen" and went through his entire life explaining the government entitlements that he received, some of the social customs, and how the social values are reflected and strengthened with the state policies. I learned as much about Sweden in that hour then I did from the sights!"

What a great time! Our trip was filled with beauty, history, education, laughter, camaraderie and wonder. Our guide, Åsa, was wonderful from the time we met. She kept the tour fun while we were learning about Scandinavia. Her enthusiasm was inspiring. Our apprentice guide, Heide, was also very knowledgeable and fun. It was more fun to have a a Swede AND a Dane as our guides?? We had a great tour group as well. A wonderful bunch of new travel friends! No grumps! So I guess we liked the tour??

"The Røisheim Hotel! The bath tubs! The food! The owners and staff! The rustic charm! The bathtub accessed via ladder! One more if I may. Our local guide in Stockholm, HÅkan (sp?) invited us into his home as part of our tour. To get that close and personal was a gesture above and beyond. There was a bonding that seemed to take place and we were given yet another example of, how he put it, “we’re all the same”. ??"

Ylva & Leif (bus driver) were an outstanding team! Due to a landslide outside Oslo, our trip was reworked with a new hotel & route! Leif was exceptionally adept at navigating the hairpin turns on a route he had not driven before. Finding a hotel to accommodate 28 on a Friday night, with dinner & breakfast was challenging, but Ylva was successful & many felt adding Lindstrom Hotel in Laerdal, Norway to future Scandinavian tours would be a pleasant change. Small, quiet town. Stunning scenery.

I MUST mention our stay on AEro Island (Denmark)!! charming, colorful houses. fabulous weather. comfortable room at Pa Torvet. love-able local guide, John (known as Louisa's husband) & learning how AEro has revived their economy (w/weddings) & the entrepreneurial partnerships being developed (AEro Whiskey, restoring buildings on town square)."

Our tour guide (Nina) did a fabulous job guiding us through each of the countries. She provided us with a ton of history and little surprises along the way which was very thoughtful. And, as someone with Celiac Decease, she did her best to make sure my GF needs were met. As with our last RS tour, all of the local guides were outstanding especially Haakan in Stockholm. Our driver (Christer) was funny, witty and navigated us through some difficult spots. Nina and him seemed to pair up very nicely.

Every day revealed new delights in Scandinavia. Some were in the historic hearts of urban capitals. Some were on a remote island, or in countryside, mountains and fjords, or on an overnight ferry. Our excellent guide, Pal Johansen, used the time on extended bus trips to share charming stories of growing up in Norway, as well as insights into the cultural differences between each country, their Viking past and historic rivalries. The group meals and accommodations were all excellent. Great trip!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It happened while I was walking after dinner on a coastal trail on Aero island on a beautiful balmy summer night. Fantastic tour! The itinerary was impeccably planned to perfection. Our tour guide, Pal, was the best of the best. He was very knowledgeable, kind, caring, and inclusive. Plus, he always had a special treat for us on the bus--chocolate, fresh berries, licorice, and cinnamon buns. The hotels were in prime locations and of high quality, the included breakfasts were exceptional, and the group dinners allowed us to sample the local cuisine. Fabulous!

our 4th Steves tour......it lived up to the usual great experience. Our guide Asa was fantastic, she had a ton of knowledge about each city and country. She even coordinated her daily dress to match the activity or visit we would experience that day. The showers in the hotels had a lot to improve on......but we understand they were typical European bathrooms. The meal selections were excellent. This Scandinavian trip addded some "firsts" for the trip, all of these new choices were fine.

"Oh-sa", our tour guide, was the most entertaining, creative, fun-loving, well informed guide I've ever had on any of my 4 tours with the Rick Steves tour company. Different stops on this tour. The glass factory and a cheese making stop and I believe a Viking stronghold . The cheese factory and the Viking defense grounds should stsayon the itinerary. I have visited Chihuly in Seattle and Murano Island in Venice so the glass visit wasn't insightful. They did their best to entertain. I danced a lot

Our guide Asa was truly a wonderful guide. She was very known about all aspects of the Scandinavia. She was also very friendly and entertaining- singing and dancing. The sites were well chosen. Going to the glass factory and the brown cheese factory was a special treat as well. The only negative that I have is the shower set up in the hotels. They need to put up hooks to hang your clothes while showering so they don’t get wet. Don’t need the day trip on the fjords- too long

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I loved the Island of Aero, the beauty of elvster, the fjords and Bergen. Copenhagen and Stockholm had so much history. I also loved the fact that they are all trying to decrease the carbon footprint. The food was wonderful- except the herring ??. Our guide, Hakan took us to his home which was a great treat. All our guides were wonderful, friendly and able to paint a wonderful picture of their city. Richard that played HC Anderson was an extra bonus"

The camaraderie and planned and unplanned experiences on this tour were top notch and just as expected from a Rick Steve’s tour. The only reason I give it a “very good” vs. “outstanding “ rating is that the specter of COVID changes things. There isn’t much that can be done about it other than what the RS organization does to mitigate the effects. The tour was affected by two changes of guides due to covid. Initially, a guide was assigned to the tour on very short notice which limited her ability to be fully prepared. The second guide was actually originally assigned to the tour. This change occurred half way through the tour. Further, half the tour member had to leave the tour due to covid. Despite these difficulties, overall the the Very Good, divided between the beginning which was Adequate and the end which was Outstanding.

Our group had a last-minute guide change and ultimately lost 50% of the participants due to COVID. We were able to participate in approximately half the tour. Our guide experience was that we learned less and had a little less color or depth to the bus talks than previous RS tours. To be fair, the guide was very nice and organized and had less than 24 hours notice of this assignment. We felt like there was more bus time on this trip but there was not. We had some great local guides.

Excellent tour experience. This was our first tour with Rick Steve's and we could not have been more satisfied. The accommodations and meals were great. We loved the tour up until my wife and I contracted Covid. We missed the mountains and fjords because of it. There was little to no compliance with RS mask regulations and distancing. "There were SO many! Perhaps that 1/3 of Sweden must be kept green, and that 1% of building costs must go to art, resulting in cultured cities rich in history profuse with gardens, parks, and tree canopied walking paths. "We would rate the ferry ride (2 hours) through Naerofjord as incredible and one of our "wow" moments. The funicular trip up the mountain in Bergen is a close second. It's hard not to also mention having a great time on the island of Aero in Denmark."

It was an ambitious tour and was run exceptionally well. With buses, ferries and 7 different hotels so much could go wrong but it did not. Enjoyed all of it.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I had many. Norway with the mountains and fjords was amazing. Also enjoyed visiting all of the cities, Sweden, Copenhagen, Oslo and Bergen. Beautiful."

I enjoyed the warmth and enthusiasm from Gabriella. Very knowledgeable and told great stories to illustrate the Scandinavian way. By the way, this is Jim Smith, husband of Kathy Smith.

"My favorite moments were in Stockholm and Bergen."

I love everything about the tour. Gabriella was the best guide possible, and the tour was very smooth, interesting, educational and entertaining at the same time.

Our guide, Asa, was informed, professional, creative, and fun. The itinerary worked well and the long bus rides were broken up with regular stops that were interesting: a special bakery, picnic sites, a scenic village, waterfalls. Museums were interesting, the tour group travelled well together.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"This is tough to decide - there are many special moments - but I would say walking along the beach to the little cottages on Aero Island was very memorable."

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements and transfers are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Stockholm (ARN) and out of Bergen (BGO) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Scandinavia.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Scandinavia guidebook.
