Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to Scotland
We'll meet at 4 p.m. at our hotel in Glasgow for a "Welcome to Scotland" get-together. Then we'll take an orientation walk through our neighborhood and get introduced to Glasgow's metro system, before getting acquainted over dinner together.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Glasgow.
Day 2: Cosmopolitan Glasgow
Today our local guide will take us on a walking tour of Scotland's often-overlooked largest city. Famous for its architecture, Glasgow boasts Victorian facades, bold new construction, and beloved works by hometown visionary Charles Rennie Mackintosh — who gave Art Nouveau a Scottish burr. Along the way, we'll learn about the city's history and contemporary life, with stops at Glasgow Cathedral, bustling George Square, and thriving Merchant City. This afternoon you're free to explore Glasgow's world-class museums and the leafy parks of the West End. Tonight, find a local pub and enjoy some live music — trad or mod — in Scotland's music capital.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Glasgow.
Day 3: Stirling Castle
We'll begin our day with a visit to the famous castle of the Stuart kings, Stirling, with its commanding views and royal apartments. After lunch we'll drive along the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond on our way to the scenic coastal town of Oban, the "Gateway to the Isles." After an orientation along Oban's scenic waterfront, dinner can be easily found in Scotland's seafood capital.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Oban.
Day 4: Inspiring Isle of Iona
Today is for Scottish island-hopping: We'll ride a ferry and board a local bus for an entertaining trip across the island of Mull to the windswept Isle of Iona, the birthplace of Christianity in Scotland. We'll visit the 800-year-old abbey where monks created the remarkable Book of Kells — a rare bright spot in Europe's Dark Ages. We'll then set you free to explore or find a spot to meditate on this tiny, spiritually charged island. We'll return to Oban, and our own century, in time for dinner.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Boat: 2 hours. Sleep in Oban.
Day 5: Seaside Oban
Take a vacation from your vacation. Today is yours to hike up to McCaig's Tower for a sweeping harbor view, visit the ruined Dunollie Castle and its museum, take an excursion to Staffa to see the famed puffins, or just sit seaside and watch the sun set over the islands. However you spend your day, Oban is the perfect place to relax and drink in the best of the Scottish seaside.
Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No Bus. Sleep in Oban.
Day 6: Into the Highlands
This morning we'll head north into the rugged Highlands, stopping at the "weeping glen" of Glencoe — the hauntingly beautiful site of Scotland's most infamous massacre (Campbells and MacDonalds, leave your daggers on the bus). We'll continue through fabled scenery, where we will visit the evocative ruins of Urquhart Castle. After exploring its stony towers and expansive lake view, we'll take a panoramic cruise of Loch Ness (monster sightings not guaranteed). Then it's onto the capital of the Highlands, Inverness, where we'll take an orientation walk along the River Ness. Tonight is a great opportunity to enjoy some traditional music in one of Inverness' many fun-loving pubs.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Boat: 1 hour. Sleep in Inverness.
Day 7: Battle of Culloden
Today we'll tour the powerful Culloden Battlefield — the "Scottish Alamo," where Bonnie Prince Charlie's defeat in 1746 marked the beginning of the end of the Highland clan system. The remainder of the day is yours to explore Inverness' pedestrian-friendly downtown or stroll the lovely parks and promenades along the banks of the River Ness. Following an afternoon on your own, we'll share dinner together.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 1 hour. Sleep in Inverness.
Day 8: Speyside Whisky and the Cairngorms
Today we'll drive through Speyside, famous for producing Scotland's favorite drink: whisky, of course. We'll tour a whisky distillery to sample a wee dram and get the inside story on this iconic Scottish industry. After a quintessential Scottish lunch together, we'll visit Rothiemurchus, a Highland estate at the heart of Cairngorms National Park with one of the largest areas of natural forest in Britain. With a ranger as our guide, we'll learn of land and animal conservation efforts, including "hairy coos" (shaggy Highland cattle) and red deer.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in a village in the Cairngorms National Park.
Day 9: Sheepdogs and Bagpipes
We'll begin our day at a working sheep farm, where we'll watch talented sheepdogs in action and learn about Scotland's wool industry. After free time for lunch, your guide will take you to their favorite stop along what's known as the spine of Scotland. This evening, we'll enjoy dinner together and meet a Scottish bagpiper for some music and a lesson on this unusual instrument's history.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Perthshire.
Day 10: Prehistoric Crannogs
This morning we're off to the picturesque village of Dunkeld on the River Tay, where we'll tour the town and and its medieval cathedral with a local guide. After some free time for lunch and to poke around town, we're off to learn about the Iron Age people who first farmed these lands and built Scotland's unique crannogs — prehistoric, thatched-roofed defensive huts built on piers out over the lochs. We'll regroup this evening for dinner together.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Perthshire.
Day 11: St. Andrews
We'll begin today with a visit to St. Andrews, Scotland's oldest university town and a mecca for golfers worldwide. You'll have time to explore the ruins of St. Andrews' medieval cathedral, watch duffers playing the Old Course — considered the birthplace of golf — and enjoy lunch. Then we'll cross the famous Firth of Forth on our way into Edinburgh. After settling into our hotel, we'll take an orientation walk of Georgian Edinburgh, before setting you free for dinner on your own.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Edinburgh.
Day 12: Conquering Edinburgh
Today we'll wind our way through the Gothic streets of Edinburgh's old town, seeing the best of the city on foot. Our walking tour will take us up the Royal Mile — with its wealth of historic buildings, quaint shops, narrow lanes, and hidden courtyards — then onto Grassmarket and Greyfriars Cemetery. This afternoon, visit imposing Edinburgh Castle (entry ticket provided) at your leisure to see the Scottish Crown Jewels and Stone of Scone and to soak up the dramatic views from this military stronghold and birthplace of the city. Tonight, we'll share memories of Scotland and toast new friends at our final dinner together. Slàinte!
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Edinburgh.
Day 13: Tour Over After Breakfast
Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Edinburgh's airport and train station are easy connections from our neighborhood. Glasgow is one hour away by train; London is 90 minutes by air. For those tempted to continue their trip, Edinburgh is a great jumping-off point to Paris, Dublin, Amsterdam, and many other exciting destinations. Turas math dhut! (Happy travels!)

I generally enjoyed the tour, our guide Jim was helpful and attentive. The trip was too long, too short in Glasgow and Edinburgh and too long in Oban and Inverness. Views of Glencoe and the tour of Culloden were excellent. Hotels were adequate, although the last in Edinburgh was hampered by no elevator but Dunkeld was impressive.

I had not visited Scotland before, and there were places on the itinerary I would not have thought to visit independently. Never a fan of bagpipes, I enjoyed the school band performances in the town of Oban, as well as the visit from Gilly, who is both a good performer and a gifted raconteur. I often find the things I would not have done myself to be the most enjoyable.
Favorite "WOW" moment
"The border collies herding performance and the hairy coo calf at the farm visit were what I most wanted to see. The experience did not disappoint. "

We thoroughly enjoyed wandering Scotland with Jim. We saw a good variety of the country (urban and rural) and experienced much of the local scene. The pace was wonderful. No one dropped into bed at the end of the day exhausted but we definitely saw a great deal. We miss our fellow travelers now that we are at home which is a sign of a great time had by all.

"The ferry from Oban to Iona was simply spectacular. Perfect weather (we saw several seasons that day but nothing oppressive) and we've never seen so many shades of green! Such beautiful scenery. We would love to further explore the Inner & Outer Hebrides. Another big surprise was the quality of the food. We did not expect some of the best meals we have ever experienced to be in Scotland but were so pleasantly surprised!"

I loved seeing so many different parts of Scotland in one tour. It was great to have the itinerary planned out, and to just show up ready to go. I really loved having local guides, who made each tour more personal and special.

"Driving through Glencoe was absolutely stunning. We stopped at a viewpoint to take in the gorgeous scenery, and were surprised by a local playing the bagpipes. It was totally coincidental that he was there, but hearing the pipes in the Highlands was something I will never forget."

Weather was a bit dicey; very unpredictable (and sometimes dramatic) changes. Good itinerary, but I think not including the Isle of Skye is disappointing (though I think I understand why it is not included). As always, one learns a great deal about Scotland on a Rick Steves tour; and I always appreciate being treated as a mature, intelligent adult. Three days in Oban may be one too many.

"An optional activity while staying in Oban. A group of us took a short ferry from there to the island of Kererra, a small sparsely populated island of the Inner Hebrides. We climbed into the Gylen Castle which was built in 1587, had amazing views of the ocean. Such a tranquil place. There is a tea room about 2 miles along the hike that was so welcoming and delightful. I think the guide was amazing but the cleanliness and the quality of the hotels was questionable. Our first hotel that we stayed in was horrible. It was not clean, several of us suspected mold and it was below the standard of what was expected. I know you have a service now booking the hotels and I am not sure if you are cutting costs but it def. influenced my decision to take another trip. I have taken 4 thus far and by far this was the worst. I would discuss with the co. you hired.

The tour overall met my expectations. I love hearing about the history and culture of places I am visiting as well as controversial politics - historical and current. "It is hard to pick just one wow experience. I have 3 that stand out. I loved the Isle of Iona especially the peaceful setting - walking to the beach as well as sitting in the afternoon meditation and scripture reading. I also loved the free day as we were able to get over to the small Isle of Kerrera. The hike to the ruined castle and a lunch stop in the middle of "nowhere" was wonderful and relaxing. The third was enjoying local musicians at a pub in Dunkeld. Fun to visit with locals!"

From start to finish, this tour and services were outstanding. Weeks before day 1 our 1st Hotel was changed; we appreciated that our "pre-tour" night reservation was smoothly transitioned to the new property. Specialist guides, and our R/S guides were exceptional as was our bus driver! I felt the itinerary of daily group activities mixed with some unscheduled time to explore on our own worked well, including the "vacation from our vacation" day. Only regret is that the Kelpies weren't included.

" I loved the beautiful landscapes with water everywhere, and sheep dotted hills; ewes and baby lambs cuddling in the shade. The Sheepdog demonstration, chance to help shear a sheep, and bottle feed a lamb were a thrill. And who doesn't love meeting a "Hairy Coo" or two!!! Kudos to our female bagpiper for an awesome demonstration !! "

A thoughtfully assembled tour that provided an intimate experience of Scotland's diverse cities, gorgeous highlands and lochs, cultural treasures and sometimes heartbreaking history. Scotland is a beautiful country with friendly people. As expected from a RSE tour, the tour guides are the strength of the tour. Our tour guide Anne was wonderful, very knowledgeable, organized and pleasant. The hotels were the weakest part of an otherwise very nice trip. The one in Oban in particular was very in a poor condition and should not be acceptable by RSE standards. The hotels in Glasgow and Dunkeld were the exception as they were pretty nice.

"Hiking in Kerrera island to the ruined Gylen castle was wonderful. St Andrews and Edinburgh were charming but unfortunately we didn’t get the chance to spend enough time there. I had an amazing time. I'd read the details regarding the tour well in advance and it was everything I expected. Our guide, Alistair, was very entertaining and knowledgeable, I couldn't say enough positive things to describe him. Once again the website was descriptive in what to and what not to expect at the hotels. The funniest thing I encountered was the necessity of asking for ice. It was unusually warm in Scotland and became a little stuffy in a few hotels but nothing unbearable.

Our guide was incredible. Knowledgeable, friendly and kind. He was instrumental in making this a great tour. He helped me learn Scottish culture and history. I came home feeling like I had really experienced Scotland. And I came home wanting to learn more. I’ve read two books since I’ve been home on Scottish history. I also appreciated being on a smaller tour. Our bus driver was also great. I was on a tour once where the driver got lost a few times and it cost us precious tour time.

This was our 2nd RS Tour and it was just as great as the 1st. Nigel is a great guide, his knowledge and background was so beneficial to learn about this wonderful country. His bartending ability with the whiskey sampling was unparrelled, As we are avid Bourbon drinkers gaining knowledge of the whiskey was an added bonus. The cities and towns we saw and driving through the glens and valleys was breathtaking. Steve our bus driver did an exceptional job driving down the one lane roads was unreal.

"There were a few WOW moments both with the tour and prior to the tour on our own. The Palace of Holyrood House was spectacular which we did on our own before the tour began. We also went to Inverary Castle which walking into the Central Hall took my breath away. On the tour the drive through beautiful Glencoe valley was amazing and the visit to Culloden was somber and thought provoking just realizing what took place there. "

Scotland is such a beautiful country with interesting history and very friendly people. Nigel was a great guide, he gave us lots of information that helped me better appreciate each area we visited. Local guides were also very good. We had a nice group of fellow travelers and great weather so in all a fun trip. My only complaint is the group size of 29 was too big. The website says small groups-24 to 28 max, but many tours this year are larger than that. Doesnt feel like a small group.

No AC and stairs, put the packing light to the test.

"Can't really say there was just one WOW moment as Glencoe, Ben Nevis, Culloden, Cairngorms was just too beautiful to put in words. The first was not part of tour and we did on our own and it was at Inveraray Castle going into the Central Hall and seeing all of the guns used at Culloden. This should be part of the tour, we stopped in the town on the way to Oban so there wasn't really time with the itinerary, definitely need a few hours."

Highlights: Tour guide knowledge & scheduling of the day's events. Well chosen sites. Disappointments: Tired hotels, can't classify as "European Quaint." Vacation from our vacation at the beginning of a tour - Oban - was poorly timed. Break should be mid-tour. Little to do in Oban. Possibly a group option on the free day? Guide didn't offer hidden surprises; had to find these on our own. Poor scheduling of group meals. 29 people, too many. Expensive; some weak local guides.Rushed at Sterling.

Our RS guidebook helped us maximize our free time, discovering fabulous museums, gardens and river walks. We had been wanting to visit Scotland for years but it kept getting put off. We had two RS tours cancel on us, and were offered first "dibs" on our choice as a result. And Scotland it was! This was our 7th RS tour. We had the most wonderful group this time. Newbies and veterans alike, including a young woman who was a breath of fresh air! We were lucky to have two full-time guides: James, who was a true veteran, immensely experienced and capable, and Maureen, an apprentice who was fabulous.

The tour offered a wonderful trip around the urban/rural, highlands/lowlands parts of this beautiful country. The knowledge of our guide, Nigel, and all the local guides, shared with generous doses of Scottish humor, made learning about the history and culture of Scotland quite entertaining. Unfortunately, losing 10 of our original 28 tour members to Covid resulted in a lower level of camaraderie than is customary on Rick Steves tours.

"My wow moment was actually on our off day in Oban. It happened to be King Charles' coronation day and I stumbled upon an Episcopal Cathedral that was live streaming the coronation. The host congregation was very welcoming, serving tea and light refreshments and offering a punch toast after the actual crowning. Singing along with the hymns and joining in on the prayers in the Oban Cathedral as we watched the ceremony in Westminster Abbey was a delightful once in a lifetime experience."

The Scotland tour was a "stew" of many ingredients made perfect by the two most important spices; Ian the bus driver and James the guide. They made it all worthwhile. James contributed his deeply respectful connection to his homeland and Ian had a jovial personality that kept us all laughing - to endure the long bus rides I'm sure.

It was exciting to experience the beautiful country of Scotland, and our tour guide James did an outstanding job of sharing his country with us. Ian and Richard, our bus drivers, also did a great job of transporting us and keeping us entertained. This was our first major trip since before covid, so we had some reservations about traveling internationally. I feel RST did everything in their power to keep us safe and informed. Communication and flexibility were a priority of James as we traveled.

"The Highlands were my favorite part of the country. Being at Glencoe and hearing/learning the history of the area were very meaningful. Being on the Culloden battlefield and seeing the museum. Neal and his sheepdogs working was fantastic (and also learning from him about the farm being owned by the laird and he being the tenant). Also loved traveling down the coast road from the north toward Edinburgh, where we saw the North Sea, stopping in Pittenweem and toasting our tour with wee drams."

The sites visited, the hotels and food were excellent. This was only enhanced further by the excellent tour guide. The wide range of experiences were wonderful from lochs to hiking up hills to visiting monastaries along with the experience of Glasgow and Endinburgh. The only negative was the relative lassaiz-faire attitude towards COVID, by tour members and the lack of consistant mask wearing when members were not on the bus. This may have contributed to the positive tests throughout the tour.

"The overall physical beauty of the entire country (less the garbage strike in Glasgow), coupled with the unexpected beautiful weather! The ocean views, Iona and the highlands all presented different faces of Scotland, but all were breathtaking. Both Glasgow and Edinburgh were impressive in their own ways."

The tour was terrific, although we had to leave a few behind due to COVID. Our leader, Julia, was not only organized and specific in her directions, she easily rolled with the group losses. In addition she enriched the tour with her talents in singing in the chapel at Iona and fiddle playing as we walked in a forest near Dunkeld and Birnam Wood. I now appreciate Scotland's rich history and have a feel for the Highlands' rolling hills as well as the Lowlands' cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh.

"There were several wow moments - absorbing the tragedies which occurred at Glencoe and Culloden was emotional for sure, but for me visiting the islands of Mull and Iona were the top wow moments. Our Mull bus driver, Richard, was very informative and clearly loved his job and where he lives. Iona was a magical place rich in history, a place for reflection and solo walks. "

My first tour, spectacular. Group size was intimate so there was a lot of camaraderie and sharing right from the start. So glad that you expanded the tour to 13 days. Julia, our guide, was genuine and warm and helped us all to experience the Scotland she so clearly loves. This tour emphasizes rural life; the flora and fauna, villages, seaside towns and islands, geology and how the country has been shaped over the millennia. I loved this. You can have your palaces and cathedrals; I'll take a red deer eating from my hand, cuddling a sheepdog puppy or admiring a spectacular sunset from Oban harbor any day.

"Has to be looking out over the other-worldly landscape of Glencoe while listening to a busker pipe The Skye Boat Song. Runners up: local guide Richard's narration as we drove the length of Mull, admiring shepherd Neil's sheepdogs as they followed his voice and whistle commands, chatting with the very friendly Scottish people in shops and pubs, learning of the death of Queen Elizabeth while just down the road from Balmoral, befriending several enthusiastic and interesting fellow travelers. We had a great tour guide in Liz Lister. She was very organized, knowledgeable and kind. We started in Glasgow and it was interesting, but we were anxious to get out of the big city and see the rest of Scotland. Liz really helped us to understand the highlights of Scottish history and bring our locations into context. The Highlands are stunning and I felt at home

This is a new itinerary for RSE, I think. Overall, it was very good - good mix of history, beauty of nature, "experiences" like the Cooperage, the sheepdogs, and the Crannog, and cities/towns/architecture/museums, etc. It DID feel rushed though, almost every step of the way. Scottish highlands can best be described as hauntingly beautiful. Any tour is a compromise and I understand that no tour can satisfy everyone, every time. Most of the hotels were fine and in the case of the Loch Brannoch Hotel, wonderful. The one exception was the Duke of Gordon Hotel, it was, in a word, squalid. I would have skipped Iona and substituted Skye in its stead but that is my preference. Julia was wonderful as a guide and Ian the bus driver was a courteous and careful driver.

This tour lived up to its "best-of" label. It included the major cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh, smaller towns like Oban and Inverness, the southern edge of the Highlands, and rural areas as well. It covers a lot of ground. Our tour leader was wonderful and added greatly to our understanding of Scottish history and current issues. She was so thoughtful and we enjoyed sampling Scottish treats. The landscape was beautiful.

"The incredible beauty of Scotland was on display everywhere but one of my favorite moments was walking up to the castle ruins in Oban with my daughter and two of our tour friends after dinner. It was magical."

We had heard so much in the media about the difficulties of travel this summer but our tour went flawlessly. Liz lister was an amazing guide, the sites/events occurred without any difficulties, and our fellow travelers were delightful. This was a true Rick Steves experience.
Favorite "WOW" moment
"I don’t have a favorite moment - each day provided at least one memory that I will not forget. I loved the combination of “not to miss” sites with smaller “out of the way” experiences known only to locals or very knowledgeable guides. "

Excellent trip, incredible tour guide, enjoyable group of fellow travelers, nice blend of standard tourist "must see" sites and experiences mixed with smaller, less well known venues. I wouldn't have changed anything we did. Because of media reports we were worried about traveling this summer, but the whole trip went flawlessly.
Favorite "WOW" moment
"I didn't have one wow moment. I had a highlight each day that will stay with me, and they are often the smaller, less well advertised experiences we had. I loved Kilmartin, walking the river in Inverness, the Hermitage, the folk museum(s), Iona, etc...."

This 13-day tour of Scotland was outstanding. Our guide Liz Lister was incredibly knowledgeable, kind and went out of her way to address everyone's needs and interests. She is a national treasure for Scotland! I feel like we came away with a greater understanding of Scottish people, landscapes, culture and history.

"There were so many wonderful moments but I would say driving through the Highlands and visiting Glencoe with its haunting and majestic beauty were at the top of my list."

"Stopping at Glencoe, driving by and seeing the scenery and then stepping off the bus in the drizzle. Seeing the beauty of the area was breathtaking. "

When To Go & Weather
Any time between April and October is a good time to visit Scotland. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for combining the convenience of peak season with generally good weather and lighter crowds. While Scotland never quite feels crowded, July and August are considered peak season, with long days and the best weather (though never guaranteed).

Tour Hotels
In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights
Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements and transfers are completely up to you.
Most tour members arrange to fly into Glasgow (GLA) and out of Edinburgh (EDI) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Alternatively, Glasgow and Edinburgh are less than an hour apart by train. You could choose to fly roundtrip to/from one of the cities and then take a train between Glasgow and Edinburgh.
We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Scotland guidebook.
