Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Scotland

We'll meet at 4 p.m. at our hotel in Glasgow for a "Welcome to Scotland" get-together. Then we'll take an orientation walk through our neighborhood and get introduced to Glasgow's metro system, before getting acquainted over dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Glasgow.

Day 2: Cosmopolitan Glasgow

Today our local guide will take us on a walking tour of Scotland's often-overlooked largest city. Famous for its architecture, Glasgow boasts Victorian facades, bold new construction, and beloved works by hometown visionary Charles Rennie Mackintosh — who gave Art Nouveau a Scottish burr. Along the way, we'll learn about the city's history and contemporary life, with stops at Glasgow Cathedral, bustling George Square, and thriving Merchant City. This afternoon you're free to explore Glasgow's world-class museums and the leafy parks of the West End. Tonight, find a local pub and enjoy some live music — trad or mod — in Scotland's music capital.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Glasgow.

Day 3: Stirling Castle

We'll begin our day with a visit to the famous castle of the Stuart kings, Stirling, with its commanding views and royal apartments. After lunch we'll drive along the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond on our way to the scenic coastal town of Oban, the "Gateway to the Isles." After an orientation along Oban's scenic waterfront, dinner can be easily found in Scotland's seafood capital.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Oban.

Day 4: Inspiring Isle of Iona

Today is for Scottish island-hopping: We'll ride a ferry and board a local bus for an entertaining trip across the island of Mull to the windswept Isle of Iona, the birthplace of Christianity in Scotland. We'll visit the 800-year-old abbey where monks created the remarkable Book of Kells — a rare bright spot in Europe's Dark Ages. We'll then set you free to explore or find a spot to meditate on this tiny, spiritually charged island. We'll return to Oban, and our own century, in time for dinner.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Boat: 2 hours. Sleep in Oban.

Day 5: Seaside Oban

Take a vacation from your vacation. Today is yours to hike up to McCaig's Tower for a sweeping harbor view, visit the ruined Dunollie Castle and its museum, take an excursion to Staffa to see the famed puffins, or just sit seaside and watch the sun set over the islands. However you spend your day, Oban is the perfect place to relax and drink in the best of the Scottish seaside.

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No Bus. Sleep in Oban.

Day 6: Into the Highlands

This morning we'll head north into the rugged Highlands, stopping at the "weeping glen" of Glencoe — the hauntingly beautiful site of Scotland's most infamous massacre (Campbells and MacDonalds, leave your daggers on the bus). We'll continue through fabled scenery, where we will visit the evocative ruins of Urquhart Castle. After exploring its stony towers and expansive lake view, we'll take a panoramic cruise of Loch Ness (monster sightings not guaranteed). Then it's onto the capital of the Highlands, Inverness, where we'll take an orientation walk along the River Ness. Tonight is a great opportunity to enjoy some traditional music in one of Inverness' many fun-loving pubs.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Boat: 1 hour. Sleep in Inverness.

Day 7: Battle of Culloden

Today we'll tour the powerful Culloden Battlefield — the "Scottish Alamo," where Bonnie Prince Charlie's defeat in 1746 marked the beginning of the end of the Highland clan system. The remainder of the day is yours to explore Inverness' pedestrian-friendly downtown or stroll the lovely parks and promenades along the banks of the River Ness. Following an afternoon on your own, we'll share dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 1 hour. Sleep in Inverness.

Day 8: Cairngorms National Park

Today we'll drive through Speyside, famous for its natural beauty and producing Scotland's favorite drink: whisky, on our way to Rothiemurchus, a Highland estate at the heart of Cairngorms National Park. With a ranger as our guide, we'll learn about one of the largest areas of natural forest in Britain and animal conservation efforts, including "hairy coos" (shaggy Highland cattle) and red deer. We'll enjoy lunch together featuring local produce from neighboring farms, followed by an afternoon stroll through the estate's diverse woodlands. This evening, we'll settle into our hotel at a village in the park and share dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in a village in the Cairngorms National Park.

Day 9: Sheepdogs, Whisky, and Bagpipes

We'll begin our day at a working sheep farm, where we'll watch talented sheepdogs in action and learn about Scotland's wool industry. Then we'll stop at a local whisky distillery to get the inside story about this iconic Scottish tradition and sample a wee dram or two. After free time for lunch, your guide will take you to their favorite stop along what's known as the spine of Scotland. This evening, we'll meet a Scottish bagpiper for some music and a lesson on this unusual instrument's history.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Perthshire.

Day 10: Prehistoric Crannogs

This morning we're off to the picturesque village of Dunkeld on the River Tay, where we'll tour the town and its medieval cathedral with a local guide. After some free time to poke around town, we're off to learn about the Iron Age people who first farmed these lands and built Scotland's unique crannogs — prehistoric, thatched-roofed defensive huts built on piers out over the lochs. We'll regroup this evening for dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Perthshire.

Day 11: St. Andrews and Edinburgh

We'll begin today with a visit to St. Andrews, Scotland's oldest university town and a mecca for golfers worldwide. You'll have time to explore the ruins of St. Andrews' medieval cathedral, watch duffers playing the Old Course — considered the birthplace of golf — and enjoy lunch. Then we'll cross the famous Firth of Forth on our way into Edinburgh, where we'll wind our way through the Gothic streets of the old town, seeing the best of the city on foot. Our walking tour will take us up the Royal Mile — with its wealth of historic buildings, narrow lanes, and hidden courtyards — then onto Grassmarket and Greyfriars Cemetery. We'll set you free in Edinburgh's vibrant historical center with plenty of options to find dinner on your own.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Edinburgh.

Day 12: Conquering Edinburgh Castle

This morning we'll make our way to the imposing Edinburgh Castle, where we'll explore this iconic hillside fort and royal residence complete with Scottish crown jewels, a Romanesque chapel, and dramatic views of the city. Tonight, we'll share memories of Scotland and toast new friends at our final dinner together. Slàinte!

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Edinburgh.

Day 13: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Edinburgh's airport and train station are easy connections from our neighborhood. Glasgow is one hour away by train; London is 90 minutes by air. For those tempted to continue their trip, Edinburgh is a great jumping-off point to Paris, Dublin, Amsterdam, and many other exciting destinations. Turas math dhut! (Happy travels!)

This was our first Rick Steves tour - overall, excellent, we're already planning our next Rick Steves tour for 2025. Nigel, the tour guide, has excellent knowledge of each area visited on the tour, and is an excellent communicator of that information. Excellent tour destinations - some a bit hurried, such as the visit to the island of Iona, because lots of sea + land travel involved. But better to have that experience on a somewhat hurried timeframe than not to do it at all. Great tour!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"A favorite experience was during an afternoon off from the tour: Wife and I arranged a guided tour of the Oban whisky distillery in Oban, a stop along the tour route. Very interesting to see how whisky is made, and taste a variety of Oban whisky products. The whisky tour that was part of the formal Rick Steves itinerary failed - it turned out that the distillery manufacturing area was closed on the day of our visit. So we were talked at for 30 minutes, no tour, then tastings. Disappointing."

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Alasdair Donald MacDonald. I have been on 17 Rick Steves tours and I must say I have seen Wow moments, places and things. But this is the first time I would say my Wow is a person. Alasdair brought to life his country and treated his guests to a phenomenal time. From his reading of Robbie Burns, “To a Mouse,” to filling in the gaps of a whiskey tour, his knowledge and ability to convey his pride and love of the land of bagpipes, whiskey and sheepdogs was definitely a wow. I am so glad."

We aren't usually group tour people, so we struggled some with mandatory meeting times and early mornings. We wanted more time, for instance, at Stirling Castle and surrounding area. But we greatly appreciated the breadth and depth of knowledge of our guide, as well as the wide variety of things we got to see and do.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Battle of Culloden historic site. I've never been all that excited about war history or troop movements, but our guide at the site - Bertie, was excellent. She pulled us in to the tensions and physical stresses of the combatants. Her description of the highland charge was compelling, and at the end of the tour, I was saddened by the deaths of so many valiant Scots highlanders. "

This was my 7th Rick Steves tour, and the Best of Scotland ranks as one of the top two. The quality, experience and character of the overall tour guide, the knowledge of the individual city and site guides, the variety of experiences we were provided, the beauty of the landscapes we visited, the friendly people we shared time with, and the wonderful seafood and other meals all led to a fabulous experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I went into the tour with limited knowledge of Oban, so I really didn't know what to expect at that town. Oban was a wonderful seaside village to explore, the RS tour ferry trip to the Isles of Mull and and Iona were beautiful and well-planned, and our separately booked side trip to experience the birds and geological features of Isles of Staffa and Lungs were magical!"

This was my 1st Rick Steve's tour and I have little to compare to other vacations I have take in the past with River Cruises, Mediterranean Cruises and an Alaska cruise. From the big cities of the lowlands, to the picturesque highlands, we enjoyed every minute.

Our guide, Alisdair, was such a wealth of knowledge. He made this tour a wonderful experience. We enjoyed the group and were very satisfied with our 8th Rick Steves tour!

As usual with RS tours, the guides were very good, and our tour guide Charlie was outstanding - very enthusiastic and informative, plus she gave us lots of treats (biscuits and candy). My fellow travelers were very nice people, cooperative, didn't complain (except when we all complained a little when hot rooms did not have fans), and interesting. Scotland was lovely.

I thought my first Rick Steves tour was top notch!! Our guide Charlie, each person that led us through a city, activity, or landmark was absolutely a wealth of knowledge and so kind. I didn’t quite know what to expect with a group of 26 other tour members but by the end it felt like we were the best of friends and people we plan on connecting with and visiting. Scotland was stunning, the people were amazing, and our stay could not have been better!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite wow moment was a combination of the weeping glen (Glencoe) and the Isles of Mull and Iona. Mull and Iona had waters as blue as the Mediterranean with history that was so moving and inspirational. Glencoe was beautiful with the three sisters but the knowledge of the bloodshed between the Campbells and McDonalds made it that much more humbling."

Touring Scotland in 13 days was an adventure of a lifetime for us. We saw very relevant sights and learned interesting historical facts along the way. Most ways of life were explored from the major cities to the sheep ranch. From the Islands off west coast to the shores of the North Sea on the east. Touring ancient ruins to Whisky distillery to Cairngorms national park. We believe we got to experience the heartbeat of Scotland in many different ways.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"For my husband, it was the very first Cathedral, Glasgow Cathedral- and the fact it took hundreds of years to finish, the enormity and workmanship, and being able to walk the grounds and admire the overwhelming presence. For me it was when our guide James sang in the small sanctuary at the abbey on Iona. I was overcome with the sense and sound, thinking how it must have been when the monks were practicing there so very long ago. The simplicity of life on the island, the scenery were beautiful."

James was a fantastic guide. He really loves the Hebrides. Someone so proud of his homeland makes me want to live there. The days were sometimes long (especially the guided tour of Edinburgh. So many steps!), but the sights and experiences were top notch. We met some really nice people on the tour, and in Scotland in general.

Favorite "WOW" moment

As a multiple Rick Steves Tour alumni, I have high expectations. For the most part they were met, the hotels were good but could have been a little more centrally located, especially Edinburgh. More focus on Scottish culture like explaining kilts, the different tartans for each clan, Harris tweed, etc. Too much time spent on the Jacobites.

I feel that the itinerary could be changed. The trip to Iona took the whole day to get there, then most places had already stopped serving food but the time we were set free. The day visiting the crannogs didn’t seem to be appealing to most. We all ended up smelling like smoke from the campfires and when you have to wear your clothes multiple days, this was unappealing. The hotel in Edinburgh was a distance from the things we needed to see and it limited people’s interest in trying to go out.

"On our free day in Oban, we took the water taxi to Kerrera. We hiked out to the castle - about 10.5 miles and it took most of the day. It was a beautiful hike - new born lambs greeted us everywhere. The coastal scenery was gorgeous. There was a tasty little tea house for a break before we went on the spur to the castle. The castle view was stunning. We loved the peaceful hike and everyone on the island we talked to were lovely. It was a great day! "

We got a taste of so many parts of Scotland: architecture, history, landscape, seafood to haggis, whisky, music, lush countryside, and some of the most engaging and friendly local people. Our guide and coachman were both outstanding. And we always enjoy time spent with some wonderful people on our Rick Steves tours. With each successive tour experience, I think we are getting better at traveling well.

Best 1st trip to Scotland! This was my very first trip abroad and was my 25th wedding anniversary. We had met people that traveled with the RS company and now I know why you have repeat travelers. This was a well oiled machine evidenced by the itinerary. Arrivals to hotels were seamless, drivers outstanding, Nigel was greater than incredible and local guides, shepherd, falconer excellent. It was a delight to experience and learn about a country that I knew very little about. Anne was a wonderful raconteur with a marvelous sense of humor and we learned so much about Scotland’s history and its people. The weather was amazingly beautiful - sunny every day and everywhere! This tour was more than I expected.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There was more than one but perhaps the pristine, wild highlands and the fauna - hairy coos, falconry and sheep herding. But the trip to Iona was also wonderful and Culloden was a moving experience. One serendipitous event occurred on the ferry to Mull: a men’s choir from Norway was seated all around me and when the boat started out, all the men started singing sea chantiers. They were on their way to the Abbey of St. Colomba on Iona to give a concert. It was a beautiful experience to hear them."

Our 5th Rick Steves Tour and it was outstanding like all the others! There was lots of countryside to visit, mountains, seaside towns and islands, castles, Loch Lomond and Loch Ness (no, we didn't see Nessie!), quaint little towns, and big towns of Glasgow, Inverness, and Edinburgh. Our guide Nigel was knowledgable and funny, a good leader and kept us interested all the time. April was a great time of year to visit, chilly but not so rainy. Another memorable tour with great fellow travelers.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Several favorite "wow" moments - Stirling Castle, Edinburgh (always a delight to visit), the ferry ride to the Isle of Iona to visit the Abbey, the Hieland Hairy Coos, the ski lift in the mist to the top of the mountain and to be treated with a wee nip of Scottish whiskey! The bagpipe demo by Gillie up close and personal. And all of the side trips to visit historical places and see sights we might have missed otherwise on our own (Neil and his sheep dogs!). The trips are a delight!"

We had a great time! Scotland was awesome and we loved the country and people. My one major complaint was that we didn’t really get into the highlands. Didn’t get to Isle of Skye or north of Loch Ness. I asked Nigel about this and he said that they couldn’t get accommodations. Understandable, but seems like a solvable problem. The Best of Scotland was our first tour ever and it far exceeded our expectations. We chose it because we did not feel up to driving on the other side of the road, but also because I could not meet the hotel prices independently. Our fellow tour goers were remarkably well matched, and better yet, our guide was outstanding He was really excelllent.

Our tour guide was a walking history encyclopedia and we got our fill of past events, dates, names of prominent figures, more than anyone could absorb. The positive aspects of the tour were overshadowed with the fact that many of us ended up contracting Covid upon arriving home and/or during the tour. We had a tour member who started out the tour ill and he was not consistent about wearing a mask and taking precautions to preserve the health of the group. We had a wonderful group! Our guides both local and our main guide were entertaining and extremely informative. The beauty of Scotland and it’s people is undeniable.

tour did not meet our expectations. group events were disappointing - and started at the first day. rushed introductions - terrible first dinner where we sat separated at 8 different tables with poor service and poor food. 29 too many for one guide. Covid was allowed to spread - folks came to tour hot and no one was asked to test - even those coughing on the Covid coach. we lost 1/3 of group. Oban Royal Hotel bad. Once off tour excommunicated - not even to share emails. Rude.

Overall, I was disappointed in this tour. I often felt rushed at our destinations. We just arrived at our location, and we had to find a place to eat lunch, actually get seated and served, and eat, and it left little time to explore the area. Our hotels were rundown. I don't mind old, or a place with character, but the carpets often appeared dirty, and wallpaper was peeling in one location. Our bonding as a group was not adequate. Ten people had to leave due to Covid. I was one of those.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I did not have a "Wow" moment on this tour. I enjoyed Oban, (other than the hotel), and our trip to Iona and the Abbey. Our walking tour of Glasgow with our local guide, Jenny, was fun and informative. I enjoyed the shepherding demonstration, and the Stirling castle tour. I liked the wildness of Glencoe. Everything was too rushed, and not enough time in most spots to explore. "

Lots of interesting historical facts and picturesque sights worthy of many photo ops! Guide, Anne added to the fun with thought-provoking stories, "back of the coach" tasty food and drink tastings, and toe-tapping traditional music. Expert Scottish driver, Steve, safely traversed the narrow roadways with confidence and a smile. Tour guides in Glasgow, Stirling Castle and Edinburgh added to this spectacular Scottish tour.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Being a golfer, St. Andrews was my WOW moment. Being able to talk with actual caddies and players and learning the history of golf was informative. All of the artifacts, information and displays in the World Golf Museum were top notch! Definitely earned a PAR for this stop on the tour. "

Overall the experience was great, guide was exceptional and well informed about the country. Bus driver was courteous and drove our bus with great care, he was awesome. A couple of hotels weren’t up to I would put anyone’s standard, especially the one in Oban Scotland, old and very tired would be a compliment, 3 days here “ not acceptable “ The last hotel of the tour in Edinburgh was ok but climbing the four flights of stairs because the elevator was broke “ for the summer

Overall the entire tour was awesome! Helen was amazing. Her knowledge was incredible. Such a sweet soul. We did however have one water incident at the best Hotel of the trip. This was in the Dunkeld House Hotel on day 9. We were awakened at 3:00 AM by the sound of dripping and our bed was soaked. I called the front desk and they were there in minutes to move us to a new room. We had to pack up our belongings. They also reported back that the water was coming from the toilet above us.

"After hearing the story of what happened in Glencoe, we went up to the three sisters in the highlands and they took my breath away and to top it off, a person in full highland garb began playing Amazing Grace on the Bagpipes. The tears were relentless. Very touching moment. Then of course there was my dream to see the Old Course At St . Andrews and our driver, Ian had booked the putting course for myself and 2 others. So I guess I can say, "I played St. Andrews!""

The tour through Scotland was very well organized. Enjoyed all the sights and cities. As first timers to a Rick Steve tour we enjoyed spending time with our fantastic guide Nigel and our merry band of travelers. Scotland was fantastic. The people were friendly and helpful. The food was amazing. The history and soul of Scotland was brought to life by all of our drivers ( Mark, John) , guides ( Nigel, Jenny, Christine, Tom, James, ? ). The weather was beautiful ! Great time!

Pros: 1. great tour guide, 2. interesting experiences, 3. tasty group meals, and 4. gracious accommodation of my vegan meal preference. Cons: 1. the hotel at Oban was miserable - there was mold on my room's ceiling, 2. the open day in Oban (which felt like a wasted day as there wasn't much to do there beyond what we'd already done), and 3. the Covid policy, which felt too cautious in 2023. 25% of our group had to leave the tour early.

This is a very well planned tour, giving us significant and varied highlights of Scotland, its history, landscapes and people. There is a great balance between "time on our own" and planned group experiences. Our tour guide Charlie Rawson is a real gem - she brought such a lot to the experience that I am certain that it would have been "very good" without her, but she is what made it "outstanding". Her regular "treats" were much enjoyed and appreciated too!

After having been to Greece on our first RS tour we were definitely not disappointed. We did have high expectations as our guide in Greece, Filippos was amazing. The guides convey a love for their country and we as tourists see the world in often a new perspective.

First of all this email was rescued from my "SPAM" folder which is the reason for my delay in responding. I had a great time, visiting a beautiful country with a great group of fellow travelers. Our guides James and his "trainee" Andrew aptly explained Scottish history and the interweaving of Scotland and England, culturally and financially. They presented the challenges to any desire of future separation or independence that quite frankly could only be explained by someone from Scotland.

"My favorite day on the trip is not an obvious overwhelming "Got-You" moment. We visited the Culloden battlefield site. Walking through the paths thru the park encountering the stones marking a possible burial site of the different clans of Jacobite followers and seeing my family name, affected me more than I realized at the time."

This was our 7th Rick Steves trip and it was as well planned and crafted as any. Scotland has a story to tell and our guide James and the other guides did a perfect job of telling it. As always there was a good balance of guided tour with great content and free time.

"Lots of great moments, but the best one for me was the tour of the Culloden Battlefield Tour. It was probably the most significant battle in Scottish history. I enjoyed every minute. We had a great group and our guide, Yorick, was super. He had a great sense of humor and a laid back style for storytelling which helped me remember the historical bits of Scottish history. For the most part, all the hotels were great and all were clean and comfortable. Shout out to our driver, Steve. He was just as invested with giving the group a good time as Yorick. Very personable, shared Outlander stories & gave us Super Caly's Go Ballistic, Celtics Are Atrocious!

I generally enjoyed the tour, our guide Jim was helpful and attentive. The trip was too long, too short in Glasgow and Edinburgh and too long in Oban and Inverness. I had not visited Scotland before, and there were places on the itinerary I would not have thought to visit independently. Never a fan of bagpipes, I enjoyed the school band performances in the town of Oban, as well as the visit from Gilly, who is both a good performer and a gifted raconteur. I often find the things I would not have done myself to be the most enjoyable.

We thoroughly enjoyed wandering Scotland with Jim. We saw a good variety of the country (urban and rural) and experienced much of the local scene. The pace was wonderful. No one dropped into bed at the end of the day exhausted but we definitely saw a great deal. We miss our fellow travelers now that we are at home which is a sign of a great time had by all.

"The ferry from Oban to Iona was simply spectacular. Perfect weather (we saw several seasons that day but nothing oppressive) and we've never seen so many shades of green! Such beautiful scenery. Weather was a bit dicey; very unpredictable (and sometimes dramatic) changes. Good itinerary, but I think not including the Isle of Skye is disappointing (though I think I understand why it is not included). From start to finish, this tour and services were outstanding. Weeks before day 1 our 1st Hotel was changed; we appreciated that our "pre-tour" night reservation was smoothly transitioned to the new property. Specialist guides, and our R/S guides were exceptional as was our bus driver! Scotland is a beautiful country with friendly people. As expected from a RSE tour, the tour guides are the strength of the tour. Our tour guide Anne was wonderful, very knowledgeable, organized and pleasant. The hotels were the weakest part of an otherwise very nice trip. The one in Oban in particular was very in a poor condition and should not be acceptable by RSE standards. The hotels in Glasgow and Dunkeld were the exception as they were pretty nice.

I think the guide was amazing but the cleanliness and the quality of the hotels was questionable. Our first hotel that we stayed in was horrible. Highlights: Tour guide knowledge & scheduling of the day's events. Well chosen sites. Disappointments: Tired hotels, can't classify as "European Quaint." Vacation from our vacation at the beginning of a tour - Oban - was poorly timed. Break should be mid-tour. Little to do in Oban. Possibly a group option on the free day? Guide didn't offer hidden surprises; had to find these on our own. Poor scheduling of group meals. 29 people, too many. Expensive; some weak local guides.Rushed at Sterling.

This was our 2nd RS Tour and it was just as great as the 1st. Nigel is a great guide, his knowledge and background was so beneficial to learn about this wonderful country. The accommodations were good and in very good locations. The transportation to the various locations was second to none. Our tour guide kept us informed entertained. And thank God, we had excellent weather.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Maybe it was not one most people would say, but it was the first breakfast. It had all the local breakfast foods I wanted to try.. I was also amazed at the skills of the sheep dogs. Even though I did not understand half of what they told me, I was impressed with their kindness and helpfulness. As to the sites, I am always impressed with the architecture and the labor to build it."

When To Go & Weather

Any time between April and October is a good time to visit Scotland. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for combining the convenience of peak season with generally good weather and lighter crowds. While Scotland never quite feels crowded, July and August are considered peak season, with long days and the best weather (though never guaranteed).

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour in the Documents section of your tour account.

Please note: There are no triple rooms available on this tour.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements and transfers are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Glasgow (GLA) and out of Edinburgh (EDI) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Alternatively, Glasgow and Edinburgh are less than an hour apart by train. You could choose to fly roundtrip to/from one of the cities and then take a train between Glasgow and Edinburgh.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Scotland guidebook.
