Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Scotland

We'll gather at our hotel in Inverness at 4 p.m. for a "Welcome to Scotland" meeting. Then we'll take a neighborhood orientation walk and get acquainted with one another over dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Inverness.

Day 2: Castles and Culloden

This morning we'll enjoy a panoramic cruise of Loch Ness (monster sightings not guaranteed) before disembarking at the dramatic lochside ruins of Urquhart Castle. Then we're off to still-lived-in Cawdor Castle, where we'll stroll through manicured gardens and enjoy afternoon tea. We'll end our day together with a tour of the evocative Culloden Battlefield, where Bonnie Prince Charlie's defeat in 1746 marked the beginning of the end of the Highland clan system. Tonight is a great opportunity to enjoy some traditional music in one of Inverness' many pubs.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Boat: ½ hour. Sleep in Inverness.

Day 3: The Rugged, Romantic Highlands

Today we'll explore more of the scenic and romantic Highlands as we travel to Perthshire. On the way we'll stop in Speyside, happy home to half of all Scotland's whisky distilleries and one of its few remaining woolen mills. We'll tour a local distillery and sample a wee dram, then head across town to experience the fine art of weaving. After lunch together, we'll visit a local sheep farm to learn more about Scotland's wool industry and marvel at the talented sheepdogs in action. This evening we'll enjoy dinner together and meet a Scottish bagpiper for some music and a lesson on this unusual instrument's history.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Perthshire.

Day 4: Crannogs and Hermits

This morning we'll learn about the Iron Age people who first farmed these lands and built Scotland's unique crannogs — prehistoric, thatched-roofed defensive huts built on piers out over the lochs. After lunch together, we're off to the charming village of Dunkeld on the River Tay, where we'll have a guided tour of its medieval cathedral before enjoying free time to poke around town. This afternoon, we'll take a walk to the Hermitage, where we'll hear about Scottish Romanticism amidst Black Linn Falls and towering forest. After time to relax, we'll regroup this evening for dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Perthshire.

Day 5: Charming St. Andrews

Today we're off to St. Andrews, Scotland's oldest university town and a mecca for golfers worldwide. You'll have time to explore the ruins of St. Andrews' medieval cathedral, watch duffers playing the Old Course — considered the birthplace of golf — and enjoy lunch. Then, we'll cross the famous Firth of Forth on our way to Scotland's capital city, Edinburgh. Your guide will orient you to our lively neighborhood before setting you free for the rest of the evening.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Edinburgh.

Day 6: Edinburgh's Historic Heart

This morning we'll take a walking tour of Edinburgh's old town, winding our way up the Royal Mile with its wealth of historic buildings, quaint shops, narrow lanes, and hidden courtyards — then onto Grassmarket and Greyfriars cemetery. We'll set you free for the afternoon and evening to visit imposing Edinburgh Castle (entry ticket provided) at your leisure to see the Scottish Crown Jewels and soak up the dramatic views from this military stronghold and birthplace of the city.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Edinburgh.

Day 7: The Politics of Scotland

Since the days of William Wallace, the Scots have chafed under English rule, and over the centuries Scotland's drive for independence hasn't waned. Today we'll explore the complicated relationship between Scotland and England and learn about the modern independence movement that came with self-rule. Then we'll take a look at the "other side" with a visit to the King's official residence in Edinburgh, the elegant Palace of Holyroodhouse. The remainder of the day is yours to explore more of this regal city. Tonight we'll share memories of Scotland and toast new friends at our final dinner together. Slàinte!

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Edinburgh.

Day 8: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Edinburgh's airport and train station are easy connections from our neighborhood. Glasgow is one hour away by train; London is 90 minutes by air. For those tempted to continue their trip, Edinburgh is a great jumping off point to Paris, Dublin, Amsterdam, and many other exciting destinations. Turas math dhut! (Happy travels!)

Physical Demands

Our tours are physically active! It's an essential part of the Rick Steves tour experience. On our Heart of Scotland in 8 Days tour — among other things — you'll need to happily…

  1. Carry/roll your luggage over uneven pavement (possibly several blocks) and up stairways to reach your hotel, then up several flights of stairs to reach your room.
  2. Be on your feet, walking and standing, for up to three hours, indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
  3. Sleep with street noise and no (or weak) air conditioning.
  4. After orientation and transportation lessons, be able to navigate towns and cities on your own.
  5. Walk up steep hills in Edinburgh and at Urquhart Castle.

I think my favorite part of the trip was my tour guide, Charlie! She was always upbeat, smiling and so intelligent. Everything she told us was so informative. The hotels were nice and in great locations. I was there a single person and everyone else had either a spouse or children with them. All of my fellow travelers were so kind and watched out for me. The bus was also very nice and our driver did a great job. The tours that were chosen were excellent!

The tour was very professional, but retained a sense of fun and wonder at the same time. Charlie was an excellent tour guide. Everything was well thought out. However, maybe an extra day in Inverness and one less in Edinburgh would have made it feel less front loaded.

First time in Scotland and joined tour with high expectations, and it did not disappoint! Liz was an amazing Tour Leader, she made the whole experience extra special with her passion for her country, her knowledge of its history and her warm engaging personality. She was an absolute gem. Paul was assisting on this Tour and he was also a hoot. (he'll have to look this up, lol).

Just returned from the Heart of Scotland Tour and it was extraordinary! This was my first trip with RSE and it certainly won’t be the last. It was more than what I expected. Our guide, Liz, was top-notch! Her knowledge of Scotland and her storytelling ability made history come alive. Not only was she a walking encyclopedia, but she always went the extra mile to ensure our best travel experience. The old saying goes, you get what you pay for, and this trip was more than worth it.

This was our 8th Rick Steves' tour, so we had high expectations, met by a fantastic guide named Liz who was knowledgeable, well organized, flexible and fun. It rained often, but we were able to do most of what is on the itinerary. One change was in Edinburgh because there was a royal family member staying at Palace of Holyroodhouse, which closed it to the public. We instead toured the decommissioned royal yacht, the Britannia, as an excellent substitute. The tour provided food was also great.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Scotland's incredible scenery, especially in the highlands, provided many wow moments. My favorite activity was visiting the Crannog Centre where they have artifacts from pre-historic iron age people who lived in houses built on stilts out over the loch. They have taken great care to re-create a small village to demonstrate how the people lived. I also loved the border collies herding sheep, even in the pouring rain! Bottle feeding orphaned lambs and sweet puppies was icing on the cake, "

Outstanding in all regards thanks to our tour leader, Liz. Her background as an educator was apparent as we visited highlights of Scotland and learned the history to make the experience even more impressive and meaningful. Our collective "needs" were always taken care of by Liz, with wonderful group meals, yummy snacks, vista views, bathroom breaks, advice for free time, and going to plan B when weather disrupted plan A. Her tour was well organized, never felt rushed, giving lifetime memories.

A great time for our first vacation tour overseas! We learned so much on the 8-day tour about Scotland, the history, the people, the geology, the food, the politics, the products (whisky, wool, golf), how ways to be good tourists (including using public transit on a regular basis). We augmented the tour with a few days beforehand in Glasgow, Oban, Mull, and Iona, and in St. Andrews afterwards, as we wanted to experience a little bit on our own. Our tour guides, Liz and Paul were top-notch.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Which one? Looking down the River Ness in Inverness, learning there were 15 churches in our line-of-sight? The castles? The boat ride down Loch Ness to Urquhart Castle? The Culloden battlefield? The Whisky tour at Glen Moray, Loch Lomond or Loch Tummel and the Queen's View? Seeing St. Andrews and the Old Course & Links in person? Or Edinburgh, with its volcanic base, Castle, Crown Jewels, Calton Hill, HMY Brittanica? I think... the geologic history and how it shaped events in Scotland"

It was informative, breathtakingly beautiful and fun. Our tour guide, Jodie Stalker, was the highlight of the trip. She was always positive, energetic, got us where we needed to be, and most importantly - she was a local from Edinburgh. This made a big difference in the experiences she shared. We've had guides (both on RS tours and others ) where the guide was not local and it wasn't as informative. She made the long bus rides fun by sharing Scottish history and music. We were taken care of

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I had two: one was watching Neil with his sheep and impressive border collies work. The other was the day we could stay back at the hotel in Pitlochry- Kinloch Rannoch, instead of take the bus for other activities. I stayed back and took lovely walks around the Loch. The only thing that would have made it better was if I'd run into the Outlander cast, who were filming nearby. :-)"

I have used RS books for travel but this was my first tour of any kind and RS was the way to go! Our guide, Charlie, was incredible and set the bar high, she knows and loves Scotland and shared that enthusiasm with every person in the group. I felt as if I came home with a wealth of knowledge I would have never received traveling by myself, and opened us up to see things we would have missed. I cannot wait to take another tour and see the world through another RS guide next year!

"Seeing Neil with his dogs, sheering a sheep, or the walking tour in Edinburgh discussing the past and present would be easy to say as a wow moment, but honestly Charlie providing us with background before we went somewhere and encouraging us to talk to people and try different foods or treats made my trip the most memorable. I do not think I have ever had the opportunity to go on such a variety of tours or to feel as if connected so much with another country as I did with Scotland. Slainte!"

"The Scottish Crannog Center had a woman grinding grain on a flat stone just like the Native American peoples did here in the New World… that one concept kind of kicked off a desire for more information and led us to the excellent National Museum of Scotland which is full of artifacts and maps of their locations.. It was a very enjoyable tour, filled with lots of history. Our guide and driver, Jodie and Jimmy, were a fantastic team, keeping us in the know regarding our daily stops, and getting us to and from those stops, comfortably and safely. Our hotels were wonderful, and in most cases well located, providing us the opportunity to easily explore the cities on foot. The group meals were generally tasty and slotted nicely into the busy tour schedule.

"The day trip from Inverness to Loch Ness/Urquhart, Cawdor, and Culloden. It was a misty and foggy morning on the loch which just added to the experience on the ferry. The ruins of Urquhart were so different from Cawdor Castle and it's beautiful gardens. That was followed by an informative guided tour of the Culloden Battlefield. It was a FULL day, but it was all amazing. "

This is my fifth Rick Steves tour and I absolutely loved it!! I travel alone and have met so many great people, some I have become friends with and continue to stay in touch. Our tour guide Jodie was phenomenal and made this tour my favorite. From the first night I knew we were in for a wonderful time. Jodie is a dream come true, I knew I was in safe hands. Thank you Jodie. My next Rick Steves tour is Portugal this coming September. I look forward to more adventures. Thank you Rick

Jodi and tour were outstanding from Day 1. Everyday was a new & exciting adventure full of beautiful country side and interesting history come to life. Cawdor Castle gardens were beautiful. Having an after dinner bagpiper play was interesting but more playing and less story would have been better. The crannog tour was very interesting and the 2 young singers were wonderful. The sheep outside the hotel & beautiful green scenery everywhere made each day magical. Nice Edinburgh hotel location.

"Jodi made everyday a WOW! The sheepdogs & puppies were impressive to watch and fun to hold the pups. But how does he "relax" the sheep which allows us to all take a turn at shearing was unbelievable. Now you need to start a tour further north and west in Scotland."

I thought the tours in and around Inverness and Perth were excellent. We spent 3 days in Edenborough and felt like we were left on our own for over half of that time. We are paying for tours not to be dropped off in the city to wander. I thought what would have made a well rounded trip was to experience some real Scottish music/dancing one evening. Especially dancing. Seeing the bagpipes was good, but wanted more culture with dance.

This was our second tour within a 3 week period. Previously, we took the 7 day Ireland tour with Pascal and took a week off prior to the Scotland tour. We visited Belfast for 3 days and 4 days in St. Andrews before catching up with the tour in Inverness. Again, a very good overview of Scotland, the history and customs of the country were covered effectively.

Seeing the castle and cathedral ruins, the Culloden battlefield, and the Scottish Crannog Center really helped me to understand the history of Scotland. I greatly enjoyed learning visiting the cooperage, watching the working sheep dogs, seeing St. Andrews. These things really set the stage, and to finish off with a walking tour of Edinburgh and visits to the Edinburgh Castle, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, and the Scottish Parliament just completed the picture for me.

I would not do this tour again nor would I recommend it. There was too much time spent driving to places we didn't want to see. We hoped there would be other things to do & see that would compensate for those things on the tour we had no interest in, but that didn't prove to be the case. My wife is losing her vision & we wanted this to be a special trip for her to see things while she can. It did not meet our expectations.

The overall tour experience with significantly dampened by the fact that on day one four couples joined us from the Ireland tour, at least two of whom had COVID. They didn't disclose it and COVID spread throughout the entire group. We started losing people as we went along. We were down to 14 people by the final dinner on Saturday night in Edinburgh.

This was our first 'guided' tour and our first Rick Steve's Tour. We were not sure how we would like being on a tour bus. Let us first say our RSGuide Jodie was awesome and I was sad to leave her. Jimmy the bus driver was also amazing. This is more important than you think because we traveled for days on roads that let only one car through at a time. He cleaned the bus inside and out daily. I even caught him washing the hub caps because we had gone through a puddle earlier.

Overall the experience was good. I would not call it great. There was a lot of time spent riding on the bus. I understand that happens when moving around, but the Loch Rannoch Hotel was way out of the way and took a lot of time for the bus to drive in/out to hotel. This meant we had almost no free time until we got to Edinburg and we had very little time in St. Andrews. Also the wording needs to change about visiting Edinburg castle. The time spent in Inverness was great, length appropriate. The middle portion of the tour had too much bus time repeating the same routes multiple times. The whisky stops were on two different days which didn't reflect the best planning. We were given only a couple of hours in amazing St. Andrews, which needed more time. Walking out the front door of the hotel in Edinburgh and looking up at the castle then walking around the corner to the Grassmarket. And the visit to the working sheep farm with Neal and his dogs! All Wow! moments in different ways. "

Great tour! Wish we could have stayed longer but this fit our schedule. The weather was fantastic for us, like springtime compared to summer in Florida. Jaime, our tour guide and entertainer could do standup comedy for sure!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"While the sheep dogs were amazing and we got to see the ‘Hairy Coos!’, pulling into our hotel on Loch Rannoch with its pristine beauty and Schiehallion as the backdrop was it for me. It’s a drive to get to the hotel, but our driver Jimmy has some major skills. "

We greatly enjoyed our tour Guide, Jamie, and the insights into Scottish history and culture that she provided. We also enjoyed the various activities that were included, especially the visit with Neil, the shepherd, and the visit to the recreated Crannog site. If we had toured on our own, we would not likely have stopped for these two experiences. The hotels and the restaurant choices were all lovely.

Our family of four had a wonderful time! This was our last big "guaranteed" family vacation before our daughter goes off to college and forges her own path, and she chose the Scotland tour. It couldn't have been better. Ross, our tour guide, was the glue that held everything together and his knowledge of Scotland seemed infinite (plus, he was very funny!).

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Neil and the sheep dogs were simply amazing. It was pouring down rain when we were there, but that didn't dampen :) the experience at all. Loch Ness was serene and beautiful, the castles and their histories were fascinating, and the group we toured with was great."

This was my first Rick Steves Tour and I went solo. (I get more vacation than my husband since I am a teacher, so I decided to tour Scotland before meeting my husband for two weeks in Ireland.) I ended up being the only solo traveler on the trip, but I loved our entire experience. Ross Tillbrook was our guide and he was FANTASTIC. Laid back and calm...yet full of information.....just like I like it. I do not have enough great things to say about the tour. Every place we visited was perfect.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I loved being in the towns and cities, meeting the wonderful people of Scotland. They were so kind and open to sharing. I LOVED the sheep herding experience and I also loved hearing Gilley and her bagpipes and funny antidotes she shared. (I think you should see if she could also bring her own children and grandchildren sometime. I bet they'd be AMAZING together. Kind of like the Von Trapp's of bagpiping. haha) "

This was our very first tour and we were pleasantly surprised. We have done a lot of traveling on our own but we thought we would see more of Scotland with a tour. We found that we were very compatible with the other tour members and that we did, in fact, see a variety of sights. Having a tour guide enhanced the trip as well.

My first trip to Scotland was everything I hoped it would be. Our tour was great! The group size was small enough to get to know people and yet feel free to have time alone as a couple to explore on our own. Our tour guide, Jeanie Carmichael was fantastic. She told us historical stories on the bus to keep us entertained and informed. We were busy everyday with about three different activities/sites to see. It definitely took a few days at home to recover! It was well worth the cost of the trip!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The whole trip was my wow moment. It was great to experience my ancestral home. On the first night in Inverness we were walking back to the hotel from the first dinner. Suddenly at a busy intersection we heard a bagpipe band playing but could not see them. We discovered them practicing on a roof top and were able to watch via a staircase by the Inverness Castle. It was a magical moment!"

A good mix of the history, culture and natural beauty of Scotland. The hotels were charming with friendly staff and in good locations. Our excellent tour guide, Jeanie, was knowledgable about the history and culture of Scotland with lots of entertaining stories. The local guides were extremely interesting and charming. I left the tour with a much better understanding of Scottish people's current lifestyle and how they relate to the rest of the world economically and culturally.

"Standing on the hillside of the Culloden battlefield and hearing the guide talk about the Munro (Blackwatch) Regiment and its role in the conflict...I believe he stated that the leader of the regimernt, a Munro, had been killed at an earlier battle, but it was revealing to understand that this was the place where so many lives had been lost in what was a basically a civil war."

I loved Scotland! It is beautiful and steeped in history. The other travelers were great. The best group I have traveled with. A bit too much focus on whisky. I would have rather had more time in St. Andrews then go to another distillery. Several other tour members felt this way and several opted out.

Very well organized tour. Great group of people; our guide, Jodie, was fabulous, and took excellent care of us! Our driver, Jimmy, expertly navigated the winding narrow roads outside the cities. All hotels were unique and nicely located; good rooms. Meals were varied and delicious. 8 days went by quickly. While we would have loved to spend more time in several places (St. Andrews; Dunkeld), there was an ample amount of 'free time' built into the itinerary. Good balance between bus and walking.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Many wow moments: Bob loved Holyrood and all the castles. Julie especially enjoyed the bagpiper's music, personal stories and her recitation of the Burns poem. We both appreciated the cooperage, and the outdoor components (Hermitage; sheep dog demo.) The scenery and natural surroundings -- and the +70' weather ("Tops Off!") were glorious."

We began in Inverness and over the course of the week traveled along the west side of Scotland to end our tour in Edinburgh. I was traveling alone, but met so many other people on my tour that I was rarely alone. Our tour guide was so helpful giving advice on how to do something we wanted to do. I like to at least wade into any body of water that I can. Ironically there was another member of the tour willing to join me in my adventures. Jodie was let us know where the best access was.

That was on my bucket list, but I was really excited to stay on Loch Rannoch! I’ve read all the Her Royal Spyness books by Ryse Bowen. Lady Georgianna Rannoch is the heroine and Loch Rannoch is the setting for some of her escapades. I was able to actually swim in the loch! "

When To Go & Weather

Any time between April and October is a good time to visit Scotland. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for combining the convenience of peak season with generally good weather and lighter crowds. While Scotland never quite feels crowded, July and August are considered peak season, with long days and the best weather (though never guaranteed).
