Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Spain

We'll gather at our Córdoba hotel at 5 p.m. for a "Welcome to Spain" get-together. Then we'll join the locals in their nightly ritual and head out for an orientation paseo (stroll) through our neighborhood. We'll finish by getting acquainted over an Andalusian-style dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Córdoba.

Day 2: Córdoba's Moorish Maze and Modern City

This morning we'll explore Córdoba's maze-like Moorish old town, from its Roman foundations to its marvelous centerpiece — and Spain's best Islamic sight after the Alhambra — the Mezquita. This afternoon you're free to experience more of this magnificent city on your own, including its hidden patios and modern Plaza de las Tendillas neighborhood. This evening we'll celebrate the rhythm of Andalucía with an intimate flamenco performance.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Córdoba.

Day 3: Ruta del Vino and Andalucía's Olive Country

An hour's drive along Andalucía's Ruta del Vino brings us to the heart of the Montilla-Morilles wine region. We'll tour a local bodega to learn about the famous Pedro Ximénez grape — and its place among Spanish wines. After lunch, we'll continue through the province of Jaén, getting our first glimpse at a landscape dominated by more than 60 million olive trees. Our ultimate destination is the historic, quaint — and little touristed — town of Úbeda, one-time home to Romans, Visigoths, Muslims, Christians, and Jews. Tonight we'll orient ourselves to the cultural delights of the town before enjoying dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Úbeda.

Day 4: Undiscovered Úbeda

There's more than meets the eye to this unspoiled, charming town, and this morning we'll meet our local guide to soak up some of its Old World charms. Starting with the impressive Chapel of El Salvador, dedicated to Francisco de los Cobos, we'll unravel its history and dive deeper into the impact of the man who put Úbeda on the map. Later, we'll visit the mystically inspiring Synagogue del Agua before diving back into 21st Century. Your afternoon and evening are free to make even more discoveries.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Úbeda.

Day 5: Rolling Hills and Royal Views

We'll start our day with a visit to one of Úbeda's nearby olive estates, where we'll learn all about olive oil production and put our newfound knowledge to a taste-test over lunch together at the estate. Then we'll head to Granada, where we'll begin with a neighborhood orientation before heading up the Albayzín hill for dinner together and a magical sunset view of the Alhambra.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Granada.

Day 6: Moorish Treasures of Granada

This morning you'll learn about Spain's Islamic legacy with a visit to the sprawling palace and garden complex of the Alhambra (when available). This last and greatest of Europe's Moorish palaces will awe you with its grace and artistry. This afternoon and evening, you'll be free to linger longer at the Alhambra and make your own discoveries along the colorful streets and alleyways of Granada's Old Town.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep: in Granada.

Day 7: Ronda

Today's destination is the hill town of Ronda, home to Spain's oldest bullring and its most breathtaking gorge. On our way, we'll pause to marvel at the 5,000-year-old megalithic Dolmen of Menga (the largest in Europe). Just before Ronda, we'll stop at a local bull farm to learn about this fascinating — and often controversial — cultural pastime and enjoy a country lunch together. In town, you'll have free time to explore the city's Moorish and Mercadillo quarters linked together by the famous gravity-defying stone bridge. We'll cap our day with an intimate guitar concert together before being set free to complete your quintessential Andalusian evening with dinner on your own.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Ronda.

Day 8: Sevilla's Barrio Santa Cruz

This morning we'll drive to Sevilla, Spain's most flamboyant and atmospheric city. After settling in to our neighborhood hotel, our local guide will introduce us to the Barrio Santa Cruz and the world's largest Gothic cathedral. Tonight you'll have time to do more exploring on your own or take in a performance of sultry, swirling flamenco.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Sevilla.

Day 9: Sevilla's Royal Alcázar

We'll start today with a tour of the beautifully Moorish-style Alcázar palace (when available), the Sevilla home of the Spanish royal family for the past 500 years. Afterward, you're free to walk in the footsteps of Carmen and Don Juan, linger in Sevilla's charming squares, or stroll along the romantic Guadalquivir River. This evening we'll share travel memories and toast new friends at our final dinner together, capped off with a carriage ride through the streets of Sevilla. Salud!

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Sevilla.

Day 10: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Sevilla's airport, with easy connections throughout Europe, is a bus or taxi ride away. Alternately, you can hop on an AVE train to Madrid to continue your Iberian adventures on your own. Hasta luego!

Itinerary specifics subject to change.

Please note: We may not be able to visit the Alhambra as a group or guarantee admission due to their new restrictive ticketing policy.

The tour overall was absolutely outstanding. This was my first Rick Steves' tour and it will not be my last. Our guide Javier did a wonderful job and was very informative and keep the group moving when needed and kept the mood light.

"My "wow" moment was the light dinner at an old cathedral that was turned into the community center. Walking the grounds while it was just our group was truly an amazing experience. The dinner that was provided was truly outstanding, and not an experience one could have experienced on their own. "

We loved everything about the trip from the cities/ towns we visited to our guide, Javier, to the different places we got to visit and tours we went on.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Personally, it was visiting the bull farm outside of Ronda. I was not very excited about anything related to bull fighting, but this was such an enlightening experience, including how well they cared for all of the animals there. I had a paradigm shift away from my previous assumptions, and absolutely loved spending time with all of the horses as well!"

We had to deal with some serious rain at times, which caused me to rethink the notion that it is always better to stay at a small hotel that is unapproachable by bus. But other than that the tour content was excellent and our guides were quite good. I particularly enjoyed the rich, personal knowledge that Jorge Roman brought to his job, and his quirky humor was most enjoyable.

I loved the overall organization of the tour and the locations of the tour. Our host/tour guide Jorge Roman was very organized, very cordial and very knowledgeable. He made himself available to all members of the group to answer questions. He provided some important context regarding Spanish culture and history. The other tour guides were very good as well.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Seeing the historical sites and realizing the impact of Moorish culture on Spanish history. I was truly impressed with the Moorish architecture and engineering in-regards to providing water to the palaces and the surrounding buildings. I think the ingenuity and knowledge of the Moors is overlooked by many in the west. The tour of the cities provided me with a greater understanding of their critical role in European history. "

Fascinating itinerary, outstanding guide (Robert), perfect pace with 2 or 3 nights in almost every place (just one 1-nighter). Learned so much about the 1,000-year sweep of Moorish and Spanish history, and thoroughly enjoyed all the tastes (olives, wine, tapas, nuts, cookies, pomegranites) and sounds (Spanish guitarists, flamenco dancers and singers, church bells, children's laughter) and sights (colorful tiles, stunning views, astonishing gold and jewels in the palaces). Incredible!

Great guide, enjoyed and appreciated all tour activities. We at times had too much time for what there was to see other than what we saw together in some towns. Cordoba. Really 2 nights would be about right but since starting point most of us had 3 nights. Obeda was 2 nights and I loved the Synagogue del Agua but one night would have been enough. Ronda could be 2 nights as not time for all we wanted to see. The bull farm which was great could be a day trip from Ronda possibly.

Another wonderfully educational and interesting tour. Amanda did a fabulous job of highlighting and alerting us to aspects of Spanish life that made activities all the more interesting and insightful. Particularly interesting was the "lesson" on flamenco before seeing the performance. Amanda was exceptional in looking out for tour members and their needs as well.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Cordoba and Spanish guitar. It was wonderful. I had never been anywhere in the Andalusia region of Spain and I learned so much about the history of the region and of Spain in general. I loved the itinerary because there was just the right amount of time in each place, although I do wish we had an extra day in Sevilla, but my bad for not doing an extra day there myself.

This trip was eye opening in so many ways. We marveled at the multilayered history and multicultural impacts that Islamic, Judaic, and Christian peoples have had on this land over the centuries. I have a greater appreciation for how successful these groups (for the most part) were at living in peace for so long. I was also struck at the immense wealth accumulated by Spanish monarchs from their conquests in the new world and how quickly it all was squandered.

A bit challenging in that our bags did not get to us for 5/6 days and at that point I contracted a prolonged and severe case of dysentery that lasted the remainder of the trip. Favorite "WOW" moment

"The dinner in Granada was outstanding, but my personal favorite wow was the bull farm near Ronda. I learned so much about a subject I formerly was repulsed by, and Mr. Tajeda and our local guide were so welcoming and accessible. I enjoyed all the eye candy! I liked not going at a 24/7 pace. I liked the less populated cities more. Ubeda and Ronda were my favorite destinations. Quiet and beautiful. The church we visited in Ubeda and the tapas and drinks over the valley was so beautiful and refreshing! The docents were fabulous! Don’t get me wrong, I loved the tours of Mezquita and the amazing Alhambra. The dinner the night before the Alhambra was my favorite! I’m definitely very glad I was on this tour.

The Jewish dwelling in Cordoba? The tour and photo offerings were wonderful. I loved the bull farm. The woman was so informative. We learned a lot from her. Overall the tour was great. The itinerary was well planned and the local guides were excellent. Our guide Javier wasn't up to the standard we expected or had experienced on previous tours with cheaper companies. This tour was dedicated to the small Spanish area of Andalucía and allowed lots of time to luxuriate in the beauty, history and culture of the Moors and the Spanish. My fellow travelers were friendly and a pleasure to spend time with. Our guide James was a Spanish enthusiast and navigated our needs in spite of the twists and turns that can happen on a tour.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Although driving along the boulevard into Seville with the jacaranda trees in full bloom was an amazing experience leading us to the incredible cathedral, it was not the highlight. Sitting at our rooftop restaurant eating a deviously curated meal and watching the Alhambra emerge from hills bathed in light was otherworldly. The warm breeze wafted across our tables, conversation flowed and even a full moon rose in the sky to complete a perfect picture. How could anyone ask for more."

"The Best of Andalucia" was an outstanding tour, a nice blend of strenuous sight-seeing and unscheduled time. It ran quite smoothly, and Amanda, our calm tour leader, kept us all well-informed. It was phenomenal and extremely well organized and crafted. Robert was a great tour guide, and the contract guides at each location were equally impressive. There was a ton of information that was provided, sometimes too much, but it also managed to capture my attention virtually the whole time and opened my senses and pores to learn more and take it all in. The locations chosen were thoughtful and methodically chosen. Liked the honest acceptance of both the good/bad sides of spanish history

Favorite "WOW" moment

"When I saw the group come together and really begin to enjoy each other. The Alhambra night was stunning and staggering. It was as expected, tough maneuvering bags to hotels, figuring out plans for a lot of free time. At first, I was taken aback by the free time given, but it grew on me; what did not grow on me is in general the philosophy of getting into a old historic hotel, meaning old hotel problems and limited amenities; I think a revisit recommended on this strategy as there are other better hotels in city centers. Lastly, engaging a cheap bus with uncomfy seats, with no WiFi, was a huge disappointment.

Our 3rd RS trip! From Cordoba to Seville, there was a wonderful surprise everyday. Whether it was a beautiful view, an amazing piece of architecture, an 'RS only experience' (meeting the Matador on his bull farm!!) or new connections with wonderful people; this trip was designed especially for us. A few words to describe our guide and friend, Amanda B. She gives life to the experience (this is our second trip with her) and so much love to people and places. So lucky to share this trip with her.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Ubeda! We had never heard of this town. Having tapas on the back patio of San Lorenzo church that was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War, overlooking a beautiful valley at sunset, and is now more art than religion during its renovation. Wow. The Sinagoga de Agua was both beautiful and moving. Many wow moments...Alhambra dinner at sunset, Casa Don Bosco in Ronda (views and guitars), Mesquita, Andrea the local guide in Ubeda, Amanda, Amanda, Amanda..how do you pick just one?"
