Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Barcelona

Barcelona, the proud capital of Catalunya, may be the most festive city on the Mediterranean. We'll meet at 5 p.m. at our centrally located hotel for an orientation meeting — then we'll join the party with a stroll through our surprise-filled, people-packed neighborhood before having dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Barcelona.

Day 2: Gaudí and Modernista Eixample

Today is devoted to the swirling architecture of Antoni Gaudí and Barcelona's Modernisme movement. We'll stroll through the Eixample neighborhood, visiting the Block of Discord, on our way to tour the greatest work of Barcelona's master builder — the towering, dizzying Sagrada Família. Afterwards, you'll be free to explore more Art Nouveau delights throughout the city.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Barcelona.

Day 3: Barri Gòtic and Picasso

Today we'll visit the Picasso Museum, Europe's best collection of Picasso paintings, where we'll trace the story of this hometown boy-genius' art as he evolved from a kid who painted like an adult…to an adult who painted like a kid. We'll end our tour in Barcelona's maze-like Gothic Quarter, exploring from its Roman foundations to the spires of its candle-, relic- (and geese-!) strewn cathedral. This evening we'll toast to our last night in Barcelona with dinner together.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Barcelona.

Day 4: Park Güell and a Speedy Train to Madrid

We'll start today with a panoramic bus tour of Barcelona, leading to Gaudí's famed Park Güell. Then it's "all aboard" for one of Europe's speediest trains to Madrid. Upon arrival, we'll meet our bus for a tour of Madrid's major monuments and classy boulevards. Once we've settled into our hotel in the heart of Madrid, we'll take a neighborhood orientation walk, ending with a tapas-style dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Train: 3 hours. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Madrid.

Day 5: Madrid's Royal Palace

Today, we'll take a historical walking tour starting at the very center of Madrid: the bustling Puerta del Sol. From there we'll walk to — and through — the sumptuously decorated Royal Palace. With 2,000 rooms, tons of luxurious tapestries, and a king's ransom of chandeliers, this is truly one of the great palaces of Europe. This evening we'll enjoy a swirling performance of Flamenco, before setting you free for dinner on your own.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Madrid.

Day 6: Masterpieces of Madrid

This morning we'll tour — the Reina Sofía, Spain's greatest modern art museum and home of Picasso's Guernica. Then we'll make our way to the masterpiece-packed Prado — where you'll see paintings by Velázquez, Goya, El Greco, and others. The rest of the afternoon is yours to stroll through the majestic Retiro Gardens (Madrid's most popular park) or do a little shopping.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Madrid.

Day 7: Toledo

A short bus ride after breakfast will take us to Spain's old capital city of Toledo (and back in time about 500 years). We'll take a traffic-free walking tour that includes Toledo's magnificent cathedral, the historic Tránsito Synagogue, and El Greco's The Burial of the Count of Orgaz in Santo Tomé Chapel. This afternoon you'll have time to enjoy the winding medieval streets of Toledo. We'll catch the bus back to Madrid for our final dinner together to share travel memories and toast new friends. Salud!

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Madrid.

Day 8: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Madrid's airport is an easy bus or taxi ride away — or you may want to continue your Iberian adventures on your own. Hasta luego!

The tour itinerary was excellent and well paced. I loved out lead guide, Adriana. Our local guides were good as well (with the possible exception of Anna in Madrid, who got some things wrong about art).

We had high expectations due to watching the various shows covering Rick Steves tours. Those expectations were met and far exceeded promptly. The guide we had, Adrianna, was smart, bubbly, and extremely knowledgeable about the locations listed in the tour books. More important was that she made it her goal to find out what the various folks on the tour were interested in and make accurate and well thought out suggestions. The hotels the tour booked were top notch and well located for purpose!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Being taken to a flamenco “improv” venue instead of a formal flamenco show. The ambiance was palpable and the show was insanely good. It’s the kind of show format that one finds only after going to dozens or more and finding the gem!"

It was lovely to have a well planned trip with all tickets, tours, transportation and hotels arranged. It made doing the trip feasible. Loved our guide and the local tour guides as well. Quality job! I found it difficult to stay feeling well as there were no exercise facilities in or near the hotels. It would have been nice to have more social/cultural opportunities with locals.

The tour experience was one of the best Rick Steve's tours I have been on. The group was friendly and fun and we had the best tour guide in Adrianna and all the local guides were great. Adrianna was so friendly and very good at keeping the group informed and what to expect. We had great weather and Adrianna did an excellent job and we would love to go on another tour in which she was leading.

"I have two Wow moments. One was at the Prado when I saw the marble bust of "The Veiled Virgin" carved by Giovanni Strazza in which he carved the marble to render the solid stone transparent on the veil covering the face. The other Wow moment was at Gaudi's La Pedrera. My wife and I took a semi virtual tour meaning we wore a clear headset which allowed us to walk the museum but it allowed us to have audio and with our hands we could point at different objects to get more information."

I am thrilled to write my review. This has been the best RS tour we have taken. Adrianna is gracious, charming and fun. She managed to corral us with the diplomacy of Jackie O. All the guides – Anna to Adolfo were scholars! We started our tour in Barcelona. The Gothic area is like a rat maze. We were lost for hours. I really enjoyed the tour, it was a enjoyable introduction to Spain. This tour provided an introduction to its history and architecture ( through our main and local guides) and provided an opportunity to walk the main cities of Barcelona and Madrid along with Toledo. It was a good mix of structured and free time with information provided for options to go exploring. The hotels were very nice and in excellent locations. If you haven't been to Spain, this is a good tour to start with.

I’m a history buff and I loved the Moorish influence on the architecture as well as the Roman ruins underneath much of the city. I loved the integration of Roman, Spanish/Catholic, Jewish influences throughout the city. This really is a city which brings school learning to life! "

Had never been on a Rick Steves tour before, but this will not be my last one. Everything was terrific, from the tour guide and local guides to the wonderful group of people to the amazing sights we saw. All aspects were professional and everything went smoothly. The perfect blend of time with the tour group and guides and time on our own. I learned so much about the historyof Barcelona, Madrid, and Toledo from tour guides with their in-depth knowledge. The hotels had excellent locations too.

"Tough question because there were many "wow" moments, but one standout was the visit to Sagrada Famille. It is amazing inside and out, and I really enjoyed learning about its history as well as the design aspects created by Gaudi. Another was arriving at the lookout above Toledo and taking in the whole view."

Overall my husband and I enjoyed our first Rick Steves tour of Barcelona and Madrid. The local guides were mostly knowledgeable and friendly. Our group events were well thought out and we enjoyed making new friends within our group tourists. We did have one unfortunate issue during our Toledo tour. The guide, clearly continued a couple of missteps. Adolfo overtly made use of ethnic insults towards Asians. “Watch out for the Koreans” implying that they cut in line often while queuing up, & others

The tour was very well organized. Frederico was an excellent guide, he was thorough, charming and got us moving when needed. The hotels were nice, though I think I preferred the smaller boutique hotels I stayed at on my Italy trip six years ago. These hotels seemed more like hotels I have been to in America. The group meals were good but there was a sameness to the Tapas we had at several of the restaurants. I lived the breakfasts at the hotel. I wish the groups were a little smaller.

It was a great tour and I enjoyed everything we did, but it often felt rushed. It was frustrating when we stood outside a building or shop, was told how great it was, and then hustled away without going inside. This was particularly frustrating in Barcelona, when we couldn’t get back or find it again. Having done several RS tours, I don’t remember this happening before. Group dinners were good, but little variety-all similar tapas, and no paella, but the wine and company were great!!

David was awesome, so caring and compassionate, he went above and beyond. I feel like the tour wasn't really "the best" of Barcelona. Very heavy on Gaudi sites. On the last day in Barcelona, we saw several sites on the way out of town that would have been amazing to spend more time at, and know more about. The marina/beach, the Olympic site, the incredible view and the amazing art museum at the top of the hill, where we were given 10 mins to take a picture or two.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Madrid. I was not expecting it to be so vibrant. I had to skip seeing la Guernica, because I REALLY wanted to see the Hieronymous Bosch at the first museum, and we did not have time to explore anything beyond what we were being shown there (el Greco, I believe)."

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour due primarily to our excellent guide, David Gillison, who embodies the Rick Steves' spirit and philosophy of travel--embracing the culture, accepting and understanding the nature of the people, allowing oneself to become a temporary citizen of that place. David created an atmosphere where he opened the door, and provided a safe, natural, friendly pathway to become one with the people. He always wore a smile and projected a warm and friendly attitude at all times.

This was my first Rick Steve's tour. Visiting cultural centers of Spain has been on my wife's bucket list for ages. Even though a city tour was not my top priority, after a week in Barcelona and Madrid with your guides, I was totally grateful for my wife's choice. I love going on these tours. The amount of information we get from the guides and the local guides/guided tours makes going to Europe so much more enriching. We had a an itinerary shuffle due to International Museum Day. Due to this we got a 4 hour walking tour of Madrid that normally does not happen on this tour. I feel that this 4 hour walking tour should definitely be incorporated into the tour going forward. It was so wonderful to learn all of the information before going into the museums.

"The panoramic view of Toledo was so amazing - as well as la Sagrada Familia. the forethought of that church by Gaudi was phenomenal. Our local guide in Madrid, Adolfo, was probably the best guide we have had on any of the tours we have taken. His style of storytelling and enthusiasm about his history was something we absolutely loved."

Overall, I enjoyed my tour of Barcelona , Madrid and Toledo. Barcelona highlights were the hotel. Aqua on the beach, 2 museums on Montjuic and Sagrada Familia. Madrid’s Prada and Naval Museum were outstanding. However, one full day’s logistics were disrupted by Madrid’s “ free museum” day which meant large crowds everywhere so our guide had to arrange a full day of walking. Todd did his best but the RS head office should have checked the calendar and rescheduled our visit to Toledo that day.

Barcelona, Madrid & Toledo are great & the RS guides knowledgeable & engaging. However, if you are a single traveler, vegan/vegetarian and/or over 65, consider carefully. My Barcelona room had only a single bed, which would have made it impossible for me to sleep well. Had to book a room next door for another $500+. Decent veg food hard to come by, esp with late lunch & dinner hours in Spain. Pace of tour more frenetic than “active.” Couldn’t make good use of free afternoons/evenings: too tired!

Very good! My wife and I select the tours based upon the sites, food, culture and history but if these are the "star" attractions, the host and local tour guides are the "co-stars". Together they take the overall experience from good to great.

"Stepping out of the underground metro in Barcelona near the Plaza de Gaudi, I saw people turning around, immediately looking up, shooting photos and gasping. Turning around to see what they were looking at created my "wow" moment. The Basilica de la Sagrada Familia was breathtaking. It is definitively not your typical Gothic style cathedral. It was bold, creative and inspiring work - I felt like I was having a "spiritual" experience. "

Spain was our first Rick Steves' Tour (1). We took it immediately following a Road Scholar Tour (2). Rick Steves' asked for our name and how many tours we had taken. Road S. asked our name, background, where we were from and why we were on this tour. Road S. gave a 2 hour history lecture intro to Spain. Rick Steves' did not. Road S. filled most days. R. This was a very fast-paced tour -- our fourth with RS -- but with ample free time to explore or slow down on our own. Federico was Magnifico! He effectively herded 22 cats while maintaining his cool and his , colorful, passionate personality. His heartfelt Don Quixote soliloquy rivaled Francesca Caruso's captivating monologue in Rome. We saw many fascinating sites, but, as always, my favorite part of the tour was the group of people we traveled with. Not a grump in the bunch!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Seems as if everyone cites Sagrada Familia and I will, too. I was more moved than I expected in the warm glow of the stained glass and I found the Passion facade fascinating. But my real "wow" moment might have been Federico singing "O Sole Mio" at the group's farewell dinner!"

Excellent tour - This is the ideal way to be introduced to Barcelona, Madrid, and Toledo. Federico Garcia Barroso is an exceptional teacher and dynamic orator who brings art and history to life with an entertaining and engaging flourish of style. Wonderful mix of guided tours and free time. Excellent value, especially regarding food/drink, hotels, and quality of tour guides. RSE once again managed to weed out all the grumpy tourists and leave us only cheerful and pleasant travel companions.

"Listening to Frederic talk about the Guernica painting was really interesting. I have a great appreciation for this painting that I would not have had without the lecture. In addition, I was really taken with the front exterior of La Sagrada Família, So many stories on one side of the building. I was spectacular."

As always, a well designed, efficiently organized tour that gave us a feel for Barcelona and Madrid, insight into the local culture and mindset, and made it easy to enjoy these two beautiful cities. This tour didn't have quite the esprit de corp as previous ones, because Federico was less interested in connecting with group members personally than with his performance as raconteur. But other people seemed to like it, so maybe I'm just an outlier.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I was awed and intrigued by the Gaudi buildings, especially the Casa Batló. The design was so beautiful fantastic, while at the same time focused intently on the activities of everyday life."

We love Rick Steves tours, the philosophy of learning about the culture, the small groups, and the split between free and programmed time. The structure of this tour was a bit different than our other ones in that we weren't on the bus with the other folks much so there was a little less connection between us all. It felt like a major focus of the week was food, and all of the "covered" meals were dinners. The time in the museums and the time for programmed time seemed very constrained.

This is our second RS Tour. We were totally pleased by the professionalism, attention to detail, comfort, pace of the tour. It included a lot of history, art, culture and of course delicious food. The accommodations and amenities of the hotels we stayed in were very nice, we had no complaints. We had a wonderful group of people, who all got along well and were interesting to get to know. The tables for 4-6 for dinner gave us opportunities to do that.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"In Madrid, our guide, Frederico, spontaneously broke out in song, singing O Sole Mio along with a street string quartet on our way home from dinner one night! It was the most amazing surprise! He's good! Frederico was a wonderful combination of a history teacher, dramatic theater performer and music theater actor. He taught us how to appreciate the art, history and culture of the times, be they ancient, medieval to "modern". It was all fascinating and fun!"

It was more than we had ever imagined. We met wonderful people in our group and made great friends. The tour was designed to give us group time and free time and we enjoyed the rhythm of our days. Our tour guide for Spain, Federico, and all the other guides were excellent in conveying their knowledge, wisdom and fun facts along the way. The hotels we stayed in were beautiful and in convenient locations, the meals were plentiful and delicious and the overall experience was fantastic.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Looking out across the dining room at a restaurant one evening and seeing everyone truly enjoying each other, where there had been 24 strangers several days before, had become a cohesive group of happy, engaged and caring people. On our way back from dinner, Federico, our guide, stunned us by singing in his beautiful voice along with the quartet of street musicians on the corner. "Guernica" at the Prado and Federico's explanation of it and the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, also big wows! "

This was our 4th tour, and the best one yet! I loved the fairly fast pace of the tour in combination with adequate "siesta" time. Everything was flawlessly organized, and the guides highly experienced in anticipating and meeting needs as they arose. I think that the locations visited were well chosen, but we could have used more time at the Sophia museum (I wanted to see Dahli while we were there, and didn't have time to go back later because my husband wanted to go elsewhere).

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It was hands-down the Gaudi Basilica and everything we learned about Gaudi! I have been in many basilicas but this one absolutely blew me away. I must tell you about the other wow moment as well, which was completely spontaneous, when Federico stopped on the street to sing with a street band! I have a video of it if you'd like to see :-)"

Was disappointed in our guide, Federico. No covid 19 protocols were followed by him. He was dismissive of us, which greatly diminished our tour experience. This was my rookie tour experience, with any provider. As such I wasn't sure exactly what to expect, but I found our tour guide Jorge Roman to be knowledgable and authoritative, as well as a competent herder of cats. Specialist guides were good too. Meals we generally good, although the last night's was too much food, and not as good as some of the other nights. I learned a lot and all in all, it was a great way to learn about Barcelona and Madrid.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Freddy, our guide in Madrid, gave the best explanation of cubism I've ever heard just before bringing us in to view Picasso's Guernica at the Reina Sofia. This was my 4th RS tour and it was a dandy. Jorge was our guide and did a truly exceptional job (as did the local guides). The hotels were great and the food was wonderful (and plentiful). Jorge taught us history, culture, the love of Spanish food, and knowledge for our alone time. We were also blessed to be with a lovely group of fellow travelers. As per agreed, we wore N95 masks, however, it did have an impact on the quality of our adventure. I hope this policy is reviewed/updates often.

As a predominantly solo traveler I never hesitate to Rick Steves tour. Limiting the number to approximately 25 travelers ensures we get to truly know each other and bonding takes place almost immediately. I never feel alone nor left out. We become a family. I like the buddying up accountability system. It feels good to know someone is always looking out for me. I am an instructor and by nature I seek to be educated. These tours are a One-Stop shop- Fun-N’-Facts. Wear very comfortable shoes.

"The Sagrada Familia, WoW! Without our wonderful Guide, there is no way I would have enjoyed or appreciated the works of this phenomenal man, Gaudi. I’m still in awe and longing to go back. We enjoyed our Barcelona and Madrid tour with Federico as our guide. The tour's focus is on "buildings," meaning cathedrals, museums and architecture. We learned a lot about Gaudi, Picasso, El Greco and Velazquez. There was way more food provided than the itinerary suggested and we enjoyed all of it. My one criticism is that we would have liked more guided time in the Prado museum than we got. It felt like we barely scratched the surface of what was available to be seen.

The concern I had on this tour was the number of people that had just gotten off a cruise ship and came directly to the tour. Several states there was Covid on the boat. Within days I got Covid and had to stay in Spain an additional 9 days, after 4 Covid shots. We filled out a paper at the orientation with the date of our Covid test (that day) but none were verified.

When To Go & Weather

Barcelona and Madrid are lively cities to visit nearly year-round. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for combining the convenience of peak season with good weather, lighter crowds, and long days. Visiting between November and March offers the benefit of missing out on the sweat, stress, and crowds of the tourist season, along with cooler weather.

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your confirmation email as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Barcelona (BCN) and out of Madrid (MAD) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Spain.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options to get to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Spain guidebook.
