Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Portugal

We'll gather at our Porto hotel at 3 p.m. for a short "Welcome to Portugal" meeting, followed by an orientation walk through our neighborhood and the vibrant Bolhão Market. Tonight, we'll get to know one another over dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Porto.

Day 2: Savoring Proud Porto

This morning we'll take a walking tour of Porto's riverfront Ribeira district, including the lavish rooms of its Stock Exchange Palace, the exquisitely gilded Church of São Francisco, and São Bento train station. Then we’ll enjoy a peaceful cruise on the Douro River, floating under many of Porto's majestic bridges. The afternoon and evening are all yours to wander through Porto's lively city center — or seek out some sipping at a port-wine lodge.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Boat: ¾ hour. No bus. Sleep in Porto.

Day 3: Douro Wine Country

After breakfast, we'll board our comfy, spacious bus and drive to Portugal's most famous wine-making region: the lush, green Douro Valley. We'll stop for a vineyard tour, port-wine tasting, and lunch at a historic family estate and winery (quinta) with spectacular views, before making our way to our hotel. Tonight, you're free to relax, sip, and savor the sunset.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in the Douro Valley.

Day 4: Classic Coimbra

Today we'll drive through more terraced wineries on our way out of the Douro Valley and toward our next destination: Portugal's historic capital of Coimbra. After settling into our hotel, we’ll make our way to Coimbra's steeped-in-tradition, 700-year-old university, which features a palatial library that's a bibliophile's dream — with 30,000 books from the 18th century. This evening, you're free to enjoy dinner on your own in the heart of Coimbra's Old Town.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Coimbra.

Day 5: Tiles and Tunes of Coimbra

We'll start the day learning about Coimbra's treasured tradition of hand-painted tiles, before enjoying a performance of the unique, local style of fado…more likely devoted to revolutionary student ideals than lost love. The rest of the day is yours to explore Coimbra’s Arab-flavored Old Town with its twisty maze of narrow lanes, old-timey shops, tiny restaurants, and vibrant market — and make your own discoveries in this delightful college town.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Coimbra.

Day 6: Batalha and Fátima

Today, we'll continue our journey south, stopping in Batalha to visit its grand Monastery of Santa Maria, a symbol of Portuguese pride and its victory (with help from English archers) over Spanish domination 600 years ago. Then we'll visit the nearby pilgrimage site of Fátima — a favorite of Pope John Paul II — where three children shared controversial visions of the Virgin Mary in 1917. We'll finish in the quaint town of Tomar, where we'll take an orientation walk along the lush riverside and enjoy dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Tomar.

Day 7: Tomar's Medieval Mystique

This morning we'll take a tour of Tomar’s Castle of the Knights Templar and Convent of Christ. Built in the 12th century by the mysterious and powerful Knights Templar, its stunning Oz-like circular church is where knights would go to be blessed before battle. The rest of the day is free for you to ride a tuk-tuk, nurse a coffee at the edge of the town's checkered main square, or just wander Tomar's time-warp streets and enjoy its old-world scene.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Tomar.

Day 8: Olives, Oaks, and Bones

Today begins with a memorable visit to a working farm and estate, where you'll have a chance to meet farming locals, taste-test their olive oil (and wine), and wander their forest of cork oak. After lunch on the estate, we'll continue south through the laid-back Alentejo countryside to the history-rich university town of Évora, where we'll tour the preserved-in-whitewash old core, marveling at its Corinthian-columned Roman Temple and its poignant Chapel of Bones. The rest of the day is free for you to explore more of Évora.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Évora.

Day 9: Portugal's South Coast

Today's destination is Portugal's dramatic, sun-baked south coast: the Algarve. Along the way, we'll stop at Cabo São Vicente — Portugal's "Land's End" and Europe's southwestern most point — before continuing to salty, maritime Sagres to explore its weatherbeaten fortress and have lunch together at a historic Pousada. After arriving at our hotel, your guide will orient you to our neighborhood before setting you free for the evening.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in or near Lagos.

Day 10: Free Day in the Algarve

You'll take a "vacation from your vacation" today to explore the sandy beaches, jagged rocks, and rolling green hills of the Algarve. Luxuriate in the breezy resort vibes of Lagos…rent a kayak to paddle the crystal-clear waters of the Atlantic…take a boat cruise along the coast to get a different view of the seaside cliffs…or kick back and soak up the sun at one of the areas many fine beaches.

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No bus. Sleep in or near Lagos.

Day 11: Seafaring Belém

After breakfast, we'll drive to Lisbon — stopping at its seafaring Belém District, home to many of the city's most historic buildings. Sticking close to the waterfront, we'll learn about Portugal's golden age of exploration at the 16th–century Belém Tower and heroic Monument to the Discoveries and discover how faith, money, and a knack for sailing combined to build the dazzling Monastery of Jerónimos. Then, after settling into our hotel, the rest of the day is all yours to explore the city and find dinner on your own in Lisbon's exciting food scene.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Lisbon.

Day 12: Neighborhoods of Lisbon

This morning we'll take a walking tour through Lisbon's colorful downtown neighborhoods — the Bairro Alto, the Alfama, and the Baixa. Along the way we'll learn about "village" Lisbon's neighborhood life, the poetry of the revered Fernando Pessoa, and Portugal's "Carnation Revolution," which peacefully ended nearly five decades of fascist rule in 1974. You'll have the rest of your afternoon free to visit any of Lisbon's "niche" museums (tile, fado, port wine, and other Portuguese specialties). Tonight we'll regroup to enjoy a soulful fado performance and a farewell dinner, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Saúde!

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Lisbon.

Day 13: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Your guide will help steer you to Lisbon's airport, which is an easy metro or taxi ride away. Or you may want to stay for further Portuguese adventures on your own. Adeus!

Physical Demands

Our tours are physically active! It's an essential part of the Rick Steves tour experience. On our Best of Portugal in 13 Days tour — among other things — you'll need to happily…

  1. Carry/roll your luggage over uneven pavement (possibly several blocks) and up stairways to reach your hotel, then up several flights of stairs to reach your room.
  2. Be on your feet, walking and standing, for up to four hours, indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
  3. Sleep with street noise and no (or weak) air conditioning.
  4. After orientation and transportation lessons, be able to navigate towns and cities on your own.

Our Tour to Portugal was simply Crazy Amazing and so life changing for in me and my wife’s journey. The sights, the people, the Iberian pork, majestic cork trees, wow port wine, fado, passion for Cristiano Ronaldo and only him, Knights and so much more..All of it massaged in our mind with the bedtime story’s Cristina our loving tour guide whispered on our bus rides…

Weather was perfect, tour guide Maggie was outstanding, driver Pedro was a magician, hotels were charming, and the local guides were fantastic. In short, everything I've come to expect in a Rick Steves tour.

This was our first group tour experience and we were very impressed with our guide, Margaret. From her range of knowledge to her thoughtful suggestions for dining and extra curricular suggestions, to her kind handling of mobility challenged group members, Margaret really made this a wonderful trip.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My "wow" was visiting the Gulbenkian Museum in Lisboa. While it was not on the formal itinerary, Margaret suggested it as an option for a free afternoon and it was an amazing private collection of art, home furnishings and ceramics. Also the Aljube Museum of Resistance and Freedom, which was also mentioned by Margaret as a free afternoon option, was a powerful experience of Portugal's decades under dictatorship and very meaningful in today's rise of fascism."

This was our 16th RS tour and by far the most strenuous. We have taken both the Prague/Budapest and Barcelona/Madrid tours which are listed as "most active" and they pale in comparison to this tour. Virtually the entire tour was steep grades paved with cobblestones or limestone/marble pieces which are slippery when wet. We simply can't understand how this highly strenuous tour was not listed as "most active".

The Heart of Portugal trip was a good overview of this country, from the south to the north. From Lisbon with its interesting Maritime Museum to the arid cork fields to the lush, green beautiful Duoro Valley, we got a very good feel for this maritime country. Our tour guide, Maggie, did an excellent job showing us the beauty and history of her addopted home country. And while quite hilly and "interesting" walking, we woud our ways through the hills to find its interesting culture.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The beauty of the hilly and winding Duoro wine valley was a wow moment for me. The steep and winding roads through the vineyards was amazing and beautiful in its green lushness."

This was my second Rick Steves’ tour, the first being over 10 years ago. Portugal exceeded my expectations with its beauty, interesting history and low key vibes. Even in the larger cities of Lisbon & Porto there was no feeling of “hustle and bustle” or unnecessary street noise. Our guide Fatima was a gem, full of knowledge & so welcoming to her beloved country. She kept us moving all the time. Strenuous walking description was very accurate - many hills & narrow tiled streets!!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The smaller towns between Lisbon & Porto were fascinating! The holy site of Fatima was a wow moment as well as the Knights Templar and the overall charm of Tomar. Particularly enjoyed the history of Coimbra, fado performance and the University as well as its beer loving student population."

This my fourth Rick Steve’s tour and I think this one came up a little short. I’m most impressed by natural beauty and Portugal fell short compared to other countries. There was too much ancient culture, guess I’m just not all that interested in 12th and 13th century events. I found several of the local guides difficult to understand due to their heavy accent. I kept expecting the “vacation within a vacation” event which has always been great on past trips.

This Portugal tour was awesome! One of the characteristics of these tours is the fact that it's limited to a small group, 24 in this one. Who made our tour even better was our tour guide, Todd. He prepared handouts on the activities for each stop with maps of the area and its history plus restaurants recommendations. Such information was extremely valuable getting around in unfamiliar cities which saved a lot of time. I was able to make the best of every moment I was on my own.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The major cities of Lisbon & Porto won me over with their food, port wine and the warm hospitality of their people along with its major museums and monuments holding the history of this beautiful country and its contribution to the world. The fado performances in Lisbon and Coimbra were memorable. The Rovisco Garcia Cork Farm and the Douro Valley Quinta Santa Eufemia winery are not to be missed! "The trip to the Duoro Valley and visit to a family-run, generational vineyard where we were invited, as the special Rick Steve's group, to participate in a pisa a pe (grape stomping), with one of the family members. It was not a 'tourist' event. This is the traditional method of crushing grapes. We were led into large, shallow granite tanks (lagares) where we linked arms, and stomped in a defined pattern to the beat of a drum, singing traditional songs. it was a truly unique experience. "

The tour was a wonderful experience from start to finish. The itinerary was a great mix of history, culture, and beautiful scenery. Each of the cities and towns we visited had its own character and something memorable to offer. The food, wine, and port were excellent, and I tried fresh sardines in Nazaré for the first time and loved them! The hotels were very nice and strategically placed in each city. The group meals were all delicious, and I especially enjoyed the Fado performance.

"Visiting the maritime museum in Lisbon and learning about how Portugal's explorers reshaped the world map during the 15th and 16th centuries. After our tour, our wonderful guide, Claudia, was waiting for us with warm pastéis de nata. Yum! Claudia's knowledge of her country's history and culture is exceptional. She made the past come alive and shared stories about her own family, which gave us a personal look at Portuguese life that we could never have gotten from a guidebook. "

I was very excited to get on this trip because of the preview I watched on Rick Steves Youtube channel. I believe my expectations for Portugal might be too high after the Greece and Italy trip. In Portugal, I enjoyed spending time in Sintra and Porto. I enjoyed a food tour very much in Lisbon via Rick Steve guide book through a 3rd party. The rest of the country is okay but I didn't have a "wow" time. Douro Valley is pretty but too much down time. The trip is a little boring to me.

Overall great experience. 3rd RS tour and will probably do another. We brought friends new to RS touring and they loved it. Our guide Claudia did a fantastic job making our trip feel special. She did a good job of getting the group to meld. She and the other guides we had were passionate about their country and cities. Pleased with the hotel accommodations. Happy we came in earlier to do Sintra before the tour. The actual experiences RS tours provide are part of what makes it special.

"Grape Stomping at the winery in Douro Valley followed by a lunch and Port/Wine tasting was something I will never forget. The owners were so gracious in showing us their love of their family business. So glad Claudia was able to pull this off for us. Seeing the terraces throughout the Douro Valley were gorgeous. I will also never look at a cork in the same way after visiting the cork farm/winery. He gave us such a passionate tour and lunch was delicious. "

Our 6th Rick Steves tour and it matched the wonderful experiences we had on all of our other adventures. Claudia was a phenomenal tour guide who shared her great pride in her country and family experiences to help us all gain a good understanding of the culture of Portugal. Our fellow tourmates were a joy to be with--all such interesting people. We went on wonderful, unique tours plus had time to wander on our own. Hotels were in great locations which made it easy to explore. Great itinerary

Our guide put it in such a relevant, historical presentation that really enhanced our experience. Visiting a cork farm and sharing a wonderful meal with the owner. This was our 8th RS tour, so we knew what to expect, which was a great experience. From big city (Lisbon) to rural towns, and something in-between (Porto), we got a great taste of Portugal. This was my 4th RS tour but my first visit to Portugal. As usual I was impressed by my guides, the hotels, the food, the experiences, the bus transportation and the organization. It was the most physically challenging trip I've been on in a while, the cobblestones are no joke and I've walked Paris in heels. The tour provided a thorough historical, cultural, and culinary experience that demonstrated how Portugal is unique compared with the rest of western Europe. I kept saying to myself "I didn't know that" multiple times every day. Geography was history, from using the sea for sustenance and exploration, from the influence of the Moors, Spain, France, and Great Britain on architecture, religion, and commerce, and from its own 20th century politics of dictatorship and revolution.

The Templars' historical story is fascinating, but the wow was the Oratory chamber inside -- decorated with frescoes and symbolic and religious representations. I had not seem anything like it in western Europe."

Portugal is a beautiful country. The people are friendly. Our guides were very knowledgeable. I was a bit on information overload! was surprised at how hilly the cities are. You definitely have to be in good shape for this tour. Our hotels were all A+. The food was so-so in my opinion. Lots of pork and vegetables... and wine. LOTS of wine. As always, the bus was very comfortable. Our lead guides felt like family as did our fellow travelers.

Todd was very organized and provided much information. This would be outstanding if the time spent at Fatima would have been more aligned to hours of operation and/or that information was provided in first meeting. We felt the introduction meeting lacked details that were needed by us and missed the whole responsibility of the "Buddy System" explanation. Girard (our guide in Ireland) had done much better in this area.

Our tour was greatly enhanced by our excellent guide Maria Jose. Her calm demeanor, her knowledge of Portugal and her attention to detail was amazing. Portugal, in general, is not a flashy, fast paced, high tech country. It is interesting in its history, it's earnest hard working people who love their country, and it's laid back pace. The cork farm, pottery factory, wine/port farm were all interesting experiences. The local guides also deserve mention as they all were excellent.

Highlights included the Maritime Museum which was full of amazing sailing history, mapping, actual boats and ancient cannons in Lisboa to the dynamic beauty of the Douro Valley.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Learning that Portuguese sailors discovered how to sail upwind by using triangle sails. And also that they discovered sailing nearly to Brazil and then heading to the Cape of Good Hope was the most efficient and successful way to get to the Indian Ocean to further their spice trade as well basically discover & reign over the world in the 1500 & 1600’s. Reading “Conquerors” now to fill in the holes. What they did in the name of Christianity was not always very Christian! "

Portugal was wonderful to explore. Our tour guide, Marguerite (Maggie), was excellent. I would say the only downside was there were several cathedrals and churches explored. They began to look alike after awhile.

It was very enjoyable going to the port wine estate and learning about the wine making techniques."

Very important context, I am 33 and I was traveling with my parents, so perhaps I am not the typical target market for Rick Steves Tours. It was a great experience from start to finish. Our tour leader Todd was extremely knowledgeable and so enthusiastic about Portugal. All of the local guides did a great job as well. Our driver Andre was very competent driving on those winding roads. As always I felt like we wouldn't have had the same experience if we weren't on a RS tour. Todd was also very helpful with suggestions for our time away from the group. Speaking of the group, everyone was amazing. Great people.

This was an average Rick Steves Tour which still puts it way above other tours. I thought 3 days in Lisbon was way too much. There is not much going on. The museum was closed and we spent two mornings walking around Lisbon looking at buildings from the outside. Cut Lisbon back to one day unless you are going to include the castle. The Heart of Portugal Tour was our fifth Rick Steve's adventure. We were really impressed by our Guide, Claudia. We liked everything about the Tour including the itinerary, choice of hotels, and the food. Right from the Day 1 Orientation meeting Claudia made it evident she loved what she does and made sure we were all well informed with each day's events. The itinerary was laid out perfectly with the right amount of time at each stop, giving us plenty of free time to explore.

"There were several "wow" moments, my top two would be the Fado performance in Lisboa and the trip to the Cork Farm. It was heart-warming seeing the young ladies and men carrying on a tradition that goes way back in the Portuguese history. And the Cork farm was similar in the fact that this land had been in the same families hands for many generations. It was also very interesting in learning how the Cork was harvested and all of the products that are created with the cork and nothing is wasted. "

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Portugal guidebook.
