Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles of walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Spain

We'll gather at our Barcelona hotel at 5 p.m. for a "Welcome to Spain" get-together. Then we'll join the locals in their nightly ritual and head out for an orientation paseo (stroll) through our neighborhood. We'll finish by getting acquainted over a tapas-style dinner together. Sleep in Barcelona (2 nights). No bus. Walking: light.

Day 2: Lively, Artistic Barcelona

This morning, we'll explore Barcelona's maze-like Barri Gòtic, from its Roman foundations to the spires of its elaborate, Gothic cathedral. Then we'll hop the subway to Gaudí's towering, dizzying Sagrada Família. Afterward you'll be free to experience more of this magnificent city on your own, from the Picasso Museum to Gaudí's playful Park Güell. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 3: Masterpieces of Madrid

All aboard! After breakfast we'll take one of Europe's speediest trains (the AVE) to Madrid. We'll tour one of Europe's premier art museums — the masterpiece-packed Prado — where you'll see paintings by Velázquez, Goya, El Greco, and others. Later we'll stroll the lively streets of our neighborhood and enjoy dinner together. Sleep in Madrid (3 nights). Train: 3 hours. Bus: 2 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 4: Madrid and the Royal Palace

This morning we'll meet our local guide for a tour through the sumptuously decorated Royal Palace. With 2,000 rooms, acres of luxurious tapestries, and a king's ransom of chandeliers, this is truly one of the great palaces of Europe. Our walking tour will continue through Madrid's bustling Puerta del Sol to its elegant Plaza Mayor. Your afternoon and evening are free to visit the Reina Sofía, stroll through the majestic Retiro Gardens (Madrid's most popular park), and maybe even catch a performance of zarzuela, Spain's delightfully light opera. No bus. Walking: strenuous.

Day 5: Day Trip to Segovia

We'll venture out of the city by bus, up to the history-rich town of Segovia and its beautifully preserved Roman aqueduct. After a walking tour of the aqueduct and town, you'll have free time to wander and visit Segovia's medieval Alcázar fortress. We'll regroup this afternoon for lunch to savor a Segovian specialty together — roast suckling pig. Then we'll return to Madrid in time for you to enjoy dinner on your own. Bus: 3 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 6: Historic Toledo

It's a short bus ride to Spain's old capital city of Toledo (and back in time about 500 years). We'll take a morning walking tour that includes Toledo's magnificent cathedral, the medieval Sinagoga del Tránsito, and El Greco's Burial of the Count of Orgaz at the Santo Tomé Chapel. This afternoon and evening you'll have plenty of free time to enjoy the winding streets and varied sights. Sleep in Toledo (1 night). Bus: 1 hour. Walking: strenuous.

Day 7: La Mancha and Granada

Today we'll drive through windswept "Don Quixote country," stopping to sniff the saffron and admire a whitewashed windmill or two. Our destination is Granada, where we'll begin with a visit to the ornate tombs of world-changing Ferdinand and Isabel, who reigned over a new age of religious zeal at home and exploration of the "new" Americas. Then we'll head up the Albayzín hill for dinner together and enjoy a sunset view of tomorrow's treat — the Alhambra. Sleep in Granada (2 nights). Bus: 5 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 8: Moorish Treasures of Granada

We'll spend our morning learning about Spain's Islamic legacy as we tour the sprawling palace and garden complex of the Alhambra (when available) with a local expert. This last and greatest of Europe's Moorish palaces will awe you with its grace and artistry. This afternoon and evening you'll be free to linger longer at the Alhambra, and make your own discoveries along the colorful streets and alleyways of Granada's Old Town. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 9: Ronda

Today's destination is the hill town of Ronda, home to Spain's oldest bullring and its most breathtaking gorge. This afternoon we'll visit the 5,000 seat bullring and have free time to explore Ronda's Moorish and Mercadillo Quarters, linked together by the famous gravity-defying stone bridge (towering over the rubble of an earlier one that wasn't). Then we'll enjoy dinner together at our hotel and sleep near Ronda (1 night). Bus: 3 hours. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 10: Spain's Pueblos Blancos

Today we'll wind our way between the olive groves and whitewashed villages of Spain's pueblos blancos. We'll head into the countryside to visit a bull farm and learn about Spain's most controversial pastime. Then we'll tour an olive oil mill, where we'll discover the traditional methods of producing this extra-virgin export. After a rustic lunch together, we'll press on to the quintessential hill town — Arcos de la Frontera — where we'll share dinner together and sleep (2 nights, group may be split between two hotels). Bus: 2 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 11: Sherry and Horses

It's a short hop to Jerez de la Frontera, where we'll tour an Andalusian horse farm. After learning all about these magnificent creatures and their connection to the local culture, we'll have some free time in Jerez to explore and find lunch. This afternoon, we'll return to lovely Arcos to relax and sample the region's other famous specialty, sherry. Dinner is on your own this evening. Bus: 2 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 12: Sevilla's Barrio Santa Cruz

This morning we'll drive directly to Sevilla, Spain's most flamboyant and atmospheric city. We'll begin our visit with a guided tour that takes us from the famous Macarena (Weeping Virgin), to the world's largest Gothic cathedral. You'll have time to do more exploring on your own before we regroup tonight for a performance of sultry, swirling flamenco. Sleep in Sevilla (2 nights). Bus: 2 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 13: Sevilla's Royal Alcázar

We'll start today with a tour of the beautifully Moorish-style Alcázar palace, the Sevilla home of the Spanish royal family for the past 500 years. Afterward, you're free to walk in the footsteps of Carmen and Don Juan, linger in Sevilla's charming squares, or stroll along the romantic Guadalquivir River. This evening we'll share travel memories and toast new friends at our final dinner together, capped off with a carriage ride through the streets of Sevilla. Salud! No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Sevilla's airport is a bus or taxi ride away with easy connections throughout Europe. Alternately there is an AVE train to Madrid to continue your Iberian adventures on your own. Hasta luego!

Spain is a fantastic country! we had high expectations and expectations were wildly exceeded. The tour was so well done---easy travel, hotels perfectly located, restaurants were awesome---delicious with perfect wines. The 'side trips' and special RS 'events'(Bull farm--with Matador, Horse farm, wine tastings, horse carriage ride, breakfast in a Spanish home) made the trip that much more special and we connected with local people in ways we would have never done on our own.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"In a country full of 'wows' picking one wow moment is not easy but it's a toss up with dinner overlooking the Alhambra Palace in Granada as the sun slowly set (stunning) and the entire town of Sevilla (also stunning)"

Although I was fighting allergies, a possible viral cold and extreme swelling of my feet, ankles and calves due to the salt level of the great food, overall the tour was great. I'd been to some of the locations in the past, but seeing them with our guide and the local guides was far superior to seeing them on my own.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite WOW moment was visiting the Andalusian horse farm. I'd never been around that many horses at one time before. The young ones were so sweet and the moms were friendly, too. Only slightly below that WOW was visiting the matador's farm where we saw horses, bulls, cows and calves all in the same place. I've never been opposed to bull fighting and learning more about how all the animals are raised, trained and treated plus the sport/art itself was fascinating."

Spain was everything I hoped for and more. We took your Best of Italy tour last year, and although Italy may have been more spectacular--Spain was more endearing. The people of Spain seem less resentful of tourists and more willing to engage with them. The tour itself was neither too fast nor too slow; the cultural experiences were interesting and the accommodations were lovely. Highly recommend it to anyone.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Jogging through Retiro Park in Madrid one afternoon. I imagined myself a local as I ran past picnickers with bottles of wine (for who goes to a public park without wine?), considerate teens on scooters, well-dressed seniors with little dogs, and seemingly endless paths that wound through well manicured gardens."

I had done this tour in 2013, and chose it again to bring my nieces. It was great. The hotels in Barcelona and Madrid and Sevilla were better than in 2013. Also, the addition of the bull farm was great. Agustin was a great guide. He was friendly and professional. There were a couple of very difficult people in our group, and he handled the situations very quietly and calmly.

"Wow moments were visiting with local people and businesses the are so essential to the Spanish culture such as the bull farm (meeting the owner and matador), the Andalusian horse farm and the olive farm. I just wish the Stradivarius instruments were able to have been on an open display and not encased in glass. First our guide Javier Menor was fantastic! He was on time, courteous, friendly, and worked hard to ensure a good time for everyone. He educated the group on all aspects of Spanish culture, life and the additional guides brought in were superb also. We all appreciated the extra goodies he brought for tastings, and his recommendations on where to eat to taste the best food items he was so proud of. There were people who were on their first tour and one who was on her 17th tour. It was great!

I have used your guidebooks to plan trips and had high expectations for this, my first tour. I can say unequivocally that it exceeded all expectations! I believe my great experience happened because of: Javier, our amazing tour guide, all of our expert local tour guides, our friendly, diverse, inclusive group, all of the opportunities to use my Spanish, all we got to see and do, the big and small surprises along the way, our luck with the weather, the awesomeness of Spain!

I loved it. I went with my grandma and my sister. We were the youngest in the group but it didn't matter we still had fun and I enjoyed talking to everyone. I like how the tour gave you some time before dinner to do your own thing and relax after a long day.

Our tour guide, Javier Menor was the ultimate tour guide. Professional, humorous, charming, caring, and knowledgeable can only begin to describe Javier. The itinerary was well paced and gave time to see the sights and to explore on or own. I really have no other words to say, except I was really blown away by this trip. I wish I hadn't waited so long to take a Rick Steves tour. If the other tours are as good as this, then sign me up for all of them! The local guides were also top notch.

There were so many wonderful experiences on the Spain tour that were interesting, fun and educational. As a single traveler, I sometimes go into a trip with a bit of apprehension, not knowing anything about the group. I am pleased to say that on the RS Best of Spain tour that I recently went on, everyone, without exception, was wonderful and a lot of fun. The group was small, only 15, which I was told, was unusual, but great for us. The sites we visited, from Roman ruins and aqueducts, art galleries, Churches, Cathedrals and Basilicas to bull rings and olive groves, were a daily history lesson

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Most folks would say their "wow" moment was the Sacrada Familia, and I wouldn't disagree, however, that was just one. A few others would be: the Royal Palace in Madrid, Segovia's Roman aqueducts, Toledo's Cathedral (the magnum opus of the Gothic style), the windmills outside the town of Consuegra, Capilla Real (Isabel & Ferdinands tombs), meeting the matador, Rafael Tejada, at his Reserva Tauro, Cathedral of Sevilla (Columbus' tomb) and the Real Alcazar in Sevilla"

This is the perfect type of trip for someone like me, who is a widow. I love the history and the chance to explore ancient sites and medieval towns, but with the reassurance that there is someone there for me if I need help. The sense of comfort in the unknown is a testament to the Rick Steves way of traveling. I always felt safe, knew I had a nice place to stay, reliable transportation, but also the freedom to explore on my own, experience the local culture, and look forward to the next day.

"There were so many, it is hard to pick. The hacienda we had to ourselves outside of Ronda was so beautiful, but the hotel in Ronda on the gorge was great too. The dinner overlooking the Alhambra at night was delightful. The Royal Palace, which we had to ourselves on our tour was the most beautiful I have ever seen. The Alhambra, of course, is so special. It seemed every day we though we had experienced the highlight, and the next day there was yet another one."

It was an awesome trip, each day was exceptional. I loved all the expected tourist sites like the Sagrada Familia and the Ahlhambra and the things one doesn't see on any other tour, like the visits to the family homes in Salinas, the olive producer, and the saffron merchant in La Mancha. Jorge always had new things to show us, and new things to taste. He was a wonderful guide and so conscientious about my friends, one vegetarian and one with sulfite allergies.

This is my second 'Best of..' tour. Frankly I'm amazed at the amount of history, culture, art and immersive experiences that you've been able to plan for these tours. Certainly countries like France and Spain have a lot to offer but Rick Steve's tours and their guides deserve credit as well. Our guide this time, Roman, was wonderful. I enjoyed the Spain tour. Although I would have liked having more time to spend in several of the cities, I felt like I received a good introduction to Spanish culture and history. I visited Spain in 1970, as a 20-year-old student, while Franco was still in power. I was too young to understand much of the history, but I knew I would come back some day. I'm sorry that it took 50 years to do that, but I was happy to see how vibrant and resilient the Spanish culture is. I thank Amanda for that.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Alhambra was my most emphatic "WOW" moment, as I expected it to be. I have wanted to visit it since my childhood, so it was a dream come true. We really felt the tour gave us an authentic "taste" of this fabulous country. We got urban and historical perspective as well as rural and family perspective of Spain ????. Amanda really insured we received optimal experiences and a warm fellowship among our group. The guides were excellent at all our locations. Plenty of free time allowed us to explore on our own after we had seen the "must sees" in each location. We especially appreciated the stay in Ronda. It was a great way to decompress.

Amanda is an excellent guide: she set a positive tone for the tour by inviting everyone to introduce themselves and express their personal goals for the ensuing tour. Then she endeavored to assist everyone in reaching their objectives. One of our tour members was suffering from prostate cancer and Amanda made a point of allowing everyone WC stops frequently at the beginning of every side tour. She was sensitive and compassionate. That is important to me.

Segovia especially was packed with wonderful surprises--the cathedral, the lovely baking nuns, the storks, the castle, the aqueduct and the great lunch at Meson de Jose Maria."

Our 10th Rick Steves tour, the 2nd to Spain (2005), this exceeded most of our expectations and was a considerable upgrade from our previous experience in this country. The walking tours, the sights selected, the hotels and the meals were all improved over the prior version. Major takeaways: Barcelona a definite hedge over Evola and Lisbon; limiting Segovia to a day trip was fine; and skipping the Valley of the Fallen and the Escorial were also good decisions. (Continued in blocks 15 and 16.)

"The dinner opposite the Alhambra. The Alhambra itself, the cathedral in Toledo, the Royal Palace in Madrid, the Royal Chapel in Granada, the stay in the countryside outside of Ronda, and the visits to the bull farm and olive orchard were all close seconds."

Spain in 3 words - ham, bulls, Catholics. I had expected a very depressed country, due to being under Franco rule for so many years. Not so. Spain was modern, classy, vibrant, energy efficient, clean, and respectful. I was disappointed to find out how popular bull fighting is and to see it is so accepted. Barcelona is the only place where it is outlawed. The trip to the bull farm was incredibly depressing. We were on our way to the next hotel and could not skip the farm.

"I think the night that I simply wandered around Granada by myself and heard some Leonard Cohen music coming out of a shop. I went in and stood and chatted with the shop owner. He said he was a Moroccan and was very proud of it. I wish we could have taken the ferry to Morocco as we were so close and you could so feel the Moroccan influence the further south we went in Spain."

The Best of Spain tour was truly amazing and enjoyed it immensely - it had the right mix of experiencing the big cities and the hillside towns with whitewashed homes. The balance of group activities and the free time to explore on your own was also a big plus of the tour. Every one in the group was fun to travel with and Helen did an outstanding job leading the group and a great teacher of Spanish art and history. Also enjoyed her sense of humor.

"There were a number of several "wow" moments, but those that stood out were the Alhambra visit, the Sagrada Familia and the cathedrals in Toledo and Seville. We had the opportunity to attend Mass at the Seville cathedral and the fact that it was a "special" mass being the feast day of St. Ferdinand, their patron saint, made it more memorable."

I've been to Spain before, but never experienced it like this, exciting, informative, and fun. The itinerary was an excellent mix of large metropolitan cities and small rural towns, from major museums and grand cathedrals to small town produce markets and olive oil farms, from elegant dinner with a view of the Alhambra to very simple breakfast at Encarnacion's kitchen in a small town in Andalusia. I immersed myself in Spain's history, traditions, and cultures. Thumbs up to Helen, our tour guide.

This was the best Rick Steves' tour I've taken (#4). It was the perfect blend of big cities and small towns - structured time and free time - planned sightseeing (museums) and spontaneous joy (paseo strollers and Sardana dancers). The city hotels were centrally located - easy to catch the metro or walk - had great breakfasts - and helpful, kind staffs. The hotel in the countryside outside Ronda was a lovely and welcome break (and so nice, I might come back on my own sometime).

Favorite "WOW" moment

"In Madrid, I took a break from the Royal Palace tour and found myself walking beside a protest march. It was the first day of parliament and two elected representatives had been jailed for their activities related to Catalan independence. The large group was protesting their incarceration - media was everywhere - politicians being interviewed, noise. Past all this, at the end of the street, a small group of older (my age) folks were gathered and began singing a song of peace and unity."

Great experience. Exceeds expectations. I especially liked Helen, our guide. She went out of her way to make sure our trip was comfortable and fun. The excursions were educational and fun. The dinners were wonderful. We had a fun, adventuresome group that made our trip so nice. Loved those people! Spain is glorious and beautiful. The hotels, my gosh, were stunning, especially Ronda. Clearly, Rick Steves is the "go to" travel group. I loved the bus driver. We all enjoyed Isreal.sic?

"I liked the breakfast with our host in Ronda. The cathedrals were stunning. I did get tired, but they were worth it. I liked the Flamenco dancers. I did change my mind somewhat about the bull farm. I realize this is part of the culture of Spain. I still would never go to a bull fight and think they are barbaric, but try to keep an open mind about the "sport". I also liked the Morocco shopping district."

For me this was a tour of a life time. I have never been to Spain before. I was fortunate enough to arrive in Barcelona four days before the tour started, using Rick Steve's Barcelona guidebook. I was able to see many of the sights before the tour. From the very first I knew Robert (our guide) was special and the participants were going to be great companions. While most of the trip was central and southern Spain, it's okay because now I am excited about returning to nothern Spain and Portugal.

The itinerary gave a first timer to Spain a good overview of the country - history, heritage, cultural(art, food, architecture), current life. We were blessed with great weather in May and so Spain shone at its best. This was our 12th RS tour and all I can say is this trip was a blast from cradle to grave. We walked, ate, drank, danced, laughed and slept (have to love those siestas) our way through Spain! A terrific mix of "big cities" and charming villages coupled with a great group of travelers transformed what we thought would be another interesting trip/vacation in to a truly spectacular adventure. The tour leader for our adventure, William, was simply terrific and brought Spain to life for us all.

These review comments reflect the opinions of myself and my husband, Jim. We have never been disappointed with a Rick Steves tour, and this one was as fulfilling as our previous ones. We had the hustle and bustle of the big cities, but also enjoyed the peacefulness of the small hillside towns. What more can you ask for ?

The pace was good except for the day in Madrid when we had to tour the Royal Palace and the Prado Museum on the same day. It was unavoidable due to circumstances but it was a very long day.

The tour was through and covered most of the areas we wanted to see in Spain. There was adequate free time to do things on our own. There were 28 people on our tour. At times this seemed like too many. When walking in the city we were strung out so that the ones at the end of the line were out of range of the headsets.

We hit almost all the highlights in each city. We ran into some difficulties with scheduling because of national or city holidays causing some highlights to not be available: Park Guell closed on Sunday, Reina Sofia closed on Tuesdays and closed early on Wednesday due to holiday. That being said, the tour gave me a sense of really coming to know Spain. As always, feeling to need to go back to fill in the rest. :-)

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I was most interested in the Alhambra. I had visited in 2006 on my own. That, surprisingly, was NOT my wow moment. Instead, it was the Sevilla Alcazar. The moorish architecture and design was every bit as beautiful as the Alhambra but since it is younger and was better protected from weather, the color worked in the design is still very vibrant."

She was delightful as was her brunch. 2.In Barcelona, after we got out of the subway, Amanda suggested that we not look immediately at the Sagrada Familia. Visiting Spain has been on my to-do list for some time now and the Best of Spain in 14 days Tour did not disappoint! We arrived a day late, due to airplane mechanical issues, (yes, always buy travel insurance!), but the rest of the trip was wonderful. Any of the "guest" guides along the way were also very informative. The pace is doable but good shoes are a must!

Well organized and offered a variety of experiences: culture, artistic, architectural and food wise. The local guides were passionate and well knowledge in bringing programs and history alive. Most favorite was the brunch we shared with a local family in Ronda, where we had to communicate with each other; that was a very exciting moment. "Maybe the bull farm, mostly because it was so opposite of what I was expecting, it was extraordinarily clean and pleasant ... I felt the tour itinerary was poorly planned. A day to see the bull fight ring in Ronda??? Really. A day day to see an Andalusian horse farm??. A day in Jerez without going to a Sherry estate?? Why not? The visit to the bull farm was great and showed both a bull ring AND Andalusian horses Went to Cordoba on our own after the tour. I seems unconscionable that this historic city with the amazing Mezquita was not on the tour. It easily could have been without the horses and bull ring.

This is our tenth RS tour and probably the most unique, in that we had three RS tour guides during the tour. They had to fill in for the scheduled tour guide who had unexpected medical issues. They were all wonderful and coordinated well in the hand-offs. I didn't feel in the least short-changed by the lack of a permanent guide. In fact, I think we benefitted from the various perspectives and styles. As always, we also had a great group of tour mates as well.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"This is always a hard question to answer, but I'm going to say that it was the interior of the Sagrada Familia. There are many tours of churches on RS tours, but this was different. I think the trip was a testament to the Rick Steves organization. We had 3 different tour guides, but the tour quality was not impacted. One picked up after the other, seemlessly. Each guide had a different personality and a little different approach to guiding, but it worked out well. Had 3 different guides because the one we were supposed to get took sick. Maybe we should just not have chosen to go to Spain. i mean, really, who wants to eat ham for breakfast, lunch and dinner ? I have to admit that there were many interesting and charming moments but parts of the tour were just boring.

This was our second Rick Steves tour and once again we were very pleased with the experience. Unfortunately most of our tour group became sick which took away from our excitement in exploring Spain. Robert, our guide, was so well organized and kept us on track. We loved the various regions we were able to visit. So much territory for two weeks! Each region was like visiting a different country. The others on tour were so compatible and we all seemed to value the physical rigors of such travel. Hotels were always a treat...and well placed in the city/town were we in.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"That is hard to say. I loved Barcelona, its spirit, and the introduction to Gaudi. The Alhambra seemed like a transport to Shambhala. I am now reading about its history. Seeing the bull farm and meeting the matador really opened a door to the culture."

What a marvelous trip! Robert Wright, our tour guide, was unfailingly upbeat and knowledgeable. He was incredibly caring and helpful when 70% of the travelers in our group fell ill with a nasty respiratory virus. (Thanks to one thoughtless tour member who arrived ill on day one but that's another story.) Spain is such a beautiful, vibrant country. The food and wines are scrumptious.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Sagrada Familia in Barcelona is breathtaking in scope and creativity. The interior is magical. I was also amazed by the huge, well-preserved Roman aqueduct in Segovia. And I loved our olive oil tour and lunch with the charming owner of the Oleum Veride."

Helen our tour guide was terrific. She knew history, culture, cuisine and conveyed it all with a terrific sense of humor. Spain itself was awesome. The food, the culture - or should I say cultures, all were revelatory. Our group was terrific and I enjoyed the people a lot. The interaction of the three major cultures in Spain: Christian, Jewish and Moslem was fascinating and illuminating. An important learning for me. The visits to the Moorish or Moorish influenced sights was revelatory for me.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were many wow moments. For me the Jewish quarter in Toledo, the Alhambra in Grenada and the Alcazar in Sevilla were some of the wow! moments. We also had several wow! moments at the dinners in Barcelona, Madrid and Sevilla to mention a few. The Moorish influence and architecture was the most impactful as far as culture and history are concerned."

This was my 5th Rick Steves Tour and it did not disappoint. Compared to other tours I would say that this one is particularly busy. We had three cities where we stayed for only one night so there was more packing up and moving than in other tours. Walking was generally moderate. The hotels were excellent with only one without an elevator (unusual for RS Tours:). Incredible group dinner including a multi-course gourmet meal overlooking the Alhambra and a feast of roast suckling pig!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Although it was freezing cold when we were there, the Alhambra was a highlight. The Alcazar in Sevilla was equally beautiful. I really enjoyed the side trip to Segovia to see the Roman aquaduct, but this may have been because local guide, Javier, sounds like Antonio Banderas:) I will never attend a bullfight. Nevertheless, I was happy to hear the perspective of those who breed the bulls and horses and for whom bullfighting is an important part of their culture."

This tour was a great introduction to Spain and its history. I learned so much. The activity level was very accurate averaging on most days about five miles of walking. Hills are inevitable as are stairs but all manageable if you are in good health. Because you can pace yourself nothing was impossible. I also feel like I gained 10 pounds. Food was very generous. The thing that made this tour even better was the friendliness and congeniality of the group. Many had been on RS tours before.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite WOW moment was the Alhambra. But there were many special moments that created memories. It was during this trip that I realized how important tourism as an industry is to some of these smaller villages and towns that modern day life has left behind. I think that what I takeaway is more how cultures blend and are similar when you step into the everyday world of any country away from the tourist experience. Any tour that gives me a better understanding of others is well worth it."

This visit to Spain was a pleasure. I enjoyed chatting with Amanda and Mitch about life in Spain. I was struck by the societal changes from the Franco era to now, and gradually came to believe that modern Spain could teach the US a lot about inclusion, health care, and city planning. This trip allowed me to learn from experts in every city we visited, and to explore and interact with locals during free time. This trip felt particularly well integrated to me.

"Surprisingly, I most enjoyed meeting the family with the Saffron farm. The genuine kindness and goodwill of our hosts made this brief visit even more meaningful for me. This was our third Rick Steves tour and our first trip to Spain. Great selection of cities and tours but Rick should add Valencia either on the tour or at least as part of his tour books. At the end of the tour my wife and I took the train to Valencia for 4 days and absolutely loved it. Valencia is the third largest city in Spain and worth a visit. A tour like no others! Jorge exposed us to the real Spain, its people, customs and food. And he did it with a personal touch that I haven't experienced in previous tours. I had a wonderful time. I thoroughly enjoyed our tour guide Helen. She went over and beyond the call of duty to give us the best experience in Spain that we could have. It also helped that all the folks on the tour were also very nice and easy to be with at all times.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I have a few wow moments. I was wowed at the overall architecture in every city and town. I loved the cathedral in Toledo, and the windmills in La Mancha. I was also wowed in Segovia overall. The roman aqueducts and the castle were wonderful. The overall town was really cute and beautiful. The suckling pig meal with everyone was really a great ending to a great day. I also enjoyed the evening eating at an outdoor restaurant overlooking the Alhambra, that was eliminated in the distance."

Outstanding trip. Wonderful group of fellow travelers. Very knowledgeable guide. Interesting places to visit. Lots of good food and plenty of wine! What more is there to say! Found the mixture of Moorish, Christian, architecture very beautiful and fascinating to learn about. And the people were so friendly. They certainly know how to live and interact with each other. We should learn from them.

Also, the historical and cultural information from Spain's past to present was very interesting.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I cannot disagree with the WOW moments that others on our tour have posted, but mine was the brunch with the local ladies in Salinas. SPOILER ALERT: Each woman invited us into their home and cooked a special brunch for a few on the tour (the tour was divided up among several women of the village). The best part was the conversation between the woman, who understood very little English, and us, who had, at best, a few years of high school Spanish. It was awesome!"

We have travelled to Europe many times, using Rick Steves' guidebook but this was our first group tour. And it was wonderful! There was just the right amount of time with pre-planned group activities and free time. Some of the best times were serendipitous finds with friends.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Oh, so many wow moments it is hard to say what is my favorite. Of course the dinner with the spectacular view of the Alhambra in Granada was amazing. The Alhambra and the Alcazar in Seville were spectacular. One unexpected moment was the religious procession from the cathedral in Seville to mark the Dia de Hispanidad. When the float with Mary came out of the cathedral, there was a hush over the crowd, then a loud cheer. Very moving."

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Watching them grind corn in the La Mancha wind mill. We saw the whole process from putting the clothe on the windmill arms to bagging the corn flour. It was an unexpected delight and look at how things got done in a bygone era. Helen provided Acorn Liquor tasting and we looked to buy some but could not find any. In Seville one of our group found a small family run store, ProductosdleaSierra.com, that sold it. The wife's family has an acorn farm and makes the liquor."

A perfect combination of an amazing Tour Guide and a wonderful group of travelers – all in all a dazzling array of locations and experiences. Barcelona: Viewing the Sagrada Famillia, Gaudi was a genius. Madrid: An evening of Jazz at the City Center Club was an unexpected delight. Favorite "WOW" moment

Learned about the history of Spain while enjoying the current atmosphere, sights, people and food/drink. It was relaxing to know that the tour hit the must-see sights and provided knowledgeable guides for them to supplement the deep knowledge of the RS guide. Our tour of Spain was our 10th RS tour. We were very pleased with the itinerary, tour guide, local guides, food and wine, special events and the hotels. My favorite part of the tour was the visit to Ronda. The hiking around the gorge was spectacular. Every aspect of the tour was seamlessly planned and [INVALID]d by Javier, our tour guide. This tour was a wonderful experience which immersed us into the past and the present culture and history of Spain. The tour had the right balance of structure and free time, and we had the opportunity to talk with Spaniards who were living there. I value the experiences with the local people, listening to their views about life and local politics, which is why I like Rick Steves' tours. There was a lot of walking (uphill), a lot of churches and museums- all highlighting what Spaniards hold dear

"Hard to say. Sagra Familia, the Don's windmills, views from Arcos, Alhambra at dusk from our dining spot, amazing Moorish architecture, the respect shown to the bulls and cows at the bull farm. The tour was extremely well organized. The hotels were charming and comfortable. The hotels were all centrally located which allowed for easy access to available attractions. The tour guide was excellent and well versed in the history of the various regions. He explained the local customs and had great tips on getting around and protecting against the ubiquitous pick-pockets. The food was absolutely fantastic. I was struck by how inexpensive the restaurants were.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were very many "wow" moments. I was most wowed by the Museum of Modern Art in Madrid. The painting Guernica by Picasso is very moving when taken in context with other paintings nearby and the history of the Spanish civil war. Another would be the fish market in Jerez. The prices for the freshest fish were so incredible. I also liked the oxtail stew at a local tapas restaurant."

It was a great trip with well organized tours not only to the museums, churches and historical sites but also the side trips to ranches, olive oil farms, and wineries. Our accomodations were generally good and what we had experienced with our Heart of Italy tour last year. There were a couple of hotels that may need reconsideration where the room was crowded with one person and almost impassable with two. As stated later wifi was an issue in many of these hotels.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"This had to be the dinner in Grenada on the hill opposite the Alhambra we were going to tour the next day. Dinner was just after sunset, the Alhambra was very visible across the gorge and beautifully lit. We had gone to the top of the hill and participated in the sunset party ritual before walking a short distance to the restaurant. Our only "miss" was the fact that we were about 15 minutes early for the "call to prayer" at the local mosque."

Robert's knowledge was awesome and made the tour so much richer. In general, most people were very friendly and inclusive. Due to an accident a few days before the tour, my traveling companion was unable to come, so I had to adjust to being a single in a mostly doubles group. It took a few days to figure out who was open to "company" and who was not. This was a little stressful for me. I enjoyed most of the venues.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Bull farm was a great surprise to me. I was taken off guard by a gentle, friendly, warm guide and owner who conveyed a great love of the animals, themselves, at the farm and in the country. I was surprised at what a good life they lived and her comment about how feed lot animals live and that only the last 20 min. of the bull's life is hard, really made me think. I am always looking for ways to expand my understanding of people and cultures, and this was a good lesson in being open."

The other travelers were good company and followed the RS philosophy well. The mix of scheduled events versus free time was well thought out, so many outstanding activities and experiences. Great food and accommodations. I haven't done a tour since 1983, and enjoyed this one greatly.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Following the group meal in Barcelona on our second night as we returned to the hotel, we encountered a street festival with dragons/monsters floats that shot fireworks into the crowd. After we all watched for a few minutes, Robert made sure everyone had clear directions back to the hotel, then offered to walk back with anyone who didn't want to stay so the rest of us could stay as long as we wished. The rhythmic music and drums and street dancing combined with the sprays of lights as each group"

In a downpour in Ronda, Susanna made us walk 10-15 minutes through flooded streets, shin-deep in rushing water, and driving rain to the bus station to our bus. Everyone was soaked through. She showed no flexibility in finding an alternative and insisted on a very dangerous action, then showed no remorse and wouldn't even treat us to a hot tea at the hotel."

I enjoyed the trip very much, just the right amount of free time, and group time. I like surprises organized by the tour guide. I enjoy every locations, and I appreciate the detailed planning and whole orchestration to make the trip memorable, packed and full of experience.

The whole Ronda experience the tour went wrong . It is my humble opinion the tour guide made a critical error in judgment in forcing our group to walk through 5 inch rain on cobblestoned sidewalk for 1/2 mile from our rondevu point to the bus terminal. It was an adventure that I so not want to repeat despite me asking her to stop and take cover in a restaurant or nearby shelter. It was incredible the amount of rain that fell in such a short amount of time making no taxis available.

In my opinion, the tour was well paced, taking me to the highlights of a city while allowing me free time to explore on my own. The logistics were well planned. Thank you, Susanna. Having your Spain Guide along was very helpful. And I must say this was the most congenial group of travelers in eight tours with Rick Steves.

"I especially enjoyed touring the Alhambra. What fun to see it all lit up the night before and then walk through the beautiful Moorish Palace and Gardens. To top it off, we had a thunderous rain storm while there. Didn't stop us touring or having fun. Another impressive site was the aqueduct in Segovia."

In general the tour was great. Had the Arcos experience been different this would have been an outstanding tour, best RS tour we have been on. See comments about hotel.

"The Alhambra. The Sagraga. Both were better than expected. Barcelona was amazing! Great city from which to launch the tour."

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in your online customer account. About one month prior to the tour departure, in your customer account you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Barcelona and out of Sevilla ("multicity" on flight-booking websites). Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Spain.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Spain guidebook.
