Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Barcelona

Barcelona, the proud capital of Catalunya, may be the most festive city on the Mediterranean. We'll meet at 5 p.m. at our centrally located hotel for an orientation meeting — then we'll join the party with a stroll through our surprise-filled, people-packed neighborhood before having dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Barcelona.

Day 2: Gaudí and Modernista Eixample

Today is devoted to the swirling architecture of Antoni Gaudí and Barcelona's Modernisme movement. We'll stroll through the Eixample neighborhood, visiting the Block of Discord, on our way to tour the greatest work of Barcelona's master builder — the towering, dizzying Sagrada Família. Afterwards, you'll be free to explore more Art Nouveau delights throughout the city.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Barcelona.

Day 3: Barri Gòtic and Picasso

Today we'll visit the Picasso Museum, Europe's best collection of Picasso paintings, where we'll trace the story of this hometown boy-genius' art as he evolved from a kid who painted like an adult…to an adult who painted like a kid. We'll end our tour in Barcelona's maze-like Gothic Quarter, exploring from its Roman foundations to the spires of its candle-, relic- (and geese-!) strewn cathedral. This evening we'll toast to our last night in Barcelona with dinner together.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Barcelona.

Day 4: Park Güell and a Speedy Train to Madrid

We'll start today with a panoramic bus tour of Barcelona, leading to Gaudí's famed Park Güell. Then it's "all aboard" for one of Europe's speediest trains to Madrid. Upon arrival, we'll meet our bus for a tour of Madrid's major monuments and classy boulevards. Once we've settled into our hotel in the heart of Madrid, we'll take a neighborhood orientation walk, ending with a tapas-style dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Train: 3 hours. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Madrid.

Day 5: Madrid's Royal Palace

Today, we'll take a historical walking tour starting at the very center of Madrid: the bustling Puerta del Sol. From there we'll walk to — and through — the sumptuously decorated Royal Palace. With 2,000 rooms, tons of luxurious tapestries, and a king's ransom of chandeliers, this is truly one of the great palaces of Europe. This evening we'll enjoy a swirling performance of flamenco, before setting you free for dinner on your own.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Madrid.

Day 6: Masterpieces of Madrid

This morning we'll tour the Reina Sofía, Spain's greatest modern art museum and home of Picasso's Guernica. Then we'll make our way to the masterpiece-packed Prado — where you'll see paintings by Velázquez, Goya, El Greco, and others. The rest of the afternoon is yours to stroll through the majestic Retiro Gardens (Madrid's most popular park) or do a little shopping.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Madrid.

Day 7: Toledo

A short bus ride after breakfast will take us to Spain's old capital city of Toledo (and back in time about 500 years). We'll take a traffic-free walking tour that includes Toledo's magnificent cathedral, the historic Tránsito Synagogue, and El Greco's The Burial of the Count of Orgaz in Santo Tomé Chapel. This afternoon you'll have time to enjoy the winding medieval streets of Toledo. We'll catch the bus back to Madrid for our final dinner together to share travel memories and toast new friends. Salud!

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Madrid.

Day 8: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Madrid's airport is an easy bus or taxi ride away — or you may want to continue your Iberian adventures on your own. Hasta luego!

This is a really fun and quick tour that gives you a great introduction to Barcelona, Madrid, and Toledo. The local guides were all very personable and knowledgeable. Our tour guide, William, is super organized and upbeat. He ensured the tour members got to know one another and bonded quickly. He did a great job navigating us through the crowded streets and plazas, including an impromptu detour through the subway when a parade blocked our route to dinner. Fun group and great guide.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We encountered unseasonable rain and chilly wind in Barcelona, making our walking tour a real challenge. We were some sodden, cold tourists by the time we reached the Familia Sagrada. However, it was like stepping into a completely different world when we left behind the gloomy, chilly, wet streets and entered the basilica. The soaring architecture and glorious stained glass windows are simply magical! "

Todd is a fantastic guide! I appreciate the background information he gave us about each city and the plethora of suggestions on what to do on our own time and where to eat. The local guides were knowledgeable, friendly, and made the experience enjoyable. However, one downside was there was so much information given by our guide in Madrid that sometimes we didn't have enough time to explore museums at our own pace. I had a great time and would travel with this group again!

The tour was very well organized; kudos to our Rick Steves tour guide Todd for his excellent guidance throughout. The local tour guides were also excellent; they and Todd were well informed and personable. Everything was delivered as promised. Downsides: the Barcelona hotel was disappointing. Both Barcelona and Madrid were fascinating cities, lots to experience and explore. By the end of the week I was a little overwhelmed with city streets and crowds so really appreciated the day trip to Toledo, and even the time on the bus when Amanda could talk to us more about history and culture. "As far as things, we went to see, it would have to be the Sagrada Familia. However, as someone who’s not a huge art lover. I really loved our primary tour guide Federico for intricately explaining a lot of these paintings and doing it in such a fun and engaging way that I don’t think I will ever forget it "

This was our fifth RS tour and it, like the previous ones was very well planned and executed. Luis did an outstanding job of welcoming the group and providing specific directions on each day's events. his commentaries during our outings were fun and very informative. The guides for our planned outings were well-prepared and added a deep level of insight and understanding of the museums and architecture we visited. The hotels and included restaurants were all wonderful and well located.

"There are so many great moments. Walking into and seeing a rehearsal at Ciutat Vella theater, in Barcelona. It’s a beautiful theater with a glass ceiling like the Bon Marche department store in Paris. Parts of the old Roman Wall from thousands of years ago. Love the thought he incorporated damaged old broken tile into his design, recycling them into great building."

Our tour guide Agustin did a fantastic job of coordinating everything to make sure everything worked smoothly. Our local tour guides were excellent in telling the story of all the places that we visited. We've been on three other RSE tours over the years and the Hotel Gran Via in Barcelona was the nicest place we've stayed in. We can see why Barcelona and Madrid are such popular and interesting destinations in Spain.

"I was anxious to see Sagrada Familia. When I first saw it from the street, I was astounded by all the detail and biblical stories on the exterior, but when I entered the cathedral, I was amazed by the height and massiveness of the columns (giant tree branches) and the light shining through the stained glass windows on the east and west sides. I felt so small in this light filled church. "

I felt like I was getting a college level art history lesson every day. The professional guides gave us political/social/personal context for the art, why it mattered, and how it shaped everything from individual pieces to collective movements. Our guides, particularly the female for the Sagrada Familia and Alfonso in Toledo seemed particularly educated, thoughtful and patient. Both hotels were so quiet and restful even if we were on main streets. Ours was a very congenial group.

Our group events were well thought out and we enjoyed making new friends within our group tourists. We did have one unfortunate issue during our Toledo tour. The tour was very well organized. Frederico was an excellent guide, he was thorough, charming and got us moving when needed. The hotels were nice, though I think I preferred the smaller boutique hotels I stayed at on my Italy trip six years ago. These hotels seemed more like hotels I have been to in America. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour due primarily to our excellent guide, David Gillison, who embodies the Rick Steves' spirit and philosophy of travel--embracing the culture, accepting and understanding the nature of the people, allowing oneself to become a temporary citizen of that place. David created an atmosphere where he opened the door, and provided a safe, natural, friendly pathway to become one with the people. He always wore a smile and projected a warm and friendly attitude at all times.

It was a great tour and I enjoyed everything we did, but it often felt rushed. It was frustrating when we stood outside a building or shop, was told how great it was, and then hustled away without going inside. This was particularly frustrating in Barcelona, when we couldn’t get back or find it again. Having done several RS tours, I don’t remember this happening before. Group dinners were good, but little variety-all similar tapas, and no paella, but the wine and company were great!!

David was awesome, so caring and compassionate, he went above and beyond. I feel like the tour wasn't really "the best" of Barcelona. Very heavy on Gaudi sites. On the last day in Barcelona, we saw several sites on the way out of town that would have been amazing to spend more time at, and know more about. The marina/beach, the Olympic site, the incredible view and the amazing art museum at the top of the hill, where we were given 10 mins to take a picture or two.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Madrid. I was not expecting it to be so vibrant. I had to skip seeing la Guernica, because I REALLY wanted to see the Hieronymous Bosch at the first museum, and we did not have time to explore anything beyond what we were being shown there (el Greco, I believe)."

This was my first Rick Steve's tour. Visiting cultural centers of Spain has been on my wife's bucket list for ages. Even though a city tour was not my top priority, after a week in Barcelona and Madrid with your guides, I was totally grateful for my wife's choice. Having been on European tours with other companies, we really liked the combination of having planned, guided tours of the major sights, together with the independence to explore the cities on our own, which the Rick Steves tour provided

"It's difficult to choose just one. We love art and both enjoyed the Picasso Museum in Barcelona, also our tour of Toledo; but we think the "wow" moment for both of us was viewing Picasso's Guernica at the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid by the local guide. We had a number of guides so I apologize that his name escapes us but he was an amazing guide and storyteller, with a wonderful personality, and his explanation of this piece of art was so moving it nearly brought me to tears. We have traveled often in Europe and South America, but this is our first tour. We chose it given our love of Rick's tour books and the fact we did not have the energy to plan it ourselves for 8 days in Spain. We were very pleased especially with our Tour Guide Federico who was fantastic. He is very passionate about role. Highly entertaining (he sang O Sole Mio at our Anniverary dinner!! His set up to the history of each city was very engaging. He's the best!

I'm so glad I joined this tour! I enjoyed the people, the agenda, very nice hotels and the guides were tremendous. I learned so much. This 8 day tour was in the middle of a two week trip to Spain. Jorge was an excellent tour guide and was clearly well experienced with dealing with groups. The local tour guides were also really good. Good tour. Barcelona is lovely. Madrid has a Spanish NYC vibe, and Toledo is fascinating although overrun by tourists (Yes I see the irony). Felt that what we saw in Barcelona was spot on. In Madrid loved the royal palace and the Prado, not sure why the guide is only allowed to show you the Guernica in the Reina Sophia. Meals were family style and decent. Hotel Gran Via in Barcelona is very nice but rooms and batch are comically small.

Our first trip, so expectations were somewhat non-existent. However, by the end of our tour, I can say that this trip was so marvelous, in every single aspect imaginable - the other people on the trip, the tour guide (s), the sites, the pace, the restaurants that were chosen and particularly the hotels we stayed at, transportation - that we will absolutely do another Rick Steve's tour.

"Visiting the Sagrada Familia. Though not a religious man, this church was a truly spiritual and enlightening experience. To learn of the vision that Antonio Gaudi had in designing this basillica, his affinity for the common man in this vision, the environmental concerns he used as a guide in construction, the various materials used for construction, the play of light on the stained glass, one marvels at the sheer genius of the man. Information from our local guide, Ana, were truly insightful."

This was our 2nd Rick Steves tour of Spain. The first one was in 2011 with Nigel and was two weeks long. This one was just 8 days of Barcelona, Madrid and a Toledo. We took our 17 and 19-yr old granddaughters with us and were pleasantly surprised to see the group was diverse and younger than the typical RS tour group. We took a side trip to Montserrat a day early. Our guide, Jorge, was very energetic and knowledgeable. Overall, it was just the right amount of time to spend with teenagers.

Overall experience was good. We really enjoyed our guide. The hotels were wonderful. All of the planned experiences went off well without a hitch. I would have liked to have some more description of other artists that were in the museums we saw like Dali. We were in this museum with all of the great art work there and only saw the one painting, El Guernica. Would also like to have advance notice of amount of food that rick steves was providing so I could plan my food intake for the day.

Barcelona, Madrid & Toledo are great & the RS guides knowledgeable & engaging. However, if you are a single traveler, vegan/vegetarian and/or over 65, consider carefully. My Barcelona room had only a single bed, which would have made it impossible for me to sleep well. Had to book a room next door for another $500+. Decent veg food hard to come by, esp with late lunch & dinner hours in Spain. Pace of tour more frenetic than “active.” Couldn’t make good use of free afternoons/evenings: too tired!

Overall, I enjoyed my tour of Barcelona , Madrid and Toledo. Barcelona highlights were the hotel. Aqua on the beach, 2 museums on Montjuic and Sagrada Familia. Madrid’s Prada and Naval Museum were outstanding. However, one full day’s logistics were disrupted by Madrid’s “ free museum” day which meant large crowds everywhere so our guide had to arrange a full day of walking. Todd did his best but the RS head office should have checked the calendar and rescheduled our visit to Toledo that day.

The learning that I experienced in all of the locations, i.e. La Sagrada Familia, Picasso Museum, Reina Sofia and Prado, through the tour guides was so deeply appreciated as I grew in my understanding of both the cathedral and the art.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"La Sagrada Familia was a WOW moment for me. After learning about the history of Gaudi and La Sagrada on the outside of the cathedral, we walked inside and were greeted with such vibrant light and color from the stained glass windows. The brilliance of Gaudi, coupled with his deep devotion, were evidenced in the exquisite architecture and the stained glass that complemented the design."

It was a delightful travel experience for me. Our group was filled with curious friendly members most of who were who were serious travelers. The selection of things to see had been carefully selected and my time was well spent. The accomodations were comfortable and close to the “action.” The active guides were excellent. The apprentice guide needs some seasoning.

The tour was great. The tour guides where very knowledgeable and helpful and managed the group very well. The local guides were outstanding and were a wealth of knowable. The hotels were excellent. I did think there was a little too much down time and that they could have organized a group social activity to break the ice a little more. The place that we did visit were all excellent and for the most part the group was fun to be with, I would definitely do a Rick Steve's tour again

Favorite "WOW" moment

"La Sagrada Familia by far was the biggest wow moment. I was the greatest church I have ever seen and I seen over 200 churches including St Peters in Rome . I could have spent hours inside just taken it all in, it was amazing. My only complaint is that it is really crowed."

Had a wonderful time once again on my second Rick Steves tour. Everything is laid out and perfectly organized so I don’t have to plan a THING, which is real vacation to me. The value for the money is outstanding. I’m sure it would cost a lot more if I put it together myself. I always trust that everything I need to see and experience in each country is covered on the tour.

Our guides, Augustin and Luis were wonderful! The local guides were outstanding and very knowledgeable. I learned a lot - the local guides were very interesting. My friend and I flew to Barcelona 4 days early and scheduled some other activities that the RS tour was not covering. I really enjoyed my fellow travelers - what a great group of people. I signed up as a solo traveler willing to share a room. My roommate Claire was very pleasant. I would not hesitate to travel that way again.

"It's hard to pick a favorite. I loved our guide Federico in Madrid. He made history come alive as Carlos III. I will definitely be returning to Toledo - a single morning and afternoon was not enough. The thing I probably enjoyed the most was meeting new people and getting to know the people in our RS group. I live alone and having the interaction with everyone was the best part of my adventure. And the hotels were outstanding. I would stay in either of them again."

The tour was well planned, offering plenty of time for personal time as well as guided tours with excellent local tour guides. The hotels were beautiful and very comfortable (loved the Cava in the lobby of the Madrid H10 Hotel!). The food that we ate and wine we drank were delicious. Augustin kept everything well organized, made everyone comfortable. It was amazing he arranged for us to meet King Charles III who guided us through the Royal Palace in Madrid.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My first "wow" moment came when we emerged from the metro in Barcelona and I saw the Sagrada Familia for the first time. I was overcome with emotion. I have dreamed of visiting Barcelona and the Sagrada since high school, but I never thought I would be there one day. My second "wow" moment was in Madrid at the Flamenco performance. All of the entertainers from the dancers to the guitarist to the singers were immensely talented and left me speechless."

As a first time tour participant, Rick Steves tours did not disappoint! The guides were phenomenal; hotels and staff outstanding; and the itinerary balanced between structured tour sites and free time.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were plenty of amazing moments at each historical and cultural site visited, but I must say the the tour guides were the most amazing asset to the tour. I’ve travelled a fair amount around Europe in the company of Rick Steve’s Guidebooks, which has been phenomenal. This tour with both group guides, and individual location guides was a step beyond excellence. There was a level of expertise and intensity at each site given by the guides. Questions were answered with respect and knowledge!"

The Spain, Madrid and Barcelona Tour was my first Rick Steve's Tour experience. The trip was for my 50th birthday, and my husband and I had a wonderful time exploring a new country on our first group tour. The mix of trips to monuments, churches, and museums was well balanced with trips to beautiful parks. Our walking tours were brisk but refreshing. Most mornings were devoted to guided tours, with plenty of time for rest or sightseeing on one's own. We gathered for convivial group dinners most evenings. Accommodations were centrally located and very comfortable, even luxurious. Good planning on part of organizers meant our trip rolled out flawlessly. We had no worries.

This was a very fast-paced tour -- our fourth with RS -- but with ample free time to explore or slow down on our own. Federico was Magnifico! He effectively herded 22 cats while maintaining his cool and his , colorful, passionate personality. His heartfelt Don Quixote soliloquy rivaled Francesca Caruso's captivating monologue in Rome. We saw many fascinating sites, but, as always, my favorite part of the tour was the group of people we traveled with. Not a grump in the bunch!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Seems as if everyone cites Sagrada Familia and I will, too. I was more moved than I expected in the warm glow of the stained glass and I found the Passion facade fascinating. But my real "wow" moment might have been Federico singing "O Sole Mio" at the group's farewell dinner!"

It was more than we had ever imagined. We met wonderful people in our group and made great friends. The tour was designed to give us group time and free time and we enjoyed the rhythm of our days. Our tour guide for Spain, Federico, and all the other guides were excellent in conveying their knowledge, wisdom and fun facts along the way. The hotels we stayed in were beautiful and in convenient locations, the meals were plentiful and delicious and the overall experience was fantastic.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Looking out across the dining room at a restaurant one evening and seeing everyone truly enjoying each other, where there had been 24 strangers several days before, had become a cohesive group of happy, engaged and caring people. On our way back from dinner, Federico, our guide, stunned us by singing in his beautiful voice along with the quartet of street musicians on the corner. "Guernica" at the Prado and Federico's explanation of it and the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, also big wows! "

This is our second RS Tour. We were totally pleased by the professionalism, attention to detail, comfort, pace of the tour. It included a lot of history, art, culture and of course delicious food. The accommodations and amenities of the hotels we stayed in were very nice, we had no complaints. We had a wonderful group of people, who all got along well and were interesting to get to know. The tables for 4-6 for dinner gave us opportunities to do that.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"In Madrid, our guide, Frederico, spontaneously broke out in song, singing O Sole Mio along with a street string quartet on our way home from dinner one night! It was the most amazing surprise! He's good! Frederico was a wonderful combination of a history teacher, dramatic theater performer and music theater actor. He taught us how to appreciate the art, history and culture of the times, be they ancient, medieval to "modern". It was all fascinating and fun!"

This was our 4th tour, and the best one yet! I loved the fairly fast pace of the tour in combination with adequate "siesta" time. Everything was flawlessly organized, and the guides highly experienced in anticipating and meeting needs as they arose. I think that the locations visited were well chosen, but we could have used more time at the Sophia museum (I wanted to see Dahli while we were there, and didn't have time to go back later because my husband wanted to go elsewhere).

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It was hands-down the Gaudi Basilica and everything we learned about Gaudi! I have been in many basilicas but this one absolutely blew me away. I must tell you about the other wow moment as well, which was completely spontaneous, when Federico stopped on the street to sing with a street band! I have a video of it if you'd like to see :-)"

When To Go & Weather

Barcelona and Madrid are lively cities to visit nearly year-round. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for combining the convenience of peak season with good weather, lighter crowds, and long days. Visiting between November and March offers the benefit of missing out on the sweat, stress, and crowds of the tourist season, along with cooler weather.

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your confirmation email as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Barcelona (BCN) and out of Madrid (MAD) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Spain.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options to get to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Spain guidebook.
