Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to Barcelona
Barcelona, the proud capital of Catalunya, may be the most festive city on the Mediterranean. We'll meet at 5 p.m. at our centrally located hotel for an orientation meeting — then we'll join the party with a stroll through our surprise-filled, people-packed neighborhood before having dinner together.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Barcelona.
Day 2: Gaudí and Modernista Eixample
This morning is devoted to the swirling architecture of Antoni Gaudí and Barcelona's Modernisme movement. We'll stroll through the Eixample neighborhood, visiting the Block of Discord, on our way to tour the greatest work of Barcelona's master builder — the towering, dizzying Sagrada Família. The remainder of your afternoon and your evening are free to explore more Art Nouveau delights throughout the city.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Barcelona.
Day 3: Barri Gòtic and Picasso
Today we'll visit the Picasso Museum, Europe's best collection of Picasso paintings, where we'll trace the story of this hometown boy-genius' art as he evolved from a kid who painted like an adult…to an adult who painted like a kid. We'll end our tour in Barcelona's maze-like Gothic Quarter, exploring from its Roman foundations to the spires of its candle-, relic- (and geese-!) strewn cathedral. This evening we'll toast to our last night in Barcelona with dinner together.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Barcelona.
Day 4: Park Güell and a Speedy Train to Madrid
We'll start today with a panoramic bus tour of Barcelona, leading to Gaudí's famed Park Güell. Then it's "all aboard" for one of Europe's speediest trains (the AVE) to Madrid. Upon arrival, we'll meet our bus for a tour of Madrid's major monuments and classy boulevards. Once we've settled into our hotel in the heart of Madrid, we'll take a neighborhood orientation walk, ending with a tapas-style dinner together.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Train: 3 hours. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Madrid.
Day 5: Madrid's Royal Palace
Today, we'll take a historical walking tour starting at the very center of Madrid: the bustling Puerta del Sol. From there we'll walk to — and through — the sumptuously decorated Royal Palace. With 2,000 rooms, tons of luxurious tapestries, and a king's ransom of chandeliers, this is truly one of the great palaces of Europe. This evening we'll enjoy a swirling performance of Flamenco, before setting you free for dinner on your own.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Madrid.
Day 6: Masterpieces of Madrid
This morning we'll tour — the Reina Sofía, Spain's greatest modern art museum and home of Picasso's Guernica. Then we'll make our way to the masterpiece-packed Prado — where you'll see paintings by Velázquez, Goya, El Greco, and others. The rest of the afternoon is yours to stroll through the majestic Retiro Gardens (Madrid's most popular park) or do a little shopping.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Madrid.
Day 7: Toledo
A short bus ride after breakfast will take us to Spain's old capital city of Toledo (and back in time about 500 years). We'll take a traffic-free walking tour that includes Toledo's magnificent cathedral, the historic Tránsito Synagogue, and El Greco's The Burial of the Count of Orgaz in Santo Tomé Chapel. This afternoon you'll have time to enjoy the winding medieval streets of Toledo. We'll catch the bus back to Madrid for our final dinner together to share travel memories and toast new friends. Salud!
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Madrid.
Day 8: Tour Over After Breakfast
Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Madrid's airport is an easy bus or taxi ride away — or you may want to continue your Iberian adventures on your own. Hasta luego!
Itinerary specifics subject to change.

- Be on your feet, walking and standing, for up to four hours, indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.

This was my first Rick Steves tour. It was a high school graduation present for my grandson. I had hopes that we would have a good time, feel safe, and enjoy each other's company and that of our guides and our fellow travelers. All my hopes and more were fulfilled. Jorge, our guide was personable, careful with us and a joy throughout. The city guides were knowledgeable and entertaining. Jorge told wonderful care of my grandson, the youngest and me, the oldest on the tour.

It was wonderful! I absolutely loved the trip - I chose it mainly because the tour only covered two cities (well, technically three, but we only stayed in two) and then the events on the itinerary looked so wonderful it was an easy decision. The tour guide, Federico, was incredibly good at his job, and my tour group was nice. It was my first international "solo" trip, and I am SO GLAD that I did it! I feel like I had a very authentic experience.

"So many moments were "wow" moments, but I absolutely did not expect the inside of Sagrada Familia to take my breath away the way that it did. Instant tears of amazement and joy. Spain was our first Rick Steves' Tour (1). We took it immediately following a Road Scholar Tour (2). Rick Steves' asked for our name and how many tours we had taken. Road S. asked our name, background, where we were from and why we were on this tour. Road S. gave a 2 hour history lecture intro to Spain. Rick Steves' did not. Road S. filled most days. R. Steves' gave us 4 hour tour and left us on our own. We felt we got more for our money on Road Scholar Tour; we learned more history.

Our guides, Augustin and Luis were wonderful! The local guides were outstanding and very knowledgeable. I learned a lot - the local guides were very interesting. My friend and I flew to Barcelona 4 days early and scheduled some other activities that the RS tour was not covering. I really enjoyed my fellow travelers - what a great group of people. I signed up as a solo traveler willing to share a room. My roommate was very pleasant. I would not hesitate to travel that way again.

"It's hard to pick a favorite. I loved our guide Federico in Madrid. He made history come alive as Carlos III. I will definitely be returning to Toledo - a single morning and afternoon was not enough. The thing I probably enjoyed the most was meeting new people and getting to know the people in our RS group. I live alone and having the interaction with everyone was the best part of my adventure. And the hotels were outstanding. I would stay in either of them again."

The place that we did visit were all excellent and for the most part the group was fun to be with, I would definitely do a Rick Steve's tour again

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our tour to Barcelona, Madrid, and Toledo, Spain. Our guide, Federico was knowledgeable, thoughtful, prompt, and very passionate in his presentations and guidance. Having both a guide and local guides add so much to the depth of knowledge and appreciation for the many places and sites one experiences on the Rick Steves tour. Delightful tour group with many personal friendships developed in a short time together.

"Following a group dinner in Madrid our tour group was being led back to our hotel by our guide, Federico. We came upon some street musicians and Federico spontaneously joined the musicians and began singing an opera. Not only was it unexpected but, it was unscripted, wonderfully unique, and demonstrated the enormous love and passion Federico has for his job and the country he so loves…Spain. It was simply wonderful!"

2 disappointments. 1) Our guide Frederico is very animated and wants you to get the full history of a particular piece. At the Riena Sofia, we spent far too long on Picasso's Guernica, leaving the museum after seeing only that piece even though there are several other important works. 2) Spain is a difficult place for people with food preferences. We found if you ordered straight vegan (not GF) they could accommodate that but if you were a vegetarian (eats fish) but also GF, that didn't work

This was a very fast-paced tour -- our fourth with RS -- but with ample free time to explore or slow down on our own. Federico was Magnifico! He effectively herded 22 cats while maintaining his cool and his , colorful, passionate personality. His heartfelt Don Quixote soliloquy rivaled Francesca Caruso's captivating monologue in Rome. We love Rick Steves tours, the philosophy of learning about the culture, the small groups, and the split between free and programmed time. The structure of this tour was a bit different than our other ones in that we weren't on the bus with the other folks much so there was a little less connection between us all. "Sagrada Familia was breathtaking. Casa Batllo - took the inside tour that was amazing and should be included as part of the Rick Steves tour. Picasso Museum Barcelona. Our guide in the Prado and Sofia - Frederico was a highlight. Wish I had him as an instructor in college."

"Seeing Guernica for the first time. I had seen it many times in reproduction, but it was fantastic to stand in front of the real thing. The picture made me reflect on the devastation happening in Ukraine, so I was a bit sad. Sometimes being sad can be a "wow" moment."

We are thrilled to travel again...our trip was planned in 2020 and the delays were difficult. The tour to Barcelona and Madrid met and exceeded every expectation. Thank you. Connections and local tour guides were perfect. Augustin is an excellent tour leader. We enjoyed his expertise and assistance with our plans after Barcelona and Madrid.

Our tour of Barcelona, Madrid, and Toledo exceeded my expectations, which were already extremely high. Our cheery, unflappable guide, Helen, greeted us every day with her huge smile and we knew it was going to be another fun filled day. Her energy was contagious, and every person on our tour of 24 curious, open, and excited adults followed Helen’s lead and we laughed and oohed and awed our way through every guided walking tour, and delicious dinner, and museums, and cathedrals. Thank you!

"Visually, my favorite wow moment was being inside Antonio Gaudi’s La Segrada Familia Cathedral. Overall, my favorite wow experience was meeting remarkable people , both those who were on our tour, and the wonderful, kind, caring and friendly citizens of Spain. We were members of the inaugural tour, following two years of pandemic, and we were greeted by our local guides, wait staff, housekeepers, musicians on the streets of Madrid, and fellow humans beings as if we were royalty. Muy bueno!"

Wonderful trip with a great guide and terrific tour-mates! Barcelona was a truly unique Mediterranean destination--you can feel why they consider themselves independent from the rest of Spain. And Madrid was a mixture of big-city energy, architectural elegance, and Castilian pride. Toledo was a delightful slice of southern medieval Europe--a little stony town suspended in time.

"Oh, definitely La Sagrada Familia was my favorite Wow moment. The exterior looks like the world's biggest sand castle. When we walked into the church, we were greeted by towering white columns that seemed to reach to the sky and the most gorgeous colored light POURING into the church from the gigantic stained glass windows. We were stunned by the light, color, and beauty. Gaudi's aesthetic was eccentric as all get-out, but he was truly a genius."

Amanda and the tour itinerary were great. We arrived early to Barcelona and did a tour to mount seratt. I would strongly suggest adding a day to the tour so this could be seen. Hotel jazz gets great marks in our book for both accommodations and breakfasts Hotel Europa could use a little refining and better air circulation especially in light of Covid. Their morning restaurant was not as good as the hotel jazz and service left something to be desired unfortunately.

It was a wonderful tour. Our guide, Amanda, was great... and I enjoyed that there were only a dozen of us (not a typical size tour group.) Outstanding and amazing. I've never done a group tour before and wasn't sure I'd like it, but it's well worth it. All of the guides were personable and well informed. The tours and logistics were well planned and seamlessly organized. It was the right mix of guided bits and time on my own. I liked meeting the other people on the tour - they were experienced travelers and I learned a lot from them also, and they were people I might not have chance to meet at home.

Tour was well-organized and structured. Hotels were good, comfortable and in very good central locations. Tour guide Frederico was outstanding. Personable, knowledgeable, teaching with great dramatic flair that he pulled off skillfully. The museums could have been overwhelming - the Picasso in Barcelona, the Prado in Madrid, but the tour focused on limited elements to present in detail. With free time in every city, if one wanted to return and visit areas not covered.

From the beginning of the tour, I felt that we would have a great experience. Our guide, Federico Garcia Barroso, took us on walking tours of Barcelona, Madrid, and Toledo, through public squares, broad avenues, and narrow streets. After a short time in each city, I felt comfortable. His knowledge of art, architecture, and food, was invaluable.

"I have two "wow" moments. The first was seeing La Sagrada Familia. I'd seen many photos and videos, but I wasn't prepared for the immensity of the building when we emerged from the Metro. The second was going to see a flamenco performance. Once again, I'd seen flamenco on TV, but seeing it in person was amazing. Federico made sure that we had reservations, and our group sat right next to the stage."
When To Go & Weather
Barcelona and Madrid are lively cities to visit nearly year-round. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for combining the convenience of peak season with good weather, lighter crowds, and long days. Visiting between November and March offers the benefit of missing out on the sweat, stress, and crowds of the tourist season, along with cooler weather.

Hotels & Flights
Tour Hotels
In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your confirmation email as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour in the Documents section of your tour account.
Flights
Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.
Most tour members arrange to fly into Barcelona (BCN) and out of Madrid (MAD) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Spain.
We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options to get to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Spain guidebook.
