Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Barcelona

Barcelona, the proud capital of Catalunya, may be the most festive city on the Mediterranean. We'll meet at 5 p.m. at our centrally located hotel for an orientation meeting — then we'll join the party with a stroll through our surprise-filled, people-packed neighborhood before having dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Barcelona.

Day 2: Gaudí and Modernista Eixample

This morning is devoted to the swirling architecture of Antoni Gaudí and Barcelona's Modernisme movement. We'll stroll through the Eixample neighborhood, visiting the Casa Milà and Block of Discord, on our way to tour the greatest work of Barcelona's master builder — the towering, dizzying Sagrada Família. The remainder of your afternoon and your evening are free to explore more Art Nouveau delights throughout the city.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Barcelona.

Day 3: Barri Gòtic and Picasso

Today we'll visit the Picasso Museum, Europe's best collection of Picasso paintings, where we'll trace the story of this hometown boy-genius' art as he evolved from a kid who painted like an adult…to an adult who painted like a kid. We'll end our tour in Barcelona's maze-like Gothic Quarter, exploring from its Roman foundations to the spires of its candle-, relic- (and geese-!) strewn cathedral. This evening we'll toast to our last night in Barcelona with dinner together.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Barcelona.

Day 4: Park Güell and a Speedy Train to Madrid

We'll start today with a panoramic bus tour of Barcelona, leading to Gaudí's famed Park Güell. Then it's "all aboard" for one of Europe's speediest trains (the AVE) to Madrid. Upon arrival, we'll meet our bus for a tour of Madrid's major monuments and classy boulevards. Once we've settled into our hotel in the heart of Madrid, we'll take a neighborhood orientation walk, ending with a tapas-style dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Train: 3 hours. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Madrid.

Day 5: Madrid's Royal Palace

Today, we'll take a historical walking tour starting at the very center of Madrid: the bustling Puerta del Sol. From there we'll walk to — and through — the sumptuously decorated Royal Palace. With 2,000 rooms, tons of luxurious tapestries, and a king's ransom of chandeliers, this is truly one of the great palaces of Europe. This evening we'll enjoy a swirling performance of Flamenco, before setting you free for dinner on your own.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Madrid.

Day 6: Masterpieces of Madrid

This morning we'll tour — the Reina Sofía, Spain's greatest modern art museum and home of Picasso's Guernica. Then we'll make our way to the masterpiece-packed Prado — where you'll see paintings by Velázquez, Goya, El Greco, and others. The rest of the afternoon is yours to stroll through the majestic Retiro Gardens (Madrid's most popular park) or do a little shopping.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Madrid.

Day 7: Toledo

A short bus ride after breakfast will take us to Spain's old capital city of Toledo (and back in time about 500 years). We'll take a traffic-free walking tour that includes Toledo's magnificent cathedral, the historic Tránsito Synagogue, and El Greco's The Burial of the Count of Orgaz in Santo Tomé Chapel. This afternoon you'll have time to enjoy the winding medieval streets of Toledo. We'll catch the bus back to Madrid for our final dinner together to share travel memories and toast new friends. Salud!

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Madrid.

Day 8: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Madrid's airport is an easy bus or taxi ride away — or you may want to continue your Iberian adventures on your own. Hasta luego!

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our tour to Barcelona, Madrid, and Toledo, Spain. Our guide, Federico was knowledgeable, thoughtful, prompt, and very passionate in his presentations and guidance. Having both a guide and local guides add so much to the depth of knowledge and appreciation for the many places and sites one experiences on the Rick Steves tour. Delightful tour group with many personal friendships developed in a short time together.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Following a group dinner in Madrid our tour group was being led back to our hotel by our guide, Federico. We came upon some street musicians and Federico spontaneously joined the musicians and began singing an opera. Not only was it unexpected but, it was unscripted, wonderfully unique, and demonstrated the enormous love and passion Federico has for his job and the country he so loves…Spain. It was simply wonderful!"

Really good itinerary and perfect pace for the week. Federico was passionate about his country (particularly Madrid) and his dramatic flair made the history interesting. It’s important that we focus on history, culture, context and most RS tour guides are true to that goal.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"La Sagrada Familia. To that point, I would strongly encourage arranging the day to start with other Gaudi experiences and end at La Sagrada Familia so we could stay after the tour guide left. It was too short a visit to absorb so much beauty and genius."

2 disappointments. 1) Our guide Frederico is very animated and wants you to get the full history of a particular piece. At the Riena Sofia, we spent far too long on Picasso's Guernica, leaving the museum after seeing only that piece even though there are several other important works. 2) Spain is a difficult place for people with food preferences. We found if you ordered straight vegan (not GF) they could accommodate that but if you were a vegetarian (eats fish) but also GF, that didn't work

Our group led by the amazing Federico felt like a "merry band of travelers" as described in Rick Steves' write up of his tours. Federico and our local guides expertly showed off their beautiful cities and gave us an appreciation of their art, culture and history in such memorable ways. Our group dinners and wine/tapas events were fantastic and our hotels were centrally located, clean and very comfortable. Cannot wait to plan our next tour!

We loved the structure of the tour. It was a perfect balance between group and individual time. We LOVED all of the guides, but especially our tour guide Federico.

"The favorite structure that we saw with the tour was La Familia. My favorite part of the tour was touring the museums with Federico. His ability to take on different personas to teach us the history/intention of the artist was fabulous. He made what could be a "dry" topic fun and interesting. We also enjoyed the day trip to Toledo."

The Spain, Madrid and Barcelona Tour was my first Rick Steve's Tour experience. The trip was for my 50th birthday, and my husband and I had a wonderful time exploring a new country on our first group tour. I have used Rick Steve's guides traveling on my own with my family and watched his programs and attended many Monday Night Travel zooms. I liked the format of the tour which gave us time on our own each day after being taken to major sites and local treasures with an experienced local guides.

This was a very fast-paced tour -- our fourth with RS -- but with ample free time to explore or slow down on our own. Federico was Magnifico! He effectively herded 22 cats while maintaining his cool and his , colorful, passionate personality. His heartfelt Don Quixote soliloquy rivaled Francesca Caruso's captivating monologue in Rome. We saw many fascinating sites, but, as always, my favorite part of the tour was the group of people we traveled with. Not a grump in the bunch!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Seems as if everyone cites Sagrada Familia and I will, too. I was more moved than I expected in the warm glow of the stained glass and I found the Passion facade fascinating. But my real "wow" moment might have been Federico singing "O Sole Mio" at the group's farewell dinner!"

The mix of trips to monuments, churches, and museums was well balanced with trips to beautiful parks. Our walking tours were brisk but refreshing. Most mornings were devoted to guided tours, with plenty of time for rest or sightseeing on one's own. We gathered for convivial group dinners most evenings. Accommodations were centrally located and very comfortable, even luxurious. Good planning on part of organizers meant our trip rolled out flawlessly. We had no worries.

Excellent tour - This is the ideal way to be introduced to Barcelona, Madrid, and Toledo. Federico Barroso is an exceptional teacher and dynamic orator who brings art and history to life with an entertaining and engaging flourish of style. Wonderful mix of guided tours and free time. Excellent value, especially regarding food/drink, hotels, and quality of tour guides. We love Rick Steves tours, the philosophy of learning about the culture, the small groups, and the split between free and programmed time. The structure of this tour was a bit different than our other ones in that we weren't on the bus with the other folks much so there was a little less connection between us all. It felt like a major focus of the week was food, and all of the "covered" meals were dinners. The time in the museums and the time for programmed time seemed very constrained.

Favorite "WOW" moment

This is our second RS Tour. We were totally pleased by the professionalism, attention to detail, comfort, pace of the tour. It included a lot of history, art, culture and of course delicious food. The accommodations and amenities of the hotels we stayed in were very nice, we had no complaints. We had a wonderful group of people, who all got along well and were interesting to get to know. The tables for 4-6 for dinner gave us opportunities to do that.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"In Madrid, our guide, Frederico, spontaneously broke out in song, singing O Sole Mio along with a street string quartet on our way home from dinner one night! It was the most amazing surprise! He's good! Frederico was a wonderful combination of a history teacher, dramatic theater performer and music theater actor. He taught us how to appreciate the art, history and culture of the times, be they ancient, medieval to "modern". It was all fascinating and fun!"

This was my rookie tour experience, with any provider. As a predominantly solo traveler I never hesitate to Rick Steves tour. Limiting the number to approximately 25 travelers ensures we get to truly know each other and bonding takes place almost immediately. I never feel alone nor left out. We become a family. I like the buddying up accountability system. It feels good to know someone is always looking out for me. I am an instructor and by nature I seek to be educated. These tours are a One-Stop shop- Fun-N’-Facts. Wear very comfortable shoes.

We enjoyed our Barcelona and Madrid tour with Federico as our guide. The tour's focus is on "buildings," meaning cathedrals, museums and architecture. We learned a lot about Gaudi, Picasso, El Greco and Velazquez. There was way more food provided than the itinerary suggested and we enjoyed all of it. My one criticism is that we would have liked more guided time in the Prado museum than we got. It felt like we barely scratched the surface of what was available to be seen.

Since we had the very best tour guide possible in Fredricko our tour was fantastic with not one negative for this tour of Barcelona and Madrid. Fredricko made the history come alive with his dramatic interpretations!

This was our first venture out since the CoVid lockdown. We were anxious but felt as comfortable as is possible that we would avoid exposure to CoVid on our excursion. There and back again safely negative! While that issue overshadowed everything, we can't speak highly enough of Federico and all of our local guides as well as the excellent accommodations.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Two actually. First was in Barcelona and walking into the morning sun shining through the stained glass windows to light up the interior of La Sagrada Familia. The second was in Madrid where Picasso's Guernica painting is featured in the Sofia Museum. For me, as with many, the painting grips you with sadness and anger. Walking through those feeling as Federico pointed out specifics helped me to understand why it made me feel that way."

It far exceeded my expectations! We had great tour guides and a wonderful group of 23 people. Federico was so full of information and very entertaining! All the tour guides were not only well informed but they were so enthusiastic! We have been to several places in Europe but never with a guide. There are many things we would have looked at and gone on to the next thing without getting all the wonderful history and explanation. We will definitely do another Rick Steves tour!

From the first moment we met our vivacious, energetic and most gracious tour guide, Helen, it was obvious why she has been employed by Rick Steves for 12 years. The group bonded well despite limited bus times together. Outstanding local guides as usual, although some issues with understanding some of the female guides who spoke rapidly in order to provide extensive amounts of material in short times. Breaks between tours were sometimes too brief for snacks or meals.

Favorite "WOW" moment

This was our first guided tour, but I hope it will not be our last. We were very impressed with our tour guide, Helen (who was endlessly informative and entertaining), the level of organization (especially given the two-year hiatus between tours, with many former businesses no longer in existence), and the flexible attitude of our fellow travelers. The group dinners were fun, we learned a lot, and remarked on how quiet our hotel rooms were (old buildings are the best).

Wonderful trip with a great guide and terrific tour-mates! Barcelona was a truly unique Mediterranean destination--you can feel why they consider themselves independent from the rest of Spain. And Madrid was a mixture of big-city energy, architectural elegance, and Castilian pride. Toledo was a delightful slice of southern medieval Europe--a little stony town suspended in time.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Oh, definitely La Sagrada Familia was my favorite Wow moment. The exterior looks like the world's biggest sand castle. When we walked into the church, we were greeted by towering white columns that seemed to reach to the sky and the most gorgeous colored light POURING into the church from the gigantic stained glass windows. We were stunned by the light, color, and beauty. Gaudi's aesthetic was eccentric as all get-out, but he was truly a genius."

Our tour of Barcelona, Madrid, and Toledo exceeded my expectations, which were already extremely high. Our cheery, unflappable guide, Helen, greeted us every day with her huge smile and we knew it was going to be another fun filled day. Outstanding and amazing. I've never done a group tour before and wasn't sure I'd like it, but it's well worth it. All of the guides were personable and well informed. Tour was well-organized and structured. Hotels were good, comfortable and in very good central locations. Tour guide Frederico was outstanding. Personable, knowledgeable, teaching with great dramatic flair that he pulled off skillfully. The museums could have been overwhelming - the Picasso in Barcelona, the Prado in Madrid, but the tour focused on limited elements to present in detail. With free time in every city, if one wanted to return and visit areas not covered.

When To Go & Weather

Barcelona and Madrid are lively cities to visit nearly year-round. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for combining the convenience of peak season with good weather, lighter crowds, and long days. Visiting between November and March offers the benefit of missing out on the sweat, stress, and crowds of the tourist season, along with cooler weather.

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your confirmation email as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Barcelona (BCN) and out of Madrid (MAD) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Spain.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options to get to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Spain guidebook.
