Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Spain

We'll gather at our Barcelona hotel at 5 p.m. for a "Welcome to Spain" get-together. Then we'll join the locals in their nightly ritual and head out for an orientation paseo (stroll) through our neighborhood. We'll finish by getting acquainted over a tapas-style dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Barcelona.

Day 2: Lively, Artistic Barcelona

This morning we'll explore Barcelona's maze-like Barri Gòtic, from its Roman foundations to the spires of its elaborate, Gothic cathedral. Then we'll hop the subway to Gaudí's towering, dizzying Sagrada Família. Afterward you'll be free to experience more of this magnificent city on your own, from the Picasso Museum to Gaudí's playful Park Güell.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Barcelona.

Day 3: Masterpieces of Madrid

All aboard! After breakfast we'll take one of Europe's speediest trains (the AVE) to Madrid. We'll tour one of Europe's premier art museums — the masterpiece-packed Prado — where you'll see paintings by Velázquez, Goya, El Greco, and others. Later we'll stroll the lively streets of our neighborhood and enjoy dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Train: 3 hours. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Madrid.

Day 4: Madrid and the Royal Palace

This morning we'll meet our local guide for a tour through the sumptuously decorated Royal Palace. With 2,000 rooms, acres of luxurious tapestries, and a king's ransom of chandeliers, this is truly one of the great palaces of Europe. Our walking tour will continue through Madrid's bustling Puerta del Sol to its elegant Plaza Mayor. Your afternoon and evening are free to visit the Reina Sofía modern art museum, stroll through the majestic Retiro Gardens (Madrid's most popular park), and maybe even catch a performance of zarzuela, Spain's delightfully light opera.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Madrid.

Day 5: Day Trip to Segovia

We'll venture out of the city by bus to the history-rich town of Segovia and its beautifully preserved Roman aqueduct. After a walking tour of the aqueduct and town, you'll have free time to wander and visit Segovia's medieval Alcázar fortress. We'll regroup this afternoon for lunch to savor a Segovian specialty together — roast suckling pig. Then we'll return to Madrid in time for you to enjoy dinner on your own.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Madrid.

Day 6: Historic Toledo

It's a short bus ride to Spain's old capital city of Toledo (and back in time about 500 years). We'll take a morning walking tour that includes Toledo's magnificent cathedral, the medieval Tránsito Synagogue, and El Greco's The Burial of the Count of Orgaz at the Santo Tomé Chapel. This afternoon and evening, you'll have plenty of free time to enjoy the winding streets and varied sights.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 1 hour. Sleep in Toledo.

Day 7: La Mancha and Granada

This morning we'll drive through windswept "Don Quixote country," stopping to sniff the saffron and admire a whitewashed windmill or two. Our destination is Granada, where we'll begin with a visit to the ornate tombs of world-changing Ferdinand and Isabel, who reigned over a new age of religious zeal at home and exploration of the "new" Americas. Then we'll head up the Albayzín hill for dinner together and enjoy a sunset view of the Alhambra.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Granada.

Day 8: Moorish Treasures of Granada

Today you'll learn about Spain's Islamic legacy with a visit to the sprawling palace and garden complex of the Alhambra (when available). This last and greatest of Europe's Moorish palaces will awe you with its grace and artistry. You'll also have free time to make your own discoveries along the colorful streets and alleyways of Granada's Old Town.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Granada.

Day 9: Ronda

Today's destination is the hill town of Ronda, home to Spain's oldest bullring and its most breathtaking gorge. This afternoon, we'll visit the 5,000-seat bullring and have free time to explore Ronda's Moorish and Mercadillo Quarters, linked together by the famous gravity-defying stone bridge (towering over the rubble of an earlier one that wasn't). Then we'll enjoy dinner together at our hotel.

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). Bus: 3 hours. Sleep near Ronda.

Day 10: Spain's Pueblos Blancos

Today we'll wind our way between the olive groves and whitewashed villages of Spain's pueblos blancos. We'll head into the countryside to visit a bull farm and learn about Spain's most controversial pastime. Then we'll tour an olive oil mill, where we'll discover the traditional methods of producing this extra-virgin export. After a rustic lunch together, we'll press on to the quintessential Spanish hill town — Arcos de la Frontera — where we'll share dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Arcos (group may be split between two hotels).

Day 11: Sherry and Horses

We'll start our day with a visit to a local Andalusian horse farm. After learning all about these magnificent creatures and their connection to the local culture, we'll take a short drive to your guide's favorite Andalusian town. You'll be set free to explore and find a tasty tapas lunch before we regroup to sample the region's other famous specialty, sherry. This evening, we'll return to lovely Arcos with time to relax and enjoy dinner on your own.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Arcos.

Day 12: Sevilla's Barrio Santa Cruz

This morning we'll drive directly to Sevilla, Spain's most flamboyant and atmospheric city. We'll begin our visit with a guided tour that takes us from the famous La Macarena (Weeping Virgin) statue to the world's largest Gothic cathedral. You'll have time to do more exploring on your own before we regroup tonight for a performance of sultry, swirling flamenco.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Sevilla.

Day 13: Sevilla's Royal Alcázar

Today we'll start with a tour of the beautifully Moorish-style Alcázar palace (when available), the Sevilla home of the Spanish royal family for the past 500 years. Afterward, you're free to walk in the footsteps of Carmen and Don Juan, linger in Sevilla's charming squares, or stroll along the romantic Guadalquivir River. This evening we'll share travel memories and toast new friends at our final dinner together, capped off with a carriage ride through the streets of Sevilla. Salud!

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Sevilla.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Sevilla's airport is a bus or taxi ride away, with easy connections throughout Europe. Alternatively, you can hop on an AVE train to Madrid to continue your Iberian adventures. Hasta luego!

Itinerary specifics subject to change.

Please note: We may not be able to visit the Alhambra as a group or guarantee admission due to their new restrictive ticketing policy.

My second tour and just as fantastic as my first. Perfect mix of guided time and unplanned free time. So well organized and our guide Agustin was outstanding! Hotels were in great locations and a bunch of us in our group wished we could add on a second night stay in Ronda, one of our favorite hotels. Sights and excursions were wonderful and unique. Spain is fantastic!

The overall tour was a beautiful mix of cities in most every region of Spain. Fourteen days provided the opportunity to experience and learn so much about the rich history of this beautiful country. Our guide, Augustine, was incredible (the right mix of kind, patient, and knowledgeable while upholding tour standards and practices). The guides for each city specific tour added local information about the city and the specific sites they led us through. Invaluable. Hotels phenomenal!

"There were so many "wow" moments. The Sagrada Familia Basilica in Barcelona was breathtaking and we had a sunny day that lit up the columns in various colors from the stained glass windows. Each cathedral, palace and chapel was amazing and different. The luncheon at the olive mill was beautiful and the stay outside Ronda as well as the gorge itself was memorable as well."

I learned a great deal about the history of the people of Spain, their position in Europe and its impact on their history and the religious influences. The food was a great experience along with the change in schedule meaning the late night dinners. I adjusted!!! The art was magnificent and I really enjoyed getting senior discounts! The folks on the tour did not disappoint which is always amazing to me because this is complete luck of the draw. I'm eager to share my learnings with friends

Our tour was definitely impacted by Covid as it swept through our entire group and cut us down by half. Once someone revealed a positive test, they were cut loose from the tour unless they subsequently tested "negative" even if they had symptoms. Once people saw their fellow tour members abandoned, they either stopped testing, or would not reveal results

This group of travelers were so ready to start touring again, unfortunately Covid took out half of our group. That was the not so good part…we did have so many wonderful local guides ready to share the history of the locations. The hotel outside of Ronda was beautiful and tranquil. Such a nice break. Too often we were give free time during Siesta time and stuck in areas with not much to do but wait for our bus. Loved Sagrada Familia and the Alhambra as I knew I would

I agree that seeing the sites early in the day means less crowds, but it also meant huge amounts of time in the afternoons and early evenings to not have much to do. There were suggestions, but no clear instructions on how to either get there or why we might want to see them. Besides, a tour is meant to be a guided tour, with some periodic spots for on-your-own sightseeing. My Rick Steves guide in Greece led walks on the days we were left on our own. They were mostly fully attended each time.

This was our first RS tour and it exceeded our expectations in every way! We have traveled a fair amount but we truly experienced Spain in a much deeper way than we have in our previous travels. Having all of the logistics taken care of for us enabled us to enjoy the trip with little hassle. Javier, our tour guide, is passionate about Spain and incredibly knowledgeable, but it was his extra anecdotes that truly set him apart. And our fellow travelers were so fun-loving!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I would have expected to name one of the many cathedrals or palaces because I am always in awe of those treasures. What really struck me, though, was the day we went to the horse farm and the olive oil mill...not because they were so spectacular in and of themselves, but because I realized that day that if I had been traveling on my own, never in a million years would I have discovered these venues. And it was those typie of experiences that made the tour so worth it for me."

It was a great group of people and the tour guide was excellent! Maybe 14 days was just a bit too much. I like the off the beaten track stops much more than the cathedrals and castles.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite wow moment was going into a barn full of newborn foals at a horse breeding ranch. It was totally unexpected. It was one of those things you would never get to do on your own touring around Spain. While seeing all the cathedrals, castles and other ancient architecture is important and I would be disappointed if I didn't see those things, it is the unusual stops that a tour company puts together that sets their tours apart."

This was my first Rick Steves tour. I've used his itineraries and recommendations in the past, but this was my first organized experience. I think the flow and pace of the tour were outstanding. It had just the right balance of group guidance and free time to do our own thing. Our guide Amanda was outstanding. Her knowledge and experience gave us a lot of confidence. She is a wonderful person. As a group, we all really bonded by the time we hit Arcos. It was a special experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We went on several side trips including a bull ranch, horse farm, and a boutique olive oil mill. I might have skipped those on my own. They really added to the experience. The group meals were outstanding both in terms of the quality of the restaurants and the fun of the overall experience with our tour mates. The one experience that really blew me away, however, was the flamenco concert in Sevilla. It was intimate, emotional, and dramatic. It was the fireworks show at the end of the trip."

The tour was fabulous; only shadowed by the disappointment of our travel mates contracting COVID along the way (timing would suggest the flight over or perhaps an airport, despite their fastidious N95 use), and needing to drop out of the tour. Guide Amanda was fantastic - especially at 'managing our expectations', and Rick Steves' personnel connected our friends with Travel guard, who were very helpful in navigating their eventual flight home requirements following COVID.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Happening upon the Ronda Romantica festival in Ronda - featuring a horse show including a flamenco dancer and horse's interactive choreagraphy; the village 'Rocio' festivities in Granada - with elaborate Andalusian dress and fanfare, and the out-of-this world Flamenco show in Sevilla!"

We really enjoyed out Best of Spain tour with William as our guide. He was thorough in explaining what to expect with our hotels and offered advice on where the better places to eat were located. We covered a lot of ground in 14 days! My only desire would have been able to spend more time in Andalusia's White hill towns and make it to some of the coastal towns. I felt like this trip could easily be extended another week.

My overall experience was outstanding. I base this on our fantastic tour guide, William, our fun and friendly group of travelers, our wonderful guides in every city and towns and the quality and balance of rich cultural experiences. The group dinners and hotel locations were also amazing. I had not been out of the U.S for three years, so I was eager for this tour. Be warned that there is much walking and stair climbing, so be in good physical shape so you can stay happy and healthy.

The tour was good. Helen was a perfect guide. The pace was good & the sites we saw were great. The most frustrating part was it took over a week before I got an audio system that actually worked. We have been waiting since 2020 to go on this tour. We were excited and anxious about jumping back into European travel. This was my 11th Rick Steves' tour and I have to say it was my best tour hands down. Spain was breathtaking and exciting, but it was our guide Helen that made this trip so fabulous. Our tour group was friendly, welcoming, and helpful - I always felt part of the group. Whenever I needed a bit of help navigating slick stone stairways with no handrails (most of them!), there was always an arm cheerfully offered to help. I especially enjoyed the surprise experiences on the tour (bullring, county inn) I'd never have found on my own

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Seeing the Alhambra lit up at night, from a beautiful restaurant on the Albaizin. I note it's on the cover of the 2020 tour book! And a second "wow": Hotel Molino del Arco, the country inn outside Ronda, which felt like an offshoot of the Alhambra."

Our tour experience was extraordinary in many ways. Our tour leader James was experienced, articulate, caring, creative. His organization was superb; perfect timing getting to see places like the Prado, Alhambra, and Alcazar; each time we hit a site, we were able to go in almost immediately. City guides were excellent, all of them warm, knowledgeable, and passionate about their cities/ towns and pertinent cultures. Accommodations were also excellent; creature comforts galore!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Seville was our favorite city because it seemed to combine all the facets of Spain that we grew to love: music, art, food, spectacular sites like the Alcazar, ease of getting around the old city from our hotel. The Macarena and Alcazar tours plus the flamenco performance were especially fascinating! Our last evening was topped by a carriage tour and dinner at Carmen restaurant; we couldn't imagine a better, more memorable ending to our Spain tour."

A beautiful tour through Spain, learning (and eating!) a great deal about culture, history, animal husbandry (bulls for the ring and Andalusian horses), olive oil making, and Spanish everyday life. A very helpful guide, James, and a very convivial group made the trip a pleasure.

My first Rick Steves tour was all I expected and more. The activities were a good blend of planned events and free time. Hotels were mostly local establishments and always located right in town and perfect for exploring on foot. Of course its always nice to get a cab back to the hotel, when you have taken the local guide's advice to "get lost and enjoy the city".

"Sagrada Famillia - it is a fantastical building inside and out. Gaudi must have been an genius time traveler. His designs were so advanced that construction techniques to complete his masterpiece were not even available in his lifetime. But now, with adequate funding, building is progressing rapidlly. I would love to see Sagrada Familia again when it is completed in 2026."

This was my first Rick Steves tour. I really enjoyed the combination of flexibility that the tour gave along with the scheduled tours in each city. Our guide James was amazing, making it very interesting. The individual guides in each city were very knowledgeable about the sites and the history and made each place special, along with giving the color of the city.

The reason I chose this tour was the fast paced trek through Spain. I very much enjoyed the taste of all the cities. I was not impressed with the hotels after we left Barcelona. I know that one of Rick's philosophies is to stay in small boutique hotels at city center...however, there are plenty of 3-4 star hotels in equal numbers in those very same locations. I thought the local guides were very good. Inez was particularly engaging.

Best of Spain in 14 days was my 9th tour with Rick Steves. And it did not fail the expectations. Spain is a beautiful country, full of rich culture, history and traditions. The tour design helps with exposure to all with abundance. Although the tour includes mostly southern part of the country, there is no doubt it's one of the most gorgeous part of the country and Europe. The hotels, transportation, meals and activities were well organized, well chosen.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Gorgeous night in Granada, delicious dinner and absolutely outstanding view of Alhambra was a great prelude to the visit of Alhambra itself next morning. View of Andalusia hills and planes from the balcony of the hotel in Arcos De la Frontera, climbing up and down the narrow streets of this picturesque pueblo de blanco, and eating tapas with locals at tiny bar. Visiting Sevilla Basilica la Macarena and watching locals decorating the floats for the next celebration of the beloved Lady of Hope."

The Best of Spain in 14 days tour has to be my favorite of my 8 tours. It was a good mix of museums and historical sites along with large and small cities. The speciality guides as always provide extra content whether in a museum or exploring a neighborhood. This gives context to what one has seen. While the normal experiences of a tour, the food, camaraderie, site visits with art and architecture, etc. were absolutely excellent, on this tour I also experienced something profoundly new. I found myself falling in love with the spirit of the people of Spain! After many tours with various companies on 7 continents, my 1st Rick Steves tour stood out as unique due to 1 factor-- a positive attitude. Even prolonged illness during the tour did not dampen my spirits or those of my fellow travelers. I think your pre-tour publication of tour "expectations" has tangible effects. Our guide Robert Wright was excellent. He handled our group well exposing us to the community spirit of Spain as well as the expected tourist destinations. He also handled unexpected difficulties like a pro, helping group members negotiate personal difficulties. The group was cohesive and cooperative and got along great together. Robert took every opportunity to praise us and encouraged togetherness as well as accommodating group members who wanted more alone time.

Thoroughly enjoyed the tour. I didn't have any expectations of Spain so all was new and interesting. The crowds in the cities were almost overwhelming. (We hit Barcelona during Merce Festival.) The smaller towns and countryside are a "must include" part of the tour. The number of pickpockets was a surprise and a bit of a turn off. That just seems to go with touring in large cities, but seemed more prevalent in Spain than other locations we have visited in Europe.

We really enjoyed the tour overall. As always, with RS well organized, and a diverse mix of cultural and educational experiences, great dining, little surprises along the way, and free time. I found Barcelona and Madrid to be overly crowded, and think we have seen the bigger/most important sites (Sagrada Familia, Palace, Prado and Reina Sofia) in less time, so as to have more time to enjoy Toledo and Sevilla. Robert did a superb job as our guide.

This tour was truly all-encompassing. Food, flamenco, Andalusian horses, bull farm, cathedrals, museums, olive oil mill, windmills, crowded cities and beautiful, vast rolling hillsides filled with olive trees. The tour was well planned to give one a good sense of Spain and what she is about. I appreciated the small hotels, the family owned restaurants and the chance to talk to the locals and explore on our own.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Hard to pick one, so I'll mention several. Walking into Gaudi's Sagrada Familia. I was awestruck. I didn't think I'd like it because the outside was so strange to me. But after the whole concept was explained, I was incredibly impressed. The other definite "wow" moment was when I opened the double glass doors of my room at El Convento Hotel in Arcos de la Frontera. The hotel is built on a cliffside, so the view beyond the balcony was vast and beautiful. Sunset and sunrise was spectacular."

Wonderful experience! It was all we'd hoped for and more! We didn't see how it could be good as our previous Rick Steves' tour to France, but it was! Javier is a brilliant and fascinating guidel. Early in the trip, my partner got very sick with high fever. Within an hour, Javier had arranged for a doctor to diagnose him in our hotel room and prescribe medication. This kind of medical care never happens anymore in American. Despite this problem, we loved this fabulous Spanish adventure!

I enjoyed the tour as this was a country we had not explored much previously. The Moorish influence recognizable in the architecture, food and vocabulary was very interesting to me. The illness of our scheduled guide right before the start of the tour resulted in some discontinuity the first few days, but with what must have been some heroic efforts by the Edmunds staff along with similar efforts by Nigel and Amanda things went much smoother than it could have been. RS tour members are flexible.

This was our first Rick Steves tour, and what a way to start. I taught high school for thirty plus years in the Fine Arts, and I had to be organized, have all the supplies necessary for my project, be enthusiastic, care about all my students, and create a positive learning environment. Overall good experience. The pace kept us going everyday. I would have liked more options to be presented for the free time. What we came up with was limited. Partly, this seems to just be the way Spain is, compared to Italy, Germany, or UK. Ronda, in particular, was lacking things to do with free time. The use of trains vs. a bus was a plus. In spite of the already lengthy trip, we added the Mezquita on our own.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The realization that Spain is such a young democratic country. The styles of painting that originated in Spain - Hieronymous Bosch, and Goya. The grand scale of both Moorish and Christian buildings: Sagrada Familia church, King's palace (over 2000 rooms). The view of the Alhambra from the restaurant: billowy clouds, rugged mountains, views of the bay/sea. The scale of the Cathedral in Sevilla, and the Mezquita."

Spain was everything I hoped for and more. We took your Best of Italy tour last year, and although Italy may have been more spectacular--Spain was more endearing. The people of Spain seem less resentful of tourists and more willing to engage with them. The tour itself was neither too fast nor too slow; the cultural experiences were interesting and the accommodations were lovely. Highly recommend it to anyone.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Jogging through Retiro Park in Madrid one afternoon. I imagined myself a local as I ran past picnickers with bottles of wine (for who goes to a public park without wine?), considerate teens on scooters, well-dressed seniors with little dogs, and seemingly endless paths that wound through well manicured gardens."

Although I was fighting allergies, a possible viral cold and extreme swelling of my feet, ankles and calves due to the salt level of the great food, overall the tour was great. I'd been to some of the locations in the past, but seeing them with our guide and the local guides was far superior to seeing them on my own.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite WOW moment was visiting the Andalusian horse farm. I'd never been around that many horses at one time before. The young ones were so sweet and the moms were friendly, too. Only slightly below that WOW was visiting the matador's farm where we saw horses, bulls, cows and calves all in the same place. I've never been opposed to bull fighting and learning more about how all the animals are raised, trained and treated plus the sport/art itself was fascinating."

Spain is a fantastic country! we had high expectations and expectations were wildly exceeded. The tour was so well done---easy travel, hotels perfectly located, restaurants were awesome---delicious with perfect wines. The 'side trips' and special RS 'events'(Bull farm--with Matador, Horse farm, wine tastings, horse carriage ride, breakfast in a Spanish home) made the trip that much more special and we connected with local people in ways we would have never done on our own.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Wow moments were visiting with local people and businesses the are so essential to the Spanish culture such as the bull farm (meeting the owner and matador), the Andalusian horse farm and the olive farm. I had done this tour in 2013, and chose it again to bring my nieces. It was great. The hotels in Barcelona and Madrid and Sevilla were better than in 2013. Also, the addition of the bull farm was great. Agustin was a great guide. He was friendly and professional. There were a couple of very difficult people in our group, and he handled the situations very quietly and calmly.

Our tour guide, Javier Menor was the ultimate tour guide. Professional, humorous, charming, caring, and knowledgeable can only begin to describe Javier. The itinerary was well paced and gave time to see the sights and to explore on or own. I really have no other words to say, except I was really blown away by this trip. I wish I hadn't waited so long to take a Rick Steves tour. If the other tours are as good as this, then sign me up for all of them! The local guides were also top notch.

First our guide Javier Menor was fantastic! He was on time, courteous, friendly, and worked hard to ensure a good time for everyone. He educated the group on all aspects of Spanish culture, life and the additional guides brought in were superb also. We all appreciated the extra goodies he brought for tastings, and his recommendations on where to eat to taste the best food items he was so proud of. There were people who were on their first tour and one who was on her 17th tour. It was great!

I loved it. I went with my grandma and my sister. We were the youngest in the group but it didn't matter we still had fun and I enjoyed talking to everyone. As a single traveler, I sometimes go into a trip with a bit of apprehension, not knowing anything about the group. I am pleased to say that on the RS Best of Spain tour that I recently went on, everyone, without exception, was wonderful and a lot of fun. The group was small, only 15, which I was told, was unusual, but great for us. The sites we visited, from Roman ruins and aqueducts, art galleries, Churches, Cathedrals and Basilicas to bull rings and olive groves, were a daily history lesson

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Most folks would say their "wow" moment was the Sacrada Familia, and I wouldn't disagree, however, that was just one. A few others would be: the Royal Palace in Madrid, Segovia's Roman aqueducts, Toledo's Cathedral (the magnum opus of the Gothic style), the windmills outside the town of Consuegra, Capilla Real (Isabel & Ferdinands tombs), meeting the matador, Rafael Tejada, at his Reserva Tauro, Cathedral of Sevilla (Columbus' tomb) and the Real Alcazar in Sevilla"

There were so many wonderful experiences on the Spain tour that were interesting, fun and educational. This is the perfect type of trip for someone like me, who is a widow. I love the history and the chance to explore ancient sites and medieval towns, but with the reassurance that there is someone there for me if I need help. The sense of comfort in the unknown is a testament to the Rick Steves way of traveling. I always felt safe, knew I had a nice place to stay, reliable transportation, but also the freedom to explore on my own, experience the local culture, and look forward to the next day.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were so many, it is hard to pick. The hacienda we had to ourselves outside of Ronda was so beautiful, but the hotel in Ronda on the gorge was great too. The dinner overlooking the Alhambra at night was delightful. The Royal Palace, which we had to ourselves on our tour was the most beautiful I have ever seen. The Alhambra, of course, is so special. It seemed every day we though we had experienced the highlight, and the next day there was yet another one."

Wonderful people in our tour group who were easy to travel with. I enjoyed each of the places we visited and appreciated the "on your own time" in each place to explore areas of interest. Favorite "WOW" moment

It was an awesome trip, each day was exceptional. I loved all the expected tourist sites like the Sagrada Familia and the Ahlhambra and the things one doesn't see on any other tour, like the visits to the family homes in Salinas, the olive producer, and the saffron merchant in La Mancha. Jorge always had new things to show us, and new things to taste. He was a wonderful guide and so conscientious about my friends, one vegetarian and one with sulfite allergies.

This is my second 'Best of..' tour. Frankly I'm amazed at the amount of history, culture, art and immersive experiences that you've been able to plan for these tours. Certainly countries like France and Spain have a lot to offer but Rick Steve's tours and their guides deserve credit as well. Our guide this time, Roman, was wonderful. We really felt the tour gave us an authentic "taste" of this fabulous country. We got urban and historical perspective as well as rural and family perspective of Spain ????. Amanda really insured we received optimal experiences and a warm fellowship among our group. The guides were excellent at all our locations. Our 10th Rick Steves tour, the 2nd to Spain (2005), this exceeded most of our expectations and was a considerable upgrade from our previous experience in this country. The walking tours, the sights selected, the hotels and the meals were all improved over the prior version. Major takeaways: Barcelona a definite hedge over Evola and Lisbon; limiting Segovia to a day trip was fine; and skipping the Valley of the Fallen and the Escorial were also good decisions. (Continued in blocks 15 and 16.)

Exceptional experience. Our guide, Amanda, did an awesome job in coordinating our 2 week trip through Spain; providing info on the local culture, politics, history, architecture, art, religion, etc. Amanda was more than fair in her room assignments & supported all health needs or informational requests from the group. Every one of our "special expert guides" knew their material and made various cities, cathedral, monuments, and the local history & current culture come alive. Food was awesome

I enjoyed the Spain tour. Although I would have liked having more time to spend in several of the cities, I felt like I received a good introduction to Spanish culture and history. I visited Spain in 1970, as a 20-year-old student, while Franco was still in power. I was too young to understand much of the history, but I knew I would come back some day. I'm sorry that it took 50 years to do that, but I was happy to see how vibrant and resilient the Spanish culture is. I thank Amanda for that.

"The Alhambra was my most emphatic "WOW" moment, as I expected it to be. I have wanted to visit it since my childhood, so it was a dream come true. Amanda is an excellent guide: she set a positive tone for the tour by inviting everyone to introduce themselves and express their personal goals for the ensuing tour. Then she endeavored to assist everyone in reaching their objectives. One of our tour members was suffering from prostate cancer and Amanda made a point of allowing everyone WC stops frequently at the beginning of every side tour. She was sensitive and compassionate. That is important to me.

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Barcelona (BCN) and out of Sevilla (SVQ) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Spain.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Spain guidebook.
