Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Sicily

We'll gather at our hotel in Palermo at 3 p.m. for a welcome meeting. Then we'll begin our Sicilian adventure by joining a contessa for a personal tour of her family's home, the Palazzo Federico. We'll end our evening getting to know one another at a "Welcome to Sicily" dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Palermo.

Day 2: Palermo and Monreale

We'll meet our local guide and take a walking tour of Palermo and its colorful, bustling Ballaró street market — all spiced with an evocative whiff of Africa. Then we'll greet our driver and hop aboard our coach bound for the hill-topping town of Monreale — renowned for its Arab-flavored cathedral that blends Byzantine, Arab, Jewish, Gothic, and Norman traditions, heritage, and art. We'll tour the cathedral's interior of glittering, golden mosaics as well as the story-telling columns of the cloister. After lunch, we'll return to Palermo, where you'll be free to explore more of this exciting, energetic city and discover a tucked-away trattoria for dinner on your own.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 1 hour. Sleep in Palermo.

Day 3: Ancient Segesta and Mountaintop Erice

This morning we'll head toward the island's western coast, stopping at the ancient Greek site of Segesta to meander through its magnificent Doric temple and hilltop theater. Then we'll continue to the enchanting medieval mountaintop town of Erice. Believed by Romans to be the home of Venus, Erice eventually evolved into a center for Christian convents and home to heavenly pastries (which we'll learn about and taste). This afternoon we'll enjoy a tasty lunch that includes the region's specialties — sun-dried tomatoes, Castelvetrano olives, and Marsala wine — before making our way to today's final destination: seaside Trapani, where we'll take an orientation walk and set you free for the evening.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Trapani.

Day 4: Salt Harvesting and Seaside Trapani

Today we'll drive down to the Trapani salt pans — a coastal wetland and nature reserve where sea salt has been harvested for nearly 3,000 years. We'll tour the Phoenician island of Mozia and learn about this bygone civilization. Then our guide will teach us the history and process of salt harvesting as we tour the area by boat. You'll be free to spend the rest of your day exploring the seaside town of Trapani. Find that perfect terrace, savor your favorite aperitivo, and watch the sun slowly dip into the sea.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Boat: 1 hour. Sleep in Trapani.

Day 5: Ancient Agrigento and Country Living

This morning we'll take a magical history tour through the ruins of Agrigento, one of the richest of the Greek colonies and a thriving democracy 2,500 years ago. We'll focus on Agrigento's Valley of the Temples — the largest, best-preserved collection of ancient Greek buildings outside of Greece itself — and tour its archeological museum. This afternoon we'll head to our tranquil countryside hotel. You'll have time to soak in the view before tonight's dinner together.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep near Agrigento.

Day 6: Roman Mosaics and Syracuse

Sicily was also colonized by the Romans, which we'll learn about at today's first destination, the Villa Romana del Casale. Here we'll spend much of our morning surrounded by the world's richest and most colorful collection of Roman mosaics — including the time-bending "bikini girls" mosaic. On the road again, we'll stop to visit a working farm and meet its owner, followed by a midday feast. Then it's on to Syracuse. This evening we'll take a walk through the city's historic old town on the island of Ortygia.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep on the island of Ortygia.

Day 7: Syracuse, Past and Present

This morning we'll learn more about Ortygia and take a closer look at this small fishing island. We'll explore the local market, stroll through centuries in the Cathedral of Syracuse, and marvel at the masterpiece of the Piazza del Duomo. This afternoon we'll enjoy a lively performance of Sicily's traditional puppet theater, where the language is no barrier to entertainment. Then the rest of the day is yours to wander through Syracuse's delightful jumble of Greek, Roman, medieval, and Baroque layers — or settle on a quiet park bench with a harbor view.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep on the island of Ortygia.

Day 8: Mount Etna, Wine, and Taormina

We'll begin our day with a short drive up the coast to Catania, where we'll take in breathtaking views of Mount Etna while learning more about the volcano with a spirited presentation by one of the University of Catania's volcanologists. Next, we'll visit a winery on the slopes of the mountain, where we'll enjoy a tour through the vineyards and taste some of Sicily's deservedly famous wine before heading to Taormina. After we check into our hotel, we'll take a neighborhood orientation walk. This evening, join in the local passeggiata to feel the pulse of Sicilian culture, then find the ideal people-watching spot to enjoy your gelato and dinner on your own.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Taormina.

Day 9: Seductive Taormina

This morning we'll tour Taormina's remarkably situated ancient Greek theater, which is still used today for open-air performances. This afternoon you're free to luxuriate in this cliffhanging, Old World resort town. Wander through its elegant gardens, posh cafés, and shops; ride a cable car down to the beach; or explore the nearby mountain top village of Castelmola. Any way you slice it, you'll have a ringside seat to savor il dolce far niente (the sweetness of doing nothing), Sicilian style. This evening we'll meet up for a Sicilian pizza dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Taormina.

Day 10: Colorful Catania

This morning we're off to Catania, nestled at the foot of Mount Etna, where we'll tour the Museum of the WWII 1943 Landings in Sicily (Museo dello Sbarco). We'll learn how nearly a year before D-Day, Allied troops found themselves fighting against — and at the same time liberating — their Italian adversaries. After a brief neighborhood orientation, you're free to wander through Catania's famous fish market, admire the Baroque architecture of the grand Piazza del Duomo, or enjoy people-watching in one of the city's many cafés. We'll gather together tonight to say arrivederci, share travel memories, enjoy the freshest Sicilian food, and toast to new friends. Salute!

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Catania.

Day 11: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Catania's airport by taxi or shuttle bus. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Grazie e ciao!

Overall, the tour was a good one. After my Rick Steve's Ireland trip, I had high expectation for this one. But due to a couple of poor hotel choices and guides, my enthusiasm for Rick Steve's tours has dampened.

"I've been to Sicily before and have previously been "wowed" by most of the island. So this trip the "wow" moment was realizing that meeting and getting to know the other tour members was a much of a highlight as seeing the sites."

This was an outstanding tour. The food was over-the-top delicious and the best part was our guide Alfredo. He is the best of the best! Even though we had 28 people on the tour, this tour seemed to adapt well to the little bit larger tour group size. The only place we had to walk through the town with our luggage was in Trapani so that was good. Alfredo brought Sicily to life for us.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Oh, so many to choose from. The very best moment was the visit to Maria Grammatico's bakery and the lunch provided there. The food was excellent. Learning how to bake "Nun's Boobies" was so fun and learning Maria's story was very touching. That was a wonderful experience. And then Taormina, what can we say, we all just wanted to stay more days in Taormina."

This was our first RS tour so we weren't sure what to expect. The guides were great, the tour was very well organized, and our fellow travelers were nice. We weren't expecting as much scheduled time or long bus rides. We're looking forward to trying one of the My Way trips instead.

One of the best vacations we've had. We learned so much from our guides and lecturers. Our main guide, Virginia, was very gracious and even gave us a bottle of wine for our anniversary. The tour was very well organized and ran on time; the perfect balance of seeing the culture, but then having someone interpret what we saw and experienced. By the way, Rick, we want to thank you for the perfect weather: sun and not a drop of rain. Rained before and after our trip so kudos to your weather guy.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We really enjoyed having our guide take us through Mozia. We learned a lot about the Phoenician civilization in ancient Sicily. Unfortunately, we did not write down the tour guide's name, but he was a wealth of knowledge. Honestly there were too many WOW moments to pick a favorite. The food at the wine tasting, as well as Giovanna's was amazing. The Byzantine mosaics in the Norman-Arab churches were stunning, and I loved (to my surprise) the puppet show."

Tour members on prior Rick Steves tours raved about Sicily so we went on the tour with high expectations. We were not disappointed! It was one beautiful old town after another, each one prettier than the last. The ancient ruins we saw were phenomenal, and we learned so much about Sicilian history and culture from David, tour guide extraordinaire. Oh, and the food and wine were excellent!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The cliffhanging small town of Taormina was all-encompassing! Views of Mount Etna, sheer cliffs dropping down to the oh-so-blue sea, an ancient Greek/Roman theater that is still in use today, quaint narrow alleyways, steep winding Medieval staircases, hilltop Castelmola high above the town and cannolis for breakfast. I had a very rich experience far exceeding my expectations. This tour had it all— a variety of stunning natural beauty, outstanding archaeological sites, interesting artisans, fabulous food, and, most of all, a superb guide and fun loving tour mates. Loved Sicily! Our tour manager, David, was THE BEST and local guides were uniformly good. Tour execution was perfect. The food was good, often excellent. The hotels were fine, nothing special, but some had lovely rooftop terraces. I would have liked some of the "free time" to fall in the morning instead of the late afternoons because there were very early starts every day. My favorite days on the tour were days 3, 6, 7, 8, and 9. I didn't care for day 4.

The tour covers a lot of territory and is definitely more packed than previous tours. The chance to see ancient ruins, try different foods, and see Mt Etna were wonderful. As always nice to meet others on the tour. I was surprised at how crowded many of the venues were and happiest when we were a bit more off the beaten path at the salt harvesting and Mozia, at Agrigento hotel with gardens, and at countryside places to eat especially the winery. The guide Donald was knowledgeable and helpful

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The drive up to Mt Etna with the road winding through ever changing vegetation and clouds coming in in and out was a wow. This Sicily trip was the fourth and last of several back-to-back tours I did, and the only Rick Steves one. It was by far the best! Every day I hear myself telling friends about my six weeks in Italy and Sicily, and I always come back to Sicily. Each time, I hear myself talking about how good our tour leader, Jamie, was. He was engaging, knowledgeable, full of surprises, and so capable of the cat-herding he had to do. He really made a huge difference in how much I enjoyed this eleven days.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Maybe Agrigento; maybe the ancient Greek theatre in Taormina; maybe the cooking demonstration by Roberto in Ortygia. Oh, wait - it may have been the visit to the abattoir-cum-kitchen of Maria Grammatico. Too many "wows" to single out just one."

The tour of Sicily was amazing from beginning to end. I had no idea the important role Sicily played in Greek and Roman history, and there was so much we saw and learned about that. While that was interesting, I enjoyed even more seeing the beauty of the country, the friendliness of the people, and the charm of their culture. My favorite parts of the tour were the more personal touches, such as having a tour of her home by a countess in Palermo, and enjoying a home cooked meal at a farmhouse.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were many but the ancient hillside town of Taormina was my favorite. Our hotel was amazing, with a rooftop deck looking out over the beautiful city. Walking through the town at night was magical, and I will never forget it."

Hotels exceeded expectations. Tour guide informative/educational, considerate, assertive when needed, and a true gentleman. Most of destinations well worth the stop or stay. I enjoy history and there was ample to absorb. Although all participants of our group blended well, I would have preferred a more diverse age range. All but two individuals were retirement age, my wife and I included. The visit of a “working farm” could have been omitted (my opinion may not be that of anyone else).

Everything was very well organized. The primary guide was wonderful--knowledgeable, patient, helpful. The individual guides for Palermo, Agrigento, Trapani salt excursion, etc. were also good. Our fellow travelers were interesting and pleasant companions. The sights we saw were diverse--a nice balance of historical sites, churches, city tours, and special touches such as the agriturismo, UNESCO baker, and winery visit. The group dinners/lunches were fun and tasty.

Lots of food, lots of wine, and lots of walking. Do not take this tour if you are not fir to tackle stairs and uneven pavement, otherwise, go for it! I had the misfortune of crashing my bike on a ride in Rome the day before, my tour manager was patient and helpful and found me a doctor on the tour for a recommended follow up check on my condition. All hotels were clean, some with amazing views!

Normally, I don't like to complete surveys. Too many people--medical professionals, teachers, even waiters--are reduced to consumer products, and our society transformed into a panopticon. But I'm willing to comment. Overall, although I'm not sure if I'm a "tour" person, I really enjoyed this tour. I saw more of Sicily than I ever would have had I been travelling just with my family. We saw so many different kinds of things, ate wonderful food, and experienced so much. It was memorable.

"There were so many "wow" moments that it's difficult to select just one. The view from the rampart wall in Trapani was fantastic as was seeing the church there with the scenes from the crucifixion. The views from various places in Taormina were also fantastic. I really liked Siracusa--its shops, its market, the waterfront. Erice was also great. But so were many of the other places we visited--the palazzo in Palermo, the Roman villa, the Greek temples near Agrigento. There were many "wows.""

We loved the variety, from the hustle and bustle of Palermo to the ancient ruins of Agrigento to the laid-back touristy Taormina. Jamie was a terrific guide, he respected us all as adults who had previous travel experience. Without exception all of the local guides were outstanding, providing us with their personal insights and knowledge—something we have come to expect on Rick Steve’s’ trips. We really came to realize that instead of all roads lead to Rome, all paths really do pass thru Sicily.

Alfio is amazing - he is the tour. The food and meals on this tour was even better than what we had on 2 previous RS tours (best of Italy, Greece). The tour was jam-packed - one day we had 5 different activities! Our fellow tourists were friendly and interesting - compliant with masking. There was much more to see in Sicily that I expected - amazing mozaics, beautiful cathedrals, ancient ruins, etc. We had unseasonably warm weather, which was rough on a few days. Loved the tour

The tour experience was colored by the unseasonable heat. Not the fault of the tour, and Alfio did what he could by standing us in the shade as much as possible. Leaving that aside, the tour delivered. I wanted to get a sense of Sicily, the history and architecture, and especially the food, and I was very satisfied.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"At our second group dinner, the restaurant had arranged the seating around several large tables. Except for two seats, which were at a small table apart from the others. My wife and I were at the end of the line, so that table was what was left. We took it, no complaints. But when Alfio saw the arrangement, some emphatic Italian ensued. The restaurant staff added a section to one of the large tables, making room for us. We had a good dinner and a pleasant conversation with our fellow travelers."

This was our 1st Rick Steves tour, and indeed our 1st tour group travel of any kind. "How can I pick just one 'wow' moment? The pastry class with Maria was truly special and unique. Monreale was even more beautiful than I imagined. The mosaics at Villa Romana del Casale were amazing. There was at least one 'wow' moment every day, and I don't know if I can pick a favorite! How is Sicily not everyone's top 'dream' destination?"

As my first big trip since 2019, I really appreciated the ease of doing a tour (not having to research and book all the individual hotels, deciding the route, etc.), the very high quality curation for the stops and activities, and the emphasis on health and safety. I felt so much better with masks required for the group and knowing that a negative test and proof of vaccination had to be shown.

This was my first RST but 2nd visit to Sicily. I expected a lot due to RST reputation and I was not disappointed! I believe the tour guide can make or break the trip and Alfio made this trip wonderful. The hotels were excellent, the included food was extremely plentiful and delicious, the local guides were so knowledgeable, the itinerary and free time was just right, and the group was interesting and fun (although a few may have not read how active it was). Loved the cookie making and winery.

"My first wow moment was the email informing us of a change to the tour guide. It was Alfio!! I hoped it would be him as I had heard him on Rick's podcasts. My personal wow moment was walking up to Sanctuary of Madonna della Rocca and then to Castelmola. I had done this 11 years ago and wanted to be able to do it again! I went back to Bar Turissi, climbing the 4 flights to the top; sat drinking an almond wine in a cool breeze, listening to the bell tower, Il Volo, and the off tune waiter."

The tour itself was great and informative. It had great pace and really showed the many faces of Sicily. Alfio was engaging, helpful, informative and showed great maturity when things got a bit tough. The tour was clouded by the virus which eventually hit over 2/3rd of all the group. Tour guides works hard to make everything happen as planned. After touring on the South of Italy where Covid protocols were strictly adhered to, the guides on this tour were much more casual about the Covid protocols. When on the bus they did not check that people were wearing their masks and wearing them correctly (not below the nose). As a result many people took 10-20 minutes before putting on their mask. Guides just sat down at the front of the bus and never looked back.

The gold mosaics of the duomo at Monreale were breathtaking, and even more impressive was that the Christian art was a Muslim creation. Agrigento, Mozia, the salt flats,Greek theater at Taormina, and Roman mosaics were all spectacular. And, last, but not least, was the food!"

Alfio our guide in Sicily did a great job. We were very pleased with the tour overall and would recommend this tour to anyone (this is our 4 th RS tour) The food was great at times too much , but oh so good, got to try new taste treats, even a spleen sandwich, not bad at all with cheese ! A little less time in Palemo as it is a big city . Would have loved more time in Erice even a day, very interesting, even a night . Loved Tacormina, what a great hotel !

Our tour guide was fabulous and kept us informed about everything we needed to know throughout the entire trip. Traveling with the incomparable Tomasso always provides an awesome adventure. We loved the special, unexpected experiences he made sure to share with us. Each stop had its unique character and we wouldn't have wanted to miss any of them. Previous participants had commented on how good the food was and we would agree. We did not find the pace too strenuous and ended the tour ready for more.

"This is always a hard question to answer; we never have just one. Seeing the temple at Segesta sitting on the hill, then sitting down to a delicious lunch in Erice was special. Seeing the artifacts at the museum in Agrigento and then walking through the Valley of the Temples with an engaging guide, seeing the mosaics at Villa Romana del Casale with very few others all brought history up close. Ortygia and Taormina vie for beauitul towns, but walking the crater at Mt. Etna was hard to beat."

Excellently organized. Rick Steves events were always on time and were ready for us. The bus was top notch, clean and comfortable. The menu of events were varied and well paced. Sicily has my heart. Stephanie and Nancy were such lovely tour guides: knowledgeable, kind, and helpful. Our group members gelled well during all the gelato tasting and vineyard visiting. Love seafood? You're in luck. Crave espresso? Covered. Thinking about cannoli? Try one every day. Want to see views of blue water, narrow, cobble-stoned streets, and a volcano's craters? You've got it. My senses were delighted by fig-trees, cheeses, and ancient ruins. I miss my guides and fellow travelers.

It was a nice tour, but was lacking in content. It seemed as if some days were just “a time filler”. It could easily have been done in less time. At the end of the tour I commented about how quickly it had gone by, yet as I looked back to the beginning is seemed so long ago. It then occurred to me that we had done and seen SO MUCH. The variety of sights and activities was fantastic! We participated in activities that I never could have imagined, certainly not if I had been traveling on my own. It was a great combination of city vs smaller towns vs rural; also, cultural and historical. And the food!!! Sicily is beautiful!! And fun!!!

Sicily is exciting and beautiful and I enjoyed the sites/activities and our tour guide. True to the description on your website, the tour is super active. I don't think everything we did added value, but it did add to the exhaustion factor some days. I think the schedule could benefit from an edit to allow people to catch their breath. Example: The salt facility after our visit to Mozi (sp?). I would have liked to go back to Trapani to wander around instead.

Thoroughly enjoyed my tour of Sicily! The pasta, fresh seafood, wine, ancient archeological sites, scenery, and people were wonderful! The people on the tour were bright, articulate, well-traveled and fun to be with. Alfio, our tour guide, was excellent. He shared his passion and knowledge of Sicily and made sure we had a marvelous time.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"One of my favorite "wow" moments was sitting in the "bomb shelter" in the Museum of the WWII 1943 Landings in Cantania and imaging what it was like to live through the war. Excellent and fascinating museum. I knew nothing of the 1943 Landings before. I love the history and many ancient sites throughout Sicily."

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There wasn't just one wow moment, there were lots. I really enjoyed all the specialty classes, making pizza, the winery, the bakery all of it!!!"

When To Go & Weather

Sicily's mild climate makes it a good place to visit nearly year-round. However, the months of March, April, May, June, and October are best for combining the convenience of peak season with smaller crowds and pleasant weather. September is the busiest. Visiting between November and February offers the benefit of missing out on the sweat, stress, and crowds of the tourist season, along with cool and crisp weather.

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements and transfers are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Palermo (PMO) and out of Catania (CTA) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or overnight stay. Note: Flights to and from Sicily often require at least one connection, and in some cases an additional night's stay in Europe.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Sicily guidebook.
