Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Sicily

We'll gather at our hotel in Palermo at 3 p.m. for a welcome meeting. Then we'll begin our Sicilian adventure together by joining a contessa for a personal tour of her family's home, the Palazzo Federico. We'll end our evening getting to know one another at a "Welcome to Sicily" dinner together. Sleep in Palermo (2 nights). No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 2: Palermo and Monreale

Let's meet our local guide and take a tour through Palermo's colorful and bustling Ballaró street market — all spiced with an evocative whiff of Africa. Then we'll greet our driver and hop aboard our coach bound for the hill-topping town of Monreale, renowned for its Arab-flavored cathedral, blending Byzantine, Arab, Jewish, Gothic, and Norman traditions, heritage, and art. We'll tour the cathedral's interior of glittering, golden mosaics as well as the story-telling columns of the cloister. After lunch, we'll return to Palermo, where you'll be free to explore more of this exciting, energetic city, and discover a tucked-away trattoria for dinner on your own. Bus: 1 hour. Walking: strenuous

Day 3: Ancient Segesta and Mountaintop Erice

This morning we'll head toward the island's western coast, stopping at the ancient Greek site of Segesta to meander through its magnificent Doric temple and hilltop theater. Then we'll continue to the enchanting medieval mountaintop town of Erice. Believed by Romans to be the home of Venus, Erice eventually evolved into a center for Christian convents and home to heavenly pastries (which we'll learn about and taste). This afternoon we'll enjoy a tasty lunch that includes the region's specialties: sun-dried tomatoes, Castelvetrano olives, and Marsala wine. We'll take an orientation walk before setting you free for the evening. Sleep in Trapani (2 nights). Bus: 3 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 4: Salt Harvesting and Seaside Trapani

Today we'll drive down to the Trapani "salt pans" — a coastal wetland and nature reserve where sea salt has been harvested for nearly 3,000 years. We'll tour the Phoenician island of Mozia and learn about this bygone civilization. Then our guide will teach us the history and process of salt harvesting as we tour the area by boat. You'll be free to spend the rest of your day exploring the seaside town of Trapani. Find that perfect terrace, savor your favorite aperitivo, and watch the sun slowly dip into the sea. Boat: 1 hour. Bus: 2 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 5: Ancient Agrigento and Country Living

This morning we'll take a magical history tour through the ruins of Agrigento, one of the richest of the Greek colonies and a thriving democracy 2,500 years ago. We'll focus on Agrigento's "Valley of the Temples" — the largest, best-preserved collection of ancient Greek buildings outside of Greece itself. This afternoon we'll head to our tranquil countryside hotel. You'll have time to soak in the view before tonight's dinner together. Sleep near Agrigento (1 night). Bus: 3 hours. Walking: strenuous.

Day 6: Roman Mosaics and Syracuse

The Romans also colonized Sicily, which we'll learn about at today's first destination, the Villa Romana del Casale. Here we'll spend much of our morning surrounded by the world's most rich and colorful collection of Roman mosaics — including the time-bending "bikini girls" mosaic, discovered less than 60 years ago. On the road again, we'll stop to visit a working farm and meet its owner, followed by a midday feast. Then it's on to Syracuse. This evening we'll take a walk through the city's historic old town on the island of Ortygia. Sleep in Ortygia (2 nights). Bus: 4 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 7: Syracuse, Past and Present

This morning we'll learn more about Ortygia and take a closer look at this small fishing island. We'll explore the local market, stroll through centuries in the Cathedral of Syracuse, and marvel at the masterpiece of the Piazza del Duomo. This afternoon we'll enjoy a lively performance of Sicily's traditional puppet theater, where the language is no barrier to entertainment. Then the rest of the day is yours to wander through Syracuse's delightful jumble of Greek, Roman, medieval, and Baroque layers — or settle on a quiet park bench with a harbor view. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 8: Mount Etna, Wine, and Taormina

We'll begin our day with a short drive up the coast to Catania, where we'll take in the breathtaking view of Mount Etna, while learning more about the volcano with a spirited presentation by one of the University of Catania's volcanologists. Next we'll visit a winery on the slopes of the mountain, where we'll enjoy a tour through the vineyards and taste some of Sicily's deservedly famous wine before heading to Taormina. After we check into our hotel, we'll take a neighborhood orientation walk. This evening, join in the local passeggiata to feel the pulse of Sicilian culture, then find the ideal people-watching spot to enjoy your gelato and dinner on your own. Sleep in Taormina (2 nights). Bus: 3 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 9: Seductive Taormina

This morning we'll tour Taormina's remarkably situated ancient Greek theater, which is still used today for open-air performances. This afternoon you are free to luxuriate in this cliff-hanging, Old World resort town. Wander through its elegant gardens, posh cafés, and shops, ride a cable car down to the beach, or explore the nearby mountain-top village of Castelmola. Any way you slice it, you'll have a ringside seat to savor il dolce far niente (the sweetness of doing nothing), Sicilian style. This evening we'll meet up for a Sicilian pizza dinner together. No bus. Walking: light to moderate (your choice).

Day 10: Colorful Catania

We're off to Catania, nestled at the foot of Mount Etna, where this morning we'll tour the Museum of the WWII 1943 Landings in Sicily (Museo dello Sbarco). We'll learn how, nearly a year before D-Day, Allied troops found themselves fighting against — and at the same time liberating — their Italian adversaries. After a brief neighborhood orientation, you are free to wander through Catania's famous fish market, admire the Baroque architecture of the grand Piazza del Duomo, or enjoy people-watching in one of the city's many cafés. We'll gather together tonight to say arrivederci, share travel memories, enjoy the freshest Sicilian food, and toast to new friends. Salute! Sleep in Catania. (1 night). Bus: 3 hours. Walking: light to moderate (your choice).

Day 11: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Catania's airport by taxi or shuttle bus. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Grazie e ciao!

This is an amazing tour which provides insight and education on a complex level. It takes a Rick Steves' tour to do it justice. An exceptional guide, tour department hours of planning, and great travelers in the group worked together to create a recipe of perfection.

"Arriving on Mt. Etna and getting to have a clear view of an eruption from our terrace that night was more than "wow"."

This was our first Rick Steves tour, and we couldn't have asked for a better introduction to the guided tour experience. Sicily is beautiful, and the weather was fantastic. Our tour guide, Stephanie, was knowledgeable, fun, forward thinking, and always prepared. The special tour guides were outstanding, and we learned so much during our travels. Our fellow travelers were the nicest people. Everyone got on so well, you would think we had known each other for years, not just days.

I enjoyed the tour, but did not feel particularly stimulated academically by the guides, except for Jackie A and the gentleman in Trapani. We had done some research prior to the trip. Jackie's educational works were available on line. She is a true asset.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My "WOW" moments were independent tours. My husband and I, & 2 others on the tour, returned to visit with the artisanal cheesemaker in Ortygia. He invited us to watch him make cheese at 5am, and shared enough cheese for the entire tour group. In Syracuse, we visited the second oldest known Jewish Mikveh. I recommend it to be included on the tour. The monastery in Catania was historically very interesting. Recommend it to be added to the tour."

High expectations tour after tour as a Rick Steves' traveler are always met. However, Sicily was not an easy tour to pull off. With so many changing variables when touring an active volcano, getting a peek through the vale of Venus, or being the last tour of the season, only an exceptional guide such as ours could conquer it. Definitely on the top of my list as a favorite out of 6 tours so far.

Our family (myself, husband and two adult daughters) had a wonderful time! The tour was well-designed to visit the best parts of Sicily in a most efficient way. Stephanie was a fantastic tour guide, so knowledgeable, kind, and helpful, and really made the trip special. Great hotels, meals, and a very congenial group!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"A "wow" day, rather than moment: walking through the hill town of Erice at the end of the day, after having seen the temple and theater ruins at Segesta, and having shared a most delicious Sicilian feast with the group on Thanksgiving Day, followed by a pastry demonstration at Maria Grammatico's --a perfect day."

The tour was well organized. The tour leader (Stephanie) and also local tour guides were great and knowledgeable. Most the food was great, preferred the picnic style food. Would have liked a little more free time and maybe 3 nights instead of 2 or 1 night at some hotels.

Sicily is incredibily diverse with a long and compelling history. The food is fabulous and the people are amazing. This generally well-designed trip does a great job of presenting many facets of Sicily and reveals that even more time could be enjoyably spent visiting other places we didn't have time to see. Virginia was a great guide and the other folks on the trip were a joy to be with.

This tour included an excessive amount of "free time" or "vacations from vacation" as you coin it. At noon of the very first full day, you are already "set free" in Palermo for the rest of the day and evening, all at your own cost. On the third full day, you are again on your own in Trapani where there is next to nothing to see. The free time continued on full days 6, 7, and 9 as well. Very little value to providing such excessive free time. I paid for a tour, not a "my way" tour.

The tour was very well organized. The main tour guide Virginia was outstanding. Can't say enough good things about her. The local tour guides were also excellent and helped us understand what we were seeing and its significance. We appreciate that the long bus trips including refreshment stops. We normally plan our trips on our own, but Sicily looked like and challenge and we are glad we chose Rick Steves. We saw sites and had experiences we never would have had on our own.

The tour guides were excellent plus Virginia had such a great personality-knowledgeable and was able to deal with a large group. Massimo (driver ) was the BEST! Had never really considered the ethnic blends and cultural diversity of Sicily. Jamie provided an excellent historical foundation of Sicily and how it relates to the rest of Italy and Mediterranean area. I'll be following up with additional reading. Totally enjoyed the ruins, the beautiful views, the markets, and the food! Oh, so much food! We lucked out with a fabulous group and perfect weather in November--sunny 60s! The Sicilians were terrific hosts! Had many memorable encounters!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Can't choose just one. Almost every day had a wow: scenery, the Mt etna winery meal, nearly getting blown off Mt Etna, the buffet where we made cookies, ruins at Agrigento, Taramino view from hike up to the church. Still haven't wrapped my mind around how they made those marionettes look far larger on stage. Meeting the locals--had so much fun with multiple vendors. Liked how their were very few tourists! But did enjoy our free time hike with a German couple."

Our first tour of any sort and it seemed to be most appropriate to choose Sicily because we would not have experienced the country as well on our own nor would we have been exposed to the variety of cultures and history of the country except through the guides. Because of this, we gained new insight into the historical significant of Sicily and its monuments. It was pretty relaxing even on the most "strenuous" days. It was amazing to visit places that people have lived for 3000 years or so.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were many, almost too many to choose one - from first night walking around Palermo, seeing the range of cultures in the architecture, to the Cathedrals in Palermo and Monreale, the temples, the "bikini girls" mosaic in the villa and many others. But the one that stands out for me is the next to last night in Taormina on the hotel terrace, with the moon almost full, looking out over the Mediterranean and the lights of town below, drinking wine with the group -and repeating to myself, wow!"

Loved our guide, Jamie. Was not impressed with Palermo, although I understand it is an important city. Parts of Palermo experience were outstanding, the tour with the Countessa, the farmers market, the mosiacs in the mixed heritage church, Monreale, and Zisa. Hotel selections were quite good.

Not having done my homework beforehand, I had no idea that the landscape in Sicily was so diverse. The island is exceptionally beautiful, and our experiences were as varied and enjoyable as the landscape. As always, the people on the tour, and our outstanding guide, Tommaso, truly made the trip spectacular!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I wasn't especially looking forward to the volcano presentation, as I assumed it would be pretty boring. Believe it or not, this turned out to be one of the (many) things I most enjoyed! I also thoroughly enjoyed the winery tour and meal, and our yummy experience with the cookie lady."

This was a wonderful tour with an excellent and very experienced local tour guide, Tommaso. The other guides we met were also extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about their areas of expertise. I feel I learned a great deal about Sicily and its people. We enjoyed great, authentic food everywhere we went and the locations of the accommodations were terrific. Sicily has an amazing history and beautiful geography including Mt. Etna - it's a place not to be missed.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I speak some Italian and I found the best part of my tour experience to be speaking with the Sicilians I met. They were helpful, warm and friendly (after a minute or two breaking the ice) and were willing to take the time to talk to me about cultural elements that were not part of their jobs - such as the scopa game they were playing, family dynamics, etc. (In other places I have been, the "locals' revert to English almost immediately.) I feel I learned a lot about Sicilian culture."

Loved this joyful tour. There was so much to see and experience in Sicily that our 11 days sped by. Our guide Tommaso's knowledge about and love for the island helped us appreciate it, too. Our Best of Sicily in 11 days exceeded all of our expectations. My husband and I have been traveling independently over the past few years and were attracted to Rick Steve's because of the small group size. The entire tour was marvelous. We had a wonderful group of travelers from all over the U.S. who all had one thing in common in their love of travel. This tour never felt cookie-cutter. It showed that a lot of planning went into the details.

"Arriving in Palermo after dark, I was unprepared and delightfully stunned by the sunlit vista of the city from the hotel terrace at breakfast. That was only the first "wow" moment. This was our first RS tour. We loved it. The RS approach to travel obviously attracts more mature travelers and that makes for a very nice group of energetic and interesting people. Our guide was excellent -- very knowledgeable, professional, great sense of humor. We loved Sicily. What a special place. One couple on the tour was taking their 10th RS tour. That says a lot about the quality of the experiences you create.

"Not sure I have just one "wow" moment. It's obvious that you work hard to create experiences throughout the tour that are more in-depth and intimate than other tour companies. Sicily is fascinating and diverse. This tour truly allowed us to see and experience much of what the the island has to offer in a brief time. The tour was a balance of cities, countryside, ancient Greek and Phoenician sites, great Arab-Norman and Baroque architecture, great experiences, and (of course) great food. There was a good balance of group activities and free time to explore on our own. Our tour group was one of the most companionable Rick Steve tour groups that we have experiences.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Seeing the panoramic view of Palermo from the breakfast veranda of our hotel the first morning has to be one of the wow moments of the trip. However, so were the magnificent Arab-Norman cathedral in Montreale, our first view of the Greek temple at Sagesta, and the view of Mt.Etna from the hotel in Taormina. However, having our bus driver serenade us with the his chiaramedda (Sicilian bagpipes) at our lunch at Maria Gramatica's cooking school must also be mentioned."

Our tour of Sicily was a most memorable one. Our tour guide Alfio was extremely knowledgeable in the history and the culture of Sicily. When we thought our tour couldn't get any better, the next day it did. The food and wine were marvelous. Our tour group seemed to gel almost immediately. The beauty and art of Sicily will always be with us. We found Sicilians have great pride in their heritage and a genuine love for one another.

Our trip to Sicily certainly exceeded our expectations. We were pleasantly surprised that, although it was very late in the season, the weather was perfect and almost all the restaurants and other places we wanted to visit were open. We joined a lovely group of people and our exceptional guide, Alfio. The layers of civilization are in evidence in many of the tour sites which are such a contrast to our own country. The scenery was beautiful and the people so friendly and helpful.

"Our visit to the Valley of the Temples was one of the highlights. To stand below the pillars of the Concordia Temple was meaningful to my husband and myself as we both attended Concordia colleges in the USA many years ago. Our visit to the home of a Contessa in Palermo showed us a type of life that we could only imagine. She was a perfect hostess and made us feel welcome in her incredibly beautiful home. The surprise boat trip around Ortygia Island on a beautiful Fall day, was unforgettable."

We thouroughly loved every aspect of this outstanding tour of an exotic island with a rich, colorful history. Everyday was an exciting learning opportunity; well-paced with constant monitoring and adjustment by a phenomenal guide. Alfio is a magnificent representative of Sicily...and successfully imparted his love to us. I've already recommened this tour to friends and family. I'll continue to do so Wow!

"Such a tough decision, as every day brought dozens of "wows." But, for me the Cathedral of Syracuse was a singular "wow!" It's amalgamation of Greek, Byzantine, Roman, Norman and Catholic expressions in an ancient, lovely city. And, the expressions and vestiges...all in the same structure...are still in use today! Many of our sites including these societal combinations...so intriguing. Wow x 10!"

Wonderful tour. Not having a Rick Steves guidebook to study before and during the tour gave it a different flavor from previous tours (can't wait to read the book next year!). Without the book, it was more obvious how much the overall excellence of the experience was shaped by the world-class guide (Alfio) and good-natured tour-mates. Sicily is full of delights- the people, the food, the history, the stunning natural beauty. This tour brought these things to life in a heartfelt way. Loved it.

"There were so many moments of personal warmth shared by our Sicilian hosts- from the Contessa opening her home in Palermo, to our dinner host opening bottles of spumante with remarkable flair in Agrigento, our bus driver Guiseppe's special way with a roundabout, and the moving pageant performed by the family of puppeteers in Siracusa...My absolute favorite was our time spent with Maria in her pastry kitchen and dining hall. Inspiring, delicious, and unforgettable."

Sicily more than met my expectations for teaching me development of civilization in the region. It's unique past with all the empires was a big draw for me. Being an American in 2018, I was surprised by a seeming lack of any "we/they" mentality on the part of Sicilians. That was very refreshing. Or maybe as an outsider, I just wasn't aware of its presence. Taormina has absolutely ruined American pizza forever for me.

As our 5th RS trip, it was our least favorite. Certainly the rain didn't help. We signed up late so had late Oct/beg Nov. General impression of S. Italy is that the govt is not spending their money on the people. It's not as clean. Also, it seemed there was less to do in the free time we had - likely speaks to more economically depressed the region is. That said, I read its better than it's been in the past. Happy to have seen history and wouldn't need to go back - unlike other places.

Prior to the tour, Sicily was just mountains and mafia to me. Given it's geographic location I should have had a better understanding of it complex history. I took this tour to "complete" my Italy experience and it did not disappoint! I can see how Sicilians see themselves as different from Italians. Their history is amazing. From Mt. Etna to the ocean views around the island, our visit to Sicily was rich with varied experiences, vibrant flavors, and wonderful companions. I loved learning a bit of Italian, a bit of history, a bit of archaeology, a bit of volcanology--everything in the right proportions. The tape recording played on the bus about the Greeks attempt to conquer the Island was also good. Would like to hear even more history such the unification of Italy in the 1800's.

1. Alfio was an amazing guide! Knowledgeable and engaging. The tour's organization efficiently used our time. We usually travel on-our-own and this first tour experience exceeded our expectations. The experiences were culturally, historically and geographically diverse. Even with all our reading and research we would have never found some of the unique places and fun activities the tour provided. Even time on the bus was filled with interesting information and dialog.

"We had no idea how much we really didn't know about Sicily! We had researched and read but with Alfio's help in directing us through so many wonderful experiences and locations we were left awe-struck. Hiking up Mount Etna and seeing the ancient temples of Agrigento were certainly high lights. And making cookies with Maria was wonderful!"

First time with Rick Steves Tour or any tour. Have looked at all the big buses full of people and never wanted to give it a try. RS tours are just the right size to make the group into a fun dysfunctional family! Alfio was the greatest and so knowledgeable about the history of Sicily. Every day was a new adventure, or two, and required no planning or work on my part. We could just relax and enjoy! I would certainly recommend the RS Sicily Tour to any and every one.

We have visited Italy several times previously and always enjoyed the time spent there. But we never really thought much about, or knew much about Sicily. But having listened to various fellow tour members on other RS trips praising Sicily, we decided to read up and go. And we loved it. Similar in some ways, but different in others to mainland Italy. Bottom line for me - interesting and impressive visible history, great food and a great guide to put it all together. Thanks, Donald!

"Walking down the hill from the Greek theater in Sagesta watching the Greek Temple below getting closer and larger. And, of course, the Bikini Girls (don't tell my wife). Actually, all the mosaics at the Villa Romana del Casale. But the winning WOW was an early sunrise breakfast by the terrace window in Taormina overlooking a socked-in cloud-covered Mt. Etna, only to have it tantalizingly open up to sun-lit glorious splendor as we watched. Hollywood couldn't have done it better."

Excellent tour of Sicily, an island with many layers of history and the many and varied experiences during the tour made the journey fun and exciting. We saw beautiful churches and palaces, Greek temples and Roman villas; enjoyed several cooking classes, wine tasting, and a puppet show; and marveled at the sight of Mt. Etna while having breakfast.

The tour was wonderful - action packed, varied, and illuminating! Sicily was a fascinating place to explore, with so many cultural and historical layers to discover. There was a good balance of organized activities and free time, which I always appreciate. We had a great group of travelling companions - everyone seemed to get along! Our guide Donald was excellent - knowledgeable, friendly, helpful, and good-humoured. Alessandro was the most personable driver I've had on 7 RS tours.

"No single "wow" moment. The biggest wow goes to the island of Sicily itself - physically beautiful, historically fascinating, charmingly populated! Other wows included: Exploring Mt Etna with Boris the volcanologist; seeing Mount Etna from our hotel terrace in Taormina; the incredible mosaic floors of the Villa Romana del Casale; the Valley of the Temples. Wows outside of the tour: the stunning mosaic interior of the Palatine Chapel in Palermo & the golden Baroque hill town of Noto."

This was our first Rick Steves tour, and it couldn't have been a better experience. It included well-chosen sites and cities, comfortable and sometimes spectacular hotel settings, excellent tour guides, interesting food and culture experiences, not too much bus time, and nicely spaced free time for exploration. One thing that stood out was how the schedule always allowed us to arrive at a popular site before the crowds surged in. Having used and enjoyed Rick Steves travel books, audio tours,

October was a wonderful month to travel - it was like a little bit of summer since the Seattle area was much cooler. The group, guide, and bus driver were all wonderful. Learning about and seeing so many layers of history was fantastic from carthaginians to WWII. Surprises like the salt flats, the incredible views after zigzagging up to Taormina, mosaics in churches and at the Roman Villa, wonderful gelato, and fancy marzipan on view ready for giving for the Day of the Dead. All in all great!

We anticipated a good trip (our 2nd RS Tour) and were worried that the time in the Greek and Roman areas would be insufficient....any why include a WWII museum? Instead so much was packed into our tour that we came home more educated about not only ancient history but the many years in between, including the more recent 20th century history. With our very knowledgeable and fun guide Virginiawow we gained insightful knowledge on the history through present day Sicily. Being a history lover I relished every minute. Then there was the food and trying all the specialties of the different regions. I was also so pleased with the choice of hotels on this trip and the group you put together. We all meshed so well and all were at a similar activity level.

Nice tour sampler of Sicily. Our tour started in late September and some of the days the weather was hot. Recommend wearing layers, hat, sunscreen, walking shoes, and bring an umbrella and bug spray with bug bite cream. There are lots of picture opportunities. We were comfortable through out the tour being cared for by our tour guide Virginia. Her enthusiasm and up beat personality made our trip very enjoyable.

The Greek temple ruins, the sea salt farm, the town of Erica, the Agrigento archeological site. The list goes on. Another moment stands out. My wife's birthday fell on the last full day of the tour and so we spent it at the Benanti Winery and hiking Mount Aetna this made for a great B-day and brought much happiness."

Our tour of the beautiful island of Sicily was fantastic. We were impressed with the variety of experiences that were on the schedule. We learned so much about the culture, toured a variety of ancient sites, tasted the cuisine of Sicily, and were reminded of Sicily's fascinating and complicated history. As John Julius Norwich says in his book Sicily: An Island At The Crossroads of History, "This lovely island will always be an enigma." The tour solved some of the island's mystery.

I really enjoyed every aspect of this tour. What I like about Rick Steves tours is letting the organization's staff and our guide make all the arrangements and set the program so I can just enjoy the experience with my fellow travelers. Excellent tour overall. Very well organized. Visited tour sites were, for the most part, interesting and appropriate. Personally, the visit to the island of Mozia at Trapani was weakest site visited considering the unimpressive ruins and our boring guide. And we did not spend any time learning about the salt harvesting there. Palermo was a quite pleasant surprise, and much more safe than I had expected. Our safety was never an issue. The Tour was a wonderful and easy way to see Sicily.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Agrigento's Valley of the Temples ruins, although I thought there might be more ruins there to see. Also, the stay at Taormina and being able to see the top of Mt. Etna clearly in the morning with the issuance of its steaming 'smoke'. Least "wow" moment? Our visit to the home of the contessa in Palermo to witness her extreme wealth while living amidst such a poverty-stricken neighborhood from what I observed. Totally uninteresting and irrelevant to our exploration of Sicily."

We have traveled extensively in Europe on our own in the past. We have also taken Viking tours on the Rhine and Rhone. This is our first Rick Steve's tour but I suspect it will not be our last. From the first orientation to the final dinner, the quality of the tour director and local experts was outstanding. The choice of hotels was great putting us in the heart of the city combined with classic European hotel accommodations. The food was outstanding and the venues were expertly led.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Etna "up close and personal" was my most wow moment, but there were many times I was impressed by what Sicily had to offer. When we joined up with family in Carini (near Palermo) they said we had seen the best and that there was nothing they could add as locals to what we did."

This was our 7th Rick Steves tour. We appreciate having everything planned for us. The Sicily tour (as with all RS tours) takes you to places that we might never go to on our own. I loved that we experienced different and unique things in each city in Sicily. From the mosaics to the volcano and the pastries of Sicily to the ancient temples and theaters. It was busy but still gave us time to wander through the streets and shop or eat or relax.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The lunch and pastry class with Maria Grammatico was at the top of the WOW moments for me. It is an experience that few people will have and I loved each moment of the visit. The tour of Palazzo Conte Federico with the countess was great, the Museo del Sale and the tour of the island of Mozia was wonderful, as well as the pizza making demonstration. This tour has a lot of WOW moments."

The tour was terrific. Sicily was basically a mystery to me - I knew next to nothing about it except that everyone said it was "beautiful". So around every corner was a surprise. It was wonderful learning about Sicily's history about which I knew nothing.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It was definitely Taormina. I could not believe the views from that town of the area below and Mt. Etna in the background. Wow doesn't even describe it. Also, a close 2nd was the surprise gondola ride from Erice to Trapani. Scary, but fun. A close 3rd (sorry) was The Valley of the Temples. Oh - and I can't forget the Sicilian Puppet show! I was so disappointed that the group in Palermo was on tour when we were there and delighted that the one in Siracusa was on our tour!"

It was very good. We had a couple of "grumps" that sometimes became challenging because it, as you advertised, is a very active tour with many "strenuous" walking days. The food was great, great guide, but we could have used a little diversity in the menus at times. (See below).

This tour was a wonderful blend of history, culture, food, and great fellow-travelers. It was all enhanced by Alfio, who had so much historical knowledge and insights to share. We have been inspired by Rick Steves' TV show and traveled independently in Italy, Germany, and Austria using his guide books. We were hopeful that this tour would be to our liking- we've never taken a tour before. We can't think of one negative thing on this trip. We loved it!

A fast-paced tour with lots of diversity. You had your churches and your ruins, but they were nicely dispersed between so many other varied experiences. Not prepared for how humid it can be in Sicily this time of year. Mt. Etna was the only cool spot. Had three extra days in Palermo pre-tour and no extra days in Catania post tour - Perfect, as I thought Palermo was more interesting than Catania.

"The entire island of Sicily was my "wow." Sicily is a beautiful island. Surrounded by the blue waters of the Mediterranean, the panoramas of this island were postcard perfect. Went to Sicily to see the island where my grandparents lived before emigrating to the US in 1914. What I did not expect was the stark beauty and vast history of the entire region. Ed. from 1000 char: Never on tour before. Did prior language & reading prep. Realized needed guidance but didn't want to be in large herd or isolated in 5-star hotels. LOVED EVERY MINUTE. I generally do not take tours but travel on my own - this is only the 2nd tour I have every taken and the first one was with my daughter's high school choir trip to UK, and I went as a chaperone and knew everyone on the tour, so not sure that even counts. Anyway, I would do it all again - one of the best trips I have ever taken and both the country and guide were fantastic. Could not ask for a better experience.

WOW! I loved everyday, every tour, every hotel. I loved our tour guide David his knowledge of Italy his love for his country and food. Bonus! He was also a musician and would sing Italian songs to us! Savannah was so fun I felt like we were girlfriends when the trip started. She did an excellent job of picking the venders and hotels where we stayed. Stacy is a superb guide - so ebullient, creative, knowledgeable, and caring. The program was well thought out. The caveat is that there were too many people - 28, 29 including the guide. It seems to run counter to the Rick Steves' philosophy of small groups. This tour is really good and introduced me to the wonders of Sicily.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Not a WOW moment in terms of one place/location. But for me it was the "antiquity of it all". How in the world did folks 2500 years ago build those magnificent temples and arenas with the lack of technology of the time? These things took GENERATIONS to construct - how do you keep folks motivated to work on them (much less complete them) when there is no hope of ever seeing the fruits of their labor, whether they be Greeks, Romans, Muslims, Normans, Spanish - whatever. Too remarkable...."

"For me the visit to the Duomo of Monreale really impressed me. Monreale is located close to Palermo up the hill, and its cathedral is a fine example of Arab-Norman architecture. But it is the interior which blew my mind. Every square inch of it is covered with tiny mosaics! The wall panels tell the stories of the Bible for the congregation. We had been to Sicily two times previously, but had seen and experienced only a fraction of the things included in this tour. We chose it because it included everything we had always wanted to see from reading and seeing movies about Sicily. Segesta, Agrigento, Villa Romano,Monreale, Erice, had all been on our list of "must see" but we didn't want the hassle of driving in Sicily. The tour turned out to be a perfect way to see everything in 11 days without driving.

"Our favorite "wow" moment would have been the drive up to Taormina, Sicily. The views were fabulous! But there were so many more "wow" moments to count. We had an experience at a cooking school and the entire group made cookies with an Italian chef. We also had a pizza making demonstration. So much fun!"

Adam and I loved our tour. We especially enjoyed the variety of events planned for us, the hotels, the food, wine, our group and tour guide. We felt like we experienced Sicily. Tommaso loves Sicilly and passed that appreciation on to us.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We both enjoyed the Farmhouse stay near Agrigento. It was the perfect spot to enjoy as we traveled to Catania. Another highlight was the lunch and baking experience at LaPasticceria and the gondola ride down the mountain. Another highlight for Adam was the WWII Museum."

This was my first Rick Steves Tour and my first organized tour. It was absolutely amazing, I've never been to Sicily before and because of this tour I experienced a new culture and learned so much. I could never have organized a trip like this on my own. I've spoken to neighbours who have been to Sicily and I experienced so much more. I have spent the past few days chronicling Day 1 to Day 11 to savour every memory.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I think when I walked out on the terrace of Hotel Taormina and saw the view of the ocean I was awestruck. What a view! The mosaics were beautiful, the ancient temples are incredible."

I loved experiencing Sicily. My favorite were the cooking lessons. Tomaso was the best.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My wow moment was the winery with the lunch with the wine and food pairing. But it wasn't really that it was their art collection with an original Bierstadt."

Was a great time all-in-all and the guide Tomasso was fantastic. I loved it and the tour got better and better everywhere we went. I would skip Palermo or maybe just 1 night for arrival and spend more time in the nicer locations Syracuse, Taormina and or Erice with Maria and cooking class. Palermo and Catina are just too dirty and don't have enough "goodness" for tourists. Staying longer at the other places or go to new locations is best. Tomasso is grt!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Other than the food I enjoyed going to the small town locations and sitting in Syracuse square eating and people watching was great. Listening to Tomasso tell us about Sicily and The regions was very interesting and the food, sights were just spectacular!! The local knowledge he has of each area and the guidance he gave us can't be beat. Issue: not with Tom but RS - no shorts in certain places but when u get there most others had shorts and skirts on. I get it for Vatacin - others in shorts"

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Probably the hotel in Agrigento. After visiting the ruins earlier in the day and then staying at that hotel w/the beautiful gardens and to be able to look across and see where we had been earlier in the day. Everything about that day was just great. And it came at such a nice point in the tour. It was an awesome moment when the archaeologist picked up a piece of old pottery he saw on the ground as we walked up to the ruins and then put it in his pocket. Did he plant that there?"

My husband and I thoughrly enjoyed our time on the tour. We loved the fact that we were constantly being entertained and just had to show up for things without the hassle of organizing it ourselves.

"The wow moment for me was visiting the farm house out in the country, where the hostess graciously put on a wonderful reception for us. First serving appetizers outside in a most interesting rustic setting and then moving us inside to a retired barn for a most delicious authentic Sicilian banquet."

Just a great intro. into Sicily. The tour met our expectations and more. Each day brought a different experience, great food, excellent accommodation, and a classic rick Steves group of travelers, friendly and no complaining. Our guide ewas knowledgeable friendly and helpful. I would have liked more info. on politics, economy, etc. as we rolled along.

This tour gave me a very good understanding of Sicily. Virginia was an excellent tour host who kept us well informed as to daily activities. Our group got along very well and it was sad to say good-bye at the end of the tour. We now have a good group of new friends.

This was my first RS tour and I was solo. I don't know how RS Tours finds such wonderful people to take their tours. Our group was warm, friendly, fun, and loved to travel. Everyone takes the "no grumps" rule very seriously! On top of that, we had the best tour guide, Virginia. I've only been on one RS Tour but I know she has set the bar very high for my next tour. I had never been to Sicily and it was fascinating. The guides, excursions, and hotels were all first rate. Overall A+.

"I had several. Eating Maria Grammatico's almond cookies, the farmhouse picnic lunch, visiting the Countess, the winery visit with wine tasting and lunch, the pizza making (and eating!), and the gorgeous scenery. I came away with such extensive knowledge of Sicily, it was like taking a college course."

I thought it was a fantastic trip. It was well conceived with a nice mixture of ruins, delicious food, historic city sections, and down time. The places that we stayed were absolutely lovely, often with incredible views. I cannot recommend this trip highly enough.

"Well, in general, the food was a wow moment!! I think my favorite moment was when we drove out to an old villa(?) The appetizers were delightful......and then came this incredible lemon creme pasta. I have rarely eaten anything quite so good. Afterwards we sipped chilled Lemoncello. It was heaven, absolute heaven."

We did the Sicily in 11 days tour. Loved it. So much history, so much beauty, so much food! Alfio was our amazing guide. Local guides were all interesting, so knowledgeable and passionate. Didn't quite know what to expect on this tour but was pleasantly surprised and delighted. Rick Steve's does it right.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I was "wowed"over and over again at the layered diverse history of this country. To see ruins from 800 BC and earlier is just mind blowing. And to realize what this country has endured throughout centuries of conquer is incredible. I was wowed by the church in Erice -stunning. The city of Erice is gorgeous. Taormina was breathtaking. To be on the edge of a crater on Mt Etna is pretty wow too!"

The tour was our first with Rick Steeves and the best tour experience to date. We had such a wonderful time for three reasons. #1 was our tour guide Alfio. He has the perfect personality to take people along with him on a journey. He is knowledgeable, funny and enthusiastic about everything from The Carthaginian invasion to the proper way to eat spaghetti. 2nd, The tour is nice mix of walking, short boat rides, superb food and free time. 3rd, our group of 24 just hit it off.

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in your online customer account. About one month prior to the tour departure, in your customer account you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Palermo and out of Catania ("multicity" on flight-booking websites). Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or overnight stay. Note: Fights to and from Sicily often require at least one connection, and in some cases an additional night's stay in Europe.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Sicily guidebook.
