Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Sicily

We'll gather at our hotel in Palermo at 3 p.m. for a welcome meeting. Then we'll begin our Sicilian adventure together by joining a contessa for a personal tour of her family's home, the Palazzo Federico. We'll end our evening getting to know one another at a "Welcome to Sicily" dinner together. Sleep in Palermo (2 nights). No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 2: Palermo and Monreale

Let's meet our local guide and take a tour through Palermo's colorful and bustling Ballaró street market — all spiced with an evocative whiff of Africa. Then we'll greet our driver and hop aboard our coach bound for the hill-topping town of Monreale, renowned for its Arab-flavored cathedral, blending Byzantine, Arab, Jewish, Gothic, and Norman traditions, heritage, and art. We'll tour the cathedral's interior of glittering, golden mosaics as well as the story-telling columns of the cloister. After lunch, we'll return to Palermo, where you'll be free to explore more of this exciting, energetic city, and discover a tucked-away trattoria for dinner on your own. Bus: 1 hour. Walking: strenuous

Day 3: Ancient Segesta and Mountaintop Erice

This morning we'll head toward the island's western coast, stopping at the ancient Greek site of Segesta to meander through its magnificent Doric temple and hilltop theater. Then we'll continue to the enchanting medieval mountaintop town of Erice. Believed by Romans to be the home of Venus, Erice eventually evolved into a center for Christian convents and home to heavenly pastries (which we'll learn about and taste). This afternoon we'll enjoy a tasty lunch that includes the region's specialties: sun-dried tomatoes, Castelvetrano olives, and Marsala wine. We'll take an orientation walk before setting you free for the evening. Sleep in Trapani (2 nights). Bus: 3 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 4: Salt Harvesting and Seaside Trapani

Today we'll drive down to the Trapani "salt pans" — a coastal wetland and nature reserve where sea salt has been harvested for nearly 3,000 years. We'll tour the Phoenician island of Mozia and learn about this bygone civilization. Then our guide will teach us the history and process of salt harvesting as we tour the area by boat. You'll be free to spend the rest of your day exploring the seaside town of Trapani. Find that perfect terrace, savor your favorite aperitivo, and watch the sun slowly dip into the sea. Boat: 1 hour. Bus: 2 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 5: Ancient Agrigento and Country Living

This morning we'll take a magical history tour through the ruins of Agrigento, one of the richest of the Greek colonies and a thriving democracy 2,500 years ago. We'll focus on Agrigento's "Valley of the Temples" — the largest, best-preserved collection of ancient Greek buildings outside of Greece itself. This afternoon we'll head to our tranquil countryside hotel. You'll have time to soak in the view before tonight's dinner together. Sleep near Agrigento (1 night). Bus: 3 hours. Walking: strenuous.

Day 6: Roman Mosaics and Syracuse

The Romans also colonized Sicily, which we'll learn about at today's first destination, the Villa Romana del Casale. Here we'll spend much of our morning surrounded by the world's most rich and colorful collection of Roman mosaics — including the time-bending "bikini girls" mosaic, discovered less than 60 years ago. On the road again, we'll stop to visit a working farm and meet its owner, followed by a midday feast. Then it's on to Syracuse. This evening we'll take a walk through the city's historic old town on the island of Ortygia. Sleep in Ortygia (2 nights). Bus: 4 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 7: Syracuse, Past and Present

This morning we'll learn more about Ortygia and take a closer look at this small fishing island. We'll explore the local market, stroll through centuries in the Cathedral of Syracuse, and marvel at the masterpiece of the Piazza del Duomo. This afternoon we'll enjoy a lively performance of Sicily's traditional puppet theater, where the language is no barrier to entertainment. Then the rest of the day is yours to wander through Syracuse's delightful jumble of Greek, Roman, medieval, and Baroque layers — or settle on a quiet park bench with a harbor view. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 8: Mount Etna, Wine, and Taormina

We'll begin our day with a short drive up the coast to Catania, where we'll take in the breathtaking view of Mount Etna, while learning more about the volcano with a spirited presentation by one of the University of Catania's volcanologists. Next we'll visit a winery on the slopes of the mountain, where we'll enjoy a tour through the vineyards and taste some of Sicily's deservedly famous wine before heading to Taormina. After we check into our hotel, we'll take a neighborhood orientation walk. This evening, join in the local passeggiata to feel the pulse of Sicilian culture, then find the ideal people-watching spot to enjoy your gelato and dinner on your own. Sleep in Taormina (2 nights). Bus: 3 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 9: Seductive Taormina

This morning we'll tour Taormina's remarkably situated ancient Greek theater, which is still used today for open-air performances. This afternoon you are free to luxuriate in this cliff-hanging, Old World resort town. Wander through its elegant gardens, posh cafés, and shops, ride a cable car down to the beach, or explore the nearby mountain-top village of Castelmola. Any way you slice it, you'll have a ringside seat to savor il dolce far niente (the sweetness of doing nothing), Sicilian style. This evening we'll meet up for a Sicilian pizza dinner together. No bus. Walking: light to moderate (your choice).

Day 10: Colorful Catania

We're off to Catania, nestled at the foot of Mount Etna, where this morning we'll tour the Museum of the WWII 1943 Landings in Sicily (Museo dello Sbarco). We'll learn how, nearly a year before D-Day, Allied troops found themselves fighting against — and at the same time liberating — their Italian adversaries. After a brief neighborhood orientation, you are free to wander through Catania's famous fish market, admire the Baroque architecture of the grand Piazza del Duomo, or enjoy people-watching in one of the city's many cafés. We'll gather together tonight to say arrivederci, share travel memories, enjoy the freshest Sicilian food, and toast to new friends. Salute! Sleep in Catania. (1 night). Bus: 3 hours. Walking: light to moderate (your choice).

Day 11: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Catania's airport by taxi or shuttle bus. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Grazie e ciao!

LOVED EVERY MINUTE. I generally do not take tours but travel on my own - this is only the 2nd tour I have every taken and the first one was with my daughter's high school choir trip to UK, and I went as a chaperone and knew everyone on the tour, so not sure that even counts. Anyway, I would do it all again - one of the best trips I have ever taken and both the country and guide were fantastic. Could not ask for a better experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were quite a few on this trip - but I guess I would have to say the visit to the Cathedral in Monreale on our 2nd day. I have seen many churches throughout Italy (including the Vatican and Notre Dame) but this one was something so special. It literally took my breath away."

I stumbled across this tour when searching for a journey around Sicily that ticked all my boxes. As an Australian, I was wary about travelling with a bunch of Yanks but I needn't have been. This style of travel seems to attract free-thinking folk and we got along well. And the tour ticked more than all my boxes!

Every day was an adventure. Really enjoyed the mix of activities that we did throughout the tour. David was a great tour guide. I felt he took great pride in his roots and added a personal flavor to each and every day of the tour. I would highly recommend the tour to Sicily to my friends.

"I think there was more then one "wow" moment. I enjoyed the walk through the market and seeing all the beautiful fruits, olives, cheese and fish. The second was the great food we had which was very fresh and delicious. The local guides were great because they had enormous knowledge and added so much to our trip experience. We were traveling with a great group of people which made our adventure even more delightful.Learning how to prepare Sicilian pastry at Maria Grammatico's"

The Best of Sicily Tour was definitely outstanding. Everything was well thought out and very pleasing. Our tour guide was exceptional. The local guides were very good. The special events were amazing. The food and accommodations we all top rate. And our group which quickly became friends was wonderful. I can't imaging a better experience.

"It had to be the delightful lunch and pastry lesson with Maria Grammatico. It was such a rich experience. She was so entertaining and fun, and her staff was great too. And the food was the best of many wonderful meals we had on the tour. Second place was the tour by Countess Federico of her amazing home in Polermo. I loved her enthusiasm and the great story she had to tell."

Ed. from 1000 char: Never on tour before. Did prior language & reading prep. Realized needed guidance but didn't want to be in large herd or isolated in 5-star hotels. Highest hopes were realized; expectations far exceeded. David & Savannah were extraordinarily capable and stimulating in creating well balanced mix of structured and free time, humour, teaching and expert local guides. Food was marvellous, hotels great & we cannot overstate how pleased we were with the experience & the group.

I haven't been on a group tour before and have always enjoyed independent travel. The overall experience of the Sicily tour was so much better than if I had tried to travel independently. It was fun to make new friends, and engage with learning and enjoying instead of all the details of travel.

"Ortygia: It was raining so we started our walking tour in the "Chapel" of the hotel. I was expecting some pews and a statue of Mary but WOW! Walking around Mozia with an archeologist was another highlight for me. I wouldn't call it a WOW but I really appreciated the opportunity to talk with a local expert, when we saw the smiling mask in the museum on the island that bore an uncanny resemblance to our guide...OK ...that was a wow."

WOW! I loved everyday, every tour, every hotel. I loved our tour guide David his knowledge of Italy his love for his country and food. Bonus! He was also a musician and would sing Italian songs to us! Savannah was so fun I felt like we were girlfriends when the trip started. She did an excellent job of picking the venders and hotels where we stayed. So many days were filled with amazing adventures that the average person would not be able to see if it wasn't for the Rick Steve Connection. WOW!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My Favorite "WOW" moment was the night that our tour guide David came out to the patio area with his guitar to play Italian songs. To our surprise the bus driver Tony comes out with his saxophone and starts playing with David. Our whole tour group was there singing and dancing even other guests joined in. There was so much laughter it made us feel like we were in a big Italian family! You can't schedule this."

I was a little skeptical about taking a tour since I normally travel with one or two people at the most or by myself. But the Rick Steves Sicily tour highly exceeded my expectations! Our guide, David, was amazing! I've lived in northern Italy for the past year, but I felt like I still learned more about Italian culture from all of his "lectures"! We had so many awesome experiences that we wouldn't have had access to on our own. Our tour manager, Savannah, also joined us and was great!

We had a wonderful time touring the island of Sicily with our fellow travelers. The tour was well planned with many site visits and knowledgable local guides Our tour guide Stacy made sure we were aware of the next day's activities by posting a schedule in the hotel lobby each evening. Overall, there was a great mix of culture, history, and regional foods.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were too many "wow" moments to choose just one. We enjoyed making pastries with Maria Grammatico, lunch on a farm hosted by a Baronessa, wine tasting at the Benanti Family winery, the views from the Greek Theater in Taormina and visiting the WWII Museum."

Stacy is a superb guide - so ebullient, creative, knowledgeable, and caring. The program was well thought out. The caveat is that there were too many people - 28, 29 including the guide. It seems to run counter to the Rick Steves' philosophy of small groups. This tour is really good and introduced me to the wonders of Sicily.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Villa Romana Del Casale at Piazza Armerina. Looking at all the beautiful mosaic tiles still in pristine condition was transforming. Stacy was also so clever to have us go really early because we had the whole place to ourselves. Sheer genius on her part!"

We had a wonderful tour guide, Stacy, and a great group of fellow travelers who became like family over the course of the tour. This is our fourth Rick Steves tour and we found that the accommodations just keep getting better and better! The rooms were comfortable and conveniently located in the city centers. We ate the best of Sicilian cuisine for 11 days and it was awesome! We went home with a new understanding of Sicily's geography, complicated history and cultural mix.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"For me the visit to the Duomo of Monreale really impressed me. Monreale is located close to Palermo up the hill, and its cathedral is a fine example of Arab-Norman architecture. But it is the interior which blew my mind. Every square inch of it is covered with tiny mosaics! The wall panels tell the stories of the Bible for the congregation. The highlight is the "Christ Pantocrator", a colossal mosaic figure of Christ filling half of the dome over the altar. A magnificent UNESCO site!"

This was my second Rick Steves Tour of Sicily. I loved the first time I went about ten years ago so much I decided to invite by daughter along and do it again, as I wanted her to see it. This was my 6th RS tour and I don't plan on stopping.Having opportunities to participate is farm lunches, baking, cooking, wine tasting, and bonding with travel mates is what makes these tours so fun and engaging! Anyone can buy a ticket to a museum or ruin but having a personal guide or going to a hidden landmark is what makes these tours so impressive. We were busy learning and exploring and I thought the balance was just right for group time and personal exploration.

Will and I cannot begin to tell you how wonderful our guide, Stacy, was! She was THE best of the best! Will fell at the Valley of the Temples, and she was quick to take care of him/us! Her Italian speaking abilities helped us throughout our ordeal....She helped So much! From Dr to assess, to ER (she told Will to "ham it up" so he weakly walked holding onto her arm) where we got quick service! :D He got a catscan and 6 stitches above rt eye and 2 for lip. Forever thankful for Stacy!

This was our first time to Sicily and I must say that the experience was wonderful. It was a great mix of big city, historical ancient sites and wonderful ocean side villages. Loved the history, the culture, the food and loved the overall experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were many "wow" moments but the best is probably Taormina and the ancient Greek Theater. What a beautiful village perched atop the mountain with wonderful ocean vistas and views and an ancient Greek Theater to top it off. Others include the first time we saw the view of Palermo from the roof top restaurant at our first breakfast - WOW! and the valley of the temples! absolutely awesome! Ortygia, Trapani, Mt. Etna and the winery - it was all fantastic!"

What a great group of people! Created our own "happy hour" almost every evening which allowed us to get to know folks better. Stacy was the perfect guide/hostess; always approachable and organized. Hotels seemed to be mildly upgraded from our previous Rick tour. Sicily is an amazing place - highly recommend!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Not a WOW moment in terms of one place/location. But for me it was the "antiquity of it all". How in the world did folks 2500 years ago build those magnificent temples and arenas with the lack of technology of the time? These things took GENERATIONS to construct - how do you keep folks motivated to work on them (much less complete them) when there is no hope of ever seeing the fruits of their labor, whether they be Greeks, Romans, Muslims, Normans, Spanish - whatever. Too remarkable...."

Ancient ruins, cathedrals, cooking schools and pizza demonstrations kept us educated and entertained. Local guides and experts were always there to augment the tour experience with some surprises tossed in besides. The hotels and provided meals and snacks were fantastic!

This was a great experience. Alfio was a great guide and this tour is one where it helps to have a local handling the logistics and transportation. Our expectations were exceed, and I understand now why group members on previous Rick Steves tours recommended Sicily to us.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Contemplating the golden days of Sicily under Roger II at Monreale outside of Palermo, the view of the temples at Agrigento from the garden of our hotel after a day learning about the site, or Taormina, all of it. This was our first Rick Steves tour and it was a great experience for us. The size of the group was an important factor in our enjoyment of the tour. We were able to get acquainted with everyone in our group and it made for a comraderie that is unusual for a tour group. I have to mention our guide, Alfio. He was outstanding and gave us a wonderful learning experience of the culture and history of Sicily. Thanks so much for the great memories.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were many "WOW" moments during our tour but two were outstanding. This tour should be on everyone's travel bucket list! Sicily is such a unique place whose culture was influenced by very diverse groups. This well-organized tour truly brings out the best of Sicily. The wide variety of experiences offered made every day into a "wow" moment. There is something for everyone: hands-on food demonstrations, hiking through ancient ruins, awe-inspiring cathedrals full of artwork and intricate mosaics, sampling local wines and culinary specialties and so much more.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Having read Bitter Almonds, Maria Grammatico's inspiring life story, my "wow" moment was meeting her and participating in her cookie demonstration. The World War II Museum was another "wow" for me, as my uncle had been stationed in Sicily in 1943. Alfio's narration of the exhibits was outstanding. Finally, the drive up to majestic Mt. This was our first time on any organized tour lasting more than one day. The tour exceeded all our expectations. Our guide, Alfio, was amazing, telling us about the facts, history, and culture of Sicily, but also sharing insights and perspectives from a uniquely Sicilian view. He was warm and friendly as were the people of Sicily we encountered. We appreciated his sense of humor and also the efficiency with which he moved a group from place to place without feeling like we were being "herded".

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I can't decide; the meals were all special in there own way, the guides gave us wonderful and intimate tours of their areas of expertise, the churches were beautiful, the hotels were very comfortable...each day seemed more amazing than the last one. The World War II museum in Catania was thought provoking and reverent to the past and what the people of Sicily endured. The Greek temples were breathtaking and almost hard to imagine in that time long ago. The experiences meeting locals was special"

This tour was great. It was our fifth Rick Steves tour. On every previous tour, we were told by fellow travelers that we should take the RS Sicily tour. They were right. Sicily is a beautiful island with many quaint cities, a rich history, ancient sites, wonderful food and wine, and is an experience a lot different than that of mainland Italy. As is usual for a RS tour, we bonded well with our fellow travelers.

Alfio was the perfect tour guide for us. Full of facts, great sense of humor, kind to everyone. Hotels were good in general. Food was so much better than expected. (we had been seriously disappointed on our Turkey tour.) Each meal was quality and typical of the region. An effort was made to make each meal more than just another meal-- to make it a great experience. It was a very full schedule, but we always felt it was more than worth the effort!

This wa our first tour we have been on so we were hesitant to book it. We wanted to learn more about the history of Sicily so decided to try a RS tour. The size of the group was manageable, only 26. We had a wonderful group of travelers who worked well together. Alfio was an amazing guide, he was very passionate about his island, as well as knowledgeable. We had great meals provided, and normally when on our own recommendations were give on restaurants. Having free time each day was helpful.

Was a great time all-in-all and the guide Tomasso was fantastic. I loved it and the tour got better and better everywhere we went. I would skip Palermo or maybe just 1 night for arrival and spend more time in the nicer locations Syracuse, Taormina and or Erice with Maria and cooking class. Palermo and Catina are just too dirty and don't have enough "goodness" for tourists. Staying longer at the other places or go to new locations is best. Tomasso is grt!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Other than the food I enjoyed going to the small town locations and sitting in Syracuse square eating and people watching was great. Listening to Tomasso tell us about Sicily and The regions was very interesting and the food, sights were just spectacular!! The local knowledge he has of each area and the guidance he gave us can't be beat. Issue: not with Tom but RS - no shorts in certain places but when u get there most others had shorts and skirts on. I get it for Vatacin - others in shorts"

Being our first Rick Steve's tour, we were the "newbies" in the group. Many other travelers in our group had experienced numerous Rick Steve's tours and that told us we had made a good choice right from the start. Our guide was fantastic! The food was fantastic! The driver was fantastic! So each time we arrived in a new town, our guide gave us about an hour tour. This was so wonderful! He shared with us where the best restaurants & shopping were & where the pharmacy and ATM were located.

We have used a variety of tour companies to travel to different places, and found this to be one of the best, if not the best yet. It would have been nice to tour Palermo Cattedrale and climb the roof where the views were stupendous. This tour needs more visits to the coast. Maybe Selinunte instead of Segesta? Also, no one night stays and don't end the tour in Catania which was a let down after charming Taormina.

"Agrigento was awesome. I could go back there again! Taormina was charming and the Greek theater was fantastic. I can only imagine how wonderful a concert there must be! Another wow as walking around Mt. Etna and then the winery below. So much fun and a great experience."

Sarah Murdoch was a standout tour guide. Highly knowledgable, knew how to finesse the issues with diplomacy and and with her day guides delivered a good all round understanding of Sicilan cutlure and history. The mix of ancient and modern history realy gav e us a better insoght to this amazing part of Italy. We wre the only Aussies on the tour, and made friends very quickly with the rest of the group. They had a similar out look on life and travel as us. Due to the 'Rick Steve' travel style.

Sicily and this tour both exceeded expectations. The layers of history we saw were as if the past of the Mediterranean was all on display in one place. Everyone seems to have invaded Sicily and left their mark in architecture, art, the landscape, the people, and the food. The tour put all of this on show in the best possible way. The organisation was meticulous, the tour group members gelled brilliantly, and our tour leader par excellence, Karin, made it an unforgettable experience.

I felt that we had very little «  on your own » time. Most lunches and many dinners were arranged. It was a very «  groupie » tour. The food was great but far too many meals as a group. For me the "group" environment was stifling. We have done other tours . They were not so intense as this. I prefer to venture on my own when we get into town. I think we had five arranged dinners and about the same amount of lunches.

Sarah simply was magnificent in her command of every aspect of the tour and history of Sicily and Italy. At times I thought I should apply for graduate academic credits for a Masters in Western Civilization. Sicily was a wonderful surprise experience. We have traveled extensively in Italy but this was our first trip to Sicily. The history of Sicily is so long and filled with many invasions, colonizations, and occupations - no wonder it seems like "organized chaos"! The tour itinerary introduced us to memorable sights, sounds , food and wine. We loved meeting the Countess Federico and the Baroness, who graciously opened their homes to us and treated us as special visitors.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"So many that it is hard to choose only one - starting with being welcomed into the Countess Federico's home in Palermo where we were surprised with a welcome by Rick Steves. The beautiful mosaics of Monreale brought together the tapestry of influences from Byzantine, Arab, Jewish, Gothic and Norman traditions. They were magnificent! The visit to the WWII landings in Catania reminded me of the great sacrifices and role of Sicily in the endeavor to free Europe. The eruption of Mount Etna!"

After many RS tours, this one was one of the best - because of the setting (Sicily), the tour Guide (Nina), and the group (every member was fun. interesting, and engaged). The sights were enthralling and the group activities were fun and enlightening at the same time. We'd wake up every morning saying "this is a great trip" and go to bed every night thinking "what a great day". In short, 11 days of wow moments. If you like Italy (and it's my favorite) this is Italy times 2.

I was completely pleased, happy, satisfied, blown away, comfortable, exercised and fed with the overall tour experience. Besides having a lot of fun and laughter, eating wonderful food and drinking great wines, we learned so much history in every place that we visited...and it was especially great to know how much the Sicilians love and appreciate Americans. The personal touches of the tour were especially memorable, from Federico's Palazzo the first day to the bomb shelter on the last day.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There was a wow moment almost every day! I loved the tour of Conte Federico's Palazzo led by the entertaining Countess describing her amazing home and family and even where she finds a comfortable place to relax and read a book, and then her most enjoyable singing with a wonderful choir. Another wow was the "way underground" bomb shelter in Ortygia, under the Duomo Piazza, helping me realize and appreciate what these Sicilian people endured in WWII and rebuilt for us to enjoy."

Since we've been back people have asked us what our favorite thing was. I always have to ask, you mean from each day, because there were so many unique things to choose from. It would be easier to ask which temple was your favorite, or which cooking demonstration, because there was such a variety of things to see and do, it's impossible to choose. If all Rick Steves tours are this informative and fun we will definitely be doing more!

One overwhelming and the latter moving."

Incredibly educational and historically inspiring itinerary! I did not realize how much of a role Sicily played in the history of the ancient Mediterranean world. The tour itinerary was very well-balanced among historical, cultural, and "fun" venues/events. The culinary experiences were both an education and a "sinful" pleasure. After having true Sicilian pizza, there is no going back to Pizza Hut.

The Best of Sicily tour was fun for sure! From the bustling street markets to the Monreale cathedral and the tour of the Greek Doric Temple in Segesta and the Valley of the Temple it was an active tour filled with ancient history. Our tour guide Virginia Agostinelli was articulate, well educated and a strong leader. She shared the real story of life of Italians and the challenges the country faces in comparison to the US. She gave us some very strong advice, in Sicily, "it depend" so true!!!!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Hiking around ruins of Arigento's Valley of the Temples busting out with wildflowers all over the hillsides was magnificent. It was like being on top of the world and winding back the clock 2,500 years. Another favorite spot was the boat trip to the Phoenician island of Mozia, which concluded with a surprise private luncheon prepared for the group. We were hungry and the meal was a feast of authentic Sicilian foods too numerous to list. Yum!"

I was impressed by the organization of everything which allowed us to have every minute count. I loved getting my room number on the bus, grabbing my bag, then asking for the key and going straight to my room with my stuff with no waiting. So efficient. I loved the layout of the next day in the lobby such that we knew exactly what we were doing and could check if times were forgotten. We met fascinating people, ate wonderful food, saw interesting sites and relaxed because Massimo drove not us.

This first Rick Steves Tour exceeded all my expectations! The planned activities were varied and usually something wonderful that we probably would never have been able to put together if we had planned a trip totally on our own. The itinerary was impressive, especially since it seemed as if so many places complemented and even topped our earlier destinations. We had plenty of time built in for wandering and trying new places to eat solo or with new friends from our eclectic and fun group.

"Too many to really prioritize, but I must give our Super Hero Tour Guide Virginia and her Super Sidekick Alexis kudos for keeping all of those "WOW" moments coming at us without a hitch! I also found the Valley of the Temples particularly noteworthy because our experience there was enhanced by the ferocity of the Scirocco winds which pounded us with sands from the Sahara. It drove home how amazing it is that these temples have literally withstood "the sands of time" for centuries!"

Our experiences to the wonders of Sicily was beyond our expectations. The guides were top notch and the people that did the local tours did a superlative job also. The food, wine, hosts and accommodations were great. The bus driver got us to places that we did not think a bus could go. But best of all were the thoughtful preparations made to include all the sights, history, art, and peoples that make Sicily such a unique place. The people of Sicily have much to be proud of.

Fantastic experience! This was my first Rick Steves tour, and I'm now hooked forever. It was so well-organized and fun. I started each day asking myself if anything could possibly top what we had just done and seen and experienced, and amazingly something always did. It just got better and better! All locations were interesting but some stood out. If there was more time I would have spent one more day in Palermo, Ortegia, and Taormina. "How do you pick a "wow" moment when there were so many? But I guess the first was the visit to the Norman temple in Monreale, which was spectacular like the Palatine Chapel but on a much grander scale. The climb up to Erice and the lofty views there and around Mt. Etna and Taormina were unforgettable, of course. In spite of medical difficulties, every day was a "wow" day. I was"transported" by the Greek Antiquities. The guides were excellent though the quantity of museum material required them to go too fast. The churches and cathedrals were a revelation of beauty and cultural history. I felt the teeming intensity and complexity of ancient life across the span of history in a way books have not conveyed to me. Throughout, Virginia's excellent orienting comments connected the now and the then.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Valley of the Temples and its museum stand out. The guide was fully knowledgeable and presented information with an appropriate sense of historical drama. Beginning with the museum display of the giant temple figure gave a sense of the architects' dramatic vision and of a deeply alien culture and consciousness. The tour was marvellous! Sicily is fascinating, and our guide Nina was great in relating its complex history. The various destinations were very diverse, including ruins left by the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Norman, and Spanish rulers. We also learned much about Sicily's recent history: the Mafia and the brave Sicilians who opposed them, sometimes costing their lives. Geographically, we went from from seacoast to mountains (including Mt. Etna) and back to seacoast. Great hotels & food!

"Several of us walked to the top of Segesta. The view back down to the temple, plus the surrounding countryside was a 'Wow'! But that said, there were several other 'wows'. The view of Mt. Etna from our hotel breakfast room was one, the Valley of the Temples was another."

Sicily was a wonderful surprise! History, architecture, topography, cuisine, wine, people, orange groves and multi-cultural influences. Good variety of city, country, count's villa, Mt. Etna, salt flats, puppets, fish, meat and produce markets. Always enjoy exploring during free time. An example, when we stayed in Trapani we took a ferry to island of Favigana for lunch. 1

We were very happy with the overall tour experience. This was our second Rick Steves tour, so we knew the basic routine. We were blessed with an excellent tour guide and a wonderful group of fellow travelers. We knew going in that the tour would be heavy on historic sites and places, but were blown away by the condition of many of the temples and the Roman villa. The tour had the right mix of activities and free time, and we were able to explore some local areas to see the back door Sicily.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My "Wow" moment was visiting the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento. The museum tour with our guide was interesting and informative, but the walking tour of the temples was outstanding. The size and condition of the Temples of Hera and Concordia was beyond words, especially since they were built 2400 years ago and are still standing. Our guide was able to keep everyone's interest during the walk through the valley as he described the layout of the original city and some of it's history."

This was my first time to travel with a tour and I did enjoy it although group travel is really not my thing to be honest. Our leader Sarah was wonderful! All of the guides at different locations were interesting and well informed and Sarah gave us addition information about the culture, people etc. I'm sure we experienced things and locations that we would never have found traveling by ourselves with a tour book. I also think you get very good value for the price.

Sicily has not fully entered the age of mass tourism, and it was fun to know more Italian (perhaps 30 words) then retailers knew English in the rural areas. The landscape was stunning and the hybrid architecture (Greek, Arab, and Norman) was unique. A prime example of "waste not, want not". We saw a great deal in a short time and felt the trip was an excellent experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Roman villa with its extensive mosaics, numerous rooms, baths, columns, etc. illustrated that income inequality existed long before Versailles was built. I wondered, "wasn't a successful revolution overdue?" The mosaics in the Monreale cathredral (Eastern Orthodox) contrasted with the floats in Trapani (purely Roman Catholic) clearly exemplified the tolerance of Sicily, while Europe was embroiled in its religious wars. Fortunately, the heterogeneity of the population precludes tribalism."

I had no idea how much Sicily suited my interests until this tour! I loved the archaeological sites, and really enjoyed the vegetable focused cuisine. We were lucky enough to have really pleasant weather during our time in Sicily. As with my previous RS tours, traveling as a single person was completely comfortable--a great mix of people! Because of the expected uneven terrain at some sites, and my known klutziness, I brought along my trekking poles, and was happy I did.

This was a wonderfully enjoyable and educational tour in a country that I previously knew little about. I really appreciated the variety of sights and activities (e.g., archaeological digs, Roman temples, glittering and "recycled" cathedrals, wineries and wine tastings, pastry and pizza making, medieval villages, open-air food markets, salt flats, marionette shows, and more), and the emphasis on the history of the country. Sicily is truly a palimpsest of cultures.

I signed up for the tour because of the Greek ruins, but it turned out to be so much more. Sicily has many layers, and I believe we saw many of them. There was a good amount of free time and suggestions of things to do. Sicily more than met my expectations as did the tour.

Overall, the tour was interesting, well-organized, and moved at an appropriate pace throughout the varied locations. This was my 6th Rick Steves' tour over a ten year timeframe. I have used the Rick Steves travel books for years while stationed overseas with the Army and had always found them to be "spot on". Our fellow travelers were some of the nicest, most thoughtful and intelligent people I have ever had the honor of spending time with. Jamie was A+ and a walking encyclopedia of local history. The group energy was light and fun.

"There were too many wow moments, but my favorites were the puppet show, the war museum, and the cold, windy, rainy days we all weathered without complaint. Best of all: the beloved guide dog Nerice!"

Sicily is a wonderful place - the history, sites, food, and culture. The group was very compatible - no problem traveler and the guide kept everyone going at a good pace. His enthusiasm was contagious. It was interesting getting to know the others in the group - all very different with interesting experiences.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Erice (even though it was raining and really cold) was remarkable. The view of Etna from our hotel was terrific. I really enjoyed the "special activities" = the palace and tour led by the contessa in Palermo, the visit to the orange grove and the winery."

This tour exceeded my expectations. It was so inspiring to have walked/shared all the layers of history, and culture in Sicily. The sites chosen for the tour were outstanding! The weather was a challenge at times, but we all went on as cheerfully as possible. It made use appreciate the sunny days a bit more.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Seeing the ruins of history, many centuries in the past. Also, the level of tolerance practiced in this time was very revealing, and inspiring. I loved the church in Montrealle, and the temples in the Valley of the Temples."

The composition of the tour is what I was seeking. I went for the ruins and the food and that's what I received. We had a very easy going, fun and knowledgeable group. Everyone got along and looked out for one another. My husband traveled with his guide dog and everyone was very accepting and welcoming.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We had a perfect day at the Valley of the Temples. The local guide was very informative and we had plenty of time to explore the ruins."

Fantastic Tour of an island with a truly rich, diverse blend of history, cultures, cuisine, ancient/classical architecture, and beautiful geography/landscapes. Happy to take this tour in February: great discounted tour price, NO CROWDS, cool weather (some rain with it), lots of sales.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The pizza dinner was favorite wow. Also the beautiful landscape views that remind me of Tuscany, Ireland. That first bite into my Sicilian-made cannollo and Sicilian style pizza in Palermo, Mamma Mia!"

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in your online customer account. About one month prior to the tour departure, in your customer account you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Palermo and out of Catania ("multicity" on flight-booking websites). Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or overnight stay. Note: Fights to and from Sicily often require at least one connection, and in some cases an additional night's stay in Europe.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Sicily guidebook.
