Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Sicily

We'll gather at our hotel in Palermo at 3 p.m. for a welcome meeting. Then we'll begin our Sicilian adventure together by joining a contessa for a personal tour of her family's home, the Palazzo Federico. We'll end our evening getting to know one another at a "Welcome to Sicily" dinner together. Sleep in Palermo (2 nights). No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 2: Palermo and Monreale

Let's meet our local guide and take a tour through Palermo's colorful and bustling Ballaró street market — all spiced with an evocative whiff of Africa. Then we'll greet our driver and hop aboard our coach bound for the hill-topping town of Monreale, renowned for its Arab-flavored cathedral, blending Byzantine, Arab, Jewish, Gothic, and Norman traditions, heritage, and art. We'll tour the cathedral's interior of glittering, golden mosaics as well as the story-telling columns of the cloister. After lunch, we'll return to the city, where you'll be free to explore more of this exciting, energetic city, and discover a tucked-away trattoria for dinner on your own. Bus: 1 hour. Walking: strenuous

Day 3: Ancient Segesta and Mountaintop Erice

This morning we'll head toward the island's western coast, stopping at the ancient Greek site of Segesta to meander through its magnificent Doric temple and hilltop theater. Then we'll continue to the enchanting medieval mountaintop town of Erice. Believed by Romans to be the home of Venus, Erice eventually evolved into a center for Christian convents and home to heavenly pastries (which we'll learn about and taste). This afternoon we'll enjoy a tasty lunch that includes the region's specialties: sun-dried tomatoes, Castelvetrano olives, and Marsala wine. We'll take an orientation walk before setting you free for the evening. Sleep in Trapani (2 nights). Bus: 3 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 4: Salt Harvesting and Seaside Trapani

Today we'll drive down to the Trapani "salt pans" — a coastal wetland and nature reserve where sea salt has been harvested for nearly 3,000 years. We'll tour the Phoenician island of Mozia, and learn about this bygone civilization. Then our guide will teach us the history and process of salt harvesting as we tour the area by boat. You'll be free to spend the rest of your day exploring the seaside town of Trapani. Find that perfect terrace, savor your favorite aperitivo, and watch the sun slowly dip into the sea. Boat: 1 hour. Bus: 2 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 5: Ancient Agrigento and Country Living

This morning we'll take a magical history tour through the ruins of Agrigento, one of the richest of the Greek colonies and a thriving democracy 2,500 years ago. We'll focus on Agrigento's "Valley of the Temples" — the largest, best-preserved collection of ancient Greek buildings outside of Greece itself. This afternoon we'll head to our tranquil countryside hotel. You'll have time to soak in the view before tonight's dinner together. Sleep near Agrigento (1 night). Bus: 3 hours. Walking: strenuous.

Day 6: Roman Mosaics and Syracuse

The Romans also colonized Sicily, which we'll learn about at today's first destination, the Villa Romana del Casale. Here we'll spend much of our morning surrounded by the world's most rich and colorful collection of Roman mosaics — including the time-bending "bikini girls" mosaic, discovered less than 60 years ago. On the road again, we'll stop to visit a working farm and meet its owner, followed by a midday feast. Then it's on to Syracuse. This evening we'll take a walk through the city's historic old town on the island of Ortygia. Sleep in Ortygia (2 nights). Bus: 4 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 7: Syracuse, Past and Present

This morning we'll learn more about Ortygia and take a closer look at this small fishing island. We'll explore the local market, stroll through centuries in the Cathedral of Syracuse, and marvel at the masterpiece of the Piazza del Duomo. This afternoon we'll enjoy a lively performance of Sicily's traditional puppet theater, where the language is no barrier to entertainment. Then the rest of the day is yours to wander through Syracuse's delightful jumble of Greek, Roman, medieval, and Baroque layers — or settle on a quiet park bench with a harbor view. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 8: Mount Etna, Wine, and Taormina

We'll begin our day with a short drive up the coast to Catania, where we'll take in the breathtaking view of Mount Etna, while learning more about the volcano with a spirited presentation by one of the University of Catania's volcanologists. Next we'll visit a winery on the slopes of the mountain, where we'll enjoy a tour through the vineyards and taste some of Sicily's deservedly famous wine before heading to Taormina. After we check into our hotel, we'll take a neighborhood orientation walk. This evening, join in the local passeggiata to feel the pulse of Sicilian culture, then find the ideal people-watching spot to enjoy your gelato and dinner on your own. Sleep in Taormina (2 nights). Bus: 3 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 9: Seductive Taormina

This morning we'll tour Taormina's remarkably situated ancient Greek theater, which is still used today for open-air performances. This afternoon you are free to luxuriate in this cliff-hanging, Old World resort town. Wander through its elegant gardens, posh cafés, and shops, ride a cable car down to the beach, or explore the nearby mountain-top village of Castelmola. Any way you slice it, you'll have a ringside seat to savor il dolce far niente (the sweetness of doing nothing), Sicilian style. This evening we'll meet up for a Sicilian pizza-making demonstration followed by dinner together. No bus. Walking: light to moderate (your choice).

Day 10: Colorful Catania

We're off to Catania, nestled at the foot of Mount Etna, where this morning we'll tour the Museum of the WWII 1943 Landings in Sicily (Museo dello Sbarco). We'll learn how, nearly a year before D-Day, Allied troops found themselves fighting against — and at the same time liberating — their Italian adversaries. After a brief neighborhood orientation, you are free to wander through Catania's famous fish market, admire the Baroque architecture of the grand Piazza del Duomo, or enjoy people-watching in one of the city's many cafés. We'll gather together tonight to say arrivederci, share travel memories, enjoy the freshest Sicilian food, and toast to new friends. Salute! Sleep in Catania. (1 night). Bus: 3 hours. Walking: light to moderate (your choice).

Day 11: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Catania's airport by taxi or shuttle bus. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Grazie e ciao!

The tour was our first with Rick Steeves and the best tour experience to date. We had such a wonderful time for three reasons. #1 was our tour guide Alfio. He has the perfect personality to take people along with him on a journey. He is knowledgeable, funny and enthusiastic about everything from The Carthaginian invasion to the proper way to eat spaghetti. 2nd, The tour is nice mix of walking, short boat rides, superb food and free time. 3rd, our group of 24 just hit it off.

We have used a variety of tour companies to travel to different places, and found this to be one of the best, if not the best yet. It was well organized, we felt like we saw the most important parts, and tour details seemed to be carefully regarded. Hotels were comfortable (considering the tricky bathroom arrangements in Europe!), restaurants were all excellent, we had a large brand new bus, the pace was reasonable, and enough freedom was available for personal exploration.

"This is hard. There are many. I loved walking through the Valley of the Temples with the knowledgeable local guide who spoke perfect English, on a warm sunny day, seeing the beautiful buildings and feeling the atmosphere of the ancient Greek civilization. He helped us imagine how these amazing structures were built, who used them, and how they survived the centuries."

Alfio was a superb guide who was efficient, patient and had a fun sense of humor. The history of Sicily is extremely interesting and the food was superb. Our tour group was fun and welcoming. Its always an added bonus to meet fellow travelers from different parts of the U.S..

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I especially enjoyed the WW2 Museum in Catania. Our guide, Alfio, personally guided us through this superb museum. His knowledge of WW2 and its effects on Sicily/Italy were enthralling and amazing. He probably knew more about America's involvement in Sicily during the war than any of us."

My overall experience was outstanding. I enjoyed the cultural immersion into all activities. Sarah Murdoch's travel insights, background information, and general expertise were excellent. I enjoyed her ability to interact with every tour member (i.e. one individual was little different, no problem). Her friendliness was exceptional. Each tour stop was unique. There was a variety of activities. Down time came at appropriate sequencing.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were several "wow" moments for me. Erice with Maria Grammatico's cookie baking and meal were good and funny. People interacted with much hilarity. The boat tour around Ortega was pleasant and provided a scope of the island. Sarah got our whole group a reduced rate for boat. The Villa Romana del Casle was splendid. Agrigento's "Valley of the Temples" and museum tour was outstanding. Mount Etna venting when we were in Taormina was awesome. Catania's World War 2 was interesting."

We enjoyed Sicily a great deal. At the end we wished the tour had been 14 days rather than 11, with a day off somewhere in the middle. We could easily have done another day around Agrigento and in Syracuse or Catania. We didn't get to Ragusa or Cefalu.

Sicily tour was fantastic! Sarah was so knowledgeable; we learned past history of the country, some Sicilian words to use. When we met Contessa Alvina and her husband, a descendant of King Frederick, the stories we heard this first night kept an ongoing thread into many different places we visited throughout the tour. The group gelled very quickly and everyone was kind and visited with each other; Sarah set the tone for that with her friendliness and ready smile.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"So many to choose from! Eating breakfast on roof top restaurants, overlooking beautiful cities; Mt Etna putting off steam for us, the SEA! LOVED Maria Grammatico's baking class and the meal afterwards was DELICIOUS! Everyone in the group relaxed, had so much fun as we did on the way to Siracusa eating outdoors and then in the former stable. Seeing Taormina, Erice, Agrigento and staying IN Ortega was wonderful plus the boat ride we all went on! The pace of the tour was spot on."

The tour presented a nice mix of organized and free time. We definitely kept busy during both. The walking app on my phone registered over 75 miles during the tour. That was a good thing because I can't recall ever eating so much between multi-course meals and day time treats. So, the food was really good. It lived up to everything I had read to expect. I had no firm idea of the significance the island played in the development of commerce, art and culture in the world.

Nicely paced, well thought out tour. We're in the double digits of Rick Steves tours taken and this one checked all the boxes of the reasons we keep coming back. The tour Guide, Tomaso, was great. His knowledge base of the area, of the sites we visited and the people was great. You could tell that he takes a lot of pride in his profession and delivers very informative and interesting information. His ability to pull in other guides and people to enhance the historic, professional, cultural and every day living experience made the tour come alive. He was there at all times and was willing to answer any questions or help out in any way he could!

"The entire trip from beginning to end was a "WOW" moment. If I had to pick one area it would be Taormina. We already had all the historic background we needed and enjoyed the shopping, walking and the panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea. Seriously each stop of the tour had its "WOW" moments. The salt flats, Mt. Etna, wine tour, visiting historical churches it was all a great experience. And actually the people of the tour were fun and a joy to be around."

Our tour was wonderful and enriching. Tommaso is the best tour guide we have ever had over many years of traveling. His knowledge of the people and connections made the tour great. It is obvious that he has relationships with local people that he uses to enhance the people he is guiding. The local guides he used were excellent as well. They had obvious expertise and the ability to provide the right amount of detail for the group. The hotels were wonderful; centrally located and well run.

I felt that we had very little «  on your own » time. Most lunches and many dinners were arranged. It was a very «  groupie » tour. The food was great but far too many meals as a group. For me the "group" environment was stifling. We have done other tours . They were not so intense as this. I prefer to venture on my own when we get into town. I think we had five arranged dinners and about the same amount of lunches.

This was our first RS Tour and it was terrific! Our guide, Sarah Murdoch, was outstanding. She shared her passion for Sicily, her vast knowledge of its history and culture, organized amazing lunches and dinners, brought excellent guides to explain ruins, monuments and churches/temples, entertained us with cooking lessons, lectures, puppet show and maintained a sunny and positive attitude for the entire trip. The group of travelers was equally outstanding - smart, well-traveled, engaging.

Sarah simply was magnificent in her command of every aspect of the tour and history of Sicily and Italy. At times I thought I should apply for graduate academic credits for a Masters in Western Civilization. It was remarkable in every sense knowing that individually, we could never pull this off on our own in understanding how Sicily and Italy evolved and morphed into what it is today aside from its gastronomy and rich cultural.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Probably experiencing the harmonic resonance of the Segesta amphitheater and realizing that thee Greeks were the true source of our Western cultural heritage. It finally hit me that as Sarah summarized, the Greeks were truly the thinkers, while the Romans were the engineering doers."

"There were so many great moments....many planned and some that just happened. Think when we stopped for a bathroom break at a gas station and locals played the Star Spangled Banner it was very touching. The people of Sicily seemed very happy to have tourists in their country and I felt very safe all the time with the exception of the crazy market in Palermo. It was so narrow and crowded. Barely enough room to walk through the aisle between noisy vendors when a motorcycle or car came passed."

I have been to Europe many times on my own and with my wife, and did not think I would ever take a group tour. However, because it was Sicily and the trains are not extensive enough, we decided to try a tour. It was great! The overall tone of the tour was just right. The pacing was good. I was completely pleased, happy, satisfied, blown away, comfortable, exercised and fed with the overall tour experience. Besides having a lot of fun and laughter, eating wonderful food and drinking great wines, we learned so much history in every place that we visited...and it was especially great to know how much the Sicilians love and appreciate Americans. The personal touches of the tour were especially memorable, from Federico's Palazzo the first day to the bomb shelter on the last day.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There was a wow moment almost every day! I loved the tour of Conte Federico's Palazzo led by the entertaining Countess describing her amazing home and family and even where she finds a comfortable place to relax and read a book, and then her most enjoyable singing with a wonderful choir. Another wow was the "way underground" bomb shelter in Ortygia, under the Duomo Piazza, helping me realize and appreciate what these Sicilian people endured in WWII and rebuilt for us to enjoy."

This trip far exceeded my expectations. Nina was an informative, upbeat, fun and passionate guide. The tours, experiences, sights and scenery were beautiful. I learned so much about history, architecture, geography of not just Sicily but other parts of the Mediterranean too. He was a very safe, skillful driver.

After many RS tours, this one was one of the best - because of the setting (Sicily), the tour Guide (Nina), and the group (every member was fun. interesting, and engaged). The sights were enthralling and the group activities were fun and enlightening at the same time. We'd wake up every morning saying "this is a great trip" and go to bed every night thinking "what a great day". In short, 11 days of wow moments. If you like Italy (and it's my favorite) this is Italy times 2.

"Everything was a wow, but the most spectacular had to be the visit to the Contessa"s Palazzo Frederico in Palermo. We got a personal tour from the charming and funny Contessa including a wine and finger food reception, got to meet her family, got to hear a virtuoso performance from her choir, and last but not least, got to share the visit with Rick Steves himself. Sicily was a wonderful surprise experience. We have traveled extensively in Italy but this was our first trip to Sicily. The history of Sicily is so long and filled with many invasions, colonizations, and occupations - no wonder it seems like "organized chaos"! The tour itinerary introduced us to memorable sights, sounds , food and wine. We loved meeting the Countess Federico and the Baroness, who graciously opened their homes to us and treated us as special visitors.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"So many that it is hard to choose only one - starting with being welcomed into the Countess Federico's home in Palermo where we were surprised with a welcome by Rick Steves. The beautiful mosaics of Monreale brought together the tapestry of influences from Byzantine, Arab, Jewish, Gothic and Norman traditions. They were magnificent! The visit to the WWII landings in Catania reminded me of the great sacrifices and role of Sicily in the endeavor to free Europe. The eruption of Mount Etna!"

Since we've been back people have asked us what our favorite thing was. I always have to ask, you mean from each day, because there were so many unique things to choose from. It would be easier to ask which temple was your favorite, or which cooking demonstration, because there was such a variety of things to see and do, it's impossible to choose. If all Rick Steves tours are this informative and fun we will definitely be doing more!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The first night of our tour when Rick Steves himself answered the door at the the Palazzo Conte Frederica! The Best of Sicily tour was fun for sure! From the bustling street markets to the Monreale cathedral and the tour of the Greek Doric Temple in Segesta and the Valley of the Temple it was an active tour filled with ancient history. Our tour guide Virginia Agostinelli was articulate, well educated and a strong leader. She shared the real story of life of Italians and the challenges the country faces in comparison to the US. She gave us some very strong advice, in Sicily, "it depend" so true!!!!

This first Rick Steves Tour exceeded all my expectations! The planned activities were varied and usually something wonderful that we probably would never have been able to put together if we had planned a trip totally on our own. The itinerary was impressive, especially since it seemed as if so many places complemented and even topped our earlier destinations. We had plenty of time built in for wandering and trying new places to eat solo or with new friends from our eclectic and fun group.

Incredibly educational and historically inspiring itinerary! I did not realize how much of a role Sicily played in the history of the ancient Mediterranean world. The tour itinerary was very well-balanced among historical, cultural, and "fun" venues/events. The culinary experiences were both an education and a "sinful" pleasure. After having true Sicilian pizza, there is no going back to Pizza Hut.

This is only my second RS tour and so far, the best! David Tordi was excellent. The food was plentiful and mostly fantastic. We were active (which I love) and bus time was kept to a minimum. I loved the ruins and history. I especially enjoyed Trapani, Erice, Syracusa and Taormina. I would love to live in any of those places.

I knew my first Rick Steves tour experience would be memorable as the company stands heads and shoulders above other tour companies; however, my first tour proved to be deeply profound for me which has been been a Blessing in that it has laid a strong foundation for my next tour, the 21 day Best of Europe, which begins in a couple of weeks. I am over the moon with happiness to have had the opportunity to tour Sicily. Knowing RST's IS The Best, I will be booking more destinations. Aloha, :)

The Sicily tour was our 5th Rick Steves tour (so far). All the tours have been excellent! The Rick Steves "formula" works well for us. Sicily was no exception. We were very excited to learn that David would be our guide for the second time. He is an excellent historian and a fun guide. It was wonderful to learn of the complex history of Sicily and to visit places that have stood for more than 2500 years. From the visit with the Contessa to the tour of the WWII museum: Fantastico!!

This was our first group tour ever and we chose RS tour of Sicily. We wanted to travel conveniently without the hassle of figuring out transportation and lodging. And also we felt having an educated guide would enhance our knowledge of the areas culture and history. We usually travel independently using RS guidebooks. I started each day asking myself if anything could possibly top what we had just done and seen and experienced, and amazingly something always did. It just got better and better! All locations were interesting but some stood out. If there was more time I would have spent one more day in Palermo, Ortegia, and Taormina. All of the guides without exception were knowledgeable and enthusiastic about sharing that knowledge even if only with a bunch of "quivering amoeba" like us.

"How do you pick a "wow" moment when there were so many? But I guess the first was the visit to the Norman temple in Monreale, which was spectacular like the Palatine Chapel but on a much grander scale. The climb up to Erice and the lofty views there and around Mt. Etna and Taormina were unforgettable, of course. What a great trip. Loved the beauty and the history. Virginia was an excellent guide. She was fun and took really good care of all the issues that cropped up (And many did). Late March is in Sicily is a perfect time for viewing wild flowers. The rooms were for the most part excellent. The guides were informative and interesting. Our bus driver Giuseppe was friendly, helpful with the bags and a very comfortable driver, especially going around the curves at Erice.

The Valley of Temples was moving as were the mosaics in the Villa Roma del Casale. I loved walking around Erice. The WWII museum was interesting, but it will be better for non-Italians when there is more translation. Being at Mt. In spite of medical difficulties, every day was a "wow" day. I was"transported" by the Greek Antiquities. The guides were excellent though the quantity of museum material required them to go too fast. The churches and cathedrals were a revelation of beauty and cultural history. I felt the teeming intensity and complexity of ancient life across the span of history in a way books have not conveyed to me. Throughout, Virginia's excellent orienting comments connected the now and the then.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Valley of the Temples and its museum stand out. The guide was fully knowledgeable and presented information with an appropriate sense of historical drama. Beginning with the museum display of the giant temple figure gave a sense of the architects' dramatic vision and of a deeply alien culture and consciousness. Our own visit to the 5th century 16,000 seat Greek amphitheater where Aeschylus actually put on plays vies for favorite. All framed by beautiful vistas from beginning to end."

We were a family group of 8 within the tour. It worked really well to be together and to choose other things to do and people to be with. I didn't have a much background on Sicily and was really pleased to be able to get a better grip on the history and culture. We spent alot of time in BC, which makes sense. I was really pleased that we also got to the WWII museum, I could have stayed longer. Understanding the 1900s in Sicily is important for Americans to know, Mussolini & Mafia.

Really better than I expected - something new every day and I felt I got a great overview of Sicily. The group was fun and I did a lot of things with other people. The tour was marvellous! Sicily is fascinating, and our guide Nina was great in relating its complex history. The various destinations were very diverse, including ruins left by the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Norman, and Spanish rulers. We also learned much about Sicily's recent history: the Mafia and the brave Sicilians who opposed them, sometimes costing their lives. Geographically, we went from from seacoast to mountains (including Mt. Etna) and back to seacoast. Great hotels & food!

Sicily has not fully entered the age of mass tourism, and it was fun to know more Italian (perhaps 30 words) then retailers knew English in the rural areas. The landscape was stunning and the hybrid architecture (Greek, Arab, and Norman) was unique. A prime example of "waste not, want not". We saw a great deal in a short time and felt the trip was an excellent experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Roman villa with its extensive mosaics, numerous rooms, baths, columns, etc. illustrated that income inequality existed long before Versailles was built. I wondered, "wasn't a successful revolution overdue?" The mosaics in the Monreale cathredral (Eastern Orthodox) contrasted with the floats in Trapani (purely Roman Catholic) clearly exemplified the tolerance of Sicily, while Europe was embroiled in its religious wars. Fortunately, the heterogeneity of the population precludes tribalism."

Not only did I have the BEST tour guide, Alfio, but I had a congenial group of instant new friends to travel and share with. I was also surprised by the wonderful and comfortable hotels where we stayed and the quality of the meals, and the exceptional local guides who met us along the way. Adrian at the island of Mozia is a prime example.

This was a wonderfully enjoyable and educational tour in a country that I previously knew little about. I really appreciated the variety of sights and activities (e.g., archaeological digs, Roman temples, glittering and "recycled" cathedrals, wineries and wine tastings, pastry and pizza making, medieval villages, open-air food markets, salt flats, marionette shows, and more), and the emphasis on the history of the country. Sicily is truly a palimpsest of cultures.

This tour far exceeded my expectations, largely due to our wonderful guide Alfio. It was fun, beautiful, adventurous, delicious, educational, and exhausting! The pace is go go go but I learned so much from Alfio as well as our local guides about Sicilian history from ancient times through WWII. Great value, a lot of bang for the buck! So much was included. Wish it was a few days longer.

Our guide Tomasso was quite unbel ievable, with his knowledge of everything Sicilian, his contacts everywhere (counts & contessas in his back pocket it seemed), extra lunches to die for, & an overall professional, friendly way about him that really made the trip special. Great guide and group to experience a great region of Italy. We enjoyed Sicily's wonderful scenery, history, architecture, cuisine and people. Shared it all the great group of RS travelers and a guide full of experience, information and enthusiasm. Organized time, meals and tours were all worthwhile. Plenty of free time to enjoy special interests, quiet meals and new friends. A good blend of cities, countrysides, historic sites – from seaside ports to the snowy slopes of Mt Etna.

Sicily is beautiful and full of interesting history. Our tour guide, Tommaso, was simply wonderful. His love for Sicily and the joy he gets from sharing it with others made the tour that much more special. The tour hotels were lovely and comfortable and the food was beyond words. Of our 9/28 years in the military while in Germany we used Rick's travel books which were GREAT! I didn't want a tour but I caved to my husband. WOW what an experience!! Make me a believer. Overall, the tour was interesting, well-organized, and moved at an appropriate pace throughout the varied locations. This was my 6th Rick Steves' tour over a ten year timeframe. I do wish the current tours would have fewer tour members, as was the case in the earlier tours. In September, I will be on the Southern England tour, which will be the deciding factor for me in whether I take future Rick Steves tours, or switch to another tour company which offers smaller groups.

I have used the Rick Steves travel books for years while stationed overseas with the Army and had always found them to be "spot on". A Rick Steves Tour was on my bucket list and for my 72nd birthday, my wife booked the Sicily tour. The best tour ever, guide was outstanding, lectures by local guides were packed with history and pride in their city and culture. Accommodations were much better than I had expected and the food was over the top (Christina's pizza, Catania, the best in the world.)

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It's impossible to have a favorite "wow". As I try to think of just one it is shoved to second place by the next "wow". However, I did spend 11 days with 26 people that I had never met before and will say without reservation that would give anyone of them my house key if they were ever in Blacksburg and needed a place to stay. A group that was fully engaged in having a great time and loved to travel."

I signed up for the tour because of the Greek ruins, but it turned out to be so much more. Sicily has many layers, and I believe we saw many of them. There was a good amount of free time and suggestions of things to do. Sicily more than met my expectations as did the tour.

Sicily is fabulous!!! So much to see and learn. Our Guide, Alfio, was so informative, well-prepared & funny. His stories and insight into Sicilian life were eye opening. Somehow he always managed to have our group at a site first, so we weren't behind bus loads of other tourists trying to see the same sight. This was very helpful, and definitely made the experiences better. We were able to see things undisturbed and at a leisurely pace. Alfio is the best. We all loved him in the group

"Do I have to choose? The VIEWS for everywhere were stellar. For me, my WoW moment was a simple thing. My grandparents on my mother's side were both Sicilian. One day we had lunch at a farmhouse that was in the area near where my grandfather grew up. On the table of snacks was a Sicilian spinach pie my grandmother used to make, and it tasted exactly the same. WOW. I had been looking to make this but did not have a recipe. Alfio told me what it was called. I found a recipe! WOW"

The overall tour experience was much, much better than I anticipated. The food-the food!-was an important part of the experience, not something I expected. Getting to the venue, however, and finding accommodations previous to the beginning of the tour were difficult. Other tours I have taken offered these perks as an optional part of the tour and were very helpful. Some gewgaws I ordered as part of the $100 thing were incomplete, the travel clock; or didn't work, the compass thingy. Oops.

Our Sicilian tour was magical, just as I imagined it would be. We have traveled all over Italy and Sicily was as thrilling as the other locals. Loved meeting so many locals and visiting ancient civilizations. Most of our hotels were beautiful and locations convenient. Food was like no other i have had. Fish, pasta, and the best gelato in the middle of nowhere, like shave ice on Kauai. Romantic Mt Etna following us here and there.

"One cannot have just one WOW moment in Sicily. Moments were strung like a necklace from Palermo to Taormina. My first WOW was the golden mosaic Christ in the hilltop town of Monreale followed by our excellent bus driver Giuseppe driving us up a steep curving road to Erice . Maria G hosted my favorite lunch ever. Pottery and museum in Agrigento. Crunching in volcanic gravel near the top of Mt Etna. Drinking wine at Viagrande on the slope.Watching sunset on plaza in Taormina all WOW!"

From the first moment, Alfio made our sojourn in Sicily both delicious and delightful. Despite our travails in getting to Palermo, airline delays and cancellations, meeting our Rick Steve's gang made everything so much better. This was the perfect marriage of culture, culinary delight and comedy. Alfio combined local guides with local market excursions to give us a real feel for living in this colorful locale. Our Sicily trip was all we expected and more. Sicily provides a real cornucopia of pleasures for travelers: varied geography, amazing history, a fascinating mix of cultures and people, and top notch food. Virginia is incredible: as a guide and as a human being. All the best of this tour truly involved her identity as a European and a resident of Seattle w/ advanced education. Palermo and Monreale were alive with her knowledge of Roger II and William II and their liberal inclusive policies. The relationship between Erice and the salt flats and seaport of Trapani was made clear. In sum: the locales were well-chosen and enjoyable, but Virginia provided the context and meaning. She was delightful.

"I thoroughly enjoyed going "behind the scenes", or at least behind the privacy walls, in our visit to Palazzo Federico in Palermo. The Contessa's story is the stuff of romantic fiction; and her tour around the palazzo was filled with irony and history. Irony because the two of them must take in tourists to pay the bills, history because of the centuries-old title and the lands now lost. But the "wow" moments occurred the we met the Count in his"man cave" and we talked racing cars and engines."

Love, love, loved this tour! Sicily is a challenging place to visit[INVALID]kind of the Wild West of Italy. The history is complex, and the culture is unique. Our guide, Virginia, made it interesting and accessible. Her connections with real people who shared their stories with us, made it all come alive. Meeting these individuals was what really made this tour meaningful to me: the Count and Countess, Maria Grammatico, Salvino Benanti from the Benanti winery, and the couscous man in Trapani. Amazing!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The cathedral at Monreale was absolutely amazing. I have been in so many churches and cathedrals that they all start to look alike, but this one was truly unique. Virginia gave us a solid background in the history, and I had done some reading about it, but it knocked my socks off. It gave me a deep sense of the cultural mix that makes up the history of Sicily. It is a treasure. A close second would be the tour of the Benanti Winery on the slopes of Mt. Etna."

The tour was great! It had a good mix of tourist attractions and local culture. I knew it was an active tour but some of the days were too long and had a little too much walking for me. Karin did a great job. But, having been to Italy about 7 times before, the content of the tour didn't add very much for us. We were traveling with friends, so we had a good time nonetheless.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Two items stood out: baking cookies on the hill in Erice and lunch at the winery on the slopes of Mt Etna."

Having been independent travelers all our lives, we weren't sure what it would be like joining a tour group. While traveling with a group is an entirely different experience and I wouldn't want to compare it with independent travel, we were absolutely delighted with the experience. We loved the pace and the thoughtful efficiency of travel as well as some independent time, focus on the essence of Sicily, the comfort and location of accommodations, all of the guides, and FOOD! We'd do it again!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Truly, it was all WOW. I am known, only occasionally, to dissolve into tears at the most surprising things that touch me. In Sicily, it was walking into a very plain church facade to the most ornate baroque interior where you could feel the depth of history and passion of faith. In Sicily, it was also the fantastic meals and the care with which they are prepared and served: Who dissolves into tears over pizza? I did."

We had a wonderful time! Every place that we visited was spectacular. We enjoyed sharing our experiences with a friendly and interesting group of fellow travelers. The special events including the tour of the Palazzo Federico by the countessa with the special bonus of the concert, lunch with the Baroness at her farm, the lunch and cooking lesson with Maria and the Roman Villa of Casale show why Rick Steve's tours are the best.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were so many "wow" moments it is impossible to pick just one. Our favorites were the Roman Villa of Casale and the meeting and tour of the Palazzo Federico with the Contessa."

This tour was everything we expected and more. We took the Heart of Italy tour and this was even better. There was more fabulous food and the views were unbelievable. There were also more surprises like the oratorio in Palermo and the Church underground in Syracuse. Sicily is Italy, but not exactly so it is familiar but different. Virginia was a great tour guide. She learned everyone's personality very quickly and helped form bonds right away. An overall great experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The hidden Oratorio in Palermo and the beautiful mountaintop views."

I enjoyed being with a great group of fellow travelers, having a fantastic tour guide, and visiting one of the beautiful places in europe.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Segesta was like a dream. The setting for the temple was breathtaking. The roman mosaics in Villa Romana Casale were exciting to share with all of those who ever visited this ancient sight. The winery near Taormina was very interesting and the lunch there was the best."

I believe the tour exposed us to the major sites and cities of Sicily and while doing so it gave us a very good understanding of the significant history of the country. The tour was excellent, well thought out, and organized to make best use of the 11 days. I found the tour's use of "on your own" time to be just right. The tour guide (Virginia) was the best and the people in the tour group added to the enjoyment of the tour. I couldn't imagine a more enjoyable tour.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The entire tour was so enjoyable that it's not possible to identify a single "Wow" moment. There was a "wow" moment almost every day. My favorites included the Monreale Cathedral, the Phoenician island of Mozia, the Valley of the Temples, the Villa Romana del Casale, Mount Etna, and the Museum of the 1943 Landings."

Prior to going on the trip, I did not realize the wealth of Sicily's history. The many groups and cultures that left their mark were reflected in places that we visited, including the Greek ruins at Segesta and Agrigento, the Phoenician settlement at Mozia, and the beautiful mosaics in the Villa Romana del Casale. But it was not just a tour of historical sites. We truly enjoyed the beauty of the region, as well as the opportunity to see what life was like in both cities and hillside towns.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It would be hard to identify a single moment. Favorites included the Greek ruins at the Valley of the Temples and the spectacular mosaics in the Roman villa. Mt. Etna was amazing, as were the beautiful, sweeping views from Taormina. Also, our Sicilian pastry lesson with Maria Grammatico was unique and fun."

One of the reasons Rick Steves' tour deserves praise is that we never sat on the bus for more than 2 hours and it was usually less than an 1 ½ . The rides from city to city were always broken up with a stop at a historical site along the way or, if no sites were in route, a wonderful lunch break at a farm or vineyard was arranged. Bus rides were a time to learn about Sicily, go through photos, read, rest, or just gaze out the window. Time flowed from one enjoyable experience to the next.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Hum, favorite? The Oratorio in Palermo where Virginia related the story of the stolen Caravaggio; the bomb shelter and place for the Jewish bathing ritual under the Roman Catholic Church; the audaciously opulent church in Palermo which, until recently, was only used by 24 nun; and Virginia showing us the small symbol on the door of a local business and explaining its anti-mafia meaning, were all "wow" moments for me, but I don't think I have a favorite."

The tour was terrific! Virginia was an outstanding guide -so much fun to be around and so well organized. Fellow travelers were good fun too, group meals were wonderful, and every day was filled with great experiences. Highlights included the visit to the mikvah, the Villa Romana, the Valley of the Temples, swimming at Ortygia, the wonderful feast at the farmhouse, the Cathedral at Monreale, and so much more. Alisandro was a masterful driver and a lot of fun and the bus was so comfortable.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Villa Romana, the Valley of the Temples, swimming in the ocean at Ortygia, the Cathedral at Monreale, the heavenly lunch at the farm, the visit to Erice and the cooking lesson with the pastry chef, then eating her heavenly pastries, visiting the salt pans in Trapani (and learning about the Carthaginians), going up the side of Mt Etna. There were "wow" moments every day!!"

Pre-Tour Planning

We've put together some specific information on what you should know about this tour before you go. You'll also find more general information about "Getting Ready for Your Tour" on our Tour FAQ.

Trip Resources

Learn more about Italy: Check out a collection of Rick's TV shows, radio interviews, and articles, plus recommended books and movies.

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email. About one month prior to the tour departure, we'll email you directions on how to get from the airport to your first tour hotel, as well as the complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour.

Transportation

Many tour members arrive a day or two before the tour begins — and those who don't, wish they had. This allows you ample time to get over jet lag and make the most of the first few days of the tour.

There is more than one way to get to and from your tour. Most flights to Sicily require at least one connection, typically through Rome, Milan, London, Amsterdam, or Naples.

For information about flying within Europe, ask your travel agent or check Rick's list of European budget airlines.

For information about traveling by train, read Rick's train travel and rail pass tips and decide if your travel plans merit a rail pass.

If you have additional European travel or tour questions, contact the Tour Department at 425-608-4217 or email tour@ricksteves.com.

Sightseeing on Your Own

If you arrive in Sicily before your tour begins, use the Sicily guidebook to get oriented. Ride the public transportation, try out a few words of Italian, and get over your jet lag with lots of fresh air and exercise.

Here are suggestions for sightseeing in Palermo that we do not do as a group: Cappella Palatina, Teatro Massimo, Marionette Museum, Museo Archeologico Regionale A. Salinas, Palazzo Abatellis, Capuchin Crypt, Palazzo Mirto, Galleria D'Arte Moderna (GAM). You may also consider spending time in the seaside town of Cefalú, an easy 1-hour train ride from Palermo, or a 2-hour train ride from the airport.

Packing

This tour has several opportunities for swimming, so if you are traveling in the warmer months, you'll want to pack a swimsuit and a lightweight microfiber towel. If travelling in the cooler months, we advise that you bring a warm coat and you may also want to consider a hat, scarf, and gloves. Please check the weather forecast before your trip and plan accordingly so you are prepared for the varying weather.

For more advice on what (and what not!) to pack, see Rick's packing tips.

Special packing note: We use an audioguide system for many of our sightseeing and museum tours. If you wear a hearing aid, we strongly recommend bringing headphones that go over your ears to allow you to fully enjoy these tours.
