Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to Sicily
We'll gather at our hotel in Palermo at 3 p.m. for a welcome meeting. Then we'll begin our Sicilian adventure by joining a contessa for a personal tour of her family's home, the Palazzo Federico. We'll end our evening getting to know one another at a "Welcome to Sicily" dinner together.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Palermo.
Day 2: Palermo and Monreale
This morning we'll greet our driver and hop aboard our coach bound for the hill-topping town of Monreale — renowned for its Arab-flavored cathedral that blends Byzantine, Arab, Jewish, Gothic, and Norman traditions, heritage, and art. With our local guide we'll tour the cathedral's interior of glittering, golden mosaics as well as the story-telling columns of the cloister. After lunch, we'll return to Palermo, where you'll be free to explore more of this exciting, energetic city and discover a tucked-away trattoria for dinner on your own.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 1 hour. Sleep in Palermo.
Day 3: Ancient Segesta and Mountaintop Erice
This morning we'll head toward the island's western coast, stopping at the ancient Greek site of Segesta to meander through its magnificent Doric temple and hilltop theater. Then we'll continue to the enchanting medieval mountaintop town of Erice. Believed by Romans to be the home of Venus, Erice eventually evolved into a center for Christian convents and home to heavenly pastries (which we'll learn about and taste). This afternoon we'll enjoy a tasty lunch that includes the region's specialties — sun-dried tomatoes, Castelvetrano olives, and Marsala wine — before making our way to today's final destination: seaside Trapani, where we'll take an orientation walk and set you free for the evening.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Trapani.
Day 4: Salt Harvesting and Seaside Trapani
Today we'll drive down to the Trapani salt pans — a coastal wetland and nature reserve where sea salt has been harvested for nearly 3,000 years. We'll take a short ferry ride to the Phoenician island of Mozia and learn about this bygone civilization. Then our guide will teach us about the history and process of salt harvesting. You'll be free to spend the rest of your day exploring the seaside town of Trapani. Find that perfect terrace, savor your favorite aperitivo, and watch the sun slowly dip into the sea.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Boat: 20 minutes. Sleep in Trapani.
Day 5: Ancient Agrigento and Country Living
This morning we'll take a magical history tour through the ruins of Agrigento, one of the richest of the Greek colonies and a thriving democracy 2,500 years ago. We'll focus on Agrigento's Valley of the Temples — the largest, best-preserved collection of ancient Greek buildings outside of Greece itself — and tour its archeological museum. This afternoon we'll head to our tranquil countryside hotel. You'll have time to soak in the view before tonight's dinner together.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep near Agrigento.
Day 6: Roman Mosaics and Syracuse
Sicily was also colonized by the Romans, which we'll learn about at today's first destination, the Villa Romana del Casale. Here we'll spend much of our morning surrounded by the world's richest and most colorful collection of Roman mosaics — including the time-bending "bikini girls" mosaic. On the road again, we'll stop to visit a working farm and meet its owner, followed by a midday feast. Then it's on to Syracuse. This evening we'll take a walk through the city's historic old town on the island of Ortygia.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep on the island of Ortygia.
Day 7: Syracuse, Past and Present
This morning we'll learn more about Ortygia and take a closer look at this small fishing island. We'll explore the local market, stroll through centuries in the Cathedral of Syracuse, and marvel at the masterpiece of the Piazza del Duomo. This afternoon we'll enjoy a lively performance of Sicily's traditional puppet theater, where the language is no barrier to entertainment. Then the rest of the day is yours to wander through Syracuse's delightful jumble of Greek, Roman, medieval, and Baroque layers — or settle on a quiet park bench with a harbor view.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep on the island of Ortygia.
Day 8: Mount Etna, Wine, and Taormina
We'll begin our day with a short drive up the coast to Catania, where we'll take in breathtaking views of Mount Etna while learning more about the volcano with a spirited presentation by one of the University of Catania's volcanologists. Next, we'll visit a winery on the slopes of the mountain, where we'll enjoy a tour through the vineyards and taste some of Sicily's deservedly famous wine before heading to Taormina. After we check into our hotel, we'll take a neighborhood orientation walk. This evening, join in the local passeggiata to feel the pulse of Sicilian culture, then find the ideal people-watching spot to enjoy your gelato and dinner on your own.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Taormina.
Day 9: Seductive Taormina
This morning we'll tour Taormina's remarkably situated ancient Greek theater, which is still used today for open-air performances. This afternoon you're free to luxuriate in this Old World resort town. Wander through its elegant gardens, posh cafés, and shops; ride a cable car down to the beach; or explore the nearby mountaintop village of Castelmola. Any way you slice it, you'll have a ringside seat to savor il dolce far niente (the sweetness of doing nothing), Sicilian style. This evening we'll meet up for a Sicilian pizza dinner together.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Taormina.
Day 10: WWII and Catania
This morning we're off to Catania, nestled at the foot of Mount Etna, where we'll tour the Museum of the WWII 1943 Landings in Sicily (Museo dello Sbarco). We'll learn how nearly a year before D-Day, Allied troops found themselves fighting against — and at the same time liberating — their Italian adversaries. This afternoon we'll arrive in Catania, and after an orientation walk of our neighborhood, you'll have a free evening to enjoy this unique city juxtaposed by volcanic rock and Baroque facades.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Catania.
Day 11: Colorful Catania
We'll begin our day with a walking tour of Catania — stopping at the city's famous fish market to witness the energy between fish mongers and local merchants — and preview our final night's dinner! This afternoon, enjoy people-watching in one of the city's many cafés, or do some sightseeing at the Teatro Romano, or Palazzo Biscari. We'll gather together tonight to say arrivederci, share travel memories, enjoy the freshest Sicilian food, and toast to new friends. Salute!
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Catania.
Day 12: Tour Over After Breakfast
Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Catania's airport by taxi or shuttle bus. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Grazie e ciao!

The tour was perfectly planned by RickSteve. Everything from getting us into see the sights of the day early (so we had the remainder of the day to explore on our own) to the planned “freshen up” stops for restroom breaks. The orientation walks at each city were perfect as well as restaurant recommendations. The sights and information were plentiful. Our guide Brad was a fountain of information and answered questions as fast as you could ask them.

This trip was very active and full, but a wonderful chance to see a variety of culturral and historical sites all across Sicily. I really enjoyed the choice of activities, the amazing food opportunities that were included, and the knowledgeable guides. I also appreciated never worrying about what to do next, or how to get there. We knew we were in good hands and moving on toward another great adventure each day.

"Just being with local people and enjoying the food experiences (especially at the two cooking classes), and also the historical sites, especially the Greek temples in Agrigento, and the Roman ruins and mosaics. Walking out in the morning at our hotel in Palermo and seeing that view, with the church domes, and the mountains, was incredible."

Sicily was a fantastic tour experience due to 3 things: the rich history and variety of sites and towns around the island, the great group of fellow RSE travelers who shared a similar travel style and interest in experiencing a new culture, and Tommaso our fabulous guide who shared his island home with us and expertly managed all of the logistics for our group.

Not my favorite RS tour. Catania should only be one day. The hotel there was not good, lousy mattresses, and chairs that were artistic, but too low for us older folks to sit in. Note that savvy veteran travelers are likely to take this tour, rather than travel independently, as getting around by tour bus much more conducive than rental car. Our group dynamic was much different than the other 11 Rick Steves tours I've experienced. There was not much comradery, as many stayed to themselves, plus one big group of friends.
Favorite "WOW" moment
"In contrast to the other 11 Rick Steve's tours that I have taken, wherein there are typically 3-5 big wow moments, there really isn't any one on the Sicily Tour. There were many "little wow" moments, but none that knock your socks off. Not complaining, it's just a different type of tour."

Andrea was a wonderful tour guide providing great narrative and history for his hometown of Palermo and Sicily. We were pleased with the many spur of the moment surprises which added to our cultural experience. The spectacular scenery and weather didn’t hurt! This is our fourth tour with Rick Steves, and as in the past, there is a wide range of hotel types - some being average and others superior. The most fun is getting to know our travel mates and making new friends.

Besides all the interesting things listed in the trip itinerary that we saw and did, we really enjoyed all the "extras" that were not in the itinerary. Our tour guide, Andrea, was absolutely amazing. He made his job look so easy, and in doing so made the trip comfortable and interesting for all of us. His pride in being a native of Sicily encouraged those of us on the tour to appreciate Sicily as a special place.

"There were many but a few favorites included: first catching sight of Mt. Etna with snow on the top, the church at Erice that was ancient and unspectacular from the outside but beautiful on the inside, the beautiful mosaics in the cathedral at Monreale; and the procession to celebrate Saint Lucia that we stumbled upon our first night in Ortygia. My husband and I took this trip with our lifelong best friends. We picked Sicily because we wanted a something similar to Italy but maybe smaller scale and less touristy. It was our first Rick Steves trip and although I didn’t really have any expectations, the trip was better than I could have imagined. The weather was absolutely perfect for all the time spent outside. I did have some cities that I liked better than others but all together I think they were a great representation of Sicily.

"We had several wow moments because there was so much to see and do. Taormina probably generated the most wows because of the views. Couldn’t believe we were looking at Mt Etna out one direction and then the sea the other direction. Loved our drive from Mt Etna to there as well with the stop at the winery. Another favorite day was our bus trip up the very windy road to Erice. The views were amazing and our stop for lunch was incredible. Our guide was fantastic and played a role in our wows!"

This is our 5th RS tour. Overall, it's in the middle (others were Germany, Czechia, Austria; Best of Italy in 17; Ireland; Best of Adriatic. I think it stems from Sicily itself, as opposed to anything RS might have chosen or done ... it's a drier climate than I expected meaning less pretty landscape, and the cities are often run down and dirty. Our tour coordinator Brad was organized, knowledgeable and attentive. He kept us on schedule and laughing.

"The whole tour was basically an extended "wow" moment, but perhaps the biggest wow of them all was breaking through the cloud cover as we ascended the summit of Mount Etna. I've never experienced this combination of intense blue skies, a snow-covered mountain-scape, and billowing clouds, all without being able to see the earth below."

Sicily tour was exceptional due in large part to the expertise of our tour guide, Karin. Her thorough knowledge of the island, its history, language and customs and where to go was invaluable. She kept everyone completely informed of every aspect of our tour and was immediately attentive to any and all issues or problems that inevitably occurred during our trip - of which there were very few. Karin truly cares about ensuring the best possible experience for Rick Steve's customers.

"What struck me most was a question from a guide when I spoke with her of my father and his brothers all but one born in the US( but whose parents, my grandparents, came to the US in 1916 from Sicily) had all served during WWII for the US. She asked if any had been assigned to Italy or Sicily and I had to admit that I did not know. My father and 1 uncle did not, I know where they served, but the other 3 are no longer around to ask. I had not thought about their experience until that question."

Sicily tour is an “odessey” thru time from the Phoenician times, Greek, Roman, Islamic, post Roman ages, Spanish, and modern eras. From stone, to copper, bronze, iron. Civilizations, as the Iliad, separated by wars yet knit together as Greek buildings were repurposed. The countryside, formed by the collision of Africa and European tectonic plates merge the marine limestones and the Etna basalts like fire and ice. Breathtaking views from theatres and temples, seascapes, seafood, expresso, pizza.

"Segesta offers a panorama of “uplifted and rugged” countryside with a Doric temple (perfect, yet imperfect in its own way), theatre overlooking the sea, and ancient village (water system) that sustained communities in peace and war. When To Go & Weather
Sicily's mild climate makes it a good place to visit nearly year-round. However, the months of March, April, May, June, and October are best for combining the convenience of peak season with smaller crowds and pleasant weather. September is the busiest. Visiting between November and February offers the benefit of missing out on the sweat, stress, and crowds of the tourist season, along with cool and crisp weather.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Sicily guidebook.
