Imagine riding the escalator up from the Métro, turning the corner, and seeing the Eiffel Tower rocketing joyfully into the sky for the very first time. Imagine sharing that experience with your mother. I did that as a 14-year-old in 1969 and it's a memory I've treasured ever since. I did the same thing with my girlfriend last month — creating a bevy of rich memories.
One of my favorite things in life is sharing the cultural wonders of Europe with people seeing them for the first time. And to do it with someone special is the ultimate.
We strolled market streets in "village Paris," mastered the Métro, stood before art she'd always dreamed of seeing in person — the Venus de Milo, Winged Victory, Mona Lisa, and so many canvases by Monet, Degas, and Van Gogh. For our last evening we did the Parisian café ritual: grab a wicker chair facing the parade of people passing by, sip an Aperol spritz, and strike up a conversation with new French friends at the next table. Then we found just the right restaurant with a table by the window and enjoyed a carafe of wine and a family-style adventure through the menu…not missing the opportunity to drag a dozen snails out of their shells, piping-hot and tasty.
To cap things off, we hired an Uber driver to take us on a personalized, floodlit tour of the City of Light. Once he got the gist of our plan, we were into a giddy groove — drive to an iconic spot, get out for a selfie and a little happy dance, then head off for the next: Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Champs-Elysées, the Louvre Pyramid, Notre-Dame (still behind scaffolding), and Napoleon's Tomb, with its golden dome shining under the stars.
In this month's Tour News, we're sharing the magic of Paris. Tag along on a colorful slideshow of our week-long Paris tour, take a stroll down the market street of Rue Cler, meet Best of Paris tour guide Chris Coleman, and learn from tour members why our Paris tour is a top seller every year.
For anyone dreaming of a Rick Steves tour in 2022, I can promise you I'll be there in spirit — on your bus, at your table, savoring the art, and in your laughter…enjoying so many memories being made.
While we're not quite ready to take our bus tours through Europe yet, on last month's trip I tested the waters. The magic survives, the welcome is warm, and Europe is on a vaccination tear. The trajectory looks very good for 2022 and so are our tour sales. While we're nearly sold out, we still have a couple thousand seats left on 2022 tours…and that includes plenty of Paris. I hope you can join us!
