Rick Steves' Guide to Cuba [204 words]
In January 2016, Rick Steves took a detour off the beaten path... to Cuba. This "forbidden fruit" of the Caribbean is finally opening up to Americans, and travelers — anticipating an avalanche of change — are flocking there for one last look at the island before the end of the Castro era. In the one-hour special for public television, "Rick Steves' Guide to Cuba," Rick reports on the red tape, frustrations, and rewards that come with travel in the home of rhumba and rum, romance and revolution. In this spirited slideshow lecture, Rick recaps the highlights of his trip — delighting the live audience with memorable anecdotes, political insights, and practical travel tips. We'll go on a virtual tour of Havana (with its historic fort, colorful old cars, melting-sugar-cube architecture, and ramshackle barrios filled with Cubans who are eager to connect), as well as the well-preserved colonial town of Trinidad and the verdant national park at Viñales — with scenic horse rides and rustic tobacco farms. Rick also shares strategies on booking rooms, getting around, connecting with locals, and finding the best cigars. The pledge event includes two funding breaks: one midway through the 58-minute program, and a second, shorter break at the conclusion.
